Personally I hate the idea of encouraging people to not learn English and continue to only be able to communicate in their own language, it feels like you would help them keep shooting themselves in the foot.

I agree with you OP wholeheartedly, but let´s face it. We are dinosaurs. What you describe is not only the reality of GW2, but the reality and future of the whole industry. Especially western civilization has degenerated in the last two decades to a point where achievements and achievers are already carrying a stigma. Mediocrity and “inclusion” is our religion now. That is the market the industry has to operate in, so don´t hold your breath hoping for better games in the future.

Can we stop with this learn English talk please no everyone wants to learn it they are happy speaking in their native language they have a right to complain that the language they speak is not translated and all this “Learn English or don’t play the game” talk is kind of offensive I may speak good English but that is because I was never allowed to learn my native language. Learning English was not my choice I would rather speak Gaelic but I can’t so I can see where this person and many other people are coming from when they are unhappy that they can’t play the game because their language is not supported so accept people don’t want to learn English and stop this you need to learn English talk.

there is no “right to complain” here. He can bemoan the fact there is no italian version, but he agreed on a purchase of a product with certain properties. Italian language was not included in these properties. That is unfortunate for OP, but does not give him any “rights”. This is not a question of ethics.

As for that that “learn english” thing: It has been explained here and in various similar threads why there is no italian version. If there was good money to be made, Anet would create one. Apparently there isn´t and very probably there never will be. So that in fact leaves OP with three choices: a) learn English b) play a game without understanding the story and various other aspects c) leave the game. Bawling like a child will not change those options.

Ok I definitely see it but it was someone younger. Like mid-20s age. Maybe I’ll just remember later.

Always my favorite response. “Hey guys this thing is hard” —“no it isn’t, it’s easy.” Thanks for the helpful responses. I am also finding this vista impossible. Even after watching a you tube clip of it and trying for 20 minutes, I just gave up.

people gave hints how to do it. And when people claim they did it and found it easy, that is just at least as good a claim as people claiming it to be impossible. Perhaps it really is easy and you are really a bad player? That is always a possibility to consider as opposed to blaming the game.

@ Bunji .. Thanks, but I must say one thing. First of all, As most (or rather, some) people I’m pretty intelligent, especially if I put a lot of focus on something. (This is not an insult or anything)
I say this because I want you to know that these things you’re telling me are generally things which I have pretty much already glanced over in way of thought. The problem is that I don’t consider it a day job to come up with ideas for a game that aren’t necessarily going to be used. Do you know what I’m saying? I’m not a developer.

I´ve been training Martial Arts for half my life and I personally don´t think this is a very good addition. I know, suspension of disbelief and all, but unarmed combat has only been used on the battlefield as a rare necessity, and even then usually not in military style conflicts. It just makes no sense to move into battle unarmed in a medieval fantasy settting. Historically, unarmed martial arts has only been used against armed opponents due to oppression (not allowed to own weapons, eg Okinawa) or because of ethical restrictions in an act of self defense (eg. Chinese monasteries).

well, your flaw here should be rather obvious even to yourself, but I give it a shot and try to explain. Even suspension of disbelief is based on adhering to concepts you create within your fantasy. An example: Premise A – Magic exists and can do x,y,z things. So you can do that in your story/world. you cannot do u,v,w without breaking the suspension. Weapons and armors exist in GW2, so there are rules similar to real history in this regard. This isn´t really too hard a concept to grasp. Next time before you try engaging in satire you´d like to check the premises for a minute or two.

The point is that every time you open the map and look at it you are reminded that all of these biomes are unnaturally rectangular. It’s like looking at a big table instead of the feeling you get when you open up the world map in most other big MMOs.

That is not a point at all, as you don´t “experience” maps, but environments.

What’s the meaning of creating new contents while the old ones aren’t accessible to everyone?

