Not for a 1 v 1 tournament. Some builds are just too broken for that. 3 v 3 and up to 5 v 5 would work.
We have an idea for how to set-up a 1v1 tourney in a way that would make it quite fair (we’ve got rules for almost everything and bans for most of the unfair stuff) but we just need to know if you guys would be willing to contribute to the prize pool.
It’s still 1 v 1 and there are several broken builds that are going to enter. I wouldn’t pay for a 1 v 1 tournament. I would pay for a 3 v 3 up to 5 v 5
I added a bit about how the tournament works to the original post. Let me know if that changes things.
- No bunker amulets; Soldier, Settler’s, Cleric, Magi
- No exploits.
- No Strenght Runes.
We haven’t banned any particular class skills or speccs because of how we’ve set-up the tournament.
The main tournament is called the The Ultimate Profession Tournament.
Initial matches will be inter-class so Warriors v Warriors, Mesmer v Mesmers and so on. All these matches happen under an Umbrella bracket. So for instance Warriors v Warriors and Guardians v Guardians happen under the “Battle of the Sturdy” and whoever wins the tournament of the Warriors will meet the Guardians and this is the same for all the other classes. They all have their own brackets. We expect that this will reducee the chance of everyone playing a specific class because they think they would win with that.
If they do that, they will have to beat other members of that class at that spec.

Hey guys, just as the title says, would you pay a $20 entry fee for a 1v1 tournament with these prizes?
EDIT: The prize list wasn’t complete but has now been updated to have all the info.
1st: $500, R8M4 , Gems
2nd: $250, gems
3rd: $125, gems

All thieves use shortbow, all mesmers use greatsword, all engis use grenades
Lies.
Condi engis are extremely strong team fighters and a dangerous thing engage for most classes. Engis are right up next to warriors in getting the most benefit out of the rune changes. Balthazar and the extra sigil are a huge deal for condi engi. It’s become so strong that it’s less reliant on grenade aim as well as intelligent use of incendiary.
They do belong in this meta. I don’t know why people don’t play them more often…
Because everyone is on the Warrior hype train.
engineer is totally useless in this meta. Can’t team fight, gets destroyed by condi warrior, have to play perfect to survive a hambow or a mesmer in 1v1, gets destroyed by necro 1v1 , really hard to beat eles also, only easy matchup is 1v1 vs thiefs but in 2v2s gets destroyed by thiefs lol.
Couldn’t it just be YOUR build that is bad at fighting Warriors and mesmers?
I’ve had success fighting them by just not playing the point holding game. Close-quarters any warrior would just destroy you.
Or break out of CC using Endurance!
Who said you couldn’t learn something from ESO.
You’re killing pvp. NOBODY enjoys being spammed with conditions, far more than what you can clear. Even when using elixir C as an engi I still have 3-4 condis the next second.
Do something please.
PS: I don’t even play engi btw, it’s an occasional alt and also an example.
Well engies have very few cleansing options apart from Elixirs so I can see where the problem is BUT that being said, just use Elixir R with Cleaning Formula 409 and that should solve your condition woes.
If you hit it twice the shield explodes to heal you. If you activate once the shield stays up. It works fine.
Thief is like this at the moment. Play S/D or nothing.
Balance was better before the AMAZING FEETCHA PATCH.
Err… no it wasn’t.
