I’m usually really sweet… but this an internet forum and you know how it has to be.

Asura with skimpy armor would be awkward. Who would want that?
Well I don’t know how to put this exactly buuuut
I think you mean butttttttt
Great screenshots, love them. I use the same skirt on Kana:
No, that would be very bad. Everyone would buy out the runes on the TP and then make thousands of gold. This happened with Traveler’s runes.
Lets look at what they’ve done for hardcore players:
- Guild missions
- 24 dungeon paths (not counting story, since that is casual)
- Three world bosses + one dedicated world boss upate
- Two updates dedicated to fractals
- Many fractals offering content not available in open-world (e.g agony mechanics)
- Ascended gear tier
- New agony resist infusions
- WvW map updates + a new WvW map to solve queues
- WvW seasonal rewards
- Rewards for grinding achievment points
Lets take a look at what they’ve done for casual players:
- ??
- Living Story?
It could be argued that many of these can be unlocked or participated in by casual players, however casual players are not the focus, as some of them have insane time and/or money requirements to reach.

Yes, many play on Linux.
Some Linux discussion is included here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Official-Linux-Client
(Ignore the thread title.)
Some notes:
Yeah, they’re not making a Linux version. The mac version’s been in beta for 1.5 years+. If they can’t get a mac version out, why would they even begin on a Linux version?
The Mac version is just using Wine, so it would be identical to a “Linux version”, since we currently play the game in Linux using Wine. :P
The difference is official support can result in more bugs being fixed.

I really wish people would stop spamming about how its a server merge without understanding the technology at all or why it is implemented.
Its highly unlikely given that they’ve been working on the China version. The changes to the English client (NA and EU), is mostly long-term projects that finished.
This was said in the developer livestream, something like “we’re working on alot of things all of the time that people don’t know about, and we can’t say anything even though we’d like to” and mostly that these changes were started long ago.
After the Chinese release we will likely see an upsurge of developer activity. So a change like this might appear in living story season 2.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
Three words: free to play.
That’s about it. Ive tried several other ftp mmos, but you are lvl capped, or have to pay to unlock content. Other than the first initial purchase, you can access all content without ever paying a dime. That and the art work. Simply breath taking.
Yea sadly it is really buy to play. Free to play means you pay nothing at all where as buy to play means you spend money that front but can then later pay or just play for free.
I wouldn’t be suprised if this game goes fully F2P one day, given that they keep putting the game on sale and have no interest in box sell expansions.
I think the main reason they stick to B2P at the moment is spammers. They ran a few trial weekends here and there and it resulted in hundreds of gold sellers spamming people for months on end… :/
Unfortunately the B2P model also harms new player uptake.
Prediction:
*Chorus of yeses on the forum
*ANet puts in their updates “Good news! Commander tags now account bound!”
*People post complaints about wasting hundred of gold buying multiple commander tags.
Just a note: Completing the personal story twice is not enough to see it from every race’s perspective, although you only have to do it until the Battle of Claw Island. For example, it dramatically changes for Sylvari, who meet Traherane ahead of time. And alot of the characters who you meet or die later come from other races stories and it all makes alot more sense than it does intially.
The tonics idea is just stupid. Better to turn outfits into boxes of armor.
The Warlock’s damage increases with each condition. Reaching 7k crit and beyond is possible with full Berserker gear and the right setup.
If you see this skill in your log better start hitting your condition cleanse.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
I am a bit confused how everyone is arguing that as -casual- players, you won’t be able to catch the -hardcore- bosses. Er.. What?
You aren’t casual if you’re trying to catch such content. Its was implemented for the sole reason of appeasing hardcore players who wanted that content.
The best game world that was ever created.
Now all we need is more of it.
You won’t even have to reset traits. You’ll be able to press -/+ to modify them.
I agree, this would be the best course of action. We depend on overlapping events not only for catching them at multiple times of day, but also so that they pull huge zergs away and we can quietly kill some boss with 10-15 players.
Your data is bugged. You can try to repair the game.:

Also beware that to get the title and star you have to uncover every single area, not just get all of the objectives on each map.
That’s not true actually. “Areas” being uncovered relate only to achievement point explorer stuff. For the star and 100% map completion, you only need the POIs, vistas and skill points.
You’re right, My bad. :P I’ve done it so many times that I’ve lost track.
Also beware that to get the title and star you have to uncover every single area, not just get all of the objectives on each map.
I would say that one of your memory sticks is bad or stressed (clock too high, etc.).

No because its embarassing to invite people to a game with only one meta. The people I have invited before have left after only a short time. I learned my lesson.
