…but this is big for pve

Please, elaborate how? There might be a very VERY tight niche for stack and dps meta? I can’t see how this can be traduced to “big for pve”; it still sucks compared to core warrior.

Berserker is an undeniable DPS gain over Arms in properly organized groups for Dungeons and Fractals of the Mists. Why exactly do you need someone to elaborate on how +damage% modifiers work? There isn’t even any algebra or above involved here.

Thanks, for a second I thought you meant something else than a closed group inside a dungeon all running meta like I state before. So nothing else than a % increased damage during some time. Great job on an elite spec. Totally worth waiting for an expansion for it.

Haha, why dropping warrior? try condi warrior, am currently using longbow/swordhorn build in pve.

Because if I wanted to be far from the battle burning things I would’ve rolled an elementalist.

Unfortunately, some of us are here for the fantasy as well, I like playing a warrior, who is strong, hits hard and endures battles.

Berseker is a weak version of that that only works for a few seconds and needs recharging. Rogues and Mages (generalizing classes) are better at enduring combats in melee than warriors, I don’t know how to think of this… I believe someone screwed up trying to be original.

No offense but all because you play alot of hours on a class does not make you a “master” there is a proverb about that somewhere but ways.

I fail to see a point here… or at least common sense in bringing this up. I never claimed to be one to begin with. Just implying the effort and dedication placed to my character

Zerker elite spec is fine yea its needs a lil buff here and there but for the most part its fine.

No it’s not. Please step away a little bit from your own belly and take a look at the forums; read the community. It’s not fine. It’s far from being fine. It has deep issues that will not be addressed anytime soon. It fills no purpose; and does absolutely nothing better or new that we couldn’t do before.

The main problem with warrior players ( most of them) is they thing raw damage greatsword/hammer is the only thing a warrior can do then whine when they get insta bursted down.

No it’s not. You are asuming too much and taking everyone out here complaining for granted. You think every one here is a moron who just knows how to smash one key and its not like that. You don’t even know how I build my char or my weapon of choices and aslo asume I’m trying to be a master of the class while you come here thinking you know the problem of the class? You are being hypocrite.

I play shoutbow warrior in pvp and there are many times I lasted way longer then a bunker guardian.

Nobody cares. It adds nothing to the topic, keep it to yourself. Bad attempt at bragging.

We as a class legit have the most play styles in the game and the most weapons yet people only wanna play the same two weapons over and over with the same build. Which at this point people know how to counter them by now. Not saying warrior doe snot need a buff or anything because it does in some areas but most of the whineing is OH WE CANT RUN THE OLD META ANYMORE LETS CRY ABOUT IT.

Again you are asuming that you know everything and the rest are just morons. You are insulting everyone here with a solid complain while pretending to know more than the rest?

I really tried it… I waited for the “tuesday patch” since the expansion first came out. The lack of attention to their players, when they are actually doing their data gathering job is plain disrepectful. Bad design done on the elite spec itself and a very bad and lazy attempt to fix things with this patch. A step in the wrong direction I might add. +% dmg to skills… my little brother could’ve given more thought than that.

I’m having fun on my scrapper and druid. One for melee, the other for support; at least those feel up to date to the content. If I want to play with my warrior I have to use the same build I’ve been using for more than 3 years now, boring.

Let’s face it, Warrior is meant for open world and instanced solo pve.

His ridiculous sustain + selfbuffs + great solo damage + tier 1ish mobility makes him pretty much the best class for just playing the game’s regular pve content with a chill (+ dungeons solo).

And before you respond with, “every class can play open world pve”, sure, but playing Warrior is the most fluent and relaxing way to do it.

Actually, since we hace elite specs, warriors is the least class to play open pve. Berseker is a troll spec. There is absolutely nothing good on it. It’s only on par with race skills, those that fits a concept but are a weaker version of another skill,.. ok; that’s how Berseker feels. Engie with hammer, dragon hunter, revenant, reaper, are all better versions of the warrior, even for open world pve. Much more fun and new, warrior’s been the same since 3 years ago.

My main was a Warrior, 3K out of 4K hours played on him. The other 1K is spread in the rest of the classes (all to 80 full equipped). Since HoT came along, it’s been the opposite.. I played my warrior till I finished the story and I have never logged him again. I don’t feel like playing him. It’s boring compared to the others now.

Seem like many people just want warrior being OP class. Why not just go play druid or DH something? Patch now is fine.

