GW2 and unique classes

Esplen.3940

A new profession for GW2 is certainly no magic bullet; it would just be a flash in the pan, knee jerk content infusion that would utterly fail to address larger flaws in the game.

To continue off this:
It would also bring less balance to the table, impress less people, lose it’s novelty after a week, and end up being underwhelming or overpowered. Additionally, it’ll be flashier than a Guardian fighting Lupicus, making boss fights already hard enough to pay attention to animations, while showing that the Anet teams are working on things that are unimportant at this iteration of the game.

interchangable weapon skills

Esplen.3940

it would make balancing PvP a pain, but if they were to test it with WvW/PvE, I think it should be fine. Most weapon skills for each class follow a theme.

Example:
Mesmer:
2 + 3 = Clone Summon + Gap Close (or disengage).
4 + 5 = Phantasm + Utility (usually involves daze, except for GS [GS 3 should be the utility, whereas GS 5 is the disengage. GS 3 used to have daze and therefore followed this pattern]).
The pattern gets changed around between 1 and 2 handed weapons, but most, if not all, weapon sets have all 4 of those signatures.

You can look at other classes and figure out the patterns.

Once you find the patterns, it’s not a matter of “this slot can be this instead” but more of “I can change my XXX signature with YYY” (example: Sword leap on Mesmer. Instead of spawning a clone that leaps, perhaps the Mesmer leaps forward, and, upon hitting an enemy, spawns a clone. There is no secondary action with this skill.)

But I agree, it would be nice.

it would also be nice to be able to wield one handed weapons without being forced to use an offhand.

Noone, in this game can deal that crazy amount of damage in a single strike but the thief.

Not even warriors can deal +7K with a single strike. The only way to deal that crazy damage is to channel 100 blades for 3.5 seconds. By the time that skill gets to 3.5 seconds the opponent has already gotten out of the attack. It only works for NPC that just stand in front of you and don’t move.

Warrior:
Kill Shot.
Eviscerate.

Guardian:
Shield of Wrath.
Conflagrate.
Mighty Blow.

Mesmer:
Mind Wrack.
Phantasmal Berserker.

Necromancer:
Life Blast.

Elementalist:
Dragon’s Tooth.

Engineer:

Blunderbuss.
Grenade Barrage.

Ranger:

Superior Rune of Perplexity

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

hi for the “apply on interrupt” what actual abilities count as this?

Thank you sorry if it was already posted above.

Any skill that applies a Control Effect and pops up with an Interrupt on your screen. Fear is not a control skill, it’s a condition.

Buffing one class due to a new item being added that nullifies the way said class stands out isn’t power creep.

You just defined power creep. Buff mesmers and then mesmer + runes of perplexity will be a whole new level of over powered.

Except Mesmer’s have had so few buffs and so many nerfs that it’d be hard to make them overpowered with this rune.

If you look at it, the main way of getting Confusion on an opponent is either being Shatter (scales with damage, not condition damage), Glamour (relatively long cooldown for 5 seconds of Confusion, 8 when traited/fooded, condition damage build), or by being an Asura with Pain Inverter AND being one of the above.

If you were, however, a Shatter Mesmer, you could stack about 20 Confusion on a really bad enemy if you were able to micro-manage and position well. Of course, you’re still going to be a Direct Damage dealer, not a Condition Damage dealer.

If you were a Glamour Mesmer, you’re most likely not going to have access to a full arsenal of Interrupts.