The most common complaints I got from friends:
- Nobody plays this (Megaserver will partly solve this)
- Nobody wants me in their party (Speed clearing/ DPS metagame)
- The game is too zergy (paritally solved by EOTM).
- The combat is too simple (has yet to be addressed in any way, shape or form).
- There are no expansions, or plans for any expansions.
- Living story is unapproachable to new players due to being unreplayable.Getting a guild would help most of those “issues”.
Had a friend who left the game after being repeatedly kicked from guilds due to rules regarding representation, classes, gear, etc. And if you read around in threads you will see even guild leaders admitting that sometimes recruitment is unapproachable because the bigger guilds expect you to come to them.

NCSoft makes a lot of money off of GW2 as it is. Why would they purposely lose profit for a change that benefits no one but Valve?
In theory it would bring console/TV users to the gem store. In theory. Unfortunately, the issue is that Valve is trying to market it for other audiences instead of the one they should be targetting – console users.
I actually think that finishing is too strong and needs to go away. The downed state in this game is supposed to compensate for how easy it is to die (survival is about half of that over similar PvP/RvR-oriented games). But finishers just render it useless, since if the enemy has stability or goes stealth its all rendered moot.
On top of this, resurrecting someone is a tad too difficult right now in many situations. Once someone is downed or defeated, most of the time they are gone forever unless they are in the middle of a group that can spam rezz them. Resurrecting players are incredibly vulnerable and that is why the dodge back when they start taking damage, because it is better for one player to survive than for both to die.
I fully support a crawling mechanic and I hope it completely messes finishers and makes it somewhat easier to resurrect allies!
This may come as a suprise to some, but a Mac, LInux, and SteamOS port would all be more or less the same thing. This is because they all use an underlying Unix framework and OpenGL graphics. The major differences are on the libraries used, but from a development standpoint that’s just making certain code sections disabled when they are not compiling for the relevant platform.
Unix and OpenGL is actually the most common configuration in the world oustide of Windows PCs, XBox, and a few other exceptions. Even most mobile devices use a small Unix kernel (typically Linux) and OpenGL ES.
The reason game developers don’t do this? Testing. Testing requires that the physically purchase the machines for testing purposes. This means alot of money spent on various configurations of a system for every OS, and man hours to test it.
Porting is almost never the problem; making sure it works is. Thats why bugs don’t easily get fixed in things like the Mac client (which is Wine-based).
There’s also the cost overhead of developing an OpenGL engine. Currentlythey rely on Wine’s Direct3D to OpenGL layer, and Valve has one of these too, but theirs is far simpler and probably wouldn’t work for a game like GW2.

You gave up on Ele too soon. I can understand why, but when you hit 80 (or ceratinly near 80), eles turn a corner and become much better. I nearly gave up on my Ele at mid level for the reasons you listed – I am extermely glad I pushed forward with him
Hi thanks for your opinion.
For that i read in the Ele’s forum, most of players dont like the point that Ele is atm in this game. Thats alot of foruns that players are “crying” for drastic changes on profession. I guess i will leve it again one day, but not now.
I would like to read some experienced Necro’s,Engineer’s and Ranger’s saying something about their professions gamestyle, how they feel about it, etc..
Out of all my characters, I would rank my Ele as the best. But she’s in Celestial gear, which I found completely changes the game for Elementalists.
I hope they introduce more content like the Marionette so I get to see all the idiots laying dead on the ground.
Seriously half the time I had to finish that thing alone.
If other sets get a stat increase I would think that zerkers should get their stats back to where they belong. Its not the gear that is the problem. It is peoples attitudes and mob AI.
As neither one of these will change. I do not see the zerker meta changing. I also don’t see efficient game play as a problem.
I’m sorry, but vs 1shot what did you want?
The enemies to dodge? After that they’d still get 1shot anyway.
They blind, block, push, if they up the frequency of that there would be no end to the rage and you’d have the same problem, 1shot.Now what about the non trash mobs? Specially in dungeons/fractals where you have a 5 player limit?
Same story, it’s a case of all zerkers kill it as quickly as possible, anything goes wrong and someone dies here comes the rage fest, others are to blame because they aren’t doing it fast enough, “the enemy was allowed time to kill us! How dare they?!”In a trinity MMO 92% of the players go for DPS, 7% tank, 1% heal.
In a game like GW2 DPS didn’t need to be over the top, players already love to play a damage class even if they’re heavily dependant, but thanks to way crit damage works in GW2 playing anything else just looks silly.
This is my experience with MMOs as well. I have played games with heavy trinities and those without trinities, and its always a DPS game. The DPS players will also always be the vocal majority, always going on about how their class isn’t balanced, doesn’t do enough damage or gets killed too easy in PvP.
