Should gemstore items give AP?

I don’t see a problem with it. If achievement points offered a real advantage in game, it would be a problem.

But that’s really what this game ends up being about: skins and achievement points.

Anyway, imho, no, gemstore items should never give AP.

And actually, aren’t some Exotics ridiculously expensive anyway? Like Infinite Light or Immobulus? I reckon those skins would be an excellent reward for crafting 18 Ascended armor pieces.

Except she said “named exotics that drop from Champion loot bags”. The exotics you mention are forge weapons.

I’ve read the thread, it’s not actually about inflation, but a misunderstanding of what indicators of inflation are, it’s about precursor prices.

Whilst yes, the thread shows misunderstandings regarding inflation and yes, precursor prices are what caused the thread’s creation, what I really think the thread boils down to is obtaining rewards and how so much of that is tied to money grind. Many people are sick of endlessly grinding money for nearly everything. (And I find it sad that you only took inflation/precursors away from that thread.)

It seems your primary concern is that TP flipping is the only way to make money and that’s upsetting people? We’ve discussed in great depth why that isn’t true.

It’s not the only way, but it most certainly is the best way. Those people you see on these forums showing off how they have one of every legendary? Not a single one of them achieved that feat without substantial TP flipping. I think a lot of players would appreciate more balance between items that can just be outright bought and those that cannot, the later being obtained through skillful play and completing challenges (most reasonable people don’t want to stop TP flipping, I know I don’t even though I’ve zero interest in it.) Whilst I have two legendaries, I don’t necessarily feel all that proud of them because all it took was mind-numbing money grinding. But my Liadri mini I got the first year or SAB Tribulation mode weapon weapon skins? I’m more proud of those.

As it is now, those scrolls have just sat in my bank.

In no way is that post anything like how a 4 year old would behave. It’s an adult expressing his/her opinion on how past events have taken place and the likelihood of the same actions/processes returning a different outcome. (edit: honestly it feels like you’re being a bit rude to some people here [maybe personal histories I don’t know about] and are potentially inflaming thing even more. So participate in what Regina wants and maybe just ignore the posts you feel that are unhelpful? Seems more constructive rather than bordering on insulting people.)

As other people are saying, Living Story just doesn’t have the replay value dungeons have. You basically do it once for the story, then a few times to get the achievements. Development manpower should be focused on content that has stronger replay value, such as dungeons, WvW and SAB, NOT content that’s abandoned after being played for an hour or two.

Quoted for truth. ANet is certainly giving us content and permanent content at that. It has been enjoyable content. But the replay value is incredibly low. The Living Story is not the right kind of content to keep people busy for longer periods, nor is it that great to play in groups (at least for me. I want to do story things at my own pace, listen to dialogue, read carefully, not be distracted by what people are saying on Mumble, etc.) This game desperately needs more intimate group content, for groups of 5-10 people… new dungeons, new fractals, something like Underworld, FoW, Urgoz, more Guild Missions.. things to bring people in guilds together more than one to two times, in my humble opinion.

Then when you do get closer LET US KNOW. SHARE with us some concept art for new weapons, get players feedback BEFORE you release them.

Any player in the game could have told you that 300g per commander tag was unacceptable, but your lack of communication with the player base left you scrambling at the last minute and working weekends for something that could have been avoided by talking to the community for 30 seconds.

This is a great example of how holding back information until the last minute and having no public beta servers for testing and feedback (though yes, I realise there are economy concerns regarding that) are problematic.

So a bloggers wife, who is an “avid player” and “highly skilled” hardcore mmo gamer cant farm enough gold to buy a precursor and thats why she left the game.

Can’t? How about ’won’t’. She won’t do it because farming money for some people is not something they want to do.

Putting it down because the perspective of a hardcore, experienced MMO player would NOT be to QQ about how hard it is to get a legendary … and QUIT over it since it’s mostly just aesthetic. Sounds more like the credentials of a hardcore RPer.

Consider there are games a decade ago that most hardcore MMO players would have played where they literally had to raid for hundreds of hours to get a BiS bit of gear; a legendary pails in comparison to what any real hardcore, experienced player would have experienced.

Another reading fail.

