Age of the Dragon

Narcemus.1348

You know, you guys have me thinking a bit. Most things found in the Mists are mockeries (to some extent) of creature existing in other planes of existence, such as Tyria. I have to wonder if the magic consuming demons found within the Mists aren’t mockeries of the Elder Dragons. I mean, we’re looking at Elder Dragons and saying that they act like Imps, but in reality, ED’s have been around longer, so by all means imps are acting like ED’s.

So by all means, Konig could be right, but there is a distinct possibility that ED’s are natural to Tyria. As to the theory at hand, the physical form of ED’s wouldn’t be a deterrent in my mind to them having originated as regular dragons in an early draconian race. I mean, what does that kind of concentration of magic do to the physical form of something?

It would be amazing to have a game world that changed due to seasons and such, but it seems somewhat unlikely in Tyria. At least for a while.

But yeah, definitely remember the effects of a certain icelandic volcano. I had about 5 hours added to my flight out of Paris, France back to the states due to it’s ash cloud. You can imagine how short the next layover was….

Kurrilino, you wanted an explanation and they’ve given it to you. Although I’d agree it doesn’t exactly make perfect sense to me either, this is the explanation that we have been given in the game. That Mount Maelstrom was the cause of the warming of the Steamspur Mountains (aka Southern Shiverpeaks). I have to agree that it feels like a shame to lose it. The Shiverpeaks were some of my favorite as well, based on the zones and especially the music, but areas around where the “Deldrimor Front” title is on the map still have snow in them. I am holding out hope that perhaps some of Thunderhead Keep still has some of it’s old charm.

Consumption of Zhaitan

Narcemus.1348

I personally hope that they would not have Zhaitan’s body be consumed, because his body’s continued existence would give us, the Durmand Priory, and the Pact an extreme boost in figuring out what exactly makes up an Elder Dragon. Although I have already toyed with the thought of his body being consumed by another, I would have thought that Trahearne would have mentioned something like that happening. As I would assume his body being watched in the very least, to assure his current state as dead continues.

The Cataclysm Tapped into Ley Lines

in Lore

Posted by: Narcemus.1348

Narcemus.1348

If the ley lines follow the path of least resistance, then the question is where do they flow to? If they flow towards the lowest concentration, then why ley lines at all or where is this place without magic? If they have a natural habit to concentrate, then again why ley lines and not a single giant magic blob (aside from no magic at other places after a certain time)? Instead, we have a floating system with intersections like a giant network.

My personal perspective is relatively similar to Konig’s. Basically you have a dry barren world with a few highly concentrated oceans of water located on high plateaus. The water slowly erodes it’s way out and follows paths of least resistance away from the highly concentrated water locations and down to the lowest parts of land. Originally it would likely just create slightly less concentrated blobs of water much like lakes, but as the water continues to fill out, those lakes grow larger becoming oceans. These oceans have currents. No longer are the giant blobs of water static and immobile, they are moving, flowing, due to the very nature of the water and various other environmental effects. This is how I view ley lines, both their origins and their current state. The high plateaus are all empty, or at least sealed off, but the water below continues to move and flow.

The Cataclysm Tapped into Ley Lines

in Lore

Narcemus.1348

But in that case, the magic always would flow from the dragons to the lay lines, and if the dragons feed on the lay lines, that wouldn’t make much sense, would it? My theory is that the ley lines are inherent to the world of Tyria, natural pathways of massed magic, not affected directly by the dragons. Of course, massive geographical changes would alter them, so in that way they are affected, but my point is that the lines do not originate from the dragons. They are just very convenient for them.

I agree with what Konig states, I’ve had the same personal perspective for a long time, but I think you are misunderstanding things a little bit. The Elder Dragons sweat magic while they sleep. This is a known fact, which is where the early part of the theory comes into place. While the dragons are sleeping they are excreting magic which flows away from them on paths of least resistance known as leylines. This is the theory anyways. When the dragons awake, they stop sweating magic, but the magic that is already loose continues to flow through the world in leylines. So, where leylines may have originated from the ED’s, these probably “dried up” and instead started to create cycles or loops throughout the world. One (or multiples) of these “loops” was what Scarlet tapped into and re-routed to Mordremoth to awaken him.

Where does it say/show that the dragons don’t care about the actions of their minions? Also I thought that minions were given the will of their masters, so if they show hostility to different minions, it would make sense that it comes from the dragons hostility to each other.