The reason people hate trinities so much is having to form balanced groups of DPS, tank and healers because finding enough of each (especially healers) is a huge pain and can have a waiting time of hours. Think about that.
It all boils down to DPS, DPS, DPS, in every single game. Thats why many games even have the DPS of the weapon listed right on it instead of damage.
Guild Wars 2 just takes it to the farthest extent: zerk meta is all there is.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
The zerk meta is rooted in players minds, not the developers standpoint. I have always felt that way – there is more than one way to skin a cat, is the old saying and in this game the same can be said.
it is the players that have the issue not the game.
To be fair, the game mechanics far from encourage other builds. For example, ANet intentionally makes healing power nearly useless. The only reason its useful in PvP and WvW is because bunkers (wearing Dire or PVT) are king there.
This kind of examples exist all throughout the game, and it makes no sense. In trying too hard to get rid of the trinity, they end up with no dynamics at all. It would’ve been better to find a soft point between GW1 and GW2 mechanics.
Hopefully they will address these issues in future releases…
A Linux port may be possible if it was a portable app.
That essentially means that the entire thing is packaged in a way that it can be moved from system to system and will still run without depending on the underlying system. Typically, this involves using special software suite to pack all the dependancies and everything into one executable (typically ELF), so if the system has a Linux kernel, an X server and OpenGL, it will run.
Guild Wars 2 is already a portable app on Windows if you ignore the DirectX runtime, unlike other games which must be painstakingly installed first.
Always so many conspiracies.
They reduced critical damage because it was broken from a formula standpoint, the low numbers had to be rounded when distributing it across the armor parts and this resulted in a very coarse granularity and ultimately an overdistribution of points, which has now been fixed. That’s all there is to it.
It really wouldn’t make sense to make a native Linux client. Just dealing with the huge number of distributions and their individual packaging requirements would be needlessly time consuming.
If they made a Winelib executable like they did for the Mac version, or distributed a “Wine Bottle”, it wouldn’t be any different than just using Wine the normal way. Installing Wine on Linux is very easy, and if it isn’t attached to the application you’re running, you can include custom patches to fix bugs.
Expecting ArenaNet to devote resources to writing and maintaining an OpenGL graphics pipeline for MacOS/Linux is just insane. They barely have time to maintain the Direct3D renderer.
That said, I do hope that ArenaNet at least tries to avoid making changes that completely break Wine.
Because no Linux thread would be complete without specs, I’m running the game under Gentoo Linux 3.14 with an Intel i5-3570, 8G RAM at 1600MHz and a GTX 760 (binary drivers) with Wine 1.7.15 using the CSMT patchset, and I get 40-60 FPS just about everywhere at maximum graphics settings. (performance is CPU-bound) Without the CSMT patchset, it usually averages 20-40.
However, ever since the EFLA release, the game crashes with an OOM error every hour or so, I have the same “c0000005” crashes as the Mac version, there is frame rate jitter when resources load from disk, and all paths of CoE become practically unplayable after about halfway through for some reason. Otherwise, and especially before the EFLA release, everything works great. It’s completely playable, and I’ve been doing so for just over a year.
The game is leaking texture memory for unkown reasons. We haven’t yet been able to track down the problem (its likely in Wine, not GW2), but setting “Medium” or “Low” can buy you another hour or two.
The game has this behavior in Windows XP 32-bit, but for some reason its coming out on Linux even on 64-bit systems when it shouldn’t.
With recent improvements I no longer crash at 3.2GB, but at 3.7GB.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
I understand that you’re trying to be serious, however the way you state all of your points comes off as more of a joke. Its clear that you mostly play Thief and have no real understanding of the other professions.
The Thief is balanced around their ability to stealth – which players underestimate. When used properly, stealth is a catch-all get-out-of-jail free card. Even if you discount that you can often get away with it, it also gives you the advantage of ambushing your enemy, so psychological factor is very important too.
On top of that, you say that other professions aren’t nerfed by the changes, but that is completely false. Every other class relies on critical damage in exactly the same way. In fact, the Thief probably has the least reliance on this, because if they fail to land enough damage on their opponent they can just reset and try again.
The important factors to understand in other classes’ balance is: visiblity and mobility. Both of these play heavily in combat, especially mobility. Stealth (lack of of visiblity) and mobiltiy are the Thiefs strengths and what they are balanced around.
For example, you argue Warrior is far better, but they are horrible on both of these.
Nobody says you have to run full zerker (or similar glass) on Thief in PvP/WvW and just spike people down. Its not like they have less health and armor than a Ranger or Engineer, and its not like they have less weapon choices or abilities. You’re chosing to see that there’s only one way to play the Thief when there are many.
