So I came across the following MMO news video on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kk1ZQbo7OK0
The TL:DR version is that it seems Rift and Wildstar are implementing similar wardrobe systems to GW2. I felt this was a nice story since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Who knows maybe they’ll have some nice ideas of their own that GW2 can then borrow.
To my knowledge it is very difficult to bleed, poison, confuse or torment a piece of wood/masonry.
Burning I’ll give you, but that’s about it.
But I use acidic poisons!
The last time I saw walls bleeding, there was a disembodied voice bellowing “Get out!”
Ah so you admit it is possible :P
They should just have a new condition called Decay and it acts like bleed but for objects.
So when you apply condition that damages over time on the object, it automatically changes to Decay.
Yeah if realism is the issue then they simply need to do something like this.
Have you tried the Triple Trouble Wurm or the updated Tequatl?
They are both very easy compared to WoW heroic raid bosses.
The only thing that makes them feel hard to some is the fact that its open world and you cannot pick the people you have with you. So you get a broad range from terrible players to good players. And people who afk/troll/leech.Wat? I tried wow with a friend and it was a snore fest…seriously? All those plugin that tell you everything…blizzard actually built encounters knowing there will be plugins…
WoW encounters are the definition of rote. I’ll agree GW2 doesn’t have any really difficult encounters, but going the WoW way is not the way to go. I’d prefer a more dynamic encounter myself.
Dark stuff! How dark will (can) it get?

Vantablack?
Oh metaphorically dark. Not sure how you’d make gameplay darker though… we’d probably just see more creepy locations and people dying.
Ehhh I remember doing Lich King 10 man with my guild back in the day… tactics weren’t complicated they were just pointless drawn out, with little room for failure…. Back then I was doing ICC for 3-4 hours 2 or 3 time a week… which frankly was extremely casual compared to some other players. I don’t miss that kind thing
While the charr are for sure a very war-focus species, they also have people that work behind the front-lines, for example craftsmen and farmers. the Farmers have a surname and don’t seem to have a negative image, so Iconsider them as members of a warband that not directly involved in the war.
Looking at the short story for Rox it seems that her warband was specifically tasked with mining. So warbands do more than fighting. They’d probably also have farming warbands.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rox%27s_Tale
The charr were going a bit farther than “just retaking their land”. Beyond the fantasy equivalent of using a WMD
You mean like how America dropped a couple of nukes on Japan?! Even a cursory review of history shows that any horrible act can easily be glossed over.
GW2 also glosses over the fact that charr enslaved humans, cooked prisoners alive both for sacrifice and for eating, and enjoyed throwing them into pits unarmed against giant devourers.
Except for the giant scorpions you’re basically in part or in whole describing human history right now.
By comparison the Ascalonians’ approach of killing them like animals and occasionally wearing their skins seems almost justified. 4
I guess we have a different moral system. I don’t believe that that the immoral actions of others justifies me to similar or equivalent immoral actions.
The Charr also attacked Orr and Kryta. Which was not their land.
Um… the best defense is a good offence?
The Charr consume. There are no Charr naturalists. No Charr ecologists. etc.
they can only work as a Nomadic society. Like the Huns or Mongols in reality. but again, this requires more or less unlimited resources.
Realistically speaking, the Charr would not have enough farmland, hunting grounds, etc to actually feed themselves.Little to no art or culture.
Bah who needs naturalists and ecologists anyway.
Actually there are plenty of Charr farmers, given that they’re giant cats so primarily or exclusively carnivores (not sure about their biology) it primarily takes the form of livestock farming.
As for Charr culture https://youtu.be/FXaTcZWBfC0?t=53s, they’ve got plenty :P
My example was chosen to make people uncomfortable.
The problem of course being that it’s a conversation ender because (I’d like to imagine) most of us have been socialised not to belittle someone else’s personal tragedies. So yeah, its kinda like meeting a nice girl or guy at a party and then they start talking about their furry-fetish. Most people will be uncomfortable, but it certainly does facilitate conversation.
