ANet made it clear from the very beginning that this game wouldn’t adhere to what you are talking about. Its been fairly successful, I think, it trying to do that. Some misteps, sure…but level scaling isn’t one of them.

Uses 5 ectos per item. Weaponsmithing is a good trade. Peeps are always looking for GS’s and daggers.

Harvest, harvest, harvest…everywhere you go. Play DE’s for the mats as well as the pick-ups. Sell mats and blue/green gear on the TP. I made nearly 3 gold by just selling extra mats just last night.

In the long run, take up crafting…good xp and eventually you’ll be able to make that 20 g item you are seeing on the TP for 2-3 gold in mats.

Rangers have a 25% perma speed buff with use of signet. Couple that with a warhorn and the elite skill “Rampage as One” for an added 33% ( I think…at work now). The warhorn is re-usable every 25 sec or so and can buff your party every time also. Pretty speedy all the time

To each their own I suppose…I think the level scaling is one of my favorite things in this game.

Ranger for pve soloing. If me n my bears can’t kill it, I can outrun it with a 25% speed signet, warhorn and elite “rampage as one skill”. My main explorer toon. Pretty easy to level.

Some are bugged, yeah….send in a bug report and hope. Then go do something else. Its not the end of the world.

I have both….I also prefer the Necro over the Ele. I use scepter / dagger & staff in a condition build & wells. Lots of aoe’s and a faster aoe cast speed than the ele. Just a fun class to play.

I’d love to have a Centaur Beserker w/ 2 curved scimitars…..

The three extra character slots for one of each class is the only thing I’ve spent gems on so far, so I thought of myself as an altoholic. But leveling a whole other character of the same class just to use a different weapon set? Seriously?

You can’t really explain the disease and thought processes of an altaholic. Trust me..the reasons for our behavior make perfect sense to us…kinda. Even if it leaves our fellow players scratching their heads.

I have one of each. Every time I sign onto one I haven’t played in awhile, I find myself thinking..“Hey, this is fun”..and that toon gets a workout for a couple of days. I leveled an engineer up to 80 and while that was fun, I have barely played it since.

But I’m working on my necro a lot right now cause I like running it in wvw.

I’m an altaholic anyway. Some of my classes are on their 4th or 5th incarnation. I deleted a level 46 warrior to empty a slot to make a thief and ended up eventually buying another slot to make a new warrior…go figure.

So basically, you are saying only those players with a boatload of time and nothing else to do should be commanders? Seems to me that you are narrowing the field pretty radically.

Commanders will show their true colors eventually. In how they treat the people following them to their basic game knowledge. The current system gives “us” the power to choose the commanders we follow.

“Acting maliciously” is so subjective. Even if you keep chat logs, text cannot transmit intent.

The problem is pugs. The answer is to find a guild of decent people to play with. May take you awhile, but it’ll be worth it in the end.

EQ and EQ2 forums sound just like this one….even now. Peeps saying that if SOE doesn’t do this or that right now the game will be over. Both games have been going for over 10 yrs. I played EQ2 for nearly 4 yrs. and the forums sounded just like this one.

I’ll be here for several years at least.

The problems are the WP costs.
I admit that most of the times I prefer saving money than helping someone in need and earn nothing but losing cash.
The WP cost don’t incite you to help people, we know that.

WP costs are minimal if you actually play the game. I never think twice about wp costs. I just go. I know I’ll make it up somewhere.

This is the question i always ask ppl when im there to run ori and claw is up. The answer is always the same, “because its fun”. People don’t know what fun is? But i think the real reason is because most of those ppl are new to the game and just reached level80. Of course dragons are decent and ‘fun’ the first 5 times you kill it but after—— worst and most brain dead event gw2 has. I did my first Claw after like 1 month of not doing any dragons at all yesterday. Spent 37 minutes, got 5 blue weapons/armor kitten and 1 green talisman, kittening awesome and worth doing for some1 with over 1k hours in gw2!

Thats because you define “fun” in terms of loot taken from the experience. There are other definitions. Each one of them as personal to whomever is bothering to define it.

When we do dragons, we pull in members from all across the maps. We’re laughing and joking on voice about generally silly kitten…most prob not even pertaining to the dragon. The dragon is just an excuse. None of really care what kind of loot it gives. Just that we have good time.

I don’t care about the rewards in any case. Dungeons and just traveling around pay better. But, like so many others say…its usually a big group, its exciting, its social and fun.

