Exactly. Each game had a different continent (Tyria, Cantha, Elona) and could be played as a stand alone game. Eye of the North is considered an expansion because it requires you to have completed one of those three games in order to play it.

The difference between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 is very similar to how Assassin’s Creed names it’s games. Basically games roped around the same character/time period are named similarly. This is why there was Assassin’s Creed, then 3 Assassin’s Creed 2 games, and so on. Guild Wars 1 games took place within a few years of each other, Guild Wars 2 is 250 years later (roughly).

Sarcasm aside, I will concede there is some value in that discussion. Most of the Elder Dragon minions are mindless pawns given some basic “programming” and then left to their own devices. You can see this much in Orr, where farmers and undead animals carry on the behaviors they experienced in life when these things can neither benefit themselves or Zhaitan in death until a player character approaches. The Champions and unique minions (Eyes, mouths, etc) are a different matter. These are entities the Dragons have invested significant time and attention toward, and it stands to reason that their own degree of personal autonomy is held rigidly in check. They are too valuable to be left to their own devices, both as tools and as potential targets. I argue that because of this value the Elder Dragons are always present within them, observing their actions in real time, ready to dominate their minds if the situation necessitates this. In that light they, while able to voice unique dialogue, can be equally mindless when directly controlled.

I actually disagree on the portion in the bottom. I highly doubt that Zhaitan is constantly directly monitoring the thoughts and actions of his champions. While they may possess some/most of their past memory and possibly even their soul, they seem to have been utterly bent to his will. Basically, they keep all of the aspects of their life that do not conflict with Zhaitan’s will, and everything else (everything inbetween) is filled with a passion or desire to do the dragon’s bidding. They are basically brainwashed into thinking that Zhaitan’s will is the best for everything.

Except that your whole theory is debunked if you are playing an engineer and you go to the control panels on the breach maker. It states in the text dialogue that Scarlet’s real target all along was a dragon. There’s no real other way to interpret that.

Actually the text states that the drill was meant to disrupt the leylines beneath Tyria, nothing more. Scarlet may indeed have had designs on a dragon, but to what end is mere speculation at this point. Nothing yet has been confirmed.

No, he is correct. If you take an engineer profession in and look at the controls it will tell you directly that her aim was the dragon afterall. This dialogue is different from the dialogue that other professions get, much like a Priory member will get certain dialogues that a Vigil or Whispers member won’t. I suggest you take an engi in if you have the opportunity.

Under the lore tab on the GW2 wiki there are links to articles about the races, cultures, in-game lore articles, and under the Six Human Gods tab there are links to all of the well known religions in the game. This will give you a lot of information, but obviously not everything. I highly recommend that however time consuming it may be, you take the opportunity to play through all 3 Guild Wars games and the expansion including all of the post-game content they added. You will gain a lot from learning first hand like we did, although this may not always be an option.

ArenaNet’s ultimate troll against Konig:

Make Sylvari Dragon Minions

Watch ensuing “I told you so!” ’s

The day they break their own recent lore is the day I view the GWverse as dead, and will delete all characters (not even bothering selling, just downright delete) and uninstall both games forever. They’re done so many retcons to their older lore under the guise of “false human legends” – to say nothing of the blatant retcons of other things like the calendar, or the facepalm design decisions like syncing the timeframes and having bi-weekly updates that clearly stresses their own developers to the point of being hospitalized (HINT ARENANET HINT!) – that it’s borderline ragequit worthy for someone like myself who loves proper and good storytelling above interesting mechanics (I can play the mechanically worst game ever so long as it has a good story to it; similarly, I could not play the mechanically best game ever if it had a bad story to it – though if it had no or next to no story like DOOM and Quake then I could deal). If they went and blatantly retconned their new lore as well, then they might as well not bother with a kittening story at all and just go Gintama on us.

I have to say that it’s impossible based on the small amount of information that we know, but it is not impossible. I would agree that the Ventari Tablet wouldn’t be enough to “cleanse” the pale tree, and that the anti-corruption capabilities don’t count for squat, but that doesn’t make it impossible when we know so little about the race, the seeds, the guardians, or anything to do with their existence. Here’s a possibility (not a theory I expect to be real, but provides some connection to Mordremoth while making everything we know about the Sylvari remain true).

The gods come to Tyria and name the Forgotten as caretakers of the land, in this time they spread far and wide watching over the new creations of their masters, (forests, valleys, mountains, etc…). In their exploration, they find the seeds, and test them for draconic corruption. They find what they most fear, and in order to protect the land that they have been ordered to defend, they use the cleansing ritual they used on Glint in order to free them of the corruption tying them to Mordremoth. They then placed guardians (similar to Crystal Guardians, though likely created by the local plant life) to watch over and protect the now innocent and undefended seeds.

I would personally think it more likely for the opposite effect to be occurring. As Konig said, the ED’s are “sweating” out magic and thus they are more likely to be giant reservoirs that the magic is flowing away from not necessarily flowing to. It is like air currents, air always wants to move from an area of high pressure (dragon) to low pressure (rest of tyria). The ley lines are just the path of least resistance (electrical term) to get out and away from the dragons. I would assume once a dragon is starting to awaken, they likely have a method of stopping or slowing the “sweating” process, which would make it possible for Scarlet to re-route the magic right back into Mordremoth’s mouth.