Yeah ANet should really really look at conveying information a bit better. What OP considers Season 1 is actually the Personal Story, S1 is what followed the personal story and led up to Season 2. Although new player would obviously not know any of this, because it’s not made clear in game.
Transmutation charges are so easy to get, it’s more or less of a non-issue to me. Can’t speak for other people, but then again the poll is a personal opinion.
Do we have to activate a mastery to benefit from it, so we can only “equip” once at a time ?
No, you can only level one track at a time but once you’ve unlocked something you have it available no matter what track you’re leveling.
The other question that afaik hasn’t even been asked yet is “Why won’t new fractals work?”
We don’t know if new fractals are coming either (although new fractal support seems to be), but would that work?
Dungeons are (when you’re good) much easier and much more rewarding in pure cash, is that the thing?
Yeah fractals do feel like they were made to be easily expanded upon. Adding a small instance here and there would conceivably be less effort than adding a full on dungeon with multiple paths. Even if they only add a new boss instance (i.e. only a single area with a single boss).
Can I ask how we can def see this is the same content as one season? All the info isn’t out there yet, but it’s already more than than Season 2 had
Literally no one outside of ANet can make such a claim. No one knows the full scope of the content, so OP is lying when he says this is just a Living World season because there is no way he could know from just playing the stress test.
Mmmm can’t remember if I used my easy password on twitch or not… (probably though I tend to use my easy password on things I don’t mind losing) well I have two stage authentication on both GW2 and my email so I kinda feel safe either way…
What I see is a lot of white knighting on the forums.
Also known as people who don’t agree with you. Also seeing as how the title should have been “My Biggest Concern about HoT”, clearly you’re lacking a bit of ‘theory of mind’.
…but what we experienced today in the HoT “beta” is nowhere even near anything I would even call a beta or an alpha.
It was a stress beta…
What we saw today was the next episode of the living story dressed up to appear like it will be expansion after some serious overhaul…. when there is currently nowhere near an expansion-sized chunk of content even close to finished for HoT.
They used the demo for the stress beta…
I feel that continuing the living world…. putting up a pay wall and labeling it as an expansion is unacceptable….
Yes I agree. Do you have proof of this?
For the Gw2 stress test betas, players were able to test “the game.” ….
So you know it was a stress test? Are you struggling with the meaning of the word ‘stress’ or ‘test’?
you’ll probably finish all the mastery in a month anyway.
Some people will probably finish it in less than a week, unless ANet heavily alters how difficult it is to level once you hit anet.
Ascended mats are just completely uneccessary…
Other than making ascended items, so ‘completely’ is probably inaccurate.
Well seeing as how we only know about it because of data-mining… there’s no guarantee well ever see it (although chances are better than not we will eventually).
So I keep wondering how will they keep you from just gliding to the end of a jumping puzzle?
Seeing as how gliding is basically falling with some style, make the end point higher than the starting point.
From what i understood from the angryjoe interview, when HoT rolls out, jumping puzzles will turn into instanced activities (like the adventure/quest system) with their own leaderboards and better prizes the faster you complete it.
Haven’t heard anything about them being instanced.
Hm… I experienced the opposite. With 5 man (or really small groups), the Wyvern was done in less than 2 Minutes , while a large group took much longer. It’s harder to knock it down, because the Upscaling was massive.
I didn’t notice any upscaling of the break bar, all I know is he was knocked down everytime with groups of 10 or more players which by an hour into beta all knew when to hit the boss with cc, it became trivial.
Well I wasn’t there. But I do know that content scaling presently in GW2 tends to have a limit. So it becomes difficult until it becomes trivial.
Didn’t they say if Evon won LA would have a better defense and the damage would have been less?
