I thought it was luck based too, then I played a bit more, the only “luck” is hoping people arent kittens about their skills and even then you have number 6. Tip: Go for a blue item at the very beginning to hopefully get skill 4, then spam 2 as much as you can to get a lead
Remember that good thieves will stealth every 3-4s. Interrupt the heart seeker.
Maybe, but a lot of the best thieves almost never steath.
Or they won’t use a pistol offhand to set one up.
1. Same could be said for people who don’t want to do Fractals for the kite. Or WvW payers who want a Legendary. It’s just a case of sucking it up really and just doing it.
2. So what you’re saying is stop PvP in a PvP JP?
Your first point is comparing apples to oranges; Other players don’t camp fractals making it essentially unpassable. All you need to do is keep resetting til you get the Fractal you want, and its not that far up anyway. As for the second part, if you want a legendary, you should know the road ahead of you, know what you are getting yourself into. The kites are pve content with one added in a pvp area which wouldnt be so bad if my first point didnt exist. In Obsidian Sanctum, other players can literally make it impossible to get that kite, sure you can get a group but at the same time no one would be in the mood to go there.
As someone who mains a D/D ele and plays thief on the side, I just want to say thank you to everyone in this thread for giving constructive feedback instead of crying “ELE OP! MOAR NERFS!” We really need more discussion like this in all class forums. You guys are awesome.
I don’t really have much to offer the OP as the advice given in this thread is great. The D/D set has a lot of different ways to counter backstab so it’s a tough fight for sure. Like others have said, the element of surprise will really help you. Catching the ele off guard will result in at least one of three scenarios: the ele takes the backstab, blows a cantrip/heal right off the bat, or tries to escape. Either way, it gives you more leverage in the fight.
Yeah I figured as much. Doesn’t help when the DD ele I encounter today actually got he jump on me :p I had to pull out because a backstab thief’s utilities are usually for defensive purposes, so when they are blown at the start, you’re gonna have a bad time. I put up a fight though but each hit I dealt was healed right back. I know to burst after water but it was far too risky seeing as how I had no tools in case something went wrong. But thanks for the feedback guys.
If the next guys name doesnt start with an R, there will be problems >: (
When we use the pistol off hanf 5, makes the blinding aoe field, we like to jump through it alot, you may think I am crazy but when you see them cast that, stand in it. They will heartseeker into you revealing themselves for 3 seconds. When you see them cast it, an alternative is to quickly Use Doom so that way you made them waste half of their initiative, stakitten works well too. And save you DS, use it to eat backstab damage. Tainted shackles works well too now hope I helped
Without S/D it’s not easy 1v1. I always figured that the cost of our amazing ability to disengage was that we can’t stand toe-to-toe with several builds. It honestly doesn’t bother me that some tanks are too tanky for thieves to take down solo. However, maybe I’ve just run into a string of bad ele’s in spvp lately but I’ve taken them down fairly easily with d/p + sb 10/30/0/0/30.
There’s always Jumper’s s/d build if you can’t stand walking away from tanks
Like I said, Jumper’s build is stellar for DD eles…in PvP, me personally wouldn’t be caught dead (literally) with that build in WvW since its mostly a skirmisher build.
But you are right, I have used it on ele, guardians even and it works very well.
I would think Norn-Human Sylvari-Human would probably be the most seen example of an interspecial relationship, moreso the latter since sylvari don’t have any special requirements i.e. being able to wrestle a bear and all that jazz.
I dont know about you, I don’t even run into roaming D/D ele much anymore. These days, I see a lot of thieves, mesmers, and occassionally a warrior or guardian.
D/D ele went out of style after S/D got the buff it needed to be a hard counter to it.
S/D works wonders on DD eles, I used it in pvp to test it out, problem is, I don’t always have a sword equipped :p
Honestly it seems to me like they are. I’m a backstab balanced thief and the amount of effort I need to use to bring down a DD ele usually ends up in vain. Their advantage is that they don’t need a target, ironically the dagger set gives them a on of aoe which negates stealth, and the water attunement lets them heal without their healing skill. One would burst them down after the water is used but at the same time this is when the DD ele is at their most dangerous as well. Twice today I had to disengage because I had to use my utilities way too close to each other, cleverly saving the shadow refuge as a final trump card. Thieves Guild does help for the extra burst but forget about it if they haven’t used water yet :p I’m not even going to go into the boons, how do you guys handle these players? Usually I just avoid combat with them, but today I was forced into a fight, which I could’ve ran from but I wanted to see if I could do something.