Hello, i’m an old Guild Wars player,i’ve been one of those who bought the collector edition of the second title(i love the game), i even bought a second copy to avoid arguing with my brother since we used to share the same acconut , but as soon as i started playing i have been dealing with some problems.
Guild Wars 2 lacks of italian subtitles… How is it possible that a game based on such a good structured PvE could fail so badly in something as easy as a translation?
Now, I don’t have anything against your idea of global hate ,i even tried to wait a year hoping that things could change, they didn’t.
So ashamed of my ignorance about having not been able to understeand anything in the quests, neither in the story in general(i even read the two books in Italian), i found myself leaving guild and friends hoping that one day i would have been back playing Guild Wars 2 (a lot of people who hosted petitions to get italian subtitles got huge amounts of signatures ,yet they didn’t even get considered.).
I gladly noticed that a new expansion is about to come out( Guild Halls °ç° ) , and now i am here looking the Charr statue from the collector edition asking myself:
Italy hasn’t got any rights to play Guild Wars 2?
Why did Guild Wars 1 support italian language while Guild Wars 2 doesn’t?
What’s the meaning of creating new contents while the old ones aren’t accessible to everyone?
Why at this point should i buy Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns?
One last question: Why did you even block indipendent translations??
Maybe i should just sell the Charr Statue and pretend I never had something to do with Guild Wars 2.
Thank you for what you left me with Guild Wars 1 ,i enjoyed every single minute spent in that fantastic game.

Italy has no right to play GW2? I know a lot of Italian players from previous online games, all enjoying english content. That whole translation business has been discussed in other threads, so let me just get to the basics here: You bought a product/service with certain properties that were made known to you. Italian language support was not one of them. You agreed on the purchase. Now you whine a certain property, which was known to you to be absent from the product, does not exist. You passive aggressively attack the business which did nothing but give you the service you bargained for? So what reaction do you expect here now? Sympathy? Certainly not from me.

Insert subtitles not is very expensive and I am sure, if a.net translate the game with another language many other players buy the game.

their marketeers apparently think otherwise. And they have financial stats. And in general more information than you. Businesses are attracted to profit like, well, insert a fitting analogy of your liking here. Apparently there is none to be expected. It is not that hard to understand, especially as everything has been brought up earlier in this thread.

Dueling?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

Yes.

It’s about an easy, fast and fun way to fight with your friends. And it’s not about fairness, JUST FUN.

They could simply make it somehow like that:
-Player A right clicks Player B and selects “Ready for PvP”
-Player B right clicks Player A and selects “Ready for PvP”
-Both players get a window which asks “PvP Fight: Start/Decline”
-If anyone of the two declines nothing happens
-If both accept, the fight begins in 5 seconds
-Every NPC and other players act just as always, only difference is that the two players can hurt each other
-Fight ends when one reaches down state

People who don’t want to PvP in PvE will NEVER, YES NEVER see any windows popping up.
Is it 100% fair? NO. Does it matter? NO. It’s meant for friends or guilds who just want to play and have a bit more freedom.

The worst what can happen is when people chat spam you, but as people already said, in other games this happens very rarely.
Also people can already chat spam you for random things in GW2 and does it happen? No.

If you are so SCARED of it something is wrong with you.
Imagine someone buys a car and his friends say: “NO DON’T BUY AND DRIVE A CAR YOU COULD RUN OVER OTHER PEOPLE!”
You seem like such friends.

well, you sounded somewhat reasonable till the “scared” thing – as this is exactly the kind of abuse people don´t want to deal with when rejecting dueling requests. they being cowardish, noobs, losers, afraid, whatever. You made a good point for not having duels I´m afraid, not that I care either way.

So I tried another MMO. But it is worse!” Can you give me the name of the mmo because i need evidence that “it is worse”? If you can not give evidence: you are not telling the truth.

Here is your evidence against you for not telling the truth: “I stopped playing gw2 for a week because I hated the new pvp matchmaking system so much. It keeps matching me with premades while always pairing me with 1st time pvpers! It got so frustrating, I just gave up on gw2 altogether! No reason to log in anymore!”

Example: you can not give full detail of why you hate something and than turn around and say, you like something in 1 word: It do not make sense.

