Well, they were wise and ensured that all big drops come from chests which aren’t affected by MF.

It won’t really be a treadmill. It would be if they kept increasing the cap and moving the goalposts though.

What about people who do not like crafting?

ArchonWing.9480

People who don’t like crafting….

Wait, people actually like crafting?

I don’t know. I see it largely as busy work— nothing but a time sink Unlike certain activities in the game such as wvw which are supposed to be fun in and of itself, I can’t find staring at the crafting menu for 10-20 minutes engaging at all.

The best way to tell if content is good or not, is that if it’s of any engaging value in and of itself. Reward can be part of it, but when it comes to crafting, the only reason to do it is for the reward.

It’s ok though. I’m sure WvW’ers will love being accused of lazy because they don’t want to be forced to do banal pve content in order to catch up. We should make it so that ascended armor is only available by getting materials from wvw world rank chests. That would be totally awesome.

As for the “entitlement” crowd, I’m just going to say that it would be right to accuse people of wanting stuff handed to them (because there’s obviously no medium between forever and immediately) is that you would have a point if this were in any way challenging or required skill. I’m afraid mindless grinding isn’t one of these, though people have frequently confused the two.

does anyone actually enjoy the process of crafting (not the money you can make from it, but the process itself)? Is there even one tiny bit of fun to be had while crafting? Listening to conversations about outhouses if you’re in LA doesn’t count.

What? How dare you consider things like fun and enjoyment.

Exotics Are Now Pointless

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

They’re not worthless. We still got skins and stuff, as well as stopgaps.

The main problem is that it is important to balance content so that the highest level of gear at max level won’t just faceroll it— err… even more. If we keep the exotic standard and introduce the gear, then the game will naturally become even easier. If content gets harder, then well… it just suddenly become more required.

It’s just something to think about when you consider new content. Granted it shifted 10% only, but it’s still 10% more of an issue.

I most likely won’t mind getting some, but this will certainly affect me regardless.

Goals:

  • Annoy grinders into limiting their progress so they can’t just get it in 3 days
  • Annoy off and on players so it takes even longer to get their stuff
  • Annoy people who don’t like grinding
  • Annoy people that don’t want vertical progression
  • Annoy people with alts
  • Annoy action oriented people by using the most banal and minimally interactive channel as crafting being the first available option.

This way everyone can be equally as miserable, though the skinner box rats won’t mind since they just care about chasing the next shiny and would defend pulling a lever every day as a valid game mechanic that should be “dealt with”

If you don’t believe me, look how they destroyed all 3 utility infusions in a egalitarian fashion.

10% is a big difference in WvW.

10% is like a piece of gear. Do you run around with one piece of broken armor?

10% is also common for a number of traits. In fact, I’ve made quite a few trait sacrfices for just stuff like 10% vs burning enemies.

But it’s not a good idea to trivialize 10% anyways. If it didn’t matter, than hah well, why even bother having them in the first place?

Scepter’s a great secondary weapon.

It’s just that the game misleads you into thinking it’s a 1200 range weapon.

In PvE since enemies just sorta stand there, scepter does good with smite when traited and equipped properly. Against people though, it’s of more dubious use, but it really depends if you can get that skill 3 off.

Why cater to casuals?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I have seen the complete opposite. My friends who where “hardcore” finished all content available in a few weeks, and left never to return. I consider myself a “casual” player, and I am still here, still playing with my main and still have story and content to do. I am the one who spends money in the gem store, not my “hardcore” friends.

Yea, I’m afraid people may confuse locusts with hardcore players. The type that just consumes content as a sort of rat race and then leave to the next crop. I wouldn’t care much for keeping those, except to capture the burst in sales when an expansion is released.

Hardcore players are the type to theorycraft, explore the game’s intricacies and provide input on how to make it better as well as participating in competitive aspects.

It’s always a false dichotomy to just say there are casuals and hardcore players, of course.

15 in radiance for wvw/pve?

in Guardian

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

I’ve run 30 radiance almost always, so 15 radiance is very good.

For zerg farming events, 15 radiance, is of course really strong. You’re benefiting so many people it’s not even funny. Though it does lack its luster against tougher enemies or dungeon instances since the effect isn’t that useful on tough bosses unless they have adds you can exploit. It’s really boosted by radiant power (25 radiance) or Fiery Wrath (10 zeal), so at least in pve, 15 radiance is nice, but I usually wouldn’t take it by itself. For the most part it’s best in content you’re going to faceroll anyways. As a result, I ditched the 0/15/30/20/5 build I was using since ultimately it was used for content where AH isn’t that needed.

