Interesting, seems like Masteries are mostly just a disguised “attunment” system.
Raid attunements were always the worst part of raids, sad to see them making a comeback into GW2. Locking content behind attunment walls just leaves people behind, and separates players into two groups.
They will eventually be nerfed because group one will quickly obtain the attunments and think the content is too easy, while group two will be composed of mostly casuals who can not complete the content and complain it must be nerfed.
and suppose certain levels are easy to get? for instance the lost coins/badges achievement was really easy to blast through the first few tiers, and then had a steady pace afterward. i imagine the racial masteries will be similar, with people getting to the middle ground while the more dedicated will actually reach the end. (not necessarily hardcore, casual players can just dedicate to one line for a while if they wanted to.)
Exalted – the artist formerly known as Mursaat. XD (my friends comment btw)
A mastery point is a mastery point. You don’t advance specific lines, you just earn points and then spend them on whatever you want. Dulfy’s write up has the number of points needed for each line.
For example you will need to have 8 mastery points invested in to the Exalted faction in order to be able to damage boss Morden. This means that until you invest those 8 mastery points you absolutely can not progress and kill certain things in the expansion.
For the Itzel faction, you will need to invest an impressive 39 mastery points in order to pull down Wyverns from the sky to fight. This means that at least one person in a group MUST have this if the group wants to fight a Wyvern. What this means is that this will become a requirement to join groups, because if you don’t have it then you will be considered a “noob” not worth carrying.
It could work out to be ok if mastery points are easy to get, or they are only needed for a few open world encounters. But if they are tied to any new dungeons/raids/story content, then I suspect they will become a problem.
given how mastery points will be tied over exp i’d say its safe to assume we’ll get plenty. SW has tons of events where we can just roam for exp. and my main discussion was regarding actually upping the specific masteries – roaming for glyphs and sigils and whatnot similar to lost coins – not to mention since it’s account bound, so it’s not like you need to grind every character to get to that level (like in GW1 and title tracks.)
even i’m sick of hearing this whine about ‘this isn’t GW1’ and ‘why can’t we have X like in GW1’ and i’ve been around since prophecies. This isn’t the tyria you remember. a lot can change over 200 years. 200 years ago we didn’t have computers, internet, or any of the nice stuff we take for granted today.
Pretty much everyone i left with in guild wars didn’t like the next game when they heard it would be 200 years later because that meant leaving their characters behind. it meant getting to know a completely new and alien system, one that was drastically different from the first game. Anet wanted to try something new – some have succeeded while others have failed – but they have done their job pretty well i’d say.
but that doesn’t mean ‘leave the old game completely behind.’ a lot of the stuff you are seeing was inspired by the first game – specializations as a spin on dual classes, strongholds being a spin off of GvG, and so much more. so all in all, i’d say it’s time to either move on or stay in GW1.
TL;DR this is not GW1. This is a sequel in a changed tyria, where a lot happened in a short span of time. DWI
ah, good to know. thank you.
My evil plan is one step closer to fruition >:D
it could be worse. the event could take gold and items away from you.
the cynic is strong with this one.
If i were to transmute a legendary – say, Quip into Chaos Gun – would it retain the ability to switch stats on the fly?
(“why would you even want to transmute quip?!” because i like having a switchable insignia on a pistol, not necessarily the skin/effects.)
My guess is that the name ‘Exalted’ was used for the Mursaat in order to prevent spoilers about the story and the presence of the Mursaat in it.
or they could be trying to disassociate with the name ‘Mursaat’ due to its negative meaning with travelers.

huh. interesting. so precursors are now tiers. i also like the racial lines as well, very interesting
personally i found that i began to like each class after playing with just about every skill – weapon, utility and otherwise – and tinkering with it until i got something that i could be happy with. for instance i found that i had a good bit of fun with a wells necro and dual daggers when i tried making a ‘vampire’ build – the #2 skill basically becoming as good as my utility heal skill. so i say try working outside the norm of what is expected of the class. yes you’re a mesmer, doesn’t mean you can’t charge into battle next to a warrior or a thief. yes you’re a warrior, doesn’t mean you can’t decide to simply be an armored marksman by using range weapons only.
maybe a ‘misc’ collection tab is in order? for any crafting/forge materials that really don’t fit anywhere else.
Lions Arch is also free from the influence of any one government or race, remember that. They also have different, oftentimes more lax, laws regarding trade as well. their jail system also provides indentured servants and workers, such as Canach. there are many reasons that lions arch should be rebuilt, most revolving around one thing – money.
Revenant Using Jugg legendary question

