Defining Terms

you are at least wrong on the elitism, even though it is almost always used incorrectly around here and in mmorpg forums in general. Elitism is a mindset or a system that calls for special rights, favors etc. based on the sole reason someone belongs to a certain social group. People that get called elitists around here are usually not matching that definition. In fact, it is usually people who call for equal treatment of everyone, like demanding a certain gear set, a certain build of EVERYONE who wants to get into a dungeon group. Special treatment is usually demanded from the other end of the spectrum, people who don´t bother honing their abilities, acquiring the gear etc. and showing a sense of entitlement to still get accepted even though they don´t qualify for the limits so called “elitists” set for themselves.

I was really hoping GW2 was going to be the first MMO to have centaurs as a playable race, but unless it happens within the next year or so, that honor is going to go to Crowfall, which I unfortunately won’t be playing (even though it looks awesome), because it’s going to run on the same scam of a monetary system as Wildstar.

is that a scam that basically consists of paying money for the use of software services? Yeah, diabolical…

Also all of the arguments against in above posts make it look like only 10 year old sissies play this game.

And next you will call us carebears and tell us to play Hello Kitty i assume.

Sorry but this game is not AION and i thing most people here also don’t want it
to be another AION.

there is no carbear category in a game where death and losing in pvp are completely meaningless and without consequences. Let us reserve that for real pvp games like Eve.

Dueling doesn’t disrupt their peace of mind. Harassment does, you can report that. Are you or anyone else against gold because beggars disrupt their peace of mind? If not, then you understand that dueling doesn’t disrupt the peace of mind.

I don’t care if you favor duels. I want to choose wherever I want to duel so that no one else disrupts me from dueling. I want to duel while waiting for a world boss/spvp queue. I want to duel for fun. If you don’t need that, then don’t duel.

Well, I don´t care if you don´t care, I could not care less about either way personally, as I don´t have a problem with pvp in general/love it, have no problems dealing with annyoing players in games accordingly and most of all, I don´t even play GW2 :P (what am I doing here? Well, I like to muck about here, as I learned reading the forum of a game you actually play will taint that game for you because of all the “casual” whining and entitlement threads usually – so better to amuse myself in an environment I really don´t care about).

But yet again, all you bring up is “because I want”, “because I want”, “because I want”. How are 1vs1 spvp sessions interrupted by third parties anyway?

As for your pet argument of “harrassing happens either way”: There already being harrasment/annoyances does not make giving more reasons and opportunites for harassing/annoying irrelevant. Things can become more annoying even if they are annoying already.

Dueling needs to be open anywhere and anytime. Period.

All anti-dueling argument I’ve seen over many threads is dumb including the one Lishtenbird.2814 made. I groan whenever he repost it because he is biased against dueling.

Well, if you want to bring up summarizations of the past, in all fairness, the only thing you ever brought up why “dueling needs to be open anywhere and anytime. Period.” is because you like it to be. You are alway keen to brush aside counter-arguments, but I have never ever seen you actually giving a reason for it beside your personal liking. And you repeat yourself as much as your antagonist here.

No, because it takes too long to type arguments and usually people just ignore them. I have to retype them because search function sucks.

GW2 is not that other game. Dueling in GW2 is like that eternal fight between a whale and an elephant,

And people enjoy that. If you don’t, then don’t duel.

GW2 was designed with class synergy in mind: different classes with different damage, control and utility skills, combo fields, AoE sharing (and stripping) boons and conditions. That’s why PvP has the 5v5 structure, and the objective is to hold points, and not kill each other.

GW2 is also designed to be soloable too. Which is why there are selfish skills and personal storyline that can be completed alone. It is also why AoE sharing is not targetable so that you don’t need to select other people.

Since dueling is not a supported game mode, it is natural that the available method to duel (custom arena) has inconveniences.

This is a reason why dueling needs support because it has inconveniences such as griefing.

Your gear stats will be normalized, as the design behind GW2 says that sports-like competition is about skills and not credit cards.

groan Next, you will tell me that WvW is pay2win.

No matter how you hide it through options, people will always find a way to annoy you in say chat, map chat and even whispers (like they do in WvW). The best way to prevent this is not to have dueling at all.

No matter how you hide it through options, people will always find a way to annoy you in say chat, map chat, and even whisper. The best way to prevent this is not to have gold at all.

