Also – as powerful as Warrior healing is – it’s all over time. Any second they’re at full health, or under the effect of poison is Healing Per Second lost – Two bursts of high DPS will take them down while completely mitigating that sustain. A guardian, meanwhile, can negate bursts with more frequent blocks and escaping pain zones with sudden movement(wings/SoB/JI), and recover from a full burst near-instantly with their heals.

Well you still got double endure pain to deal with that to a certain extent.

Just from a game mechanics POV, I think that WvW should reward the server most, when it is able to do “strategic tasks” on the map & group play over individual skill and zerg vs. zerg.

Let me explain:
>> sPvP has its focus on tactical movement on the (relatively small) map. WvW should be about gaining key locations for a benefit in attacking or defending the next position.
>> Roaming should not be about waiting in stealth (like Ghost Thief did for so many months) and kill people running by a choke points. Roaming should be playing the supply game, knowing enemy movements and taking structures that are undefended because of negligence.
>> Guilds should have a bigger impact on active fighting, not just claiming a structure.

Things used to be like that in the beginning, but these days there is simply no need to care anymore.
We used to have roamers constantly capping camps and killing dollys. And on the other hand we had groups defending said targets.
But this part of the warfare is only needed and useful if you are going to commit to a long lasting siege fight (which imo used to be one of the best ascpects of wvw). What do people do these days? If you can’t take a structure on the 2nd or 3rd attempt you just give up. Nobody these days commits to a 5-6hrs supply and siege fight just to take down a garrison when they can ktrain all around the map.
This aspect had also been entirely eliminated for some time with the release of HoT and the implementation of auto-upgrades until they went back to the dolly system.
Also supplies play a lot smaller role, because a) people can carry a lot more supplies (15 used to be the max, not 25) and you can just have things like supply drops or even simple border hopping which simply didn’t work with full maps back then. You had no supplies to drop like 6-7 sup rams on every single gate.

Guilds used to work together a lot more. I for example played on Seafarer’s rest back then which was famous for it’s many guilds. It was a common sight to have 2-3 guilds@20-30 guys per border so of course they had to work together, coordinating many small attacks, forming one big attack, baiting and flanking the enemy and so on.
But unfortunately over time balance turned out to favor bigger groups more and more. You could more easily rally, you had the aoe spread over more targets and most importantly you had better ways to distribute stability after it’s change.

People just stopped caring after some time. They eventually realised that there is no point dedicating hours upon hours to getting some virtual points which is why, from my limited experience at least, players started to focus either on ktraining or active search for combats, with the latter being much rarer.
This also had to do with the effects of nightcap. If you actually still cared about points you’d barely make any while just trying to take enemy keeps for hours upon hours. And should you manage to do it you may hold it for 1-2 hours only to go to bed and find the entire border t3 the next morning again.

Something like nightcap and the sheer advantage of blobs are core problems that have been known for years now. There is no point in merging servers to fight your dwindling population if you don’t fix what actually drives people away from the game…otherwise you will keep merging and merging until you are left with not more than one matchup.

HoT showed very obviously that the WvW devs have no connection whatsoever to the WvW community which, as long as this is the case, makes WvW bound to fail in the long run no matter what they try to do.

You are not really counting condition or vault Spammer as viable builds are you? D/p is basically all you got these days. Before hot you still had s/d but that died with daredevil.

If this existed there would be no place for a backline left in zerg fights because they could just get bursted by 2 thiefs.

I would definitely like to try it in roaming but it just doesn’t work for zerg fights.

Also imagine the increased power of siege if your people would straight up die from it.

Everyone quit due to the balance changes, or the lack of. We played the same boring specs vs the same boring specs for at least 6 months. And we wait eagerly for a balance patch, and nothing changes at all.

Its like a kid at christmas gets super excited about whats to come because he never gets given anything except at christmas.

Then for christmas he gets literally nothing. It makes people demoralised and give up on the game.

So now that the game is actually the most balanced its been in ages, you could argue most balanced ever, youre complaining about it being boring? Its time to stop man, youll never be happy with the game.

Just because the game is balanced doesn’t mean it’s fun. If everyone can kill anyone with little to no effort it’s no fun. If passive traits and procs do half the work it isn’t fun. If you barely need to time your skills but just keep spamming your rotation until someone dies it isn’t fun.