In WvW, this again is strong in zergs, with mass blinds and you should have it constantly popping in larger fights. Since you don’t care about your own individual damage as much in wvw it’s less needed to take the fiery wrath or radiant power— damage in wvw is a luxury.

I’m currently doing 0/30/10/30/0 as a general build since I don’t want to respec between pve/wvw (sacrificed justice might for Strength in Numbers- the 250 toughness for a 10 point investment is hard to beat, plus it helps allies too), but 0/30/0/30/10 might be some really nice offensive group support from wvw. I guess 0/30/10/20/10 isn’t a bad choice too, but I just can’t ditch Pure of Voice.

I don’t see much of that on my server; most people tend to be alright, and if not, they don’t do much of anything. Then again I come from battle.net, where there’s tons of malicious activity and griefing going on.

If there’s generally any trash talking, it’s 1 or 2 people that get ignored fast, and it generally happens in wvw, but that’s natural. There’s hardly any trash talk from what little I see in pvp, and that I found rare.

On these forums, there seems to be a lot of people with control freak tendencies— they tend to be so concerned with what other people doing, and often labeling people who do not play like them derogatory terms like “casuals” “no-lifers” or “exploiters”, well the precise words don’t matter, but there seems to be some kind of moral superiority complex going on— in any case other people are some plague that would destroy all of civilization if left unchecked.

Why is Performance Never/Rarely Addressed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

ArchonWing.9480

Well, blame the bandwagoners that thought it’d be cool to stack on a few servers and then consider themselves above all the PvE peasants with their l33t 11111111.

Ah, well I think the problem is that it’s just advantageous to bandwagon on the biggest servers, and it’s a problem created by the players, and A-net too in game design.

In WvW at least numbers and coverage are the defining factor. In PvE this isn’t nearly as important but bigger servers get stuff done faster, and thus tons of people guest… which creates these problems. So you get a situation is that if something doesn’t work to

  • Zerg it
  • If it fails, send a bigger zerg
  • If that fails, keep zerging
  • If that fails, complain on the forums that your opponents are just mindless zerging nightcappers and that you could take at least 5 of them if you fought fairly.

I don’t really know what to do, except maybe make it very cheap to move to lower populated servers to even things out a bit.

Negativity?

ArchonWing.9480

I love this game. (dodge rolls insults in zerker gear)

But the thing is that IMO the game has many problems with it that shouldn’t exist, and sometimes I feel they sorta go ahead with stuff even if people aren’t too happy with it.

Personally, my problems are usually usability related though. This game just has a very crappy UI with massive screen clutter and less than helpful tooltips/in-game help. Also, take the achievements screen. It’s very bad if an achievement tells you to do X in different zones but doesn’t tick off what zones you did like any other sane, modern UI would, leaving it to memory. Like no? That’s why I didn’t even bother with the air balloon chest one. I’m highly skeptical people created it and thought it was acceptable.

I don’t really play games for enlightenment, but I do not want to be hassled by the game being unable to present itself properly.

Although I would say a number of oversights in the game do cause people grief, such as wvw achievements which are unreasonable or challenges that you only have 2 weeks to do. I’m all for challenges, but it does create a case where you feel like you miss out on a lot if you don’t constantly log in.

I’ve always expressed very harsh criticism of games I play. That’s just how I am. The ones that manage to survive it though; I feel I have some value. But on the other hand, people wouldn’t be so passionate about it unless, well, they actually cared.

Take the whole vertical progression debacle. There’s quite a few of us that like the gearing status quo as it is, and so encroaching on it can lead to some hostile reactions.

The other thing is that I felt the game at first was pretty newbie unfriendly. In most games I’ve played, the story mode or somthing serves as a tutorial for gameplay. This… well, I don’t really recommend new players to even bother with the story too much, since it really doesn’t help.

On the other hand, there’s a lot of people that have unreasonable, and possibly contradictory demands. I’ll just leave it with that, but I’ll just that logic isn’t a very common trait on either side of the equation. And then I see posts that whine about stuff only 13 year olds whine about. (No offense to any actual 13 year olds though)

Ascended Gear to Kill Builds and Alts?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

Depending on how hard it is to get, it could be a problem.

