Pregnantman.8259

I think the changes are okay, and there doesn’t seem to be much DPS loss overall. Lets take a regular Greatsword/Sword + Focus setup as example.

We lost %10 damage from attacking a foe with condition, but we have %10 damage from having Retaliation. The modifier is not as easy to keep as before, but its still close. With Greatsword symbol, leaping after the symbol (Light Aura) and perhaps using Focus 5 (AoE Retal) after swap in the symbol would give some retaliation we can use. If Virtues was selected along with Zeal/Radiance combo, one can have nigh permanent Retaliation (Retal on using virtues, bonus Retal duration). If the setup still lacks Retal (solo situations) Save Yourselves can be used as a dps cooldown. With %1 damage bonus on each boon and Retal, it instantly gives %18 more dps – not withstanding the effects of the boons themselves. Overall, I think this can be a fair exchange and we can see Save Yourselves being used instead of Bane Signet as dps utility.

We lost Vulnurability on blind – as a Greatsword/Sword + Focus setup should always choose Zealous Blade (Greatsword trait). I didn’t like this as well, but I never considered Guardians particularly good about applying Vulnurability. Considering a group setup, with some other classes getting Vulnurability buffs I guess the loss evens out. As for the new Zealous Blade trait, we are now given %20 cooldown decrease on Greatsword, which should be a dps increase nonetheless.

We lost %10 damage for Sword, but we have %20 damage from maintaining symbols. These numbers aren’t direct damage increases of course. Assuming that in GS/Sw + F setup one uses the Sword half of the time at best (Greatsword can demand more time with its cooldowns) we lost at most %5 damage. With the new setup we have a symbol lasting for 4 seconds on 16 sec cooldown (%25 uptime). In a perfect world the change should neutralize the loss, as long as mobs don’t move outside the symbol. But honestly, did they ever do that?

We lost %3 damage from Fiery Wrath, but should the GS/Sw + F choose to go to Virtues (it seems best for that setup), the damage loss can be compensated with Power of the Virtuous.

So in my opinion, the numbers still seem the same with core traits – for GS/Sw + F. For other setups with higher symbol upkeep and Retal upkeep (I am looking at you Hammer/Mace + Focus) – the numbers should be much better.

Returning to GS/Sw + F setup, we should have about the same dps from traits with more utility, as we can go as deep as we want to Virtues without sacrificing any traits from other lines. We can finally have the Master and Greatmaster trait options in Virtues without thinking about Zeal and Radiance. It is true we can’t have Master of Consecrations with Unscathed Contender – but I don’t think it would be too big of an issue. I don’t know about you, but when I use Master of Consecrations in dungeons its because I can either not benefit that much from Unscathed Contender for the time, or I provide the majority of projectile defense. I am sure all of you are familiar with WoR/Shield of Avenger/WoR combo that comes with Master of Consecrations and if you are like me you are using this trait mostly for this combo. This combo still will be there as the duration of Shield of Avenger is increased by %50 (10 sec) as baseline. If you are using the trait for more condition removal (Purging Flames cooldown) – now we are free to choose Absolute Precision. If its for more fire field duration well, Phalanx Warrior is getting more popular. So, overall there shouldn’t be much loss in there.

Note: These are the damage modifiers that exist only in the core specs. It seems that with Dragonhunter we will have up to %25 more damage. And this thread is about PvE.

Would using Hammer and Mace/Focus combo be appropiate even if the group is seemingly fine, for the sake of keeping group’s Scholar bonus (with blocks, high regen, heal and protection uptime)?

Or in other words, does a group that is having difficulty keeping the Scholar bonus or just not keeping it %100 warrant an action as response from us Guardians?

Hey all. I have returned to gw2 from a long break and played my Guardian for a while. I noticed that at the times I ran with Hammer and Greatsword, people were quite negative with the choice so I had to explain each time that its not subpar and only %5-10 less dps than best combo. I love to use Hammer with Greatsword and keep seeking the opportunity to do so. Is Hammer really not viable? Are there any others like me? Did you experience similar interactions with your party mates?

Pregnantman.8259

Don’t get stuck on one weapon but try to use them when you see fit. Hammer can provide more mitigation on longer fights, when Aegis or Blind can’t be used, when teammates or you are having difficulty staying alive or keeping Scholar bonus and where the foes are spread – so you can’t see their actions all at once and prepare immediately. Chances are if you are not in an organized group such situations are not uncommon. Also there are 4 more skills Hammer has besides the auto attack that provides mitigation. Surely there are many other gaps Hammer can fill.