My Sylvari characters can’t make thorns come out of their fingers, and there is no recorded instance of any other sylvari doing so. It’s not what they do. I asked for a specific example and all you folks could do is give other examples. Nice try, but no cigar.

Wow really???

How did Scarlet make Mordremoth awake?

in Lore

Posted by: Narcemus.1348

Narcemus.1348

I’d say it’ll probably be like a Zhaitan scenario. The time period between his awakening and the following invasions was much faster than the time period for the other ED’s. This is likely because of the fact that Zhaitan was in an area where there was ample magic to consume, and a multitude of corpses to corrupt. He basically hit the jackpot upon awakening, minus waking up with a Bloodstone as a pillow…. Because of this, I have a good feeling that Mordremoth will start acting soon. That and the fact that the best time to hit a target is when it is weakest. It is best not to let Mordremoth find the time to create an army and attack Rata Sum.

How did Scarlet make Mordremoth awake?

in Lore

Posted by: Narcemus.1348

Narcemus.1348

From our understanding, the sleeping of the Elder Dragons was forced this last awakening. Basically the Seers took away all of the magic in Tyria and the ED’s were forced to sleep in order to keep from starving. When the time came to awaken again (when there was enough magic back in the world) they needed magic fed to them in order to rise. This was the job of the Great Destroyer for Primordus for example. We do not have any info on how the others rose, though. I would say it is likely (because of the every 50 year time schedule) that the re-routing of the leylines was used in order to allow Mordremoth to awaken earlier than he was supposed to.

The biggest theories lie around The Dream and their connection to it, although there isn’t anything to really found our speculations on as of yet.

PS: it’s nice to know I’m not the only one who plays it off as all my characters traveling together (for the most part) xD

Oh yeah, you aren’t alone. My backstory includes all of my characters meeting each other slowly right after the racial PS and slightly before or during the Orders scenarios. After we, and Kiel, sorted out the problems between the Consortium and the refugees (aka burning the contracts) he was out a job and appeared during the Queen’s Jubilee as Hob-o-Tron. Here he played music against Marcello Digiacomo for hand outs. Here both of them were captured by Scarlet’s Aetherblade thugs and were rescued from them by us. Then at Wintersday both re-appear in Lion’s Arch raising funds for rebuilding in Divinity’s Reach because they were tried as co-conspirators with Scarlet basically as scapegoats. He then appears as Heal-o-Tron in the Gendarran Fields refugee camp where he tried to heal those who were infected by the miasma, but was pushed out by Seraph who were looking to re-capture him and force him back into repaying his “debt”. Now he’s actively trying to fight Scarlet in order to clear his name.

@ThiBash: You can headcanon it as Kasmeer (wouldn’t that be fitting?) or Rox was the one to land the final blow. Both have ample motivations for doing it.

In my headcanon, all 5 of my characters are journeying together at the same time. My Charr Warrior is the one who gladly spiked Scarlet through the heart with his sword.

I suppose I could. I could even say ‘Kasmeer made me do it with mesmer magic’. It’s just that the whole thing makes me feel so cheap.

Your character has resolve, and therefore did not spare a mass murderer.

I’m sorry, but my character is way too much of a whimp for even that. She even tries to avoid hitting critters with aoe while going about the game world if it can be done.

I understand what you’re getting at. My Guardian was originally similar to that in his back story. His only interests were in protecting others and healing wounds. Sadly, his perspective of the world changed after two large events. First, the centaurs took his sister forcing him to feel a failure for being unable to defend his own sister. Second, he walked out into Shaemoor only to find it burning under a centaur siege. When he saw this is broke him, it was then that he realized that sometimes you must kill in order to protect what you hold dear. This lead him down the path to eventually killing Kellach in order to protect his queen, and eventually killing Zhaitan. By the time he got to Scarlet, killing her was the only way to protect future generations of Tyrians from the types of evils she has performed… It was an easy task.

kralketorik used to be a “mountain range”

You realize that this “mountain range” separated two zones that used to be probably roughly comparative to ONE zone in GW2… Plus we do not know how much of him was revealed, was the beginning and end the top of his head and end of his tail? If so I’d say he’s comparable to Zhaitan today…

Zhaitan isn’t very big at all; he’s not even remotely close to the size of a mountain range. Zhaitan is around as large as the special airship they used at the end of the Arah story mode.

My point is that Kralky wasn’t a mountain range… The concept art he posted is just concept art, what we saw in game (in GW1) was much smaller. He was large, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t call his GW1 model to be any larger than the model made for Zhaitan in GW2. I want to take a moment to note the size of the Glory of Tyria at the end, it it about 2/3 the size of Zhaitan, which minimizes how big he looks, but in and of itself it dwarfs Tequatl sized champions and other airships.

