Good Light Source for Elementalists?

in Players Helping Players

GLYPH OF STORMS has a semi-decent sized target circle, so I could use that in conjunction with the Flames of Kryta.

But my problem remains… something that sheds actual, continuous LIGHT is still far better for me than the targeting circles, as well as requiring less dexterity out of a poor jumper such as myself. I can live with the dimmer, yellowish light from a fire (although the brighter blue-white of Cobalt is nicer). But the Flames of Kryta doesn’t have a very big light radius, so won’t always illuminate as far as I am able to jump.

The search goes on…

Good Light Source for Elementalists?

Hamfast.8719

Yeah, I’ve tried using my targeting circles and it helps a little. But I’m not the world’s best jumper, and light makes all the difference. (My Mesmer gets through easily with the bright blue-white light of Cobalt).

I am primarily a staff Elementalist, and have tried all of the skills to try to get a little light on the subject. But it’s slow and tricky that way.

Still looking for something that puts out good light on a continual basis. I will see if I can get the EFFIGY FRAGMENT sold by Grathzion the Dauntless in Fireheart Rise, and test it out. But pictures of it in action don’t look any brighter than the Flames of Kryta.

Good Light Source for Elementalists?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

My main character is an elementalist. The “sorcerer” or “wizard” of Guild Wars 2. Yet I am unable to find a satisfactory LIGHT SOURCE for her. Oh, I don’t need it very often; mostly for the occasional foray into the Sharkmaw Caverns jumping puzzle. But for the foremost spellcasters in the game, this oversight is shocking.

I have assigned my one-and-only “Flames of Kryta” torch to her for this purpose, but it is woefully dim.

I have hunted through the Staves, Scepters, Foci, and Daggers, but have not come up with anything that sheds a nice light (or skill granted from the item in question).

Any thoughts, anyone? (And please, by the six gods, let the answer not be a “Legendary” weapon!)

Suggestion: Particle Effects

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hamfast.8719

I still want to see my OWN particle effects clearly. But I only need a bare hint of the effects of others. I wish we had a slider for how dimmed we would like them to be. I place a lot of AoE’s, and it is EXTREMELY hard and sometimes impossible to see exactly where my targeting ring is. Water is a big problem too… I can’t often see my circles OR enemy circles when I’m standing in water. (I’m looking at you, Shadow Beast!)

Warning Buoy!

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Cerise… Scarlet, set that monstrosity down barely half the width of a Crab Toss ring away from the rocks that started everything. I myself never knew the extent of the warning needed at this site.

Jonas and I led countless survivors to safety outside of town. [FISH] were schooled well, and very few refugees were lost. Now as I join with LA’s Heroes to retake the city, I can feel it is only a matter of time before Scarlet and her minions will be gone.

Yet bravery still lies in the future of this indestructible city. What form will the new social hub of Tyria take? More than ever, it will unite of all the races in cooperation. That, more than anything else, will assure that not Zhaitan, not Scarlet, nor anyone will ever bring about it’s end.

And I will be here, as always, watching over the harbor.

Tequatl And Servers That Can Manage

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hamfast.8719

So about four servers are able to do Tequatl on a regular basis? And ANet still hasn’t addressed this? Am I the only one who thinks this is warped? One of our few fun world bosses is all but forgotten to the majority of the community.

Only recently I said “I miss Tequatl… I’m gonna go guest to another server and fight her again!” But I never got the opportunity. After about 50 minutes of waiting around doing nothing in Sparkfly Fen, I was disconnected and (of course) never got back in.

What little spark of interest I had is gone again for who knows how much longer. They made the encounter more fun, and in the process made it more frustrating. It just isn’t worth the hassle of guesting and waiting around anymore, and I mourn the loss of what I first thought was some of the most promising content yet.

  • Sittable chairs; easy to implement, often overlooked.

Easy only in games where you don’t have races with different sizes and height sliders. Else it seems not really that easy to implement after all i read.

