Communication with players - a comparison

Not much different from GW2, especially during the pre-launch hype. As it is always – guess you are new to computer gaming? Wait and see that forum after launch when internet people enter the usual “everything about you sucks”-mode.

I guess I should be happy that I played to 80 when it was possible.

I see, it is now impossible to reach level 80. Guess we have to tell this to the wiki-admins, seems like a very vital information. What level is now possible to reach?

as an avid “hater”, even I cannot disregard the many, many things GW2 does really well, way more things than it does really bad. Whoever thinks it is a bad game as opposed to not fitting his personal preferences is out of his mind.

Discrimination? (Non-English chat language)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

people should block whatever they want to block. I used to block everyone speaking German in English maps before megaserver (overflows) and I am German. Just because I cannot stand German gaming lingo. I don´t mind people typing in their language, but I don´t have to see it either. I never blocked anyone because of using other languages beside German as they don´t annoy me. Discrimination is such a silly big word applied to the most banal things these days.

If anything, condition damage is really underpowered in most parts of the game due to cap. But I guess this is just a very thinly veiled “I lose in pvp all the time, please make me win, anet, as I am unwilling to improve myself”-complaint.

Anet LF Game Designer for Raid Content

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

there is no reason to overreact. There is no general binding definition what a “raid” actually is. Just because other games made them time consuming and grindy does not mean you cannot create “casual” ones.

There is already stuff like this in game. Teq, Evolved Worm, some guild missions – not to mention Fractals, which in the time department dwarf a lot of raids in other games already. Does not even have to be for large groups, 8 is already done, 12 is already done in the industry. One may argue that GW2s dungeons are “raidish” content already. The only thing one could hope for is interesting mechanics instead of inflated HP bosses. But Anet has proven they can do this, they just chose the easy way out more often in the past

I can see how your first MMORPG can be a bit confusing at the beginning. But the thing is, different game types are enjoyed by different people.

I understand how the things you brought up can be very confusing at first, but I do not understand how this can cause any major frustration. I just grew into it in my first game of this type.

Chances are, telling by your GF´s reaction, she will just not enjoy this type of game even when she has managed to understand its various aspects. That is in no way insinuating she is stupid or something like that. You say she likes Sim City. Those kind of games are very complex (at least they used to be, no idea about the latest iteration) and you do not grasp all concepts on your first “playthrough” usually. Still, some people enjoy those too.

If you twist a game into something liked by people who usually dislike this type of game, it will stop being this type of game, to the detriment of the people who liked it originally.

Enjoying some of the extra stories, but......

as always the adequate reply to this request is “other people´s stats are non of your kitten business”.

If you are in my party, then it’s my business.

nah, even though I usually follow mmorpg´s “metas” and try to max out my characters in the best way and I am not a friend of “flower sniffing”, it is still not your business. I also consider joining parties when not fulfilling their requests really rude. Still, “your” party does not “belong” to you, my stats are none of your business, period. Pay me RL money, maybe I work according to your wishes then.

The idiomatic phrase “don´t blame the players, blame the game” applies here quite fittingly. After two years of problems like this, you´d imagine Anets game design should have learned to avoid such pitfalls – but they still make the mistake again and again. Removing loot bags or replacing champions with our beloved “Elites” isn´t a good solution either. Why they are unable to place incentives that will encourage succeeding events rather than fail them is beyond me.

I think they have given up on content like that altogether. And with good reason. In the zerg events, bad players don´t stand out really, there is no blame and shame. In coordinated group activities, anet´s precious unskilled players (often wrongly referred to as “casuals”) will be in for a lot of QQ. This will not happen.

Heres a development suggestion: Popups at loggin remembering you whats the name of your toon and the controls for the game. You know, for the also expanding market of half-senile players.

I think their key target audience would benefit from popups with their own personal names.

In GW1, the world revolved around you, in an MMORPG, you are by definition just one of the guys. That, of cause, is no excuse for the rest of the things listed in this thread, which I mostly agree with.

Might-Why No Healing Power?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

As a DPS you can choose to go all might and this 20 stack of might helps to boost you to the extreme.

It seems unfair that a player who’s chosing to sacrifice DPS over healing, and thus goes all healing/support should not have the chance to boost -his- choice.

It would be unfair if the game forced a number of players to pick healing over DPS. Which, to my knowledge, it does not.

"Downed State" frightening for new players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Algreg.3629

Algreg.3629

Downed state is confusing to some new players because all of a sudden their familiar skill bar disappears and is replaced by skills they know nothing about. To make matters worse, they do not really have time to mouse over them to read a tooltip due to the fact that they are dying. So most just randomly spam buttons and hope for the best. The pressure of a near-death experience isn’t exactly conducive to learning.

