that kind of change IS a mechanic change.
why do you keep trying to change thief mechanics?
it’s funny every thief build looks cheesy xD
even the WvW build I play, must look cheesy as hell with all the DD spam I do.
Ive been wanting to create a thief but I heard that they are a pain to level in PVE. Is this true? Obviously there going to be a little squishy but some people make it seem impossible. Also what build and weapons would you suggest for leveling a thief in PVE, which traits to get first and what is a good build for sPvP?
Thanks!
That’s what I thought, but after i killed Liadri solo I think the thief isn’t that bad at PvE at all. I use S/P and shortbow/P/P with signet of malice and blood sigils (for PvE) and fairly balanced stats and think she’s a blast to play.
With the build I used to down liadri (S/P + P/P) I was also able to kill all the other bosses in 1-2 tries max, most of them I could 1 shot (swap fleet of foot for quick recovery).
For sPvP I don’t really recommend thief atm. Better off with condi bunker warrior.
For PvE, I’d go with some mix of PVT, Valkyrie, and Berserker stats. Try to extract more of your offensive stats from the accessories it’s more efficient.
Weapons, I’d say S/P + (P/P or shortbow depending on single or multi). You can use my liadri build. Has my equip, skills, traits, and demo playstyle.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/thief/Liadra-guide-for-non-zerk-direct-damage/first
Some good skills for PvE to swap in for group play (depending on situation, don’t need to swap if don’t need) are shadow refuge, smoke screen, shadow step, and dagger storm.
The foods I use currently are Koi cake (for WvW but I don’t use this PvE build) and slices of candied dragon roll (for PvE)

Lol crap my thief looks like a noob since I always played WvW which isn’t profitable at all but sure. Only thing that identifies my skill is my liadri mini! The gladiator title is decent too, but I’ve only recently been messing with sPvP.
you’re not using enough of the things that makes warrior OP in the current meta.
i’m just going to speak from the point of view of a thief. If a warrior is not using healing signet it’s pretty much a free kill also you’re too glassy I can see why you get killed easily. get some more armor, and sustain and use either condi bunker with LB + w/e or mace+shield/greatsword and cavalier armor.
Ask me anything.
well AA has more effective range than #4. if you’re in range to use poison field you’re in range to use cluster bomb….
for tagging I find AA to be safer….i use #4 when someone gets downed sometimes (and there is a chance that he would get res’d).
my power build also uses the 40% condition food.
won’t happen, too much coding and balancing required.
I really don’t think bringing gvg to spvp is a good idea. I think just about everyone who does gvg prefers pve gearing and food. If anet wised up and brought those things over then maybe, but atm I doubt many would want to make the transition. I think it’d be far better if anet instead worked on a way to integrate organized gvg into wvw.
However, I facepalm every time I see dumb comments about pve gear and food buffs being horribly unbalanced. Remember the whole, worst meta ever, terrible balance, elementalists being nonexistent, and most classes being pigeon holed into one or two builds thing? What balance do you think you’re protecting in spvp? Pve gear and food buffs allow far more customization and build diversity than pvp gear, and is a pretty significant reason for many people choosing not to play spvp.
sPvP balance is trash but still 100x better than GvG balance
The only reason this CC meta even exists is due to overbuff of healing signet. It needs to be nerfed significantly, it’s too OP now.
GvG is incredibly unbalanced, half the classes are useless. But I guess ANET can try to fix the 4 classes that are useless right now…
Seems like dagger storm can neuter P/D thief attacks for 8 seconds.
You tag with the auto attack.
it’s not really a new warrior build. when they first came out like 2 months ago, I started QQ about it cuz it was hard for me to kill at the time. Turns out it was their new OP build. and fast forward 2 months it’s still OP.
i just started eating +condi duration like a week after first running into them to counter that type of warrior specifically, and I haven’t failed to kill any warriors since then with my control build. But mostly the warriors I faced are pretty bad so yea…hard to know for sure.
But mace+shield/greatsword is like 1-2 months old really. perplexity builds are the new rage.
At this point, I think perplexity is the new OP.

endure pain, berserker stance, healing signet.
Your zerg of 10-26 needs a thief like me to deal with them. My thief is specifically built to catch a warrior.