A Greatsword on the other hand is pretty much good to go for any situation imaginable. With burst, might, active defense, leap, pull and whirl its arguably the most versatile weapon we have. The only weakness of the weapon is that it deals maximum damage when you use the second skill inside an enemy hitbox. I think obal calculated the dps loss for missing projectiles for up to 1k (in sticky). So there may be situations where an another combo might prove superior, but personally I think wouldn’t be too common.

Camping Hammer alone is only %10ish and combining Hammer with Greatsword is %5-10ish less DPS than max dps we can offer. So if you can’t decide whether to use Hammer or Greatsword, it can be a good idea to use both.

Respectful? Starting a thread about nerfing Guardian’s damage by %70 in the Guardian forums is hardly respectful to the players of the profession. A respectful action would be to make a thread about your difficulties killing the said Guardian and what you could do to improve. It would be really cool if Shield 5 acted like a mobile Sanctuary skill. User would be healed inside and the bubble can be used aggressively to continuously push and ragdoll foes (small knockback for the entirety of duration). Enemies that are pushed or manage to get in the bubble have one of their boons removed every second or enemies who remain inside the bubble are damaged for the duration.

[Suggestion] Marks Trigger on Downed Enemies.

As far as I know Marks don’t work on downed people because downed people are somewhat in the same level of “objects” or “turrets”, as in they can’t be CCed or moved – but nevertheless can still be critically attacked. Since objects can’t trigger Marks because they can’t move, I guess the same thing applies to downed people. Therefore, I think some seperation between the downed mechanic and object mechanics have to be made beforehand to have Marks triggered by downed people.

The build is zerker because you don’t have to have defensive stats if you avoid hits, and you have to finish the foe quick as you might not kite for too long (lag, doorbell, swiftness finishes, some random mob pack attacks etc.)

You cant find the sigil on TP; its one of those new sigils which you actually have to craft through having Weaponsmith 400. I also thought the build might fit your take on the class as a “blue magus”. Cheers.

Note: I made the build editor on phone, so after seeing it again I realized I haven’t included Scepter Power. To save you from trouble here is the build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQRArd7flsApUoFCxfH8DRR8QlVKa9HMCbQlBwEg1TA-TRRBwAX3fU+dT9H86HAcSAMrEkUACsMC-e

Note that I have changed to food to %8 damage on movement food and swiftness on kill. You can eat whatever you want, but when you are trying to take down a champion with this build you generally dont sit back and every bit of swiftness helps. A cheaper consumable for this effect is Experimental Remnant (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Experimental_Remnant).

The only time having more than one warrior is worth while is when u have no to ele or engi to might stack

I main a Guardian in PvE and found that stacking might for the party can be as easy and efficient as that of an engi’s, without much altering in build or setup too. Of course, might stacking Guardians aren’t a norm, but a Guardian can offer his share of offensive support (well, only might) as good as the popular classes if so desired.

1. How do you get Vulnerability from the mace?

2. The AA-chain of mace takes quite a bit longer to complete than the AA-chains of GS or sword, while the modifiers aren’t that much higher plus GS AA grants Might and sword AA 3rd skill has a higher modifier than mace 3d skill of the chain and also hits multiple times.

To me, it looks like a mace would only be kinda useful for a bunker Guardian, and certainly not in PvE.

1. Vulnurability is from the Symbolic Exposure.

2. Greatsword granting might is irrelevant as I didn’t suggest OP to drop Greatsword. It doesn’t matter if mace auto is slow or it doesn’t have quite as much the modifiers, the dps is still quite close to sword. Check obal’s sticky for the calculations. He also did these calculations without considering Symbolic Exposure and Mace 3 as they are not very reliable factors to work with.

To me, it looks like mace is as good as sword in PvE, if not better in some cases.

@OP, yes its viable. The dps is very close, just check the sticky for calculations that I am referring to. People still think its a “bunker only” weapon but its proven to be viable – and its on the forum sticky for all to see.

