OP, you are talking about two totally different play styles.
Dungeons are instanced and available only for a maximum of 5 players.
Dungeons require a “time” commitment usually lasting an hour or more. These five players need to strategize and coordinate their efforts in order to complete the dungeon and gain the reward. In most cases Dungeon players have min/maxed their gear/skills/traits for the dungeon, which is why you see LF specific profession to complete their team.
Open world PvE on the other hand can handle any number of players, in any gear/skill/trait line and don’t necessarily have to “coordinate” their skills in order to complete the area. Communication/strategy is not required. Also time commitment is not required as most hearts/events/skill challenges can be completed in a matter of minutes. You can choose to team up or not, all up to each individual.
I prefer Open world because it is “fun” for me. It’s not stressful, no one is “depending” on me not to screw up and I can go from area to area at my leisure. I have fun assisting others, running from area to area, and mostly the fact that I can leave whenever I want.
Dungeon groups, in my experience, is more stressful, as players expect to complete the dungeon for the reward and failure is “not an option” as it’s a waste of an hour or so.
It’s been bugged on Gandara too. Don’t know why Anet can’t just disable the event until they can figure out a permanent fix.
I think I like the economy. Although I have very little gold (only play open world PvE). I like that Anet provides multiple options for you to purchase items. You can purchase items with Gems, Gold, Karma and Laurels as well as crafting items. It’s also nice that the option exists for those to convert gems into gold.
Since I do not have a lot of gold, I am happy I can purchase items via Karma using those Jugs I get from doing dailies.
I had a “main” in GW1 and only used alts for specialty stuff. But in GW2 I haven’t found a main character, so all 8 of mine were always within 10 levels of each other. I’d play one profession for roughly 5-10 levels, then switch to another.
There really isn’t one profession I like better than the others.
I have to disagree with the OP, I WANT downscaled content to be easier. That’s the whole point of being more experienced at my profession. If I’m in a starter area, I avoid true to level players (unless they are downed or dead or want to party up) so as not to interfere with their progression.
I deliberately go to lower levels when doing my dailies. Because I want them done quickly. If I want a challenge, then I stick to the higher level content.
I agree with the OP. There is open world PvE and then there are PvE dungeons. They are two totally different play styles.
Open world PvE still encourages community, but you are not tied to specific player groups and everyone can play their own way for as long as they desire (5 minutes to 5 hours).
Dungeons-require a time commitment (usually at least an hour) of 5 people who coordinate their efforts as a team in order to complete the dungeon.
Nothing is wrong with either game style. Anet has chosen to have both styles in their game.
It’s only an “issue” because Anet chose to merge them at the end of the Personal and Living stories.
I agree with you. I have friends on both UE and NA servers.
I prefer GW2 over GW1 in regards to combat (love dodging and jumping) and that we don’t need to party up in open world PvE.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful in GW2 (except the higher level areas…they are gray and dreary and I tend to not spend too much time in them).
I prefer GW1 armors over GW2 in fact there are only like three armors I like in the entire game. Which makes it kind of difficult to outfit my eight characters, but I can live with it.
The quests/hearts are the same basically in both games although I prefer the dialog in GW2.
Both games have dailies.
I love the DE’s
WvW – although I suck at it – I find it quite fun. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to be there very often as armor repair can be quite costly for me.
Jumping puzzles – Stress me out completely, but I do enjoy the ones that are not timed and don’t have too many enemy that knock me to my death.
Dungeons are just not my thing as most groups are looking for skilled players and specific builds so they can grind them out quickly. (not that I blame them)
As you can tell I’m a casual player. I play for fun more than skill. I’m not competitive in my games, so leisure is my style and although there are things I would like improved, I do enjoy it and I hope to be playing it for many years to come.
If a guild “kicks” you, then obviously they were not a good match for you. Continue to test out other guilds until you find one that you like, and like you.
I’d purchase the armors I like best for my characters, as well as provide each with the best weapons possible. I’d purchase all the mini pets possible. I’m sure that would cost me a minimum of a million gold.
Unfortunately each of my level 80 characters are only sitting at 8 gold and do not have any of the appropriate level max gear or armor. Oh well…I can dream.
I have received one exotic drop and it was a level 78 I believe.
I am on the low end of the drop rate scale (meaning I rarely get good drops). My husband and I can run through an area together (doesn’t matter which of the 8 professions we’re using that day) but 98% of the time he gets more drops and better quality (multiple greens and rares).
In large group events (chest spawning bosses) I’m just happy to even get a chest!
