For a game called Guild Wars 2, there doesn’t seem to be much reason to be in a guild.
I’ve been playing since Christmas, and so far, I’ve seen no reason to play in a guild, beyond the “camaraderie” aspect.
There’s no raids, thus no kind of progression (unless you count the Fractals, which are easy enough with a PUG), so that’s out. The whole boon system that comes from being in a guild seems, at best, trivial.So, what real purpose is there to be guilded in the Guild Wars 2?
Guild missions, themed events, WvW, PVP, dungeons, Fractals, map clear, leveling – all are done better with guildmates.
We often do GvG events, and they’re a lot of fun.
You can do some of the above with PUGs too, but running with people who know your playstyle makes the whole experience faster, easier, and more enjoyable. Your game evolves, and you discover more strategies, synergies etc. It just makes your game richer.
It was a lot of fun! And I hear that the Iron Marches challenge is one of the hardest.

That’s not the point. The point is tactics, patience. The Yak’s could’ve killed us anytime. They chose to wait until the right moment.

I’ve been on Dragonbrand since beta, and love the feeling – we have some great people, and a good mix of competitive/casual players. A lot of my friends have moved over here because they enjoyed the whole atmosphere when they guested to DB.
And, we even do drunken raids every Friday

Yak’s Bend is allied with EVERY server BUT SoS. In fact, in the DB/Mag/YB matchup all servers will be convening on middle island in DBBL to do /dance emotes, sing koombaya and bask in the total lack of fighting.

Does SoS still believe YB and DB are allied? I thought we put this silly rumor to rest weeks ago.
But I can say it again, as someone who attends the Dragonbrand Command meetings, and talks to many of our commanders at various times, there is no truce and no alliance of any sort with YB.
But as an aside, if we wanted to form an alliance with another server that would be perfectly legal and fair. ANet has designed WvW with inter-server cooperation in-mind. That is why we have a three server paradigm.
If Dragonbrand ever does do an alliance with another server we will announce it. We would have no reason to hide it. It would be to our advantage to announce it to demoralize the enemy.

New people often pick up this game. New guilds get formed daily. Keep fighting, advertising, and you will bounce back. I’ve seen our server do this before. SoS can do this too.
In my eyes it would continue to reward winning servers and zerg mentality.
It would only reward those that DPS and not those that play more support roles. It wouldn’t reward scouting. It wouldn’t reward defending. It wouldn’t reward repairing structures or building siege. It wouldn’t reward upgrading structures or camps. The reward would be smaller for smaller groups (e.g. 5-mans). It rewards zerg-on-zerg tactics.
This is totally the opposite direction of where most players want wvw to go.
Fair enough. So the criteria could be something other than kills. Maybe a point system:
1. 10 points for successful defense of a structure
2. 1 point per kill
3. 20 points for ugrading a structure
4. 1 point per siege weapon built…Accumulate 100 points, and you qualify for the WvW chest.
well, then you need to add zero or even a small negative points for taking keeps and other objectives without defenders, that’s only fair for servers that dont have tons of coverage.
Zero sounds fair. That’ll remove any “capping” benefits.

Love this idea! This will make the day before reset so interesting! Everyone will gang up on that one keep that never changed colors during a week.
The intention was not to get more rewards, but to fix the foundation (not fully, but contribute to fixing).
The following items could be addressed:
1. Giving lower tier servers something to fight for, and encourage more WvW participation.
2. Making lower tiers more appealing to new players.
3. Having a greater meaning to, say, winning Tier 3, as an example.
4. Giving second and third place tiers enough motivation to fight for their positions (example, again tier 3, it’s hard to dislodge DB due to our strong oceanic presence. What gives a YB/Mag player an incentive to log in and fight for the server week after week? This incentive may bring some more players to WvW)