Hot heavily lowered the skill floor. That’s a fact.
Elite specs almost exclusively buffed or added things the profession was lacking without needing to make any other compromises. That’s why everything became easier to play.

In terms of skill ceiling… Well you may argue that you can play a more complex game, but mostly you are good doing the same few things over and over again. Also because professions became a ot more forgiving you simply have no need for a perfect play to work. Also elite specs being pretty much mandatory have equal chances limits vuild variety by quite a bit.
As a rule of thumb you could say that before hot almost every class had 2 trait lines that were almost mandatory to use and the 3rd could be exchanged to your likings and playstyle… Now that 3rd simply has the be the elite spec.
I know this doesn’t apply to every single class but in general this is the case and the reason why there is hardly room for creativity.

However look at real PvP games like DoTA, LoL, Smite, CS:GO, and such. EU players normally stand no chance against their NA and Asian overlords. Hence why NA and Asians players hate EU and Russian players so much in these games when they are on their teams.

I’m sorry but in what universe does the NA cs scene stand any chance against EU?
Also…comparing Asian Dota, SC or whatever to us mortals is like letting my grampa do a 100m run against Usain Bolt

What needs to be done imo.
-remove chill and immobilize. There is enough cc and gw2 has a dynamic combat so movement is an essential part.
-remove passive ticks on confusion again and increase on-cast-damage.
-lower or remove damage on torment when not moving

And most importantly: add a godkitten cc timer.

So basically make classes unkitable and destroy reapers and mesmers..

No I say that cripple is enough of a cc. Replacing chill with cripple wouldn’t destroy anything.
Okay… A bit of immo may be acceptable. But only as a well timed cc. 2 sec would be the absolute maximum that is acceptable. Not something like 5000hrs binding roots.

Lol, i can see when all the chill reaper traits will proc with cripple, the age of MM condi build with Bone Fiend, Flash Golem, Greatsword, Scepter and.. Warhorn

Of course the traits would have to be adapted… Man do I always have to write a wall of text with every little detail? =(

Besides that, nobody ever said that a 3rd map would be guaranteed, however everyone knew how motivated they’d be to make another map had DBL been kicked out the door. (Hint: not at all)
At the time everyone knew that if there was any hope left for wvw, it would die should this part of development cease to exist.

Back then I voted for DBL besides all the obvious flaws because I genuinely wanted to believe that someone at anet still cared enaugh to eventually fix this map… But unfortunately my wvw motivation died a short time after that because of gimmicks and completely flawed balance.

In the end saying that this dev comment didn’t skew the vote is very likely to be wrong. I doubt anyone thought that we’d get a new border any time soon after how long DBL took, however we’d hoped that some day in the future it would happen. Something that would be a lot more unlikely had “no” won.

Bloodstone fen was an obvious failure in my eyes.

Bitterfrost was a 9/10 for me. Aesthetically pleasing with little really annoying things.
Lake doric is a 7/10. Looks nice but enemies seem a lot more annoying. The centaur area seems utterly useless. Plus the dams and where the water is technically makes no sense. But it has a lot of nice corners as well.
Ember Bay would be an 8/10. Fits the hostile theme of fire ring very well. Mursaat were annoying as hell tho. Much better after bloodstone fen. Plus points for the funny ley line roller-coaster and one of the best jumping puzzles of all time.

Overall I’d say they are doing a good job with the maps. Not perfect but good enough.

This may be my inner fanboy speaking (Or the 5k hours cough cough) but the game is definitely worth 60$.

Playing through all 4 campaigns will probably take you at least 100hrs. (150-200 if doing some side quests) And that is with one character only, no hardmode, no titles, no friends to play elite content and dungeons, no farming for some nice looking gear and no PvP (okay this one is basically non existant these days)

That being said though I really wouldn’t mind them putting it on discount to get some new players into it who maybe haven’t seen it yet. And it’s not like goldsellers or bots could get any worse…

This idea is even worse than making gw2 am esport in the first place soooo…. Really bad.

Well leaving it like it is means you’ll only be playing with yourself soon enough.

So what’s worse, lots of ‘OP’ builds and lots of people having fun or the same ol crap that’s bleeding players that will soon enough fully kill PvP and leave you with the same 15 people to PvP with?