No, I want a spec that can be fun and actually brings a new playstytle to the class. Berseker as a whole for pve is nothing more than a speed buff for just a few seconds. It’s very underwhelming and boring.

I think that’s the how berserker is implemented and what you asks for sounds more likely you need complete redesign of berserker, which will definitely not gonna happen i guess.

Yup, I belive the design job was poorly done. Way off the warrior concept besides the name. Warriors are far from being the class who endures combat, but the class who only has a few seconds of combat and is crap the rest. We (as bersekers) are the worst for long fights, opposite to what one would expect of a warrior. I don’t even need to get into details, numbers, stadistics,… there is plenty of data gathered and provided from players to ANET. Free work done by the community for them, and they simply ignored it and came out with the laziest kind of fix. It is disrespectful. They tried to be original with this concept, but they failed. They should man up and fix it if they ever want to have anything decent as an esport.

I think Claw of Jormag is great as-is. We don’t need it dumbed down. You can’t do anything about leechers… I would only ask that champs be reverted back to not dropping loot during this event.

I must say, i wouldn’t mind to reverse phase 1 back to what it was before people were
constantly crying that it was too easy and we need fail timers.

At that time we didn’t had that much fearspam, also i could stand with my ranger
with healing spring before the ice-wall and use my bow instead of the slow charzookas.

And no .. it wasn’t challenging .. but it simply was much less annoying and thus in the
end more fun to do phase 1 than what it is now.

Ranger with LB is much more efficient than charzooka for the ice wall. More damage and much more attack speed. With 1.5K range trait you can shoot at ~1.8K if you manually attack.

There is huge room for improvement in this game. The engine is amazing, the graphics are great too, the dynamic is fun and fast… but it needs more than pretty colors. It needs more depth in combat than attacking and dodging. With only that this game is not different than any other console arcade game like Assasins Creed, Demon Soul or Space Marine… they all have great combat action where you dodge and attack basically. More depth, role specialization and party interaction is what separate one genre from another and GW2 lacks of that.

You’re ignoring the part where the game has been out for two years and people still use tanky gear because they prefer to use it and don’t bother using berserker.

If everyone moved on to something else, you wouldn’t have PVT heroes talking about “ressing dead zerkers” all the time.

And it’s already been explained that WvW’ers make use of a bunch of the other stats, so they aren’t “just” training wheels at all, a lot of the stat combinations in this game are used all throughout the game.

I can already predict the next answer.
“Talking about pve only, wvw and pvp don’t matter, bring up some actual arguments”

This game is extremely repetitive, there is little to no room for improvisation and the only “fun” way of doing dungeons is doing “every one is welcome” groups… allowing bad things to happen and trying to salvage every situation. If it wasn’t for new players screwing up pulls, the game is just the same thing over and over again.

just show anything from ANET before release where they talk about a game meta being dps and the rest of the gear used as training curve. I will shut up now and forever about it if ANET has something from before game release date where they say that.

Since I never claimed they said that, it would be weird for me to look for a quote. You know what its called when you create a fake position, like you did right there, and then knock it down? That’s a strawman argument.

You’re being simple-minded. Tanky gear makes you receive less damage. DPS gear makes you deal more damage. Anet clearly intended these things to be so. they did not intend tanky gear to deal more damage or DPS gear to soak more passively. That’s the point. The gear does what it does. It does what its used for. What its used for it what it does. This is so simple I feel you must be trolling if you do not understand.

In a game with a dodge button they 100% obviously intended for the best, most experienced players to rely on dodges more than passive defense in pve. This is indisputable. So what is the inverse position? they intended for the inexperienced players to rely more on passive defense. The game design is so simple and elegant it seems extremely bizarre that you believe it wasn’t intended to be so.

people answering to me in this post can’t reply without naming tank gear (set I never defended, not very good reading comprehension here). I argue about stat simplicity and the only reply I get is “training wheels”, “its for pvp” and “tank and heals”… and I’m the simple minded? on the contrary my friend, I’m trying to take this to a higher level for more than a year but it’s impossible with the replies I get. I hardly found 1 or maybe 2 forum posters able to discuss hypothetically, the rest is like stuck in what ANet implemented the way it’s implemented. If it’s not in the game then it can’t exist, not even as an idea. Balance is just something magical that comes down from heaven, not because human beings behind it thinks about stuff and make it change.

