Those were 1960’s/1970’s. I remember them as a child, and I always found them tacky. Their resurgence bothered me. They would not improve the game for me! I’d claim lack of lore fit for them except, well, the game does have boxing gloves and fuzzy backpacks …

I agree. There are “cheats” to help, though they are clumsy. You can put yourself by a wall or tree etc and pan your camera until it hits a small sweet spot where it zooms in but doesn’t get so close as to make you transparent with floating teeth. You can work with a friend to exchange screens where you stand near each other and pan until the other person is filling your view.

I’d love to be able to easily zoom in to see the tweed on my Noble’s Coat, or the etching on my hair accessory. The textures in this game are so beautiful and so hard to see thanks to the camera limitations.

I was just coming in to say I just heard an Asura shout “Accelerating!” and heard it as “Akh! Celery!” like he was frightened/disgusted by the stuff.

It’s not easy. I’ve played a few rounds and I can never even get to the gift before someone else has picked it up. I think this achieve will not be on my completed list any more than it was last year, when I did return some but not the total needed.

It’s in different pieces but the skirt of the coat is part of the pants. And nothing else matches. (I am speaking of the male version — the female corset can mix a bit better). Still you can use the gloves, boots, and hat separately.

The new halloween ones and the release of the old ones came out in different weeks. Though yes, the new ones came first. There’s still time for new ones to appear — what a lovely Christmas Eve gift that would be! (So long as they are of the same quality as the old ones).

It’s very eye of the beholder. I can’t stand the heavy ascended, the medium is ok on women, and I really like the light on women. Tonight I finished up an ascended skirt for my fashion-tailor necromancer who is highly unlikely to ever be a fractal runner (my guardian fills that role). I’m looking forward to adding the chest and the Dwayna wings. And this is after my first look way back when was ugh wth — dyes really help.

Well, I bought some from Shelby in Snowden Drifts and they did nothing to red-name Skritt in Queensdale. It does say they work on someone else holding a snowball, so I don’t think any skritt but the ones in LA will work

I got tired of trying to compete to hit Skritt in LA so I TP bought 25 socks for a bit over 7 silver, used those for a sealed package of snowballs, and headed to Queensdale to find me some skritt. On arrival I double clicked my package — and it just vanished, poof. No skill bar change, no snowballs in inventory.

I’m two dailies away from the meta, gorram it.

Events, dungeons, dailies/monthlies. WvW works as well, I hear. Even if you aren’t going to do the hearts, explore zones to get wp’s and pois and vistas, that’s a boost plus then you are able to quickly get to world boss fights.

You can also join the Queensdale champion train, though it’s hard to get it running smoothly. It’s nearly mindless running from champ to champ, zerg killing them, looting for profit, and getting event xp for each kill.

Me, I like doing the PS and hearts, they can be done quickly once you know what’s up with them and they give a large xp boost. (Ok, so the Orr journey via the Pale Tree is very long, as is Forging the Pact, but most PS bits don’t take that long).

It seems it still helped to have gone through the previous events (and paid attention). I had no problem figuring out the shut down line because it’s one she used in the Pavilion attack. Though also it’s kind of clear that deactivation = denying the use to another.

On the other hand, I just tried variations of the pattern on Molten and Computer until it worked. A guildie pointed out the Flame and Frost symbolism on Molten. I still don’t quite know the logic to the computer solve.

I wouldn’t have known combat was even an option (I mean, it had it, but that seemed wrong to me as a puzzle solver) except I saw the achieve listing for doing it all by fighting.

I liked the puzzles, by the way. They were very simple versions of the stuff I loved in Myst and Riven.

If you’re still looking, OP, and want a lore name … first name can come from Latin or Greek traditions, or have hard sounds like Grax, Merek, etc. (I’m assuming male charr). Last name can be descriptive, or have one part that reflects his warband (Stone, Lightning, Gear, Oil, whatever — but not Blood, Iron, or Ash as those are the main legions and claiming one of those is like claiming to be royalty in some ways). Then another part to be his own modifier, reflecting personality or skill or just sounding cool as you see fit. The order of personal/warband is variable.