3 paragraph of reason to not play Guild Wars 2 vs 1 sentence of suddenly changing your mind?= You are not telling the truth!!

Now here is your turn to prove your own evidence against you: from your own mouth are wrong—

Example: you can not give full detail of why you hate something and than turn around and say, you like something in 1 word: It do not make sense.

(I suspect Arena net give you a reward to write this post) I caught you!!

Again: i need name of the mmo: Yes! the name of the mmo!

It’s Tera Online. I said it’s “worse” due to the points I stated that gw2 has that Tera doesn’t have. But Tera is basically a traditional MMO, which means almost all mmos are like this, which made me realize what made me stick to gw2 in the 1st place. The reason I didn’t mention the name of the mmo the first time is I don’t want to start a “Tera hate thread” because that would be inappropriate.

well, what you like or what you don´t like is really a personal thing in the end. But calling TERA a more traditional MMO than GW2 is just plain wrong. Yes, they have some soft Trinity (as even in many dungeons etc. it is not required) and a traditional “I´ll spam your quest log full good!” questing system, but combat is so much more like GW2 wants combat to be. In fact, GW2 is entrenched in traditional RGP combat with the abstract mechanics of stability, protection, autohit etc. they were apparently not bold enough to get rid off – while TERA really embraced action combat. Like GW2 all you like, that´s your thing really, but your claim is really off mark. The only thing keeping me from playing TERA is that motley crew anime crap and all the weirdos it attracts.

the “playerbase” is not a few people on a forum, amongst most of which you usually rekognize the same names over and over again.

Zerker is not a problem, every game has a “meta” gear, trinity games have different ones for different roles, but that does not change anything.

Stacking IS a problem, as it invalidates the attempt of creating a “twitchy” game. The issue behind that is abstract combat mechanics that carried over from more traditional mmorpg. Protection, stability, autohit and the like are the antithesis of action combat. If you throw those two styles of games together, you get a messed up result (TERA did combat way better, but don´t get me started on that game as a whole).

Difficulty. Or the lack thereof. Anet tried to include players of even the most abysmal skill level. Which is ok. But if you do that, you cannot lock better rewards behind difficulty. So, everything has to be an endeavour in yawning or be hard and not give good rewards – which usually makes such areas of a game vacated and forgotten. As the latter makes no sense at all in the long run, you get yawning over and over again.

HIndi and Arabic are both referred to very different “culture” group they mostly unlikely would consume GW2 product. For example GW2 have alcohol drinking, it is different planet for most of the Arabic world.

On other hand countries like Greece, Italy, Portugal (and other Portuguese-speaking countries), Spain (and other Spanish-speaking countries), even Russia with CIS exists in the same “western” culture sphere as Germany, France, USA, UK, etc. and consume GW2 product.

By the way Russians that speak good English in games is a tip of the iceberg. It is like 1/20 of possible playerbase. I know it, I’m Russian.

Which is basically my point.
The number of people that speak a language have nothing at all to do with how many people play a game. Therefore it is completely irrelevant to which languages the game should be available in.

Of course there are people that play it in those countries. But lets say there is a total of 10 000 people that speak Portuguese that plays GW2. Should ArenaNet really spend hundred of thousands of dollars just to translate it for those 10k people?

Actually yes, translations do bring a lot of new players, translations do not affect any existing players. As I sad before I have many Russian friends that don’t know English well and that’s why they never even try GW2. Games generally are being translated (even to Portugeese), to be sold for more people. Anet are just lazy in terms of any coordinated localisation work, for now.

It is normal for games be translated in 5-7 “european” languages, it is not normal for AAA title be translated in 2.5 languages.

there is no “lazy” in the corporate world when money is involved. If market projections showed a good revenue for a Russian or whatever translation, you would get it. It is not that hard. Also, there is no liability for them to do any translation, on which your “lazy” accusation had to be based on.

