This is one of the most gamble-y slot-machine-y MMOs around right now.
(Ecto merchant, mystic forge, black lion chests. Hell, even loot tables are kittened)
Ever try to get a precursor from the mystic forge? That is straight up gambling, people have lost their entire fortunes doing exactly that. I’ve lost fortunes doing that. There’s no popup warning you about it.
This is one example, and it’s been in the game since LAUNCH.
Three years now, we’ve had gambling as a MAJOR COMPONENT in getting a legendary weapon; something that was an endgame goal to many people for a long time.
You keep saying “this is the first time gambling has been in this game”
And you keep being wrong.
You should just give it a rest. It isn’t going to happen, no matter what you think. Maybe in another 3 years with the next DLC, but for the foreseeable future, it ain’t going to happen.
But if I were to give it a rest, I am certain that it will never happen.
So I’ll just keep reminding ANet that I’d like to get a third mainhand option for my Mesmer (preferably pistol) instead of getting even more offhand weapons.
I’m all on board for this type of logic.
Definitely need mainhand pistol, definitely need to not let Anet forget about it.
Would have taken mainhand pistol over shield for HoT any day.
My understanding is,
And please don’t quote me or make decisions based on this information,
That you can get your refund to disable your game account, it won’t be banned or anything, then prepurchase HoT to get access to the core game and re-enable your account. So you shouldn’t lose your progress by getting a refund.
If I find the post I read that outlined this information, I will link it here.
EDIT: Apparently it was the blog post and I was beaten to the information.
You can still cast it if your target is out of range. (I just tested it)
So, the scenario you described is still perfectly attainable, you just have to target your enemy first.
Hell, this means you can aim it easier now because it’ll just appear between you and your target.Takes away the variability to cast it onto a group of allies however without an enemy on the opposite side of them. The ability to point and shoot in WvW was invaluable in the hands of the right mesmer.
This change… is bad. Doesn’t make sense either. It wasn’t a problem in need of fixing.
See my amendment to my original reply.
I think we agree on most all points.
I just wanted to point out the original scenario you cited is still possible. :P

EDIT: Though I would still prefer they just made it ground targeted to solve the “appear at an unspecified location” issue. Literally would let us specify the location.
If I remember the correctly from discussions with our server programmer, this is something we could add as a “nice to have” check in the matchmaking system, but I don’t think it could be something that would be 100% required to start a game. As you mentioned, making this a requirement for roster creation would add a considerable amount of time to the queue.
Not to mention every match has 10 players and there’s only 8 professions. 4v4, anetpls.
“Nice to have check” this is a pretty new one lol
Are “Soon” “When it’s ready” and “Looking at it” times over?
Hope skyhammer is already in the “Nice to remove check” list…at least
I think he meant the underlying filtering system would have it as a “Nice to have” check.
As in, the matchmaking system would try to adhere to balance/nodouble rules but it wouldn’t hold up a match if it couldn’t find it. A sort of compromise between the “We want balanced matchups” and “We want short queue times” people.
Not that ArenaNet would consider it a “Nice to have” feature.
Increasing the number of boons removed would make this a brilliant skill, especially if it prioritised stability.
I had not considered this.
I would even settles for “Remove 1 boon, prioritize stability”
It would definitely make it actually have a very solid purpose.
I’m sure people use builds without it. But likely not much that’s actually viable outside of open world pve.
Dueling is just incredibly useful for just about/every build.
Even builds that don’t need Deceptive Evasion often make great use of on-crit effects, and power builds don’t do enough raw damage to sacrifice crit dama—ferocity and precision.
Then even condition builds use on-crit bleeds for a free damage condition in almost every case.
Heh, I’m the one that knocked you off the edge there.
And I’m pretty sure Wunzy only play engie on skyham. That’s called adapting.Yeah. It’s up to the players to all learn to play engi because one class dominates on a map, not the devs’ jobs to balance the map so that people can play all classes, right?
Mesmer is actually the best class for skyhammer, but barely anyone plays it.