Rather than make every chair “sittable”, each character needs to haul around his own chair in a secret, 4th dimensional pocket (just like when a Saturday morning cartoon character suddenly whips a huge mallet out of nowhere). Then he can type /chair wherever he is to whip it out and sit down properly. The /eat and /drink emotes would work both standing and sitting.

Do you not have a legendary weapon yet?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Darned few Legendaries look good to me. I rather like The Flameseeker Prophecies, but don’t have a shield-using character. I considered Bifrost for a time, until they turned up the special effects. Forget it now. I think footsteps are goofy, and the more pronounced ones are obnoxious. Weapon “swooshes” in the air are the likewise ugly in my opinion. And don’t get me started on those weapons that create a “cloud” aura around your character. Why do I want to hide the armor I have spent so long working on, in favor of looking like the Pig-Pen character from Peanuts?

No, sir. I have played more hours than you. From your post, one would assume you just acquired your own Legendary weapon. In which case, my weapon is older, has more kills to it’s name, and is therefore far more deserving of the term “Legendary” than something you cooked up in the Forge yesterday.

Why is Peneloopee Cold?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

In the refugee camp outside Vigil Keep, the Quaggan Peneloopee and her friend Bloomanoo stand by a campfire and complain in pitiful voices of being cold.

These are Quaggans?

The same Quaggans that according to their WIKI description are amphibians, who can spend about a day on land before their skin becomes dried out and uncomfortable? And they’re standing by a fire?

The same Quaggans who are “comfortable naked” according to the WIKI and have their own little cultural Olympics underneath the icy arctic seas? And they’re cold in Gendarran Fields?

I submit to you that Peneloopee and Bloomanoo are either mesmer-disguised spies for Scarlet, or they have been severely mis-played by the story writing team in an effort to make people feel sorry for the poor cutesy-wootsey Quaggan people. (“Quaggan is trying hard not to cry!”)

It’s not working for me, writers. I’m not buying it. You’re pushing too heavily on the cute angle in order to sell more backpacks. Thank goodness the camp is temporary and this scene will eventually disappear.

I believe you can select your dyes as “favourites” and sort by that.

No…

Each character can right-click any dye to add/remove it from his personal favorites list at the top of the window. You only get 8 “favorites”, and they are not sorted with the others.

Check out the picture below. You can clearly see how much easier it is to find the right color dye when sorted by HUE. Using SET or MATERIAL is like a game of “Where’s Waldo?”

So please… let us decide how we want to sort! I don’t like needle-in-a-haystack games.

Best Gold Metallic dye?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

It depends on the armor. (Not to mention the lighting, and your own personal preference as to what looks good). Different pieces will dye differently, so all of the ones listed here are good in different situations.

Try sorting your armor by MATERIAL, and look through the METALLIC ones. These generally show more contrast, making those sharp metal edges and relief designs really pop!

Bifrost is one of the few Legendaries I occasionally admire… but only when the wielder is standing there doing nothing. As soon as he draws it and a cloud appears around his body, it’s ruined for me. I want people to be able to see the nice armor I worked so hard to get. And when the player moves and those stoopid footprints appear, then I remember why I never even started to work on Bifrost.

Legendaries can change their stats at will. They also need to be able to toggle on/off the various special effects that the user wishes to display: Clouds, Weapon Trails, Footprints, etc. Either that, or give us more Legendaries to choose from with different effects. I’m so tired of every single one having the same special effects. Have the creative designers no creativity?

Theundersigned: First I’ve seen that one. But I’ve seen others, and they look extremely dumb floating in the air like that. Dee-You-Em-Bee dumb. They appear to be correctly emerging from the head on an Asura character.

Bevillian: See Theundersigned’s link. There ARE no horns in my picture. But I would love to have some if they attached to my head instead of floating a foot too high. (Who designed those… the same guy who makes all the hovering shoulderpads?) Until now, I had to settle for just the blanked-out eyes you see in my picture, since they are head armor. But since the horns are a POTION, I can now have BOTH for Halloween. But unless they fix ‘em so that they aren’t floating, then I guess I’ll have to be a Demoness with a Halo.

