Since Aurene is still technically a dragon – even if she isn’t an Elder Dragon (Yet. give her a few thousand years, she’ll grow into it.) – and The Commander is her chosen defender, does this technically make The Commander a Dragon Champion?

Also, Dragons Watch is technically living up to it’s namesake now. Just some odd thoughts that occurred to me.

Carlin Sanders.3587

I didn’t think of HTTYD until people started attempting to make a connection between the two. I still don’t see a connection other than there being a dragon. There are plenty of movies with dragons.

Put a picture of Toothless next to a picture of Aurene. The similarities are obvious: big eyes, wide mouth, same head shape. I’ve only ever seen part of HTTYD and the usual online stuff of Toothless, but that’s the first thing that popped into my mind when Aurene popped out of her egg.

I’m not seeing them but that’s not to say that you don’t.

Are we sure it’s a dragon? Looks like a dog to me.

[Spoiler] Marjory

in Living World

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

Did anyone else have a WTF moment when Marjory spoke her mind? I wanted to hit her with my greatsword so bad. What’s got her attitudinal?!

Definitely. A lot of folks are theorizing that (a) she’s focused on bringing Belinda back to life (and is blind to any reason this might be a bad idea) and/or (b) Lazarus is influencing her to make “poor life choices”. (Or in this case: poor death choices.)

It seemed out of character for her not to defer to “the boss” on something like this, which is directly related to the mission of Dragons’s’s’s Watch [sic]/

I definitely think this is a case of A rather than B, as Lazarus has proper motive to play ball for now. Moreover this may also be a case of Professional interest – she wants to bring her sister back but one also has to remember that she’s also a necromancer, and necromancers are often extremely curious individuals. it’s a lot like an astrophysicist in our world suddenly having the opportunity to study a black hole safely inside and out – they’ll want to sate their professional curiosity.

she might possibly take up an odd apprentice roll with Lazarus (a former necromancer himself who likely still knows old world spells) a little like how Livia from guild wars 1 was apprenticed to Gadd. A combination one would never have expected – a human apprenticed to an asura – but it happened nonetheless. I myself often find similarities between Livia and Marjory in terms of personality, so it seems likely to me.

but that’s just my two cents.

Commander has a big mouth!

in Living World

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

not necessarily true. remember that while he has a lot of magic, that also means his magic can be inverted by the countermagic the Commander has learned. Who created the counter magic? Zinn – who got it from the Seers and their defensive magic negating Mursaat magic. Moreover he can’t hold that much magic forever – eventually he go from ‘overcharged’ to ‘normal’ which would mean the commander is more than a match.

Think about this. As the commander you have not only fought off a dragon champion solo but even killed one off. Moreover who’s to say you’re completely normal either – what with your connection to Aurene as well as some tampering by powerful magical anomalies here and there (Remember Omadd’s machine? Who’s to say it doesn’t have some subtle lasting effects.)

so no, actually, the best candidate for taking on Lazarus is The Commander and he very likely could. (And don’t give me that excuse about when lazarus first appeared. The devs just didn’t want you to mess up the scene by doing something stupid during the cutscene. Anyone who has played Skyrim long enough knows what i’m talking about.)

Lazarus's deception (spoilers)

in Living World

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

I agree that the barrier failing was likely either a technical error (Where’s a good magitech repair man when you need him?) or caused by Aurene somehow.

We need to keep something in mind when it comes to Lazarus – his race was at war with the elder dragons long before humans have been around. Moreover his race opted to hide when it was evident that the ‘elder races’ couldn’t work together to defeat the dragons and that – no matter their power or technology – zhaitan’s armies could not be defeated let alone the death dragon himself. (Risen mursaat and jotun, heh.)

go forward thousands of years later on their latest rise here comes this one individual who manages to not only unite the races/factions together to defeat an elder dragon but does so twice – with the second kill being accomplished with only a few skilled individuals. If I were Lazarus i’d find this very interesting. What allows this one seemingly weaker individual able to perform seemingly impossible feats – feats that his own race failed to accomplish miserably?

On another point with Lazarus, playing ball with the commander for now allows him to eliminate a greater threat to any future plans he has – the elder dragons. He can’t exactly plan his next move when everything on the face of the earth is being wiped out now, can he? He’s currently (re)living in a time where mortals can finally go on the offense and wipe out the elder dragons for good, and if Lazarus participates he can speed things along that much quicker.

lastly despite the enormous amount of magic he absorbed from the broken bloodstone his magic is still considered ‘Mursaat Magic’ and can be countered by the countermagic the Commander knows. (The countermagic was an invention of Zinn, who refined it from the technique the Seers used to create spectral infusion which negates Mursaat Magic) we have seen this dozens of times in bloodstone fen. Supercharged jade armors still having their own spectral agony turned against them, reversing the flow of magic from bloodstone shards. the point being that, despite his enormous boost in strength, the commander is very capable of turning that against him. Plus he won’t be able to keep all that magic forever – eventually he’ll revert to his normal strength in time.

all in all even if he wanted to do otherwise, he needs to play ball with the commander until the elder dragons are dealt with. (Imagine the situation of Thor and Loki from Thor: The Dark World. That kind of situation, but with Lazarus and The Commander.)