Mesmer requires a lot more precision gameplay than engineer to be as effective in skyhammer. Like everything we do.
I have had a lot of luck with a 4/4/6/0/0 interrupt build with chaotic interruption.
It’s got the tools to handle a lot of encounters, but your success with it directly related with how well you can handle the build.
Heavy condition bursts and lots of aoes are still a problem. But that’s true of most mesmer builds. If you land the first 4~ interrupts against someone though it’s pretty much game.
I would really like a blast finisher on the skill, like many others do.
But the multi-stab sounds really cool too.
Definitely keep it as a skill shot though (The manual targetting is great), I’d just like it to feel more important when it gets used.
I know this doesn’t fit into every build,
But I’ve been using Air runes, focus and 6 in Chaos (They all come with how I play my 4/4/6/0/0 build anyway) and that provides perma-swiftness with just the heal and temporal curtain.
Air runes are very useful for power mesmers to begin with, and with movement speed increases being capped (Just tested this last week, only using swiftness I was running the same speed as a thief kitted out with every passive speed boost + swiftness), I’ve never had a problem keeping up with people.
I honestly give up less using Air runes than I would giving up one of my very-valuable utility slots.
(the amount of times I have had people ask me if I am running pu when regen appears on my buff bar)
Despite being a Power based Interrupt build, I frequently get accused of being a condi based PU build.
People…
Try playing full glass cannon, no PU, and still getting called a PU baddie.
This is what PU has done to our reputation.
Well,
I’m in zerkers and use CI instead of PU.
So, that’s what i’m playing.
The matchmaking system is kittened, I don’t know how Anet are satisfied with this.
Nothing makes a person want to play pvp less than being forced to play with complete idiots all day.
Seems like not a lot of people care.
No, people care(d).
We have been complaining about matches starting 4v5 since solo queue was originally introduced (last year). Probably longer in older tpvp game modes too, but I didn’t follow the PvP community much before solo queue.
Anet doesn’t fix it.
Many people have given up complaining.
(the amount of times I have had people ask me if I am running pu when regen appears on my buff bar)
Despite being a Power based Interrupt build, I frequently get accused of being a condi based PU build.
People…
you may or may not have noticed but you only have two dodges in this game
conditions can pretty much be applied by autoattacks
so no, you will not be dodging condition spam. you can dodge condition bursts, yes (e.g. sig of spite), but good luck trying to dodge a player applying conditions with literally every single skill they use. you see, i’m not a fan of tryhard “learn to dodge” when it’s physically impossible to dodge the sheer volume of conditions applied to you.
Other than the big bursts, most condition spam isn’t enough of a threat that it can’t be cleansed, healed, or waited out.
There are also plenty of other ways to actively defend against attacks (Blocks, immunity, non-dodge-evasion, terrain blocking, sometimes even just strafing or going out of range. They all serve the same purpose).
If you’re literally ONLY using dodges to defend against attacks then, yeah, you are correct; you won’t last very long. But there are a lot of ways in this game to just \not get hit\ and many of them aren’t limited by your endurance bar.
EDIT: I am getting off topic though. I’ve never really considered condition mesmers to be much of a threat, so I’m mostly speaking from a reference point of fighting other particularly condition heavy classes.
(edited by EnRohbi.2187)
1) Has High burst damage
Dodge
2) Has High condi spam, mainly confusion, bleed, burn
Dodge
3) Has protection/aegis on and generally reduces any non-condi damage by half
Boon strip
4) Constant Stealth
Prediction
5) Constant Healing (while in stealth)
Boon Strip
6) Million of clones no matter how many AoE spam there is
Don’t kill the clones
7) Uses GS
Stay as close as possible
8) Constant Condi Removal
Lol, please tell me how this is done on mesmer
Edit: Eh, is perhaps he’s running mantra heal and mantra cleanse. With condi cleanse on heal. If that’s the case. Condi Pressure would be my tactic. Exhaust his charges and interrupt.Putting aside how having all these things is impossible on mesmer. That would be my strategy.
did you seriously just tell someone to dodge condition spam?
do you even pvp?