I’m more interested in the graphical effects when a revenant uses ‘embrace the demon’ on mallyx while holding the juggernaut.
i myself am doing celestial for a ‘one size fits all’ deal, not to mention the ascended trinkets fit in quite well with the theme. (celestial sigil = guild halls, mursaat token=new allies)
You can chose to say returning from a long absence after being buried alive doesn’t make you nessarily dead or a reanimated corpse if you want .. You can rationalize the meaning and definition of the word to be whatever you wish, it doesn’t change the fact of the true meaning of the word …
There is the true meaning of the word, and then there is how the game describes it.
I’d like you to point out specifically where the description of the Guild wars 2 class ‘Revenant’ says that Revenants are members of the living dead.
no dueling as far as i’ve heard. only strongholds and a new borderlands map.
How do you want to unlock Specializations?

I think a quest it best. Nothing too fancy, but maybe a matter of “find trainer, complete a rite of passage style instance”
The instanced approach would serve as a basic tutorial to whatever mechanical changes come with the spec and perhaps provide the player with a blue or rare weapon that is granted by the spec to get them started.
One of the best ideas on this.
i like this as well. or, say you hit level 80 you get a quest based on your characters own thoughts on how they can ‘improve their skills’ and go on a personal quest, a little bit like how rytlock went on a quest and came out a revenant.
honestly revenant is not an undead class. it’s a class that channels the echoes of legends and takes on their persona. necromancer is more of an undead class than revenant due to their access to lich form.
This is not World of Warcraft. and no, despite what old world legends say the actual game information does not state it is an undead class. does everyone consider Rytlock to be undead? no, he’s just been traveling the mists and came back with the ability to call upon it. (he’s far too stubborn to let any horror the mists create kill him that easy.
)
Love the tonic of this in GW1 so I’m looking forward to this one. Bring us the other 4 human gods while at it (and a new Kormir one).
not kormir. having her take credit for our work was bad enough. :/
EDIT: on topic i do agree about wishing this was an armor skin. i would love to mix a piece from each of the gods for my human character. So far we have grenths hood, heavenly bracers of dwayna, the chaos of lyssa, i would take the shoulders from this outfit for balthazar and maybe keep melandru’s gaze as a main weapon. (obviously I refuse to acknowledge Kormir)
Though i hope they bring back the Soulbreaker as like a greatsword skin or something. that was one of the better, simpler scythe skins and had a neat backstory.
(it has never left my dervish’ weapon slots)
(edited by Carlin Sanders.3587)
you can’t even jump with tonics, much less glide.
you can fall off a cliff with tonics. then press space.
i like this idea. maybe add some ‘unique’ options per guild hall (all are on par, but fitting for the flavor of the guild hall)
Say you get a charr war factory for a guild hall. add in a small table to ‘make weapons’ for the legions, earning some influence for the guild. For an asura-style guild hall it could be you ‘perform research’ for influence. same result, but flavor fitting.

Something doesn’t seem right here…
You wear what you kill.
That’s true. i suppose the stranger thing should be an asura wearing balthazar armor.

“Yeah. He’s afraid of heights.”
“How did he get that rank again?”
“Good question.”