Captain's Airship Ticket Bug?

in Bugs: Game, Forum, Website

Posted by: Hamfast.8719

Hamfast.8719

Yeah, it bugs me too. I go to the airship to access the Daily Activity guy, and when I leave the Daily Activity I have to endure TWO loading screens… first as it returns me to the airship, and second as it then immediately kicks me off the airship into Gendarran Fields below.

Also, it does NOT provide the very first thing on the list, the thing I wanted most of all: Quick Travel to all Cities. It only provides a free teleport (the “I paid 1000 gems” sort of “free” teleport) to the general vicinity of the Asuran Gates. Not a time saver, since you have a loading screen getting onto the ship, then a second loading screen to get off the ship, and then about a minute to run to the Gates.

All in all, I’m kinda disappointed in it as it stands right now. I’d sell it back if I could.

The airship is convenient, but cramped. Even if I’m up there by myself. (It’s not an instanced area). I can picture myself having to carefully mouse click the NPC I want to interact with, since they are so close to each other in spots.

The part that interested me most was the first thing mentioned on the TP description: “Quick Travel to All Cities”. Not exactly true. I didn’t see a way to go to another city from the Airship. When you leave the airship, you go to the refugee camp outside Vigil Keep, and can then run to the Asura Gates. (About as far as it was from the old LA bank to the gate plaza.) Still better than using WvW as a cheap way back to civilization from out in the boonies. But when they said “Quick Travel” I was expecting that I would be able to travel to other cities directly from the ship. No such luck.

Inventory Window changing size alone

Same problem here. I keep mine a nice even 10 slots wide, and it keeps resizing to 11. Not always right away though. I can open and close it a bit after resizing back to my normal desires, but always within a few minutes it takes matters into it’s own hands again.

This is really annoying, since I have multiple armor combinations set up in my inventory in just such-and-such a way for quick changes.

MAYBE something to do with scrolling? I have enough bags that I have a scroll bar. Is the game widening my Inventory screen in order to remove the scroll bar? Hmm…

SUGGESTION: Please Remember!

Hamfast.8719

There are a number of little “quality of life” things that the game “forgets”. (For many people, some of these things are more than just “quality of life” issues). Here are six things that the game should always remember for us:

1) Achievement Watch List Preferences – I always want my Achievement “Watch List” to display TOTALS. I personally never have a use for displaying Tiers. Yet every time I log in I have to reset my choice because the game thinks sorting by Tiers is better for me. Call me crazy, but I think I know what’s better for me.

2) My Ranger’s Pet is Stowed for a Reason – I put my Ranger’s pet away when I don’t want him to get me into trouble. He should not come out when I take damage. He should only come out again when I un-stow him or when I attack. I admire his loyalty, but I would admire his obedience even more.

3) I Want to Display my Mini-Pet – Some mini-pets stay out when I take them out. Others disappear when I enter water, then reappear when I emerge. Still others disappear when I enter water and don’t come back! It’s bad enough that minis don’t keep up when I move. How can I show them off when they are 500 feet behind me? But do you know how frustrating it is when they disappear entirely just because you wade through a creek? Please fix it so all minis come back out when emerging from the water and when changing zones!

4) My Last Chat Channel – The game is always forgetting my last chat channel. If I was on “Party chat”, then I should still be on Party chat when I leave the game and come back. It doesn’t matter if I’m still partied up or not. The same goes for “Guild chat”. It doesn’t matter if I change my Guild representation status. Don’t change my chat channel to “Say”. Instead, display Guild [Current Guild Tag] …this would also be a nice, visible way for me to see who I’m currently representing without having to open the Guild menu. So please retain my last chat channel between sessions/characters.