Conditions have to be applied by an attack, most (all?) of which can be dodged.
If you dodge the attack, you don’t suffer the conditions.
So yes.
He suggested to dodge.
Let’s face it.
Mesmer is easier to get into PvP than most professions, because your clones distract enemies while you can learn how to play.
This is true especially if you’re fighting begginers. The detargetting and multiple characters makes it all overwhelming, and by the time they detect the real you they are already dead.
Now, I don’t have much experience in late competitive/skilled play, but I’m assuming this changes with time, experience and effort.
To sum up, it’s the Mesmer’s unique clone ability that confuses them and the fact they need to keep targeting the real one that makes new players frustrated when they play against one.
This is the thing.
Specifically the part in bold.
Mesmers tend to roll over beginners. We’re not a class that’s particularly friendly to people that don’t know how we work.
Most people, once they reach the level of “competent” in a competitive game mode, can deal with mesmers without too much trouble.
But I think we’re forever doomed to be flamed by noobs.
but playing AI based class takes skills guys. You have to calculate for how much time you can afk until your AI kills everything.
Seriously what else do you want from us? I play berserker : Takes no skill, phantasm op. I play bunker: You have no skill you just never die. I play condi : Pu mesmer Op nerf, no skill. By this point people only want me to stand still and bend over. I think I should just roll a warrior or necro or ranger, or guard and either Zoo pet the whole place, or Stun or spam bow, cus I no longer have cred. This , please Anet remove my phantasms and give me an actual leap without having to target something, give me 25% speed trait or signet, give me a trait like eles or warriors to cleanse cripple , chill, immobilized etc… Please Anet gift me the power to have actual attacks and not kitten clones and phantasms for heavy damage. So i can finally hex people to death and not get a big rant on how my class is Op.
Seriously , this is nothing new, its the new rune sets and might stacking, my phantasm hit some poor guy for 11k when i went down, do you know how much 11k is?
On another note, I wouldn’t mind giving up my phantasms and clones, for some viable attacks that don’t require targetting, actual legit cleanse and speed traiting. Oh and while we on that track, less RNG spam on conditions and more trusty reliable fields , ty all
Like what if mesmers were a hybrid of thief and warrior Initiative and Adrenaline, and our skills were more like hexes, and once in a while we could proc a phantasm to do a one time burst while we could actually use our weapons
Oh look at that! Now you know how warriors feel! Have fun!
Mesmers have been being complained about like this since Warriors were free kills in PvP. This isn’t new at all.
Like back when Phantasms could be cast without line of sight, or when confusion did full damage in WvW.
Inexperience isn’t a crime, far from it. But forcing yourself into a ranked game when there is a clear alternative more appropriate for your experience just because you selfishly want the better reward, that is.
The problem with this attitude is that the only thing you learn from hotjoin is how to navigate the map at a basic level.
None of the actual tactics that matter in ranked games are applied in hotjoins. The only place to learn these is from solo queue or someone mentoring you.
I played only hotjoin for a long time before I started solo queuing and I assure you I was still completely lost, and probably useless, for the first 5~10 matches.
No. No PvP patches until April.
You better watch yourself sir or you will get an infraction with posts like this.
Arenanet has had just about enough with trolls like you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poe%27s_law
Since I have no idea if you’re being serious or not, I’ll just say I was honestly under the impression the patch was supposed to be today. Was that the case, and then it was pushed back? Or was I entirely mistaken?
Both. Kind of.
The patch is on the 18th (Next Tuesday), not today. So you were mistaken on that part.
But the patch next week is only a maintenance patch (See last post). As Anet said some ambiguous things that lead the community to believe the 18th was the feature patch. When they came out and said it was, in fact, not the feature patch people got kittened.
Next Tuesday is the two-weekly patch.
And it’s only a maintenance patch next week, don’t expect anything “big” for some time after that.

I had read it before responding, thank you. (Like, why would someone be reading replies if they hadn’t read the first post?)
I also agree with the entire thing.