Well rumors have it that the changes would have been more substantial https://youtu.be/fMOK8ZyIjEQ?t=19m59s
It’s not really solo friendly.
The whole money argument needs some devils advocacy.
If all they cared about was the bottom line, they might as well push more development into gem-store content. Develop an expansion to sell for 30$ vs releasing a bikini on the gemstore for 30$ (and gem equiv). Hmmm what would take more time to develop? They need to create a quality product, and if the instanced content is lacking then they’re going to have to give us A LOT of something else to make up for it.
Engagement and retention are massively important to profits. If people quit playing your game because they’re bored, they’re not going to buy those raven wings.
So the question is, do dungeons, on the whole, drive engagement?
They certainly do for some people, but for how many?
Only ANet would have those stats and they’re not telling us.
Specializations available in the Beta?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: CureForLiving.5360
This seems to be basically the Pax demo with a change here and there, so we probably won’t see anything in the stress test that we didn’t see in the demo
I was watching a medieval stage combat team training for a few months the last year and they had one lefty in the group that could land several surprise hits, because his opponent blocked on the wrong side in reflex.
Yeah that and spiral staircases.
http://www.rightleftrightwrong.com/issues_combat.html
Charges are available in the game, you don’t need to spend any money to get them.
And they’re not even particularly difficult to get. Map completion in PvE (can quickly do the capitals) and PvP rewards tracks.
They can sell their product for however long they wish to and they need not explain themselves in regards to their gemstore. There were many “promises” made and expectations had when we purchased this game, and as far as my memory serves me, control over the gemstore was not one of them.
That’s a bit of a inflexible. At the core you’re right, although I do feel that player are still entitled to provide feedback. ANet doesn’t have to listen of course, but I like to think they do and although we often get not so great feedback every now and then there’s something nice or novel.
Stress Test = story? how disappointing....
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

They basically just used the demo and made it the beta.
As for the story, in the demo they altered the story a bit for demo-ing purposes. Presumably it’s not mandatory upon entry.
Speaking personally… I rather like the dialogue. Well if S2 is anything to go by the first instance or two usually have more talking while the later have more action.
What’s the point of single day sales anet? Seriously?
Prevents people from having enough time to grind gold → gems i.e. increases the probability of people having to buy with real money.
Have you tried turning it off and on again? Or more to the current context, exit the game and start it up again?
I’ve just starting keeping old soul bound items on the characters until I salvage them or something. Do think I have a few items in my bank that belongs to who knows which alt.
So yeah pls ANet.
That kinda went in the opposite direction though. Tiny Snowflakes are worthless now.
Really wasn’t a lot of uses for them to begin with, well compared to candy corn that allows you to get new bags and stuff.
I’d consider buying this if all the other infinite mining tools were upgraded to give ‘extras’ like the watchwork mining pick – after all, why would I want to buy something that gives me less money than the ultimate infinite mining pick (watchwork)?
As others have said, anet has learned their lesson. Lot of complaining on the forums.
Evon gnashblade in all his honesty and glory…. I supported him only to have the fall of abaddon fractal and certainly not for his projects for the city.
Apparently the story would have been a lot different if we had voted for Evon.
With the taxes i pay Black Lion i could have rebuilt Lions Arch ten times already.
Fluff wise, the tax is here to pay storage facilities and trade security and also fill up Mr Gnashblade belly.
And how much do you think it cost to train a bird or a griffin, or wrangle a ghost into delivering your mail? But yes Mr Gnashblade is a very hungry Charr.
I’m left-handed and I don’t get this. I really don’t see how playing a left handed giant-horned-cat-monster would vastly improve my experience
Already on twitch waiting for the streams to start. Hopefully we get to see more than was in the demos… maybe a specialization? Nah probably not.
Would you like me to dig up the lines I remember that indicate Ascalon is a special case?
If it wouldn’t be too much effort. Would personally prefer an in-game source as apposed to a out-of-game source.
Everything in life is a matter of choice.
