Last time I remember the map chat getting truly disgusting was after a Draconis Mons wyvern fight failed a couple weeks ago.
The commander was being extremely rude and totally deserved the bashing he got, but even with that, he still had a point.
Having to explain what CC is, as some people were suggesting, in the fifth LS map of an expansion full of breakbars sounds somewhat depressing. There will be for sure some players not familiar with the terminology, but when a zerg consistently fails on every single breakbar (which happens all the time btw), that’s not a problem with newcomers, that’s people not giving a kitten, so I can easily understand the frustration. It doesnt’ excuse the rudeness tough.

Agreed, it doesn’t excuse rudeness. When someone tags up for ANY event, they need to know there is usually going to be a mix of people who just play for fun and not to get maximum rewards all the time, and people who aren’t fast learners when it comes to mmorpg mechanics and what not (maybe new to this type of pc gaming or perhaps they don’t play all that often). Sure when you want that CC bar to break and you’re unloading all the CC you have, sometimes it’s easy to assume everyone else knows as much as we do, but I remember being in that same situation and not knowing what my cc skills were exactly. Also even if people know what cc is (just using cc as one example), people might not be familiar with the class or weapon setup they are using atm, which those of us that make many alts can relate to.

I absolutely adore the bulk of the GW2 community, It’s amazing how cool people are in this game. However, there are screwed up people in every aspect of today’s world though.. egotistic, elitist, blame everyone but themselves, take “winning” in a video game too seriously, insult others who they feel should play to their standards type of @$$h*1e$. But screw them, they don’t speak for everyone just because they insult people and make it sound like the world is on their side. In general in GW2 if you’re not the one starting stuff in chats or purposely doing something that annoys your allies, you shouldn’t ever deal with toxicity (at least not in pve. In wvw (CD) I don’t really see much toxicity unless it’s just one bad egg that nobody is amused by).

If you’re doing everything right in most pve areas, and still see a lot of toxicity… that’s bad luck I suppose…?

The more different things you do in the game, the more enjoyable the game can be imo. As someone who is not in a guild, and HATES pug grouping for small group things (can’t stand seeing elitist kittens insult others over skill level and what not)… I miss out on fractals, dungeons, raids, pvp, and even more organized wvw play. Yet, I still find gw2 has more to offer than any other game I’ve played. And we have PoF coming out.

So yeah, I’d say the game is worth trying again 100%.

Regrets on Legendary Crafting

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

It was fun the first time I made one (bifrost), but the 4 I made after that in 2016 and now soon to be 6 all together make me wonder what the hell I’m thinking. But somehow, I keep making legendaries, I guess I might as well use the mats for something. Plus I do love that we can change stats whenever we want on them. But I still say farming relentlessly for my first couple legendary weapons kinda ruined the game for me for a while, so I even took a break because it started to feel like the game was just about farming for gold and completing collections.

In the end, I am someone who is obsessed with customization, so I don’t regret it. Although it is a pain when you make a legendary weapon for a tiny asura character and you can barely see the effects of the weapon… ya know, because it’s so small.

The only one I regret making is bolt, because it looks like garbage. But, I dropped the precursor… so it’s not like I had to go through the whole farm.

Playing a toon of the opposite gender?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

When I was a young lad I felt the same OP but as the years went by I began to shift from seeing the char on screen as myself to just seeing it as a protagonist on screen. Meaning playing female char’s became a thing for me (I still also play male char’s as well) where I also got the added bonus of looking at some nice eye candy.

I had the same thing.. Used to think it was weird for people to play opposite genders in games, but eventually I started opening up to playing female characters because as a straight guy, I figured why not play a character I like to look at? (I love anything that resembles a sexy woman). Also, as someone who LOVES to customize stuff and make everything look nice, female characters in gw2 (and in some other games) generally have more unique clothing and hair styles, making them more fun to customize… so yeah, I play a few female characters now, but only asuras atm because they are freaking adorable (especially when they make that cute little “rahhhhhh”).

Your biggest fails in GW2?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

I’d say my biggest fail was no-life farming for my first legendary weapons before really learning the game and trying all the different things the game had to offer. It started to feel like the game was just about farming mats and gold and not fun.

But eventually when I came back after a break, I decided to just play where I feel like it, and not spend hours a day farming the same few events and what not. Wish I had done that at the beginning before starting on a legendary, and that would be a piece advice I’d give to any new player in GW2.

The Mounts are Useless

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

The point people make about GW2 not needing mounts is well taken, I felt the same before hearing of the PoF expansion. However, I think that this could be pretty cool if the developers add more activities using the mounts… like the race for example. Maybe they could add a new group of mini games like in Lion’s Arch for mounts, like a mount version of sanctum sprint or something (yes the current mount race is kinda like it, but it’s too plain and there are no skills used in it which make it kinda stupid imo). Would be fun to see more mini games.