I totally agree, though, that moving the downed state to level 5 doesn’t solve this problem at all.

So you press one of the four buttons right in front of you and see what it does, you’ve got nothing to loose. You’re dying anyway.

Anet do the darnedest things sometimes

Sigh. New players do hit the buttons, but it isn’t always easy to tell what each skill and its associated animations are actually doing in terms of game mechanics.

But hey, thanks for the sarcasm. It was really productive. :-)

First of all, let me assure you I am firmly believing that players are the worst game designers generally, conforming to players´ wishes almost certainly leads to a “Homer, the car built for Homer” scenario.

That being said, a lot of Anet´s decisions totally baffle me. There are so many areas this game could be improved in, yet they come up with the weirdest stuff all the time. I never felt I needed class specific loot nor have I ever heard anyone complain about this not being implemented. Or downed state – yeah, after many months of therapy, I finally recovered from the terror and confusion this state caused in me below level 5. Design decisions straight from the Twilight Zone…

Game Dev abusing power? Any way to report it?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Algreg.3629

Abuse of power or not… I rather someone abuse power to bring justice than not.

It’s their game not yours. We all have the right to access to play their game but we don’t own it.

Oh yeah, you mean like Guantanamo Bay ? Where they took innocent people from all over the world, and just stripped them of dignity, humanity. Where they treated these innocent people worse than animals just because they’re Muslim ? Where they basically tortured them just to take it out on them ? Oh yeah, real justice that is.

It seems to me that whoever is in power, is the person that dictates what ’’justice’’ is with tyranny and abhorrent apathy.

Remember that ’’justice’’ is a human concept. We made it up. We created it. The universe does not love anyone or hate anyone. We do. Us. Humans. So don’t talk about the sense of justice as if it’s universal and a fact. It’s subjective and it’s based on personal feelings and cultural norms.

Don’t talk about justice as if it’s global, as if people have the same sense of justice, because we dont. What some call justice others call a despicable abhorrent display of inhumanity and apathy and while other call some things a despicable abhorrent display of inhumanity and apathy your kind calls it Justice.

Not that your mind is capable of comprehending the subject of Justice in any other way than ones and zeros, but hey, maybe I sparked up a few of your brain cells if nothing more which in my opinion makes it worth my time.

For lack of a better word, those event farms that have been around since the beginning of the game are completely “lame”. But nothing you should bother about – you are not missing out on rich storytelling nor (fantasy-)material gain. In this single case, at least no important follow ups are blocked as far as I know. Finally, the blame is really on game design, when such activities offer way better rewards than exciting, risky, meaningful and fun content.

Algreg.3629

Well this thread is embarrasing. As soon as anet delivers slightly more complex fights people claim its too hard. Its really not hard. I honestly dont know what to think. I thought games were supposed to be challenging.

I want more than 10 times the difficulty of this fight for future stuff. But its a step in the right direction. Maybe you will learn how to play the game if anet continues to increase the difficulty. I can only hope. :P

cultural change happens.

80s – games were rather new and niche. They were whatever their developers made them to be, also barely any means of communication between audience and developers.

90s – games slowly became mainstream and met a culture that admired achieving and saw failure as an incentive for improving. People barely complained about difficulty.

2000s and later – games are mainstream, western culture is post-materialistic / post-socialist. Everyone is special. Achievers are seen as suspicious or are downright frowned upon. Self-improvement is not viewed as gratifying anymore. People don´t enjoy overcoming obstacles, but demand having them removed.

The decline in video game culture simply mirrors the decline of western civilization. Sad, but that is just the way of the world. Or poetically put: It is said that what is called the Spirit of an Age is something to which one cannot return.

So now you cater to the 1%?

of cause such data is not valid in a statistical sense, but it is not a bad measure in the long run. Just look at xfire – of cause people using that are just a very small subset of the market, but GW2 has been in the top ten since launch. That shows some consistency I´d say. Also, even if sample sizes are small, why should they not be somewhat representative of the whole market – do only special people use those resources? I guess GW2 is very probably the most succesful MMORPG short of WoW by far (and certainly I do not have a history of fanboyism in any way).

Call me crazy, but I’m beginning to suspect that someone doesn’t want this game to last very long (maybe NCSoft upper management?) or the management within Anet is getting a little haywire. Or perhaps it’s simply of case of NCsoft testing their budget and the living story model is simply becoming a product of “how many players can the game keep with spending as little money, dev time and resources as possible?” Which is doesn’t make much sense at all, considering that Anet has around 400 employees now.

I really do not want to shock you, but this is how every corporation works. For good reasons too.
