I would love it to be replaced by a combo field that blinds everyone constantly standing in it for 3 seconds. Much like the offhand pistol 5 skill. Blind is so underrated..
Condition thieves are good in dungeons. They can solo certain events, but they really lack any support outside venom share, which really is just meh in a dungeon. Shortbow Combo Fields are nice, though.
I CnD off clones, which gives me time to look for the real mesmer. I don’t usually have trouble with them, but seeing as I’m not glass cannon, I can afford more time versus them. Mesmers just slaughter glass cannon thieves…
Confusion mesmers are a real pain in the kitten though. They can and will eat you up if you’re not patient.
I actually like “stab” with one sword…It’s like flanking strike without the buggy and annoying flank part. Although it is weaker…
I don’t want our mobility to change at all. Neither buffs nor nerfs. I think thief is perfect right where it is. Swirmy and slippery, just as the devs intended, but not speed hax fast.
Plus, SoS active is one of my favorite tools again glass cannons and especially when downing rangers, warriors, guardians, engis, basically any class that can interupt you in downed mode is blinded so it misses and you finish them. Quite a useful tool if I say so myself.
Not possible to go from 50% hp to 100% each time he stealthed. With a max healing build you heal around ~400 HP every second in stealth. Seeing as he was P/Ding he was probably using CnD and his main stealth. That’s 3 seconds, or 1200 HP. Now unless his HP is 2400HP, there is no way he could have gone from half to full every time he stealthed, not the way you described it. Even if he had regen, foods, it still doesn’t add up. Something is flawed in either your story, or the thief player himself(hacks, exploits). More likely the first option
Seems like Blackgate has enough players. More would only imbalance T2 further. Send some oceanics to TC/SoR and even things up :P
Honestly, I can’t for one second accept a burst build as a good build for thief. It’s horrible IMO. A good player will rarely die from a backstab thief, and will almost never die in a 1v1 front to front scenario. The tank thief is where it’s at. If you’re solo roaming in WvW and see a tank thief, you better get your condition cures ready :P
In zergs, thieves suffer the most. It’s a ranged AoE fest. Stealth or no stealth, you’re going to get hit. And when you get hit, you’re going to die, fast.
Devs are seen all the time in Sanctum of Rall Lion’s Arch. They’re pretty chill and fun to talk to.
Just place some AOE’s on top of you. It’s it a P/D thief, he can only auto attack, no unload from stealth very often. If it’s a BS thief, he’ll have to get hit by AoE. Don’t mindlessly spam random aoes.
Oh right, I did miss the elementalist. Looks like TheGuy has it covered, though. Anyways, glass cannons should be rather simple to counter. I would worry about the tanky thieves.
Clones would be fun to play with. Always wondered why we stole consume plasma, and not a skill mesmers actually had…
Are you guys 100% sure that these are exploits? I just ninja’d a tower twice in a row with 2 others because the enemy did not do a good enough job with their sweeps. Maybe they just hid in the tower until people left? That’s how we did it.
And if you were wondering, it was us thieves that ninja’d anzi 2 times, only to have TC wipe the floor with us when they found out =D
but it’s not JUST the culling. stealth is too long and CD’s are too short, even without the culling problem.
How would you know when culling plays a large part and is, unpredictable? I don’t agree they have the highest burst. I use P/D thief, and have never had any trouble with a burst thief. In fact, I think engineers have the best burst. I do agree they have the most mobility. Escape comes with mobility. I think thieves should have mobility. That’s what the thief is all about. Someone who “steals”(or in this case, attacks, mugs, whatever you want to call it) and gets away. Isn’t that in the name, thief? To take that away would fundamentally destroy the class(at least for us who don’t use burst). I wouldn’t mind a reduction on burst. I would prefer it not to happen, because it seems largely like a L2P issue for me, but since I don’t utilize burst, or never had a problem against it, I really wouldn’t notice at all. Just don’t nerf core thief fundamentals like mobility and stealth. Fix culling, then go from there.
I’ve only had trouble with one or two guardians(god knows what build they were using), for the most part. I run P/D, 20K HP, 30 into toughness, ect. I stack conditions and stayed ranged. Definitely do not go melee range versus a bunker guardian.
Art of Shadows. We’re a heavy WvW and dungeon thief guild in Sanctum of Rall. There’s only 9 thieves(we just started), but we play almost everyday, for quite a while. You will have no problem finding a thief party to roam with in WvW, shoot me a whisper or mail in game, and we can work things out :P