Combined with a stun warrior, it’s an amazing trait.
Funnily enough, this build ends up making Guardians even worse at their job.
I would also put Poison Cloud in this build or possibly run Rune of Rata sum if you can’t fit it on the bar. That weakness + the boon stripping would drop warrior damage and thief damage a ton.
STORY TIME!
This happened recently; We came against a team with 4 warriors and 1 thief, we were 2 mesmers, an Ele and a Necro. At first we thought we’d never get close to even winning but then, we were wooping their butts left right and center, upside and down BUT someone on our team kept going to the far point to decap it. It was the Ele.
To be honest he wasn’t harming our chances cos we were doing pretty good with him going to far and being a distraction but suddenly someone became enraged saying; “Stop playing for 3 points” but the Ele didn’t listen, we were winning so why stop right?
Clock hits 8:30 and I know what time it is. I rush to the lower buff like a rat looking for scraps after someone took the trash out. There was one Warrior, I’m a Mesmer
“I guess I’ll just distract him.” I thought to myself..
“At least until reinforcements arrive…”
One… two… I dodge his immob, three… four…. I dodge the eviscerate. My eyes snaps to the creaky wooden bridge over the frozen pool of water. No, it wasn’t my reinforcement, it was his.
Just as hope fell into despair, hope sprang alive again like a violet in spring. The Necro from my team arrived. Dropping from the ceiling like a ragdoll.
With a swift jump, he rose to his feet running straight after the Warriors, fearing both of them away from me, giving me space to breath and heal.
I healed up. Now time to face these rascals.
I turned around to see my teammate on low health, only a sliver left in his necrotic body. He enters a shrouded form that looked like an embodiment of darkness itself… Deathshroud they call it, but this only bought him a tiny fraction of time.
With one eviscerate he was down on the ground…. but I was ready. As soon as he dropped I had already started channelling Mass Invisibility, making both him and I invisible to our Warrior friends, disabling their ability to finish him off.
I healed him but I was badly injured in the process. The Warriors were swing wildly at the air trying to stop me from healing the Necro and in the process they weakened me.
The Necro got up but I am now low on health and my stealth will soon fade. I headed away from the Tranquility buff, unfortunately my stealth faded just then and the Warriors spotted me. They came after with little held back.
One… two… dodge an immob… three… four… dodge an eviscerate… five… six…. retaliate. I switch to my Greatsword and knock them away from the Tranqulity buff. With another dodge, I switched to my Sword and Pistol… Magic bullet, illusionary leap (immob).
“BOOOONG!!!” “BOOOONG!!!!”
“YOU HAVE ALL THREE POINTS, HOLD THEM AT ALL COSTS!”
The Necro had capped the orb in the time while I was messing around with the Warriors. They did not see that coming. The immob, the knockback and the stun gave the Necro enough time and distance to take the buff uninterrupted.
A great triumph, we have this in the bag for sure. But tragedy strikes when I notice something that would spell our doom…. A member of our team had either DCed or rage quitted…. probably both.
Rage, sadness and tunnel vision ensue. We lost to the Warriors after such a glorious moment….
I shall never forgive that rage quitter…. especially since I don’t even play Mesmer that much and I totally carried JEEZ!!!! #jk

