To everything or just the npcs?
of course I put no thought into balance, but I don’t mind if it also affects players. It would add mind-games because it would involve “will the enemy walk this direction or is it too obvious a place for a trap?”
Thanks JazzyTurrets for posting those comments. There is one important thing about playing turret engi that you did not discuss and that is rotations. I would like to see your take on this or your teammates. For a turret engi, choosing where to be is very important due to a lack of mobility and the long cooldown on turrets.
I spent a lot of time with him on rotations since they are extremely important. I’m sure he can elaborate but here is the general philosophy we go by:
-His build is turret decap and so he can decap any pt in ~5-15 seconds or less against any of the best players in the game. You can see our vods against Abjured, AG, and Radioactive to see he had no problem doing that.
-His build excels in 1v1 and 2v2 scenarios, so whenever possible we play a 3pt game, pressuring all 3 points.
-Due to lack of good mobility turreteers will bleed people out—we have a no stomp philosophy where we NEVER stomp anyone except in rare 1% niche circumstances.
-The last rule is that we never leave anyone at a point doing nothing. If we win mid, we never leave anyone there unless we know someone is coming around back to cap it or something like that. If the other team wants to out-number themselves for ~25 seconds running to mid and capping it we will use that number advantage elsewhere.
So that being said if Jazz is home and caps it uncontested, he immediately runs to the enemy home since side pts are always easiest to decap. It is (usually) far better to be the aggressor. If jazz just sits home and the other team sends 1 to jazz then we are not at an advantage since Jazz can potentially get decapped, lose his point, or basically stalemate since even if he kills the attacker we are hardly any better off than had he not come. So we always have jazz on them move, he is always trying to be one step ahead since the OTHER team is at a huge disadvantage if Jazz is rushing what they own.
Side-note: His build was specifically meant to counter the bruiser/boon meta and so he can 1v1 any cele ele, engie, etc if he gets his rotations and kiting correct.
Sometimes the best move is not to move though, and this is what Jazz is really good at. For example, since Jazz is our strongest 1v1 player we send him to far at the start and he almost always will win it, or at least full cap the other player there, and it forces the other team to make 2 choices, either 2v1 Jazz or let him free cap it. They almost always try and 2v1 him, and Jazz can live ~60-120 seconds 2v1 against bruisers. That usually gives us enough time to clear mid and support far.
Either he knows that due to his lack of mobility, it’s better for him to stay on a point and die 1v2 than try to leave, and so many times I will tell Jazz he can’t get support but we have advantage elsewhere and that he needs to do all he can to sustain before dying by himself.
Now when I said sometimes not moving is better than moving it’s when jazz has capped far and we just killed 1-2 people. In that case they will respawn and usually try to jump him, We either choose to let Jazz 1v1/2 or will send 1 to help him.
But yeah, while people say that turreteers do not rotate or rotate well, Jazz is a prime counter-example where his entire role focuses on smart rotations and strong, fast decaps.
We are not concerned with camping someone on a point since if the other team caps it, we can decap it whenever we choose unless they stack numbers on it to defend it… and we’re pretty good about not going into those unnecessary battles when the other 2 points are easier to penetrate.