The book never went into an itemization of what DE killed, but you would need to assume they also killed critters, grubs, oakhearts, etc.
for some reason after reading your post it makes me want a ‘rabbit slayer’ title.
Hypothetical: The last elder dragon has been slain. how would these questions be answered.
1 – What function would the vigil serve, if at all, after the last elder dragon has been slain? their primary focus has been defeating elder dragons so what happens when there are no more? do they disband? serve as a ‘keeper of the peace’ force? what are your ideas?
2 – on that same thought, what would become of the pact? would it simply be disbanded, given no further need for the three orders to cooperate? would they keep together as a similar idea for ‘peacekeeping’ as above?
3 – finally, what fate would befall Orr? would Kryta try to reclaim it on the grounds that it was a human kingdom? would the sylvari claim it due to trehearne’s act of cleansing it, and thusly restoring it? would it be the custody of the pact, and if so, what would they do with it?
just questions i’ve been thinking about.
personally i mark such levels by the banners around the profile. if the player character was given such a banner (like an encounter opponent) i imagine they’d have either Champion (gold) or Legendary (purple) whereas Rox, Braham and such would be Elite (silver), though Taimi only gets Veteran (copper) due to her lack of actual experience. The player character has been through a lot and has overcome many challenging opponents and trials, and recently has managed to defeat a Dragon Champion on their own (relatively) which is more than can be said for members of DE. Destiny’s Edge members needed more than one person to take down a Dragon Champion, all needing to work together. The only help the player character needed at this point was just the Divine Fire which – were it in their possession and not Rox’s when the champion attacked – they would have been able to finish the fight completely on their own.
In conclusion i’d say that the player character is definitely on par with DE, and is slowly rising to be stronger. it was even said by them after the vision of the Eternal Alchemy – “I saw how Tyria is woven, and…I’m tied up in it. Somehow.”
i’m making mine human, and i may base his armor on the Avatar of Balthazar or use primeval. i’m remaining open to any new armor skins that may come out between now and HoT release.
Yes add two-handed Great-Axe please and well try to pretend that it’s not exactly like the greatsword fundamentally as far as skills and usage are concerned. Or, much like the Slingshot, just make it as a skin and flag it as a Great sword, since, mechanically, the would be absolutely identical. Mmkay thank. This is kinds like the ’give Rangers Pistols and/or rifles nonsense that comes up every two weeks tbh.
is the sword exactly like the axe? i didn’t realize you could interchange swords and axes and play exactly the same way.
sarcasm
regardless i would think they’d put in enough differences to make it noticeable.
i’m also thinking the dude we see on the HoT page will be the ‘mascot’ for revenants. you don’t see Eir as the ranger or Zojja as the elementalist mascot do you? so I doubt they’ll put Rytlock as the mascot, despite his ‘being the first.’
i imagine that, similar to revenants filling in the ‘missing gap’ for soldier professions that great-axes may be added in the next expansion for professions. the problem is, who will be using it apart from warrior?
Well I could see a necro rocking the whole executioner theme (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Executioner_Axe_Toy)
We even have the title to fit that role.
I can totally see that as a norn with a twisted sense of humor too. he beheads his opponents, keeping their heads to mount on his wall and reanimates the bodies to act as distractions. whenever he’s ‘out hunting’ it’s not always game he’s after…

a better question is how revenants will act under certain story or consumable skill changes, like the Avatar of Balthazar transformation during “The Ghost Rite”
I imagine ‘embrace the demon’ while under this trans would look pretty freaky.
On the trait acquisition rework for HoT

Highly unlikely we’ll see refunds for gold spent. Nor should we, imo. They didn’t refund trait books when they phased those out either. So, in a sense, the precedent is already set.
it would still be hysterical to receive a letter in the mail ‘regarding the lawsuit against skill trainers worldwide’

no, they stated in several interviews now that specializations are changeable, as there will be more than 1.

I dunno, maybe they could take another leaf from gw1 and make it so the ‘profession trainers’ were scamming players for their gold and have been ‘appropriately punished’, refunding gold spent on traits. similar to the one forgotten who kept extorting players for gems.
Poll - Revenant weapons and utilities

Pretty much what Gulesave said, but i imagine they’ll add the ability to slot in racials for your currently equipped legends so that racials aren’t left out. (it’ll be very strange to see charr-mallyx pulling out a pistol but why the fudge not? also, heretical for mallyx-human to call on dwayna for help, lul.)
although a jalis-human with a pair of balthazar hounds would be cool. sort of a lord of war persona there.
i think seeing them again in Tower of Nightmares was enough.
I’ve been Mallix as long as I can remember!
and you’re the 6th i’ve seen in gaming in the last year. not new.
Maybe all 6 were me
nah, ’cause one of them lives down the street from me.
i think it would corrupt into any random condition, anything from bleed to fear. maybe even something like frozen/petrify.
I’ve been Mallix as long as I can remember!

