Do the winners get to pick which skin they get or are those randomized too?

no. prizes are selected randomly and the skin mailed directly to the winners

what I want to know is if they will announce the winners. not like anyone would know most of the people listed, but it would be nice to know that people won them, instead of just assume it happened.

oh, another idea!
be on the char that learned the recipe
search the TP for “recipe: superior rune of the mad king”
mouse-over each of the 3 recipes. It has some info about it, including if you’ve already learned it or not. Just find the one that says “Recipe learned” or w/e it says, in red I believe.

For this, I went with bags that are permanently available. If you wanted cheapest, just tell people to run fractals and say 20-slot bags are free.

How does the tin foil raffle work?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Mystic.5934

I think he’s saying that the people who clicked so many bags were using tools to help them click.

But, just buying bags and then selling everything proved to be almost break even, which means that players who had money and wanted to open a lot of bags, could have opened as many as they wanted.

currently, ToT bags return 4s30c when you sell everything. They cost 5s3c, so that’s a 14.5% loss. not a complete loss, but still a loss.

You get about 1 foil wrapper every ~47 ToT bags.
If 137,944,233 ToT bags have dropped, then let’s say only 100 million were opened.
That would generate 2.1 million foil wrappers.
Then there’s more from personal ToT bags and the gem store.
So the raffle is probably somewhere around 2.5 million tickets.
If you have 1 ticket in the raffle, you have about a 1 in 2,500 chance of winning a skin (1000 × 1 / 2500000 = 0.0004)
That guy on reddit claims to have opened 1 million bags (which would cost ~60,000g, and he could sell everything back to the TP for ~51,000g), which would make about 21,300 foil wrappers. He will get about 8 or 9 skins: (1000 × 21300 / 2500000 = 8.52)

It’s not an exploit to work hard, save gold, then choose when and where you want to spend it.

these recipes have been in the game a while. introduced either last year or the year before… I forget which.
There is a problem with recipes in general, where if you learn a leatherworker recipe on your armorsmith, your leatherworker can’t use it. I’ve suggested account-wide recipe unlocks, but so far they haven’t implemented it. This particular recipe is annoying: it has 3 different versions, each by a different discipline. Zaxares (and my) guess would be that you learned the leatherworker recipe on your armorsmith (or similar, so it is not useable).
Do you happen to remember what discipline the recipe said?
what you could do is this: on the character that you learned the recipe on, talk to a leatherworker master and become a leatherworker. This will work even if you already have 2 disciplines on that character, as it will replace one of your current disciplines. It should be free to get this new discipline, but will cost you 40s to switch back to your original. anyways, become a leatherworker, then check if superior rune of the mad king is listed in it’s production tab. You won’t be able to craft it until level 400, but you will be able to see if it is there. Then replace leatherworker with armorsmith, check if it’s in the production tab. Then replace leatherworker with tailor, check if it’s in the production tab. Then switch back to your original discipline.
This won’t necessarily help you, but it will at least confirm for you that you are not crazy. Also, you might consider leveling that craft just to make the rune, because the alternative is to buy another recipe, which might be more expensive than leveling the discipline. Just keep in mind that, once the craft is leveled, it will cost 40s to switch to it.

there were 2 of a few of them. 9, to be specific. You are right, though, in a random situation, you would see some with 1, some with 2, some with 5, etc. What this tells me is that there are far more salvageable materials available in the pool than I observed.
For example, if you picked 20 random numbers from 1 to 100, you would expect 1, maybe 2 of 18ish different numbers. you wouldn’t expect 5 of one number. But if you picked 100 numbers, then you would expect to see 3, maybe 4 of some numbers, and only 80 or so different numbers. As your sample size approaches the pool size, then you start to see more multiples.

What collections are worth doing?

When the collections came out, I noticed I had several of the black lion collections partly done. most noticeable, lovestruck. I had never unlocked any of those, yet I was at 12/16 (I assume from PvP unlocks?). So I spent ~400g to unlock the remaining 4 and got 7 claim tickets worth ~70g each.
The Halloween collections is not horrible. 5 items, each costs ~150g, you get 5 tickets. If you use those tickets and save the skins for after the price increases, you could break even.
All the other BL collections are not even close to being cost efficient.

