Wasn’t Wildstar geared toward hard-cores? Considering how few of them there are overall, why did anyone think that an MMO made mainly for them would be a good idea?

not sure if that is the reason, seeing as eg. Eve has been growing steadily since launch and is very healthy in economic terms. Wildstar felt strangely clunky and was cluttered with a lot of rather unnecessary gating of content. It was also a rather bold move to launch a game today with a subscription only model I guess.

Dueling, where is it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

Dueling has been asked for since the days of GW1, still hasn’t happened. And for good reason.

As this game is also fairly pvp oriented you will always have the buttheads who will want to show off who has the biggest sword (or compensating for a lack of one more rather) by challenging anyone and everyone to a duel, and will harass players who refuse or who lose.

By not adding in duels, they delete this kind of occasional headache and allow the GM’s to attend to more important matters than banning that someone who went too far.

In all fairness – and that coming from someone who really does not see dueling fit in well with the majority of GW2´s playerbase – then Anet should step up and either say dueling will never be a thing in here or it is not off the table in the future. Same with mounts for that matter.

Would You Like 10-Man Raids (Poll)

Telling from past experiences (Marionette, Scarlett & her legendary knight buddies), I very much doubt the majority of GW2 players would be able to play anything that deserves the monicker “raid”, be it old school EQ2 style or content like the GW1 elite areas. Still, when you browse the forum: How often do “casuals” complain about teh evil hardcorez farming chests etc. instead of completing events. That is the downside of open world content where you are not able to pick your team – it is not only a problem for better players who want to do harder content like Marionette, but for everyone who wants to accomplish some goal with likeminded individuals.

would you like PVP in PVE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

I´d love a harsh, unforgiving “EVEish” pvp mmorpg, but GW2 is not the place for it and this century is apparently not the time for it – all such games are so niche it is barely worth checking them out (underpopulated and hence underfinanced). This setting simply does not fit todays players´mindset anymore. I mean, even Garriott is going for flowers and bunnies in Shroud of the Avatar apparently – and that dude started out with one of the harshest MMORPG ever back then. There simply is no market anymore, as much as I may bemoan that, today it is all about everybody is special and instant gratification – pieces of art mirror the society they are created in.

I dislike paying for season 2

AFAIK only GW2 uses this format, so no, you don’t have to check 100+ games (I’m not debating if this is a good or bad format). Also, if you know that a company uses this format, and you think you might coming back to the game sometime in the future, keep an eye on the updates every now and then.
Anet specifically explained the format beforehand (2 weeks free etc).

As for cashing in, again, you can buy it with ingame currency, so your point is not valid (at least, not entirely, I hope you can see it).

The pay once play forever applies to the core game, in the same way that buying D3 doesn’t get you access to the expansion part of the game. again, this has been already stated multiple times, they only thing you’re missing are the LS chapters (which you can play with a friend who has them unlocked) and the achievs. The maps are there for free.

It’s a bold statement to say that it’s the only game to use that format. You’ll have to provide solid evidence for this.

Secondly I did not know they used the format of scamming people. So there is your logic down the kittenter.

It is a cash-in thoguh isn’kitten Unless you have no life and only ever play games all day. Even then, time is money.

D3 has an expansion much like GW2 will have. Expansions usually offer a vast amount of content hence why the sale of them is not a scam.

You don’t play WoW or D3 expecting to buy quests (That’s essentially what Anet is doing with GW2). If you look at the “Buy GW2” and view “What’s in GW2” You will see the mention of living world events which of course fails to mention that they cost money (Of course they do).