If its not fun for you, don’t do them.

Ask. Click your “say” option on your chat board and talk to the people around you. You might be surprised.

I wouldn’t knock out the Necro (or any class for that matter) by what you read on these boards. There are some that would have you believe that certain classes are so broken as to be unplayable. The Necro & Engineer being two of the current favorites to beat upon.

Its simply not true. I suggest you play both the Mesmer and the necro at the same time. The playstyles are different enough so that when you just want something different, you have it.

I have all 8 classes. 2 80’s and the rest spanning from lvls 30-60. All of them are easily playable in group or solo.

People come , people go. Its the same on every game in existence. But this game is only a few months old. Its still in the process of fining down who will be long term players and who will not.

If you don’t like the game, fare well in your search for the ultimate online game. Some of us will be here for years. Imagination fills in the blanks for us.

Ya know…I was looking at the map this morning before I went to work. ANet has left a lot of stuff blank. Tells me they have big plans. Maybe one of these days, I’ll go explore them.

Art, art and more art. The graphics of any game are as important to me as the game play. I love artwork in this game, the vistas, characters all combine to be a pretty immersive game.

I just hare off into any land. Doesn’t matter to me if I’ve completed every heart on aother alts…i haven’ on the one I’m playing. New game , new imagination all over again.

My main is a mesmer…They are indeed slow — there is no real getting around that. However, I have found that other players are pretty nice about popping a speed boost on you when they see you running by.

Regardless of the speed issue, I find mesmers more fun to play than other classes. For dynamic events you really need to be using staff as a weapon for the chaos storm AOE. If you spec for condition damage you are able to tag mobs and do enough damage to get loot even in bigger zergs. You will never be as efficient as an elementalist with AOEs but IMHO mesmers are more fun to play.

I’ll usually run my ranger with longsword/warhorn to keep our mesmer moving quickly enough to stay up with the group in wvw…cause we luv her, lol. But without help….the miniscule 12 sec speed buff that focus allows just won’t let them run fast for very far.

Even the Necro has Signet of the Locust to buff a permanent 25% speed buff….did they just forget about the Mes?

I do not believe we need raids as WoW does it, i believe Guildwars 2 need to look back at Guildwars 1 and how that worked (successfully i might add) and go back to its roots.

Ditch the dungeons and gear treadmills and go back to how GW1 played..loot wasn’t as necessary and the game was really fun from start to finish..

I hated GW1..love GW2…so go figure.

But for everything stated here about whats wrong with GW2, there available outlets (re: other games) to fulfill those needs. GW2 / ANet’s vision works for a lot of other people though. There is no other game quite like it out there right now.

But no single game will ever satisfy the amount of opinions on this forums. So ANet might as well stay with their own vision and let the populace sort itself out as it will.

That statement is the crux of what ANet did in GW2. They took away the “need” for any particular class over another in completing anything.

Some folks don’t like that. I think its a breath much need fresh air in games like these. Somehow, there is always a way to complete almost any task with almost any party make-up.

Put 10-15 points in your pet traits and they become pretty darn useful. I use the brown bear and polar bear almost exclusively on my ranger. But you have to manage them…can’t just let hare off wherever they want. Make them work for you…its not hard.

I solo all 8 classes. 3 Level 80’s, the rest from lvl 30-ish to 60. All have advantages and disadvantages. NONE are so broken as to be unplayable regardless of what you read here.

That said, you will do “glancing” strikes and almost no dmg if you are playing in an area 6+ levels above your own. You can still play there if play with a group…but dmg is negligible.

I quit playing for the most part because of the lack of roleplay server, and how the account names are visible to all. It seems goofy to me they would not have given a single RP server designation or the ability to toggle account names.

I have never RP’d in GW2 and have not seen it and have been on the Toast since launch. I re-subbed to another game just to get that type of engagement. A ‘safe space’ for RP in a mmoRPG? Too much to expect I guess.

The lack of effort stuck us with a sword and board ‘shooter’ population… Players with names like ‘Runnypoopoo’ are not people I want to play with.

Really? I run across RP groups all the time in the human areas of TC. Watched an RP wedding in DR over the holidays. They did a great job. Didn’t know any of them..just a passerby stopping to watch. Was pretty cool.

I see them in Kessex Hills all the time too.

We always roll on RP servers for the maturity and sense of community RP’ers bring to a server. TC would be a much more mundane place without them. Even to this day…I still give my characters real names.