Won’t this build suffer when para sigil is nerfed?
The idea is to nerf warriors.
I also suggest energy sigil nerf to nerf thieves.
A lot of people are bad and can’t deal with stealth thieves even though they’re in a poor position right now. They just simply need to L2P.
A lot of people are indeed bad..they couldn’t even deal with a well visible ele in punching bag mode so they asked for nerfs..now they can’t deal with scepter burst and so they ask for more nerfs…but touch their profession and suddenly everything is balanced..am I right @excalibur?
Ele was OP at one point, but not anymore. They nerfed it too hard.
Wow people finally realized this after a year +. I realized this practically the first week (scratch that, within the first hour of playing my thief) I started playing this game.
A lot of people are bad and can’t deal with stealth thieves even though they’re in a poor position right now. They just simply need to L2P.
thief is a joke in sPvP. warrior and necro >>>>>>>>>> thief any day
Just thought I’d drop my two cents, if you’re a thief, just stay out of the water, period, in terms of PvP, unless you -really- need to go into it, just avoid it
Depends on your build. I run signet of malice + 3 signets with blood sigil on harpoon gun. It’s pretty solid if you’re also tanky. (spam the underwater unload)
Underwater flanking strike with the spear is also pretty solid. (managed to overcome the regen of my regen bunker warrior in sPvP)
(edited by Excalibur.9748)
Well shortbow is my main weapon in WvW because it’s perfect for zergs and I’m in a zerg most of the time for maximum $$/exp.
I don’t think people understand how pivotal this skill is to the S/D kit. This skill ALONE allows you to spec pure offense with almost no sustain (personally I roll with completely no sustain, and I don’t even evade spam (S/D makes it possible to not evade, not stealth ONLY because of infiltrator strike), it’s all about the positioning and CC) because you can use it to avoid a key attack and then continue with the offense immediately after. You don’t have to worry about getting CC’d and then 1HKO by a chain because #2 exists. You don’t have to worry about getting stuck in the midst of a bunch of necro marks or other AoE because it exists. You can actually preemptively evade key skills with either #3 or evade, but if key skills hit it’s no big deal because you always have an escape plan.
You can’t just replace this skill with an offensive skill, the whole kit wouldn’t even work. It’s just that important.
So basically it’s always 2 2 2 , no matter which weaponset a thief is using.
Personally I spam #4 but #2 is always there when I need it (need to set it up first though).
Every skill in S/D kit is useful imo:
- - beast auto attack
- - considered by many to be the most OP skill in the game. “on-demand” escape even when CC’d, cure condition, immobilize, shadow step.
- - “on demand” evade, unblockable boon steal
- - cripple, soft CC, 1/4s cast time only (can hardly be interrupted by perplexity builds), uptime can be 100% with proper build to take advantage of this
- - “on demand” stealth, is better when traited, but not necessary. still has niche use even if no points in SA.
It does seem to take a lot of skill. It’s something PUGs can’t seem to get right vs an organized group.
The thing is noone wants to die first, so PUGs don’t like to stack on commanders oftentimes especially when they know they’ll be the first to die.

if you make #2 into a damage skill the whole set is completely dead.Take away IS and the set is dead, period.
Whole 2 sets i’d say, S/P use inf. strike much more frequently!
You’re right, I think S/P would be hurting even more with #2 removal. Either way, both sets would be totally ruined. They would be in worse position than P/P currently.
if you make #2 into a damage skill the whole set is completely dead.Take away IS and the set is dead, period.
Yeah probably too good in pvp.
S/D thieves will thank you for those extra dodges :P
D/P has CC, daze (from headshot) is considered to be hard CC whereas immobilize and cripple are soft CC.
Blind is another form of CC, but soft CC.
Either you’re making things up or you’re playing semantics. Daze is a disable, not CC. Daze is under “control effect” not “condition”. Cripple, Imobile, chill, fear are all CC — Daze is not.
Crowd control is essentially the same group of effects, notably used in-game in effect descriptions of Unshakable and Defiant tooltips. Some enemies possess the Unstoppable ability which makes them totally immune to control effects as well as movement-restricting conditions like crippled or immobilized.
[edit]
Just gonna leave this here. Crowd control (CC) INCLUDES control effects.
I’m not gonna blame you though, I made the same blunder on the warrior forums one time and the other guy looked at me like I’m a total noob. I thought this was an easy mistake to make.

