for the people in the US, who obviously don’t understand what I other mean with insensitive and tactical unwise.

let’s just hypotethically think of it like this:
there was a school shooting again in the US and 150 grade school students died by the hands of some psycho.
A week later you log on to one of your favorite games and there’s a “april fools joke” that makes all the enemy-NPCs in to children and you have to shoot them to complete your quests.

of course it could be long planned but, after it happned it would have been wiser to wait with this prank and don’t do a prank at all or chose to do something else instead.
Of course people die every day, but this isn’t an excuse for stopping to think about other peoples feelings.
I find this joke actually is pretty funny, but I think the timing was pretty bad.

first of all, why do you assume it applies to people in the US? Secondly, not seconding your position does not equal not understanding. I am German and understand what you want, I just happen to disagree.

Back to the topic: Well, what happens here is very different from what you bring up, an enactment of an event is a lot different from “something having to do with planes” in this April´s fool joke. And even if there was such a school shooting simulation. Be offended all you like, I keep it with the Stephen Frye quote earlier in this thread: That does not give you any privelige on other people´s actions and opionions. I don´t care whether you are offended or not. I don´t have to comply to your values and opinions. That in fact is one of the pillars of civilization, my feelings, thoughts and opinions are not to be determined by a collective or some single person.

‘Gay’ to mean ‘homosexual’ is (far and away) the dominant meaning at the moment. It is, more importantly, how a lot of people identify. If you use ‘gay’ to mean ‘bad’, you are being homophobic, because you are equating the two. This is especially true given that that is the exact origin of the gay=bad definition.

It’s the same as using the word ‘Jewish’ to mean ‘greedy, tightfisted’ – as in, “Stop being so Jewish, lend me some money.” It is equally unacceptable.

Your intent in doing so, and your own personal views on LGBT people, are irrelevant. By using ‘gay’ to mean ‘bad,’ you are perpetuating casual homophobia. By defending the usage, knowing that it is offensive…. you reveal a lot about yourself.

Arguing that ‘homosexual’ was not the original meaning of ‘gay’ is also irrelevant, because neither ‘homosexual’ nor ‘cheerful, colorful’ have negative meanings, and there is no possibility of offense.

They word Gay has also been discussed here alot; where I grew up it was still a term that meant ‘happy’. Not Homosexual. But thank you to whoever is responsible for perverting such a nice and innocent word.

I am interested in how you’re going to justify that homosexuality is a “perversion” or in any way mutually exclusive from “nice and innocent.”

There is even a somewhat prominent gay podcaster who said “gay is what I get called in online games” – and no, he did not mean he was bashed as a homosexual.

but…i think the point of this thread is planning (and the lack thereof) for an expansion. It would be be difficult to argue that Anet has planned this well.

Given the progression structure, which is maddeningly vertical then flattens immediately, they had to know the game needs content. Which in itself is frustrating as again the world is already large enough and is lovingly crafted. A shame then that i have no reason to visit these places.

On release dates..it’s fine not to say october 11th or whatever specific day but to not release a schedule of rough dates is a disservice. I honestly have no idea when it’s coming out…next week…6 more months… Is this the way to do things? Goes back to planning…

yeah they have known for some time they would have to make an expansion sooner or later in all that time surely it must have occurred to someone that they where gona need more staff to keep the game going while making said expansion
wouldn’t it have made sense if over the last year Anet had employed alot of part time staff and taught them there jobs to make sure they had a reserve of potential staff for this very moment and could do both
i mean they certainly have the income to to employ these guys after all they have gem sale income and projected profits from the expansion
and no im not genius business man but this just seems common sense to me
and since they don’t seem to have had the foresight to do that them shouldent the now be making efforts to employ more staff in order to meet both demands ?

you are giving yourself too much credit. You are not only not a genius business man, telling by your post you don´t even have a basic understanding of business, IT development and HR.

