Also, in the EU, megaservers bring a lot of people using different languages onto the same map. The natural result is often quieter map chat rather than lots of different languages cross talking.

I, personally, preferred Season One’s implementation. But, that’s just me. =)

It’s interesting, but I have fonder memories of season 1 for all its many faults. It certainly will be interesting to see how they evolve the concept.

Personally I can’t convince anyone to play (new or returning) anymore, despite my attempts. Not because I have nothing to recommend because there’s plenty I can say positively about the game, but I can’t explain the Living Story to people that makes them want to pay the 200gem an episode catch up fee.

You can start the instances yourself and bring them along for story and such. All that’s really locked off is achievements.

I know and I understand why the fee exists and I understand the workaround. But when you tell people, it still puts them off as essentially their playtime would be confined to when you were free to play the story.

The lave effect is very nice and if you have a fiery theme going, then I’d go with that.

Otherwise, the watchwork pick will net you some extra coinage so go with that.
There is mine-o-tron as well dont forget. And the bone pick which is also on the gem store atm

Adding a gear check to the game

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Tsw has a community which demands everyone pings their gear or they cannot join a raid. Theres no way round it, even being unable to inspect, players are still expected to ping what they wear or they are blocked from joining most endgame content.

No matter what controls you put in place, no matter what the original good intentions might be, even if you add something as seemingly reasonable and harmless as the OPs suggestion….it will eventually cause problems as players seek to abuse it.

You are right…todays exclusion criteria is bad at times. This wont improve it im afraid

It wasnt a valuable resource for devs tho, they said that. Not because of the suggestions rhemselves, but because suggestions for wvw for eg tended to be there and in wvw. Living world suggestions ended up there and 3 other places! Far too much for busy devs to flick through.

The current system of bracketing suggestion into the thread title is acknowledged by devs to be more useful to them.

To be fair they did add more stuff around the world early on in the Living World, but more or less no one even noticed it so they most likely decided that it was not worth spending the time and resources on it.

No one noticed it, because they didnt advertise it. I remember a dev saying this, yet neglected to mention what they had added. Even the community was baffled at the time.

The centaur war is a good example btw. Same with the charr treaty. Those guys have been standing talking for a long time lol

Looks like another mmo is going for episodic content to make its world more “alive” judging by an announcement i read in a game producers letter.
Sounds like the living world concept is starting to catch on and spread

It’s a good concept, but it’s a bit harder to pull off in practice. Because as other have said before, we might be getting bits of content more rapidly that other MMOs, but they doesn’t make the world actually feel alive though. All areas not touched by the new content are stuck in time and unchanging. It kinda puts a damper on the whole “Living World” concept if some areas haven’t changed since the game launched.

Completely agree. Would love to see wide range changes across the world, but i can understand its impractical. Right now its just a sort of living world. Maybe the pax announcement will build on it

Personally Id prefer them to ditch the season concept and release living world updates in appropriate sized chunks over appropriate timescales. That would feel more natural, than forcing cliffhangers and other cliches which go against a living breathing world feel.

The PAX announcement was tagged that Living World was just the beginning, so something is going to evolve or change.

What to add from GW1 to GW2

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Much of Anets design philosophy goes into keeping players together in the open world. Solo instancing for vanquishing open world maps is almost certainly never going to happen because it will split the the playerbase up too much. I suspect that is a big concern for them if they decide to open up the map to other continents.

Dungeon vanquishing I would see as a more achievable idea, but I doubt they will make them for solo players.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I think the useful npcs comment would address it. We saw improvements in the season 2 episodes with the biconics being a bit more useful – eg LAbyrinth kills quickening noticeably. It was perhaps GW1’s biggest selling point after the no sub, so improving the NPCs to be more like heroes&henchies for instances/dungeons could be an idea.

What if Guild Wars1 was a MMO?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I think one of the reasons GW1 worked so well because it wasn’t what ppl define as an MMO (I will always call it an MMO just because I’m not pedantic about labelling) and did its own thing. Apart from the dreadful storytelling (until the later stages of its life) and the A-B pathing, GW1 was near perfect within the confines of what was created for it.