Well since no one else answered, my pvp build is my pve and wvw and dungeon build, the typical 0/30/30/10/0, it works once you know how to use it, I recommend SB for dungeons btw, its best to stay back during alotta the fights
Curious, did you ask ppl in Lions Arch for advice a couple minutes ago? In Tarnished Coast?
That hes getting 115-120 ticks on his bleeds when you need about 1600 condi damage for that… sorry but impossible….
I was wondering this as well….I may not have 100% max gear yet but im still pretty decked out in terms of condition and my bleeds only tick for 97 granted they spew out of the target.
I’m not sure what you mean.
He means since you dont use AA’s when your CD skills are on CD, do you just stand there and not use the auto attack until your other skills are back online?
Is a Thief really complaining about another profession’s burst right now?
Let me enjoy this. Go on, continue.
He isn’t complaining, everyone thinks that when something is posted about their class that isn’t advice on how to do better, it’s a complaint. Since I main a thief and alt a necromancer idk but from the start I could feel his emotion was more so of awe and surprise. If I were in his shoes I’d be surprised by being bursted down by a necromancer. I think you guys are missing the point, you’re making fun of a thief for “complaining” about burst when you’re only proving his point, thieves are known for their burst, not necros, so when a necro bursts you down it’s like a, “uhh what just happened?” Not a OMG NERF. That outta the way what is this attrition you guys throw around what does that mean ? :p
Mesmers are currently besides Elementalisst the only class, which can easily tank and spank against mulpple players and survive these situations for long time while watching you from far away dieing from the DoT condition spam, if you can’t quickly remove them and even by killing them quickly, you instantly get thrpough killign them healing conditions instantly back, as killing their clones leaves oftenly, if they skilled it a randomous condition, or their let them home in to you by using their shatter skills to CC you, while they have from far range enough tiem to quickly spam new clones to keep you busy with them.
Dude, do you realise that you just wrote a paragraph that consists of exactly 1 sentence? Really, if that’s the way you fight against mesmers, it’s no suprise it’s confusing.
The Declaration of Independence was one sentence and that was much longer.
I don’t get it
Neither do I, is that good or bad?
Mouth looks like a mailbox, now look again
Main problem here is that thieves suck underwater and we know it, so good luck actually finding us in water.
Yeah didnt notice i too busy smiling at the fact that I wasnt dying in .3 seconds due to only having 1/3rd hp
If you are a DD ele then you automatically have the advantage with your boat load of AOE’s. You dont even need to target the thief directly just go through your rotation.
Thief isn’t shock and awe. Thief is a precision strike. (Pun may or may not be intended).
I think you answered your own questions when you said “boatload of snares”. Depending on his stunbreaker(s) + cooldown(s), that will typically do it.
You know what you dont see in those 1vX thief leet vids that happens 95% of the time to us? The massive amount of CC’s we get
Its graphic dont worry.
So its not just me? Thank the Tree. I thought my internet was slow. My skills and weapon swap are sometimes on a 3 second delay
Played hours yesterday in sPvP with flame sigils, didn’t even happen a single time. If it’s bugged, it’s in PvE/WvW only.
Yeah I haven’t had it happen in PvP….yet
its not the flame blast its the aoe damage it does, it happens when you stealth and the aoe or other attack with hit shortly after, does it with the stealth on steal, and doing damage and poisoning at the same time.
happens every now and then with attacking sigils, nothing you can do about but deal with it.
If this was always this way then I am baffled since I have never had this problem. Im traited for a crit out of stealth so essentially BS has a 30% fire blast chance so regardless Im going to be revealed, but now I see zerg surfing this can get you killed with cloak and daggering your way through. Even still Ive never had this happen before.
does this affect sigil of air as well?