Dueling would cause either a class balance disaster or a community disaster. There are already more than enough community complaints about mesmers and thiefs which caused them to be nerfed so hard because of PvP that playing in PvE became meh, and making it even worse because of a game mode which wasn’t designed to exist in the first place would feel wrong for players maining these classes.

No matter how much you are against dueling, sPvP balance will always affect PvE balance.

People who duel have a negative attitude towards everyone else. We do not want to see dueling in a PvE environment as it will bring uneasiness and unsafety, which contradicts the philosophy of GW2’s PvE.

People who beg have a negative attitude towards everyone else. We do not want to see people begging for gold in a PvE environment as it will bring uneasiness and unsafety, which contradicts the philosophy of GW2’s PvE.

Bam. Anti-duelist argument made dumb instantly.

oh, I am not saying you are always wrong in argueing against duel-dislikers, but yet again, the only thing you bring up FOR it here is because some people like it. Some people like 1000 gold transfered to them when starting the game or a fully crafted legendary. And some people dislike both. All those things are not qualified reasons in themselves.

There is a big difference, dueling doesn’t hurt anybody. The other disrupts the economy.

well, according to some, it disrupts their peace of mind. Yet again, you refute, but still I am not seeing anything in favor of duels.

If there needs to be dueling mode, then it has to be purely for fun w/o any rewards or competition tied to it.

Dueling is simply not the mode Anet balance things around. It will also be almost impossible to balance all the 1v1 builds. If it ever became a competitive game mode, you will see tons of complaints on certain imbalanced builds.

and this is just wrong. Yes, there can never be a 100% perfect balance, but that is a thing every good game designer should make an effort to approximate. It is a lazy excuse I certainly did not hear from Anet of the GW1 era, a game that was much harder to balance because of the countless skills and choices. Did they succeed in reaching the ideal? No. But they were constantly working in approaching it. Anet of 2015 does no such thing. Because, you know, “the game is not balanced around single characters”. Well, too bad players actually play single characters.

nah, I don´t think so – as opposed to the I duelz u-kids, OP actually put some thought into it, his idea of dueling would actually add something meaningful to the game, as opposed to dudes spamming people with “lolz, coward noob” stuff randomly on pve maps.

Regardless, any kind of dueling is a slippery slope.

There are tons of problems, starting with the toxic PvP community (which has been dumped into a single zoo cage for now) and ending with class balance whining where it should’ve never existed (my guild used to hold a PvP tournament and youknowwhat? they banned skills like Moa, traits like PU and certain sets of gear!)

So no, thank you.

The toxic PvP community – which is quite a ridiculous generalization, and that is coming from someone being against open world dueling in GW2 – is among themselves in that case.

The balancing whining – I am not so sure this is actualy a bad thing. Whenever class balance is brought up in the current game, it always comes down to “the game is balanced around 5v5” or something like that. Which quite frankly is hogwash. It is a lazy excuse for developers being unable to bring in proper class balance, which is not in the slightest limited to pvp. Do I think current Anet could pull this off though? Certainly not.

What your guild did is your and their thing, different modes can have different rules, I don´t see why you should not have fights eg. in different gear quality beside the standardized spvp rules, people agree to those rules when entering a mode of pvp.

The absence of the anti-duel posts here makes me think that veterans have simply left the forum (and the game) since there’s completely nothing to do there. Here’s my summary of the previous 999999 threads on dueling:

2. DUELING

[~] Threads for reference:

[+] Arguments in favour:

  • That other game has it; we’ve seen it done there and enjoyed it.
  • Dueling is for fun, not for leaderboards.
  • Dueling is a great way to pass time, while waiting either for a queue or other things.
  • Dueling is a way to get to know someone, without them even speaking.
  • Dueling allows players to get to know themselves, as well as their builds.
  • Custom arenas are unintuitive and cost money.
  • We want our gear to matter in duels because we worked for it.
  • To deal with duel harassment, make duels voluntary, give an option to hide/ignore duel requests.