One last thing i’d like to point out. How the races would react if they ever discover that The Commander is teaming up with The White Mantle lead by a Mursaat? (the humans and charr specifically come to mind.) just some food for thought.

Carlin Sanders.3587

I also agree that there should have been some dialogue towards Aurene. I wonder how fast dragons grow and how long before they can speak.

Also, as a herald, I got some real goosebumps channeling Glint herself to defend her baby. Fact of Chaos had a very “get off my baby!” feel. I’m curious to know how “present” a revenant’s legend is. That is: if I’m channeling Glint is she, in the mists, aware of what’s going on around me? Does she know that her child was born? I wonder if a revenant and their legend can have a direct conversation.

It has been stated by a dev someplace that revenants do in fact ‘commune’ with the legend in a way, which is how they can borrow said powers. so it’s likely that, yes, through revenants channeling her she knows her daughter is born.

I’d actually like to see a hydra return but as more of a ‘world boss’ for that map instance. (It would be nice to get an actual new world boss)

Jade armors became champion level, colossal and requires several dozen people to kill (or one pact commander and a BACKSTABBING TRAITOROUS-ahem, sylvari thief) so why not do the same with hydras? it’d be fun to fight a tyrannosaurus with a dozen heads the size of a small mountain.

Head: Bloodstone Crown
Shoulders: Scarlet’s Spaulders
Chest: Stag Mail
Arms: Scarlet’s Grasp
Leggings: Grasping Dead Leggards
Feet: Mistward Warboots
Backpiece: Blood Ruby Backpack

Color scheme:
Red = Ruby
Light black=Black Dye
Dark Black=Shadow Abyss

Goes great with the bloodstone weapons, it’s fun to have on my revenant!

Something you could do is simply sell eternity and use the money to get another legendary you may be interested in, or use it for – say – one of those perma bank access contracts or nodes for you home instance. perhaps even just sell the legendary and use the gold to create full ascended gear for your alts (if not already specced) or even make ones set for a joke character – one you just have fun with without really being made for efficiency or stuff like that.

You can also trade the gold in for gems to save for a later date.

Bonus Stats for Legendaries in Open World PvE

The only change i would want to Legendary weapons is to have them have some sort of surprise dialogue when interacting with certain NPC’s (Such as Moda The Quick giving you Kudos for bearing The Nevermore if you have that skin unlocked. or perhaps NPC’s in Rata Sum remarking on HOPE at random intervals. things that have some relevance to the NPC’s.) Obviously not all Legendaries will have this perk, but it would be a nice Cosmetic addition to give recognition for your achievement.

Masteries [suggestion]

Carlin Sanders.3587

An idea i’d like to see explored is Racial masteries. It always bothered me how separate you become from your racial origins and how little impact your choice of race had on your pve life, so perhaps a mastery that unlocks benefits for your characters chosen race? things like:

-Unlocking minor activities, such as perhaps a 1v1 training arena in the black citadel for Charr characters or getting into drinking contests as a norn

-Unique Dialogue responses and choices from NPC’s of a certain race or faction, such as more in depth dialogue with your chosen patron deity’s priest(ess) as a human or ‘talking shop’ with members of your college as an asura (mainly for those who like immersion/roleplaying)

-Slightly improved racial abilities – add in small buffs to your current racial abilities, such as minor utilities when you ‘become the (insert animal here)’ or to make your summoned golem/power suit doubled in duration (elite becomes disabled while it’s out and only starts its recharge countdown after its death. switching elites also kills it.)

-Home turf advantage: While in certain areas belonging to your homeland you gain a boost (such as perhaps karma, given that you’re better known in those lands, or Experience. maybe a minor speed buff?)

Just my two cents.

Utility skill type: Echoes (shouts that have a small immediate benefit with a more powerful delayed benefit afterward)

Just my two cents.

Lokier Frostcurse – an ex son of svanir who was lost in the mists during my other norns PS. (said norn is named Helen. those who know your mythology should be able to guess their relationship to each other.)

I did this due to a few reasons why norn should be revenant, but also that the sword main hand and axe off hand both had attacks that chilled – fitting the theme. add on the hammer #3 skill also chilling and that’s how i came up with the idea – especially since with herald he can still call upon ‘dragon’ as it were, just not jormag specifically.

To complete it i even got jormags breath and frostfang for him to use. (entrophy as a hammer skin since he’ll have gotten a ‘trophy’ from wandering into the fractals one time while trying to find a way out. them cultists hate him.)