The author wrote:

As soon as my wife had everything but the precursor, the process of crafting her Legendary stopped being fun for her. The last thing on her list is a single item that can be obtained only through the gods’ own luck or a great deal of gold, far more than the hundreds of gold she had already painstakingly farmed to put together the rest of the sword’s ingredients. And not wanting to grind wasn’t really the issue, either: Like me, she sometimes finds grinding relaxing. This is a person who helped me farm ridiculous amounts of materials for my title in World of Warcraft; she camped rare notorious monsters endlessly in Final Fantasy XI; she gathers Atma in FFXIV with only the occasional dark muttering.

I don’t think the difficulty of obtaining Dawn alone would have turned her away if it weren’t for GW2’s gem to gold conversion.

She didn’t stop because it was difficult. She stopped because she didn’t like the way one most go about obtaining a precursor in addition to the not-so-subtle real money -> gems -> in game gold, Anet pushes for.

Whilst I’ve ground out two legendaries, I too refuse to do it for any others until they implement a concrete path to obtain precursors (I’ve the gold to make another legendary, but no way in heck I’m paying over 1k gold for a precursor. I refuse to on principle.) I’ll do challenging content and hours and hours of it.. but I’m done grinding money for them.

Did you play Guild Wars 1 first though.

You asked for the opinions of people who played GW2 first, didn’t you? Seems a bit obvious I answered from that view point.. also already said earlier in this thread that I started playing GW1 last October.

Because most of the stories really aren’t all that good. Not from an objective point of view.

I don’t agree. Many people don’t agree. I’ve enjoyed the GW1 stories a lot more than I have GW2’s. I keep hoping and hoping they’ll bring more GW1 lore into GW2.

There are flaws within flaws that pulled me out of Guild Wars 1 all the time. Saying that it’s good after experiencing it first gives you this nostalgic tinge that allows you to believe say that Prince Rurik was somehow some great character. Prince Rurik was a cardboard cutout. He was cliche. There weren’t very deep and meaningful characters in most of Guild Wars 1. We all heard complaints about Komir after all.

Prophecies was the weakest. And just because two characters were a bit annoying (still sad when Rurik died and then was used again by the Lich, though), doesn’t mean the entire story is bad.

You can’t experience Guild Wars 1 for the first time again and it hasn’t really been 30 years. The difference is the first time I experienced Guild Wars 1 I was in my 40s and already a professional editor. There were things in that game that made me want to burn my eyes out.

Welp, I experienced it for the first time less than a year ago and am in my 30s. Sure the graphics are old, but they’re still not all that horrible and I can appreciate how awesome they must have been ‘back in the day’. I’ve also experienced GW1 after playing over a year’s worth of GW2.. and a lot of hours put in during that time.

Simplest example I can think of was the Blacktide Den mission bonus. Kill all the Ringkhail Monitors. Nothing in game tells you to do this. There’s no reason to do it. It doesn’t further the story. In fact, it hinders the story.

Yes some bonuses don’t make sense. But others do. Your point is? Again, one silly thing doesn’t make the whole bad.

Anyway, it’s not as great as people make it out to be

Disagree entirely.

Nowhere did I say it is a perfect game, with a perfect story etc. Of course there will be silly or tiresome stuff here and there (as you mention, Blacktide Den or Kormir.. when she just stands there and doesn’t help you on your missions.) But on the whole, I think it’s a great game and I’ve had loads of fun with it. And right now, I’m playing it more than GW2… I’d rather that not to be the case, but there’s not much for me to do in GW2 at the moment aside from see the new story and that’s that.

Out of curiosity and this is a legit question, I wonder how many who played Guild Wars 2 first would think Guild Wars 1 was a better game.

That’s actually a tough question.

Obviously GW2’s world is better.. new engine, newer game and all that. I also enjoy active combat (dodging, jumping, casting on the move.)

But I find GW1’s stories to be better and I absolutely love how much stuff there is to complete. Achievements in it feel much more meaningful and I’m having a fun time slowly working towards filling out my HoM, complete vanquishing, exploration and all that. With the Zhaishen dailies (which I know weren’t always there), it doesn’t feel like a grind to slowly work my way through it all.

I also love how I can’t just faceroll through everything. Quite a bit of it feels harder than GW2. I really like the heroes too.. those have especially been a boon this late in the game.

It’s hard to really compare the two given their different ages, but I am tempted to say overall, GW1 is the better game. I know I so regret not playing this game in its prime. I’d be one of those working towards a character for DoA SC (takes me forever solo with my heroes :P .. and that third room of Foundry is a kitten!) and getting chaos gloves, etc. :P I feel GW2 misses some of the lofty goals GW1 has (complete everything plus bonuses on HM, vanquishing, gaining faction, etc) with specific, direct ways to attain most of what you want if you’re willing to put in the work.