But you obviously were unaware of the Edit function, so I wanted to make sure you knew it was there.

The phantasm on GS may be easy to dodge in 1v1s, but gets considerably harder to avoid in team fights, and has great cleave.
As far kitten goes, it is significantly better than Pistol’s interrupt (Being AoE and a knockback. Controlling where your opponent is standing gives you a huge amount of power in a fight. Also, being knocked down requires time to get back up), and Chaos Storm is (While a great interrupt), not reliable for that purpose given that Daze is applied randomly.
I recently dropped the staff for greatsword because I got sick of using the staff for nothing but Chaos Storm and Phase Retreat. The Phantasm on it does good single target damage if the opponent has a lot of conditions, it tracks properly, doesn’t get blocked, and happens to crit on the single hit it has. Overall, recently I’ve started viewing the Staff as a crutch for most mesmer builds that is no longer a neccessity.
Basically,
The GS isn’t the best weapon in the world for 1v1s, because as you’ve said, has some pretty obvious telegraphs about avoiding the best skills it has. It shines in team fights where the opponent can’t devote all their attention to you though, and you actually get to land the iBerserkers and Illusionary Wave.
Also, remember, only one person need stand on point to prevent capping/decapping. If you’ve got a bunker already there doing their job, get some kittening distance and nuke from off point.
Gasmic does lose against Mesmer.
As a Mesmer who’s killed him, I can attest to this fact.
Some more old friends:
Panic
Trait: Domination Grandmaster (replaces Confounding Suggestions)
Grants a chance to spread control effects on 4 more targets in a 360 range around the original target.
- Daze – 1s
- Stun – 1s
- Knockdown – 1s
- Knockback – 1s
- Launch – 1s
- Float – 1s
- Sink – 1s
- Internal Cooldown: 10s
- Chance to trigger: 25%
I have always wanted to see Panic make a return, it was one of my favourites in GW1.
That’s a nice idea for the implementation. I had always envisioned it as an AoE Elite with roughly the radius of Time Warp, but would transfer control affects within it’s aoe to all other (3-5 other?) enemies within the circle.
Team Arena is regarded as the more competitive queue, hence the higher rewards.
You can also solo queue into Team Arena (And many people do. Solo Arena does not often provide the best matches), so the rewards are still well within your reach as a solo player.
^You can dodge Moa easily. You can not dodge your opponent’s stealth. You can chose to not use Plague or Lich form if you play a Minionmaster (in this case you’d probably often use Golem anyway?). You can not chose that your opponent doesn’t use stealth.
Most moa morphing mesmers do so from stealth, so wildy dodging when your opponent enters stealth is in no way a counter to moa morph.
And yet that’s how people are expected to dodge backstabs from thieves.
Dodging randomly and hoping to get lucky has /always/ been how you deal with getting hit from stealth in gw2
The second option actually sounds kinda fantastic.
PU Mesmers are good for WvW roaming and nothing else. They have zero chasing ability and their burst (ie. Illusionary Counter and confusion) depends on you attacking them. Just ignore them. I don’t see much point in balancing around a troll build that’s essentially useless in every aspect of the game other than roaming.
The fact that they have 0 chasing ability is wrong.
Most PU use Traveler rune (which is extremely good for them, as both the boon duration and conditions duration are really nice). Plus they have blink, an immob from sword or another blink from staff. They are actually quite good at chasing. They are not like thieves or warriors or gs rangers, but they definitely don’t lack out of combat mobility.
That blink from staff you are referring to actually blinks you away from your target – defensive blink
Phase Retreating forward is insanely easy,
There are even multiple ways to do it.
AoE limit is not about mechanical computations, it is flat a balance problem (although limitations might have been a consideration). Epidemic used to have no AoE limit, and it was complete BS to be able to turn one bleed of 140 DPS into 30 bleeds for 4200 DPS every 15 seconds.
tell that to the WvW devs, who say every other day that AoE limit is a technical problem that can’t be fixed without exponentially increasing the lag.
though i’m pretty sure they know more than you.