SoS has become all PvE carebear. Pretty disappointing to be able to have only one BL covered and still be out manned in it during our supposed “prime-time”
I remember how disheartened I felt when we (DB) kept losing week after week. Commanders stopped leading in WvW and started doing Fractals/PVE, a lot of small guilds disintegrated after people lost interest, being crushed week-after-week by large servers.
Over time, a few large guilds chose us as their home. One positive spark led to another, and we slowly bounced back. We’re still weak during NA, and don’t belong to T2, but things might change.
tl;dr: It will take time, and a lot of beatings. But in the end, it will be worth it. You still have many loyal, talented guilds… stick with them. Good luck, SoS!
Advance notice: whiners please stay away. This is not a finished idea by any means, but requires community discussion. Suggestions, positive intent and critique is most welcome.
In order to make weekly victories more meaningful, I’d like to propose a weekly chest to anyone who has contributed towards the WvW outcome for his server (maybe determined by a minimum number of kills). Winners get a Gold chest, Second Place gets a silver, and third place gets a Bronze chest. There need not be a huge difference between the three chests, since it may not be fair to uneven tiers.
Lower tiers get slightly more currency (gold, gems, laurels), but higher tiers get better loot.
The purpose is to make lower tiers more attractive to newcomers, at the same time not penalizing higher tiers for winning. And above all, to give more meaning to “winning” every week in WvW.

This change might put additional burden on servers, and worsen the skill lag. Since instead of a client-side request to open an object on demand, the server will have to grapple with multiple objects (player inventory, loot bag) in real-time, every time a bag gets dropped.
If so, I’d rather have manual looting than more skill lag. Just saying.

We three servers played for 7th, 8th and 9th place in NA this week. Congrats to DB on winning this tier. Congrats to YB for 2nd in this tier.

Edit: Also, if you look at the ppt evolution for DB, you’ll notice that it rarely drops below 200, even during the strongest times for YB. DB day crew has gotten significantly stronger over the past several months. It would take far more than a bit of a night crew for YB to actually beat DB in this matchup.
DB’s NA gets to defend the fully upgraded structures NNK gives them, and is rather infamous among YB players for constantly running away and switching maps when they wipe. In any case most of YB is in pve by this time of week as the outcome cannot be altered. So enjoy your +200 if you think that’s an accomplishment.
YB has at least roughly 8 hours (counting from NA afternoon till NA sleep time) to fully upgrade any structure before an “attack” actually starts. After that your oceanic/SEA gets to defend as well. Also, PPT-wise speaking, changing maps and taking easier stuffs grants you a win in the tier, not that it’s something I agree to do every time, but it’s nevertheless a good way to get points. Don’t tell me you guys never took anything without resistance.
Oh and, please tell YB that are in PvE to come back next week. +0 during SEA time is not fun at all.
Huge difference between NNK upgrading in complete peace and DB NA queueing their own BL whenever a WPed home keep is threatened, and YB NA trying to upgrade against genuine zergs and trying to defend NNK with about 20 pugs, max. But I wasn’t talking about symmetry at all, I was just pointing out that the structures that DB NA inherits makes them appear much stronger PPT-wise than they really are.
I won’t begrudge anyone “taking easier stuff” when the match outcome is still in doubt, but at this time of week we just want to fight, and its just frustrating to see our opponents intentionally seeking pvdoor. I guess I can understand losing your taste for battle after 10 wipes, but after just 1 or 2? Come on.
WvW is a coverage game, to complain or begrudge a server because they have better coverage is pointless. with that said, DB can use additional NA coverage; I think this point has been made week after week. Although, our NA could use more numbers we are doing a fantastic job keeping yaks from closing the gap during their prime time. Our SEA group is great and deserve a ton of credit for our servers successes.
I’m not complaining about coverage, I am arguing against this strange idea that DB NA is doing a “fantastic job.” You are doing approximately what could be expected given your numbers, ours, the structures you inherit from NNK, and the relative lack of a 3rd server.
It may seem strange to you, but having 200PPT during NA hours is pretty dang good for DB, especially against the zergs YB fields during NA prime. Anyone seen SoS lately?
Haha. DB resets every upgrade during EU and has their own ugpraded T3 keeps with WP for NA. YB has to fight a uphill battle with numbers while SoS has to fight a uphill battle with pugs and pvers with no WvW guilds left. DB is taking easy wins because YB/SoS won’t focus on you ALL the time because you have coverage and thats the way game is meant to be played. Instead YB plays for #2 by resetting SoS’s borderland during NA time. It’s not going to get any more even with Maguma coming around if YB doesn’t change strat.
Okay, so what’s the point. Your entire server is elite? We just win because of our coverage? Point taken. I enjoy winning like this. I bought this game so that I can enjoy my time. I don’t have your skill level, so I hide in zergs to win. Happy? Can we stop moaning now?