100% agree with OP.
This was their chance and now this new game-mode is going to be the new Courtyard Deathmatch—AKA another map no one gives two kittenns about since there’s no reason to care for it or spec specifically for it.
It won’t even appear in tournament rotations, and if it does it will be irrelevant since the primary focus is conquest.
For being the new game-mode comign with the expansion I am extremely disappointed. Whenever GW1 had an expansion it came with a brand new game-mode, it’s own unique, PRESTIGIOUS reward system, tournament series, special unique titles that were IMPOSSIBLE to max, and the competitive community played them to death.
Basically since stronghold is getting no other support, it’s just another map with a slightly different objective to win.
gg
A map with guild lord and treb?
Did they make this map for me?
Yeah, I can upload them tonight (takes forever to upload but it should be ready by morning haha)
Those games were not nearly as interesting _
I think the score was 500-200 and then 500-0.
As someone who almost never records his matches I ended up recording this set and the set vs radioactive.
I thought I’d share the vods from our perspective in case anyone was curious since I found it really interesting to see different team dynamics, communication, and actually found it interesting to watch them at intervals to see what AG was communicating to each other compared to what we were trying to do.
Full disclosure, Foefire is one of my strongest maps because I play the 350 game, meaning we basically play for 1pt and a neut and lord rush. I know other teams know I like to do this and so I try and mind-game the lord play if they’re being overly defensive, but foefire vs AG was a good game of mind-games. The end was really interesting because I waited it out in stealth after being banner ressed and so when they wiped the rest of the team in base they thought it was safe and stopped the CC on lord’s body leaving me room to 30% to 0 in a about a second.
I know these vods are less relevant to anyone not in the matches, but if you’re interested in how teams communicate these are good to watch. Examples of good and bad communication in both.
My personal opinion, HBT lacked numbers communication and missed calls on when people peeled. Our strengths were that we were always calm and and no one blamed anyone mid-match. The team was also good about following out team tactics and thinking on their own when I am too focused in a fight to call a good strat.
AG was a lot better at calling numbers and movement, and made good efforts of zoning out HBT’s only really burst threat, but I think they over called some things like sending too many back to Lord the first time (although it was a safe, good call since they couldn’t risk a lord death at that moment) and some conflicting communication on what someone needs to do like on Kylo.

I remember participating in beta for EOTM and the feedback that the community put forth was extremely helpful.
Any possibility of a beta for Stronghold? I know a lot of great players eager to put in the time to help locate glitches so the release is as smooth as possible.
If I am missing info on this then my apologies but just thought I’d promote the idea since I haven’t heard anything on the possibility.
I wait for the day when guardian spirit weapons will be buffed for the sake of buffing unused builds and we will have a new AI meta.
I miss them being impervious to damage huehuehue
Tournament Tokens based on placement in tiered tournaments that can be exchanged for -exclusive- pvp prizes.
The dream…
Had a bad match around ~2pm PST on Saturday. The room was Mistpedia Tournament Arena C and even though I had a 5-man team we got abjured in less than 10 seconds and they wrecked us. The game instantly went to the next match and we got 500-0’d by them.
We Q’d up again today and got them AGAIN for ESL
nerf please.
Jazz > Turrets > MM > bearbow > Lux
As much as I enjoy playing the best 5-10 teams in the game during tournaments I was wondering if there could be more incentive for teams to participate.
As it stands right now hardly anyone signs up for ESL weeklies and other weekly tournaments because the same 2-3 teams win all of the prizes.
Could there perhaps be in-game funding (materials to make legendaries, gold or gems) for more places past the first round. It would really incentivize more teams to compete and grow the community.
I won’t even bother recommending a daily automated tournament system that automatically gives you the reward after completion because apparently gw1 features are too complex for gw2 #observemoderip
I know people hate turret engies but if you want to see some of the non-streamed games from a team-perspective I decided to upload a bunch in one uberlong video.

There’s plenty of salty people around the pvp community—unless you’re on a mission of justice it’s not worth your time to respond. If you feel so inclined then /report them as well but I wouldn’t waste time filing a ticket. If you report them for verbal abuse then the mod will look at the chat log surrounding the incident to deem if actions need be taken.

