I am watching this thread (and everything else in the sPvP forums) closely. I’ll post something tomorrow to update you guys. Sorry I’ve not been posting more, I can’t be in meetings and on the boards at the same time.
Thanks for all the constructive posts. I know you guys are frustrated right now, so thanks for being so organized, well-written and metered in your responses.
I supported and still support Arenanet’s stance on PvP modes and that they only want conquest mode sPvP. If you ever do add a death match mode, please put a minus 50% damage modifier on those death match mode maps so people won’t die within 3 seconds of being focus fired and keep it at 3 players per team. This will make the game play more interesting and challenging.

Mesmer, Guardian, Engineer.
Thief is over rated.
Necromancer and Warrior can use some improvement.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Condition Thief would be broken and overpowered beyond your imagination if the Necromancer profession didn’t exist. The Necromancer is the biggest thing that keeps a condition Thief in check, they can consume your conditions for epic heals, turn them in to boons, send them to you etc. Even with this big counter I still love playing my condition Thief

How to play a Thief in Guild Wars 2 dungeons:
1. Stay at ranged and do damage.
2. Watch for the “here comes the 1 shot” hint, dodge/evade ability.
3. If you want to go to “I could get kittened up anytime without being able to dodge zone” also known as “melee range” then do so after the target did a 1 shot ability, so atleast you have window of semi-safety.
4. Use your downed teleport wisely. You can get revived by your team if you port to a safe distance near them.
Hope that helps bro.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Yes it does, Arenanet can make P/P viable for both power crit and condition damage builds with the following changes:
1. Instead of adding bleed, it adds 1 stack of vulnerability for 5 sec.
2. Instead of adding vulnerability, it adds 3 stacks of bleeding for 8 sec. 3i, decent damage.
3. Increase damage by 15%, increase firing speed by 20%.
4. Increase damage by 300%.
5. Reduce initiative cost by 1.

I always find amusing that the thief stolen version of the warrior whirling is actually better than the original skill.
Compare the cooldown between the two, it is only logical that the thief version is better.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Warrior #1 steal, mass damage with evade.. OP.
Not really, depends on the situation. Sometimes Engineer gunk and Necromancer AoE fear are a lot better. Guardian lock out is also very nice if you want to finish 1 opponent.
They need to improve Thief, Ranger and Elementalist stolen abilities. The Thief stealth should be longer and give swiftness. The Ranger stolen ability should heal more and remove conditions. Elementalist stolen ability should be some magnetic field that gives us protection, reflection and retaliation for 6 sec.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Melee in WvW… I can’t take that serious. Ranger > Thief in WvW, dominate with Longbow 24/7.

Potential existing weapons to add to the Thief profession in next content patch/expansion:
- Off hand Sword
- Torch
- Rifle
Potential new weapons to add to the game and the Thief profession in next content patch/expansion:
- Fist Weapon
- Chain + Blunt Weapon
- Rapier
- Whip
- Katana (in before “hurr durr too big” Katana can range from a short 1h weapon to a massive 2h)
- Throwing weapon kit (Shuriken/Knives/Darts/Kunais etc. as a 2h weapon with 5 skills)
I personally hope we get Off Hand Sword and Rifle as soon as possible from the existing weapons
I would also love to see some kind of Whip-Chain-Blunt combination weapon added with a 600 range on its abilities
Maybe allow us to dual wield it like the vampires in Underworld or the Hassansins in Prince of Persia? That would be awesome xD

Are you talking to me?
I have IWIN buttons similar to a Thief. I was simply asking to check what the range on Steal was, since I haven’t played my Thief enough to be familiar with it. I mean, I could spend some time on the wiki and builder to research it myself, but I had thought I could get an answer on the Thief forums in less time. Apparently Thieves don’t know the range on their own ability, or maybe it’s just you?
Sidenote: Backstab build is very good when the combo adds up to 33,000 damage at (900?) range within 1.0 seconds.
I was talking to Vollendung, I thought it was clear that when not quoting somebody your message is ment for the original poster.
People who think backstab build is good are a joke when it comes to tPvP. Backstab build is neither good or bad, just decent.
To answer your question, steal has a standard range of 900 and a range of 1200 with the trait long reach.
P.S: there is no IWIN button(s) in Guild Wars 2.