I had a Charr ele with last name Razorstorm as she was in the Razor Warband RP guild. That faded for a while, I remade and renamed her and now the last name is Stormburn. I haven’t decided if she’s Storm or Burn warband.

Most runes are incredibly cheap on the TP. Do a right click on a rune, select sell on TP, and see what the lowest sell price is. Most of the low end ones vendor for 16 copper and TP for 17 copper (which is a loss due to the listing fee and sales tax). Or maybe they TP for 20-24 copper … anyway, other than some high end level 80 exotic ones, you’ll be paying maybe a few silver for one.

Crafting: Don’t do it by crafting recipes you know. Use the discovery window. Discovering things around your current skill level gives you a huge boost. Crafting “junk” is miniscule in benefit.

Short guide: Check a recipe you know to see the pattern of items that go in. Craft those “crafting components” along with any special item. In the discovery window, double click anything to move it to the discovery square to the right. Repeat for the next square with another item. Eventually it will say “this looks like something” and you can make it. You get one of whatever it is, to salvage, sell, or use, and you now know that recipe. With huntsman you will want to make the best insignia you can, then each of two weapon components, combine in discovery. You can use several of the same insignia but only discover that variant once per weapon type.

You don’t have to switch, btw. You can learn every craft on one character, though you do have to pay a little to swap which ones are active. You can have 2 active at a time. Me, I like to do just two per alt and swap to the alt that has the skill.

I’ve also been hearing it on pretty much any stock out-loud phrase from NPCs or from players saying things like “Eat my dust!” I’ve noticed it in PS cut scenes as well. I thought it was because I tweaked my dialogue volume up since it had gotten muted.

Almost any vocal line in the game sounds as if it were recorded on a sound stage with bad acoustics now. I don’t mind that much — at least I can hear the words (I’ve even heard my guardian saying things I never noticed before) — but it does break immersion.

ANet has specifically stated back before beta that there are no “half-breeds.” The different races are not inter-fertile. Not even norns/humans. Toli Rosca is correct as well, sylvari can’t have children. They are actually freaked out by children, these tiny helpless things that come into the world without knowledge or skills.

In terms of marrying, I’m not sure norns or sylvari do that. The player-made Wiki says "Two norn will marry, but only if they are of equal status. During the wedding, someone must speak on behalf of the couple in order to show that they are a worthy match for each other. " So perhaps they do, but how would one judge the relative status of a sylvari?

As to sylvari, their whole culture is a quarter of a century old at best. They haven’t had time to develop many traditions, though they’ll likely magpie in a lot from others. Still, they’re more likely to simply say “you and I are heart-mates” than to seek the okay of authority figures for the union.

With twins, yes, that’s doable. There are sylvari who come out of the same pod and are called twins. There’s a pair of male twins in a sylvari PS chain. So your norn could heart-bond with two sylvari (and put up with a lot of manure from his norn buddies for it). But kids? Nope.

I never got a tonic in 20 tries last year (having to buy wadding/glue for the last few). I decided yesterday what the heck, I’ve got a whole bank tab of Wintersday items including frames, let’s try for a griffon tonic this year. It cost 4 gold in wadding/glue for one try and, of course, did not get me the tonic.

At least the Forge recipe still works and still returns the frame in the gift, as noted above.

I think the OP means things like Thief, Mesmer, etc, those being the “professions” in GW2.

A new crafting skill could be fun. I’m not sure how Archeology would fit in. Maybe something like a Scholar that could make skill-teaching scrolls? Hard to balance, though.

Anyway yeah, a new one would pretty much have to be heavy just to even out the numbers. And it would have to do things the other professions don’t. ANet came up with Mesmers which are quite different from classes in other games, so likely they can think of something interesting here — or get inspired by the many player posts suggesting and describing new heavy professions.

