As a lifelong Mesmer, I can tell you that it’s definately the most challenging and rewarding thing to play (if not incredibly frustrating to level).

The class is all about illusions, deception and denial of reality. It lends itself to some pretty interesting mechanics that feel great when you can pull them off, and rather punishing if you should make a mistake.

Deceiving mindless AI. So challenging.

I can’t say I agree with many of these points.

Class stacking is a byproduct of amulet stacking, and that there are singular amulets that are much better than the rest. You can have two necromancers that are completely different because of what amulets they suggest. Whilst what you suggest can alleviate the symptom of class stacking, by cutting it off, removing amulets will just make people min max the same meta builds they were using before, but with much greater potency. It won’t alleviate the problem.

The idea situation of course, is build diversity, that you can have 5 guardians in the same game all running different builds and still doing ok, but I doubt that can happen.

I can agree with toning down the passive stun break procs and definitely can agree with the cd reductions being removed. I can’t really agree with the rest.

I like Ele too. Tempest is hard to play at lower ranks except as a point holder. Many players will actually run out or your aoe buffs.

I think at low skill levels you should stay out of the thick of a fight until all the traps and cooldowns go off, then air attunement in for major profit.

Honestly the game’s rifle Movesets are possibly the most boring of all weapons, i don’t see people’s infatuations with getting the thief to have one.

Oh and also, there are no utilities in the game that specify a specific weapon to use. Another reason why this espec won’t work

Just a couple of thoughts:

Is the rifle to be a 1200 range weapon or 1500 range? Putting an extended range on a minor trait for a weapon that can’t be used without the spec is a bit redundant by the way, might as well just state the ranges in the skills.

That said, if it’s 1200 brought to 1500 with sonic bullets, it’s gonna be useless for two reasons: firstly druids/dragonhunters will outrange you with their longbows (and even if the range is higher there isn’t much you can do to stop them, they have way better defensive capabilities), and secondly the spec does almost nothing to help you survive a warrior or daredevil getting close. In fact it hinders you, since the spec removes the ability to use survival skills like shadowstep. Where are the stun breaks? I see you have permanent stability while attacking, but without a ranged autoattack to keep stacking stab all I have to do is go defensive while you fire, wait for the reload and you’re up guano creek without a paddle. You can’t run from me or kite without swapping weapon sets, at which point you’re a core thief that’s missing a specialisation.

Outside of daredevil, the only condi cleanse you’d have without utilities is pain response and shadows embrace. You only have one way of stealthing on the set, which presumably will have a cooldown, so you’re going to be eaten alive by basically any condi class as long as they save their spike for when you just swap to rifle.

Then there’s the issue of tankiness. If you make the damage coefficients such that you can be tanky, in order to offset the mentioned lack of defense, then a glass rifle thief will deal insane damage. If you make it so you have to build glass (like the rest of the profession currently works), then it’s going to be useless due to an almost total lack of active and passive defense.

Lastly, it seems clunky. You want us to press the utility buttons in a specific order to load the bullets, while immobile, and then press the utility buttons in the correct order to fire the bullets, with minimal stealth or evades, no passive defense and more than likely glass stats? Unless I’ve misread something, there’s not much point to the 5 skill loading bullets randomly if you press the utilities to fire the specific bullet you want. That and the melee autoattack means the weapon has no sustained DPS at range, and with the lack of defense and stunbreaks it’s useless at close range too, forcing you to swap to your second set when pressured.

I’m not trying to be harsh or anything, I just don’t understand how this is going to be anything but a death sentence when swapping to rifle in its current state.

See what I mean? It reads like fan fiction and has nothing about it that makes sense with the current game engine.

Been using this as my unranked build (because ranked is serious business)

Really liking the quickness hijinks that this build can do.

Drop a well > grave digger
Drop a well > heal
Flash shroud while using a greatsword > grave digger

I think the nightfall + well of corruption can be pretty good for fighting on point as well.

I saw it when ESL became a thing. I believe my words were “The game is so unbalanced atm, why are they pushing any type of esports?”

And here we are.

Bad management, poor design choices, a lack of vision from the game director, and a lack of proper communication.

It FEELS like people at anet are just lazy, I know thats not the case (well I hope, at least), because they hardly get anything done., and when they do it’s a mess.

Axe is in a pretty good place right now IMO.

You know. All of these queuing and stacking problems is born from the fact that there isn’t a selection system like other games. The fact that you enter a game pre-selected is a problematic system that causes all these issues.