Because they change the way additions are coming to you instead for free you need to pay for the whole lot you are getting in the future. (It’s basically buy to play x2)

…and we are supposed to be happy about this change to the content delivery method?

…give Anet praise?

How can you almost reiterate the exact point I’m trying to make, state it as fact, but when I express my opinions/concerns about said point, you pretend like what I am saying is invalid and doesn’t make sense?

cool, so you can post overused Picard facepalm memes. Great. Unfortunately, that does not change how you are one of the most oblivious posters I have seen even around here.

Your major misconceptions:

a) expansion: there is no determined definition for things entailed in an expansion. Yes, maybe “they throw a few LS episodes together” – or rather, they withdrew manpower from LS to create the expansion. So what? Who defines this does not qualify as an expansion? You? If they just created the revenant class, a few skills and gave a character slot on top, they could call it an expansion. You know why? Because there is no reliable, generally accepted definition for this word and you are certainly not the one going to define it here. What, other companies do it differently with their games? Well, tough luck you are playing GW2 then instead of those I should say.

b) feeling swindled out of LS episodes: To make it really, really clear for you – Anet does not owe you anything in this regard. They gave you the LS for free. Of cause, not because they like you so much. They did it for business reasons, to keep players interested in playing and meanwhile spending money in the store. They can choose to stop giving you this free content. You are in no way entitled to it. Can you show me a legally binding promise of free, constant LS updates being part of your GW2 purchase? I guess not. You may whine and bawl, but again, you are not entitled to your free LS updates. Anet could design and develop them, then delete them permanently right in front of your misty eyes if they chose to do so.

It doesn’t go with the game and casuals will quit the game. It’s a nice feature but GW2 is not the game to look for if you want a challenge like that, we get babysitted here. If you are trying to make it an event casuals don’t like PvP they prefer peaceful socialism. All the challenging ones either flopped like BDO or have bad features.

Play Eve Online or wait for future games.

Gosh, you are so tough, aren´t you?

First of all, casual vs., hm, let´s call it good or real players (yeah, to your surprise possibly, I am not too fond of that whole casualization of the industry thing myself) has absolutely nothing to do with pvp vs. pve. Personally I think GW2 isn´t a great game because of the casual way they went, but again, pvp vs pve does not matter in this regard.

Then, I love free world, free corpseloot or whatever harsh pvp system there is. In fact, at the moment I am observing Crowfall as a possible “fantasy Eve” or hope Garriott will do a 180 on making pvp a matter of choice in his upcoming project

BUT: Gw2 is not the game for this. It was marketed as one thing, drew in a certain audience, no way should they turn the table on the open world pvp now. You, Mr. oh so tough because I play video games, are in no place to tell people they are in any way inferior to you because they like this kind of game here instead of the pvp game you want.

If anyone would have some justification to tell players off, it is them, telling you to leave, as you clearly walked into a game that was specifically marketed as being “not for you”.

maybe it would, but player vs. player interaction in PvE areas is a big no-no in GW2´s philosophy.

It’s PvE with some limited PvP.

and that is not PvP? in fact, any PvP in the PvE environment would qualify for this definition. Because, well, it is in the PvE environment?

PvE versatility (joke?)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

Well put, with everyone being self-sufficient I don’t ever feel like anyone relies on anyone for anything except “hit that thing.”

your groups arent using:

Reflection
Blind
Protection
Cleanse
Might
Fury
Etc?

Of course, but that doesn’t change the fact that EVERYONE ONLY specializes in damage. That doesn’t add versatility in my opinion. It’s just (necessary) filler between DAMAGES. lol

Actually no they are not specializing only in damage. Simply because you don’t understand it doesn’t make it so. All those above mentioned by Ashen (and there are even more) are essential for an optimal run and none are actually dealing damage.

What would NOT add versatility, is having one character control, one character support, and three dps, where exactly is the versatility there? By allowing everyone to fill multiple roles at the same time you have more versatility overall, not less.