I know what being a strawman is, and my reply is not a strawman argument. That’s not even my point (probably not yours either, but many people claim ANet intended those sets as something else), I’m just replying to someone else point like I get replied many times. If the idea behind stats is that, then why is there absolutely no reference before release about it? For me, it was a well played excuse when the issue started to being noticed by many trying to justify the lame system they designed.

You don’t waste that much time creating so many combinations of stats so players can use them the first month and then move to something else. It’s not logical. I mean, you seriously think that would go through any kind of meeting? Imaging a room and someone saying that they will create a dozen of stats combinations and place them as dungeon rewards, but hey… just zerk is the important one,… the rest are just training wheels… I don’t buy it.

You think I’m here defending the holy trinity, I’m not. I have 7 out of 8 characters in zerk gear (the 8th is on rampager for the lulz). Having no trinity is great, but changing 3 forced roles for 1… its not a great improvement.

Mesket wants tanky stats to be good because of some bizarre notion of design symmetry.

This is where you are wrong… if it was me i would remove tank and heal stats completely from the game and include other stats that better suits the skills we have.

Please, don’t assume things on me just because I take sides in the argument. This is NOT what I want.

Just because we don’t run Tanky or Healing stats in PVE doesn’t mean that those armors don’t have a place. Mainly in sPvP and WvW. These armors are not useless and they do have their place.

Again with the pvp. Yes that is the use that people give to those sets now. But those sets where originally placed (the vast majority and variety of sets) as PVE rewards; to use in PVP? it doesn’t much sense. Like hybrid said, I also doubt the game was envisioned as it is today, and my point is that it would be a much more interesting game if they sit their cats for a second to improve the content we have in a way all sets fits in the current meta.

And for the love of god im starting to think that the ones that truly love tank stats is the zerk people… they can’t reply to a post without naming it once.

(before someone comes with the training wheels excuse… find me a “training wheels gear” feature explained before release)

It’s self-evident. If you fresh install the game at launch and you die alot you will add tankier gear. If you don’t die alot your natural inclination will be to experiment by adding DPS gear. I don’t know how you can fail to see the intention there.

Did they envision a state of the game where 99% of the player base ran full DPS gear in pve? Doubtful. But then again I don’t think they envisions a state of the game where there was no new dungeon/challenging content for over a year, either.

I would agree with the self-evident if its not because every time something is self-evident for the rest we get called many things… so in order to avoid double standards, just show anything from ANET before release where they talk about a game meta being dps and the rest of the gear used as training curve. I will shut up now and forever about it if ANET has something from before game release date where they say that.

THIS is exactly what I’ve been saying since the first day the zerk vs build variety discussion started. I also doubt the game was envisioned in that way and all the explanations of other sets being training wheels and having just one meta is fine is a product of people adapting on the current game and not what was planned initially. Just that. Now we can agree that there is only one zerk meta, the rest are worthless and currently only worth a dime using them in pvp.

RNG as a concept: Discuss

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Mesket.5728

Mesket.5728

At the heart, there’s 3 basic options:
1. Mostly RNG
2. No RNG
3. Hyrbid RNG (where most games are)

1) Terrible. It might work for small projects or mobile/flash games. It shouldn’t be used as a model in any serious game. (IMO) The worst model that can be applied for a game like this.

2) The best but it requires some serious thinking. The expectation should be placed in the content, not in the rewards. Every players knows the rewards, its only frustrating when the reward is not there. eg: Killing the dragon should be the amazing thing that happened, not getting his scales or tooth.

3) Its obvious when games want to keep you in. Feels like a forced way to tell you “hey, keep logging in… you will be rewarded not by what you do but for how many times you do it…”. Its an easy and inclusive solution since you can turn down content, making it easier so more people can do it but only those who did it X number of times gets the reward. I personally don’t like it but I prefer this rather than having all in RNG.

Hybrid RNG its like: “You know you get paid at the end of the month, every month… but there is only a small chance that you will receive your Christmas bonus at the end of the year, no matter how hard or lazy you worked for it”. It’s frustrating for those who tried it hard.

now tell me which one is best in Mario Kart?

snes: toad
64: yoshi

Thank you for making my point. In no case the fastest is the best and the “balanced” exceed because the tracks are designed in a way where you need every “stat” and they all sum to be the best (stats being acceleration, agility, final speed, you know…). Balanced stats in one character works best since its a “single” competition. GW2 is about teams, why not design it in a way where all “builds” are needed to really exceed? I’ll tell you why: level design is not an easy task and the more variables you add the harder it gets and GW2 has quite a lot of variables, but that is their own challenge. One (IMO) they failed at.