((As a point of clarification: we do not necessarily compete in every single tournament and so when you see gaps in our win-history it’s usually because we flat out could not get a full roster to compete due to IRL obligations and not because we lost bad—we have only never placed well in maybe 1 or 2 minor tournaments).
We’re a tight-knit group of players who have been in the guild and server since release. We have a long history of PvP accomplishments and while we’re typically the underdogs it’s because we’re very busy with school and always play non-meta comps. We refuse to conform to the meta and choose to play our own style.
That being said we’re probably the most relaxed group of PvP players you will find in the competitive scene. We never rage but are always playing to win and improve our technique.
While we are looking for 2-3 more players to fill our roster, we have a group of about 6 people on the team. Not everyone can make every tournament, and not everyone will play in every tournament. Usually we have 2-4 people who can’t make any given tournament and so we are always looking for subs, so if you’re willing to start at the bottom of our roster, we give players opportunities to enter the competitive scene on an organized team. Preferably looking for players -not- already active in the tournament scene. We want some fresh players open to learning to compete in the unique style that we bring to tournaments.
What We Are Looking For:
-Skype + TS + Mic
-Able to practice at least 2 nights a week (We practice Th/F/S/Su/Mo) usually 5pm PST- 9pm PST
-Recording software (if you are committed to joining us we will eventually have you DL something like OBS (which is free) and have you record and upload practice games to YT so we can critique mechanics and rotations).
-Some experience in PvP is necessary, but so long as you are committed to learning, improving and communicating you don’t need to try-out as a pvp pro. We actually want players who are willing to learn our style as opposed to bringing in pre-conceived notions of rotations and strats.
-Also we are looking for people willing to start at the bottom and work their way up. Since we have a somewhat large roster (6 people atm but 1 is unable to compete for the next month) it means we already have 5 people who have earned their spot. While they can’t make every tournament they will be given preferred spots for now. However, sometimes due to IRL commitments not all players can be present during the first rounds of tournaments and so if you’re willing to participate in the first round or two then bow out when they appear it makes you a stronger applicant for the team. Eventually, if you improve, you’ll make core and then when we hold tryouts for other spots, if you have an IRL commitment but want to compete when you’re available then newer tryouts will sub in and bow out for you later.

I`m a lame turret engi.
I join unranked arena with 5 vs 5 solo players.
The preparation for the game starts. We have 1 minute.
During that time I check my regional and language settings because I want to add a language to the keyboard. I mess the things bad and I delete the whole keyboard list. I press with the mouse the icon of the game and try to move …… nothing happens. I can only activate skills with mouse.
The game starts. Kyhlo map. I can`t move.
My team is doing great and is equal to the enemy team.
I know that I should help.
Press 5. Jump a few meters. Wait for the CD.
The goal was to reach the close cap and load the turrets.

We lost 400 – 500.imagining this is hilarious
couldn’t you run by right and left clicking at the same time?
tomes → skill pts → gold
If you complain about that then theoretically you should complain about every single other non-pure-gold reward from these and advocate for a strictly gold-related track (which I’d probably support as well).
Getting tomes is virtually the same as every other non-gold reward in that it takes time and effort to convert it to your preferred currency.
1) anyone acting like that in yolo is obviously not a good player to begin with—even the good players understand that people will be ‘bad’ and it’s not worth their time and effort being a kitten to everyone who messes up or runs something wonky.
So to answer your question more directly: Why? I’ve never seen a game with pvp that did not have toxicity? Some people troll, others want to find ‘someone’ to blame for the loss, others are genuinely ahead with respect to understanding the format but are new to the point that they don’t understand that those actions are done in vain since there’s no real point to engaging in that sort of negative behavior.
2) They’re not. Those people probably aren’t even on the LB for -any- games played there. Not that this LB indicates much of anything, but there’s NO reason for -anyone- to do unranked unless you like sky ham, spirit watch, and CY. There’s absolutely no reason to NOT do ranked unless you’re blatantly screwing around—in which case they wouldn’t be trash-talking random team-mates.
Special guest Donna
Thanks.
The PvP scene in China is also very small. The competitive one is even smaller. KongZhong offered 64 slots for the WTS qualifiers. Significantly less than 50% were used.
maybe because htey are gold farming in PvE and selling it to rich american kids.
That makes perfect sense: farm gold on Chinese servers which are completely independent of the NA/EU servers (which actually are connected).
I realize you’re being facetious but I thought I’d point out the misconception.
That being said China also has an anti-gaming addiction law which literally prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from playing more than 3 hours per day.
Ok so maybe they are selling it to rich Chinese kids then. You know, since the kids can’t farm enough of their own gold due to 3 hr limit.
Touche’
Although I must admit I do LOVE their VIP system. Almost everyone over there does it and I wish they’d do it over here since I actually really enjoyed the benefits. While some people would scream and whine “PAY TO PLAY” it really isn’t and the benefits are just conveniences and really don’t give you (much) of an edge over other people.