Also a name i found hysterical (i forget who posted it) – an asura named ‘small medium at large’

Taking Grind to a whole new Level

Carlin Sanders.3587

the amount of salt i sense from this thread could drain every user in this thread dry.

seriously, this idea of ascended and legendary gear ‘grind’ has been beaten to death already. beating the HoT area completely is nothing new – this is a simplified version of World Completion. You make it a grind when you actively seek out the item rather than getting it through passive collection. by the time i decided to get a legendary i had enough karma to buy about 500 obsidian shards because i focused on other things, to say nothing of gold or other legendary crafting materials. just because it’s there doesn’t necessarily mean you HAVE to do it right now. I get some people have the completionist mentality (which is fruitlessly served and an arduous torture if you play an MMO due to updates) but that need to complete can be directed elsewhere for the time being, such as doing the requirements for every precursor and collecting each of the ones you want first.

and don’t give me that BS about ascended or bust to be competitive. Exotic gear is stupid easy to get these days with how common exotic materials are nowadays, and that’s only a tier lower. if you can’t live with exotic gear then the fault lies in your mentality more than the system.

HoT discount for veteran players?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

Personally i think the solution is rather easy: give existing players the option to convert their extra game copy into gems or to gift it.

since the game is apparently kitten value, allow players the chance to turn it into $50 of gems. (have this done by an in-game npc to prevent people buying it for the first time from accidentally turning their game into currency they can’t use) so that this way you’re either: A – buying HoT and you get 4000 gems free, or B – You’re Buying $50 of gems and you are also getting HoT free. either way this is a good solution. you have the means to get a character slot in addition to anything else you’d like, and people who already have another character slot wont get jipped. (since the base game is apparently ‘free with purchase’ it won’t hurt Anets profits in any way) and this also makes Ultimate more appealing given the $100 in-game value, HoT + Swag

the one down side would be a rather immediate economy crash if people decide to convert gems to gold, but meh. Anets dealt with in-game economy emergencies before.

Can we kill Trahearne already?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

eh, trehearne was okay if you played a sylvari, as his presence later on made sense and could also be looked on as a sort of brotherly companionship. he should have been introduced to the other race PS’s just as early i think.

although shooting at random trees and performing a hail mary on mordremoth so early in the game was a completely stupid move tactically. He knew Zhaitan from the tip of his tail to the edge of each fang so he was prepared, but he had been so used to Zhaitans methods that he tried to use similar tactics and mordremoth is a completely different and unknown beast. he should have relied more on the observations of mordremoth’s ‘trehearne’, the commander. or at least scouted ahead of the path before flying in.

i think at least he should step down from trying to be a field commander and leave that to the expert in that field – THE commander. he’s better with a pen anyway.

"DragonHunter" name feedback [merged]

Carlin Sanders.3587

simple solution: Petition for a rename of the guardian spec and add possible names. vote on the best choice.

as for the mechanics involved with the guardian spec honestly you were all warned: specializations were a take on secondary professions that expanded the (insert profession here)‘s depth. chronomancer can be taken as, in gw1 terms, a Me/Ne. Dragonhunter can be termed Mo/Ra. this is, however, not going to be your only option. I imagine they will perform other mixes as they make more specializations. Perhaps we’ll see a double shield guardian by mixing warrior in. or a guardian dual wielding swords with thief traits.

all in all if you don’t like it then don’t use it. wait for the next specialization to come. I’m at least taking the special for the bow – the scepter drags as a long range weapon. :/

Carlin Sanders.3587

personally i think people will be thinking ‘oh my god MAIN a bow? plz no thx.’ when the point of the bow is to provide specialization. you can be a complete back row supporter with staff as a primary weapon or you can be an all-range attacker with a melee weapon equipped in the other. remember you still have access to all of the other skills, so you can just ignore the new skills and/or traits if you want and just use the kitten bow for those pesky range fighters.

Dragon hunter i thought was a strange title as well until i remembered something: The specialization was born out of a need to be specifically potent to elder dragons and their minions, hence the name dragon hunter. They deal specifically with the largest threat to tyria, dragons. I imagine they would be far less potent against more natural enemies compared to (let’s say next spec is Phanlanx with double shields) other specs for more local defending and hero duty.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Carlin Sanders.3587

Carlin Sanders.3587

i imagine it comes down to the fact that Trehearne tried to take on mordremoth in the same fashion of zhaitan, which of course will not work.

each dragon behaves very differently from the other, so a new approach of attack is needed for each one. Trehearne was an expert on Zhaitan and his minions, the player character is the ‘expert’ on mordremoth and its minions.

in short trehearne was attempting a hail-mary too soon, and now we see the results of his shortsightedness.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

I’m guessing it’s purely an issue that they have been unable to make a decent looking cape fit all models and work properly on the lowest level machines that can run the game. Likely an indirect issue of still being anchored to DX9.

Again (for the couple dozenth time), WHY does this have ANYTHING to do with HoT?

i know they asked the original GW1 team how they did capes (apparently they did it right but never talked) but i can imagine some of the hilarity in their own experiments.

I imagine a cape flapping around like a pigeon in hysterics trapped inside it being the result of one experiment.

i think if they do legendary armor it should be as a whole set (say ‘Chest of The Betrayer’s armor’ – account bound on acquire) and i’d like them to be worth the deal, apart from stat selection. (say, Shiro’s armor model for heavies and Antons for mediums for example. as previously suggested other themes work as well, like shatterer giving a similar effect on the waerer like zodiac does – changing the skin to electric purple energy.)

Most likely they’ll work on Legendary trinkets first though, given we’ve already seen their experiments into trinkets giving additional special effects.