personally i view taunt – not only as a reverse fear (will be hysterical across a cliff in wvw) – but also a way to give other non-necro classes a reliable CC/interrupt. not to mention in pvp situations it may be similar to mesmer misdirections in that it also changes the focus of your target from your current to the taunter, wasting precious seconds to take down someone close to death before they can recover. (warrior about to KO with a kill shot is taunted to someone with a reflect up. ouch.)
most likely the greatest duration of taunt will be something like 2 seconds with every extension modifier applied – also similar to fear.
TL;DR – taunt is basically reverse-fear given to non-necros for similar tactical opportunities.
Aren’t we all forgetting a REAL legend?
I nominate Magni The Bison as a legend for revenants to channel!
my thoughts as well, with me going either Soldier (so i can use utilities to change to power, precision or condition damage) or Celestial (to cover all bases)
Rune of the revenant:
+25 swag
when using a heal skill, you and your target play blindfold darts. the loser is downed instantly
+50 swag
when using an elite skill, Rytlock Brimstone appears and lays down a Super Adventure Box for everyone to play in
+100 swag
when downed, you are instantly revived but now have all your gear permanently tagged with Arenanet logos. you also have ‘loser’ etched on your chestplate.
Would be funny if we could channel Kormir to steal skills from other players (y’know, being as she liked to steal our hard earned godhood and all)
#noonelikesyoukormir
LOVING the Mallyx legend look on charr – please tell me we can get that look as an armor skin set – heck, I wouldn’t care if it was only available as a legendary armor skin and took forever to make. I want it. It’s frikkin’ amazing. PLEASE Anet. Make it happen :-D
The black armor is the same skin they’re using on Rytlock and all the revenants in the blog post/interviews. The purple/redish aura around the character is possibly using the Malyx avatar skill if GW1 is anything to go by. That’s how the avatar skills worked in GW1, at least somewhat.
Sweet, thanks for the clarification!
Does anyone know if that form of Mallyx the Unyielding on that Charr is temporary, like an elite skill? Or something more permanent like an engineer’s sort of toolbelt/kit skill? Because I would love to look like that Charr all day long, rather than just 30 seconds like an elite skill (which I fear may be the case, but I hope I’m wrong).
it was explained that it’s an upkeep skill – so long as you have the energy to maintain it you can keep it on.
-snip-
Didn’t they already show the stealth dashing and attacking skill in the HoT reveal trailer?
Shiro Confirmed
well, either shiro or the assassin who helped bring him down – Vizu (i wouldn’t be surprised if both are added as legends.)
That just made me realize – perhaps additional legends are unlocked via skill points like utilities. In fact, that would be the replacement for utility purchases and whatnot. each one comes with 3 utilities and an elite, each unique to them, and would give a changed effect on the healing skills.
the revenant, to me at least, sounds far more like a gw1 character thrown into our world than simply a mix of classes. he has an energy bar, upkeep skills(monk skills primarily), has four pips of energy regen (so far) on top of Avatars (a dervish thing) and Channeling (ritualist) among god knows what else.
if anything i might make the story about how its my ritualist from GW1 who got lost in the mists and learned awesome warrior skills from rytlock in exchange for teaching him ‘mist voodoo.’ But then took a wrong turn on his way out of the mists and killed my main character before he could start his journey to stop zhaitan and whatnot, thus now he has to do it instead.

It may be just a ‘beta’ thing, but i happen to notice no weapon switch option on the revenant skill bar. does this indicate revenants won’t be able to switch weapons? It makes sense if yes, given that we have one medium armor with only one weapon [engineer] and one light armor [elementalist] since revenant would complete this list – not to mention would make revenant more powerful than intended if they could have more than one weapon set. (i mean, having a second 1-5 bar AND a second 6-0 bar? just a teensy bit OP with the right build.)