I did these calculations a while ago. Figured I’d update the prices to more-recent gem prices and share them:
Original: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/Bag-slots/first#post3876352

This is a summary of how much various storage options cost per space.
Using these inconsistent prices: 15g50s buys 100 gems, 1g buys a 15-slot bag, 2.5g buys a 18-slot bag, 11.5g buys a 20-slot bag.

bank expansion = 3g10s/space (6 × 15g50s / 30)
guild bank 50 = 12s/space ((1g + 2,500 × 20c) / 50)
guild bank 150 = 30s67c/sapce ((1g + 22,500 × 20c) / 150)
guild bank 250 = 42s40c/space ((1g + 52,500 × 20c) / 250)
bag expansion with a 15-slot bag = 4g20s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 1g) / 15)
bag expansion with a 18-slot bag = 3g58s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 2g50s) / 18)
bag expansion with a 20-slot bag = 3g68s/space ((4 × 15g50s + 11g50s) / 20)
new character with 4×15-slot bags = 1g60s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 1g) / 80)
new character with 4×18-slot bags = 1g46s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 2g50s) / 92)
new character with 4×20-slot bags = 1g70s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 4 × 11g50s) / 100)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×15-slot bags = 2g54s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 1g) / 125)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×18-slot bags = 2g24s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 2g50s) / 146)
new character + 3 bag expansions with 7×20-slot bags = 2g44s/space ((8 × 15g50s + 3 × 4 × 15g50s + 7 × 11g50s) / 160)
collection expander: 1 collection expander is as expensive as 40 spaces in a bank or 295 spaces in a guild bank 250 or 85 [of the 92] spaces in an alt with 4×18-slot bags. (if it saves you from storing that many stacks of collections in those other places, it’s worth it)

I would just like to point this out:
Orichalcum Mining Pick: 4s for 100 charges. each use is 4c
Molten Alliance Mining Pick: 1000 gems + 0c per use. uses to recoup initial price: ~390,000
Watchwork Mining Pick: 1000 gems + 0c per use + ~48c bonus per use. uses to recoup initial price: ~29,800

Basic Salvage Kit: 88c for 25 charges. each use is 3.52c
CFSoM: 800 gems + 3c per use. uses required to recoup initial price: ~2,400,000

Why does the CFSoM even cost anything per use? If it cost 0 per use, that ‘uses required’ would drop to ~350,000, which is in line with the perma gathering tools.

The SFSoM is a different order of magnitude. If it were free per use, the uses required to recoup initial price would be ~12,600, which is far too low to be comparable. (excluding that watchwork pick, which I expect Anet would remove if they could)

It took a while.
I didn’t get Mawdrey II right away, took a couple days, so I’m sure someone else got a full stack before me, but I’m the one that’s first to report what I got from a full stack (from what I noticed), so I claim ‘first’.
I got all these for the low-low price of 12,500 Piles of Bloodstone Dust (50 stacks) over the last ~10 weeks
First screenshot is the proof, rest are the loot. I wanted to have 1 screen with everything, but it didn’t fit. I salvaged all the greens with CFSoM and included the salvaged materials in the screenshots (there were 241). omnomnomnom

Summary of the good stuff:
2 lesser vision crystals
2 lodestones
3 less-than-lodestone rare mats
2 powerful blood
pretty much 1 of every salvageable material (a few of them; 2)
13 rares

The TP contract in 1st image is mine, not from Mawdrey. helpful for storing stuff while opening them.
Those 3 items in bottom left of 2nd image: Pristine Gold Ring lvl 29 (master), Orrian Master Scholar Certificate lvl 75 (master), Queen’s Medal lvl 22 (fine). They just seemed special; like they werent just normal junk items. Also, not salvageable. I’ll probably destroy them after checking if they do anything.
The items in the 3rd image are all the rares. All are generic “Cleric’s Banded Coat of Strength” types. I sold 2 for like 70s and salvaged the rest
I sold all the junk items for 1g22c

Hope you had an interesting time!

Mystic.5934

I see…well Crystal Lodestone’s price increase is understandable, since it is The Crossing skin and 100 of it is needed.