Easily retconned. All it would take is an intrepid band of Stone Summit dwarves who stubbornly refused to undergo the Rite of the Great Dwarf and were either forgotten or stricken from the record due to undwarvenly behavior. Perhaps, after a time, they have come to regret their behavior and have returned from their dark wanderings, hoping to reunite with their lost kin — but alas! Until they make up for whatever undwarvenly thing they did, they are for some reason or other unable to undergo the Rite.

And so they become player characters.

to the detriment of an iconic moment of GW1 lore. So some LOTR enthusiasts can enjoy playing Gimli, G1ml1 and xxGimlixx. Nah…

i said “stack” 4 to 5 times but they never listened, at this point i knew they were noobs.

however we got bloomhunger without any problem,

next map was harpy map.

all of us fell down by knock back few times and i realize warrior showing offline.

so i voted to kick warrior and instead they kicked me.

do you think this is fair?

Yes.

I hate all the stacking though, so I would have been in my element not having to do it, for once.

Because of it I don’t do dungeons, or fractals, at all.

I understand the game encourages you to do it, but if it’s possible to not do it (which I’m sure it is), they were perfectly within their rights to not do it.

Heck, even if it’s not possible, they were still perfectly within their rights to try.

even on your little anti-elite crusade you should be able to understand that this is not a question of morality. The game encourages the – albeit very, very lame – stacking method, OP was telling people to be good at the game. Which is something human beings normally strife for, being good at something. They chose not to. Guess there we have some more little hierophants for your personal cause.

Don´t get me wrong, I really dislike GW2 combat with the dungeon stacking and all. But if you change the game there will be a new best gear people will flock to, nothing changed. I wonder what that whole zerker complaining is really about. I suspect it is 10% trinity fans finally wanting to get their beloved, dusty system in here and 90% bad players who cannot manage damage mitigation in zerker, feel left out and demand better players having their toys removed.

But hey, increasing hp and damage and making more stuff unblockable/undodgeable also makes it more difficult! :^)

hm, I think I remotely remember a game that did quite well with such an ambitious approach. I wonder which game that is…

As for the Zerker meta, Mirta got it right – there will always be a “meta”. Algreg.3629

The problem is not learn the language. What i think is if they translated to Russian, Spanish and German, they could translated to my language too.

They have not translated it to Russian.

Both Spanish and German are very large languages, with rather large playerbases (I seem to recall something about the German playerbase alone being bigger than the whole NA playerbase back in GW1. I’ll see if I can find it.

If they start translating into minor languages they would suddenly have to start supporting hundreds of languages, which would require hundreds of new employees which would require millions of dollars.

1- Germany not large languages. Verty small languages use in the world.

2-Portuguese used in 9 countries as an official language, and in more than 20 paieses as a second language more. On average 340 million people speak Portuguese as the language oficial.E the fifth most spoken language in the world. (Data taken from google)

German is an official Minority language in 7 of Germanys neighbouring countries and in 2, except of Germany it is one of the offical languages. Not to forget there are enough countries, like for example on eastern Europe that have german native speaking Minorities or speak languages very close to German.
It may not be the biggest speaker group, but German is still in den Top Ten.

However what it is probably more important for A.net: There may be only 185.000.000 people in the world that speak German, but central Europe is a pretty rich region with a high standard of life, so the chance that a very big part of them owns a PC and so is a potential costumer of a.net is probably a few percents higher then people that speak Portuguese.
they’re also more likely to buy in-game stuff, since the avarage life standard is higher.
I read a study made during the football WC last years, that in brazil only 50% of the people have access to the internet and then, from that 50% you’ve got to subtract the people that use mobile phones or tablets to use the internet and people that visit an internet café to do so.
A.net has to think comercially and decide which markets are the most likely one to be potential costumers. this isn’t meant to be racist, or that they don’t “like” the other languages, it’s an economical decision.