Where have all the armor/weapon vendors selling Lvl80 exotics for badges gone?
They were in the game a few days back, but I couldn’t find them at the same spot today. Have they been removed? The patch notes don’t say anything about it…
I’ve never seen anyone in NNK let alone a commander laugh on a dead body or do any emotes out of disrespect.
Not that it matters because it’s pixels and children amusing themselves by acting like children but I have yet to see a DB NOT laugh/dance/jump on corpses since last weekend. When matches that are so dull and lopsided go on like this for weeks it seems to bring out the toddler in people who are blobrolling the other servers. Commanders and non-doritos alike, as the enemy blob rolls through masses of emotes flood the chat-box nowadays.
Doesn’t matter much though, matchup is boring at this point. We all know how it’ll end. There’s nothing YB or SoS can do to slow down the DB blob and the week is another experience in deja-vu at this point. /shrug

In any case there will always be a commander who will do certain things when they cap your towers / keeps / garrison or wipe your zerg. I know of a white haired ele DB commander who is part of NNK or BP does the laugh thing above several of our commanders bodies. In response a few of our commanders do the /disagree haha.
I personally don’t do anything – I’m thinking about the next target or talking on comms for strategic placement.
Also – bravo to EA for the SoS BL bay cap late last set – your zerg was relentless on attack. Even though we had seiged up we couldn’t withstand your 4th wave. I was impressed how well your commander adapted to our fluid defense and made quick decisions on what to do. (sorry this is so late – I am either playing a ton of GW, sleeping, or working – not much time to post like this).
Also – there was a bunker engi with whom I was solo fighting against early this set on Friday by hills in one of the BLs. Kudos to you – after 5 mins of fighting we called a truce and bowed we went our own ways (with each of us doing 3 jumps). You are an honorable man with whom I would share a fireside drink.
BP members will never do such a thing, let alone the commander. We conduct ourselves with dignity at all times on the battlefield.

He gave you the right advice. I work and travel all the time, and haven’t had a lot of time to spend on legendary. However, it’s easy to attain gear equivalent to legendary without any grind. I do Fractals level 20 easily, and I’m a casual player.
Just keep enjoying level appropriate content. You don’t have to do everything. You don’t have to grind. You don’t have to farm. Unless you want to.
Tip: don’t read up the forum/guides too much. Too many people whine here.

ArenaNet is a multi-million dollar company and you SERIOUSLY don’t think their developers know a lot more about class balance than their players? It’s their job to do this, we all do it for fun. Of course they have people who play each class, it would be insane to think they don’t. A lot of these changes are made in mind with ALL other changes made to other classes, everyone likes to look at their one class and scream “STOP NERFING US!” but never take it into the big picture.
It’s not like these changes are permanent, they do a lot of things to “test the waters” and see if it works or not. These forums are a mess, crying every patch I swear.

Also, look at Rangers… the Quickness nerf lowered damage output by around 47% (tested by players, accounting for melee pets, etc).Of course, we can assume that you know better about balance than the devs. Just the way you assumed that you’re the only person who’s seen that video.