Until people actually stack some vitality and toughness(or, learn how to use effective defense skills), they will always have a problem with thief.
If you’re in Blackgate, and it was a Sanctum of Rall with a purple pistol, that’d be me. I did finish 1-2 people while everyone was busy with the zerging at QL, but I didn’t actually down anyone who wasn’t afk or else the revealed buff would destroy me >>
But yeah, I’ve also had this happen a few times. It’s an annoyance at best. Really funny on the thief’s end, though.
It’s not a 1v1 build(against a decent player, at least). Backstab thieves pray on squishies in WvW who are alone in the forest. Most wouldn’t even dare pick on a guardian. If everyone got some situational awareness and learned how to effectively use their class, we wouldn’t be having this problem.
I wouldn’t care if they nerfed DPS, because I don’t rely on direct damage. I just don’t want them to nerf core gameplay values like stealth. Some people are this forum are suggesting things like revealed lasting 1-10M, which is insane, lol.
First priority is situational awareness. That goes for everything. No thief is going to approach someone in stealth, because 99% of players don’t look behind them and you can walk right up. If you’re a thief yourself, pop signet of shadows and blind him, then scorpion wire. The goal is to make him waste his ini.
If you’re a warrior, run two handed hammer(for AOE knockdown/stun), or shield. Use endure pain when he get’s in range. He’ll waste the backstab entirely. Then proceed to hammer him, then take out whatever your dps weapon is and finish him. He won’t last. Greatsword whirl the second he goes into stealth.
If you’re a necro, take advantage of your external armor. Use it when he gets in range, then fear him and pop some AoE on top of yourself. Necro death ray(as I like to call it) destroys thieves in stealth.
Mesmer – Self explanatory
Guardian – Self explanatory
Engineer- Pop some elixirs and give yourself invulnerability when he gets in range. Drop your turrets on top(including net turret) and pop some AoE bombs on the ground.
Ranger – You could use let your pet take the damage, but honestly, rangers are horrible in WvW right now. They require some serious buffs. I haven’t figured out a way how rangers can counter any glass cannon, whether it be thief, warrior, engi.

Anyhow, this should work against 90% of glass cannon thieves, because 90% of glass cannon thieves are horrible 22222 spammers(dodge that, btw). If by the end of the day, you still lose to a certain thief, he’s probably just better than you, but like I just said, this guide is effective.
Thieves are naturally squishy, probably one of the squishiest classes. I run a 20KHP thief and I’m extremely squishy. Stealth is the one tool that completely makes up for that, and then some. But without stealth…my god we are squishy.
Wouldn’t work. As a thief, the second I enter stealth people just don’t stop hitting. I’m in melee range when I go into stealth. All that person has to do is tap 1 again before I can move away and boom, bye bye stealth. Stealth would be useless in combat at that point.
I am tired of this kind of inmoral threads, you are trying to defend the undefendable, thiefs are op and even if is an anet issue it is affecting us, the players who dont play as thieves. An action need to be made to make the game fair for everyone.
Can you make a valid argument instead of just saying thieves are OP? As in, a REAL valid argument, not just a picture of chat log with high numbers. Any class can do high numbers. Btw, if you’re alone in WvW, look behind your back every now and then. No thief approaches from behind in stealth. They save that for the engagement.
I don’t agree thieves are OP, but if anything, taking away burst would destroy it the least bit. Taking away thief mobility is edging away from the design. Anet said it themselves. Thieves are squirmy. That is the entire goal of the thief, to make a swarmy class. Not bursty class(although I don’t have a problem with backstab thieves, myself). Too take mobility and stealth away would turn a thief into a glass cannon warrior with 10K less HP. That’s the sole design of the thief. Mobility and the ability to stay squirmy. That’s why we have things like blind, signet of shadows, shadowstep. It was never stated for burst to be in the design, it just happened. Just like warriors are great in zergs, elementalists with their aoes, necro being the class you can’t escape from, guardian being the tank class, engineer being the support class, ranger being the ranged class, thieves are the swirmy class. What else would they be? A thief that steals gold from you?

Here’s how a warrior with 2,400 armour and 23K health fares in WvW vs a Backstab Thief in one simple picture.
At no point did either a thief or a red name tag render on my screen and as far as I knew I was moving through an empty field under swiftness spamming savage leap / whirlwind / rush. I was downed before my client even registered combat! Full health -> downed-> stealth stomped and I saw and heard nothing at any point. This is Tier1 WvW so no surprise some of these guys have this down to a very fine art.
I mean c’mon. If my client registers something I can react to before I die, maybe I can counter it (warriors have lots of options). I had zero chance.
All that shows is a picture of numbers and you, of course, dead. I can post a picture of my dead character with a 15K killshot on the log just as easily. Either
A) He got you from behind, which is your fault due to lack of situational awareness in WvW
B) From head on while you stood there
You’re a warrior. Pop endure pain when he gets in range and laugh. It really is THAT simple.