It won’t work either way looking forward imo.
If you bring back every amulet all that will happen is a rise of bunker specs like we’ve had in the past. That’s for sure. And I’d rather have a bit overtuned damage but at least be able to kill my enemy than to tickle each other for 15 mintues.

1) Your own, actual (not MMR-rated) skill level compared to the ‘average’ of players at your MMR level. A player who should be much higher than they are will be able to carry otherwise bad matchups, and so minimise the role of luck. A player who should be much lower may be so much of a handicap that they can’t be carried, and so luck might not help them. For a player who’s roughly where they should be, though, they can’t really be expected to carry on a regular basis, nor will their presence undermine an otherwise good matchup… so a lot of matches will come down to how lucky they are with their teammates and opposition. Over an infinite number of games this will even out, but it does have the potential for someone to shoot up or down based on a streak of good or bad matchups, respectively.

That is one very important point in my opinion. We know that the playerbase is quite small so a series of good or bad games happens.
But having a bad streak doesn’t mean you are stuck where you ended up nor that it’s your actual rating. You have to accept that the system can’t be perfect and get a rough idea of where you are standing. That doesn’t mean that you went down to silver as a legendary skilled player, but it means that you can drop to mid gold as a platinum player if you have a bad streak.
Then you yourself have to know that this isn’t where you belong and that you can fight your way back up without crying in the forums.
But I’m sure you’ll also eventually have a lucky streak upwards when you will just have to face and accept your limits, which many people will obviously just ignore. They’ll be like “oh I’ve made it to the peak of my rating once so that is obviously where I belong permanently”.
You have to objectively reflect on yourself. Stop blaming the system for everything. Yes, it has flaws. Yes, it can give you outrageous matches, but everything will even out on average. Big fluctuations happen because the sample size is too small.
I mean it took one of the worlds best players 140 games to go from bronze to legendary with an 85% winrate. Now imagine how long it takes players to climb with maybe 60%. That happens. But you climbing slowly doesn’t mean not climbing at all. Maybe you just don’t have enaugh games for statistics to apply.
But I’m sure things will even out in the next season. You’ll get a new start after the soft reset and you can show where you really belong.

If we made climbing easier then fluctuation would be even harder. You can’t have everything.
Systems like this need a lot of time to get in balance, so give it time.

I would like to hear this guy’s reasoning behind why a lot of users are consistently experiencing huge blowouts, losses or wins by 200+ points, in their games. If every game can be carried, why do these games happen so often? If players are where they belong, why do they consistently dominate some teams in their division and get destroyed by others?

Is it possible the people with these experiences are actually the minority? If you think about it the people having issues would be much more likely to post about it than the people who arent having problems.

Oh it’s you again. Yes of course it’s possible I’m in the minority, but why does this minority exist if the system is working properly?

This isn’t the same. A system working properly means that statistically it works as intended with a very high probability.
What you are asking is a perfect system, which just isn’t possible.

Good question, although I would rather not get bogged down into the details.

It is complicated. It basically compares them against an average/healthy skill or trait to come up with the rating. A rating of 600 is considered balanced. As you can see all these traits and skills are way above this 600 mark.

PI in particular was a shocking result, it came in insanely high.

Again, thanks to all those who helped me collect the data over the last 4 weeks.

I don’t have a problem with promoting Esports if it’s justified.

The thing with Esports is: if you want to go for it it’s all or nothing. All your balance should rely on the best players meta, not on the average player and all rules that are in place for Pro players should be in place for casual player so that they can identify with them and understand what they play like.

The problem with GW2 is that they don’t care about esports. They don’t care about balancing their game according to pro players’ feedback. They just want some numbers on twitch and throw that “World Championship whatever kitten” on your screen right in your face every few months.
That isn’t esports. That’s just wasted. And that is the reason people say they should give up on esports. Because they don’t take it serious. Their management of the gamemode is more of an insult to any serious player.

If they were serious about Esports they’d have much more regular balance patches, a fully seperate PvP balance and the same rules for everyone.
If you want to push your competitive scene you have to motivate your players to reach for that competitive level. But there is no motivation in GW2. The competitive scene is almost dead, balancing has been utterly slow for years, obviously broken things ignored for ages and the matchmaking does not at all give you a motivation to jump from good player to pro player. Hell, it took them over 4 years to start giving you a slight representation of your actual skill.