There’s likely more potential in GW2 bringing a few more things over from its predecessor as well as continuing to develop its own identity.

dueling

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Open World Duelling in itself isnt a problem. Its the culture that stems from it. A decline feature has never solved that problem either, so as a solution it would unlikely be a viable option for the devs to go with.

However there are alternatives. Destinys Edge has the Arena fights and such an Arena would work well for both a gameplay and lore perspective in either LA or Black Citadel or maybe even Hoelbrak.

Maybe the home instance could be adapted to invite a party member for a duel.

Im not against duelling these days, but i dont want to see the idea copy and pasted from other mmos and have spam invites flying everywhere and chat channels descending into the same old madness. Id rather GW did something with the concept that made sense for the world it existed in.

Final LS trailer! A familiar face?

Randulf.7614

Do you mean the wurm trapped in jade bit? Think thats just a flashback to a previous episode in the Hidden Arcana – fairly certain I remember seeing that image in that episode and the rest of the Priory cutscenes in the trailer there are just recaps rather than being new stuff.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

It’s possible there will be a break and there is no reason for there not to be. Problem is kitten ed if they so, kitten ed if they don’t right now. Many complained at regular content, many are now complaining at lack of content.

It could well be that whatever the finale sets up next Tuesday, we are given us content which will last through for a while. That’s my hope anyway – the trailer was unforthcoming.

Where on website is living world explained?

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I suspect there are a few reasons;

Some games heavily rely on their website to promote their game. GW1 and GW2 hasn’t and I think that is largely down to the overwhelming success of its Wiki. During the GW1 era, the GWWIki was considered so good, it was perhaps the best source of reference for a single game anywhere. So much so, that I suspect more ppl use the wiki than the GW main webpage.

Also, the Living Story has changed a few times and I have a suspicion the concept will change again following the PAX announcement.

I’m not saying there shouldn’t be more info, but the above are prob excuses as to why there isn’t

Point of No Return

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

I thought last years’ finale was exceptional and is a benchmark for how I will view this finale. The trailer also hasn’t excited me, but that’s probably because it hasn’t shown anything exciting or anything that indicates “finale”. Anything of value I suspect they are keeping locked away until release.

As a minimum, I hope all the loose ends are tied up completely. I enjoy GW2 more than any other MMO, but I tire of the loose plot ends and cliffhangers.

Beyond that, I’d hope for a new zone or two and a new boss (maybe even two). Wishful thinking I suspect on my part, but one can dream!

season unlocking and availability

in Living World

Posted by: Randulf.7614

Randulf.7614

Season 2 is permanent. Once each episode is unlocked, all within is unlocked with all its content. Some of the background/ambient features will change as time progresses (eg Vine tendrils moving etc), but otherwise you wont be wasting money on that score.

Season 1 is anyone’s guess. As of now, there are no known plans to release it since it would need completely reworking to fit the game and story journal as it now is. Doesn’t mean they wont though.

The Removing of Weapon Skins

Think it was something to do with freeing up vendor space, although I would have thought a 2nd vendor would be more appropriate.

I agree that skins should remain purchasable. Even more so now that there are achievements to be worked towards

Accessibility. Putting aside the extraordinary hyperbole about the NPE, its still a very accessible and easy to pick up game with remarkable fluidity. Sure the NPE has issues to be resolved/repealed, but it by no means destroyed the game.

In comparison, another major MMO I just started feels slow and clunky. The whole feel of GW2 has ruined other MMOs for me and I mean that in a good way. It’s become a benchmark.

I saw music was mentioned. I have to say I think this an area which has imprved greatly. I thought Jeremy Soule’s new stuff for launch was particularly poor (except the GW1 original stuff), yet the new music being introduced has much more flavour and atmosphere. I am guessing that is down to Anets sound team?