[-] Arguments against:

  • GW2 is not that other game. Dueling in GW2 is like that eternal fight between a whale and an elephant, because GW2 was designed with class synergy in mind: different classes with different damage, control and utility skills, combo fields, AoE sharing (and stripping) boons and conditions. That’s why PvP has the 5v5 structure, and the objective is to hold points, and not kill each other.
  • Since dueling is not a supported game mode, it is natural that the available method to duel (custom arena) has inconveniences.
  • Your gear stats will be normalized, as the design behind GW2 says that sports-like competition is about skills and not credit cards.
  • No matter how you hide it through options, people will always find a way to annoy you in say chat, map chat and even whispers (like they do in WvW). The best way to prevent this is not to have dueling at all.
  • Dueling would cause either a class balance disaster or a community disaster. There are already more than enough community complaints about mesmers and thiefs which caused them to be nerfed so hard because of PvP that playing in PvE became meh, and making it even worse because of a game mode which wasn’t designed to exist in the first place would feel wrong for players maining these classes.
  • People who duel have a negative attitude towards everyone else. We do not want to see dueling in a PvE environment as it will bring uneasiness and unsafety, which contradicts the philosophy of GW2’s PvE.

[=] Current state of affairs:

  • “Dueling” threads are often met with negativity, both because this is a sensitive topic and because it has been discussed countless times. Still, new “dueling” threads appear every now and then, showing that there are players who are actively wanting to discuss the addition of dueling.

nah, I don´t think so – as opposed to the I duelz u-kids, OP actually put some thought into it, his idea of dueling would actually add something meaningful to the game, as opposed to dudes spamming people with “lolz, coward noob” stuff randomly on pve maps.

Like mmorpg never have been RNG heavy… do you have any experience in the genre or is that diablo reference just something you throw in there to give your point more meaning despite having no idea what you are talking about?

You say you don´t want to submit to the RNG gods for your ascended gear – check.
You say you don´t want to take the route that guarantees you success in acquiring that gear (because you don´t like the “feel” of wearing crafted stuff… yeah, right, I wonder how that feels) – check

I doubt your problem is the crafting, seems more like you want BiS gear handed to you without much effort. Then say it and don´t make up such Mickey Mouse arguments.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

You are an unlucky one. Every map I get on is a normal do the events, not seen a chests farm map in ages.

On my maps there are no chest farmers, but i also never see people doing events.
Only when the map is at 90%+ suddenly they all appear out of nowhere.

Problem are not the chests but the whole shuttle mechanisms.

Yesterday was great, people helped out and stayed for 2 to 3+ vine wraths. Then today it went back to normal. Jump to a complete map, do breach and vine and leave.

I would think with people actually wanting to try to get a portal, they’d actually kill things and progress faster. But I guess I’m expecting too much from this community sometimes.

I don´t know if you are using morality as a vehicle for your cause or whether you are actually very clueless in general. Either way, it is hogwash in both cases. This is not a matter of ethos. It is solely a clash of personal interests. There are people who want to farm and there is you who wants to finish events. People farming are not even going out of their way to hinder you. They are just not interested in things you are interested in. Finishing events is not ethically superior to farming. Apparently, your party of interest is in the minority. Period. You can expect of the community whatever you like, you are not the boss of other players. If that throws you into a little temper tandrum, play a single player game.

I don´t know why you should pay for it, that is really a thing you have to decide for yourself. But you have to pay for it. Why? Because it is like that.

If you logged in week after week during the LS releases, anet let you have it for free because they figure you are probably spending money on gems for other things at one point or another (i.e. they are already getting money from you.) If you play in spurts, skipping several months at a time, you are probably not and thus charging a small amount of new content since your last login helps them still get revenue from you, which helps to fund future new content and keep the game up and running.

Smart business practice if you ask me. (and I fall in the later category, having paid to unlock probably about 75% of LS season 2)

it is indeed. Shortening that to the affirmation of an absolute status quo on my part just serves better in tantalizing the “things should be the way I like them…”-crowd :P

After almost 3 years of the same dungeons, do you blame them for wanting it to be as fast and efficient as possible?
They are doing it to farm.
Not for fun.
It stops being fun when you do it daily.

However you perceive it, try to look at it objectively.

You’re asking me to look at it subjectively, actually, but to look at it from your perspective. That’s fine, but don’t confuse “See it from my PoV” with “objective”. People are misusing that word to the point where it’s becoming the new “literally”.

No, I don’t blame them, either, where you getting that from? I just think they should have a separate LFG (I mean, I go in those groups sometimes, too).

No.