I become laggy once there are more than 10 players in the event area, so sometimes I don’t receive the chest nor any type of participation reward. (this is why I do not WvW).
Drop rates seem to be all over the place. Some rarely receive good drops, while others always get multiple rares/exotics. Could be due to RNG, player skill (DPS), computer speed, or a combination. Who knows?
I still enjoy the game, and luckily hubby passes to me any item he has no use for….so eventually I end up getting what I need. :-)
I do not “dislike” townclothes. However, I don’t put them on very often.
IF I were planning to spend a lot of time just “hanging out” in town, then I would switch to them (I do own the witches outfit for halloween).
Unless I’m specifically hanging out for a while in a city, I have no need to “switch” to towns clothes.
Normally I’m only in a city for a short time. I don’t see any purpose to automatically switch the clothes when you enter/exit a city as some people prefer to show off their armor as opposed to their townsclothes.
(sigh) Unpopular post time.
During GW2’s development, I used to look at those Tequatl and Shatterer event videos and the furthest thing from my mind as I watched their footage was the question of how many times I could farm them a day for rare drops. And yet, now this seems to be the only question on the minds of most players.
I’m sure the community that just wants to be showered in rare and exotic drops will strongly disagree with this, but I really wish Arenanet would just completely remove chest rewards from these open-world boss events altogether. Instead, make the events do something that gives players in the area a reason to beat them, like locking down a portion of the map until they’re defeated, or awarding victors with a buff only applicable to that zone. And then players who are actually adventuring in these zones will have a reason to band together and beat these bosses, no loot-carrot-on-a-stick required.
I would love to see these world events entertaining only a fraction of the crowds they attract now (who are there for all the wrong reasons). I choose quality over quantity every time. This whole loot pinata thing is just ruining the entire sense of adventure this game was supposed to have. I’ll even suggest that it’s introducing elements that are counter to the philosophy of the game. Those bosses are like open-world resources, and we’re now practically competing over them as we fight to see who can out-camp whom, with the loser ending up cursing on an overflow map. And not because we care about the boss or the event, but because we want that loot drop.
Wasn’t this supposed to be the game that moved away from that kind of unpleasant competition?
I’m sorry OP, but I have to disagree with you. Anet allows you to play the game your way. IF you choose to PvE via the hearts plus follow all of the chain events. Then you can be in “awe” when monsters like the shatterer appears.
But there are those that choose to level their characters via WvW or Dungeons then try to get additioanl “loot” by farming each “chest spawning” monster.
The problem with your suggestion is that now you are depriving PvE only people their ability to receive decent drops.
this bug is still occurring. Only copy is created at my target location. I receive no “weapon” in my hands so I have to use the copy.
1.) what made you choose and stay on the server you’re on?(other than friends)
The answer is Friends, would change servers if a few of my friends changed.
2.) what will it take for the wvw players to get you into wvw?
First things first, I need a level 80 character and the build to utilize in wvw. Then a WvW person would need to “teach me the ropes”. I’m not anti WvW, I’m just not preprared for it yet.
3.) wvw benefits your dungeon runs, do you not agree that helping us get the buffs you benefit from is the right thing to do?
Answer: N/A, I don’t run dungeons.
4.)is it the repair bill that scares you out?(i farm maybe 2 hours a week and that’s a 7g profit each week i’m sorry but i can’t see that as valid. to each their own maybe)
Answer: I don’t “farm” at this time and therefore do not have gold “to spare” (I have only made 7g in 6 months of playing open world PvE)
5.) why would a risen priestess of milandru be impressed with your Legendary?
Answer: I have no legendary weapon (characters are only 60’s & 70’s)
6.) to my GOM bros specifically, some of the PvE guilds on our server are upwards of 300+(and active), can you grasp how much of a difference just 1/10 of your guild members would make if they were active in wvw daily?
Answer N/A
7.) World Vs. World is one of(probably the) best way for your guild to not only get recognition, but respect. if your guild is influential enough here…you get the point.
Something i’ve realized, that the fact of the matter is, PvE heavy servers will stay that way until WvW’s incentives surpass PvE’s. That or thief gets nerfed hardcore.
However, if open world pvp were introduced…the tune might change quickly.
k, gripe over.
Answer: no real question here, but I agree “guilds” really only get recognition inWvW as that is the only aspect of group play that is currently ranked.
I’m “playing the game wrong” in regards to earning gold. I am a level 70 and have earned a whopping 7 gold. :-(
I have never entered a dungeon, I do not “farm nor grind” any areas. The only items I “buy” from merchants are salvage kits and gathering tools. I have never bought nor sold any items on the trading post.