Yeah, devs have stated more times than I can count that the AoE cap is, indeed, a technical limitation.
There were a few skills earlier in the game that were more cleave than gtaoe that were unaffected by the 5 target limit; I believe those have all been patched to observe the limit since then.
But it remains that AoE limits have not always been there.
And yes it has, this is just straight false. It just wasn’t on every single skill that could hit multiple targets at launch.
(edited by EnRohbi.2187)
What are you talking about? sPvP is instanced point capture. RvR is open world death match. Complete opposites. And we’ve done plenty of 10vs60+, it works. There’s just no point to it because death means nothing in WvW.
You must have missed all the towers, camps, keeps and Stonemist Castle.
WvW isn’t deathmatch at all, it’s point capture (Even uses the same circles as sPvP you have to stand in) with walls to break down first.
People who think WvW is a deathmatch are trying to play a gamemode that doesn’t exist.
I kind of agree,
Lately I’ve been wishing hotjoin was completely replaced with an unrated solo queue.
Yes.. soloque serious business..
Maybe now that the only classes in tpvp are Ranger Necro Warrior Guardian Thief
Not bashing,
I main a Mesmer too and play more tpvp than hotjoins, regardless of the current trends.
Just saying, there’s a lot of people that don’t think any builds from our class belong in tournaments right now, so calling the PU build a hotjoin build isn’t really saying anything. :P
sorry to intrude but…
anyone ever experience downstate on a necro ? ^^
Yeah, that animation they get kinda sucks for them now.
Their downed state is the easiest one in the game to deal with, you get like 1.5 seconds to react to that Fear.
The PU build is a hotjoin build… I don’t play hotjoin :/
I don’t need the extra second of stealth… I’ve played like 20 builds this week and I usually swap around builds weekly and I’ve found the 20/20/00/30 to be the best for what I do.
Mesmers are pretty frowned upon outside of hotjoin right now in general.
Your 20/20/0/0/30 build is a hotjoin build too.
You’d think no one in this thread ever dealt with a mesmer before.
8+ seconds to stomp a mesmer is a crazy exaggeration, considering it is not much more difficult to stomp mesmers on the first try than any other class. In fact, I find Ele’s much more annoying to stomp than mesmers.
If one of your teammates starts a stomp on a mesmer, start your own stomp about 2 seconds after his. The mesmer will stealth to dodge his and reappear to get hit by yours. Don’t forget this is a team game.
Alternatively, you can lure the mesmer into using their stealth skill early by either DPSing them down first or canceling your first stomp and restarting it. (Either one requires some amount of luck/timing, but that is true with dealing with more than just a mesmer’s downed state.)
The trait system for mesmers is pretty lol.. it doesn’t matter what you do 20/20/00/30 is going to be the best..
You want bursty condi damage? 20/20/00/30
You want bursty Physical Damage?20/20/00/30
You want Condi remove stuff and survivability?? 20/20/00/30
Errrrrrrrrrrrr.
I haven’t used 20/20/00/30 in months, and am very glad of that.
You’ve clearly missed all the 20/20/30/0/0 builds going around since the Prismatic Understanding buff.
My personal trait build is 20/30/20/0/0 and still does a better job than 20/20/0/0/30 ever did.
hmm my team actually won xD
Excellent!
Ok,
we all know solo arena are a joke (4mesmer vs guard/nec/ranger/thief/engi is a joke)
we all know solo arena leaderboards are a jokeSo now,
can we have the option the leave the arena?Really why should we wait 10 mins when we are 3 vs 5 with low ranks vs ranks40+?
solo arena are the worst example of bad game design i ever seen in 12 years mmo
4 mesmers?
Didn’t play much spvp before soloq, and I don’t think I will keep playing.
Who won?
lol
I was really hoping the Mesmer team won,
But somehow,
For some reason,
I knew it couldn’t be.

Oh my god, Borlis Pass.
You guys might get me into WvW this week, I can’t even remember the last time we faced you.
So I’m gonna let mos do it for me.
It was December.