The only thing that is missing, and there is slight problem there, is gear stats. The fact that you can control/support equally well in Berserker gear and with any other type of gear. Gear != Build, your skills and traits define your build, a Warrior using Phalanx Strength plays differently to a Warrior using pure Damage spec, yet they both use Berserker Gear. An Elementalist using Staff plays a lot differently to a D/F Elementalist, although, once again, they both use Berserker gear.

But even then, let’s ask ourselves, do we really want to LIMIT roles to specific gear stats? Do you really want to force someone to change their stats in order to Support or Control properly? Wouldn’t that actually LIMIT versatility and build choice instead of increasing it?

Like I said, though… They are NECESSARY filler between damage. No one is specializing in these things. They just have them in their builds and use them between dealing damage (at opportune times of course). There is a MASSIVE lack in creativity (versatility) in effective builds because they HAVE to include damage, damage, and some damage. Regardless of the damage you deal, those buffs will come with your build. Why not have these DPS players NOT have access to buffs AS MUCH as players who want to play a support role? Everyone is literally doing the same thing, dealing damage, and throwing down your boons and conditions. Everyone has everything ALL THE TIME. That’s what I mean by specialization. Not one build TRULY stands out like doing DPS, and throwing in your conditions and boons when applicable.

so, basically, you do NOT want diverse gameplay, but I doubt you will understand this.

We’ll simply this down to a single element in order to clarify the observation …

Now we all know how three maps are basically trashed (there is actually four, but hey, let’s keep it really simple). Lion’s Arch is kittened with no hope of ever seeing it return to its former glory (not that it was all that glorious to begin with) and with prospects that Scarlet’s wreckage will ever be cleared (it just adds to the historic feel) .. Kessex Hills double wreckage will never be cleared because it’s so much better now than it ever was from the beginning (denote a modicum of sarcasm) ..and Dry Top while it is as it is and it’s the only way we’ve known it ..

I digress, my apologies …

But it does bring us to the point I am stating; Imagine, you the newbie choose to craft a particular item (not that any item you choose to craft actually matters) but you decide your character might benefit with, hmm, let’s say, charged ambrite orichalcum earrings, sure why not …

Oh, but wait, those take charged quartz crystals, eh not a big deal right just go to the home instance and mine a few a day until you can charge them up (since we all know the Zephyrites don’t have anything to celebrate and we’ll never be able to farm there ever again) … Oh what? You don’t have a Quartz node in your home instance? (Where the kitten were you?) That’s right your a new player, silly me … Hmm, what are your options, go to Dry Top and wait and farm a node or three a day (hopefully within the allotted time frame)… Are you sure you really want to craft those charged ambrite orichalcum earrings, really?

I personally feel for these new players who have to make do with their efforts, and I wish them all the fortune in the entire world of Tyria because the only way that they will ever succeed in crafting something that make them feel accomplished is to grind, wait and hope for the chance to do what we take for granted …

…and like I said, it really doesn’t matter about these kitten newbies anyway .. Why should we care if it is more time consuming for them, they weren’t there at the release so let’s make them suffer, right? Do they really deserve that kind of treatment?

that is a pretty silly argument. There is enough variety in items and ways to acquire them. And there certainly will be new event bound items in the future that players joining now can acquire then. Complete miss, sorry. But I have a feeling that this is less about new players really but more about you not getting those ambrite shinies.

Drop System

OK so Im wondering about gw2s dropping system, Ive more than 11K AP, I started playing more than 2 years ago. Now I got my friend to play and he got the drop Lord Taeres’s Shadow (worth 70g on the tp) before he even reached lv 50 with less than 700AP and Ive not gotten a drop worth more than 20-30g on any of my 11 lv 80s, so please, can someone tell me how is this luck system supposed to work?

Based on luck perhaps – which by definition is not fair?