I only play the open world PvE. I have leveled my character via completing area maps and storyline.
If you wish to earn gold do not play the game my way. :-)
Apparently I’m with Nalora (The RNG hellocrappydropagain club). L
I really enjoy open world PvE. Unfortunately for me, this means I cannot make any money and thus depend on my “drops” to equip my characters.
If there are weapons/armor that I want my characters to have that they did not get via loot drops, then I will have no choice but to grind my way through dungeons to make the money needed to buy them.
IF the keys were sold by a Laurel vendor, then eventually I might spend my laurels on them.
Since items from the chest are account bound, so I can’t even sell or give away unwanted items. I don’t see me opening very many chests.
Right now my goal is to get my 8 characters to level 80 via open world PvE.
I do not play every day. But when I do play:
I do my daily. Usually takes 30-60 minutes depending on time of day and how many people are doing events.
I then spend the next 3 -4 hours leveling one of my characters apprx 5 levels via mapping an area and storyline.
Then sign out.
It’s safe to say that it is a walk in the park at the moment.
I know, i know… it isn’t supposed to be super hard either, and behemoth & friends shouldn’t be wipefests. But should you be able to go afk and auto-attack the boss until it eventually goes down?
Right now, they’re practically “rare piñatas”.
People check their timer. “Oh, Shatterer i 5 minutes!”. He arrives, and they stand in the same position auto-attacking for a few mins, get their reward, and moves on.In my opinion. Meta-bosses in every zone should have their difficulity upped to a state where they’re not “piñatas” anymore. Their abilites should be able to kill us if we’re not paying attention. The fights should require some sort of “skill”. We should feel satisfied after downing a meta-boss. Not just for the loot, but for the challenge.
After all… they are a part of the “end-game”…
What do you think?
I’m curious in regards to the shatterer….are you playing a full geared out level 80 or are you playing on its level without the max gear?
Also, how many players are participating?
A poor level 50 character that’s meandering around the area with a a friend or two may not find the shatterer so “easy” to defeat.
My character has completed all of the campaigns plus the HOM, so there is absolutely no need to go back to GW1.
I actually prefer GW2 to GW1
However, there are a signicant number of my guildmates that went back to GW1 because they preferred it to GW2.
I’m a casual player, if I log in and get my daily…yay! If I don’t shrug…so what?
I play the game when I want to play it. If I miss a day, week, or a month, I’m okay with that. Yes, it will take me a heck of a lot longer than those that play daily for me to reach my goals but I’m okay with that.
I’m sorry OP that you are disappointed in the endgame. When you are satisfied that you have done everything that you want to do in the game, then stop playing, but keep coming back to see if anything “new” has been added that you wish to do.
That’s the great thing about this game, since there is no subscription fee, you can stop and start as often as you like and not miss out on anything.
I play the game for the open world PvE, I don’t care for dungeons nor PvP.
I am content to play the game that I want to play. I’ll never be rich, and probably won’t get all the armor and weapons that I like the best as that would take lots of gold that I don’t have, but that’s okay because I am enjoying the journey.
Charr Female Guardian
Human Female Warrior
Human Female Engineer
Sylvari Female Ranger
Norn Female Thief
Sylvari Female Elementalist
Asura Female Mesmer
Human Female Necromancer
I am amazed that by playing a few hours a day you managed to get to level 80 in a week. You must be a very skilled player.
I consider a “few” hours to be 2-4 hours. I can only manage 5 levels in 4-5 hours via personal story and completing an area map.
No, I have not purchased any black lion keys nor do I ever plan to.
Q: “Does GW2 have the staying power as-is?”
A: I have no idea. GW2 will evolve over time just as GW1 did. I cannot foretell the future. All I can say is what I like to do, which is very different from what others like to do.
I plan to leisurely get 8 characters (which includes each profession and at least one of each race) through the storyline and map completion. I’m not sure what I will do once that has been completed as I have no interest in dungeons, although I’m sure I’ll get around to doing each of them at least once. PvP is not my thing and WvW is okay every once in a while.
So I guess, if Anet continues to bring new things to the world for me to do and complete, then I will continue to play the game. If they focus on Dungeons, PvP and WvW, then once I no longer have anything I want to do…..I will move on.
Since I’m a casual player, I don’t foresee me “losing interest” in the game anytime this year.
Here is an example of MY issue with RNG. Party of 4, playing together for a few hours.
Participant #1, wow! this is awesome! I netted 6 rares, 10 greens!
Patricipant #2 wow! this is terrible! I only netted 1 green!