A full arsenal of Mesmer Interrupts is:
Utilities
Signet of Domination (1s Cast, 3s Stun, kitten Cooldown) (Traited: 36s Cooldown)
Mantra of Distraction (0s Cast, 1s Daze, 5s Cooldown + 2.75 Precast + 30s Cooldown Between 2 Charges) (Traited: 3 Charges, 24s Cooldown Precast)
Technobabble (3s Daze, kitten Cooldown, Asura Racial)

Shatters
Diversion (0s Cast, 1s Daze, kitten Cooldown, up to 4 hits) (Traited: Diversion is AoE, You can explode as well, 36s Cooldown)

Weapons
Counter Blade (1s Daze, 15s Cooldown) (Traited: 12s Cooldown)
Illusionary Wave (450 Knockback, 30s Cooldown) (Traited: 24s Cooldown)
Magic Bullet (2s Stun, 2s Daze, 25s Cooldown) (Traited: 20s Cooldown)
Chaos Storm (1s Daze, 0-25 Unpredictable Daze, 35s Cooldown) (Traited; 28s Cooldown)
Temporal Curtain (600 Pull, 25s Cooldown) (Traited: 20s Cooldown)

So you’ll have, at most, access to 12 interrupts (2 weapons, + 3 mantra shots, + signet, + racial, + iPersona shatter).

If you count getting 5 dazes on 5 targets with a Chaos Storm (highly improbable, and impossible to stack the interrupts as it’ll perma-daze them), you will have 36 interrupts.

If we count single target only, you can potentially maintain Confusion on an opponent, but you’d have to trait specifically for interrupting (all the Interrupt traits are spread out across multiple diverse, annoying traitlines).

The reason why we’re complaining is because these Runes outshine any form of Confusion a Mesmer can inflict, and we, before this Rune, had access to the most methods of inflicting Confusion.

This one Rune basically throws any Confusion Mesmer out the window because there’s no way we can keep up with it. (Note: If you were to run with full interrupts as your build, you’d have no method of dealing damage as you’d want to trait into them for cooldown reduction, and your build would look something like 10/20/30/0/10 or 0/20/30/0/20 or 20/0/30/0/20 or 20/0/20/0/30.)

What selan’s argument is saying is that we got our Confusion nerfed because applying Confusion in an AoE to a zerg is OP, then Anet goes and releases a Rune that allows people to apply Confusion in an AoE to a zerg. Wait a minute…

Tl;dr: I don’t care that everyone has access to Confusion, that’s not my problem. My problem is that there is no purpose in being a Confusion Mesmer (which used to be a build, a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away).

He doesn’t just have armguards on both sides; his right armguard is blue, his left armguard is red. And I don’t think it’s any co-incidence in their design that his two former apprentices, zojja and kudu, have seemingly identical armguards between them.

Incidentally, Snaff was almost certainly a mesmer (Most of his research was into mind-technology interfacing, and their master plan for kralkatorrik basiclly involved dominating his mind), not to mention the abundance of purple in his getup

Actually, he has Red, Blue, and Purple in his getup which means that both Kudu and Zojja derived their armors from him (each taking a different stance on his research).

It’s a very deep symbolic meaning, because Zojja is taking the Blue (typically related to doing good) colors and the right arm (she ended as his right hand apprentice). She looked up to Snaff like a father.

Kudu, however, took the Red side and the left armguard. He believed that Snaff’s research into utilizing the dragon’s energy was good, but believed it could be better. He wanted to control the dragon’s energy and use it for his own purposes. He took Snaff’s research then twisted it for his own deeds.

Zojja, on the other hand, left Snaff’s research alone because she knew (that Snaff knew) that the research into controlling dragonic energy was too dangerous.

It’s very lore-oriented.

Low FPS Help

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Esplen.3940

First off, set your frame limiter to 30 or 60 fps (if you’re so used to having it at 120 fps and can’t abide anything lower than that, well I doubt that’s you since you’re stuck at 16-60, but if you HAVE to, try putting it there). This will stop the game from trying to work too hard even when it can’t, and will actually give you[r machine] a better time.

Secondly, tone down your shadows, like I said before, that is one of the most intensive settings in [almost] any game. From there, just mix and match with other settings until you find what you’re comfortable with (in terms of FPS vs graphics), I’m sure you can run with nearly everything max, but shadows might want to be med/low/off.