yea and do u know any profession that can clean conditions evey 2 sec?
Yeap.
Step 5: Use toss Elixir R when you fight a necro, it removes 2 conditions per second.
Did you verify this? The guild wars wiki states:
This skill removes 1 condition on the initial hit, the pulses do not remove conditions afterwards.
It removes 2 conditions per second with Cleaning Formula 409. Try it yourself. Or you could just watch this; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGWwMxpev9g

You’d have to be close to get the blasts heals to land on your allies but if you’re fighting in tight corridors, it shouldn’t be a problem.

In serious tournaments I think its a bad idea to have any arbitrary restrictions on what you can use. In a for-fun tournament like the 1v1/2v2 games, where you’re playing something that there is no question isn’t going to be balanced, then sure. But otherwise, banning away comps is just bandaiding and hiding a deeper balance problem.
Some restrictions would actually help the game be more interesting to watch. Some people really get creative when they are put in a restrictive box.
Thanks for the constructive thread guys but I can safely say axe/sword longbow CAN but in very very unlikely to kill any decent decap engi.
In my case ( as I know warrior) I won’t be killed by it.Someone mentioned standing in the firefield…. why. Why would a decap engi stand in it? Once he has decap he can stay off point for 1 full firefield. Then the warrior ( minus zerker stance) will have 0 adren.
Basically save the block for only for pindown’d, dodge the evis ( quite ez) and stand off point if they make the mistake for longbow f1 and they’re damage output will severely drop. besides they only have 1 stability ( no lyssa anymore)..
Thanks guys for the nice replies!
The Decap Engie can be outplayed but I do see the potential in it when it is played well.
My main belief though, is that any class with the proper amount of reflects can render most of their damage useless.
KPz has the better comp. APeX just executed better. I don’t think a decap engi could handle Axe/Sword | Longbow. Too much burning, torment and bleed on top of eviscerate.
Yeap. I can testify to the fact that all a Warrior has to do is constantly get you standing in the AoE burning field and he doesn’t need to actually hit you to kill you. Especially if you’re an engie.
Firearms isn’t considered weak at all. If you were talking inventions then yea but not firearms.
The main reason why people are running that build is because they can return to the amount of damage that Hambow was doing originally with the Runes of the Strength. If that rune was changed, the amount of power coming out would be weakened but the functionality would still be there and they would still be able to get a bit of damage with the Sigil of Battle.
I still maintain that teams should run Projectile reflection to nullify that longbow damage. Would make things a lot more interesting.
Hambow is only strong because no one is taking projectile reflection. Just saying.
It’s really simple, anyone can do it and it’s the braindead counter to a build that is too powerful. This and Scepter Focus Eles are what teams need to take care of this disease that’s about the plague us.
I personally play FT/EG because FT has Airblast which reflects projectiles and that recharges every 12-15s but for all you guys who feel that a safer option is needed, Fortified turrets is your answer.
If any of the teams in the current ToL tourney ran that spec with their engineers (or S/F eles) they would have nullified those Warriors.
But good job on all fronts though. I just wish someone would shut down those Wars.
It’s pretty much what they did with Keen Edge on the Ranger and you can do it right now with Transmute but I just felt Cleaning Formula/Toss Elixir S would be better since it will be AoE stealth/cleanse.
The way cloaking device works currently is, when you get immobed, you go into stealth immediately but you’re still immobilized so your quite prone to getting nuke by AoEs pointed in your area.
My suggestion is to change that to “Toss Elixir S at your location when immobilized” this will allow synergy with traits like Cleaning Formula 409 allowing you to escape the immob by cleansing it automatically.
The rise of the condi guard makes me feel like I predicted the future when I made my build.
It’s literally the same template everyone seems to be running.
if it’s PvE we’re talking the only skill that’s amazing would be Utility Goggles. 5 Stacks of might and seconds of Fury = Best skill in the Gadget set.
Step 1: Choose a kit you want to replace with Elixir R
Step 2: Change that kit to Elixir R
Step 3: Replace a Trait in Alchemy with Cleaning Formula 409
Step 4: move 10 points from Alchemy to tools to get Always Prepared(because its funny when you use Elixir R) and also because Inertial Converter.
Step 5: Use toss Elixir R when you fight a necro, it removes 2 conditions per second.
Step 6: Repeat step 5
Step 7: Profit

Hey guys, after a few days of testing, here are my thoughts on how the new traits affect my old Flamethrower/Elixir Gun build (and possibly many others) and how you can counter the newly formed Necro monster without AR even in a condition build.
Check out the original video and Build here (this was back when Kit Refinement still had 100nades and turrets were bad);
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmW__JFzDOQ
Updated Video/Build Here;

Build; Elixir R edition; http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQJAqelUUpWrtbxCLseRCbBNyzMGQNBR2xo8xIEAA-TJBHwAW2fAwDAIZZgBnAAA
Flame Turret Edition; http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdAQJAqelUUpWrtbxqKseNCbBNyzMGR3xoM7PGhAA-TJBHwAAeAA+2fIZZgBnAAA
TL;DW;
- Elixir R is your “I win” button against Condi Necros
- Synaptic Overload is good for Rezzes/stomps ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQETiQ72YTo
- Experimental turrets + Flame turret + Might on Swap + Might on Blast = 25 Stacks for always
- Balthy is only good because of Burn on Heal
- Flame Turret is a full set of Balthy Runes with the ability to stealth when an enemy is close to you.