I suspected it, but I didn’t understand how simply requiring Superior Sigil of the Night in the recipes for The Crossing/The Mad Moon/Arachnophobia could lead to such huge spike.

Then I looked closer and realized the amount of sigil needed is not 1, but 20…now I totally get it >_>

also: I crafted about 1000 superior sigils of night. just because I had so many candy corn from opening bags and knew it would also appreciate after halloween. I bought about 3 stacks of glacial lodestones (already had 1 in collections) They don’t exactly have a high supply… just low demand which made them cheap before.

I’ve thought about doing a weekly lottery for a while. I had a lot of the same thoughts you are having – how to do it, how to be fair, how to appear fair, how to appear trustworthy, the hassle of receiving dozens/hundreds of mail and recording who has sent you how much. I thought it would be fun, but realized the details would make it a nightmare. Then you get to other problems, such as people who will call shenanigans despite everything and try to spread rumors of your corruptness, despite your obvious good intentions.
imo, it’s a fun idea, but wouldn’t be fun to coordinate.
there are guilds that do raffles/lotteries. usually only amongst themselves.
I believe you wouldn’t be able to conduct this on these forums. the rules say it’s not a grey market, and this isn’t exactly discussing parts of the game.

seriously, if you are having problems running from halloween mobs, just use more skills that help you get away, instead of skills that help you kill. fun bonus is that those skills help you fight instead of spending half the battle immobilized in the corner. Sometimes I’ll run with as much as 4 stun breaks (which have other uses as well), and there will still be times I want more.

You sometimes run with 4 stun breaks, while wanting more, around PvE mobs and you don’t see the issue here?

they are weak. they need something to boast about. Their thing is cc. I didn’t say it was an issue, just that breaking every kb when there are 10 mummies around you does deplete heavy counter-cc builds. In which case I use my last one, blink, and move on.

the other major issue is exactness. If you buy 1g with gems, it costs you 9 gems and you get 1g. if you buy 10g with gems, it costs 87 gems and you get 10g. It was so much more sophisticated before: if you sold off 9 gems, you would get 1g8s37c (the exact price of those 9 gems)
I can tell there is a general ‘buy more at a time and get a better deal’ (for amounts more than ~50 gems), but it should still be exact instead of rounded.

Rare skins should be expensive. That’s what makes them rare. You wouldn’t want it if it was cheap.
On the same hand, rare skins [in GW2] should also be BiS. Most games, the rare stuff isn’t always the best stuff. I’m not suggesting The Crossing should be exotic. I’m suggesting they do what they did with the Triforge Pendant – add a recipe to make it ascended. except that triforge -> ascended triforge recipe is a joke. unless you’re planning to sell it, there is no reason you would not do it. upgrading any exotic to ascended should require ascended mats. How about this: any exotic + Vision Crystal + 5 glob of dark matter + (2 deldrimor dowel if a weapon or 5 deldrimor ingots if heavy armor or 5 elonian leather if medium armor or 5 bolt of damask if light armor) = account-bound ascended version of that exotic
OP’s other option is to craft an ascended staff and use a T charge to put The Cross skin on it. which would be about the same price (a bit more expensive) as what I just suggested, but he wouldn’t have the exotic The Crossing as well.

My guess is they are worried that adding the jeweler 500 would cause too much price increase in silver, gold, and platinum prices. T2-T5 leather and cloth were really low before ascended, then they space-rocketed. silver, gold, platinum are already nicely priced, so adding jeweler 500 would make them higher than they should be.
Personally, I bet everyone who would craft ascended trinkets already has ascended trinkets, so there wouldn’t be huge demand for the jeweler 500.
it would be nice if they went a different route: salvage ascended rings into crystalline ore.

maize balm turns AMBIENT creatures into ToT bags (those white bunnies and frogs and birds you see in PvE world). more specifically: into 1-hit kill candy corn elementals which drop ToT bags. And each use of maize balm has 3 uses of the skill, each skill is an aoe that will transform 3 ambient creatures, I believe. So 1 maize balm = 9 ToT bags. Just go to an area with high ambient concentration. With ToT bags being worth 5s, that puts maize balm at 38s (including TP fees).