This game is catering to Casual weekend players in every single aspect and esports simply doesn’t fit in there. Because there is no true competitive spirit in this game. It may be fine for “casual competitive” players but it just doesn’t make players devoting their life to it.

Perhaps I misunderstood the point of the playthrough. My understanding was that if you get stuck in bronze and work to improve, that anyone should be able to climb out. It cannot be called ELO Hell imo if you gain 30 mmr per win.

Being able to climb out upon actually improving is a different thing from what people usually talk about. It is indeed rather hard once your MMR has setteled, but I’d argue that with 2 months per season it is acceptable and you can climb higher after the next MMR reset.

What people usually claimed was that they ended up in Bronze and could never ever get out, because they always had the 4 worst players of the game in their team while facing top ESL players…all of that while always playing godlike themselves of course.

Frustration is simply something you have to expect when playing a competitive game. It’s unavoidable to lose and rage.
I’ve started this season solo in tier 2 plat when an old friend came back to the game after a very long time so we qued up together. He was still a bit rusty and ended up in low silver.
Never in my life did I rage as much as when playing against and especially with this skill level.
But we’ve fought our way through it. Because we knew they were no threat to us and because we had the confidence to go in there and kick their kitten.
During that time I dropped to about mid gold since you always lost about 20 points while gaining 3-4 on that level.
But we didn’t give up. Because we knew we were better, because we didn’t care about a virtual number and most importantly: because we wanted to have fun together.
So we played for a while, had good games, had bad games. Eventually I’ve been on the brink of plat again… And we went on a losing streak straight to tier 1 gold. That was really frustrating, but once again we didn’t give up.
We kept fighting, went up, went down and now we’ve finally reached plat together.
And I didn’t come to the forums to QQ about how this or that is broken because no matter how hard we got stomped, no matter how bad or comp and how stupid our teammates were… I never played a perfect game. Because that’s impossible. You always find mistakes you make and that you can work on. I took many losses personal, even if my teammates may have been a million times worse. Some better skill timing here, a second earlier to rotate and the game might have ended up differently. You should always search for your mistakes. Because you can’t change the system, nor your teammates. But you can change.

At this point I don’t even expect us to stay there for very long. I expect a losing streak at any time just by how it’s been in the past.
I know that I belong here somewhere. But I don’t know where. Because people change, team comps change and I change as well. Sometimes you have a good day, sometimes a bad day. Sometimes good teammates and sometimes bad.
But it doesn’t matter. Just don’t care about that number you see. The way the game is structured it is basically impossible to get a very accurate rating for a single person.
Instead keep doing your best, make sure that you actually still enjoy the game and always look at what you can do better first.

A blacklist of maybe 20-30 would easily be enough to eliminate the worst trolls and still have enough variety.

So you do not want to lose your rank, that’s fine. Nobody does.
But it doesn’t sound like pvp is truly your “main thing”. The past seasons had a horrible system which allowed anyone to reach legendary.
Basically what you are saying is that you don’t want to play because there is no visual progression for you. And that, without judging you, is a general problem in mmo’s. People always want a big cookie for everything they get. But that’s not the spirit of true pvp. You play pvp because you like the pvp itself, not because you want to grind your way through a ladder.
If you know that you won’t reach legendary that’s fine, but what stops you from trying? In pvp it’s all about skill. You play because you want to win. To win you have to be the best and that is the only thing you are striving for. To become better and beat everyone you face. It may not be today, neither tomorrow, but you will eventually rise to the top. And as long as you are having fun in some well balanced games (no matter the actual situation) it doesn’t matter if you move up or down.
All you want is victory and having a good time in the game. Why would a care about a virtual number if you don’t play the game anymore? I just never understand this.

A different question: in what way do you believe a leaderboard for solo to be representative if you still have to rely on 4 other teammates in your matches?
Overall the leaderboards are just artificial, there is no #1 player due to all the different roles and professions you can take in this game. There will never be fairness in Solo nor duo.
The only way to get a representative leaderboard is to have a 5v5 que. But until that point it’s really nice to be able to find players, form a duo with them and start to teach yourself the basics of teamplay until you go for 5v5.

From my approximation I get a total of 15-16 viable builds right now. That really isn’t what I would call no variety. We’ve had much worse in the past.
There is less variety within the professions themselves because with hot requirement you can only change 2 traitlines, but instead there is variety between the professions and there is not a single one you wouldn’t be helpful with, granted you know how to play it.