I am unsure of this, i was hoping someone could try or someone had an issue with it as well
I had backstabbed butt
Giggedy
changed it :p
I was in Lornar’s Pass fighting Jotuns when I CnD’d and I got revealed shortly after. I thought I had backstabbed but his wasn’t the case since I checked my combat log and only saw a cloak and dagger and flame blast. So to test it, I CnD again off of a Jotun and sure enough the cloak and dagger made a flame blast which then revealed me. Is anyone getting this? This has never happened before :s if air sigil does the same thing now Im mad

Is a Raid pretty much a big dungeon with more ppl?Yes. That is pretty much the rough definition. Raids have been composed of 8-100+ players, depending on the game you are playing. Most raids these days in MMOs hover between 8 – 20 people.
Ah okay. thanks

Is a Raid pretty much a big dungeon with more ppl?
It is getting me aggravated actually, my rhythm is all trash when I switch to pvp and its easier to die since evryone is on equal footing
(edited by RedSpectrum.1975)
Thanks for the advice guys
For those that have necromancers that utilize fear, do you burst out all of your fear attacks at once for one long fear or do you space them out?
I love it I also love 15 characters :p
People always confuse NEED and WANT …..why?
That isn’t even the problem.
The problem is that someone could have started farming coffers since the second Dragon Bash started and never stopped playing the game for a second until right this second, and still never get a weapon ticket.
Someone could blow (hypothetically, I hope no one actually does) thousands upon thousands of dollars on Rich Coffers, and not get a ticket. The potential amount of gametime and farming required could eclipse the amount of time it would take to make a Legendary and someone could still not get a ticket.
It’s not even a matter of people whining over wanting things, RNG is just a horrible idea since it’s entirely possible people could get shafted like this, and I dare anyone to say that it’s a great idea.
You can have RNG in this game, but only if there’s some sort of way to definitely work towards the rewards, and no, I don’t mean something insane like one billion Zhaitaffy.
Which, with the amount of chests ive farmed and opened, could easily afford >:(
Whats tmrw’s patch?
being a nub right nowA big one, the start of the Sky Pirates content and a major skill update.
Ah that thx
Whats tmrw’s patch?
being a nub right now
Well making a weapon rack bleed is kind of….unreal?
I wish thieves and mesmers said something going into stealth like “Now you see me….!”
I don’t know what they intended but it is supposed to give 2s of stealth with each “pulse” according to the description and currently it doesn’t do that, it gives you nothing until the last pulse then it gives all the previous pulses at once.
Not true, go into a shadow refuge a bit after it has been cast so youre in it for like 2 seconds, watch how fast the stealth wares away versus being in there the whole 5 seconds
That I am unsure of :/
And Zepidel has a point, stick with a little group in WvW if you have no escape tricks. A GC thief’s main fear are other thieves actully since we burst them down as fast as they burst down everyone else. You have a thief in your party but not even just thieves, anyone can be a big help when being ganked.
Well the thing about GC’s is what damage they do to you, can pretty much be done to them. Thats why the thieves gank you to get the first hit in, otherwise they are screwed. I can see how it can be frustrating, I have had me fair share of ganks. But it is what it is just be wary and ready.
I understand that they’re squishy. I’ve seen that argument used a lot. Sadly the amount of stealths (which can be countered unless you wildly), evades, and shortbow utility makes up for their lack of stats in the tanky area. I’ve seen thieves geared like this escape zergs very easily.
Believe it or not, idk if you have a thief or not, but if they are traited for massive spike damage, they dont reap the benefits of stealth like other thieves, they just use it to get away. But yeah, when they are outnumbered they run because they mostly pop assassins signet, a venom then cloak and dagger and backstab, wasting most of thier utility on one person. I cant really give advice on how to fight them because they always try to get the first hit on you, but as an engi dont you have elixir s or something that makes you invuln? That would allow you to escape the main burst: backstab.
It should say that you are offline to that person, making it unable for them to whisper you

I use steal almost every time it’s available.
Not me, when fighting another thief I try to save it for when they are down, or to just plain get hair. I love having ice shard stab too. Its one of the harder bundles to land but what some dont know is that if you have a bundle (ice shard) and steal is off CD, you can dbl tap steal so that way you port AND land the stab
Someone is making a ton of money lol. Beats farming:p
Are you missing due to them evading? Or being blinded? because other than that it takes a bit of practice. You can NOT CnD if you don’t use mouse turn plain and simple btw. Sometimes iif they are behind you you can quickly swivel the mouse around to tag them with it, but it missing is common, just learn to think fast to compensate for the potential punishment that comes next.
It doesn’t? Huh I don’t know why I thought it deflected, my bad