VanHalenRules.5243

When I first started playing the game I had similar thoughts of “am I doing this right?” “am I supposed to be doing something else” and such for questing and exploring. I think the main thing new players should be encouraged to do is find a helpful guild right away, which maybe could be something they add to the story line or whatever (unless there is something and I didn’t notice because I don’t care about the story). A helpful experienced guild that is willing to teach is really essential for certain things imo like wvw and pvp so that new players get a taste of what the game has to offer asap. Also from personal experience, I didn’t even click on the wvw or pvp icon much when I was new because it seemed so confusing and I thought I would just mess things up for my teammates by not knowing what to do (still have never done real pvp for that reason, only have done the old dailies).

Anyway, finding a helpful teaching guild is the best thing for new players.

I Want to Purchase 9 Copies of GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

I plan on doing that too… Well, not 9 copies but one or 2 extras for the login rewards as well because since I quit gold farming last year, the extra login rewards can help craft and such while still just going to where I have the most fun… which has been wvw lately (which SUCKS for gold earning).

I always wondered though whether or not Anet cares about stuff like this. I hope not, because like you said, it’s supporting them.

Open World and Instanced reward Tracks

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

I agree, but first you’d need to nerf the drop of ascended chests and/or pure gold you get in fractals (not dramatically, but nerf it). As for raids it would be more interesting, since raids have not so good rewards in general if you compare the level of difficulty.

Agreed. The reason people live in fractals is because they are more rewarding than most other content in the game. Where else can you consistently farm for possibly the best gold source in the game AND regularly drop ascended chests (which would cost a LOT of gold to craft instead, take that into consideration)? And now there should be a reward track?

I think if you add reward tracks to fractals or raids, there might be a HEAVY drop off in people playing all other content.

Question about wvw chats

VanHalenRules.5243

Is /m chat now a global chat since the update or something? I used /m chat and it seemed to trigger some people, which never happened before if I used it before the update. Sorry if this is a stupid question, because I took a break from the game for a while until recently, and haven’t kept up to date with changes. Also I played mostly pve before the new changes (I did wvw on and off a little), so I was used to /m meaning map chat. Would have asked this in squad chat, but didn’t want to break the focus of our war group.

So, a quick briefing about the chat channels and which ones should be used in certain situations would be appreciated. Obviously squad/party/say/whisper chats are still the same.

Best usage of salvaging for crafting?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

Seems like you are salvaging exactly the same way I do… basic for everything less than rare, yellow salvage kit for rare, and yeah I’d recommend using the BL salvage kit sometimes (not always) for exotics. I only use them if the item has an expensive sigil or rune that’s worth more than the entire piece, or for the exotic items that you can’t sell at all but has a valuable upgrade item. But if you do salvage all exotics with the BL kit because you have too many kits, well… at least you will get a lot of dark matter.

NO!!! I hate other MMOs in which I must pick a certain race for the class I like because of the racials! I want to play the race I enjoy aesthetically and I don’t want to worry about racial skills / passives! GW2 is doing it RIGHT.

I’d prefer not to have to create and play a Charr (or any other race) because that race has the option for the best build.

What's the point of playing this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

I’ve been playing this game since summer of 2015. I was really into it at first, but my interest slowly decreased until I fully stopped playing it for five months. Then I came back and… really, what’s the point?

This game finds a way to punish players every chance it gets. I’ve been giving competitive modes a shot, and it’s just… beyond broken. I’m not a fan of the meta. I strongly believe people have the right to play how they want and be original to come up with their own sort builds while corresponding to a role. That’s what I tried. And I got punished for it. Whether it’s PvP or WvW, none of my 22 characters is able to do anything. A lot of players in WvW hold a major advantage most. How in the world did this mode once attracted low-level characters? I feel useless in group fights and I can’t solo against any type of class unless the other player is utterly inexperienced. The same goes for PvE as well.

Let’s not forget about how grindy this game is. How disappointing its latest content has been. The story was one of the main reasons why I stuck around, but ever since HoT came out it’s been just getting worse where I’m literally cringing at the thought of it.

It also doesn’t help that I feel quite lonely in-game. I’ve been trying to find new people to play with and joined several types of guilds. People aren’t just interested in me whatsoever. I don’t consider myself to be a saint or an kitten; I try to be friendly and even help new players. What I get are people who end up using me for some of their own goals, including new players. I give them my support, tips and ask and they just end up ignoring me once I ceased to be useful to them. The community is not what it once was. It’s bad. The people are just cruel and moronic. I was even stalked and harassed by a player. I got proof of its actions and reported it several times. I even sent tickets to ANet and nothing happened. The player is still out there, making new accounts to reach me again and again.