Also, tweak LoD distance and reflections. I’m not sure if you like to look far off into the distance and having mobs render. In WvW it’s useful, but since you’re having fps problems, it’s also going to be a larger problem in WvW.

[Poll] New Changes Healthy for Mesmer Class?

in Mesmer

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

@ODB, our profession mechanic is shatters and illusions. As such, should we not be intended to use shatters in every fight? Is it their intent to make us use illusions in every fight?

Why, then, do we spawn things that deal a significant portion of our total dps while staying alive while our profession mechanic relies on destroying them?

If you don’t understand that, let me explain it to you: You can only make cakes, but you’re allergic to eggs. If you want to eat a cake, you have to work around the fact that you’re allergic to eggs. Why, then, are you only capable of making cakes?

If you still don’t understand…
Illusions don’t add to our dps. They account for a large portion of our dps.
Burst skills don’t add to Warrior DPS, they’re [supposed to] account for a large portion of their dps. (Bar Eviscerate, since someone will axe me about it.)

However, Warriors get a large damage bonus for not using their profession mechanic when they don’t, in most builds, need to use it to improve dps.

Mesmers, on the other hand, don’t get a large bonus for not using their profession mechanic when they don’t, in most builds, need to use it to improve dps.

In fact, both Mesmer and Warrior profession mechanics can and do hurt DPS outputs by activating them with builds (not all, but many).

In this feature patch, Warriors not using their profession mechanic was addressed by giving them more incentive to use it and by making persist less after a fight.

Mesmers have never had their profession mechanic persist after a fight and, in many builds, have no incentive to use it (bar Mind Wrack final burst, Distortion survival, keeping in mind each F skill reduces your overall DPS in most cases).

Mesmer profession mechanic acts like a Burst skill (funny because I’m comparing Mesmers to Warriors and therefore comparing Shatters to Burst skills, hahhh) in the fact that to use them at all is to provide burst, not sustained dps. There’s a reason why shatter isn’t usable in PvE and that’s because it’s not sustained dps. It’s high burst and moderate recharge as opposed to phantasm which is able to maintain the dps with a, roughly equal, moderate recharge charge.

In many, many builds, there’s no incentive to use our shatters, our illusions don’t persist from fight to fight, even if we stay in combat and traverse from group to group fighting nonstop, and we’re effectively not doing anything.

Warriors get a trait that improves damage for each bar of adrenalin not spent.
Mesmers get a trait that improves damage for each illusion alive.

Warriors profession mechanic attack is burst.
Mesmers profession mechanic attack is shatter.

Warriors do not need to do anything to maintain full adrenalin if they don’t use burst.
Mesmers need to constantly respawn and maintain illusions even if they don’t use shatter.

And we can go into further injustices such as Healing Signet, where Warriors get roughly the same HP/Sec as Signet of the Ether with absolutely no conditionals attached whereas Signet of the Ether requires 3 illusions up and pulses slowly, making it harder to maintain the heals.

The example was not meant to be using Warriors and Mesmers though Burst and Shatter are very similar, profession mechanic-wise. It was meant to say that we have Shatters that aren’t being used because they actively hurt our damage output. That’s not healthy (unless you’re doing shatter burst, may you succeed in your endeavors) for how Mesmer works. We’re harming our damage output to improve our damage output, and the costs don’t outweigh the gains.

Eventually, my point will boil down to (if we want to keep Shatter in the game, which we do) Shatter skills should be select-able because as they are, they are very pidgeonholed in their uses (bless your lovely soul, Distortion, I will love you even if we get to pick our shatters).

However, with Fencer’s Finesse, you’ll want to camp Sword moreso than Greatsword.

Reason why Competition is a MUST

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

TN = Translator Note. Anything bolded in the translation are my words.