After almost 3 years of the same dungeons – fact
farming – most efficiently done fast, zerker supposedly the one gear supporting fast runs – fact
Not for fun -fact.
It stops being fun when you do it daily – possibly debatable, but repetitive actions heavily lean that way

every complex mmorpg has only a semblance of diversity in character building as there will always be builds outperforming others. Some people come up with optimal builds themselves, others copy them from the net. Some people explore really strange offbeat builds that turn out to be successful for them. In a game where you can change builds on the fly you can even adapt to situations at hand. This here, this here is probably an act of dumbing down, making character building as easy as possible, everyone has to be a winner, regardless of how willing a player is to spend time on thinking or/and researching. This game finally has become a disgrace to the name Guild Wars.

New Party Kicking Mechanic is Unfair!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

What I can’t understand is when I open an instance and start a party/LFG alone or with 1 friend, I have totally 0 control over my own party. This is lack of common sense during designing process.

I don’t really see how this is any different than say…WoW’s dungeon LFG tool. You have 0 control over the people you end up that way too. At best you know you’ll have a tank, a healer, and 3 dps. (Unless they’ve changed something since I last played, which was some time ago).

If you want complete control over your party, then I would think that you would be building your team with trusted friends and guild members. Not pugging via the LFG.

I would agree with your point if only I could make requirements on LFG, so random ppl not matching my req can’t join. But because we don’t have this option, kicks are only way to solve issues in parties. This is dumb.

Lol, like you have any control over it in other games. Cmon now. Even in WoW someone can select ‘tank’ when they aren’t really. I ran into that a few times death knights (which, I’m aware can be good tanks when set up properly).

Even in GW1 you couldn’t guarantee the person that joined your group would match the reqs you post in the lfg. Hell, if they pinged the exact bar and such you wanted, didn’t mean they didn’t swap it out after (something we see here in GW2 as well).

If you want to guarantee that the person you’re running with is exactly what you desire, then you shouldn’t be pugging. Pugging is a mixed bag and we all know it.

So you’re claming that game x and game y have bad implementations in their system so GW2 is entitled to bad design decisions?

Actually I stopped puging at all. PUG community in this game developed no respect and no skill attitude for 3 years now. However, I understand the case OP is stating and I fully support people voicing their need to make party system better.

The case is, we will never hear anything from Anet about this until one day they will announce a random change. Or not.

no, he is telling you that there have been many attemtps to come up with a working system and they all had their shortcomings. Pretty clear when you are more interested in like, reading a post, than in antagonizing…

the most important question in my opinion hasn´t been answered in any of these threads: Why exactly?

Where did all the players go?

Are you implying ESO failed because of too many anthropomorphic races? I pretty much doubt this in that case.

As for the dragons. Do you have some magical glass orb or something? There is no ice great dragon in the actual game yet, and the sea dragon is only a vague rumor even in game. And why do you even suspect they somehow have to be aligned to clearly delimited alchemical elements when clearly this does not really fit well for the dragons already known? Even though that wiki link you posted yourself clearly shows the arbitrariness of their influence spheres. Questions, questions….

Charr Lore-play as opposed to Role-play

I love to roleplay, but not the kind of hardcore "/em looks at NPC1 with lust in his heart and asks, “Can you polish my spear, love?”

I’m sorry to say that this is a pretty ignorant view of roleplayers.

not really, in MMORPG, most rpg happens on the level of a Twilight novel, on a good day. Fun roleplaying happens at tabletop where your characters´ environment interacts with you in form of the gamemaster, your actions, ideas and acting make the story. Most MMORPG roleplay has all the makings of a very sad pretend tea party usually.

Renown hearts.

Ya, i think ill stick to WvW and level that way. I love the main campaign.

that will leave you with a level 80 character without any access to areas for events you want to partake later. Exploring then will only net you skillpoints on the xp side, earlier, levels.

lets talk healing power and roles

I’m pretty much afk auto attacking Grenth while piles of corpse lies around me.

I’m pretty sure healing power/toughness/vitality really boost your survivability.

The problem is speed run is pretty much the standard today. If you can’t clear the dungeon in full berserker max dps build, you get frowned on.

So many people complain about “those zerker elitists in dungeons” I wonder why can’t you play with each other and avoid those so called speed runners?

we usually do – that doesn’t mean I wasn’t told off by random people for not being the almighty meta

doesn´t mean they are wrong though either.