It really baffles me why people like to take it up the kitten from companies, you guys remind me facebook-type-game players that defend pay-to-win games. I don’t know whether to cry that people like that exist or laugh my kitten off.

you seem to be rather fond of theorizing about other players´ lifestyle and insulting them. Well, here is some of your own medicine: If your cool adult super fulfilled real life 12 hour shifts don´t bring you enough money to even pay these minimal prices, then maybe you have to work 14 hour shifts, even more real, eh? Or maybe look for some qualified job with a better income. Yours sincerly, an above average earning computer playing person with 8 hour shifts and plenty of pastime activities in his life.

not bad, but not outstanding either. What I rather dislike about LS is how halfheartedly it is implemented. A really bold approach would be having a changing world on a large scale as the story progresses, including the elimination of the personal Zhaitan story as that, in terms of a progressing living world, is done. But I can understand how delivering enough new content to make up for would be an insanely huge drain on ressources.

Yes, they will probably lock guild halls behind the expansion. But that’s not a bad thing, its like…if I buys an ice-cream and you don’t. If you then try to take some of my sprikles/topping I would slap the kitten out of you. So just buy your own ice-cream so we can both enjoy the same thing =)

Yes and then watch those players leave the game. Guild Halls should not be gated, WvW maps definitely won’t be.

products cost money, not so hard a concept. If you are leaving over the few bucks for an expansion, you probably aren´t an interesting customer anyway.

Guild Wars 2 is a #safespace, full of people who think that others engaging in a duel will somehow affect them, or that the feature of dueling will automatically make people more aggressive and hostile (and thus somehow pull into question their manliness / womanliness? I don’t know!). Apparently the concept of being able to auto-refuse duels escapes many players.

We must get these nasty thought of competitive play out of our heads! They are doubleplusungood! Keep these thoughts to the prescribed areas where smokers and gymbros skulk!

(I’m pro-dueling, because I played that other game since release and settling an argument over class dynamics with a good old duel was absolutely perfect. Plus people requesting to duel me never made me feel… hahah, unsafe)

why are you citing 1984 in this frame of reference? Did you actually read the book and not understand anything in there or did you never read it and just pick up the phrase somewhere?

Trademark!! that was the word I looked for. (not a native english speaker) you are right, copyright is smt else!
But still ridiculous IMO

Get used to this madness, it’s only going to get worse. You can trademark almost everything. A German communication company trademarked the color Magenta.

Telekom did not “trademark” magenta. They did so for their general corporate design consisting of said color. You cannot “trademark” colors, at least not in Germany (and I doubt that would work in most places of the world). Even if one of their competitors would chose to use the same color in his design it would be up to a judge to decide whether a sufficient likeness was given or not.

To paraphrase something that has been said already in this thread: It helps a darn lot to know what the heck one is talking about before doing so.

it would be great if GW2 had TERA style combat, but such a thing can not be implemented without rebuilding the whole system from scratch. I always lamented GW2´s weird two-sided approach: You have active dodging and the like, yet you have many, let´s call them “abstract” in lieu of a better word, combat states: protection, stability etc. and auto-hit on attacks. You can see the problem of this strange mix in dungeon encounters or mass pvp. The whole stack and spam problem derives from these abstract combat values.

"Meta" does not mean "Most Effective"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

I know this will sound like nit-picking, but I find all the talk about “meta” this and “meta” that to be kind of bizarre. People seem to be using this word to refer to “the best strategy” or “most powerful build,” which is not at all what the word means.

Outside of these forums, when people talk about something that’s “meta,” it involves context, subtext, reading between the lines, breaking the fourth wall, self-awareness or a work that comments on itself or its own medium.

This can certainly apply to video games — for example, in Metal Gear Solid when the colonel instructs you on how to climb ladders using “the action button,” or when Psycho Mantis psychically “moves” your controller, that could be considered a piece of meta-game dialogue.

“Meta” can also refer to game mechanics and gaining a competitive advantage, as well. But it goes beyond just recognizing good trait combinations and taking the game at face-value. Often it involves taking advantage of the interface in some way, thinking ahead and considering how other players will behave, or using technical aspects of the game’s infrastructure to maximize efficiency. It’s behaviour that — while operating inside the bounds of the rules — may be unintended.