I would start with Rangers first, as it’s a bit disgusting how much they neglect the class as a whole. For one, I would not rely on pets to define the class, the skill balances were far superior in GW1 just due to the simple fact that you had the option to remove that pet, and not revolve your DPS around it. This being said, Rangers in GW1 were STILL nerfed to near pointless levels in PvE.

For one, I would not rely on pets to define the class, the skill balances were far superior in GW1 just due to the simple fact that you had the option to remove that pet, and not revolve your DPS around it. This being said, Rangers in GW1 were STILL nerfed to near pointless levels in PvE.
Izzy doesn’t know what he’s doing, Izzy does not PvP. He plays a zerker babby 4sig warrior in PvE. I have grouped with him before and have even asked him to change his build, he refused.

Do people seriously think that developers don’t play Engineer at all? ArenaNet is a multi-million dollar company and you SERIOUSLY don’t think their developers know a lot more about class balance than their players? It’s their job to do this, we all do it for fun. Of course they have people who play each class, it would be insane to think they don’t. A lot of these changes are made in mind with ALL other changes made to other classes, everyone likes to look at their one class and scream “STOP NERFING US!” but never take it into the big picture.
It’s not like these changes are permanent, they do a lot of things to “test the waters” and see if it works or not. These forums are a mess, crying every patch I swear.

And devs hate engineers in particular, because they don’t want people to play the class. The class just happened to be there, devs never wanted it. That’s the reason why they never play it themselves. They just make random changes to classes, because they get kicks out of it. Of course, Engineers always get burnt by Dev RNG, because devs like the other seven classes better.

They’re lumping pve and pvp together, which just shouldn’t be the class. For the sake of nerfing them in pvp they literally stomped on MANY Engineer pve builds. Also, look at Rangers… the Quickness nerf lowered damage output by around 47% (tested by players, accounting for melee pets, etc).
Of course, we can assume that you know better about balance than the devs. Just the way you assumed that you’re the only person who’s seen that video.

Since I took notes and created a thread on the topic, I think you can have my assurances that I watched it. To me it’s astonishing that that State of the Game wasn’t wonderful to hear from everyone. I loved the Engineer discussion and am very optimistic of the Engineer future because of it. The patch only gave me more evidence to support my optimistic impression.
The previous Kit Refinement change was terrible, and I talked about it back then too. The rest of the changes at the time were wonderful though. We all talked about how Kit Refinement should’ve been nerfed in a different way, and what did they do? They did pretty much exactly what we all discussed back then. They nerfed it and took the internal cooldowns on top of internal cooldowns away to simplify it.
The assumption they didn’t play Engineers with Kit Refinement to me is absurd. The assumption they lack QA testing is absurd as well. It adds nothing to the argument at hand. If you want to discuss how much you disagree with the changes, that’s great. That’s real discussion and there are points to be made on both sides. Assumptions that are inflammatory and boil down to “the devs are bad at their job” add absolutely nothing to the discussion and only serve to remove any good discussion that was around. Why should a dev read a thread that is essentially nothing but “you should be fired” from what is very likely someone who has no industry knowledge at all? There are ways to discuss all this, and even if I disagree with you there are good points in what is brought up. The way it’s brought about now though accomplishes almost nothing.

Honestly, though, how are the open field fights from YB, Dragonbrand? Are they anything close to FA’s? If so, I can’t wait. I know that YB seems to dominate NA primetime, and now that Mag has lost its fairweather players, we’ll probably get stomped then, too, but I just want good fights.
My take on YB (and my sample size might be skewed, others may have different opinions) – they’re excellent defenders. They make great use of the terrain, and have been fearless in most of our encounters.
Open field, um… I don’t know because we usually routed them when we had superior numbers, and got routed when they did. So I can’t comment on whose tactics are superior. It’s silly to generalize anyway, because all servers have their share of good/bad players.
On thing is for sure – they belong. It will be a fun fight when/if you move to T3.

We all play for our own reasons. I have played PPT wars, I have soloed, run with small groups and even been in massive zergs, all can be fun in their own way.