Currently, I have one of each exotic weapon (that can be used by my characters). I understand that 5-10% may not be much, but the thing is if I have a choice of what to use, I’m going to be more likely to pick the one that has the higher stats.

Let’s just put it like this. Currently I sometimes swap between greatsword and 1-handed sword on my guardian. I would most likely aim for the ascended GS first, and this pretty much all my orange choices will naturally fall to the wayside unless I’m purposely gimping myself. It’s the same reason none of my alternate weapons are rare. I have no need to use subpar weapons if I have a better option already.

With time gating, pursuing other builds becomes expensive, sub-optimal, and not fun.

And of course, there’s the issue of offhands though I’d imagine they’d be more thoughtful and make 1-handers and off handed easier to acquire, but let’s just say I have my doubt.

Unless of course the difference is like infusions, where 0.5% diffrence isn’t noticable. But I doubt that’s what people who desire vertical progression want. It’s a catch-22. If it doesn’t matter, then people will complain it’s a waste of time to get it. If it does matter, then people will feel required to get it.

None of this really matters if gear is offered through reasonable channels. Problem is that if it’s brought through limited channels then that isn’t very cool, especially if the main way is through a boring method of crafting.

Personally, I think the status quo is very good, because you can trivially change your gear almost as you need. Because the difference between exotic and rare isn’t that bad, there’s no need to worry you’ll run with people that have gear so bad they won’t do anything. And thus, there’s less of a reason to blame that. However, while one may say that exotic to ascended won’t be that big of a diffrence, fine. But what say you to those folks still in yellows or with alts in yellows?

However, I will say that there is too much garbage on the right side of the screen and I can’t believe anyone on the team hasn’t realized how awful it is when even the event you are doing gets minimized. Then again, this UI is one of the worst parts of the game, for sure.

When should I start crafting?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

Craft whenever you can. Due to upcoming changes, it’ll be nice if you can max out some of the professions relevant to you.

When I mean “whenever you can”. I mean when you don’t go out of your way for it. So if it involves interrupting your gameplay or breaking your bank, don’t do it. It would be a good idea not to buy any just for crafting until you get close to 80— use what you have on hand.

When you are close to 80, you can start aggressively crafting— it’ll level you up to 80.

If you don’t like it, then just wait until you have good stockpile of gold@ level 80 and just buy the materials.

The other thing is of course to pick a profession that generates stuff relevant to you. So tailor for light armor class , leatherworker for medium armor class, armorsmith for heavy armor. Although I wouldn’t go for weapon/armor crafting until later— it is quite expensive and annoying.

Is there a genuinely good reason for it not to be useful to everyone, though? I can’t think of one.

Actually no when the purpose of the item falls outside a ocean of unlimited wants. The item was built with the (slightly added convenience) purpose of getting you to roll a completely new character. It was most likely figured out that the first 20 levels are too trivial or something. All you really have to do is convince them the remaining 60 are the same.

Also, it’s not like any of us did anything to earn it. If you did, then you could argue that your effort went to waste. Here, it’s hard to say claim a loss of significant value.

How do you want to 'get' Ascended gear?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

I’d rather it not exist at all, but it should be either the fast, difficult way, or the slow but trivial way as usual. It should not be exclusive.

  • Completing difficult content. Say high level fractals would reward a random ascended piece, but now ascended armor too. Obviously it should apply to more places. New content could be made queen’s gauntlet style, etc for a guaranteed ascended piece. This should not be time gated. You would acquire it quickly if you are skilled. And obviously challenges should be varied and jumping puzzles could reward them.
  • Standard time gated laurel, guild commendation, another currency, dungeon tokens, grindfest. Account Bound.
  • Karma (soulbound), badges (no really, please), WvW chests. As a wvw player, this is of course what I really want. We don’t want to spend hundreds of hours doing worthless pve grinding especially when this tier impacts us.
  • 1 Random piece of one for each Monthly (Make monthlies harder). Account Bound.
  • Free choice of one ascended piece per each level 80 character’s birthday. This helps level out the baseline for everyone that doesn’t want to grind. This also helps people with alts. Naturally, this is soulbound.
  • Crafting (I really hate crafting, but it should still be an option).
  • Randomly Drops in 70-80 zones (Must make 70-80 zones harder) and gated daily.
  • Except as stated, I do not want account bound. I think it’s I should be able to pay whatever price people demand so I don’t have to do any of this. You can buy a legendary on the TP. Why not this?