In due time, we begin to question our motives and reasons behind our actions. One never mindlessly continues to repeat the same daily routines without a motive.
This is why a competitive nature is needed. (TN1)

TN1: I’m not sure how this proves a competitive nature is needed, but okay… (I’m just translating)

A competitive game keeps a game alive because without having all these problems, they can start saving up for content while the player is caught up or addicted in the game. (TN2)

TN2: I think that’s what this means… real line is…

a competitive game can keep the game alive for a while, without a problem, as the game takes advantage of this, they begin to save up for content and other things while a player is caught up or addicted in the game.

From a player that has played from level 1-80 (TN3)

TN3: If that’s your example of experienced in this game, then I must admit, having only 100 hours isn’t really an accomplishment… it also doesn’t give you the right to flounder about on the forums saying that this game is worthless.

At the end of the day, regardless of how much the developers make it competitive or no, there will always be a need to do something in record time and for maximum profit. (TN4)

TN4: You just disproved your entire point here.

From what I see, sPvP doesn’t get any money and always stays the same. (TN5)

TN5: Custom Arena’s and Custom Arena Time don’t get them money?

Besides your standard balance updates, what’s so bad about getting a monthly map? Or new weapons? Or new PvP modes?* (TN6)*

TN6: You mean… like how it’s going right now…? (Except no new game modes.)

This will give them, and yourself motivation to keep playing and beating other teams/players. (TN7)

TN7: No, I don’t think that’s how human behavior works. Just by adding more ways of doing the same content doesn’t make people get more motivation. (See: Smite. People aren’t more motivated to play because there are more modes. There are more modes so it caters to more people. There’s a difference.)

Getting rich for a legendary is cute… and [TN: shiny pretty items] accessories. But like I said, at the end of the day, that’s not going to motivate anyone. (TN8)

TN8: So… a goal… isn’t going to motivate people?

Even if you get all of the Legendaries and [TN: shiny pretty items] accessories, yes yes, I’m sure you can name things to do, but lol like I said, no motivation just meaningless and uninteresting chores with no core value. (TN9)

TN9: This part, I could have translated, but I think kept it vanilla because it portrayed his point… just perfectly… cough.

Final TN/Summary: I really feel like this was an essay. It has an introduction (with a pseudo-thesis statement), followed by 2 body paragraphs and a conclusion. It also lists counter-evidence. I will give you credit for all of that, however, your main points are flawed and your counter-evidence was so strong that it disproved your points. Might want to work on that bit.

Hope this helps people who read this thread!

It’s disappointing when I have to pay attention to the negative space of the ground to figure out if there’s a red circle there instead of just looking at the ground.

Even then, though, the negative space can sometimes still not be a good indicator with the ground below it (and it’s hard to pick the correct sphere since the “bubble” doesn’t give you a good indicator at what it will look like inside).

I’m fine with this Living Story not having Red-Green colorblind support, but please, [texture]artists and the like, keep us in mind. It’s pretty hard to play the game when we can’t see half the things about to hit us.

Temporary content working against GW2 [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Esplen.3940

Esplen.3940

In my personal opinion, which you may disagree with, I believe that Living Story and other temporary content are simply holiday content with no holiday tied to it.

So, with that in mind, if you are to make sure that all temporary content is permanent, why not just have Halloween and Wintersday all year round so that new players don’t miss out on those events, too?

That would be fine, holiday-like fluff content, if it wasn’t in place of real content, like the loads of new Dynamic Events Colin hyped last fall, (touted as doubling or tripling the number of DEs with in a year), which never materialized.

I think the entire Living Story strategy, based on what we’ve seen to date, has been a complete failure and absolute waste of development time. If they couldn’t produce meaningful monthly content, I don’t have much hope that twice monthly content updates will provide anything more than a cotton candy experience.

Well, it’s heading more towards a permanent direction. Bazaar of the Four Winds has a lot of permanent content as opposed to most other Living World/content patches.

To be completely fair, they are listening to their player-base, it’s just most people don’t realize that and just whine all day.

