Shattering is a skill that will come to you with time and practice.

But yeah, you always want to be moving during a fight. Even when you’re using sword/torch, there really shouldn’t ever be times when you’re just standing there attacking something. Distortion and Daze can help a lot if you use them at the right times. Daze is a really good interrupt in both pve and pvp settings and Distortion has saved my life far more times than I can count. But you need to be dodging and kiting too.

It will also take you a while before you have access to traits that will really help you. Mesmers tend to have a reputation of being really kittenty to level at low levels.

When people play for points, that’s when it becomes a problem. When people play for fights, then you’ll find enjoyment in that. I know the fairweather players will just give up, but entire guilds giving up is no excuse, imo. I know [TG] will try to find even fights and engage the best we can. I know that we try to challenge ourselves with Alamos and play Tom & Jerry when we’re outmanned. There is fun to be had in WvW, even when you’re outnumbered. T2 will be great for our SEA. I don’t think it’ll be great for our smaller guilds.

The responsibility for this does not just lie with the losing server. I was on the other night when DB SEA turned the last keep green then proceeded to spawn camp the four remaining players with siege. Guess what? We all logged off and they then had no one to fight. So were those players playing for points or for fights?

Just before that I thought I would have some fun “even when [I was] outnumbered”. So I walked up to some DB players outside spawn and danced. A DB player started hitting me so I /cried and went /no without fighting back but he kept on until I was down – then another came up to stomp me like he was desperate to get a piece of the action.

You can’t Alamo with 4 people against 40 and when those 40 are so impersonal and humourless there is no fun to be had, especially when it has been going on for weeks.

Because I could waltz up to a group of 40 of your guys, do a couple emotes and just… not get killed.

Calvin, i understand what you’re saying and honestly you’re right. However, DB went through a very similar experience not that long ago so lets not forget how it feels to be on the other side of this equation. People do have a right to put their feelings and opinions out there.

You are right, but there is a way to share opinions. All I’m saying is… it’s okay to share feelings and opinions as long as we’re civil. Personal attacks on these boards are not very welcome. It’s a game.

This is how we dealt with it back then. Many people felt cheated, we all felt let down, the server crashed from T3 to T6, but we didn’t create so much drama.

Our overnight coverage is already in place, as you said, so of course NA guilds are the most appropriate transfers. It’s where we are lacking, and where we need people to keep us in tier 2 instead of bouncing back and forth for the next two months.

Hate to tell you but……..in t1 and t2 portal bombs are so last year. They wait for some idiots to try it and just crush them ( believe me being from tc i have seen it). So you may want to try something else if your server ever wants to be competitive in wvw.

Portal bombs have their uses.
They’re just not often used in ways that would actually be beneficial.

And TSYM portal bombed us all week while SoS was falling from tier 1; so portal bombs can’t be that last year.

This. Dragonbrand was able to close a 50+k gap on BP and SoS after being trounced for most of the week in our respective matchups. Maguuma was able to edge out 1st place out of nowhere, if I recall correctly, against us in the lower tiers. Yes, coverage plays a factor, but ultimately it comes down to how much people want it. We could’ve easily “given up” while we were behind.

We never stopped trying against KN, TC and FA during their visits in T3 – our numbers were just not enough, but we were out in force all the time.

Guess some servers are just cut from a different cloth.

Perspective is always an interesting thing. YB has now been stuck in T3 for almost 2 months. During this time we early on fought back from being distant 3rd to SoS to beating them. We have fought back from being distant 3rd to mag to at least closing the gap. During all this time we have faced a server in DB where we had zero chance of ever competing for the weekly score. For 2 months we have fought through this, and during our prime time, done what we can and even now with DBs new guilds, we fight. I would love to see what DBs reaction really would have been if faced with 2 months of no real chance. No way to really tell, but I am pretty kitten proud of YB showing up for 2 months when there was no chance overall

DB took almost that long to even stabilize after we lost our guilds to SoS in October.

So you actually can see what happens when DB loses by huge margins for 2 months straight: We start winning again.
At least you guys have mostly been in the same tier the whole time, we went down to tier 6

Thursday a.m. pretty much sums up T3 for the last 2 months. DB owns 95% of the maps, and yet they still have 30+ in EB, with 15+ siege, camping the spawn point. This is what T3 is right now, and is simply sad

You should login around 7-11PM EST, if possible. You’ll see lots of exciting, even matches during that time.

This was true for a while. Now sadly even this is no longer true. Logged into EB at 9pm EST last night and we had the outmanned buff. It used to be as you said, good fights, even numbers on a couple maps, but I think at least for YB people have just given up for now.

I remember when JQ posted a whole thread to show off their +695 in tier 1

I’m running a direct damage mesmer build with Sword/Focus as my primary damage dealing and a Staff to use defensively.

Put some toughness in your build and make use of your defensive utilities and you will survive fine in melee range, as long as you don’t stay in melee range all the time, dip in and out between melee range and like 900. You have a lot of in-battle mobility as a mesmer.
Use it.

Torch is really underrated for mesmers.

The extra stealth is a lot of fun, I was running a torch/stealth based build a few weeks ago.

The only problem is that Focus is just so useful in WvW that it overshadows other offhands.

Heh, DB’s rise is inevitable now (whether that is a good thing or a bad you’ll find out soon enough), I’m sure your SEA crew is ecstatic about the upcoming competition from TC and FA. It is unfortunate us Mags(or Yak’s for that matter) just can’t match your size during that time period.

It seemed only yesterday where we had that great Christmas week battle between our three servers(some of the most fun I had). We (DB and Mag) both fell and rose,to some extent, and both somehow came out of the onslaught of Kaineng , Tarnished Coast, and Fort Aspenwood alive.
Had some good 1v1’s, small skirmishes, and large scales battles/defenses. As I won’t be able to play until reset good luck to DB may your endeavors in T2 be full of TC and FA loot bags. Maybe we will meet again one day on even terms.