I really hate it to break it to some of you, but not every item is going to be useful to you. Just because it’s useless to you, doesn’t mean it’s useless for everyone. It’s useful for me, and my situation is hardly atypical. Get that mass of organic material located behind your eyes working (yea, I know it’s hard) and realize such scenarios are entirely possible.

It’s not supposed to be that useful. It’s supposed to be a minor convenience. If it were anything but, then people would cry about being excluded. (Oh, I’m at a disadvantage because I started late)

Just because it doesn’t fit your playstyle, doesn’t mean it was a mistake. It would be like complaining about getting pvp skins and boosters when you don’t actually pvp. Get over yourselves.

General opinion of Portals in Jump Puzzles

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

I got into an argument with other players over this and it got me wondering what the general opinion is of this.

Currently, if a Mesmer finishes a jump puzzle they can use their portal ability to bring up anyone they want to the end of the puzzle. This also gives the achievement and the items in the chest at the end.

I always believed in having at least one thing in a game being purely skill based and jump puzzles fit it pretty well. Not everyone likes them, a lot hate them but others like me LOVE them. I have done every JP in the game and have not needed a single Mesmer portal. At the same time while I put the time and effort into beating this really hard jp, people can get a free ride up if just one Mesmer does it for them giving the same reward for someone who did the entire puzzle by them self. To me this devalues the actual achievement of finishing a puzzle because a large handful of people got a friend to do it for them and didn’t personally spend the time doing it.

So is it fine that someone can carry their friends to the end of a jump puzzle they couldn’t do or should it be earned by yourself alone?

I’m actually torn on this one.

I understand how it seems that using a portal is actually “skipping content”. And that players are being carried. I am uneasy over that myself.

However, the jump puzzles themselves are such an abomination of issues regarding jump box sizes, race height, and server-client location disagreements, never mind lag that I can understand the desire to use existing in-game mechanics to compensate.

In the end, if ANet insists on having them in this game, then players can avail themselves of anything that will allow them to complete them.

I understand jump puzzles appeal to a large number of players.

I will never change my belief that platform play (best served by Nintendo hardware) has no place in a mainstream MMORPG that uses a server-client paradigm.

Hi,

Your thoughts are almost the same as mine. It does feel kind of cheap, but on the other hand, due to the dubious placement of platforming on this game, it seems possible to consider this a workaround.

Well, every company wants to make a buck or two. A-net won’t be greedy until something like a Real Money Trading Post comes in, then yea…

you mean like the gem exchange?

buy gems-> convert to gold -> buy directly off TP.

That’s not the whole deal. I’m talking about either being able to sell gold or in game items for money while the game company takes in the profit from trading post fees.

The cash cow in that is quite huge, and it has resulted in some of the most disgusting, cynically marketed ,and greedy behavior on all ends of the equation (Look at D3)

Orr didn't work. How should it be changed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: ArchonWing.9480

ArchonWing.9480

Well, consider what Orr is.

It’s a piece of land (and occasionally water) with a bunch of risen.

Except for the temples which at least give us a touch of history, most of the place is boring and repetitive. I remember how I just pretended the southern part of Cursed Shore just doesn’t exist. Most of the better zones in the game have some story to tell. Orr is the generic “endgame” land where they just throw the strongest enemies at you.

It needs more flavor and maybe more advancement by courageous adventurers and prospectors looking for opportunities after Zhitan’s fall and just stop going back and forth between Jofast and whatnot.

Yes, I understand none of this applies to people who just go after shinies and ignore everything else, but to them the game might as well be in a tiny enclosed square with tons of mobs and a lever to receive loot.

Wxp is a terrible indicator of command ability, as that’s best earned by… zerging.

Truth is, no matter what arbitrary criteria we use, there will be problems. A commander can prove themselves… by commanding. There is no other way, and it’s up to each individual to decide to accept this person as a leader or not.

Respect is something no amount of gold can buy and it certainly cannot be determined via any checklist. Every experienced wvw’er knows the commanders that are noteworthy on their server. There are certain commanders that I know are worthy because I’ve fought alongside them and have seen what they can do. I don’t really give a kitten what other people think they deserve it or not.

It’s already fine the way it is. Everyone else can put up or shut up.

Zerg Farming: Needs to be stopped.

Here again, I thought the definition of “fun” is different from one person to another.