Unless it’s 10c or lower, I’m still better off with the Mystic Salvage Kits

It is doubtful that they will use the Mystic Salvage Kit as a reference for the new cost value. More likely the Master Salvage Kit as that one can be purchased with coin (Mystic Kit cost changes based on gold to gem conversion/free stones from daily/chests).

Mystic kit currently costs about 9s82c per salvage. People only mention the 10c price because they do so few salvages that they get enough mystic forge stones from dailies to keep it up. At that rate, it would take years to use a SFSoM enough where you even match its initial cost, nevermind try to recoup losses (500gemsx18g/100gems=90g/1s=9000 salvages=108 MF stones). On the other hand, some people go through the equivalent of 1 mystic kit per day (I used to). Those are the people that actually want/need/would use/would get a working SFSoM. That’s what they should be priced off of.
You wouldn’t see the price of CFSoM based off the free crude kit you get from personal story level 15. You wouldn’t see the price of SFSoM based off the limited gift for doing dailies or ach.
A good price for SFSoM would be 60c per use (1.44c less than master). This would put it in line with the CFSoM, and definitely worth getting.
At 60c per use, it would take 625,000 salvages to recoup the cost of buying it. at 250 salvages/day, that’s 6.8 years.
At 50c per use, it would take 78,671 salvages to recoup the cost of buying it. at 250 salvages/day, that’s 10.5 months. 25 salvages/day would be 8.6 years.

unid dyes used to be the best… now it’s probably T6 mats.
Unless you really need them, I would suggest saving them for something that’s harder to get.
personally, I prefer to spend my laurels on wvw ranks

relevant story:
I main a mesmer. celestial gear, phantasm/shatter build.
in 1v1 fights, I win probably a little more than 50% of the time.
it was a slow day in WvW
I solo captured Hooligan’s Quarry camp (no biggie – I’ve done that before)
I used the supply to build an alpha golem
walked it over to Wildcreek Run tower, got out, killed gate guards, got back in, destroyed gate, walked it inside, got out, ran up to champ room, killed guards, killed champ, captured.
total time: ~15 min.
I would say that nearly every profession is capable of doing this. Some builds are not able to (full berserker probably isn’t). Player skill and luck is probably more important than profession. The trick to doing it is being left alone

I would like to be able to kill few-small groups alone or survive and have a good escape abilities. … I would like to almost 100% take out any solo roamers.

kill + escape abilities + 100% success in 1v1. I hate stealth thieves, but that’s what I’ll recommend. I recommend them for one reason: easy to escape. Personally, encounters with stealth thieves for me go like this: they show up, hit me for half my health, I hit back, they stealth, I regain to full, they hit me for half my health, I hit back, they stealth, I regain to full, they run away. They fit your desires because stealth thieves almost always will a) win the 1v1 fight or b) run away. It’s uncommon that they actually die in a fight. It fits because you get to pick your fights. you want a 100% win? just don’t fight the battles you would lose. I show I’m not an easy target and they scurry away.
you can probably take a camp with a stealth thief. you’re not going to be taking any towers.

I am done with trying to contribute to that wiki.
first, I couldn’t get to the data-entry page
then I couldn’t log in
then it wouldn’t let me add all the items the wiki doesn’t include (the text field was not large enough): legendary essence of luck, armored scale, vicious fang, elaborate totem, vicious claw, Recipe: Major Rune of the Mad king (armorsmith), Recipe: Major Rune of the Mad King (leatherworker), Recipe: Major Rune of the Mad King (tailor), Recipe: major Sigil of the Night (weaponsmith), Recipe: Major Sigil of the Night (Artificer), Recipe: Major Sigil of the Night (Huntsman)
now it won’t accept the contribute (“Modifying Trick-or-Treat Bag/research failed.”)

If anyone wants it there, the data is above and you can add it yourself.

well… it’s not letting me add my data to the wiki. I click ‘add data’ and it brings up a new window, sits there for a minute, then “502 – Web server received an invalid response while acting as a gateway or proxy server.”
awesome.
I’ll try again tomorrow.

just a bit of sinking in:
I now have 2,184 charges of mad king finisher and 2,533 charges of scarecrow finisher. are they considered ‘limited’ at that point?
11 stacks of exotic luck = 558,700 luck. That should take me from 270% to 289%.