Legendary shortbow and pistol look so terrible, but whats the big deal? Who needs them when you can have Crucible of Eternity shortbow and pistol, those look amazing
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Another bad player complaining? what a surprise. Why don’t you try to play a Thief and try to do what you actually are describing here? You will see that you were wrong. Backstab build is okay, not bad, not good.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Full Arah armor, but Order of Whispers hood instead of Arah mask, Crucible of Eternity weapons and black and red color theme. That is the best bro.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Thief has the following attributes:
- High mobility
- Low armor
- Low health
- Trickery (stealth, teleport)
Any class in any game which has these attributes has always been a “high risk, high reward” class which punishes bad players and rewards good players. The gameplay is exciting and rewarding, which makes it more fun to certain people. These classes have always been and always will be the most skill depended class and have the highest skill cap.
People who disagree and cry about thieves are noobs, nothing stops them from making a thief! There is no gear or level barrier in GW2 sPvP, so why don’t they make a thief? Why do they instead come and cry on the forums? It is because they are bad players and don’t have the skill to compete with better thief players ;3

Cluster Bomb hittign for 7-8k AOE for 2 Energy, give me a break?
in Thief
Posted by: Blazer Hellsing.9184
LOL, was the OP who deleted his moronic post serious? How can anybody complain about Cluster Bomb being too “good”?! If anything Cluster Bomb needs to be buffed. It takes 3 seconds to travel, deals below averege damage and puts 1 medicore bleed on the target. Detonation is a bit more decent with bleeds but it requires timing. Also it is not spam-able because it takes time to travel and you can’t recast it because it is turned into detonate function. Overal ability feels very weak.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Because of the initiative system. The initiative system limits ability creativity duo to the fact that abilities must be spam-able proof, this is why Thieves have so little weapon choices and why there is no good control ability on our weapon skills.
It is a choice that arenanet made and it can’t be changed now, this is why the Thief doesn’t have an OH sword, Torch etc.
Arenanet already had a lot of trouble with being creative with our underwater weapon, hence the copy pasta abilities like Delunge etc.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Death Blossom still does 1500 direct damage (which can crit up to 3000) plus 1500 more from bleeding, for a pure direct damage build. To thieves that are addicted to 7k+ crits from backstab that doesn’t sound like much, until you take into consideration that it’s a fairly widespread AoE.
people wanna keep death blossom cuz they like the condition build, i do too, but it doesnt change that it makes D/D a unfocused weapon just like pistol mainhand
There is no such a thing as a “focused” weapon set! Pistol main hand fails because the design is bad, not because it is not focused. D/D is not focused either but works flawlessly.
The problem with Pistol and P/P in general is that the abilities are weak. P/P would be fixed easily to be viable for power crit and condition damage builds with the following changes:
1. Vital Shot instead of bleeding your target, should add 1 stack of vulnerability for 5 sec.
2. Body Shot instead of adding vulnerability, should add 3 staks of bleed for 8 sec. damage should be viable.
3. Unload execution should be faster and the damage should be increased by 15%-20%.
4. Head Shot’s damage needs to be increased by 200%-300%.
5. Black Powder’s initiative cost should be reduced by 1 initiative and it should also add poison with the original shot and every pulse.
With these changes P/P will be just as popular as D/D, S/P and Shortbow. As it stands now, P/P is the weakest settup for PvP… even S/D with Failing Strike is more effective duo to its lock down and harassing potential.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Depends on your playstyle, the most effective builds I played were D/D backstab build, D/D conidtion build, Pistol Whip and Shortbow venom support thief.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
I don’t like WvW at all so I rarely play it, only for monthly achievement. From my limited time in WvW I can say that shortbow is nice for zerg fights
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Create a character, and play a thief, even to level 16. You will learn a ton of information. I was borderline wanting to create a QQ thread here my self because I was getting wrecked as a warrior in WvW by thieves all the time.
Thieves have a lot of tricks, and a lot of awesome utilites, but they can be countered. When playing on my thief in WvW I had a lvl 80 GS glass canon warrior in full exotics who chased me around for a good 5-10 minutes before my friends arrived and killed him, he could have easily killed me, he just didnt know how.
Now that I am back to playing on my warrior, Im happy to see a thief who spams heart seaker. I just dodge it as they lose initiative. Then beat the crap out of them.
A thief in Daggerstorm? Until a played thief, I used to try to kill them with my rifle, and I thought WTF is this OP skill. Now, I dodge roll into them and hack away with my axe.
Dagger thief just stealthed? I used to sit still and look around with my camera for where they went. Suddenly 3/4 my HP was gone, and I was left in oh kitten mode smashing buttons. Now that I’ve played a thief, I have a good (not always right but good) idea of what they are going to do, and where they are going to go, and how to keep my back away from them even though they are stealthed.
In short, it only takes a few days to learn what thieves do and how to play them, a few days that will change your gameplay and make you a better fighter. Not to mention you wont rage as much.
+1 bro, +1 :3 in GW2 the better player wins, not the better profession.