Freedom to reduce listing prices on TP

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

There are currently no ways to circumvent listing fee and transaction fees. Period. If you do arbitrary tests and come to wrong conclusions, that’s not our problem.

On topic:

Both fees, the listing fee of 5% and the transaction fee of 10%, serve a purpose. You not doing reasearch on what can be expected is not the markets fault. The market shifting and you not having sold your product in time is again not the markets fault.

Hi, I was selling a legendary a month ago and placed 200g just to list the item up. I could not sell it however as people has started to list the items at price below me. At this rate I will not be able to sell off my legendary. I want to reduce the price but could not as i need to repay another 200g just to reduce the price. This makes the system looks ridiculous as it penalize people who are selling expensive items.

There is an huge gap between demand price and supply price of the legendary. I understand it is important to have the listing price. But i do hope that Arenanet can allow more freedom in the ability to make price changes in trading posts for expensive items. Additionally, i also hope to set a limit to the prices of listing to reward those who work hard and sell the items to earn some profit. I hope you guys can understand where I am coming from. Thank you very much!

[Original Poster Comment]
I think some of you misunderstood my intention. Note that legendary prices are falling due to the arenanet notice and people are rushing to sell their legendary weapons they have kept.

I did not want to completely remove the listing fees. Instead, i proposed two recommendations as stated above.

Benefit: The purpose of a listing fee is to prevent people from treating the Trading Post like a storage space. This solution does that as well and benefits the sellers for paying ridiculous items. It also stops people from trading from mailbox which might lead to scam.

Away from the game for 1 year. Legendary prices are exactly where they were 1 year ago. Confirming, the sky is not falling.

The listing fee penalizes every one the same since it’s 5% for everybody. The fact that you have to upfront more on an expensive single item has nothing to do with getting penalized more. If someone was to sell 3,000 gold worth of linen cloth they’d have to pay the same amount of listing fee.

The purpose of the listing fee is not only to prevent people using the TP as storage. It’s also to discourage unrealistic pricing and penalize it. The difference bewteen sell and buy orders is very simple. Selling to buy orders you forgo a great part of risk, hence the buyer is willing to pay less.

[Original Poster’s Comment]

Hi firstly, thanks for your comment. I understand the importance of trading fees (as stated in my first post). However, won’t you think it would be better if sellers can adjust their price accordingly to the market’s demand? Tell me what’s the disadvantage if this system is implemented?

The current Trading Post is worked as the lowest seller and highest bidder. Selling at a ridiculous price is not a problem. The problem is what happens if you want to readjust your price to suit the market’s demand? There is little flexibility for this on our current Trading Post system.

We can negotiate the price in the real world, but in trading post, we can only communicate with numbers listed on Trading Post. Readjusting prices without penalization will definitely help the sellers and buyers.

Well, some might argue that there is a price war, but that will be how our current real world economy works. Do you see your government for re-taxing things you’ve sold when you give discounts?

that is not true at all. Depending on the kind of commerce, you cannot. You enter an auction, the auction house sets the rules. You are not negotiating a price with a buyer in this case.

What is the point in transmutation stones?

Point of charges? Putting your look together.. basically end game…cept you are an outfit drone obviosly. Like the stats of that armor piece and not how it looks? Transmute it, colour it like you want and click accept, issue fixed. Dont feel that burning greatsword you got anymore? Simple fix… transmute it to a different skin and done. Other points? Income for a-net, reasonable imo. Not that expensive and you easily can get them via map completion or pvp and even the daily. An ok system and somehow the devs gotta make money. Im totally alright with getting more charges when i get some armor skin i like and wanna use it (or parts of it) on other chars i got… thing is so far i never had to buy any of them and yes.. i do change my looks quite often, new shoulders here, some new gloves there.. you get the idea.

Hi

I understood what charges do (change looks) but I was questioning why they were a necessity. Turns out, they are purely a cash-grab.