Playing mesmer, I rarely, if ever see someone capably dodge all 3 of my phantasms. If zerker misses, the other 2 iduelists won’t.
I personally dropped mesmer because I found them easy mode. You aren’t required to keep target. Once cast the phantasms automatically target the right person and will wait patiently if they’re in stealth. They never go for turrets, and they never go for clones if the first cast is correct.
Unlike other pets, they recharge on cast, no death.
Any build that has pets do the main damage and can be used in a fire and forget manner is unsuited to PvP play. They require little skill beyond cast your damage and now evade as best you can until you need to recast. When compared with warrior who has to maintain melee ranged, dodge heavy damage when they see it, snare, heal and back to maintain melee range against professions with passive speed boosts..it highlights just how easy mode mesmers are. No skill. Brainless and to me personally, no fun because of it. Just my 2 cents worth.
If you were managing to get all three Phantasms out at all, you are fighting noobs.
I can’t remember the last time that either me or any mesmer I’ve fought actually managed to produce three phantasms before any of them, or the mesmer, died.
Especially Duelist, if you’re popping out Duelists and no one’s killing them, the problem is your opponent not the class mechanic.
What all of this has to do with Gernade kit? And Turret too?
Turret is useless. They don’t move. They take Ults to take. They are easy to dodge. They random attack nearby enemy, not the one you are working on.
Yeah, see how ridiculous it is when people complain about things that don’t need to be complained about…?
If you don’t want a phantasm to attack more than once, kill it. Just like if you don’t want a spirit ranger to be able to insta-res his team, kill his spirit Elite, or if you don’t want to get hit by Net Turrets you destroy the turret.
These are only a few examples.
The biggest problem with pets in this game is that nobody seems to realize that you don’t have to tunnel-vision the actual player to beat him.
Cleave the pets first.
If someone’s entire build is supported by pets, destroying the pets will do you well.
I had two matches yesterday in Skyhammer solo queue that were full 5v5s where the entire enemy team just quit and idled for the whole match.
I like the map but the community reaction to it at this point is a little ridiculous.
The people arguing against dodging aren’t making any sense. If we say “mesmer don’t have a lot of damage if you can dodge it” then we could say the same for almost anything. “s/d thieves don’t have a lot of damage outside larc strike, make it undodgeable” “GS guards don’t have a lot of damage outside whirling wrath, make it 600 radius and undodgeable”. Why should any class get unavoidable skills?
Well,
Why do you believe it makes any sense that you should get two chances to dodge our attacks (At phantasm spawn and their actual attack) when we should only get one chance to dodge yours (When your damage occurs)? You’re supposed to dodge the damage, not the setup.
It is that way with every profession.Maybe i dont understant what you tried to say. Are you saying that is fair to have to dodge two times when you only use 1 skill/utility? Did i get this right?
You did not get that right.
It is fair the way it is now, as you get one opportunity to dodge damage (The phantasm’s attack), just like I have one opportunity to dodge damage applied by you (Your attack). If you could dodge the summoning of a phantasm to negate the spawn entirely, you would have two chances to dodge the same attack. As you would be allowed to miss dodging the summon and still avoid damage by dodging the first attack.
Ok. If only the attack of the phantasm can cause damage to the other player thats fair for me. Thanks for the answer.
But the phantasm should only attack once.
Mine usually get shattered or killed before they get a second attack anyway, so it wouldn’t be as big of a problem as it sounds.
But I still disagree.
Phantasms are pretty much the only damage we get if we’re letting them attack multiple times (Since they die the second we shatter), a mesmer that relies on Phantasms for damage pretty much drops the phantasm (Maybe swaps weapons and drops the second one) and then has nothing to do but CC or survival for at least the next 15~20 seconds until the CD is up.
In a scenario such as you describe, a mesmer would have nearly zero damage output for 20 seconds just because their phantasm’s attack got dodged. This is already the case for a lot of mesmers when their illusions are killed (Which is a far cry from hard to do with all the AoE in this game, especially recently). A mesmer’s value to fights is greatly diminished when all they can do is kite or teleport for half of it.