All classes have problems, some of them far worse. Maybe you should try playing Ele without Celestial or PVT gear in PvP/WvW, when you die from one rogue AoE.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
Engineer has lots and lots of ranged weapons. From their basic P/P set that inflicts nearly every condition in seconds, “one hour before my hand wants to fall off” grenades and the venerable Elixer gun which has 1200 range when traited. Some even like the Rifle, but I find its lack of conditions problematic.
I want to play a Ranged-Only class
You need to find another game to play then…
GW2 is very anti ranged combat. As shown by:-
-Best way of killing anything in PvE, group into a ball, buff, melee, revive until foe dead.
-Every good missile weapon has been nerfed to oblivion, example Ranger shortbow, Warrior Longbow, Thief shortbow.Really, don’t play GW2 with a ranged character only ends in tears…
There are other things to do in this game besides dungeons. Going into PvP/WvW without a ranged weapon is just asking to be kited to death.
Pure melee are very easy for a seasoned ranged character to destroy.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
Even worse is that people you have blocked can see what map you are on, whether you are online or not, and everything else (unless you set invisible). I have witnessed a few case of in-game stalking that were not solved by a block.
Block is too broken to be useful in its current state.
That leech is heavily broken. It will even leech health from completely stealthed players and various other issues. It also never ends once it begins, until the player is dead, and then he just moves onto the next player.
The only way to stop it is with a stun…
I think our best bet would be to put pressure on the WINE developers to improve the performance of games that are designed take advantage of multicore CPU’s.
NCSoft has pretty much ruled out making a Linux client but maybe if we keep the pressure up they’ll reconsider.
That said, if and when they get around to developing a Linux client, I think they should consider making it for Wayland instead of X so that all the video frames run sequentially.
My understanding is that X sometimes runs video frames out of sequence so frame 200 can come before frame 199 and that can make the game appear buggy when the real problem is with the X server which NCSoft has no control over.
This is already happening. The CSMT patches are being integrated into the main branch. But don’t expect it to help much, most of the problem is not Wine but that GW2 has a very terrible engine performance-wise.
It runs bad even on Windows, and even if you have a really good PC.
We’re hitting up to 250% CPU usage (2.5x cores) with the latest release of WineGW2 and NVIDIA threaded optimizations, which is pretty much the maximum that most games can use and still only running about 30 FPS in Rata Sum on low to medium settings on a AMD 1100T at 3.3GHz and Intel Core i7 at 2.2GHz and GTX480 video card which is still very powerful by MMO standards….
By the way the problem you listed does not exist anymore. NVIDIA’s OpenGL library sends commands directly to their kernel driver, only using the X server as a conduit. Performance in Linux is pretty much optimal now.
You can see this in “pure” OpenGL games that get very high FPS.
When I had Windows 7 (before my 1TB Seagate Barracuda called it quits), this game was awesome, now that I have to use WINE, this game is awful.
I have a ATI Radeon HD 5770 and if I use the open source drivers the fan runs at full speed and temperature exceeds 75C so I use the proprietary drivers.
That may be, but countless threads on this forum suggest its the game engine. Granted, Wine has some overhead for the D3D to OpenGL translation, but both CSMT and NVIDIA threaded optimizations work together to solve the multicore issues.
One problem is that this game is DirectX 9, which is not thread-safe. That means that its ability to use multiple cores was already limited.
I think our best bet would be to put pressure on the WINE developers to improve the performance of games that are designed take advantage of multicore CPU’s.

What is with all these people demanding refunds or extra content from ANet when they bought something fully knowing what it was?
I honestly just don’t get it.
You can’t yet. This is being added in the next update.
Try not ignoring the game’s rating which is obviously placed there for a reason.
All of the minis look pretty bad up close. They have to greatly reduce the detail of the models when turning them into minis.
Keep in mind that with the upcoming wardrobe system you will be able to use other orders’ armor and weapons looks on any character. It just requires you to have one character join the relevant order and purchase the relevant item which permanently unlocks the skin in your wardrobe.
So chose your order based upon fun, not requirement.
Hold onto it. Ascended items are becoming account bound soon.
To further the OPs comment about grouping, I’m disappointed that we still don’t have an inspect feature to view both gear and traits on other players. Some of us care about clearing content quickly and efficiently and inspect will help us find like minded players and allow us to “play how we want”. We need a way to avoid snowflake gearing and builds.
So basically you want to be able to look into peoples private information about how their character is skilled and what they wear whenever you want?
X-ray gear check, that’s new. Like this game needs more elitism.