Constantine: It’s not hate (at least not from me). It’s concern that a very small part of the game population wants to change things for everybody else to suit their specific and unusual style of play.

It’s fine to want to do all the achieves. It’s not fine to tell everyone else they get less choice/selection/flexibility in types of game play because you personally can’t do all the choices. Would you say “I don’t have time to run every dungeon path every day, assault every WvW keep, experience all the LS, run 100 sPvP matches, and take out every world boss on the timer, so please reduce the game only to world bosses?”

As you didn’t mention RP as a thing you’re looking for, I can’t nudge you to app to my action adventure RP guild even though most of the officers are women and many of the members are as well …

But you should look at Tarnished Coast as a server as it’s densely populated, mostly full of helpful people, has a strong presence in PvE and WvW, and has been the unofficial NA RP server since beta. RP’s not required, it just tends to draw more creative and mature people (as in any MMO). Sure we get trolls and griefers but they are more laughable than game-breaking.

You can guest to any server you like to run around and listen to map chat and eavesdrop on out loud stuff in cities. Get a feel for where you like hanging out before you move — or stay where you are, which I hear is a good server for the things you’ve mentioned, and just guest whenever you want a change of pace.

Well, the Lionguard went to Caledon to deal with the new TA path. So that’s old news, as it were. It still could segue into a push into the Dominion.

So it’s not just me! Yes, I get the see-through inventory and the blurry map and minimap. I haven’t changed my hardware or my game settings other than an audio tweak to hear dialogue better (which now echos as if on a sound stage, but that’s another issue). I have high speed internet, high game settings, and never used to have any load issues at all.

It looks like you can’t get the frames at all, but you can choose one toy to get when you’ve done the meta.

They will at some point in the next few months be changing it so PvE/PvP skins are transferable between the two areas. Right now you can’t bring them over to PvE but later, it seems, you should be able to.

I’m a bit confused, you say “come watch the drama unfold” but the rules in the original thread say “no spectators allowed.” And the prizes go only to the team members. So this thread suggesting anyone can come watch and have a chance at stuff seems counter to the actual announcement.

Good news! You can deposit those PvP items to collectibles. They will go to the PvP locker in the mists (when you load in, swing sharply around to your right). You can see all possible PvP gears in the locker, and the ones you’ve deposited will show up colorfully.

Any of them you equip while in the Mists will become your look in minigames such as Sanctum Sprint or just when running through to get to LA.

They are soulbound until deposited, then alts can take them out to wear. You aren’t likely to get a cohesive look from the random achieve chest drops but you can at least get out of the starter appearance. Note: you can only deposit one of the item. If it won’t deposit, you already have one. If you equip it on an alt, then you can deposit another one.

The current daily says to kill one of the Toxic champs, including the “Warlock” — who is listed separately from the “Alchemist.”

Huh, you’re (mostly) right. She has the same top and arms and boots, but a different skirt and a left-shoulder shoulder piece. I like her skirt much more than the feather bustle the item code gives.

ANet should give us the Anise version as Flamekissed. Unless they’re afraid the Countess would … hurt them.

Queen Jennah’s New Clothes, A Tale.

I saw the meta this year is “Journeyman Toymaker.” Last year it was “Apprentice Toymaker.”

This might sound like me trying to be exclusive. I assure you it’s not. I’m all for everyone getting any neat thing they want and I’m never obsessed with having pixels unique to myself.

However, the moment I saw the new title I thought “How awesome! They’re progressing us from year to year!” Except they aren’t, everyone this year who does the meta gets the Journeyman and cannot get Apprentice. Wouldn’t it be cool if you could amass all the Toymaker titles through the years simply by playing each year to advance a stage? Then it would show your long term stay in the game, plus you’d not be barred from the older titles.

Out of a very tiny sample of people I’ve talked to, they’ve all said they’d prefer it to be progressive (several said it independent of me, not knowing I’d suggested it). Ok .. I think one guildie who didn’t bother with the meta last year is happier to get Journeyman than Apprentice. But darn it, she could just collect Journeyman next year, right?