All I want is to have fun, but this game feels like a frustrating chore where nothing feels rewarding whatsoever.

This is like reading Skip Bayless talking about LeBron James when LeBron has the best game of his career. Is this really what people think of the same game I find to be by far the best mmorpg ever? I must have been hiding under a rock.

Honestly, I’ve had some kind of similar feelings in GW2 after I crafted legendaries… Just became more of a repetitive chore rather than random fun, so I too quit for a little while to play a different game. But the more I played any other game, the more I started to think about how flawed they were compared to GW2 (they did soooo many things right in GW2, I think the developers should win some kind of nobel prize or something), and I started to really miss GW2. But at the same time, I was getting tired of gaming in general, which can really give a negative outlook on any game you play. When I came back and started to do more than just dailies again, I found the best way to enjoy the game is not have any goals or expectations at all… Just go to the maps I enjoy the most and play the events I enjoy. Also try different things all the time, instead of sticking to one map and one event a lot… that too can make the game feel like it loses it’s fun really fast.

FAVORITE GW2 maps?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

After reading the other thread, and seeing how many of us disagree on our least favorite maps (besides most people including TD and a few others in there), it made me wonder which maps we DO like the most (and why).

Let’s go with 2 categories: 1) Top 5 maps in the game that we love the most for purely the overall look. 2) Top 5 maps in the game that have the general gameplay we enjoy the most. Also please explain why of course.

My top 5 most beautiful maps:
1. Caledon Forest (amazingly beautiful map)
2. Desert Borderlands (the map is just plain awesome)
3. Timberline Falls (Love the way it looks)
4. Snowden Drifts (I am a snow person)
5. Auric Basin (it’s pretty beautiful and chill)
Honorable mention: Silverwastes, Hoelbrak and Fireheart Rise.

Top 5 maps to play in:
1. Tangled Depths ( I LOVE me some chak, and love the way the map looks. The events are fun, fairly quick and the map is just overall rewarding. My favorite meta event too.)
2. Cursed Shore (The events in this map are full of zombie waves that drop good loot. Best events in Tyria by far.)
3. Silverwastes (gold gold gold. I love the desert style map, the mobs, and the forts. Also the jumping puzzle is nice and peaceful if you’re in the mood for it.)
4. Verdant Brink (Good events, rewarding map to play in, fun to explore, best HoT map for overall gathering)
5. Auric Basin (Beautiful and chill map, quick HP runs, fun events, rewarding meta, good for gathering.) Only bad thing about the map is the meta event can be a pain in the @$$ for reasons such as: 1. When you need to get into tyria for story instance or for any other reason. 2. When you want to do the meta and most people are doing HP’s. 3. When you only came for the HP’s and most people are doing meta.

Worst Guild Wars 2 Map?

3. Fields of Ruin- As I mentioned in map chat there yesterday, it’s a lvl 30-40 map that you have to go through a lvl 40-50 map (because there are no other maps attached to it), which makes it less likely for explorers to find.

I guess if you ignore the gate from DR.

Well, indeed I was not aware of that… But still, I was speaking from a new player’s perspective if they start out as a charr and wander from there.

Hi! Welcome to wonderful world of GW2!

To level crafting professions, you want to craft armor parts for your crafting level and then craft the available runes… then use the discover option and combine them for new recipes. If you run out of options, try just crafting anything that gives you xp (preferably the orange ones if they are available) until the next group of recipes are unlocked. If you don’t have the materials, just explore, kill stuff, do events, and you will get gear that you can salvage for materials… or sometimes you will get the materials themselves. You can also select “deposit all materials” to send them straight into your storage bank and you can use them for crafting without needing to withdraw them.

Edit- Sorry, forgot to mention gathering wood, food and metal.

Worst maps imo from 5-1.

5. Brisban Wildlands- About a 3rd of the map is an underground skrit cave… boring.

4. Straits of Devastation- Too much water in the middle. Events suck compared to CS and Malchor’s Leap. Um… Not sure what else to say.

3. Fields of Ruin- As I mentioned in map chat there yesterday, it’s a lvl 30-40 map that you have to go through a lvl 40-50 map (because there are no other maps attached to it), which makes it less likely for explorers to find. Also most of the map is plain and boring compared to the other really nice Ascalon maps. Other than the Ogre Wars event, I have no reason to ever go there.

2. Bloodtide Coast- Boring looking map with too much water. Events are lame (other than TT). Just a map that has nothing interesting in it.

1. EMBER BAY- Everything about this map sucks except for the wurm event.

Now can someone do this same thread but for favorite maps? :p

Edit- Can’t believe someone put EOTM in this list. I love the layout of that map.

Toxic event farmers still an issue

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

Flat nerfing the rewards isn’t the answer, although a cap on what you can acquire before the event completes wouldn’t be bad. (honestly you should get less reward for a failed event)

I suggest:
1. Make completion more rewarding than fail farming.