Also: Germany has already a pretty good dub-scene (eventhough of course some games/movies are still kitteny kitty). The infrastructure to make dubs for that language is already there, so people are used to getting translated stuff especially since the german group of players in GW1 was pretty big. Chance is, that some people wouldn’t have buyed an untranslated version.

i personally don’t like the English version, because i personally think the German one sounds more “fantasy”-like. In other games, books and movies i prefer the original language and subs, but GW2 just sounds more epic in German, in my humble personal opinion.

yeah, well, in the end, there just is no objective measurement for art, so personal taste of cause matters a lot. As for the Brazilian guys: Don´t get me wrong, it´s not like I dislike you having a translated version, just bringing up the facts why there probably won´t be any. And without wanting to sound too “teachy”, you can see it as an opportunity. I mainly learned English with games as a kid and if you do this, you will discover a very rich source of art and entertainment beyond the translations you consume now. It´s really worth a try.

2-Portuguese used in 9 countries as an official language, and in more than 20 paieses as a second language more. On average 340 million people speak Portuguese as the language oficial.E the fifth most spoken language in the world. (Data taken from google)

Number of people that speaks a language in the world doesn’t relate to number or possible players to the game.
Portuguese have a very large number of speakers, but a small number of possible players, and many from that small amount of players knows how to speak English so the need of a translation even smaller.

I don’t see ANet translating this game in any other language, Chinise was the only one that was a possibility in my opinion, but they got their own client so they are already covering the best cost/benefit languages they can.

EDIT: lol @Algreg great minds thinks alike eh?

I take it but really, we are just stating the obvious. To add one thing – not in a million years would I play a game or watch a movie in a translated German (my native tongue) version when I have access to the original. That even applies to French stuff which, being really rusty, gives me a rough time. Translations are never the same as originals, in very few cases, they are even better (German version of Big Lebowski e.g. is even greater than the original), but usually, they fail – because it is really hard to catch the spirit of the original in a different language and because more often than not distributors don´t really put enough ressources into localizations.

A lot of people speaking a language does not equal a large market. And the German language market is the biggest in Europe I think. Russian gamers have a history of being fluent in english on a gaming level.

But in the end: If market research would suggest there was money to be made vs. costs, there would be a portuguese version, with or without your demand. Simple as that.

Well, im brazillian too, but theres nothing dubbled in guild wars 2, just translated. And if the game was translated, it would be under the supervision of the staff of the game, right? Nothing will be lost.

errrm, the phrase lost in translation does not refer to missing lines or words.

Legendary weapons stopped being legendary the second they took WvW complition out, in my opinion.

lol, wvw map completion makes them legendary? Please tell me you are kidding. I did that once before the change and didn’t fight one single other player. It just took time. SO LEGENDARY.

rofl, lol, lol, pmsl… I did not write legendary, but I guess you were too enarmored with last decade´s juvenile internet lingo to notice. And yes, WvW apparently stood out, telling from the incessant complaints by people not competent enough to do it in this very forum for years. Rofl.

Except that someone with a more “mature outlook” wouldn’t be whining about a game all day on forum, especially for an event that lasts only 24h.

That’s actually a very childish outlook.

If they didn’t voice an opinion then nobody would be any wiser that a lot of players didn’t like it.

It’s not childish to have an opinion and not be afraid to voice that opinion.

All they needed to do was have a means to turn it all off and then most likely there wouldn’t have been many complaints if any.

so, why exactly are the people arguing against your point of view – having an opinion and voicing it – childish? Because they are not your opinion or opinions rubber-stamped by you? Ah, the good ol SJW trick, of cause, everyone is entitled to an opinion as long as I consider it politically correct.

You’re way over-analyzing this.

In your opinion. However I wasn’t weighing in on the whole “us versus them” mentality of this argument. I was weighing in on the original poster’s idea. As for my opinion on the whole argument, its monumentally stupid. It boils down to sounding like this “If you were really a considered person you would waypoint and run back so I don’t have to sacrifice my time to resurrect your character, it’s only x amount of seconds of your time which is nothing compared to the x amount of time I would have to give up helping you.” “Well if you were a truly considerable person that time wouldn’t matter because you helped another human being.” Notice the circular and repetitive pattern of the argument?

based on the axiom that helping someone is a good thing, regardless of his actions or willfully and unnecessarily being a liability to you. I reject your axiom and collectivist weltanschauung.