In GW2, some simple examples of “meta-game” might be:

  • Parking an alt in front of a gathering node or chest, just to grab it on server reset
  • Back when “daily revives” was part of the achievement cycle, players would intentionally jump off cliffs and rez each other
  • If you want unidentified dyes, don’t buy them with Laurels. Instead, buy Heavy Crafting Bags, sell the materials, then buy the dyes off the trading post
  • Rather than spending the silver to port to Lion’s Arch, instead enter the PvP zone or WvW, then take the free gate to LA
  • Manipulating the trading post market for profit
  • Using overlays or fan sites that tell you when world bosses will spawn
  • Using an otherwise-unused alt character as a free “bank”
  • Crafting rare greatswords just to sell them, only because so many people want to dump them in the Mystic Forge in hopes of a precursor
  • In-game roleplaying
  • Logging on for a moment just to grab your daily reward chest, then exiting
  • Rapidly burning through Personal Story 1-10 to farm keys

Note that “meta” does not necessarily mean “the best move” or “instant win.” It has less to do with in-game success and more to do with the level on which you’re thinking and interacting. It’s something that happens above or around the game, rather than strictly in it.

Of course this is all subjective, and you’re free to use whatever words you want in your posts. But I cringe whenever I see someone talking about “the current meta” of whatever game mode, when what they really mean is a build that players typically find effective. What it seems to boil down to a lot of the time is just playing smartly, picking traits that harmonize with each other, and using weapons or stats that suit your play style and the content type. That is no more the “meta” of Guild Wars 2 than dressing warmly is the “meta” of winter.

You could say this thread is sort of a “meta” post of this forum. Anyway, thanks for reading. I’m sure most of you will go on as you did before — but I wanted to give my two cents, as we all get to do.

TL;DR: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

For someone apparently interested in philological issues, you display a baffling ignorance of very basic philological concepts, e.g. evolution of language, social context and polysemy.

what if you’re in the army for example? Not everyone will be playing even weekly for years.

and that is why this is the cost of not logging in once for those 2 weeks, because the majority of players can do that, and the few that happen to miss it regardless of the situation, will have to pay

(to anyone, not partcularily you)
200gems an episodes isnt even much, 10bucks gets you half of them,be happy it’s not worse

I was under the assumption (also by reading an early article about Season 2 content) is that you’ll be able to play ANY episode you missed during Season 2… and that GW article failed to say that if you didn’t log on during that time, you would have to pay 200 gems to access it. I don’t know if it was an early early article or what… but it was pretty misleading.

Just going to leave this here.

To unlock an episode and have it added to your Story Journal, you simply need to log into a map with any of your characters during the two-week period that the release is live to be given permanent, free access to the storyline of that episode. Once you’ve unlocked it by simply logging in, you can replay that episode’s storyline on any character on your account as many times as you like from your story Journal forever. Past episodes will be available for purchase for 200 gems. (Don’t forget you can earn gold and purchase gems to unlock the episode for your account).

yes, he is quite dead. For some players. For others, not so much. That is not a matter of reasonable speculation, but a fluke of changing content strategy midway. The game offered traditional static content at launch. When they switched to Living Story, it would have been consistent to remove the whole of Zhaitan story. Unfortunately, that would have left the game with barely any content at all. Maybe they will revisit a dun-dun-dun moment of Zhaitan reemerging during some later Living Story arc, but at the moment, Zhaitan is dead according to GW2 history.

You realise the short dungeon times were designed for those with limited time for a play session?

Many of them are short deliberately.

You speak as if you designed those dungeons yourself. Which one did your team design?

PS: 20min is short. When I had limited my playtime to around 45min, I could definitely finish a dungeon, if not multiple paths in a PuG.

20 minutes is relative.

To me for a dungeon path it’s insanely long.
To you it’s just right or short.