2. Make event more frequent, because clearly people want to farm.

3. Reduce Scaling range. OR 4. add an enrage timer that will actually wipe players if the boss isn’t defeated.

5. Make it if event fails nothing will spawn for a long period of time.

Agreed, especially with 1 and 5.

While I’m here in a CS thread, I’m just gonna bring this up… I love Arah defense, and no I will not let it fail if I am in the map. If anyone doesn’t like it, oh well!

Lake Doric's Map

in Living World

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

VanHalenRules.5243

Interesting how this trend continues, people complaining about the farm in Lake Doric because they have some faulty notion that if the players who are at the farm weren’t farming, they would be elsewhere in the map doing events and helping other players.

I already have the ugly mask. I have the mini tonic and the mini fire tornado. I specifically created an Engi just for this farm. If I wasn’t occasionally farming, I wouldn’t be in this map AT ALL.

+1 Only reason I go to LD since the achievements were completed is a quick jade shard farm (the farm there is so quick, it’s literally in and out like going to a convenience store for a pack of gum), and for the leather farm. Same goes for the other LW maps, I just go there for the nodes and that’s it.

I don’t believe the LD farm is a problem… It’s not like people being mildly inactive there scales up the events and makes it tough for the active players. Like for instance, the afk people in SW (especially the ones that afk from amber-south lane) that scale up the fights and make it really difficult for active players… and it’s not like it’s helpful to anyone, because the rewards of the map are based on event completion and not killing as many mobs as possible. I think something should be done about those people before something is done about the farming in LD.

Sometimes. I only really play 2-3 toons regularly. I enjoy all my toons, the issue is I have this mindset that I must progress each one through the story in the right order, trying to complete everything as I go along. With another 6-7 toons, that becomes a chore and i lose motivation.

I also dont raid, pvp or wvw. So apart from my fractals char, all my toons are essentially set up for the same game mode.

(Suggestions) Character Models and POI in VB

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VanHalenRules.5243

Not sure if one or both of these has been suggested in the past…

1: Please give us an option when making a new character to use the exact same model as one of our existing characters, if it’s of the same race. This way we can make our characters look exactly the same without all the guessing during character creation.

Edit- Or at least allow that option on the total makeover kit.

2: Please make “Last Leap” point of interest in Verdant Brink visible on the map like all of the others. It’s only visible when you activate it, so to any player that doesn’t know it’s there it’s really like finding a needle in a hay stack. Even if you’re trying to follow a guide map, it’s tricky.

Agreed, the GW2 community in general are really positive and helpful. Best out of any game I’ve played.

A huge credit has to go to the developers for that though also, they made a hell of a game (best mmorpg overall by far imo). Games effect it’s players’ morale, and I think GW2 doesn’t really give us players a reason to be “toxic”. So many things done right in GW2, I think most players are happy playing it.

-Easy, nice class to play
-PvE: Mapping, events, questing, etc..
-Good for solo play
-Less need to swap weapons
-Easy for beginners

With all of the above in mind, I would strongly suggest giving Ranger a try. It’s great for solo PvE roaming, and it’s really useful for other game modes that you might get into later on if you become dedicated to the game.

This is my build for pve- http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNAQJATRnUqA1sitqAGsAEtgl9A7pDcEeawx186fdpJEAOblI3zA-TBSBABmpEkS1fIa/BAeSBXcIAy7CAclyP801EA4A43fz3fDc+5nf+5n3v/+7v/+7QAWB-e

If you don’t want to heal, or you don’t have HoT… then I’d swap druid for probably nature magic. For weapon, you can just camp longbow for the most part.

For WvW I use same everything except: some utility skills, swap beast mastery for wilderness survival, and use better nourishment (buffs from food). Also I use a different alternative pet (I like pink moa as main pet all the time for the funny screetch and daze skill, but that’s just personal preference).

Pretty easy to learn, and still fun. Even with berserker gear, still has great survivability.

I hope this helps.

Why not ranger? Just wondering, because once I started playing it, I never looked back. Even after making all 9 classes’ elite specs, and trying them in different game modes, I still found ranger to be the best all around class, even with most of the utility skills being more for specific build types (traps…etc). Even with full berserker armor I barely ever die in any pve mode (long bow/Greatsword combo), and in wvw it’s very fun and I have not found the need to switch gear stats yet.

I’d suggest playing around with different weapon combos on all of the classes you have, it’s pretty fun and will help you decide which types of play styles you like.

Since I patched today (which was probably about 12 hours ago) the game has been non stop crashing whenever I’ve logged in to play. I’ve only played in the new map today for the most part, so not sure if it’s a problem with that map or the entire game.