Heck, they still don’t even have a leaderboard….
What is this??
Oh nice they -finally- added one.
Although to suggest that they could be competitive is a huge misconception unless they actually have competition at the EU/NA level consistently. Otherwise it will take far too long for their scene to develop and they’ll always be 5 steps behind.
(edited by Lux.7169)
Let’s not judge them right now, it might be a sad final but let’s not forget at PAX the EU runners up went and won.
That’s sort of misrepresenting the facts.
It could be argued that CC should have been listed as the winners since they won 2-0 and the rules LITERALLY said best of 3 for final match.
If you want to get specific then TP was DQ’d before they even entered since they knowingly violated the rules with participants. Although ill admit that while situation was unfortunate, especially since Xeph got the ‘clear’ to participate prior to the tournament only to find out that no exceptions would be made for him.
That being said, any times the CN teams come to practice on NA they get trashed. Also, I have an account on telecom district II in China and nothing has changed.
Heck, they still don’t even have a leaderboard….
oh for the test season I solo, duo, trio, quad, and 5Q’d constantly just to get games in with whoever on my friends list was available, if at all. Players ranging from my wife to pve-friends and people who play pvp pretty frequently. There was no one comp. Regardless, still lost to the same ~30 players, but of course we’d have done better with what I plan on running for tournaments but I was just casual Q hardcore grinding for armor.
The problem with a lot of ‘players’ is really compatibility and ego issues. A common self-defense mechanism is to blame team-mates for losses and a lot of players have these egos they’re trying to maintain—a street cred of sorts—and will typically burn bridges when losing by saying other players are kittens.
Sure you can play fantasy e-sports and say “IF THESE PLAYERS MESH THEY WOULD BE AMAZING” but in reality something as basic as philosophical differences in perspectives on splits could just completely destroy the synergy between the players.
Playing as consistently as I have since launch I’ve just adapted to that and found people I thoroughly enjoy being friends with, and then have a friends list of people I tolerate (and who tolerate me and my preferred style/philosophy) and just play to enjoy the game. Outside of this I’m at a law school that literally cuts the bottom 15% of the class and so any time I do have to enjoy the game won’t be with people who are screaming and blaming me or my friends for losses.
Actually, now that I think about it, 3 of the people I do the big tourneys with aren’t even rank 80 in pvp, and we still have performed extremely well in the ones we participated in (ToL, ToL2, ToG). I think above forcing ‘top players’ to abandon their friends to form some ultra-pug/team, people should find others whom they truly enjoy playing with and being around. For example, you could theoretically put me with a full group of rank 80’s or even triple 80’s (code for hella high rank), and that team would perform worse than me with my friends. Proof? In major tournaments we’ve beaten many full r80 teams and have seen a lot of success, even with what people consider sub-par and non-meta comps and strategies.
One major problem being that if you put me on a team that tries to micro-manage what I do, then we won’t perform nearly as well as we would if I had free reign. Logic puzzles are sort of my thing, and really that’s why Jazz and I get along so well (he’s in law school too, lol), because he realizes that, first of all, I can make the better decision than anyone else could give me if they were trying to micro, and secondly, that I will purposely leave and let us lose a fight for the greater good of victory. Other teams mid-game would ask me “WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE MID-FIGHT” and there’s plenty of reasons why that would be a superior choice, even if it resulted in losing that particular fight for the team and I won’t bore people with those nuanced situations, but the point is, I don’t play to have someone micro-manage me, regardless of how technically/mechanically good they are at the game.
Actually, thinking back (and anyone who has fought SoF before could probably vouch for this), we are probably the worst players mechanically in tournaments (meaning as a team, overall, we will not interrupt you as quickly, or punish your positioning as swiftly as other top players would), but we still manage to win games vs amazing players because we have that trust in each other to make the smart play and we rotate well.
I’m pretty sure we’ve never won a 4v4 or a 3v3 in any quarterfinal, semi-final, or finals match, but we’ve won many tournament games.
(edited by Lux.7169)
You should be getting constant matches against Lux, Drunknpozzum and other top 25 leaderboard players, those guys are considered ‘always online, grinding’…. Well the system should make you stop letting them win and getting so far ahead in the leaderboards so you collect points and get ahead and they lose points and fall behind.