160 (Fractals of the Mists)
80 (Belcher’s Bluff)
110 (Bar Brawl, not attainable)
204 (Keg Brawl)
I’ll throw in Sky Pirates and Dragon Bash since they were a month ago, so…
193 (Sky Pirates)
195 (Dragon Bash)

This gives us, not including dailies/monthlies, 250 + 624 + 400 + 475 + 400 + 82 + 209 + 227 + 500 + 450 + 80 + 891 + 335 + 160 + 80 + 110 + 204 + 193 + 195 = 5,865

Once we add in dailies (1 month of playing = ~30 days = 30 * (9 + 4) + 110 (monthlies) = 500.

That means that he’s gotten ~6,365 Achievement Points (+ ? from sPvP) in one month.

First off, that’s not 7000+ AP.

Secondly, most of this is impossible since it’s quite physically impossible to get some of these achievements in a month (much less getting them in conjunction with all the others in the span of one month).

So please, realize what you’re typing before throwing out random friends. I have a friend who owns 3 planets, 7 stars, and can buy everything on earth without going even 1% into his savings. Does that mean anything to you? It darn well shouldn’t.

EDIT:
And OP deletes his post, lol.

Things to note about Continuum Shift

Definitely agree with the above notes, as with #5 you can’t hit F5, no clones, and activate a 1s cast skill at the same time, as CS ends before it actually activates.

You have to use CS during the cast of the skill. So long as you use CS just before the skill actually goes on cool down it will be affected. So cast Gravity Well, use CS during the wind-up, and tada, refreshed 1s cast skill.

Yes, I think that was established. I was stating this because CS is 1.5s duration with no clones, and Gravity Well for example is 1s yet it cannot be used together except by doing exactly that, that it has to be used right before it finishes casting.

Are you sure you’re not just waiting too long after using CS?

How Many people regularly pug?

As for fractals… things are worse. The problem is it is now very easy to get 45 AR so pugs are full of people going straight from 12 to 38 (god kitten lvl 38…). Some fractals are definitely worse than others though. snowblind, the fire one, and mai are the worst and i’ve had many many parties completely fall apart doing these.

It’s amazing how many people are doing a lvl 38 fractal and have not a kitten clue how to fight mai trin. The shaman boss is a real kitten without any reflects or squishy classes that die the second the eles spawn and the amount of knockdowns in snowblind is just out of control.

I’d agree with all that. Even at 49 people just don’t know how to dodge/strafe the arrows from the fire shaman and that’s as basic as you can get.

I just maintain 100% reflect uptime on him and cry when he kills my Wardens with his swoopity or swoopibomb or swoopitack.

12K+ achievement points? How?

I do my dailies everyday which gives some points but that’s like bringing sand to the desert. ;-)

I have some parts of the game nearly untouched: WvW, PVP and Fractals.
This should give me another 1.000-1.500 points which is still miles away from top.

I think it 12.000 still impossible nowadays!?

Doing every daily for a month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 330 points.
Doing every pvp daily for a month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 120 points.

Together, that’s 450 points.

Doing every monthly in one month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 70 points.
Doing every pvp monthly in one month (30 days) will give you (in the current system), 40 points.

Together, that’s 110 points.

If you do all the dailies and monthlies in one month (30 days) you will get (in the current system) 560 points. Add in Living Story (this month specifically has kitten points) and you end up with 1015 points. The game has been out for 11 months (we’re about to hit month 12) and so, for all the early months where Living Story didn’t appear to give us a huge amount of achievement points, we add in things like Jumping Puzzles, Slayer, Weapon Slayer, Hero, Tradesman, Explorer, Fashion, Community, Hall of Monuments, Bosses, Dungeons, Fractals, and PvP (not including WvW since those achievements don’t give much points for the effort, PvP gives more) then 12000 is actually behind schedule. I think the highest attainable (which nobody can attain since most people missed monthlies/dailies near the beginning) is somewhere a little greater than 13000.

And the law is stretched thin.

Does anyone think about this when you constantly hear it from Ellen?