People still complain about burst thief? They’re not even in this meta.
Yes they are. I´ve seen them around in PvP
They’re in last place on the tier lists. Typically in C-tier whereas warrior is in S tier. That means they’re not a part of the meta.
Ofcourse most people don’t even list D/D thief on there, cuz they’re basically worthless. Probably worse than last place.
If you can find even 1 qualifying team in a tournament (ESL or PAX) that uses a D/D thief, that would be a miracle in itself.
Dude.. shut up.. ur so lost.. who still uses D/D… in a non condi build. its all about that perma blind. 2 shot D/P build. whats wrong with u… >.>
That’s because all those people trying to show how much burst the thief does is using a D/D thief for example. D/P thief DOES NOT have cloak and dagger. All these stupid screenies and videos for “proof” has it showing cloak and dagger.
Like you said, who still uses D/D thief? It’s terrible!!
Please stop QQing about CND + Backstab burst and that goes for everyone in the warrior forums.

If banner of Defense gave 33% faster endurance regeneration it would actually be highly beneficial in pve.
and in PvP
I use S/D + Shortbow for WvW, but it’s not really an evade build. I play a control build.
I know there has been complaints about this recently in GW2 with ascended weapons out now, but believe me as a MMO pvper for the last 14 years in numerous MMO’s (Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot, and World of Warcraft mainly). This game has done a great job of not letting gear progression dominate their PvP.
Really it’s been over a year…and weapon stats went up a couple points per stat. Hell if this was WoW you would have had a 150+ increase on weapon stats. So for those complaining about the measly boost ascended gives please stop and realize how good you really have it. IT IS a lot worse everywhere else.
Still doesn’t make it acceptable.
Why doesn’t this and other stat combinations exist in ascended form?

Recently I’ve noticed a disturbing trend.
People are not gonna be satisfied with just larcenous strike nerf. They want infiltrator strike nerf (good call, I would say that this skill is the bread and butter of S/D kit). And general evade nerf (an S/D thief can be built to evade many times in a row).
It’s getting to me because I don’t think they realize that it’s actually hard to play in sPvP and a regen bunker warrior is a lot easier to play in sPvP.
There is this misconception that you can’t hit the “perma-evade” thief…yet I can consistently hit them with GS auto attack (!) on my warrior. The rate that the thief loses health to my auto attack is practically the same as me losing HP. But considering that he is using all his evades/skills/initiatives and I’m just using auto attack chain and dealing the SAME damage…how does that make the S/D thief OP in any way?
Another funny story…one time I was 1v1ing this S/D thief who was just dancing cirlces around me, and then he withdrew to his doom , when he fell down one of those cracks on sky hammer. That was funny as hell! Withdraw is an okay heal, but can’t really touch healing signet in any way. It’s good if you want to get out since it propels you backwards, but what if you don’t want to? Well tough luck, it comes with withdraw.
The ONLY nerf to S/D kit I can advise is nerf to energy sigil, in the same way that paralization sigil is being nerfed to nerf warrior. A hit to energy sigil will hit S/D thief hardest. This will cut down on the evade spam “issue” which is really not that much of an issue since they can still be hit while they’re chaining evades.
(edited by Excalibur.9748)
Healing Signet
-Passive heal
-Most HPS heal in the game
-infinite duration
-No cast time
-Can not be stripped
Cut the HPS by half.
Yes nerf evades because warrior is not easy enough to play.
what kind of stats do you get with celestial/divinity?
Time to live for a regen bunker warrior is very high, possibly the highest (even if afk can live almost forever). They also have highest amounts of CC too (so called access to “perma-CC”, which in reality is not really perma. But then there is no “perma-evade” either.). And also highest access to stability (guardian is close).
(edited by Excalibur.9748)
The QQ will not stop with paralization sigil nerf.
The warriors will move to condi bunker spec, and then the QQ will shift to healing signet nerf.
Healing signet will then get nerfed, and THEN the QQ “may” die down.
(edited by Excalibur.9748)
The OP speaks the truth, backstab still needs some rework, I was running a toughness/condition damage (2k toughness, 18K hp). I was doing fine, without noticing a huge drop with my health until a D/D Thief came out of nowhere. I thought I could resist a little but just a few stealth (like 1 or 2) and I was low hp or already on the floor.
It was the only ennemy I was afraid of in the entire map. Needless to say it’s a pain to find a moment to make some damage with all the blinds/stealth/dodges/skill evades (Heartseeker/Death Blossom etc.).
And that’s coming from someone who owns a lvl 80 Thief.
D/D thieves aren’t even viable these days.
for sPvP because why would you want a bunker for WvW?
I usually play my regen bunker war in sPvP and it’s very nice and easy, and you can actually feel the difference you’re making for your team.
the problem is it’s very easy to play and doesn’t really challenge me enough. Are there any bunker builds for thief that is as good as a regen bunker war/bunker guardian?