Top teams are not using engis for a good reason. Watch ToL.
Engis are fine but far away from unkillable.
I’d like to know what that good reason is.
Can we tone it down? I just fought an Asuran Warrior on Forest and literrally could not tell when he was going for a pin down or tossing that torment sword.
Tone it down or make it grey instead of white.
Trust me, this is THE ONE THING they should make account bound. I remember GW1 having account bound skills.
May be they didn’t have time to put this in the feature patch. Who knows…
No the reason initially was everyone would teleport to the mists for free to go use the bank and they didn’t want that but the counter to that now is, everyone is teleporting to the mists to get the new traits now so….. whatchaganadoaboutdat?
Audio is extremely quiet, but nice video.
I did notice that after I posted the video, I’ll try to keep that in mind for future vids. Thanks for the compliment though.
You haven’t tried it? You should! Just call 1800-20-SKILLPOINTS right now.
Rocket Turret. AoE Toolbelt skill, AoE active attack. Kit Refinement will also give you a few seconds to use your Bomb skills because of the CC, using, Blunderbuss, Jumpshot, Grenage Barrage on rotation is also advisable.
Celestial most likely.
Synaptic Overload is a bit like Kit Refinement in that we as engies need to know when it’s up so we can take full advantage of it. Right now I have to find a 20 second cooldown skill to sync the cooldowns so I know when it’s up.
Quite difficult when there are some skills you just want to save.
I thought the server maintenance was done already. I keep getting randomly kicked out of PvP matches and my connection doesn’t even flunctuate.
Right now I can’t even log-in. Probably going to get dishonored for no reason now.
ANet nerfed the only real counter.runes to condition spam…while adding many more condition spam options.
What exactly did they nerf? Because Runes of Water has a 25% change to remove condis when hit, Sigil of Purity has a 60% chance to remove condis on hit, Lyssa removes 5 conditions on elite use….. which runes of epic condi removal did they truly nerf to the ground?

Not saying its OP but is it fine for arenanet to have afk specs that allow you to eat dinner while playing?
- spirit ranger
- MM necro
- PU mesmerIm just asking because I’d rather fight an actual player than an afk person.
I think you should take Spirit Ranger out. Without enough brains you can make them cry. MM necro on other hand, when you kill their pets, they gain deathshroud so even if you drop them low, you still have to chew through DS to kill them.
PU mesmer, condis can kill them and they can’t hold a point for the life of them.
They say everyone’s damage has been increased but fact is, I can only FEEL it when I fight a mesmer.
1 single freaking dodge shatter can down a man, it’s hilarious.
Same thing for Guardian skills/traits that convert conditions to boons.
There is nothing to do with 2/3 friends. Do arena-net really not understand social scenarios? It is way way harder to sustain a 5 man group than it is to sustain a 2/3 man group. People have their own commitments. In a 5 man groups these clash often so playing as a “team” simply doesn’t work. People have personalities. In a 5 man group these clash so playing as a “team” simply doesn’t work. People want to play something fun. When (to win) you need 3 (minimum) bunkers (for the “pro” rotations) then you need to find 3 people who are so desperate to win that they want to run some sort of do-nothing build which thrives by just auto attacking for 100 (no offense to bunkers – someone has to do it).
GW1 required you to have at least 4-8 team mates for team and GvG respectively and that game didn’t fall apart.
I think Anet just messed at the initialization of PvP that’s all and it’s hard to pick it back up 2 years down the line.
They will be it back up though, they have to, their game depends on it.
so the main question is does the condi guard can do better dmg over condi necro/engi in group fight…
so its different play style which i think some group will adopt it in the future as more of us will try it
Thing is you can come in, bust out bunch of damage AoE but you’ll never out do what the utility that is having a variety of conditions to apply. AoE Chill and Poison are very important in team fights and the Necro and engie provide that.
I always considered that in team fights it’s all about utility not necessarily power.
the main difference is guardian can put perma burning while other profession cant.
I keep seeing this being said. An engie can put up perma burning. So can a mesmer.
Outside of that (this isn’t directed to anyone specifically), it would be cool to see some PvP gameplay videos of these condi builds? Its one thing to write about how its effective, and how to x, y, and z. But seeing it is what makes people believers.
I’ll do so soon. I’m making the update guides to all my builds that were updated in the feature patch and you will see the gameplay vids in there.
On the first day of the patch I noticed the increase in damage instantly. On a normal day when I get caught by an Illusionary leap and Blurred Frenzy my health never drops fast because i’d block a few of the hits and I’d still survive with a little health unless the mesmer dodged backwards and did another shatter… On the day of the patch, this was no longer the case, I died from 1 blurred frenzy and one shatter combo without any hope of coming back.