This is what happens to the community when certain decisions cause the majority of players to leave the game, you’re left with the so called elite 1% that love to do these kinds of things while they are playing. Harassment is in their twisted psyche and no you’re not alone about it being troublesome.

We tried to warn folks that it would degenerate into this but no one listened. You can see posts about it that I participated in years ago describing this very thing would happen to the community in the end. It started however with kicking certain classes from dungeons and degenerated from there.

Sadly nothing can be done about it at this point without causing more damage I suspect.

I guess when someone has some petty pet peeve, he can integrate just everything into his grand picture.

Concept of Dueling/Party vs Party

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Algreg.3629

What i’m curious, aimed towards the people who don’t want it, is “why” you don’t want it? in what way would it negatively affect the game if it were added?

Like, personally, i probably wouldn’t use the feature and i think it’s a bit silly. but i don’t know why i “wouldn’t” want it added.

(And to be honest, i don’t think it’d take “that” much work to implement. I believe they actually enabled open-world pvp for woodenpotatoes? i’m not sure, i’ve just heard that from others)

Why dont we want it? Its a distraction, we dont want to be spammed with duel invites( Even an autodecline feature wont stop this), We dont want to have to deal with the trolls and other idiots who come with dueling.(Turning whispers off is not an option, and is a stupid response)

I am all for Dueling in certain areas in certain zones around the world. See the bane in the black citadel, the queens pavilion in DA, are two examples. But a full no on dueling everywhere. As are most of the people who are in the middle(like me) in almost every thread that pops up like this, ive counted almost everytime.
This is from the last thread i counted though, and was asking for open world Dueling.
Against. 73
Against, but for dueling if implemented in some way that players didnt have to see it, and or if it was in specific zones. 43
For Dueling, as long as its opt in. 24
For open world PVP. 8
Non specific answers, inculding those “Only against X race” 11

how would a “Block duel invites” button not work?? Lol huh? Your points are invalid. You deal with gold spammers don’t you?

and people dislike dealing with gold spammers… that was a rather bad comparison for your cause.

Players coming from games that have monthly subscriptions need to think about a few financial truths about THIS game:

  1. The Servers do not run for an extended period of time on your $20-$60 original investment. Money MUST be earned by the company on some sort of regular basis (per your monthly subscription in that OTHER game).
  2. Anet has limited methods to earn money to keep the Servers running AND make a profit (despite some players here’s opinions, that IS what a business is designed to do).
  3. After players initial investment, the ONLY method for Anet to make money is gem sales via RL money. Period.
  4. Anet has ALWAYS maintained that in order to actually PLAY the game itself, no additional RL money expenditure would be needed. The fact that you can convert gold to gems makes this 100% true in all cases (argument could be made that STORAGE is the exception, but it is purchased with gems that can be bought via in-game gold).
  5. OPTIONAL content (visual style, changes, etc.) and convenience items need to have the potential to earn money for the company. PERIOD.
  6. Anet has provided FREE content updates up to the point of the HoT expansion (and beyond that expansion). Arguments have been made that the introduction of an expansion (Heart of Thorns) is changing this point (PAYING for content) but it remains to be seen if the “price is right”.
  7. While some argue the (previous FREE) content provided is lacking or sparce or not what players really want, it IS FREE to anyone that purchased the game (some timed log in requirements have been made to unlock certain content).

The game is based on these facts and while you don’t have to like the economic model your choices are to accept it or play something else.

Wow you put way too much effort into this. The OP obviously can’t grasp these types of “complex” issues.

I was just going to say “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money” “Too make money”

I think he can understand that simpler message better.

Fyi – it’s “to make money,”, not “too make money”.

It’s a fair assumption considering WoW is one of the largest MMOs in the market and this is an MMO game.

not really, there are quite a lot of MMO players that never played WoW. And as that feature apparently didn´t exist all the time, chances are even people who used to play WoW have no idea what it is. And even if, you can reach those extra people if you just explain.