Oh trust me we get them (and others) a lot. I think the other day we played Backpacks group ~7-8 times in a row during prime-time (and lost each time).
About 95% of my losses in team Q (from this past ladder test season) came from the same ~30 players.
(edited by Lux.7169)
it sucks but there are a couple work-arounds, especially if you understand how it works sometimes.
Sometimes its pure lag on their end.
Other times it occurs when someone is cc’d mid-air and they get downed soon after.
In either case their body is in a different place than it appears and there are several ways to locate the ‘real’ body. Any form of AOE that impacts where their ‘hidden’ body is will keep them from healing up and you can slowly kill them that way. A thief’s best friend is cluster bomb w/ fire sigils since the fire blast will literally proc on their EXACT location and you can proceed to tell your team-mates to cleave that location.
Basically any tells that would signify someone is stealthed in an area will locate the de-synced downed body.
For GLORY!!!
…oh wait…
…rip
What if someone on my team, in my party, DCs for longer than the grace period, but I win the game 4v5 regardless?
Full loss for ladder standing.
Someone on the team mentioned that, I think. The theory is if we allowed this then people would have someone D/C in the beginning just to guarantee that the other party members can’t lose ladder standing.
But according to your theory, dishonor will deter this sort of behavior in and of itself, so then why implement a double punishment? Dishonor on a team-mate + a loss even though you won 4v5?
It also seems more like you are punishing good teams from stomping other teams (since any leavers on the other side invalidates wins).
I usually play a 3-point strategy to assert dominance on the map for a faster snowball effect. The result vs bad teams is typically a 50-0 start and ends up in a lot of the other team leaving the game more often than a traditional 2-pt strategy. So I feel like I will have to completely reconsider my approach into letting teams that I would traditionally stomp into thinking they have a chance by letting them hold a 1-cap all game.
Sure you claim that dishonor will incentivize them to stay but my issue is that I believe dishonor goes away while the game is closed (I could be wrong) so it’s pretty easy to rage quit a game, go watch anime or do homework and return X hours later for more; or if you vs an actual team multiple times they could rotate who leaves to spread the dishonor among them, etc.
Bottom line is, I don’t feel like it’s right that teams should have to base their strategies around “how can we win, but not stomp them to the point where one of them is tempted to leaving the game…?”
That’s my personal opinion, and I figured that’s why you’re here: to gauge other perspectives that perhaps were not represented during your development theory-crafting.
If you DC and do not reconnect within the grace period, yes.
This is to discourage groups from leaving the match early to invalidate a win for the other team.
I really hope that you aren’t saying that the winning team does not get a win if someone on the losing team deserts. That makes no sense.
I’m hoping the actual implementation is like this:
1. If you win the game and played until the end, you get a win
2. If you win the game, and deserted, you get nothing
3. If you lose the game and had a deserter, the remaining team members do not get a loss or negative mmr
4. If you lose the game and WERE the deserter, you get a loss and negative MMR. Ideally, I’d even make it so they get a double loss.It doesn’t need to be a net sum zero of wins and losses.
+1
So it’s officially closed and any progress now is just for fun?
TY for the clarification : )
This is erroneous because I did not disconnect at all in the last hour and yet the system posted that I had 12 losses. The reality is I had 3 wins and 1 loss. How did it come to 12 losses? Prior to this, my win/loss ratio was closer to 60%.
I don’t understand why the system is so punitive, even to those who play fair and honest.
The 11 losses unexplained losses are from the 11 desertions you had over the course of the ladder. They are not desertions from the last hour.
Do we need to actually play a game to let the desertion losses take effect before the ladder season ends to receive credit/be eligible for the test-season rewards?
I planned on not playing this week but I’ll go home and hop on if I need to.
Try to look at it from the eyes of a beginner guys.
The NPCs award points, and give you a buff. Who wouldn’t want that?
It takes a higher level of understanding of the both the map and conquest mechanics to get that securing mid is important.
How would you guys suggest we go about teaching this to players?
chief and svanir with 10k power + quickness for the first 2 minutes of the match….they’re gonna learn it the hard way, but i assure you this is definately gonna work.