While most minions have a fanatic devotion to their elder dragon, the elder dragon doesn’t necessarily control the minutia of their day to day lives. If we saw an army of risen charging upon a group of branded I would definitely consider it intent by Zhaitan, but if it’s just one or two risen riling up against a branded that crosses their path I wouldn’t see it as direct hostility between the two.

Necromancy has some pluses with having the ability to possibly commune with the dead.

I would imagine Mesmers would have some pluses as well, being able to get into the minds of others and (using illusions) perhaps even get a confession. Though we have no clue how the court of law would view that…

I can’t necessarily see how being a warrior, guardian, elementalist, engineer, ranger or thief would help outside of having inside knowledge of their specific field

I also wandered shattered LA. First going to my favorite spot, the underwater ruins of Old LA, where many times I’d swim around – looking at those remnants of a city that was ‘home’ in GW1 for so many years. Each time feeling nostalgic, and remembering all the fun times there…. 250 years ago. Now it is no more, so little of it left. I’ll never feel the same wonder, and mourn the loss of that visible tie to GW history and lore.

Why do people keep saying old LA is gone? It’s right where it always was (except there’s a bit of breachmaker on top of it that you can still swim under).

Someone should start OOLAPS: Old-Old-Lion’s-Arch-Preservation-Society and raise gold to clear the debris and preserve this bit of Krytan history

Well the Captain’s Council knows that, but there are definitely NPC’s that are showing some racial hatred. It will take some careful maneuvering for this to fade. And asura were involved, at least in the sense of getting the Aetherblades on their feet in the beginning. I would bet that there was still some Inquest funding and/or expertise going into the creation of Scarlet’s drill.

So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the heroes from GW1 would be stronger than the heroes in GW2.

Perhaps in GW1 having duel professions was indeed the norm. And perhaps having 200+ skills was also the norm. Skills like Empathy, Eviscerate and Spiteful Spirit were clear indicators on how strong GW1 heroes use to be. We didn’t think much about all of that at the time because everyone was that strong.

Actually, it is pretty blatantly stated by the ghost of a NPC in the Eye of the North that the GW2 PC is far more advanced than the GW1 PC.

Who knows, it might be interesting to find out that the destruction of Orr was merely a pleasant (but unexpected) surprise. We know so little about what happened that it is not outside the realm of possibility to believe that using the scroll where he did, mixed with the possible use of dragon magics by the charr (aka searing cauldrons), lead to the releasing of a leyline convergance and thus the devastation of Orr. For all we know, Abaddon had hoped to use the Realm of Torment to create a tormented version of Arah as a mockery of the works of his brethren, but having Arah destroyed was an acceptable loss.

I disagree that they are mindless forces of nature, it is just that they are so much bigger than us that we cannot fully understand them or their motives. I like to think about them as a god (be it the Muslim, Christian, or Jewish God, but not the personified gods such as the Human gods, or greek/roman mythology), a being that we can see/understand bits and pieces of but can never fully understand the complexity of. I think that giving us, the players, more interaction with different types of minions who have different understandings of their “masters” would go a long way for helping to give a “face” to the Elder Dragons.

All I can say Konig is, I hope you are right. Just because the original model was massive doesn’t mean the real model is small.

Oh that’s cute a layman in astronomy do you know what a parsec is?
Or did you know that a googolplex has so many zero’s that even using a 4mm font to type it the number would still be longer than the diameter of the visible universe?

Now listen layman I did not come here to argue if something is big or not but to answer the question why Zhaitan is small compared to what was expected.

And I did not post on here to be ridiculed by someone by merely punching a hole in their argument. Comparing one model to another doesn’t make the initial thing small, just smaller. As to your other sentences, well I don’t see the point of them.

My personal question is how exactly is the “original model” what you expected when it is a model that we never had a chance to interact with, hmm? Are you some wizard that by chance fought this massive version of Zhaitan unlike the rest of us?

Yeah, it’s merely a theory. I mean for all we know the Pale Tree chose to make them human formed because through Ventari and Ronan she knew how wide spread humanity was and she wanted her children to be accepted as living beings and not just more plant life to be killed/studied. There are a hundred reasons it could be, and just because the information isn’t in game doesn’t mean that the lore on it is sketchy, just that it hasn’t been explained or discovered yet.

I’d disagree that the story of GW2 says the humans were the bad guys. It’s merely that, like with every war, either side is considered bad by the opposite side. Not to mention, killing the far removed descendants of the people who took your homeland is starting a new crime. They did not directly harm you, but you directly harmed them. No matter what, you won’t come out with a clean slate for either team.
