If you play a guardian, a warrior or a thief you already have cheaper equipment so you can afford less drops btw.

Let’s say there’s two starving people. One hasn’t eaten in six days and the other hasn’t eaten in one week. I give them both a package of poptarts each containing two poptarts. I then decide that the man who hasn’t eaten in a week deserves three poptarts, so I take one from the man who hasn’t eaten in six days and give it to the man who hasn’t eaten in seven days. Would you agree that I made the right decision in taking food from one starving man and giving it to someone else?

Zojja’s Warfists costs ~60 gold to make (according to GW2Spidy) and Zojja’s Wristguards cost ~66 gold to make. I don’t see why the 6 gold difference means that we should make the people who are trying to make Zojja’s Warfists harder.

Guardian Vs. Ranger...What to main?

Guardian. So far it’s balanced for all gamemodes, or at the very least ANet thinks it is. Ranger is surrounded by a lot of negativity, for a couple of reasons. You are very reliant on the Pet AI, a lot of people run a “Bearbow” setup, and it doesn’t really teach you to play the way other classes do. A Ranger can grab a Longbow and a tanky pet (typically a bear) and never have to dodge. A Thief or Elementalist will learn to dodge by 80 unless they just karma train their way to 80.

The Guardian absolutely sucks at and against ranged attacks.

Their longest range weapon is only 900 and as they have no real soft CC or movement skills the only thing easier to kite than a Guardian is an actual kite!

Scepter’s main attack is 1200 range, and it’s #3 skill immobolizes. Not sure what you mean by “longest range” but 900 isn’kitten

While I agree with the posters that Ele and even Engie would have an advantage, we are long overdue for a feature that allows Eles and Engies the ability to weapon swap out of combat for convenience sake.

Haven’t played enough engineer to have an opinion, but absolutely not for elementalist.

The elementalist has 20 weapon skills available in combat (4 groups of 5). They can mix and match single-handed weapons (3 and 2 of the 5), but not the 4 groupings.

Other professions have only 10 weapon skills available (2 groups of 5). They too can mix and match single-handed weapons. But they can also mix and match the 2 groupings.

That’s the price elementalists pay for having 2x as many weapon skills – they can’t mix and match the groupings. Allowing them to swap weapons removes that disadvantage, and in fact would give them a huge advantage. If they could swap just 2 weapons, they’d have 8 groups of 5 skills that they could mix and match. If other professions could swap 4 weapons, they’d have just 4 groups of 5 skills that they could mix and match.

They can already swap weapons out of combat by simply unequiping and reequiping weapons, and an out of combat change is what Iason Evan suggested.

How about we give Elementalists and Engineers the ability to swap weapons in combat first? Yes, I know, Elementalists can swap between elements and Engineers can use kits but I’d rather switch from, say a pistol + shield Engineer to a rifle; or a dagger + scepter Elementalist to a staff in mid combat without having to either, A) run away to get out of combat or, B ) Kill everything first before I can switch out my equipped weapon.

I know this will more than likely never happen but one can always hope.

Maybe we could just allow them two weapon sets? Everyone else gets four weapon sets, and Engi/Ele’s get 2.

Nope. We got six skills, ~four maps, and no new classes? Now compare that to what Guild Wars: Factions added to the game: 200+ skills, all of Cantha, and two classes. I won’t consider the Living Story an expansion’s worth of content until it rivals that.
EDIT: Or compare it to Eye of the North, which added 100+ skills, four regions, 18 dungeons, 124 quests, and 41 armor sets.

It will still drop. Even for other armor classes. Yes, the other armor classes also use cloth, but less then the light ones do. So, the do get cloth, but less than the light professions. It makes sense to me….

For my heavy ascended gloves, I need 1200 silk and 500 mithril. I need more light armor than I do heavy armor, and yet they’re going to give me more heavy armor than light armor. How does that make sense? At all? It would be fine if they were just buffing silk drops for you guys, but instead they’re nerfing mine too.

You miss an important point. If there’ll be more elementalist/necro farming and getting their armor, for example, silk scraps will not remain at 2silvers, because more people will be able to farm it.
Also, I think Anet play the game like you and me, and they’ve already said that this new way to loot items will be very little noticeable, if not at all.