Pretty sure 10k power means you’d get 1-2 shot, but I could be wrong.

when leaderboards will stop being about botting ranked
I don’t know anyone whose botted on the NA LB.
If you’re suggesting that I botted then feel free to whisper: Saekim, Jazz Tomassetti, Slaughter Melon, X Ekelon X, Hero Of Death, Thee Faux, or Amyzzzz
These were players I voice commed with often either duo, trio, quad or 5q’d with about 50+ times each to get my wins.
when did i say you botted? or do you feel guilty?
Why would I feel guilty?
And secondly, I never said that you accused me of botting.
Although, I must admit, I’d be pretty kitten proud of a bot with a 70%+ win rate on a non-meta thief.
When i was still playing on NA i did see people bot because i play from EU so usually i played during so called “dead hours”…. i see same on EU during those hours~
You know it is a bot when character always runs same route, does exactly same spell rotation and doesn’t even bother defending themself if you attack them during that travel along their “route”.
Just because you didn’t bot doesn’t mean other didn’t.
Even if we assume that players didn’t bot it is undeniable that only thing that gets rewarded right now is farming and not actually being good at pvp/having good tactics etc. Should pvp really be about farming?
Also, stop taking it so personal /facepalm
Really? Because I played during all hours of over the break and didn’t once see anyone kittenembled a bot—except for one person whom I whispered and they competently replied back.
What’s the point of botting in pvp? You get more gold more quickly in PvE by botting and if you’re doing it for the armor then that’s pretty lackluster and the llamas are a joke with how many are already out there #4 llamas on this account and 2 on my alt… so I don’t even see a point to botting pvp as opposed to something like CoF.
Yup, this is a grind-board for people who want armor or a llama, pretty much. While in and of itself it’s not an ideal reward system I think there needs to be more things like this that reward grinding in pvp, and there also needs to be a better leaderboard reflective of the top players and rewarding them for their High MMR’s and continued activity without having to grind to maintain a top position.
Grinding PvP isn’t a bad thing and should come with its own decent rewards, but there also needs to be incentive to perform better and play semi-actively (without having to grind X games per day).
Basically re-implement the old LB with permanent decay and give higher rewards for players winning higher MMR matches.
Of course all of these things have been suggested and ignored for quite a while, but yes, I am not disagreeing with you: the current LB is a grind-fest that represents very little. Although I still feel like it should be generously rewarded, there needs to be -better- rewards for the better players.
That being said, I haven’t pvp’d the past 2-3 days and won’t unless my top5 is in jeopardy before noon tomorrow (since unlike most people I actually like the glow to the armor). I had fun playing gw2 a lot over the Christmas break but now I am back in the law school grind. They have their own leaderboards _

My bet is when the Tuesday update goes live, which is typically 12 noon PST.
I’d put some cushion room in now since there’s about ~28 hours left for people to grind into the next tier.
I don’t care if I didn’t get anything, I barely made it in the top 1000 because I just recently started to play PvP again.
But do the first 25 people seriously just get 1 piece? That would make the complete set a nice prestige item for pvp players… but still.
top 5 get 2 pieces and top 6-20 get 1 piece.
A rather ridiculous amount seeing as the 2nd place team in ToG only got two pieces for an actual tournament with qualifiers
Yep, for the most part all rewards in pvp are pretty abysmal.

All of this + better rewards for higher MMR victories.