Mace dps is pretty close to Sword dps and can exceed it too. If your Vulnurability is not capped, Mace brings more Vulnurability than Sword. If you are able to blow your Mace 3 efficiently in rotation that is also another improvement. Finally, Mace can hit objects much more reliably than Sword (Sword AA third chain can miss, typical example is graveling burrows in AC). So I think its fair to say that in pugs Mace has the potential to outdps Sword as the bosses live long enough to land hits (Mace 3) and the Vulnurability is often not capped.

I think you can use Mace the same manner you use Sword in your build, just make sure you slot Radiant Fire or an alternative in Radiance master major trait instead of Powerful Blades. If you need more info just check obal’s sticky.

People don’t die because they “don’t play the meta right”. For example, I die because I am not very familiar with the instance’s mechanics and/or I am not paying attention and/or I am one of the few or the only zerker in party so I draw aggro most of the time.

The point of meta isn’t to “get as much as dps without becoming a glass cannon”. Becoming a glass cannon is perfectly fine if you know the encounter and how to react. My take on the meta is getting as much as dps while bringing meaningful and impactful utility. The meta builds for Guardians usually find this compromise by bringing untraited utility skills and it has been tested and played around with all sorts of people (including a casual such as myself) that such compromise is enough for the group.

I am not saying your heals are weak, the numbers you provided are good indeed. I am only asking if so much support is necessary. As others said you can have Hammer or even keep Mace + Shield and still be in meta, the meta seems flexible about weapon choices.

Note: Whatever your build is or however you like it, its wrong to lie about it to groups which require a specific type of setup ( of which you clearly aren’t following) that they also specified in LFG and even worse if you act snarky about it (“I do reverse DPS and keep you alive”) when people get suspicious. If you want to test your build make your own group or join one that doesn’t ask for zerkers.

The build editor didn’t have it, but I use Sigil of Incapacitation on Scepter (3 second Cripple on 5 second cooldown on crit) to help kiting. If you don’t like Torch or need AoE, have Greatsword on swap.

The point of the setup is basically kiting the enemy to avoid hits, while avoiding hits in return increases your own damage. Let me know if you like it (its close to a standard Scepter build but still).

condi vs power

in Necromancer

Posted by: Pregnantman.8259

Pregnantman.8259

This thread sounds more like a “condi is better ok bye” thread rather than “condi vs power”. If you made a thread to compare, don’t defend one side of the whole OP.

Let me start by saying that this part is about PvE. People have already said it, but it is condi that has wind up time. Reaching 25 stacks takes time, whereas in power builds you can starr the damage right away by dagger auto (or life blast). It is true that Vulnurability needs to be stacked but other than that there is no windup for power and as it is Vulnurability is easily and quickly (quicker than bleeds) stacked and maintained in groups or even solo if it is desired so. Your arguments for might windup is irrelevent as condi needs might as much as power, thus both would be affected by its speed of stacking.

Do you know how much it is calculated for a power necro dps on optimal conditions? 9-10k. The max dps of all classes are gathered and compared by people every once in a while (you can check in google or someone please provide link), and there is never ever a condi build there. Even if you do reach 5k damage (no proofs whatsoever given despite someone pointing out he couldnt do it) its around the half of what power does. And guess what, reaching that optimal conditions requires you to be in a party setup and unless everyone is arranged according to you they will proc bleeds on crits, which will reduce that 5k to something lower. You can argue that condition also does power damage (its not that you do, but many condi fans do), but how much power dps you can dish out with scepter or staff anyway? You said that power is the rabbit and condi is the turtle that wins in the end, but in reality condi is kinda the pet rock.

I think the base damage improvement is the real deal breaker in ascended weapons, as stat increase is minimal. You can benefit from the base damage improvement more if you attack by using the weapon skills of the ascended weapon more, so I think you should get your main hand weapons first since the base damage improvement will constantly be seen through auto attacks, unlike say focus where you can use its skills rather infrequently. Also note that the base damage improvement should be around %5 for one hand weapons and %10 for two handed weapons.

If you want to go for sword/greatsword setup, I would start with greatsword then do sword, scepter, mace, hammer and finally focus. If you want to go with hammer/greatsword setup I would do (I am doing in this order) greatsword then hammer, mace, scepter, sword and focus. You should get scepter after getting the base of your set done (main hand) as it can come handy in some situations where you have to range, kite or solo.