5) My Dye Sorting Preference – I have a ton of dyes, and I use them a lot. Sorting by HUE is the easiest, most logical way to find the color I’m looking for. On rare occasions, I will even sort by MATERIAL if I am looking for something that will provide a lot of contrast for metallic pieces. But every time I log into the game, I have to reset my preference from “SET”. Seriously? Sort by “Set”? What the heck is that? How can calling a dye “common” or “uncommon” or “rare” possibly help me locate the one I want? Please don’t force your preferences upon me every time. These are supposed to be my preferences.

6) My Trading Post Search Parameters & Location – Since for some reason I still can’t refine my searches by armor weight (Light/Medium/Heavy), searches take forever as I wade through inapplicable results. Sometimes I need to leave the search screen (to convert gems to gold, or to pick up purchases, or whatever). When I come back, my search is lost. I need to put in my parameters again and wade through the list from the beginning to get back to where I left off. Unless I close the TP entirely, my search parameters and location should not be reset.

PLEASE REMEMBER these things!

You finally fixed the drop-down state so that the text in the upper right corner stays the way we want it (for the most part). Please fix these other issues so that the game remembers our preferences in them as well.

Are we still going to have an update on this Amazing Sword? I mean, We still don’t have the Trails of Sunrise/Twilight Any plans making this sword better again?

Eternity doesn’t leave trails? Awesome! Now I want one!

Seriously, the various special effects for Legendaries need TOGGLES. If somebody wants to leave weapon swooshes in the air, or puddles on the ground where they walk, or be enveloped in a cloud that hides the Ascended armor they labored so hard to make, more power to them.

To me, most of the particle effects look incredibly stupid, and are a huge factor in my decision to NOT make a Legendary weapon. Some weapons are really nice looking, but most “Legendaries” seem to rely entirely on the particle effects for “awe” factor. To many folks, though, it is a “Thpppt!” factor. (Definition: ThppptThe sound you make when you stick your tongue out between your lips and exhale).

Aura: Toggle on/off
Weapon Trails: Toggle on/off
Footprints: Toggle on/off

Am I missing any F/X categories?

Please let the Legendary owner display only the particle effects that he wants. Legendaries are all about the visuals, and visuals are a matter of personal taste. Let us exhibit our own personal sense of what we consider good-looking. (Besides, someone who wants to show off everything in town might want to be less conspicuous in WvW. They would appreciate being able to shrink the target on their forehead).

Since her home appears to be ground zero, Bubbles has retreated inland for one last relaxing weekend before she returns to take the good fight to Scarlet and her minions.

She does NOT believe the city will be totally devastated, as some do. It would impact too many existing Personal Storylines. (Claw Island? A major PS event. Why would anyone go to Claw Island to protect LA, if LA is now a wasteland?)

There will be some visible damage (hopefully more so than with the Karka invasion, if we are to take it seriously). But this is supposedly a SIEGE, not a sacking. I personally hope that a damaged gathering hub increases interest for people in hanging out at the cultural capital cities a little.

So chin up! Join Bubbles and enjoy one final weekend of memories. After next week you can look forward to reminiscing with new players about the city you remembered from the early days of the game. But Lion’s Arch will survive!

Now one of Scarlet’s probes is situated right underneath the rocks that started everything. This could herald the end of one of the prettiest underwater locales in the game on Tuesday the 18th as the Scarlet story approaches it’s climax. Not to mention the possible loss of the reminiscent remnants of old LA. Not to mention horrible changes to NEW Lion’s Arch as we know it.

As I said, some folks already have difficulty seeing at “night”, even now. Not everyone has perfect vision. So if a change is made, it MUST BE OPTIONAL (i.e. a slider) or else some players will just plain not be able to play at all.

I speak of PvE ONLY! There is no argument you can make against nighttime darkness being an individual choice in PvE.

WvW (and PvP? Is there day/night in PvP?) should remain on an equal footing for all (no slider). If they make night darker there, then some people may have to drop out at those times due to poor eyesight.

Gamma adjustment is NOT an option for me, thanks for the suggestion. If I make night darker, then day becomes darker too. Manually adjusting back and forth all the time would be even more immersion-breaking than having the too-bright nights we currently have.