Thank you for teaching me a new word, even if it’s german. I don’t think I will ever be able to pronounce it.

oh, I was pretty sure it being one of those cute few words that made it into the english language, like Kindergarden and Weltschmerz. Gonna have to check this

they never have been “legendary”, they always were heavily dependant on sheer luck. The only noteworthy requirement that had nothing to do with farming/money and required some competence has been the WvW completion, and even that is gone now. So no, if anything, the kind of quest system they are now implementing does not make it worse – maybe even better, depending on the requirements. Though chances are, being the casual company for casual players, completing the quests will not require any excellence.

i wonder what you guys would say if you were involved in this event

I would say freedom of art transcends my personal tragedy. And if I didn´t, because emotions would get the better of my personal values, that would maybe be a human reaction, but still not invalidate those values.

The problem is that plane accident happened ONLY few days ago, almost a week. Of course this “joke” could affect people from EU, it’s too recent for us.

A lot of people of our contry (and other countries) died because a pilot decided to crash a plane in a mountain. We are sensitive about it and imo when I saw this april fools joke I felt really bad. ANet could have thought to change it before add it because it affect to the sensitivity of EU players (more for germans and spanish players)

Anyways I see in this thread a lot of comment like “man tragedies happens”, “people die everyday in the word”, “we kill people in this game and none cares!” and kittenty comments like that. It’s not the same!! I respect your opinion, but you dont respect ours. You could have a bit of emphaty.

Ok tragedies happens but when a TRAGIC happened only some days ago you can’t add a “joke” like this one… If we feel offended just let us to say it and stop making ridiculous comparisons with the excuse “it’s just a joke”.

Are you Europe?

If not, please don’t speak for everyone in Europe. Thanks.

Ehmm I didn’t speak for everyone in EU that’s why I added “more for German and Spanish” (Yes I’m from Europe)

how is some random stranger from Europe more relevant to me than a random stranger from Australia or Africa. If you think that through, according to you some random European life has more importance to you than some random life someplace else. If that isn´t hubris, I don´t know. Personally, I don´t have to feel anything for what is to me an anonymous collective, but I don´t single out anonymous people because of their origin either.

first of all, why do you assume it applies to people in the US? Secondly, not seconding your position does not equal not understanding. I am German and understand what you want, I just happen to disagree.

Back to the topic: Well, what happens here is very different from what you bring up, an enactment of an event is a lot different from “something having to do with planes” in this April´s fool joke. And even if there was such a school shooting simulation. Be offended all you like, I keep it with the Stephen Frye quote earlier in this thread: That does not give you any privelige on other people´s actions and opionions. I don´t care whether you are offended or not. I don´t have to comply to your values and opinions. That in fact is one of the pillars of civilization, my feelings, thoughts and opinions are not to be determined by a collective or some single person.

It as a Pars pro toto.
If you go to this thread: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Getting-to-Know-Your-Fellow-Posters-Thread/first you see there are a lot of the forum users come from the US.
I don’t see anything wrong with you disagreeing with me.
I just think that from a " costumer relations management" pov it would have be wiser when A.net would have taken something that is not as easily connected to “real world”-stuff. they would have prevented a lot of unnessecary kittening and trolling.
just my humble opinion.
I could also have taken 9/11 as an example, but a lot of people have already done that.
it was more about making people think ,that something that is just “some incident at the other side of the world” can be “something extremely close to me and my daily life” at another

Great, you used the correct philological term for the exact thing I said, that is not really invalidating.

I think differently, we live in a world where the public and corporations are already driven before some SJW and other, let´s call them PC enthusiasts. A comparatively small number of people can blow things out of proportion and bully people to act in a way they think is right because they have internet access. This day is as good a day as any other for a corporation to take a stand and ignore these enacted “kittenstorms”.