As to Kaineng it seems their meteroic rise to T1 has lost steam. Hopefully them dropping will lead to an even slightly better matchup. I still anticipate KN has a fairly large SEA presence even with WM leaving. Well, I think Friday’s reset will be interesting

Lol, it’s quite a love-story. Besides SoS, i’ve always seen Mag as our arch-nemesis – DB and Mag always seem to find each other in the same tier one way or another. Kinda creepy . . . .

But the victories over SoS were quite satisfying after so much time.

I’d say it really depends… how good you can get at this game.

When I was solo roaming in WvW with full Glass Cannon shatter gear/traits back when DB was in the lower tiers, I felt pretty kitten invincible in anything up to 3v1.
I am, by no means, a pro at this game. But if you’re competent actually reacting to what your opponent is doing, Mesmers have a lot of fun things they can do. And in the right setup can absolutely melt opponents in small group/1v1 combat.

The glass cannon gear doesn’t hold up as well in larger fights where you really don’t have the option of avoiding everything. I switched to Rabids for a while and am wearing an assortment of equipment at the moment.

If you’re going to be focusing solely on PvE, Mesmer may not be the best out of the Light Armor classes technically, but can still be very useful.
I tend to put my Glass Cannon gear back on in PvE and go for dps. Blink/Distortion/Stealth/Blurred Frenzy/Well timed dodges/CC up the kitten make it pretty easy to avoid damage in pve entirely, so I’ve never seen the need to build defensively for PvE.

As a closing note,
I just reread most of my post and realized how blatantly biased I sound towards glass cannon gear.
There are a lot of ways to build a mesmer, and I’ve exhausted just about all my gold in the past few weeks buying armor/weapons/sigils/runes/skins to test out new builds. You can get pretty creative in what you want to do,

But full GC gear is a nice introduction to getting the class mechanics down and learning how to chain attacks for spikes before branching out and learning the really cool things we can do.

I can confirm that TC emotes all the time. I don’t know why people think they’re any more classy than any other server.

Their most vocal forum members tend to be, when averaged out, better sportsmanship-py than most server’s most vocal forum members are.

Helps their server reputation a lot, but I suspect that their actual playerbase isn’t any better or worse than many other servers.

On one hand, it’s hard to notice the difference between using and not using the weapon cooldown traits, because it’s only a few seconds and you’re usually not counting seconds in your head while you’re in combat.

But the way I look at it (And while I say this, I stopped using the GS Trait because the CDs are already pretty low and there are better traits to take), in any PvP combat situation, getting to use key weapon skills a few seconds earlier in a fight could drastically change the outcome.

I think (one of) WvW’s biggest problem right now is that matches are predictable to this level. In most tiers, 19 weeks out of 20 you know exactly who is going to win just by knowing who your opponents are. That isn’t competitive

Even with culling on, I’ve never liked that nameplates show above anyone within range. There’s virtually no room in wvw at all to sneak around without a big line of red text giving away your position.

There is something basically wrong with that.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not a troll and respond one time seriously. After that you’re on your own.

Illusion of Life rallies you from the Downed state and gives you a limited amount of time to kill something. If you do not kill something in that time, you die immediately.

Some time ago I used just Greatsword for PvE with basic glass cannon gear.

It works fine.
If you trait it, the cooldowns are all low enough that you’ll get by.
For the longest time the only reason I switched weapons was for swiftness from focus.
You’ll get by fine that way.
I never found range to be much of an issue with it, between Blink and Illusionary Wave you can keep your distance.

With that said,
Once you do get used to switching weapons frequently, you will realize how effective it is and, if no other reason, how handy it is to be able to use other weapons while your primary weapon skills are on cooldown.
My #1 skill on weapons are often my least used skills.

Have you tried using the linking system? As in, shift click a POI at a tower, or a WP in a keep.
People catch on to the attack/defend idea or whatever is needed pretty quickly with that.

We have a large spanish speaking population on my server, and we get through the language barrier that way sometimes.
Just a thought.

^^ This. Keep in mind that the place names have different names depending on the language settings. For example, Dreadfall Bay is Bahía Salto Aciago in Spanish, Baie du Noir déclin in French, and Schreckensfall-Bucht in German. Shadaran Hills is Colinas Shadaran in Spanish, Collines de Shadaran in French, and Shadaran-Hügel in German.

So if you just type stuff like “Bay” and “Hills” in /map or /team chat, a non-English speaker may not know what you are referring to. When you link the POIs and WPs, the game automatically translates the names to the other languages. It’s MUCH easier to work through the language by linking POIs and WPs instead of just typing the names/nicknames.

The asian commanders on Dragonbrand tend to know enough English to use basic keywords like “push”, “stack”, “hide”, etc. and link waypoints pretty frequently. In addition to listing their commands in WhateverAsianDialectTheyUse as well.

You obviously don’t get a full breakdown of their strategy in teamchat, but it’s enough to follow them and be useful.

If the Polish people on Blacktide refuse to do this, I would not consider them good teammates to begin with.

Fallback models are great for what they’re used for,
But not being able to tell when someone is stomping you is absolutely not acceptable.

I don’t care as much about the revive animation, at least you can tell it’s happening.

I think all of them are rather negligible in their effect, with the exception of extra supply and cannon mastery (Cannon mastery includes increased damage (Take down walls 5% faster) and wider bast radius (Easier to hit multiple walls at once).

Ballista mastery might be useful, but it’s largely anti-personnel.

I’unno, I never use siege anyway so I’ll probably just save up for extra supply and ignore everything else.
