I’m starting to wonder, the people that still target “perma-stealth”, are they new to game, new to pvp content, or have seen the multitude of other threads and still want their voices to be heard?

Typical scenario, one of my teammates is fighting someone while the rest are elsewhere, and he gets downed by said enemy. Before enemy can finalize the kill, I come out of nowhere and quickly down the assaulter and finish them off rezzing my teammate. After which a slew of insults comes my way from the would-have-been killer. It doesn’t even need to be me, it could be anyone number of people in that scenario. Let’s kick it up a bit, my teammate isn’t downed yet but clearly losing, then i come in and we both defeat the person. I am all for fighting my own battles myself but if help comes my way then i don’t look down on it. Don’t I have the right to protect my teammates?

I don’t know if I’m the only one who gets this, but sometimes when I’m using mainly the shortbow and am using high amounts of evading, via evading or disabling shot and shadowstepping either by the utility or the arrow, I sometimes find that my character will jut refuse to do any sort of movement action afterward unless I sstep again or sometimes evade, does this happen with anyone else?

my main stealthing comes from the last dagger offhand skill cloak and dagger

Actually I find it depends on who youre fighting really, thieves, then blinding tuft is best since it usually comes down to who stealths longest, guardains, mace head crack locks them from using life saving skills, mesmer is just good all around, elementalist keeps them slow and DRAMATICALLY lengthens CD on their skills and attunements, throw gunk is meh, the warrior steal is cool because if you set them up with your Black Powder, then you can safely use the axe while they are swinging about hitting nothing. The ranger steal is great team support as it heals a bit and cleanses conditions, which in this current meta, is a necessity. The necro fear is good as well, I use it to give me the time needed to finalize a kill on a necro of take that time to strip them out of death shroud

Thief…. why?

The classes that have found it easiest are Mesmer, Warrior, Guardian and Thief. Play it as an Engineer, Necromancer, Ranger and come back.

Wut? Thief is not a walk in the park for her. Her grasping hands hurt way to much for us in phase 1. Oh look we can stealth! WAIT! If you stealth, the clones stop moving, which is what you don’t want since the aoe is still moving and ask any of us players that beat her, phase 1 has a set rhythm you get down, the first three portals and first three clones are usually the ones used to get to phase 2, any mess up, at least on my end and you screw up hard. Miss one of the first three portals and say goodbye, the aoe is no going to drop in an inconvenient spot now. So I reiterate, stealth actually hinders us in phase 1, only time i did it was after I threw the first crystal and when I placed shadow refuge on the third crystal. Thats the only luxury us thieves have, the fact that we can effectively set up on her in between the third crystal throw and the beginning of phase 2 with shadow refuge.
In phase 2, she can actually burst us down with her regular whip attack. This infuriated me. As if the clones aoe and orb wasnt enough, even she herself had more burst potential than most players, only thing I had on my side was a trait that gave me endurance back on evade, signet of agility which refilled my endurance meter, and a trait that cured crippled and weakness on evade every 10 seconds. I found out that i actually had to Cloak and Dagger off of the clones themselves, you know how risky that is with poor mistiming? Let’s not forget the aoe… /rant

Hey to be “that guy” but just because it’s massless doesn’t mean it moves at the speed of light since a very physically limited being still has to swing it, it doesn’t move on its own.

Regardless of whether you were using the gear in PvE or WvW you were using it because it did the most DPS. Guess what, it still does the most DPS.
The only difference….oh noes, now sometimes I might have to throw 1 or 2 more attacks than I used to, to down a person.

For some builds it is more than slight. For example, a hidden killer thief who runs valk armor and zerk trinkets will notice up to a 30% drop in damage. “But power is unaffected!” Builds like a Hidden Killer thief that rely heavily on critical damage might as well consider crit damage their actual damage since the moves you want to crit most should always crit. That being said, the drop is more than 10% easily.