I’m suggesting multiple classes can’t use the same amulet because, for example berserker and marauder can only be 2 total out of 5. It gets licked once you’re in the match.

But i can get behind the one amulet per player thing. Although there are a lot of very similar amulets, and a whole bunch of bunker amulets would still be bad, even if they are all unique.

You’re suggesting the same thing, except the amulet will indicate your queue time. The problem with class stacking is, you can have say two rangers but with completely different capabilities.

The amulet however, essentially defines their build.

So there’s a bunch of topics about bringing back amulets that got removed (no celestial, you stay dead), and there’s a bunch of topics about class stacking. I thought of an idea that might actually solve both problems, and improve the SPvP scene in the process.

So let’s say we bring back some of the removed amulets, even ones that seemed too good, like mercenary. My idea is that once you queue, your amulet is locked. Match making will not put you in teams that’s will stack several of the same amulets together. In fact, the match making algorithms will put together a team that won’t be completely bunkers or vice versa.

Now, you can still change classes at the beginning of the match but your amulet will still be fixed. Yes, if you aren’t aware of what your other class build is you’re stuffed, so change at your own peril.

Maybe they can get some UI upgrades behind this, like let you see what amulets your team is using, and maybe the pool of amulets in PvP currently, so you can adjust your amulet for quicker match making.

The goal behind this is, conquest some what needs defined roles, or at the very least you should be able to tell what your team is capable of, without writing an essay at the start.

Good pvp games all have this. Look at DotA 2’s hero selection interface. The game will compile a teams statistics to let the team know how much there ability to push or defend is, with zero communication. We don’t have that. We need that.

It still baffles me Ithilwen how you have such a terrible win rate with the number of games you have played. Like do you just refuse to learn why you lose? And keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and just never getting better at the game?

I’ve seen your play in game, it’s not that great. You spend way to much time making posts on the forums about how stuff is OP instead of thinking “Hmm how can I beat this”? I know you play some weird Mesmer build because you think the meta is lame, but when you lose this many games can you really tell yourself with confidence that your build is working?

Like legit if you cant figure it out on your own I will duel you repeatedly and dissect your gameplay/build. Because clearly whatever you are trying is not working lol.

I freely admit that during loss streaks, I’m a rotten sport.

Still, I haven’t asked a fellow player to commit suicide. Others have encouraged me to kill myself rather than be on there team. I refuse to feel bad about giving back as good as I get. Turnabout’s fair play and all that.

I’ve never claimed to be a great player. My win rate is currently slightly above 50% in Ranked and I’ve improved greatly since last season. This is despite choosing to play a core build for aesthetics’ sake.

This, PVP was boring to watch at least with a MOBA i can understand the match and i know when an important objective has been taken and when some big upset happens. in gw2’s pvp if you lose a point 5 seconds later it would be capped again. if a player dies, theres very little weight behind it and considering that theres no counterplay to be heard of aside from “cleanse those condi, pop stab, heal up.”

ask yourself how do you counter a heal or a cleanse? use a CC? how can you tell as a spectator what just happened? boring to watch not too fun to play, and even with skill, Anet’a balance team made little to no effort to open up build diversity or more importantly CLASS diversity.

in short its not the community’s fault the community is what kept ESL running as long as it did, when was the last time someone from the LoL or Smite, or DoTA community talking about how they want to come to GW2 for the pvp? meanwhile Helseth went to Smite, spoke about smite, and is playing smite. dont see a big name from any mobas on our game, and promoting it in the off season do ya?

This. Accusing the community for a failed venture they had little to no opportunity to course-correct is one of the most unintelligent comments said on this forum.

Honestly, I’m not surprised. This esports crusade was destined to fail.

All that esports marketing….for what? 1000 twitch views? OP elite specs? Lack of balance? Broken leagues? No separate queues? Dwindling players?

Sadly, some in this community thought that esports was a good thing was this game, that it made PvP “competitive”. Well…it’s not. It’s failed. Esports was an albatross on PvPs neck that kept it from progressing. Now there’s a chance, if ANet is willing, to finally fix PvP to at least make it fun to play.