Backpeddling is essential as a Ranger, the pet is usually dead as a doorstop, limping back and dragging all the mobs with it.

So it’s great to be backpeddling into more mobs that just respawned behind you, with a pet thats back to 80% health but still does nothing, great fun.

My bears (polar & brown) tank for me in Orr. Honestly, if your pets are dying, put a few trait points in them. Doesn’t take more than about 10 to make them really useful.

That said, they are not “fire n forget” either…you have to manage them. Rein em in and hold them when you need or send send them out to tank. Pet mgmt 101.

But to the original question…backwards movement in imo is every bit as important as any other direction. Why short yourself an option?

If you have an Elementalist that can’t match your Necromancer in pure AoE damage, you’re doing something horribly wrong with that Elementalist.

Ele aoe cast speeds are too slow for my tastes. When they finally get off, they do a lot of dmg. In the meantime, my necro is stacking condition upon condition.

But back to the ops original inquiry. IMO, the Necro is a very viable choice and darn fun to play once you figure it out. It appears, however, that some would rather say it all “broken” without really investigating the class.

Sorry you haven’t figured out how to play a Necro. Mine can kill multiple mobs 2-3 levels above her in PvE. I play all 8 professions and none of them can match my Necro for pure aoe havoc.

Scepter / dagger & Staff. Signets only…no minions. Other than the Elite Flesh Golem, though he isn’t technically a minion.

I’d hate to see raids come to this game. It would go against the most basic tenets of what Anet said this game was about. I know some feel that Ascended gear does that…I don’t think it does, but thats just an opinion.

Raiding and the mindset it brings would however.

I wouldn’t bother then. The game mechanics are basically the same as they were. Except for Fractals.

If you were here before though, then you already have paid for the game…so why this post? Why not just jump in and see for yourself?

There are tons of games that allow you to be tank, healer or dps. This is one of the very few that stepped out of that mode.

I don’t miss class specialization at all. Where the success or failure of a party depended on having a tank or healer. Its not for everybody though…but there is no subscription fee either. So go play one of the other games for awhile. We’ll still be here when/if you come back.

Haters don’t see the difference between a fanboy thread and a topic praising some aspects of the game. If the OP were saying “OMG, the game is perfect, there is nothing to be improved!”, it would be a fanboy topic. Saying “I like this aspect of the game” is just telling ArenaNet how one specific part of the game was well done enough to be pleasant for someone.

Interesting to note that positive commentary is always labelled “fanboi” while haters commentary is somehow justified by how much they supposedly love the game.

Now why you would ever want to play that way is a whole nother’ question. But to each their own, I suppose.

The game isn’t about hitting cap. Never has been. Thats what has been so confusing to so many people. Once I get a toon to 80, I rarely touch them again. I suppose once I have all 8 classes at 80..I’ll start working on something, I suppose.

What’s up with Thieve’s weapon choices, or rather, lack thereof…

For me, the Thief’s biggest issue is weapon viability. Overall, it is 90% dagger/dagger. I would like to see the sword reworked to be a bit more effective, and have a benefit when used from stealth.

Also, using a sword in the offhand would be nifty too.

PS: Anyone use sword in a viable and fun build?

I run Sword/Pistol for PvE and WvW. My build focuses on increasing damage output and can easily crit other players for 14-20k damage in a single pistol whip. Not sure why so many thieves dislike, especially since you can move out of the animation at any time now. If you build yourself right then you won’t have any issues.

Yep…me too. Sword / Pistol is a good combo. I mostly pve with it though…stealth in, PW once…twice if I’m not taking too much dmg…stealth out and shortbow. Traited for 20 crit, 10 power and 14 toughness right now at lvl 54…darn few pve mobs I can’t take down.

I don’t pvp…and haven’t taken her into wvw yet….

Yep…you “can” solo a lot of this game. Joining in DE’s as they pop. But if you want to run with large pve groups, you need to find the people that do those kinds of things.

So much of these kinds of complaints could be solved with a good guild.

Idiotic interpretation of freedom of speech, in any case. No laws allow you to be a complete kittenhole in someone elses home. You have to abide by my rules or hit the road if you step into my house. ANet is no different…EULA is their rules. You signed it, you play by it or…hit the road (with help from ANet in some cases)

Play both and make up your own mind. But, that said, early on..a thief can be challenging. A warrior is pretty op & easy in low levels. You’ll need to get both to at least level 30, imo, to make a good decision.

I have one of each of those classes right now and intend to keep on playing both…