That doesn’t mean that we couldn’t pretty easily get even more variety. I just don’t like people saying there is nothing to choose from.

Warriors, Scrappers and mesmers basically always use the +25% trait, druid has easy 100% swiftness uptime with shouts, and we don’t talk about thieves.
So all that is left are Tempest, Herald, DH and Necros.
Tempest gets 8sec upon overloading an attunement which gives him quite some swiftness should he need it and Herald can use Facet of Elements for perma swiftness if he wishes so.

So really the only two classes left are Necro and DH of which necro at least has Loctus swarm but it isn’t very powerful in terms of mobility.
Also one of the things many people kept complaining with necro is that he is simply too slow out of all the classes, which I second.
So basically all it would be is a well needed buff for necros, a perhaps unnecessary buff for DH and not much of a change for any other profession besides Rev and to a very small degree ele, but instead we wouldn’t need to waste a rune just for mobility sake and since Zephyr’s Speed on ele really is the only trait that doesn’t have a second effect to it we could just delete the +25% and leave them as they are without any problem.

I’m high gold with almost 200 games played and I barely ever have 3 dh’s on one team. This happens as often as 3 thiefs, 3 necs or 3 warriors…it just happens. And most of the time you are going to swap if you know what’s good for you.
I do see 2 DH regularily (number is obviously inflated since I’m already one myself) but not so often that I consider them a problem. I can have just as many games where I’m the only DH as games with 2 on a team. Not to mention I’m usually very happy about 2+ DH on the enemy team since the traps are so insanely easy to play around.

Also you have to consider something: what are your main dps classes in PvP? Warrior, Necro and Guardian. Both warrior and Guardian do well in teamfights as individually and are rather forgiving so it’s perfectly fine to have 2 of them in one team. Professions like thief or mesmer that are very individual in their playstyle simply don’t fit in teamplay more than once. Just like you probably won’t need more than one ele for support since you’ll lose damage otherwise or you are going to be too squishy like with 2 necs that you may not be able to properly support.

I’m hesitant to say that DH is stronger than average. They are easier to play than other professions but they are also simply one of the most versatile classes which is obviously something very important in a dynamic game and that will keep DH popular even if he is going to be nerfed the little bit he really deserves.
The problem with DH in my eyes lies in the huge differences in skill. Even on a decent competitive level (plat and above from my experience) people know about their weaknesses and exploit them heavily which makes them not a very favoured class. On the other hand the easy to play mechanics and people simply not knowing how to play around traps etc. make them disproportionately rewarding in lower tier play. And nerfing DH by anthing more than a bit here and there their role in higher skill play would be gone. And right now I personally don’t see a solution to satisfy both camps. If you do then please enlighten me. I mean technically if all you are going to do is nerf Dragons Maw and Procession of Blades that would perhaps be fine, since barely anyone can afford to sacrifice survivability for these on higher levels and they seem to be what people complain most on lower levels.

I think that engineer is actually a pretty good example for our problem. It’s another class that fits this overall role very well, and imo a well played scrapper declasses any dh these days and has additional support capabilities, like function gyro etc. But we all know that engineer is a very difficult to master class so people won’t play it that frequently in contrast to DH which, while being weaker, is just the more easy approach.
But it just doesn’t seem fair to nerf something to the ground because it’s a bit easier to play than something else that can be a lot more devistating but simply isn’t recognised because people don’t want to/can’t learn it.

Sigh yes it is to much. I would like to have a 2s stun instead of all the condies and the daze and a leap. A 300 leap with good damage and a stun is fitting the weapon and good enough.

Yes that is what warriors need: another long hard cc.

The only ascended item I’d really recommend you is a weapon since 5% more damage really isn’t neglectable. Jewelry is also pretty good to have and fairly easy to get, at least rings and amulet.
Armor only gives you an insignificant boost and really isn’t worth the money you pay for crafting materials imo.

Also as said above: item rarity doesn’t matter in PvP.

I can’t tell how much I hate that map at this point. It’s being voted so often.
But what actually bothers me most is that you are forced to play a non-ranked map when your initial plan is to actually practise a profession for ranked. I mean it’s not like I’m going unranked to feel great about pugstomping or something like that.