Leveling is so dry

I know WoW got the dreadful casual treatment real good, but I doubt reaching GW2 max leveling still does even closely resemble the time there. And what do you mean “you try to complete hearts”? How is there a possibility of failure? All in all, you must be doing something very, very wrong, though I don´t know what that is. Being accustomed to more traditional MMORPG leveling, this here should be a breeze for you.

PS: Which doesn´t mean leveling does not feel stale, the whole game does (though that is of cause a matter of personal taste and preferences), but it is certainly not slow.

if you want to be a casual player in an MMORPG, more or less clueless about builds and game mechanics, that is fine. But you are not entitled to be a liability to players who approach such games differently. You gotta love those casual hierophants applying their “play how you want to” motto only to their precious peer group, but denying that for better players.

Crafting & asc gear too expensive for newbs?

yes. As BiS should be and are in most games of the genre.

GW2 was made to be different, so I don’t see a reason to copy paste from others really. If you think about it, gear adds nothing to the game except progressing, and when Anet releases masteries there will be no need to progress through gear imo.

Imagine if the whole game worked like in spvp, where everyone do play on the same gear-level from start. People would then focus more on the competitive side in both WvW and PvE, instead of grinding for gear that wouldn’t matter in the end anyway. People would have fun from the beginning instead of having fun as a distant goal. Masteries would provide everything that gear is said to do today, and people could try new maxed-out builds every day, without having to grind for gear or spend money on stats.

And while Anet is at it, please remove consumable food buffs. Having to pay money every half/hour to max your character out is not only demotivating, but it encourages you to always rush through everything you do just to make value from the food spent. If the conservative forces cannot resist, then atleast make foodbuffs into an unlimited tonic that can be crafted and sold for a reasonable price depending on quality. Rather invest once and have it forever than pop another one every half/hour.

it is part of an MMORPG. It is a game you will play infinitely in theory, but there is only a finite speed at which content can be delivered. So you cannot just have players “play through”. If you want a pvp arena game, play one. Frankly, I dislike GW2, but all MMORPG I ever came across, even those I consider good, are not great games as games, if that makes any sense. What makes them enjoyable is getting attached to your character and see him grow. If it came down only to pvp experience, story etc. I would always choose another type of game over MMORPG.

I disagree. Considering GW2´s average player skill, it is really challenging to manage any encounter with people not able to notice HUGE red circles. Marionette, Legendary Scarlett Knights, managing kill time in Scarlett plattform battle, you name it.

I am soo upset..I worked for over a year to get the slayer title and finally finished with the Giant. No title for me!! Come to find out, sometime (recent;y) ANET added more slayer kills to the list. I have often wondered why players quit playing GW2 now I’m a little more understanding…

sorry just had to let off some steam……………..

well, I heavily doubt that you are, but if you´ll do, you´ll probably be the only one quitting over something as insignificant as this.

Will Zerker be meta for Revenant? (PvE)

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

This would only apply to those who are dungeon fanatics. It looks like a lot of the rewards from HoT will be in the jungle itself and is designed to break out of the general zerg mentality as well. Right now, zerker rules both dungeons and other PvE. The optimism is that after HoT, you might at least break it out to have a dungeon meta and PvE meta different (and if conditions are really worked well, that could even become more effective or as effective in dungeons as well. It is all a matter of DPS).

The meta applies only to those dungeon fanatics. The so-called zerker meta exists only in dungeons and only those who run it to farm money are under its benevolent effect. Everyone else plays whatever they want.

indeed, well or badly.

they will never do this and they shouldn’t and there is 1 for simple explanation bots

auto loot will make bot farming ridiculously easy

yes, because people able to programm bots are completely over their heads when it comes to inserting “activate area-loot key every 0,y seconds” into their codes.

true but why make it easier for them?

that will probably save them 10 seconds of their lives, you really think that is important enough to even consider it when pondering this feature???

Well, relevant areas are not part of the game yet. But in a fantasy world like this, I am not sure ethnic diversity of a single species is really that important anyway, who cares about colour of skin when that dude at the other end of the bar has a kitten horned lion´s head?

Too many frog-people

Hylek and variations are already part of the world while the things you bring up are unheard of in GW lore, so where have they been till now?

Frogs are not boring, they are apparently boring for you. That is a matter of personal taste and opinion. I could argue insect based races have been overused a lot in computer games. There is nothing inherently boring in “frogs”, it completely depends on how Anet makes them interesting. Do I have any faith in their writing? Not a lot, but that is a completely different story…