You don’t do game design 101 in a project like this, you go beyond the average 1990 arcade game.

No stopping you eh? At least you didn’t make a complete fool of yourself by saying 90s.

Game design doesn’t seem to mean what you think it means.

average anything is bad. that’s why it’s average. in any year. ever.

First, I don’t see how while generalizing saying 90s would make me a fool? maybe its a local thing in US, I don’t know. Care to elaborate? I could’ve said the 90s or the 80s, no difference really, it’s an example.

I’ve been working in some projects as game designer myself, all amateur; but still, I know what it is about. I’d love to see GW2 GDD and see how many inconsistencies and turns around they had since they started, specially since released which is kinda worst.

I would live inside the Tower of Nightmares if it was possible.

Similar case… just hit 9K AP and being playing since open beta, but since I didn’t participate in some of the old LS I got no points. Temporary content drawbacks I guess…

An option to replay those stories would be great, specially since most of them included unique content like molten dungeon or the tower of nightmares… IMO it was wrong to remove access to it. At least LS2 is getting it right.

well.. might have aswell a granpa aged, transsexual, cat ogre, apple addicted, spy engineer in the game…. wow that came out even weirder then i imagined

Don’t forget, he enjoys human boob-eerrr apples too. Would that make him slightly a perv?

To me, that just confirms he is a he quite honestly.

Charr ladies doesnt have bewbs,… he is into some inter-species weird fetish (kind of bestiality)… well, love is what love is! don’t judge!

Well I don’t know, maybe it’s just me being old fashioned. I find it the way it is pretty shallowed. Specially considering this game tried to break forward the mmos design and at the very end it just killed a lot of the genre and moved the bar towards arcade games. When I think of RPG games, being online or not, I preffer using my head over my fingers; this game is pure fingers… you don’t need to think at all.

dragon age: origins i’m sure people initially used trinity compositions but then people found out you could just stack mages (up to 3 if the player created a mage), load them up with damage, CC and healing spells and just explode mobs with no effort.

You honestly find this good game design? I find it terrible, specially if the same can apply to an MMORPG where the whole game is based on re-playability. You said it yourself… game design 101… this is a AAA game with lots invested. You don’t do game design 101 in a project like this, you go beyond the average 1990 arcade game.

what this guy said means little… Don’t idealize him; he did it wrong, and no longer works for Anet.

He was there for the initial development of the game and the initial intentions of the game, therefore I think his opinion is relevant.

You are taking his opinion after release, when he was trying to justify the horror design made. ANet are still wondering what the cat to do with conditions after the mess the original designers left.

Yes you do. It’s called balancing. Balance its not only comparing players against players but also players against environment. If you provide hammers, the world should have nails… in GW2 they provided us hammers, screw-driver and wrenches while there are only nails in the world. People using Screw-drivers and Wrenches wants something to have fun as well.

And in GW2, a game primarily balanced by PvP, the balancing is fine. Many stat combinations are used, many builds are used and all is well. This same stat diversity exists in WvW.

Simple NO. WvW reward was PVT gear while PVE reward was a vast diversity in gear sets… you say they get it backwards and release a game with the rewards mixed up? It took them quite some time, several months, to include the other sets in WvW as rewards. I hardly think pvp was the reason to put many sets ingame.

The balance here is that all stats can complete content, but there are others that complete it quicker, and as it’s based around risk/reward (the glassier you are the faster you clear with all risks associated) the balance is fine. The fact that the risk isn’t that high is a side-effect of the game having the same instances for like two years, not an error in the design of the game.

We agree here. Though I wouldn’t blame time entirely. Did you went back to PVT when the first fractals were introduced? Or when the “new ones” where introduced? I agree that once you learn the game by hard, it becomes Simon… you count, you dodge and all risk is lost in the equation.

Anything with choices will inevitably have a best choice.

Yes, in a game bad designed that is what happens… now tell me which one is best in Mario Kart? you will see you have as many opinions as characters there are…That’s how you do a game. The balance is not just in the characters but also in the tracks. If tracks were simpler, Bowser and Kong would be best, since its all about who race faster. GW2 allows one set to be far superior, simply because the content allows it, not because the rules are set for one to be.