Not many people actually care if you reference other MMOs (even WoW), only people with something against it specifically or ex-players seem to make a fuss about it.

absolutely not, just check any gaming forum and see the torches and pitchforks raised when that reference comes up. You may want to try a forum search just here.

Poll: Unlimited Transmutation Stone

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

why shouldnt it exist?

Because it makes for a terrible cosmetic system in a game that’s supposed to place a heavy emphasis on cosmetics. Switching armor and weapons skins should be free. What we should be paying gems for are a) new skins, and b) additional skin set slots that would allow us to save multiple sets of skins as swappable “outfits”. And no, this would not result in less money for ArenaNet, it would result in more, because people see more value in a permanent purchase. Basing an appearance-altering system around a consumable cash shop resource is counterproductive, because it actually discourages people who like to change their appearance a lot from spending. I barely touch trans charge purchases and I’ve only every bought one skin because I know I’m going to have to shell out more in order to swap them out with others. If it was unlimited, I’d buy every skin that hits the shop, even if I may never use it, just to increase my options. This is the way costuming types tend to think.

You don’t make money off of us by charging us to change clothes, you make money by increasing our clothing options. We’re fine with paying for new clothes and more wardrobe space, but tell us we have to pump quarters into the dressing room every time we want to use it, and we’ll go elsewhere, and never buy clothes to begin with. Other games with cosmetic clothing systems, like LoTRO, Champions, The Secret World, and DC Universe, figured this out just fine. GW2 needs to as well.

but they charge for both and only they know if it works – but chances are, people buy enough of both. What you prefer does not define “should”.

well, I see no reason to bash OP here. In general, it is not such a silly idea to set those items more apart from the usual gear. But there really is a misunderstanding regarding how items, skills and classes are tied together in this game on his part.

Thank you TheBlackLeech. You expressed my concerns about the expansion after they said we’ve seen all of what they plan to release.

During the Living Story, we were assured by the white knights (yes, that is what they are because there’s been nothing but personal attacks on TheBlackLeech in this thread from them) that Anet was busy working on a big unreleased project. Now we see that that project is an expansion with the same amount of content we’ve gotten in the LS over a year. And it seems that they are taking longer to develop it. So I can understand how people are disappointed. What they will be getting is LS3 all at once (which is what some people want anyway, so not everyone will be unhappy), and not what most would consider a true expansion.

Like phys, I will probably make my final assessment based on how much they will charge us for this “expansion.”

hey hey hey, leave me out of the GW2 fanclub! Still I can attack him personally, I just dislike negative hyperbole and premature whining over things not really understood way more than I dislike GW2.

just for a comparison let’s have a look at the 3.0 expansion in Rift

and it was totally for FREE

and now look at the amount of content of HoT with the knowledge that it will be NOT for FREE

so…seriously…why do ppl even have to pay for this HoT when other companies can do bigger expansions for free?

well, people don´t have to pay for HoT at all. But many will not be caring what another game does. And some will sulk and claim how Rift is relevant here and still buy it. A few may even not buy it. So, how is Rift relevant here?

Revenant vs Ranger

What you fail to understand is that the game is in a really early stage. They can change the wall to be a big ol bomb in front of you. Be patient and see what it will be on release. Devs will most likely test rangers vs revenants and do something about it.

well, in all fairness, it still does not make sense to start with abilities that are clearly past breaking point at first sight. If R. is really as powerful as several beta testers claim, then it should have been realized by Anet themselves. When you want to build a hut, you don´t start out with a palace because you can chip away structure later anyway.

Continued World Boss Issues

I mean, not that I disagree with you on all the things you mentioned, but how are those bosses “not functioning correctly”? From what I get, you want them to behave differently to offer more challenge. That is a completely different thing.

But that is what every expansion ever is.
It is just a bunch of releases put together and given a price tag. Why is it suddenly such a surprise? .

Nobody said anything about a surprise.