This, you know the saying “The bigger you are the harder you fall?” Yeah it exists for a reason. Fights against PU mesmers with 4 invis (The Prestige, Decoy, Mass invis, Veil) can last really long. Especially if they are using a Staff instead than Sword+Pistol.
Anyway, a few tips:
when they go in stealth, they will probably have Aegis when they reappear: just attack them with your backstab, doesn’t matter if on the back or on the front. They will dodge most likely after the attack, so don’t keep attacking, just use it once. Keep stealthing as they waste all their utilities and go full offensive when they have used Veil+Decoy really close to each other.
It’s the only spec against which I won’t hold my back about stealth, and will spend most of the fight stealthed. I’ll give them some of their own medicine and usually drop a ballista and a /laugh on their corpse.

I can vouch for this, I had a fight with a PU mesmer and it took 15 minutes. Be extremely careful when they are on low health, do NOT get anxious and try to finish them, even mesmers can have tricks up their sleeves. Take your time, you’re not going to kill them fast anyway.

I think my sylvari would make several fancy rugs before she became firewood, not that it’ll ever happen because sylvari are a proud and terrifying race….they just don’t know it yet

Isn’t this why all the Thieves come to the Warrior forum to complain about the one class they can’t out run in land speed? Ironic much?

I would complain too if I was a very fast runner and wore relatively light gear with the powers to teleport and some dude in freaking 100lb armor just darted past me despite my abilities.

i run 10/30/30/0/0 semi glass cannon because im trading some raw power for survivvability. CnD is my best friend and i can effectively harass groups in WvW (though its not recommended for your health, my poor sylvari can’t afford her medical bill sometimes) but its really fun.
EDIT: cloudysan you should check out my build then and see if it works for you. utilities are sos shadref and shad step with dagger strom. armor is valkyrie jewels are zerker runes you can use wurm or scholer i think but i think wurm is better

So I’ve been looking at the forums and it seems people want to know exactly what build it is that the thief has that’s supposedly killing everybody. After a ton of theory crafting I believe I have found it. Can you guys correct me or give any critiques as to what should be changed?

Okay, so this build is 30/30/30/30/30.
For Deadly arts, I believed people were facing thieves using Mug for starters.
Dagger training was also a popular for that extra burst. Also, Improvisation for the increase when wielding a bundle. So for the first tree, we have
DA: III, VII, IX

With me so far? Okay the critical strikes tree needed to be used since, coupled with Deadly Arts, gives insane amounts of burst.
The traits for this one weren’t hard your tree should look something like this:
CS: I, VI, XI however Hidden Killer is a nice alternative

Shadow Arts is essential for the amount of stealth we’ve been doing so once again let’s set this up:
SA: IV, VI, XI for the regen in stealth and condi cleansing as well as blinds. This gives the classic “Left and came back with full health” sch-peel

The Acrobatics tree is arguably just as important kitten since this is how we get hp and also how us stealth thieves simultaneously have a ton of evasions to boot making us near impossible to hit. This took some thinking but I’ve settled on
AC: I,VII,XI I chose I for WvW builds, otherwise power of inertia is preferred. Once again this will give your thief much health and even more condi removal with a bit more evades to boot.

Ah Trickery, the forbidden fruit.
Trickery:V, VII, XII this will give us even more power, reduce our steal and give us even more boon stealing with a daze, regardless of aegis or stability.

Gear: All Zerk until nerf happens then I’ll need to change but all Zerk for now with runes of scholar, though, Lyssa may be better. Traveleres as well and Divinity’s may help with the well rounded-ness

Weapons: You should have DD/DP/SD/SB
I chose four wepaons since we need to be able to use all of our gimmicks in the same fight. DP will allow us to stealth easier and set up more blinds. DD will allow us to burst even better than DP with the addition of CnD, while SD will give us the evades we need to continuously evade if the event comes that we don’t feel like stealthing during the fight anymore. SP can be an alternative if you desire. SB is pretty basic.