And… how do you expect those players to “play how they want” if you are doing this? You’re forcing them to “play how you want”. Its not like they can go somewhere else to clear the same dungeon. And all LFG will use such a feature.
There are bad ideas and then there are horrific ones.
This whole feature patch introduced more gold sinks and further increased the profitability of their Gem Store.
I’m sorry to say that you hit the nail on the head with your post.
No – it is to add a different way to play. If you can’t see than, then maybe you shouldn’t be playing games at all.
No he’s actually right all it does is increase their profit margin in the gem store. Dyes are now sold through the gemstore and will no longer drop in open world. The wardrobe change is yet another one.
Dyes are craftable, and always have been. You can also buy them with Laurels, and always could. And they have always been purchasable from the gem store.
They won’t drop in open world because after this patch some players will be making upwards of 8x (assuming one character of each class) fewer dye purchases from the TP, thus their price would drop and they would be WORTHLESS anyway.
For something to be worth money, it has to be in demand. That means the demand must exceed the supply. This game has a far better econemy than most…
If you took a poll or tallied what features are important to players a month ago, not a lot of the features in the big April patch would have been on there.
Which is, again, your subjective opinion.
Furthermore, as Gumball tried to point out, even if it were true, would it really prove anything ?Yes it certainly is my opinion.
And would it prove anything…. Hell No! It’s Anet’s game and they will continue to make changes that benefit themselves and game revenue. I’m simply pointing out, in my opinion, they dropped the ball in making changes that many players really wanted to see.
And I will also point out that without such revenue, you would not have a game to play. So it doesn’t matter if they dropped the ball. You have to decide whether you want a game to play without what you want, or no game at all.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
There’s no point in switching servers now unless its for WvW. The Megaserver system will render changing worlds for PvE obsolete (unless you want to RP).
Guardian is a good beginner class, but beware of its low health pool. Until you reach the end game and learn how to handle your character in the best way, you will probably want to start with some kind of Vitality gear.
Low HP is mostly vulnerability to “Conditions”, and you get more ways to remove them over time so that such gear becomes unneccessary.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
It should be -.-
I think the end game of gw2 is pretty lazy and boring they need to add more guild activity thats the whole point of this game its about guilds
Guilds are actually one of the worst implemented mechanics in this game. Essentially being a huge grind for influence and mediocre benefits.
It is definitely not about guilds. I wish it was.
I just completed the personal story for the first time which actually required me for the first time in the personal story to play with other players. Of course, being an MMO, I played with other players in other aspects of the game, but it did feel very inconsistent making the player join a group or grab a friend to do Arah with. (I won’t even go into how inconsistent it is making that dungeon compulsory for the personal story, but not the others).
Don’t get me wrong, it was fun, and I played with a great bunch of people, but that was the only time I felt as if a dungeon should really have a solo mode. But after searching online initially for to see if I could do Arah story mode solo (I know I can’t now) and seeing one comment that said something along the lines of it’s an MMO, just lfg or ask your guild, I kind of had to agree. It’s fine that there are players who would rather do things at their own pace and play solo, but I also think its better for an MMO to encourage more cooperative play. Judging by the comments so far, most dungeons are already possible to do solo, so I don’t see why it would be necessary to include a solo mode.
This is false. Explorable dungeons are only possible to solo because of Berserker gear, skill and exploting mob AI issues (like, just running past them).
The story dungeons on the other hand all require at least two very skilled people on heavies (Warrior/Guardian) or three moderately skilled people. Otherwise, you’re going to be encountering bosses that you can’t pass.
And in any case when you don’t have five people, you’re looking at 2-3 hours .
You say promote cooperative content, so how do you plan to make the community that participates in such content less toxic? Simple answer: You can’t. It automatically attracts teh hardcorez and thus why people like to solo.
Finding a “friendly” group that doesn’t require you to 5warzerkstack isn’t as easy as all the dungeon runners make it out to be. In fact, its nearly impossible.
(edited by Hannelore.8153)
OK, so it’s not water combat that sucks, it’s just that the elementalist is incredibly difficult to be effective with?
I mean, I was trying pretty hard to do damage.
So far I’ve only died once in water combat, it’s just very unproductive…
Like I said, I drag the enemies to the shore and vaporize them in seconds with with basically 2 skills.
If I can destroy the Ash Horizon on Air atunement, I am sure you can kill a few mobs.
Ferocity hurts all sets that use crit dmg (e.g Cavalier, Valkyrie, Celestial), not just Berserker.
I understand why its neccessary though, they can’t scale critical damage properly compared to other stats, and it creates balance issues.
You can get unidentified dyes with laurels………
You can also craft most dyes.