Mace Symbol Cast Time Reduction?

in Guardian

Posted by: Pregnantman.8259

Pregnantman.8259

Yeah I guess it started when some people asked calculations comparing sword and mace dps. After the calculations showed both weapons have almost the same dps without considering additional vulnurability from mace symbol and burst from the third skill, mace became more popular and obal’s pve guide changed sword/greatsword builds to 1-hand/greatsword builds. Funny thing is I think I remember it was also calculated that sword camping had equal dps to staff camping and how shocked I was along with many others.

Anyway, mace has almost the same dps with sword but because your symbol keeps ticking when you swap to other weapon it has more burst capabilities than sword. The symbol has a long cast time, however I think its not much of an issue considering the slowness of the auto attack itself (synergy). Instead a nice addition could be tweaking the third skill like the adding the ability to end the channel in demand to get the protection and/or blast finisher at the start of the channel or from the manual ending.

As others said Greatsword/Sword + Focus is the way to go for leveling as open world foes are almost never immune to blind, so the combo brings the best active defense you can have. For traits I’d first start with 1 points in Honor, then 2 to get Superior Aira. When you can finally go beyond Adept traits I d suggest to retrait and get 3 points in Radiance and try to get Superior Aira again when there is enough trait points Alternatively you can try to slot 2 points in Zeal for Fiery Wrath along with 3 points in Radiance, but keep in mind that on solo encounters Burning is bit hard to maintain on all times. After getting 3 in Radiance and 2 in either Honor and Zeal I believe the rest is optional. I would personally aim to have atleast 3 points in Zeal and 5 points in Radiance.

For runes and sigils I d start with minor runes that give power and precision, and stack them on all gear while getting minor sigil of speed and luck for swiftness and various boons. I’d also carry a scepter with me with sigil of speed and the new sigil that cripples on crit, as sonetimes you can encounter numerous foes that you just can’t constantky blind or champions. For major rune I would stack rune of the pack and whatever else that gives power and precision, and keep the runes same (only upgrade them). For superior runes I would probably complete rune of the pack set or get rune of the scholar. Once you are 80 you can get new rune/sigil combinations as you please.

A sample build could be 6/4/4/0/0, Spiteful Marks, Spiteful Removal (or Axe Training if you use Axe) and Close to Death. For Spite I’d take Weakening Shroud and Banshee’s Wail. For Death Magic I’d take Staff cooldown trait and Greater Marks. For utilities I’d have Well of Suffering, Well of Corruption and Signet of Spite or Epidemic (for condition tagging). For runes I’d go with Scholar and for sigils I’d have Sigil of Fire and Sigil of Night or Air or Hydromancy (the latter two for tagging). I hope it helps.

My only problems with steal are the following:

  1. It is obstructed by absolutely nothing far too often.
  2. It can rip Aegis, though it is not an unblockable skill.
  3. It can be utilized even while you’re CCd
    • If you are hard CC’d, you should not be able to use any skill that aren’t stunbreaks. Plain and simple.

So to fix a skill you propose to change the entire system? Any skill that doesn’t have a cast time can be cast when stunned and all classes have such skills as a means to counterplay against hard CC should their stunbreaks run out (which should happen comparing the cooldowns of CC and stunbreaks). To me the only problem with steal looks like it can’t get obstructed.

Guardian has good support options at their hands, but each with a price. The OP gives Staff as an example so I ll touch on that.

Staff attacks are lower dps comparing to other weapons we have, one must stay inside the symbol long enough for it to be effective, fourth skill while providing might and heals to allies is a long channel that locks the user in place. Second skill is quite good but not overpowered as it requires to pass through allies. Honestly only the only that doesn’t have a tradeoff in Staff is the fifth skill, but I’d say that now it puts the user in combat it became more tactical to use. Overall Staff is a good support weapon, but as a tradeoff it has low damage and requires people to be somewhat well positioned or stationary to be effective.

Being in enemy hitbox can sometimes be tricky when they are moving, too small or their aggro is on the player. If the calculations are made by that assumption, does hitting poorly with Whirling Wrath affect the dps substantually?

Your teammates need to stay close to you so that you can apply boons (and heal yourself), place symbol under etc. Altruistic Healing is as strong as the number of boons you can grant.

Adding to Drarnor, siphons scale a tiny bit of power in their damage counterpart, and healing power in their healing counterpart so they are not completely uninteractable; its just hard to build on it.