I find it fun/enjoyable to farm with tons of people.
Unfortunately, my definition of “fun” is wrong based on OP’s definition of fun. kitten .

I agree. It’s amazing how selfish and self centered people can be with the attitudes of ’you’re not playing the way I want you to play’, or ‘I don’t find this fun so you shouldn’t either’. I’ve heard many people say they are having fun zerging and running with all the people, just as I am. We’re not trying to dictate how you play, so try and show a bit of consideration. If someone feels that they HAVE to zerg farm, well, that’s their hang up.

TL;DR – Sorry, the world doesn’t revolve around you.

Yes, it’s utterly gross how many busybodies pollute this community. They remind me of grumpy old neighbors with no lives that call the cops for every little thing.

Yes, PTR instances would help. I feel Living Story is a good place to test out concepts.

Although it’d also help if people would stop pretending their lives depended on the game too.

Giving players the option to change the aoe circles would be a nice change even for non color blind people.

This is one of the biggest flaw of the game, and it’s that the game doesn’t like to tell people how it works. You’ll just have to use the wiki. It’s the closest thing to a manual.

No.

I think the game would be a lot better if people minded their own business. Though blocking tags and whatnot would be fine.

Hint: If you join someone’s squad, it renders all other tags invisible.

Dagger necromancers

in Necromancer

ArchonWing.9480

I used to hate dagger a lot since it is such puny range and doesn’t cleave, but it is quite nice if you can get the immobilized off. In WvW, I like dagger because it isn’t where near badly telegraphed like axe is, well except dagger 3.

I do 0/20/0/20/30. In WvW, a necro finds it tough to go into close quarter combat due to stuns and knockdowns, so Foot in the Grave makes DS an excellent way for you to close the gap, as well as when they try to kite you. Usually I like to briefly switch it or out use life transfer to take out people that try to run away, then I’ll be in their face and stabbing them with the dagger.

I use wells (Suffering and Power), and spectral walk. this gives me 2 stun breaks as well. With spectral mastery and warhorn (also traited), I can have 100% swiftness uptime. You may of course take chilling darkness and plague too for big zerg fights.

Locust swarm is most excellent with dagger, and will greatly increase your damage output. The cripple and swiftness makes anyone that gets caught in it less likely to run away and the most amusing thing is that it easily procs crit hit sigils, such as sigil of fre.

In WvW, my gearing is a kittenaotic, since I’m not going to bother with soldier’s trinkets just for wvw. Basically armor is half knight, half soldier, and rest is zerker. It’s very survivable, at least compared to when I just used zerker.

In PvE, of course soul reaping isn’t necessary, and I’d imagine people would toss it in spite and whatnot.

Edit: They censor Fl ash? Really?

One finally thing to remember is to keep moving when using warhorn or dagger skills. In PvE it doesn’t matter, in wvw they usually don’t let you just stand there and hit them.

If a large portion of the community chooses to pick unfun content with only the reward in mind, then they only have themselves to blame. You cannot force people to do the proper things.

And I like these events. They require groups to be spread more, and gasp require some degree of organization. And it might actually be a little hard. I don’t know what you’ve been playing, but there’s a good chance these events might fail— when does that ever happen in open world outside of temples?

Also, if you get killed, reviving might caused others to get downed too. Go run back, kitten . :/

Failing has no consequence. You lose one loot bag, gain 40 more. People don’t care. They make more profit out of failing.

And of course if you get killed, run back. If you’re downed though, There’s no excuse for people not to try. Especially if you’re not near any threats.

If failing provides the bigger reward, then that’s the real problem. I was just pointing out that most events of the game aren’t even possible to fail unless you try.

And if downed, I guess that makes more sense. But sometimes it’s pointless to revive when you’ll get downed yourself.**

  • And then people clamour on why zerker gear is the only armor to wear.

So much dramatic motioning and making a big fuss over nothing, some people around here.

It’s a friggin blue icon. Its a tool. Some people use it properly, some don’t. Nothing in the game means anything— it depends on what is done with it. If the presence of them gives you trouble in Lion’s Arch, then I’m sorry, please uninstall the game because the rest of the game is a lot harder. Step away from the screen and go outside or something. Not really sure what you’re doing staring at the minimap so much to begin with.

A good commander has people following them, a bad one promptly gets ignored eventually. Either mode.

And it’s not like wvw doesn’t have that zerg loot train either, so don’t give me that nonsense about it being wvw only.