Imo it should follow general siege rules. I hear that there have been problems on some servers with golem stealing trolls.
That’s what it’s designed for. A counter to numbers. If both sides have full queues, no way you’re going to spawncamp them. This is a counter balance. I like it. Evens out servers with higher pop.
Unfortunately, if he’s good, you won’t catch him. I’m always the dude saying and giving advice on how to counter bs and p/d thieves, but a thief is a slippery class. Nothing is as mobile, theres little one can do when a thief decides to run.
Engi’s with zerker totally destroy thieves using grenade. Youtube some high damage engi builds, add some vit/toughness in there, and spam grenades. Grenades seriously damage me as full toughness/vit build. They would destroy a glass cannon thief.
Sometimes it kills me, sometimes it saves me.
So BG commander Kingrpg likes to spam laughs at me, then log out just as I down him, and when I asked him why, respond

They should just get rid of all stealth skills and instead replace it with the effect : Steal 1s. Make the thief a real thief, not some assassin/ninja.
CnD > whirling axe > repeat for as long as you have initiative and there is at least one warrior around.

If you can dodge his CnD, or even block is with aegis, eventually, his options are going to run out. Another really useful tool is the spin pull, that works great.
Another thing, make sure you use tab targetting when fighting thieves

And stealth plays minds tricks and annoys people. That’s the most annoying part of thief. If thief had no stealth you realize it would be nothing but a warrior? 5 stacks of bleed from my pistol is enough to make a glass cannon thief run. That’s how insanely squishy they are. I’m sure good players, no matter what class, don’t have trouble fighting backstab thieves.
I should really get around to making a guide around these forums with unique “counters” depending on what class people have. I can’t stand it when people call a thief OP because they saw a video of some strewn together clips of a glass cannon killing other glass cannons from behind. Even a freaking warrior using killshot, if from behind, would have knocked him down. If you run glass cannon you have no right to complain about dying fast to any class, whatsoever.
There is also that great 3/4 second animation of a thief casting C&D before they steal. Perfect time to ready your defence, counter attack or dodge.
Dodging CnD is a huge P/D killer, where timing is the most important, and missing a crucial CnD will kill you.
A lot of these posts assume the mesmer doesn’t know how a thief works. And assuming he does, the initial burst/backstab won’t do anything. They never do to a good player. Plus, a mesmer Shatter build can turn 20K into 0K in a matter of 2 seconds(shatter mesmers are scary, moreso than any other burst class, I’ve only ever seen one who uses it properly, and he was deadly), not regarding any sort of tank that he would also have due to being 30/30/30/30/30. IMO, they have a fair shot at each other, but if either fails to dodge/block the other’s burst, he will lose.
The only thing I want to see is “Culling issues permanently fixed”
then maybe some changes to p/p and bug fixes.

The players who can keep their cool(and assuming they don’t have extreme glass cannon) will win.
Otherwise, thief isn’t really OP. Theres the blah blah blah kill me before I can notice, but that can be done with almost every class using the right build. A warrior killshotting you from behind. You will not notice. Ele burst from behind? Not notice, never until you’re dead. The only advantage thief gets in this situation is being able to escape.
Besides, backstab is such a horrible unefficient build. I lolstomp those guys everytime I see them. It’s as simple as utilizing blocks, invulnerabilitys, blinds, external armors, ect.
I think the hatred is general it towards glass cannon builds, thief just gets the most hate because we’re glass clannon + mind tricks. Hypocritical part is that I find that most of the people complaining are super glass cannon themself. A proper tank, assuming you aren’t horrible, should roll any glass cannon, thief or no thief.
In WvW, a thief is very survivable using a roaming build…in zergs…not so much.
Looks like a P/D with some death blossum if you ask me. I hate how this build is becoming more popular. No longer can P/D condition be held a secret. Sooner or later every thief and their mother is going to be running P/D…I like it back when I was of the unique few running it

I am one of the “unique few”.Basically it doesn’t bother me that many people are starting to use it .They are terrible.They mostly spam Death Blossom until they run out of initiative…What bothers me more is that the big number of people using it will force the player mass to pay more attention to condition removal skills.