It is just too little too late.

If they gave us a paid expansion on top of a continued Living World it would have been met with the highest praise.

Stopping the Living World to save up content and then delivering said content in the form of an expansion is not what anyone asked for.

Back to the silly hamburger anaolgy….
If you stop feeding a hungry person he starves to death…. even if he will get an entire meal somewhere down the line.

Keeping a hungry person alive with small bites of food then giving him a meal once in a while is what players have been asking for…. and it is clearly not what we are going to get.

well, I am very certainly not known to be a white knight around here. That being said, your argument is completely flawed.

a) you absolutely do not understand what that beta test has been.
b) you act like you are in any way entitled to free living story updates. Which you are not. It was Anet´s choice to expand their content that way. Whether they really withheld updates to create an expansion or not, you were not swindled out of anything.

Sigh, sometimes I wonder why people who actually seem to play the game show a greater, more general and completely unfounded dislike of it than me who does not play it out of general dislike.

No Dungeons No Cash

Well, if you think new dungeons should be implemented, then give reasons. In this regard, it does not give your opinion any weight whether you spent 5 bucks on the game or 20.000. Not to mention even though your 1.000 bucks sound much, they probably do not pay one week worth in developer wages.

edit: not that I am saying I do not agree with you, but your argument basically is limited to “I am important, that is reason enough for Anet to do so”.

Storyline missions are painful

I am glad to see posts like this saying the game is too hard. Although i do realize there needs to be hard content for the hardcore gamers i do believe some parts of the story including the living story needs to be toned down a bit for casuals. Anet needs to realize not everyone can get high end equipment with real money or spend hours to grind the money.

I am actually worried a bit about how the expansion will be. If there are more hard content like we’ve seen with the living story it might be better off for the casuals to quit playing the game.

That is a ridiculous claim, you neither need to invest money nor grind for it, you outlevel gear too fast anyway in this game and bother only at 80. The problem is not casual vs. hardcore. No player needs to be “hardcore” in this game. People complaining that the game is too hard for “normal” players, claiming the game should not cater to the “elite” only, are under the misperception of being normal players, but usually they are very bad players. A game cannot cater to the 5 % percent most unskilled of the unskilled or it will be completely uninteresting for everyone else. Which GW2 almost is, so even lowering the bar seems to be a bad idea.

yes, it is. So what? I dislike paying for drinks in a bar. A shame that won´t change their policies.

scarcity is a proven working psychological device in sales. I can assure you they make a good buck from this. If such little expenses are draining your ressources that heavily, you are not an interesting customer anyway (no offense, but that is just the way things are).

After launch, Anet quickly realized MMORPG need things to keep players occupied. This is not criticising them (well, maybe they shouldn´t have been so loud about the no grind fad before), it just seems to be the nature of the beast. In all fairness, it is a really tame long term project for a player compared to some other games.

we are just hearing one side of the story, and the only thing relevant there is how you “can play since beta” and still be a rather bad player without much insight into the game.

How did beta attendees get chosen?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Algreg.3629

Do note that it has been said that this initial invite is for a smaller group. They will send more later on. As far as selection goes, it is possible that ArenaNet prioritized players who were in prior closed beta or even earlier tests as well as those who provided really good feedback in the open betas. Another possibility is the amount of gems people bought with actual money, but don’t quote me on that.

that´s good tinfoil material right there. But Beta testing is not a reward, it is a necessity and a chore. To actually get useful results, you need to randomize a larger group or specifically invite people with a plethora of different computer specs. I doubt they have the data for latter, so random it is. Any favoritism would bite them in the ankle later when implementing a working live system.

Personal story used to be a very, very easy endeavour, one might say “snorefest”, where you should run into the semblance of difficulty in about 2 quests. But that was before the atrocious NPE thing. Maybe Anet really messed up the character vs. quest balance there. If that isn´t the case, there is absolutely no reason to complain about PS difficulty.