I do like the mashup of “I have what you need. What do you need?” you get from merchants. I had a guildie who liked to mentally complete a bandit’s dying "Now I’ll never … "

Keep in mind the sliders will really affect things. I previewed the new faces on several alts (thus using my own current slider settings) and tweaked the sliders on some of them. The beat-up female human works so much better for my street rat warrior than her plain-jane face I used before; it’s still her but without the clean waif look. I intend to get that for her when I start RPing her again. The other two faces had a distinctly Asian cast when previewed on an already Canthan-influenced face; face three strikes me as Marjory’s.

The third female asura face came out evil-scary in a far too smug way, far more so with my mesmer’s sliders than in the Dulfy preview. A couple of Sylvari faces, male and female, look like classic UFO aliens.

I think working the sliders will produce some faces that just couldn’t have been created before these new ones were added.

Remember the Halloween costumes didn’t show up in the first part of the Halloween patch. There’s still hope. I’m crossing my fingers to get more of those lovely outfits, as I have more alts now, and also that they will give us new and different nice clothes.

People have been linking GW1 costumes. The tuxes and wedding dresses would be fantastic to fit in with the New Year.

Cancer.9065 is right. Why the heck would she head into that Tower with nothing to protect her skin besides pretty lights?

Though maybe she had on all sorts of stuff under her illusion dress and is just kicking back and relaxing now she’s back in camp.

Or maybe she’s been toxined enough not to be acting rationally or saying smart things — we only have her word for it that she’s nude, too. She could be teasing Marjory.

They did patch out the Grenth one to not be tradeable. I’d imagine the Dwayna one started out and remains as intended.

Drat, I only have 4K Glory (since I don’t PvP). Guess I can’t spend it on anything neat after all.

They said there was no time frame for it, and left the impression it could be months, not weeks, depending on art resources.

Just the Giant Gifts as extras, best I can tell. And Caithe/Scarlet minis, along with all the standard fare from Black Lion chests. I was hoping there might be a chance at the Permanent Hair Stylist, didn’t get anything notable except a Caithe mini I hadn’t had before and exactly enough scraps to bring me to two tickets. Whee, there aren’t any one-ticket items available.

Oh! I think I got ascended mats, too, at least by way of the large pile of Giant Gifts I got.

(This was from 26 chests using 26 keys I’d been saving for the patch).

Heta, it looks just the same. Except now when you mouse over a stack of say, Bloodstone, in your collectibles, it says 1000 in the amount rather than 250. Or if you have less, like maybe 514 wool scraps, they all go into the collectibles wool scrap item slot.

Also my own bank now has a lot of empty slots from my consolidating all the spare stacks of stuff. I won’t be selling off extra carrots for a while, it seems!

They also might add more things in closer to the holiday. I don’t believe we’ll have six weeks with nothing new at all.

I haven’t checked since patch start, though — is there any way to get the Winter’s weapons other than paying 5 tickets each to the Trader (or, of course, paying on the TP for a skin someone else spent 5 tickets on). I really expected those to go to 1 ticket for the event’s duration. Or at least for there to be new ones in the theme for those weapons not covered, and -those- to be 1 ticket.

Agreed, removing is a bad plan, especially with the decent shirts (could sure use more pants and boots options). Oddly they don’t seem to be removing the reading glasses? Or were those accidentally left off the list?

Shouldn’t seasonal items be just one ticket? Are there other event skins coming that will be just one ticket?

Also the new advertised items aren’t yet in the store, but I know it takes a while after the patch for them to show up.

There seem to be two Asian looks for human women (and one beat up scarred red nosed face, might have to nab that for my street rat warrior). One of them is very Marjory. Human men have a scowly older face, a smiling younger face, and an African American face, best I can tell. I’m checking on all my alts, who have different slider settings and that affects things quite a bit.