Also, you’ll get to see the real Mesmer! Not the magical Pseudo-thief duelist we have here.

And you’ll get to see great necros as well.. real minion masters! I always find it interesting how the most OP classes in GW1 are the least in GW2 and vice versa.

Anyway OP, I started GW1 last October because I wanted to see the stories first hand and also unlock Hall of Monuments stuff. I’ve not regretted it! I’ve soloed most things (even hardmode dungeons) with heroes, though sometimes done a few things with one other friend. If you can find a person to give you tips (like how to flag your henchman/heroes, some good hero team builds [like 7 Hero Player Support], how to make good pulls, or pre-proting yourself), it will make your time in game easier and more fun. There still are active guilds out there, so you could try that as well.

Er, what is this spamming with CC you’re talking about? Don’t stand next to those orbs that are following you (keep kiting them) and don’t stand in red circles. I did this fight and its achievements on my necro which is one of the least mobile professions. With mesmer greatsword and focus orpistol, you should have no problem taking down the adds, whilst at the same time keeping a bit of distance from the statue (or stay to the sides of the statue). I had no problem. It reminded me a little of my days in GW1. I honestly would like to see the dev’s bring more of this kinda stuff into the game.

Micromanaging Scruffy isn’t so bad. Put him into defensive right away before fighting, kill the stuff with him and just talk to him afterwards. What’s so difficult about that?

Heroes in GW1 defended automatically, or were you literally disabling all their skills and inputting them manually?

I believe the poster was talking about NPCs who would follow you like the Ghostly Hero in the Crystal Desert missions or more specifically the golems in EotN. Those golems you could ask to follow you or stay put and in one part even ask them to switch between range, melee in defense (Against the Destroyers, I think it was… and in that one you had 3 golems you could manage.) (also, you could put heroes in Avoid Combat mode, fyi. )

I too was reminded of GW1 and thought it was a nice nod, nor did I have any problems managing him.

Lothirieth.3408

I agree with you HiddenNick. Quite frankly I’m getting a bit tired of people who buy and play a MMO yet don’t want to play with others and have everything catered to them. I’ve seen too many get far too upset at people who like group content having anything made for them (which is quite hypocritical…) This is a problem all MMOs have.

But of course compromise is always best. It would be cool if ANet could somehow make a solo and group version of these. The solo versions being what we have now, but the group ones changing the fights up a bit to facilitate more players. The problem with these story missions is that they don’t really facilitate replay. So what we really need are extra dungeons/raids/instanced encounters for 5-10-12ish people. I don’t agree with locking group-phobic people out of the main storyline, but dungeons with side stories or extras (such as Underworld, Domain of Anguish or all the EotN dungeons in GW1) would be very appreciated by the rest of us.

The things I have to complain about is the way you help Eir and Rytlock

Starting with Eir; you are supposed to take care of Son of Svanir and their totems, alone. But this instead got pushed into a world event with loads of other players, really making all of it uninteresting. Zerg content is always boring, uninteresting, this is no different.

Helping Rytlock to find the crown pieces; so anticliamtic. This legendary, special, mystical crown, just being scattered around like nothing. All I did was following the green star, search some rubbles and repeat. That was so uninteresting and gave me the biggest ’’meh’’ feeling I’m sure even ArenaNet could feel a cold breeze in their neck.

Regarding your second point, there are events that are done first. You just got there after they’d been completed. But, they aren’t new events.

TP-flipping, the bane of Guild Wars 2?

Traidingpost Flipping should brought in line

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Lothirieth.3408

Lothirieth.3408

Ok, hypothetical:
We increase rewards to dungeon running to let’s say triple what they currently are. This would make it VERY difficult for almost all players to earn better rewards anywhere but dungeon running.