Particpant #3 I did okay with 1 rare and 4 greens
Particpant #4 I did pretty well with 3 rare and 2 greens
Most people expect a certain amount of reward for their effort and when they don’t receive it, they feel like they were taken advantage.
If they feel they do not receive enough of a reward to justify their participation, then they stop playing the game.
If this game was subscription based, would you be willing to pay to play this game monthly? Why or why not?
Do you think GW2 would have flopped if it was launched as a subscription game?
No, I would not play the game if it were subscription based.
Why? Because I am a “casual player”. I play games for entertainment purposes and as leisure activities.
This bug is still occurring, only the greatsword copy is conjured. I receive no new set of skills unless I use the copy.
Gandara Server. Heart still bugged, unable to complete. Very annoying. If it’s something that has been bugged for so many months, why not just remove the heart?
I can’t participate in your poll yet because I don’t have a “main” or favorite yet. :-)
I created all eight professions utilizing at least one of each race so that I would have an idea of what I liked and disliked by the time they reached level 80.
They are all between level 50 & 60 and I still don’t have a “favorite” because each race/profession has likes and dislikes. For example: I enjoy playing the Asura race, but don’t like how they look in armor.
For armor looks, I prefer the human race.
I like the female charr but most armors cover up the unique fur colors and designs I have applied to them and don’t like how they run on all fours.
It may just be me, but my big Norn just can’t seem to do jumping puzzles as easily as my little Asura
I would say that only a small percentage of players actually participate in forums. If they have time to play the game, they will be playing the game. If they run into a problem or are researching for hints and such, then most will go to the forums for additional information or resources.
I guess I am in the minority here. I PREFER lower levels to be easier.
If I am a level 50 going to a level 10-15 area to pursue a specific agenda, ie dynamic events to get my dailies quickly then I do NOT want to be challenged. I want to quickly move through the area and kill things quickly. If I wanted a challenge I would stay in my level area or go one higher. A friend and I took our level 50’s to a level 40 area. We got trounced, not sure why, as when we were level 40’s this did not happen, but we see a group of 3 including a veteran. We engage them, and four additional monsters popped up right next to us. Needless to say we wasted a few silver on waypointing /repairs. If THIS is what Anet wants, for us to waste our silver on waypointing and repairs, then they can keep this game because that’s not MY idea of fun, especially since the drops we received were literally “sell as junk” to the Merchant. There was no way to recoup our losses.Unfortunately, this means that you’ll ruin the experience for others in the zone, who are there, not to have an easy time of dailies, but are trying to level up characters. I’m convinced this is one of the reasons that this change was made.
I’ve been there on an alt, trying to level up, doing a dynamic event and I’m getting bronzes, or even no reward at all, because a bunch of 80s are down there trying to get their easy events. Great for them, not so great for me. I target something and it’s dead. Bronze reward.
So yeah, you may prefer it one way, but you know, it’s not better for those who are actually supposed to be in those areas and can’t go to higher areas, because they’re in their appropriate level zones.
I have rarely experienced what you are referring to. I’ve been on low level characters participating in an appropriate level dynamic event with other people that have been downleveled. Because of the number of people involved the number of enemy is increased and therefore participation Golds are the norm.
I HAVE experienced the following: I came in at the end of an event and only get a couple shots in and the event is completed. I would then receive nothing or if I’m lucky a bronze for that event. Again, I expect this to happen.
As a downleveled character, I do not expect to one or two shot an enemy and it die.
However, I do expect it to die within a few minutes and I expect to receive limited damage. Again this is me against one monster. If I choose to aggro 5 monsters (not that I do) then it SHOULD be more challenging and take longer to kill them and I expect to take significant damage to my armor.
I guess I am in the minority here. I PREFER lower levels to be easier.
If I am a level 50 going to a level 10-15 area to pursue a specific agenda, ie dynamic events to get my dailies quickly then I do NOT want to be challenged. I don’t believe it should be random. It would mean less teaming up. Because player A needs veterans and player B needs variety of kills to achieve their daily. They may be forced to play in different areas which defeats the purpose of playing with your friends.
10 pages…that’s just…unbelievable.
I don’t mind the dailies. I did them before…I’ll continue to do so.
I’m not sure I understand the Combo Killing one. Couldn’t figure this one out. Sometimes it counted but mostly it didn’t. Then the dailies changed, so we didn’t get a chance to work on that one long. I don’t particularly care for this one because sometimes I play alone. As long as it can be accomplished without being in an actual party it should be alright as events usually have multiple participation.