If it’s not noticeable it won’t have any noticeable effect on the price of silk. It’s one or the other, not both.

The way the dev put it, it sounds more likely the usable loot drop rates will be increased slightly, while the unusable loot drops rates will remain the same. So you should be getting more of gear for your character, but not losing out on salvagable gear. In the end more loot for all.

I’ve decided to be a little more constructive in my feedback.
Currently, I am at level 80 and working on my set of heavy Ascended armor. For this I need more Cloth than Metal. In fact, throughout my entire experience with the game I’ve had an abundance of metal and leather. Looking at the trading post it would appear that I’m not the only one, because Leather costs very little to purchase, as does Metal. Cloth however is one of the highest demanded items in the game, and price reflects that. As a heavy armored class, this change would indicate that if armor is affected I will receive more heavy armor. This means I will be receiving more Metal and less Cloth (unless they add to the loot tables instead of adjusting them). This creates an in-balance because some classes will be getting more valuable materials, while other classes will be getting more valuable materials. I propose a few suggestions to help with this:
1. Letting us toggle Profession Loot.
This would allow me to get balanced drops, while also allowing me to turn it on when I’m leveling and would like to keep my items close to my level.
2. Make it only affect weapons.
When weapons are salvaged they either give wood or metal, something that is quite abundant. On top of that, every class has access to enough weapons that they can acquire both metal and wood.
3. Make it only affect sub 80s.
When leveling, I think that having Profession Loot will be worth it. Once you are level 80 though, I feel like it’s not going to help, and actually hinder the acquisition of crafting materials.

Morsus.5106

Hi everyone,

The article about profession system only presented the idea behind this system and we generally don’t give precise details about these systems unless these details are needed to understand the idea. In this case we can’t share details but we want to reassure players that they’re not going to see changes in loot so visible that some components are going to “rain” or they’ll stop seeing loot variety. It’s more complex than that.

The adjustments to the loot system are fairly subtle and the goals are that, after a certain time, your characters will effectively have more components you can use. So it may take some time for you to see a difference, or not, but it’s not going to feel like a very visible change each time you loot a mob. We want players, in particular new ones or those creating alts, to more often be able to use the items they loot directly or get something that is relevant to their profession. It does not mean that you’ll get less varied loot overall. We’ll keep monitoring the changes to kitten its affects.

Thanks for your early feedback!

Does this mean that it will affect level 80s?
EDIT: I hate to derail your post, but I’d really like an answer on this. The initial blog was very vague, and I’d like some clarification. Thanks for responding to our feedback

Stop complaining, learn to adapt. Personally I like the changes. If farming gold is all the game gives to you perhaps you should move on.

The problem is not that I will no longer be able to farm gold, but the inequality in farming materials that this change will make. You will need an alt of each armor weight to farm materials.

‘a higher chance will mean all my loot will be geared to my profession’.

Let’s look at the Engineer. Say just 50% are tuned to something you could use. Now the drop rates are 33/33/33 split, meaning everyone has a fair chance at Silk, Leather and Mithril. After this the poor Engineer will be getting a split like 50/25/25. That’s an 8% nerf to silk and mithril, which is worth a lot more than silk. Now, let’s look at Necromancer, Elementalist, and Mesmer. If they have a 25/50/25 split, 17% more of their drops will be light armor, making it more profitable for farming. Small adjustments like this can make a big difference.

So a way to make a precursor is NOT gonna be something cheap like 20g or only take a week to make. My guess like I’ve said before would be something a long the lines of 500g and/or2 months or so to make. That would put it more in line with the other components.

I’m okay with that. Reading all of the stories of players throwing millions of gold into the forge and never getting a precursor have driven me away from ever using the forge.

Morsus.5106

How so?

EDIT: Except you are trying to get Dawn as a necromancer for example, then yes, it will be harder.

Precursors are named exotics.

So what?
Ok, time for examples.
Lets say you are playing a guardian, the chances of getting a light/medium named exotic armor will decrease, but get a heavy named armor will increase.
In the same scenario, get a Dawn or a Zap for example, as a guardian, will increase , while getting a Lover or Tooth of Frosfang will decrease.

So they aren’t making precursors harder to get, they are just making it different.

There are people who exist that only have one toon, you know.

If you only have on character why are you trying to get a precursor you can’t use?