I hope ANet and this community learned a lesson from this. A game needs to be fundamentally good before it can be competitive. It’s NEVER the other way around.

while im happy to hear that Anet’s hubris bit them in the backside and refused to let go in this case. a thought occurs to me, maybe this is because they’re losing devs to other companies?

dont get me wrong, im still salty over seeing WvW being left behind in the dust and glad to see that competitive pvp not being a thing in the near future, i still think its probably due to the company being understaffed and not fully up to the task at this moment.

still my original opinion stands that at this moment, this is a good thing and bad thing for gw2. hopefully more good than bad, as much as i want gw2 to succeed in turning this around, i want them to take this lesson and actually learn from it.

That is an interesting twist of logic confusing personal accountability with victim shaming. If a game manufacturer doesn’t implement changes you want after you already paid for the product, does that make you a victim? The only way I’ll believe you are a victim is if you in a third world labor camp where you are chained to a desk and forced to farm gold in GW2 for food. If so you better not waste your time on the forums or you won’t be eating well tonight.

Any successful sporting community had tons of champions for the game at all levels. There are plenty of volunteer coaches at introductory levels, and opportunities for players to learn from more experienced people and play the game the right way.

For the most part people only play sPvP for an in game reward, and do whatever they can to get their rewards as fast as possible. They don’t care how their actions affect other players or the community at a whole. Whether it was stacking a pro league team with all the best players, smurfing, queue dodging, match manipulation, afking, flaming someone that made a mistake…

Whether people chose to believe it or not, their actions are just as powerful as the mechanics of the game. There are plenty of games out there that are more or less the same. They all have flaws and their good points, but some are more popular than others. The best technical solution isn’t always the most popular.

You said the community didn’t go out of its way to make it successful. Sorry, but LULWAT? how is it at all the community’s fault? The made a kitten product, they can’t possibly tell us to enjoy it when it isn’t enjoyable.

In GW1, at the end of the tutorial you get thrown into a pvp match for a taste of pvp. They needed that here.

You hit the nail on the head with what the problem is. Elite specs offer straight upgrades to class mechanics, on top of the lines already being very powerful for the most part.

Still though, I don’t think you fully flesh out why this happened. Look at chrono and mesmer. Chrono’s mechanic is F5, but lets look at the elite spec as a whole. Its designed to fix several problems with core mesmer (namely, self defeating core mesmer mechanic. Too difficult for shatters to land anymore due to the plethora of AoEs that kill the clones instantly, low personal damage combined with low team support outside of reflects and boon sharing via SoI [base mesmer has no alacrity and its quickness generation is not that good honestly]), and it does “fix” them. However it fixes them by buffing other stuff to the point of absurdity (at least it did at launch) instead of Anet actually fixing the problems at the core mesmer level.

Just for example, ANet could improve the entire illusion and shatter mechanic for mesmers. Then they could do away with both IR and chronophantasma, turn them into more unique traits that don’t just encourage shatter spam. There are just some things that need to be fixed at the core level for some classes before they will be able to compete with elite specs, because the elite specs just fix problems in the design itself of a few classes.

It addresses the core mesmer at a low skill level. I’m not a terrible player but I went up against someone who competed in the ESL who was using a core mesmer scholar shatter build and I was obliterated.

Good. Hopefully now they will focus on PvP balance for the average player, instead of ESL level players.

I dont know where you placed last season but i finished almost at plat2 .

The last PvP match i did THIS season looked liked this.

The idea of balancing for weak players wont work and it doesnt work the other way either.

I wished i taped it because i would walk into 1 vs 3 fights and they couldnt even force me to use a rebound.

That’s why I’m always asking them to balance around the average player. They need to be balancing around high gold (making an assumption about the distribution of players here). Not around bronze, and not around ESL. You will never have good balance if you balance around either end of the spectrum.

WRONG – ESL players thanks to their experience and knowledge where first ones to discover something broken or overpowered (because when they competed they where first ones to abuse it when real money was on line). Typical Gold player plays mettabattle build or TRASH build. There is nothing to balance about and even if they have experience…too many times they don’t know what rotation is.

I think it’s correct to balance around high level players. But they should still fix skills that are easy pub stomp skills

Nope, sorry, the Ghost Thief is well and alive since I’ve been killed by two since ‘the patch’.

Invisible should be a long cooldown, not a bounce off the wall or ambient creature and be forever invisible and able to kill without ever being seen.

You can’t always blame an invisible person you know. Sometimes you just need to stop and ask yourself “am i good enough?”

More seriously, some people hate the new version of Swamp; for them, there’s no chance it’s “the best” or even in the top 20 (inb4: yes, I’m aware that there are only 16 atm).