It doesn’t matter. Right now the game allows for both of us to run it in our chosen time-frame and doesn’t force either one of us to take longer or shorter than we want to.

That’s what’s good about GW2.

That aside – dungeons in this game were designed to be short and unpunishing so that casual players can do them with some degree of success.

There’s another factor at hand here – rewards – and the experience lasting longer does not imply the player being better rewarded. Plus – in the current state of the economy dungeon rewards are borderline bad.

Then say it’s “too long for you” in the first place. Less informed people see these things and it paints an expectation that, IMO is unreasonable for an mmo dungeon perspective. It’s already bad enough there is only a mild aftertaste of plot within these dungeons and that choice of actions is only an illusion, but reinforcing the expectation that they should only take 10 min only makes dungeon experiences cheaper for the foreseeable future.

It seems really strange that you do so adamantly ignore the fact that you can “experience” the same content only a very limited amount of times. But I guess that happens when you don´t argue obversations, but follow some ideological agenda – in your case, special treatment of entitlement under the guise of egalitarianism. When the ohhhs and ahhhs fade, yes, of course it becomes a matter of efficiency. Be it zerker wearing speed runner or flower sniffing noob in cleric.

So we’re boiling down to:

player group 1: zerker players who want to play with other zerker players are bad.
player group 2: zerker players who will carry you are better.
player group 3: those who cannot run without being carried.

So the proposal is group 1 and group 3 are the same group?

So the zerkers have no right to reap the benefits of knowing how to use active defences, and high dps builds.

well, I estimate 70 % of all MMORPG forum complaints go like this: other players are able to do something that I am not able to do, so please developers remove or nerf that thing.

so, you dislike how other people play and make a big fuzz out of it, in essence. Good for you.

This "Meta" has to end

why does this “meta” have to end? Why cannot you just wear berzerker gear yourself?

- there is build diversity even with everyone using zerker
- if they change the stats, there will still be a “meta” – a type of gear that is perceived as the best one – and you will still be kicked out of groups by people who think it is important to have
- if you bring in role diversity, then every role will get a “meta”. You will no longer see “zerker required”, but “class x wearing gear y” required. And you will still be kicked from groups if you don´t bring it.

Zerker gear is easily available. Get it. Or create your own groups. Why is your suggested inability to make friends in game the liability of other players which have to take you along in your opinion?

Teragriff - a step in the right direction

“Bosses” in this game divide into TWO breeds – annoying and boring. Sometimes they mix. And yes – Teragriff is a mix.

+1 to this
There are hardly any good bosses in the game, very few, but the opinion is pretty much subjective. I like 3xWurm, Volcanic Fractal last boss’ Imbued Shaman, Teq and mmm nothing come up on my head lol.
Mobs wise, i only enjoy fighting ascalon mobs, mainly because they glow lol.
Everything else just plain sucks risen, dredge, inquest, etc, not to mention silverwaste and dry top crap. I don’t have problem killing them running either condi or zerk. They are just mainly agitating. It doesn’t take much to kill them, but the amount of crap these mobs threw out trying to impress you as if they are a big deal just fail bloody short at annoying, risen and dredge are the biggest culprit.

The problem with good boss designs and mobs in general is really a problem of the combat system. GW2 chose a strange mixture of “twitch” gameplay, like actively moving out of harms way, and abstract concepts like stability, dodge giving invulnerability frames instead of really being an evasion, autohit on tabbed target, defense buffs instead of active blocking. And these things do not mix well. TERA combat is a far bolder step in the mmorpg genre – sadly, they ruined their game with their One Piece motley crew world design, a lack of variety in builds (not talking about FotM builds and optimal builds, but actual choices) and a really dusty quest system.

Why other ppl think GW2 players are bad

well, because, legendary Scarlet knights… huge red circles… 3 seconds to act… mass fail to dodge.

or “living story bosses are too hard!”….

pick another one if you feel like it.