Does it make a difference which character gathers the materials? I mean they all go into the same bank.

But, if you are saying you want to salvage, say silk, on your Warrior/Guardian, I can understand that. I was speaking, though, to the result of many people suddenly playing Light Armor characters (and salvaging their Profession-specific drops). If they do so, and generate a lot of Silk (much like all the Wood being generated because of Foxfire Essences), would not the cost of Silk drop?

[All that follows is Morsus.5106’s personal speculation and should be taken as such]
It would, but only temporarily. There’ll be a flood of it, but it would have to be pretty big and sudden to do anything long term. As the price lowers, less people will be farming it. If 10 million scraps were suddenly introduced a lot of the demand would be met and the price would go down for awhile, but since it won’t hit all at once (over a few minutes at best) people will adjust back to what they were playing before the patch hit. It’ll go down a few copper, but nothing long term, at least from my perspective.

We’d rather that leveling players found things that felt like an immediate and useful upgrade or gave them a look at a new weapon and a chance to expand their skill set, and this seems like a good way of doing that.”

Seems to me ANet says different.

Peace.

Find me where it says that level 80 players aren’t affected by these changes.
EDIT:
Taken from the article:

Additionally BOTH need 18 damask for the 6 insignia.
So it’s 54 damask vs 43 damask in total, roughly 20% more costs

According to the wiki the original numbers included the cost of the insignia. As well, you only need three bolts of Damask for the insignia, not six.

This is a good change people… it will allow people to SPECIFICALLY TARGET CLOTH as a drop now.

Being able to SPECIFICALLY TARGET CLOTH will cause overall supply to INCREASE.

An overall INCREASE in supply will result in LOWER PRICES.

LOWER PRICES means that even though the number of silk scraps you get on your Guardian is less, you are now able to afford to BUY LOTS MORE SILK than before (or play on an ALT).

I don’t think it is possible to explain this any more clearly.

You may continue complaining after this point, just be aware that it only makes you look silly.

That also means that light armor classes (Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer) will be more profitable to farm. The problem is the inequality in drops.

They won’t get mega paid, if anything the price of cloth will drop to be inline with leather and mithril (as cloth users will get their own cloth now and not have to buy). Look at the disparity in costs with crafting cloth ascended versus leather or plate, its silly high. I hope this change will balance it.

This argumentation ignores the current ascended recipes:

  • Crafting Light Armor need mostly clothes and a bit leather.
  • Crafting Medium Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit leather.
  • Crafting Heavy Armor needs mostly clothes and a bit steel.

Everyone needs mostly clothes to build his armor, but only cloth-weares get it.

Yes but it is the quantities that matter, the non clothies need far less cloth. I have crafted all 3 types of ascended and the difference in cost is huge.

Light Armor needs 36 damask and Heavy Armor needs 25 damask. According to GW2spidy it costs 60 gold for heavy Zojja’s Warfists vs 67 gold for light Zojja’s Wristguards. While that is a significant cost increase, I don’t think it means heavy armor wearers need a nerf in the amount of silk they get. I stand by the idea it should be optional.

Actually, there are more ways fairly reliable ways to get cloth (as much as RNG can be considered “reliable”) Much of my cloth I gathered was not due to slavaging. Bags, salvagable cloth item (i.e worn garment, rag, etc.) map completion actually gives quite a bit, and karma can be used to get cloth

Eitherway, as stated before, we don’t know if this applies to level 80, or to armor drops. The blog specifially talks about weapons, and leveling. Of course we can infer that it will effect armor, but until we get a clear answer, or see it in action, everything is a knee jerk reaction and pure speculation.

Please enlighten me on the karma way of getting cloth… btw, I have 7 lvl 80s… and still think its a horrible idea. Conceptually, it shows their lack of knowledge on the game and its truly concerning.

Buy cloth items with karma, throw them in mystic forge, salvage results. Boring and tedious.

yup. Its is boring and tedious, but generates a decent amount of cloth.I found crab grabbing gloves to be the best for linen. They are cheap.

Yes I buy those as well, but not so often. I still have millions of karma but doing the mystic forge method is so boring I want to cry. I wish we could just salvage the initial item and not have to convert it. I know it would hurt prices but they need to be hurt, just too expensive now.

Can white items bought from vendors be put in the forge?