You’ve never been mugged, have you?
Twice in my case. First time was just a attempt to snatch my phone, the second was actually two guys with a knife. So from my experience yes their was a very clear choice, granted some options were more reasonable and others more foolhardy, but the options were still there.
We still had single Charr cubs in LA for example, so there must also be family concepts, where the cubs grow up with their parents and/or another adult guardian in a smaller context and not in a Farrar.
Well it does get a bit confusing. For the most part Charr cubs can be described as being gladium and the children of gladium. So obviously not belonging to any of the legion there wouldn’t be the same imperative to send the young off to a fahrar. All the Charr in the lionguard for example clearly aren’t working for the legions so it wouldn’t be unexpected for them to have children.
However the confusing part comes in with characters like Snarl Backdraft (if memory serves) who apparently was raised in LA but is now a part of the legions. Although that could be explained by the cubs of a gladium still being allowed to join the legions if he or she demonstrates enough talent or skill. As we’ve seen with Rox (and the PC to an extent) it is possible to form new warbands or join existing warbands.
Both races wouldn’t be good in riding, because too big, too heavy and too much of the predator/hunter in them.
That and a horse probably wouldn’t allow a Charr anywhere near it, much less allow a Charr to ride it.
…being account bound?
Why can’t i sell them?
Oh that’s easy. Ascended armour along with fractals came at a point when a lot of players (so this was relatively early in GW2 life) who came from other MMOs that had a classic gear treadmill were complaining that you could get max stat armor very very easily. So to placate the vocal players ANet introduces ascended with it’s large amounts of grind, and fractals that at higher levels requires ascended armor.
So to make them sell-able would be against the core idea, that is to give players the grind they ask for.
Mind you ANet has never outright stated it, but there does seem to be undercurrent of: well that didn’t really work out too well. A lot of players rather liked not having a gear treadmill.
Tell me that this wouldnt be awesome on spec for warriors?!
:D
You do know the fight didn’t end in the guy with a spear winning :P
… so the “trolls” will simply message you then click block quickly and nothing will have changed?
Ignore it, block back, have a nice day.
They are trolls. Why are you trying to respond?
Whatever makes life more difficult for trolls is in my opinion always desirable.
Can we ‘prove negatives’ nowadays?
Negatives were never impossible to prove, just the fringe cases can get nigh impossible.
Image when an asura fights with a charr and the little one uses a spear
the charr just pick him up, eat him and use the spear as a toothpick
Btw i miss gw1 weapons like spear and schyte, and i totaly can image whips
Seeing as how a Asura greatsword can be almost as kittenome Charr dagger, yeah I can see that.
The Break-bar, or how to commit to mechanics
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns
Posted by: CureForLiving.5360
If you design a game mechanic, then commit to it.
I take it you’re a big fan of the sunk cost fallacy.
If you are not willing to make the game mechanic part of the entire game, then why add it in the first place?
Because there’s a big difference between design phase and implementation. What looked good on paper doesn’t always work well in practice. Deviance seemed like one of those ideas that was good on paper but didn’t work well, particularly given the dungeon design that made deviance a non-consideration and the focus on large zerg content which rendered deviance a useless mechanic.
The break-bar mechanic sounds to me, like a doctor patching up a wound, when the patient really needs to be brought into surgery.
It sounds to me more like the surgery. What you’re proposing is patching up deviance.
I don’t know… I’d like guild hall stuff (but I’m afraid it’s not going to be as extensive as I like), I’d like specializations (but I’m afraid it’s not going to be as extensive as I like). Well I guess no matter what info they release I’d no longer have to worry about how extensive it is or not.
Probably not. ANet said they’d look into it when they originally removed them but I don’t think it’s particularly high priority at the moment, or will be anytime soon.
Isn’t this why we have tonics? Granted we don’t have a lot of combat tonics.
I wish I could have OPs bandwidth and ping…