D/P – Shadow Shot – One of 2 perfectly designed dual skill we have. 4 init, blind/gap closer/decent damage. I wouldnt change a thing.
You obviously haven’t spent much time using this in PvP. The only time it does what it is supposed to do is if your target remains almost completely still. It has a slight self root and doesn’t seem to teleport properly on top of that. It definitely need to be fixed to work properly.
I almost exclusively use D/P so I use this skill on a regular basis. If someone is trying to run away or strafe when you are using it, you will likely end up out of melee range and rooted for a quarter second where you land. I never use it unless I know someone is going to stay still or if I want to get back into range after a dodge backwards.
Please read the entire thread before commenting – someone already pointed this out. I agree, I forgot about the self root, just got so used to playing around it. Should be fixed, but the design is otherwise solid.
Update your post instead of blaming people who correct you.
If you want to participate in a discussion, participate. If you want to read a couple comments and rush to throw in your 2 cents, by all means expect to be told to read the thread. I admitted I was incorrect, and corrected myself. Don’t let your personal dislike of the things I’m saying cloud your ability to rationalize.
On Second thought, it would be easier though if I just updated the original post, which I have.
You are jumping to conclusions. I gave you a tip, is this your gratitude?

I created a Thief today only for spvp and, i think is a exploit or bug, I win all games always in 1, 2 or 3 position… Then, i stop play him and use again my elementalist.
Thief is really PURE noob and easy reward hero. I dont change runes, traits or weapons, just enter to spvp and spam 1, 2 and 3. Sometimes i use heal for escape. I just changed my elite ( more thieves rlz ).
I really prefer my elementalist, even if i cant kill a bunny.
I doubt it, I think you got owned pretty hard. Noob Thieves can’t do a thing vs me, doubt you would win against me on your Thief or Elementalist

The entire build has no synargy and is just bad, what is your primary weapon set?
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Oh god yes, Death blossom is good in PvE since i can spam it stacking 25 bleed in 5 sec along with caltrops, in PvP, bleed absolutely suck, your target will not stay in one place to stack enough bleed to do enough damage, heart seeker damage will suck cause you’re condition spec, and stacking 5 bleed before he removes it, our int. is depleted and he has all his skill ready to kitten us up.
P/D sucks too, there’s not enough damage with bleed and the skills are low damage, it’s simply for staying in the back and feel useful by hitting something, you won’t kill people with it.
It’s the same thing with p/p, unload suck balls, damage is low and anyone with half a brain can dodge it, and the second skill takes too long to cast and it’s useless, venerability itself is poor.
So what do we have here for burst damage thief? spamming backstab and pistol whip.
I love d/d thief i don’t care if it’s a condition build or burst just remove death blossom or remove bleed and add immobilize or some other kitten.
The ability doesn’t suck, you do. Of course your target won’t stay in the same spot! Learn to time your attacks, I play a condition D/D Thief in PvP and I love it.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
1-yes i agree if someone is at 10% hp im sure HS is very viable, autoattack i assume is on by default
2-true, but in that situation you can use cloak and dagger without worrying about damage anyways.
3-flawless? lol fanboy much? sorry thats inflammatory but seriously kinda asking for it when stating such an absolute. it favors direct damage builds, proof is that 5 of its skills benefit more from power/crit then from condition.
and my god your a arrogent pri*ck
So at first you disagree with me, then I prove you wrong and you are like “oh kitten, this dude actually knows what he is talking about! I better agree with him”. Now you didn’t agree on point 3 because you don’t comprehend what flawless design is. D/D and Shortbow are the only 2 weapons that are viable for both power crit build and condition build. This brings variety and different playstyles, which is exactly what they wanted: “play the game the way you want it”.
Why would any sane person want to change D/D? A weapon set that is both viable for power crit and condition damage? So what if more abilities benefit from power crit? The fact remains that both power crit and condition builds are viable with D/D.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
I am sick of noob Thieves making dumb suggestions. Leaping Death Blossom is fine. Dagger Dagger is a perfect designed weapon set that is viable for both burst and condition specs.
The only dual ability that needs a redesign is Flanking Strike, everything else works.
not true, you run a conditions dagger/dagger build you mine as well remove all the other moves from your action bar, its a gimmick, a fun one, one that i have a alt gear set just for, but a gimmic nonetheless.
just cuz your biased over it doesnt mean its not an issue.
You think that a D/D condition build doesn’t use dancing dagger, cloak and dagger, heartseeker and auto attack? You are terrible at playing and understanding a D/D Thief.
I am not biased, unlike you I know what I am talking about.
sure you can use it, but its not as effective. a properly built CONDITIONS D/D (dont spout kitten about D/D when right its its more then one spec) build will rely on dodges/evasion effects not stealth. autoattack isnt even included in my discussion, id assume you had it on regardless, and it does pitiful damage. as well as HS, dancing dagger you could use, but lets be honest, youd be more likelyt o kill someone with it with a power/crit build. most you get from conditions is slightly longer cripple.
im not being biased, its simple fact, more of D/D skills benefit from power/crit, yes we have have traits/utilities that benefit from conditions but it doesnt outweigh the overwhelming design direction of D/D.
if HS, cloak, and backstab and autoattack of D/D supported conditions damage rather then being based off of power/crit id agree with ya, but they dont.
your clinging to a halfbaked design that while works, is still a gimmick
1. It depends on the situation, there are situations where auto attack and heatseeker are more effective than leaping death blossom even when playing a condition build.
2. Stealth is far superior than dodge when you are going for a stomp.
3. D/D doesn’t favour kitten, it works with a condition build and a power crit build. It is not a gimmick because D/D is the most popular weapon set together with S/P, so the design is flawless.
I can’t wait for e-sport patch with ladders and ratings, hopefully it will display on the forum too so I know who I should reply to and who to ignore.