She did “lay” “eggs” sure. Except that said eggs were transparent, made of crystal, and dragon minions (champions included) cannot reproduce. Glint “laying eggs” is just her making Branded Crystals that spawned a branded dragon-shaped minion – the Crystal Guardians and Crystal Spiders can easily be considered Branded, in terms of lore.

It should be noted that not all dragon champions are actually dragons. Mordus Lethe was a dragon champion of Zhaitan, but was a Risen Norn; the Destroyer of Life, also a dragon champion but of Primordus, was mantis-shaped; the Dragonspawn, a dragon champion of Jormag, was made from ice, mist, and bones (of minotaurs and other things).

Not to mention the Nornbear, aka Svanir. Merely an Icebrood Norn in bear form. And as draconic as he may be, Drakkar definitely feels more like the “sandstorm crag” type elemental shape as opposed to a dragon.

https://dviw3bl0enbyw.cloudfront.net/uploads/forum_attachment/file/86503/AluWU.jpg

From GW2 beta, back when Arah Explorable had Zhaitan’s corpse. And you’re wanting five times that size.

Problem is, that is a completely different model of Zhaitan… But someone on the lore forum did go through the trouble of getting the Zhaitan, Teq, and Glory of Tyria models and posting them on the lore forum. I think he stated that in these models an asura is roughly 4 feet tall (which based on the standards placed is roughly correct). With this in mind Zhaitan has a wingspan of 500 meters and a length of 506 meters, in comparison Tequatl has a wingspan of 188 meters and a length of 113 meters. So basically you want a dragon that has a wingspan of 2500 meters?!? You realize that is 1.5 miles wide?

I love every piece of Guild Wars lore (including first). It’s delivery in GW2 disappointed me a little, but as the Living Story goes, it seems to get better. I wish to see more information about Elona and, especially, Cantha. I loved Factions, and I wish that we will see Kaineng City in GW2. I was so excited when the Bazaar of the Four Winds was announced, because it seemed to me like it had some connection with Cantha, and I was little sad that it wasn’t that much in the end. There were also hints about Glint, but that also seems to be left alone. I hope it will go further in next “season” of Living Story, and that there will be some more information about Cantha to be found.

Oh, there are tons of little dangly threads of lore that can be expanded upon, this is how ArenaNet works. I mean the lore behind the Elder Dragons and the Great Destroyer was all tied to a book found in the Sorrow’s Furnace “dungeon” that was just a dangly thread of lore for years. No information on exactly what this Great Destroyer was, until they decided to use it and expand upon it. You will find that this and dozens if not hundreds of other pieces will end up working that way, or will just be left forgotten.

On the topic at hand, I know I am personally a fan of dialogue between the hostiles. This is not just dialogues on agro, but also perhaps a toxic krait and a toxic nightmare courtier talk about their distrust of the MA or Aetherblades as we approach, or the changed state of the Krait since the toxic pollen was created. Perhaps to toxic nightmare courtiers talking about how the pollen changed the krait, and they could perhaps use it to change their own brethren or even other races to the nightmare. Or naturally, Aetherblades kneeling and picking up loot from the busted open bank and talking about all the loot they’re getting (I almost imagine some talk about an amazing precursor they just nabbed or something, lol) Stuff like this (while it is often overlooked in massive zergs) helps to flesh out the hostiles a lot. They are not just punching bags for loot, they have plans and ambitions which would be nice to see a bit of. I know I find myself running solo through mobs of them all the time, and coming upon this kind of convo would be a nice surprise

From what we can see, the very same thing happened to Varesh. Morghan spends a few moments talking about how she had changed since she started worshiping Abaddon. You even see a brief moment of doubt in one of the cinematics (very brief). The demons don’t really necessarily have a specific timeline in mind, they can take their time and play their games with people’s minds. If you want to say that this is the same that’s happened with Scarlet, I’d disagree. Whatever has infested her mind has taken over in a very short time. It may not have taken control right away, but it wasn’t too many months before she gave in.

All in all, the demons didn’t control in the way that we see Scarlet controlled. The demons in GW1 were physically present and using persuasion. The thing in Scarlet’s mind is entirely in her mind, and it seems to have it’s own housing within, something we’ve not seen of a demon before. This is not to say that what you speak of is impossible, merely that it is not within the known capabilities of any creature that we have currently met (at least to my memory).

Grenth presides over ice. Abaddon held on to water until he was destroyed, after which Lyssa appears to have taken it.

Odd I could of swore it was Grenth that inherited that power, I’ll chalk that one to a faulty memory.

Edit: I can confirm it was faulty memory, Grenth was patron of Water Elementalists. That’s probably why I thought he had control over water.

I may be wrong, but I believe I myself may have read that somewhere as well in the past. It could have been a faulty wiki article, or perhaps a situation where the lore changed between games. I mean in GW2 Lyssa has changed from having no elemental ties to holding sway over water. If I remember right, in GW1 she held ties over chaos magic…

Either way, should my memory be correct, Grenth had control over ice before he had defeated Dhuum (which was before Abaddon’s fall).

Until the Guild Wars Franchise is concluded the validity of his death will always be contested. This is because the decision can always be changed at a later date if it would mean a more entertaining story.