Crafting – I planned on crafting eventually, so will have to start that sooner rather than later. So not really a big deal.
The rest that they’ve had thus far are just fine. Underwater is not my favorite pasttime, but I complete hearts that deal with underwater, so definitely doable.
Dodge was interesting, as I had to choose the enemy that had the easiest “tells”.
I’ve always enjoyed the Events, so glad that one is still included.
Reviving allies is one of my favorite things to do, just wish it wouldn’t take so long.
So overall, I’m a happy camper when it comes to dailies.
I don’t like most of the armor in the game.
I would prefer that we choose the selection of the armor. This way even though a thousand people are wearing the same armor…depending on their choices each can have a totally different look. example:
When you go to the vendor to purchase an armor you can select:
Head piece: choose from the following: hood or Mask
Shoulder: choose from the following: plain or decorated (example spikes) left side or decorated right side
Chest: choose from the following: Vest or short sleeve or long sleeve or coat
Legs: Choose from the following lengths: short, knee length or ankle length (this goes for pants or skirts)
boots: Choose from the following: ankle high, knee high, thigh high.
Anet could limit these selections to armor that is obtained from a Vendor. Armor that is obtained via loot drops do not get a selection..you get what is dropped
Yes, I try to make sure I complete it via normal game play leveling my characters.
Gandara server
I work on my Daily Events achievements. However, there are times when I complete an event and receive my Gold/Silver/Bronze reward yet it does not register in my Daily Events Achievement tab. This will occur roughly once every 2-3 days Why?
I love the open world of GW2 and wish I never had to step foot in a dungeon. (know that I will have to eventually to grind for gold.)
I play a couple hours at a time a 3-5 days a week
I understand what the OP is talking about. I have eight level 50 characters and each only have earned 3 gold. I have not done a single dungeon, I have not bought nor sold a single item on the TP. I have not bought any weapon or armor from a vendor yet as I take what is dropped. I love playing the open world (hearts wish they were repeatable, story, DE), yet I know I will be required to grind out dungeons for months to make enough gold to outfit each with the armor/weapons/jewelry I want them to have after they reach level 80.

I don’t want a single player environment. I want a Multiplayer environment as well and I’m referring to the holiday events anyway where large numbers of people are going to participate. I just feel it would be more “epic” and feel more multiplayer if large numbers of people could participate together instead of limiting it to only 5 people on a map.
Instead of a 5 man party team “dungeon like” instance, why not create events to happen in the open PvE world. The toymaker visited each main city on a different day and hundreds of people stood around for hours trying to get into groups to start the event. Instead why not wreak havoc on every map at the same time? I really enjoyed opening the presents that were placed throughout the open world, and feel that should be expanded upon to include a special dynamic event chain for each map. This would require less “looking for group”, and encourage high level characters to revisit lower areas.
It’s all about how you play the game and what you want from the game. I enjoy this game, but I’m the casual player. I consider the game one of several different entertainment options. I level a character (I have eight of them) 5 levels and then I’m done for that day. I may play every day, or I may only play once in a week.
This is very different compared to my partner who plays roughly 16 hours a day. He is a completionist and will continue to play until he reaches his goal…whether it’s farming a specific amount of coin, receiving100% map completion, or maxing an acheivement/title.
I feel no hurry to get anything done. I’ll get done what I want to get done….eventually.
:-)
I do NOT miss the trinity, nor do I want it back.
I do not find the game boring. I enjoy the fact that a bunch of people, no matter their profession or playstyle can work together to complete an event.
I understand, that some people want to feel “needed” and the trinity gameplay feeds into that. But the trinity of other games is no more “skillful” than this game.
I really enjoy GW2 moreso than GW1. I agree that it is more of a solo game in that you don’t “have” to group to achieve success. However, this is a different type of MMO, and that you do what you want to do as an individual or as a guild. The carrot on a stick or grind for better gear MMOs require you to do basically, the same thing over and over: Get a team together – go raid – or dungeon until you farm what you need.
I believe GW2 is more social, in that there are more things you can do as a group together…whether it is 5 or 50. You can Map clear an area as a guild, I’ve seen entire guilds run from jumping puzzle to jumping puzzle in an area. I’ve seen guilds racing to gathering nodes and even playing hide and seek in an area. A guild can be as silly or as serious as you make it.
I’ve seen quite a few guilds “lose members” because the guild is adept at a specific type of MMO. Unfortunately for them, GW2 is not typical and therefore guild leaders (if they enjoy GW2) will need to adapt if they wish to succeed.
lack of trinity is what I like the best of this game.