Arena/DM?
I don’t think a Death Match based Arena works in GW2, people die too easy. Maybe with a 50% less damage taken debuff it would be interesting.
CTF?
Might work, sure thing.
However, I would prefer if Arenanet focused on getting a ranking system and dueling in the game first. These are more important than the things you brought up OP :p
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
AoE is very effective against Mesmers! You lack experience if you can’t tell the difference between clones and the real Mesmer. Once you have enough experience you can tell the difference.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Yeah, they only have 14k HP!
It’s not like they have a signet that provides a passive 25% movement speed, the ability to cloak constantly, or a movement skill that completely ignores Cripple, Immobilize and Frozen!
Why don’t you play the Backstab build if you think it is so strong? The truth is that it is not.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)

There is nothing wrong with underwater combat, why should they remove it? Just because a selfish person wants it! hah, keep dreaming.
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)
Some classes dont do anything with just 12345, they need to mix many abilities. On the other hand heartseeker or pistolwhip can be devastating with much less effort. I’m not calling for nerf, is just my point of view.
Your point of view is in direct conflict with Arenanets design for the Thief, if you don’t like it play another game
Alts: Warrior, Necromancer, Mesmer, Elementalist (bunker)

You are responsible for the balancing and you failed. Stop patronizing us, stop talking nonsense and do your job!
show some respect, and appreciate what you DID get. do you have any idea how hard his job is? the game just came out.
Yeah? What did I get?
I paid 59 Euro for a game which claims to be most balanced MMO PvP game there is. I spend my time leveling up a necro which is severly broken in both PvP and endgame PvE due to its lackluster dps. I spend countless hours trying different weapon and skill combinations and nothing is working in a way that I feel I can be of benefit for the team and not better replaced by another profession.
I am aware this game is is relatively new and a proper balancing takes some time and I was planning on giving the designers some time to get it right.
However then I read the post of Mr. Peters. And he is denying that there is a problem with the necro and basically telling people that they just need to learn to play. This means there will be no major balancing changes for the necro. Since I am not interested in playing another professions this means this game will be no fun for me in the foreseeable future.
That is what I got for my 59 Euro. And you think a should be more grateful for that?
You are a bad PvP player, that is the reason for your failure as a Necromancer in PvP. That is the real problem, not the game. I play a Necromancer too, your bluff is called, what will you do now?

Stop crying, I play a Thief, Necromancer and Warrior.
I dominate and destroy 90% of the people I face when I play on my Thief and Necromancer. I LOSE 70% of my fights when I play a Warrior.
Does this mean Thieves and Necromancers are OP and Warriors are weak? Of course not!
This means that I am good at playing Thief and Necromacner, but not good at playing Warrior.
The balance in GW2 is very decent, the problem is not the game but the PLAYERS! Understand this, practice and improve.
Even if you are stubborn enough to disagree, nothing stops you from making the profession you think is OP and playing that. It takes you 3 minuts to do the intro and 5 minuts to get the build.
Arenanet should issue forum bans against bad PvP players that do nothing but cry, if you have a complainment give critical and factual arguments and provide data and sources for your claims.
That is all.

Don’t play a Thief if you don’t like fragile melee professions. A Thief is punished more than other professions if he misses a dodge or an evade ability from D/D or Shortbow.
If you want to charge in and be able to tank some damage, make a Guardian or a defensive Warrior.