Utility: Withdraw works well here but Hide in Shadows is another good one. Im going to go with HiS for now though. Shadow Step, Shadow Refuge, Infiltrator’s signet/blinding powder: pretty basic set up

Elite: Basilisk Venom duh, we always use this. Any thief that doesn’t use this isn’t a thief. But if you are a thief and still don’t use this, use TG or DS depending on the day of the week, I have a chart that follows through with this:
Monday-DS
Tuesday-TG
Wednesday-TG
Thursday-DS
Friday-DS
Saturday-TG
Sunday-N/A

Just because they are verdant doesn’t mean they catch fire any easier than humans do, Anet has said this. Why do you think there are sylvari blacksmiths?

^^^ engineers laugh at thieves so hard. Whether they be condition or even power, the amount of area control they put out can lock down most thief builds easy

Don’t forget that statistically, most of the community plays warriors. That is a fact. Second, you second point, I can somewhat agree with though no entirely. In other words you want the stealth to be applied as soon as the heartseeker is activated, that way is HS connects, revealed will proc. As for your first point I never agree the people that want to nerf this.

The thing is, when you say you’d take survivability over damage, that tells me you only see a backstab build as a glasscannon, which not all are. There is the popular balanced sister builds 10/30/30etc|0/30/30/10 etc that are popular. They offer dmg, AND survivability, just not as much extra dodges.

You guys are missing an even more obvious effect, assuming it pulles out out of stealth, our stealth moves will also be stripped from us. That like, taking away an attack from another class

Not gonna lie that shadow realm visual effect seems really cool, but when your like me who goes into stealth every 3 seconds, your screen going from negative to normal and back will get annoying

For the last time, this isn’t to know if I hit them. Yes that’d be a side effect which I wouldn’t mind either, but this is to know how hard I hit them. I don’t see why this wasn’t implemented in the first place. Say a mesmer cloaks when they are at half health and I backstab the area and then suddenly get re- no let’s use a better example, say a thief is at half health and enters shadow refuge. I then proceed to to BS inside the circle and suddenly get revealed, indicating a hit. At this point three things will happen: I will keep swinging and finally come to the conclusion the thief is down and keep swing at the air that is magically progressing my AA, My AA will cease to progress indicating the thief got away, same as last scenario except the thief doesn’t retreat they retaliate catching me off guard.

Here is how that would change with my suggestion: I see that my BS did 2k damage, a face stab and surely not enough to down the thief as the state they were in. Even if they were at full health that doesn’t help much still. I can then retreat out of thier SR and use my normal tactics to counter an oncoming counter attack if that is what they were planning. Now same scenario, they go into SR I get revealed and I see I did a signature 8k damage. If they were at half or less, that’s a down and I can affirm I am not wasting my time looking for the downed body, granted this won’t happen every single time. Or, even if they were at full health, as a thief, if you get hit for half your hp with one of your crucial utilities on CD, you normally wouldn’t counter attack and risk anything.
In the case of mesmers, it’s basically the same thing except they aren’t known to make large groups of people go around furiously swinging at the air around them looking for the downed person.

Also, it would help those that have aoe’s and help shed the whole, thieves are invincible while in stealth yadda yadda etc etc and so on and so forth.

Okay, after using all elite skills, let me first ask, why D/D? If you want melee i’d suggest D/WH or D/F since an offhand dagger is for conditions. But back to the point, you seem to be power based, so lich form isnt all too bad for you as the #1 skill hits hard for power builds, as well as its other attacks. Plague form is really used for condi builds since it spreads conditions. But my favorite is the flesh golem as it brings something for every build. It will be your melee buddy for close combat fighting, or even if youre a condi necro, he can keep cripples up to kite foes and knock them down giving you more opportunity to deal more damage to your incapacitated foe, from melee attacks or conditions.

I love the thief, hate me if you want but I do. I like the speed, I love the mobility, I love the ability to disappear at will. A lot of fights take much more effort to win on my end than it does for my enemy, so when I win, I love the rewarding feeling. I like being underestimated and I like stealing things….take that last one how you want it.