Hypothetical: how about you start awarding people with bound armor/weapons/cosmetics as a reward from the dungeons, you know, like other games do. Seems you’d then satisfy more people. Flippers keep on flipping non-bound stuff, crafting materials, those that don’t have an interest in TP flipping can still go earn shiny stuff without having to worry so much about how much money they’re making. Also, I’d assume this wouldn’t mess with the economy so much either. This is the thing: a lot of us are asking for balance. We realise flipping goes on, that it’s not a bad thing and don’t necessarily begrudge the rich players that do flip as long as there are some rewards out there for people to go for that don’t involve being rich in order to obtain. In other MMOs, I didn’t worry about flippers because I knew I could go into raids and dungeons with my friends and still bling out my characters from the drops we’d get. I don’t necessarily want more coin. I want to go to ‘x’ challenging dungeon and have a reasonable chance at ‘x’ specific drop. Or I want to go through a long drawn out process of collecting bound drops or beating certain mobs to earn say, a precursor (like the mini moa chick or black moa pet in GW1 for example.. or even doing the Real of Torment ‘x’ times to get a tormented weapon.. and yeah I know you could sell the stones and ambrances there.)

To which I would respond that players have many resources for information and while some portion of this may be caused by that issue, it seems clear that it’s much more a matter of preference than education.

Thank you very much for saying this. It gets SO tiring to hear from the same people on these forums that those of us who don’t play the TP are just stupid and lazy. They never seem to get it that some of us just don’t plain want to because we find it incredibly boring. Maybe since you’ve said it, it will finally get through their thick skulls. :P I largely appreciate the system you’ve created here. I miss buy orders in other games and I like how there’s one big economy rather than server specific ones. But no offense, I’d rather lessen the amount I interact with it and earn gear directly rather than from selling ori, ectos and whatnot on the TP to then fund what I actually want. It makes it all a lot less meaningful for me.. an entirely subjective and preferential thing that does have a large impact on people’s gaming.

I would challenge you to find one game on the market where people who play the in game TP/AH aren’t the richest players in the game.

<snip>

The problem boils down to one of people. The business minded and smarter players will always have more money than the less so players. This will not change no matter what you do. People want to be equal in an unequal world, and it just won’t happen.

You’re completely right. People who play the in-game markets in other games are generally going to be the richest folks. But in many other games, that money isn’t going to buy them the shiniest of shinies (character/account bound armor/weapon drops from raids, dungeons, etc.) This is where GW2 goes wrong in many people’s opinion and why posts like these keep cropping up. There is nothing wrong with flipping. But there is something wrong when it outstrips the rewards of playing the game’s content imho. There needs to be more balance: let the TP players earn their oodles of money but conversely let people who have zero interest in TP Wars 2 take on challenging content to earn shinies that can’t be bought. Do that and I’d feel safe saying that I’d guarantee you’d hear much, much less whinging about flippers. Instead you’d hear whinging about those elitist raiders/groupers. :P

Yes! It was the dark mine and sandstorm that did me in, I think because there’s so little visual reference regarding how fast/where we’re moving since we can’t see much. I’ve never had this problem with GW2 before (only with a couple FPS games) and ended up logging off about halfway through a sandstorm as I got too uncomfortable.

Er yeah.. death shroud.. done. For warriors, the heal skill that heals you everytime you get hit. Mist form for eles… etc.

It’s not impossible alone at all. :P

Dry Tops: Expanding or New Zones?

Dry Top was tiny in GW1 as well. I imagine this won’t be the only zone we get.

Things done right in this release.

Whilst I appreciate the atmosphere of the sandstorm.. I found myself becoming physically ill/naseous feeling when running around in it.. the way I get sometimes with FPS games sometimes. I know I’d appreciate a bit shorter of a sandstorm. :P

I too am really happy to hear they chose to use a live orchestra. It’s great to see real musicians being used and supported rather than going digital. And what we heard in the new video sounds great. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest.

I’d never bothered to do the math for the full cost of one armor piece…. just grimmaced and got irritated during making daily damask. That is insane and honestly outrageous. :/

As long as you are ok with ANet nerfing your drop rate for things you want, and changing how often you can, I don’t see an issue either.

Ah but he wouldn’t be. Check out his posts regarding anything economy and his flipping ways. :P

Ah victim blaming is fun!… you know, instead of feeling bad for the guy, saying that sucks, next time use mobile authentication (if you have a phone that can do that) and move on. No, we gotta all assume all the bad things he must have done to bring this upon himself!

Inflation

Short and sweet:
If you think inflation is a major issue in Guild Wars 2, you should do more research on MMO economies and general economics.

And here is one of the largest problems: do you really think the majority of the GW2 population actually has an interest in economics and would find this fun?

I’d think (and of course I could be wrong) most people in the game want a fun game to play and earn items through playing content (better, shinier items through challenging content), not this random money grind that’s been set up.