TL;DR: We need a slider labeled “PvE Nighttime Darkness Level”

…Can we GET RID of these guys already?

I have been whispered by these guys 8 times in the last 8 hours now. I used to get it just once in awhile, but now it’s becoming an epidemic.

I REPORT and BLOCK them every time. Time for another massive Gold Seller ban, guys!
____________________

EDIT: These guys apparently have a list of legitimate players, and are whispering them from the tutorial missions. I am getting them HOURLY now. Currently two of the guys I have blocked are online in the Defense of Shaemoor, and a third is in The Great Hunt. Not only are they bugging me pretty much hourly now, but this can’t be good for new incoming players either; having their tutorial session accompanied by these guys. I imagine they are getting player names from there too.

This is not like mistaking an honest player for a bot. There is no error here. I sent in the reports when they happened. You have the text and the names. No honest player is spending hours in the Tutorial. These are the real “bad guys” and it is time they were removed from the game.

+1 for Slider. Player’s OPTION is always better than forcing something on them. I would love to see it darker during game night and in underground settings, but I have some friends who already can’t see very well in some spots. If “true” darkness was forced upon them, then they would have to wait around in town until the sun came up again.

The underwater camera on the Norn female is bugged. As you zoom in, the camera goes up and over her head. The pictures included below are zoomed in all the way. I included a comparison with some other Races / Sexes.

Male AsuraOkay

Female SylvariOkay

Female HumanOkay

Male CharrSort of okay. He’s bulky and his head thrusts forward more than the other races, so from behind he’s acceptable. From the front he’s not so hot.

Female NornNot very good from the front or rear. Way low when looking from behind. Nearly disappears completely when viewed from the front, due to the forward-angle of the body underwater.

It would be helpful if other players could test the Race/Sex combinations I haven’t checked and report any problems.

Please address ASAP. Thanks!

When I saw somebody else post theirs a long time ago, I had a long way to go. I had to be extra careful at the end to avoid going over.

My Achievement Points (8719) match my Account number (Hamfast.8719)

Now that’s an achievement I can appreciate!

The Makings of a Lawsuit?

Okay, I’m still not certain what I should do about Tixx. I don’t wish to put a dark cloud over everyone’s Wintersday festivities, but I also don’t want anyone else to come to grief over his seeming lack of morals. I am so confused! What to do?

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed. I was going to confront Tixx when I ran into one of his guests leaving the airship; a fellow named “Hef”. He stopped me before I went in and made things worse.

Hef listened to my story and insisted that I not do anything rash until I had a chance to calm down and think about it. The dear even invited me to stay at his mansion over the Wintersday holiday to help me relax. What could be more sensible? Such a gentleman! I’m glad some people aren’t hampered by Tixx’s version of “morality”!

Only three more days until Wintersday! I’m all ready for a big online town party or two! Do you suppose they’ll do anything special for us? (Like add back in the ability to earn doll frames and ingredients? I held onto my leftovers from last year to finish off my collection and make an everlasting tonic or two.)

legendary appearance

in Suggestions

Hamfast.8719

Nothing legendary about “footprints” to me. They’re the primary reason I haven’t even considered making a Legendary. And the “swooshes” through the air (like the greatswords leave behind). And the Charlie Brown “Pig-Pen” cloud around my character that obscures the pretty armor I worked very hard to attain. When they give us check-boxes to toggle these effects on and off, THEN I will consider working on a Legendary.

Legendary weapons in Guild Wars 2 have become like modern movies. They are all about screaming “look at me!” The special effects are flashy, and get you to buy a ticket. But the more over the top they are, the worse it is, and the movie flops without some substance behind it. Have you really looked at the greatswords? Behind all the particle effects, they look like a 3 year old drew them.

I prefer substance to flash. A good looking weapon. Bright and ornate for the good guys. Dark and evil-looking for the bad guys. But overdone special effects ruin it. I typically sneer and think “idiot” when someone runs by tracking oil puddles in their wake, or blocks my camera view with those swooshes in the air.