I like the game, I just wish it was better,… as it is, it feels like a Mario Bros without platforms or a Mario Kart without gadgets.

You should start solo/duo/trio dungeons without a Thief. I think you’ll find the dungeon design isn’t bad at all.

I already did duos and I’m working on my solos (I’m old and my connection don’t help either :P ), its really fun and all but one thing doesn’t take the other.

Except Robert Hrouda already said…

what this guy said means little… Don’t idealize him; he did it wrong, and no longer works for Anet.

You don’t make a set with no defensive stats and full offense, and then one which has boon duration and healing power and then try to claim everything is equal, that’s insane.

The gear stats aren’t worthless at all. In pvp every amulet is viable in one build or another. In WvW the full gamut of gearsets are viable. In PvE, among experienced players there is little variety, however among beginers the concept of tanky-gear-as-training-wheels not only exists but it works perfectly as intended.

Lets agree to disagree… I strongly doubt it was intended this way. If the sets were for pvp and wvw they would’ve been there to begin with and if those were supposed to be trainig wheels in pve then zerk should be all over the place and its only acquirable in certin places. Clearly they intended a game where everything was equal and made a horrible job designing content. Dungeons are terrible compared to other games dungeons, they could’ve done and empty room with a boss and it would be the same thing. A lot of resources wasted because they lack in one area.

Would I have designed the game differently? Probably so, I would have designed the game without gear stats and made all character building choices locked to traits, runes and sigils. But that isn’t relevant because its not going to change, won’t change and SHOULDN’T change. This is the game we have, and it’s kitten good actually. I can’t make you quit the game dude, but if you don’t enjoy the game for what it is you’re simply driving yourself crazy by being frustrated by what it isn’t. I would suggest you find a game you like better and be happy, but I doubt you’ll listen.

That would’ve been a different approach and its totally viable. You say this is the game we have, well in the game we have there are other sets and players choose to use them. This is an MMORPG and people play it like so, don’t pick on players who chooses to use other sets, they are just playing the game we have as it is.

I like the game, I just wish it was better,… as it is, it feels like a Mario Bros without platforms or a Mario Kart without gadgets.

What does wearing tanky gear have to do with speccing for support? Does Sentinel’s gear make your Wall of Reflect last longer?

Speaking conceptually, the faster you divorce yourself from the gear = playstyle mindset the better you’ll be. I mean it’s only been two years and I still have to put this fire out on a weekly basis so maybe I’m hoping for people to learn something they never will.

Maybe after 2 years you will realize that you are wrong? Its an MMORPG after all, gearing, stat/trait/perk/talent (w/e it’s called in dif. games) build and play-style goes hand by hand. It is defined by genre and its not like ANet wanted to changed that, they designed the game wrong and ended up where we are. The fact we all use the same dps gear is not a design feature, it’s a symptom of a badly designed game. You can’t blame players for playing an MMORPG like an MMORPG.

The problem for you is that I am not wrong at all. I am describing the game as it is, based on the mechanics that actually exist within the real game. You’re describing a fantasy scenario based on other games and other mechanics and philosophies that do not exist in Guild Wars 2.

So I’ll say it again, the faster you can divorce yourself from the concept that gear informs your playstyle the happily you’ll be and the more you’ll enjoy this game. Until then, you’ll be spitting into the wind.

Imagine for a second you are in total control of ANet and GW2 was not released yet… you know there is a budget, human hours to be allocated, and you see the project items… one of them being gear stats and balance.

Knowing what you know now… Would you let them waste that time and money developing the number of gear sets we have now? would you tell them to stop designing more stat combinations?

Ok,… the game is out, “the damage is done”… what would you do now? you have worthless gear sets out there and a game that doesn’t match the tools you are providing. Wouldn’t it be good to add or modify content so more gear options are worth using? wouldn’t the game be much more interesting if every gear set is used?

Its not just me who needs to divorce from the idea, but the hundreds coming to complain about the same thing every now and then, and the thousands that are being called baddies because they think they are playing the game well choosing other gear sets thinking this is an RPG and they have options. If I’m wrong please tell me why do the others sets even exist? (be smarter than the guy who said it was for pvp, while they are pve rewards).

I know how the game is. I have 7 lvl 80s all equip in the same way, all full zerk and it is boring as hell…