Again, I am not using this thread as a way to defend female players, it’s a simple question.

Why is it that most guys think only guys play MMOs?

It’s an innocent question… Lets not all jump on Jaymee butt for it.

Because the majority of MMO players are male.

I didn’t see your ectos post, so I don’t know if you in any way alluded to your gender there. But your forum screen name is pretty gender-neutral (and spelled many ways).

For the most part, the English language still uses the male pronoun when referring to groups or when addressing readers of unknown gender. (“Mailmen” is still a cleaner, more natural-seeming term than “mail-persons”). So the response may have been just in keeping with accepted literary parameters rather than a prejudiced slight against females.

That being said, I am older than you. I am male. The first video game I ever owned was THE first home video game console, the Odyssey 2000. I come from ages long past when women were indeed the minority target audience. Yet I am the YOUNGEST in my old-fogey’s Guild comprised 50/50 male to female, which I believe is probably the correct ratio in gaming these days. And our most productive member is female.

So there. You’re right. Anyone who ever states that only men play video games is probably not a man himself. He’s probably a little boy.

By the way, all the GW1 packaging including all the expansions had women on the box cover. This is NOT just a bunch of sexy advertising on boxes to attract young males either, since many major characters in the game, both good and evil, are women. ArenaNet seems pretty balanced on that front. More so, perhaps, than we are in real-life yet. So don’t let the little boys get to you. They’ll learn as they get older and appreciate it all the more.

Next Dance Book

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

First book was HORRIBLE! Those aren’t dances… those are 2-second (at most) steps repeated over and over. Thank God I previewed it on YouTube first and didn’t pay for one!

There does need to be another volume, but this time FULL DANCES.

Even better would be a “Dance with a Partner” book, where you select a dance and then offer someone else the chance to join you. If they accept, you do a coordinated dance together. This would be hard if touching and holding each other were involved, given the disparity in character sizes. But it would be a huge seller if they could pull it off.

Hehe… yeah. I especially noticed this in Honor of the Waves path 1. That Champion Icebrood Troll just seems to have it out for my Elementalist. There’s 4 other players there, but he always seems to just bore right past them in a single-minded effort to crunch squishy little ol’ me. Maybe I’m paranoid, but I don’t seem to see this with my other Professions. I deal with it, and I play a pretty good Elementalist, but it is annoying to have the target on her head so much of the time compared to the others.

The N is near! ...I hope! (Pictures)

Hamfast.8719

I use the rotating compass. “Up” on the mini map is always what is in front of me.

This is the way my car GPS works. This is the way it works in most other games I have played. It is natural to me. I have tried the “static” map, and just can’t get accustomed to it.

THE PROBLEM: As you can see from the pictures below, the letter N (indicating North) is often obscured by other map indicators. (Even when there is nothing else showing, the N is so tiny that it can still be hard to see).

1) We need a nice VISIBLE letter N.
2) We need ALL FOUR COMPASS DIRECTIONS.
3) Direction indicators need to be ALWAYS ON TOP of the other miscellaneous icons.
__________

The game started out with a compass in Beta, very similar to the GW1 compass. I was devastated when they replaced it with the mini-map. I always knew where I was in GW1, but I find myself constantly referring to the main full-screen map in GW2 to tell what direction I’m going.

This would be a super easy little adjustment to make. And it would be a HUGE quality-of-life improvement for very little effort on behalf of the programmers. Please consider adopting this suggestion.

Thank you.

Why are you forcing us to craft?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hamfast.8719

I am more than willing to put time and effort into getting Ascended armor and weapons. All I want is more alternatives how to do it.

People come to GW2 to do their own thing… WvW, PvP, PvE, Dungeons, Fractals, etc. My thing is most definitely not crafting. I can do it. I don’t want to. It feels like I’m being made to do homework, but I can do it.

This is a game. I want to be rewarded for gameplay. So let us do our thing and earn our Ascendeds our way. I’m not saying to make it easier. I’m saying to make it more fun. Surely we can be given a variety of ways to get Ascended equipment?
