i want to thank everyone who replied for their encouragement and nice words, they sparked a courage i havent experienced thus far (im getting carried away) and i pugged my way through 30 fractals the last 2 days. for some reason im always happy if we can fight mai trin, since sandys mesmer solo from a while ago always made me long for this.
zui, thank you for this opportunity, i already partly watched your arah educational tour and i’m really looking forward to this:>
meh, maybe this sounds a bit over-the-top but i’m in a really good mood since im seeing the fractals, ive been reading about at wethospus site, in action.
now i have a new concept: – read guide -> apply in pug – judging from the experience reread certain passages (or even just one), enemy skills/animations and immediately apply again ingame, this way i constantly can see that im getting better at a certain thing, even if its one encounter per run.
(maybe im taking this too serious, but im always passionate about what i do)

There’s nothing wrong with this as long as you have shaman selected as a target.

If you have him selected as a target then each successive skill used will remove a stack off of his shield.

This is why I, for example, will aim my ice storms/meteor showers in the areas with the biggest concentration of elementals.

I will just assume the team you had was really bad either way and probably didn’t have shaman selected. Pugs blow.

I should probably add to my above post that although I do have a Ascended Necromancer. It is is Zojja, (berserker), with Scholar runes. And I do not run her in any organized group content, (being Dungeons and Fractals with very few exceptions). I do however run them solo in all sorts of things. (yes “them” as I have 4 of them)

Necromancer Used to have a nich in high level fractals. Meaning high as in 70 plus. But those days are currently gone. Necromancer Does fine in the Damage department, On par with several other classes. But thats the catch. Damage is the only thing they bring worth mentioning. But that is a conversation that is completely off topic from what we have here.

If you are planning on having to do alot of Pick up Groups. I would recomend against Ascending a Necro. I did mine early on and for my own personal gratification.

If you have a regular group that you run with, via guildies and friends that is an entirely different beast. If everyone is having a good time with it who is to tell you otherwise.

Ascended Gear is a long term process and goal. and I personaly think it is worth it. particularly now since Arena Net has come out and announced that there will never be a higher tier of Gear.

If you want it Fast. it will be expensive.
If you want it cheap. It will take some time.
And its only “grindy” if you make it so. The only thing I have ever “grinded” in this game was some levels for characters, and some PvP levels. Everything Else I got just by playing.

I have a Necromancer in Full Ascended that costed me exactly 0 in game gold barring the regent for the crafting.

I have enough AR on trinkets alone to run level 49. costed me 0 in game gold barring of course the regents to combine the infusions.

I run Fractal 49’s in Exotic Gear and Ascended trinkets.

I run 50’s on either thief, Guardian or Warrior because they have the ascended weapons that have the last 10 agony resist infusions in them. that again costed me 0 in game gold barring the regents.

I have spent thousands of gold on Friends and Guildies for them to be able to get gear and come play to have fun.

and I have converted exactly 0 gems to gold.

I have a full time Job as a Chef. I play late at night for a few hours because there is little else to do at 3 am. I pugged my way to fractal 50.

This Game is not a job. But like my real job, I like to try and be good at it.

If you want to get to Fractal Level 50. thats awesome.

it WILL take effort.

because of downscaling, you will only reap the benifits of ascended in a handfull of places currently. Being Fractals, Arah, Cursed shore, World vs World, Southsun, Drytop and silverwastes. Basically all of the level 80 zones.

So outside of personal gratification it is pointless to have for a large portion of the Game and player base.

something to think about though….

ohh and you do not need Ascended for HIgh level fractals. I run 50’s in Exotic armor.

Just thinking about it, how would they even design challenging content without proper players to test it out? And I have not heard of any decent player they consulted for content creation.

grouch needs to have the Tourney broadcasted at Arena net HQ. and a required watch.

with the notion of. "these are the people you need to challenge. "

Speaking of silverwastes, I was doing one big boss thing (starts with a small orange aoe circle to push melee’s back and instantly follows with a large to pull ranged people in) in a zerg of 35 players. Overall dps was 55k, of which I personally contributed roughly 5k…
36 players doing the dps of 11 properly equipped ones, and the boss still died with like 1:40 on the timer left. Timer should be 1 minute instead of 5 minutes. Or maybe 1:30 for to allow for well equipped bads. But nomad ranging gs mesmers should just not be allowed…

that is a disturbing set of numbers.

Hearts or Edge of The Mists?

purely personal experience.

2 of the last characters I leveled up I did both way. One was done entirely in Edge of the Mist, another entirely map completion.

class was Necromancer.
Used a Level 20 Scroll.
Only booster active was a Birthday booster
Reached 80 on both before the booster ran out.

So,
If you are looking for a fast beat level set up with intentions of getting to 80 fast. I would recommend when you log into your new thing. head straight to Edge of the mists, and see if there is a semi intelligent group running. If so, run there till it ends or you get bored. If there is not a group running or you have succeeded in boring yourself. then grab yourself a map and run it.

Suggestion though.
If you plan on doing WvW. I would suggest spending more time in Edge than normal maps. Just so you have a better idea of how your class plays in that environment. If you do not intent to use them for WvW for the time being. I would spend more time on the regular maps so you have a better understanding on how to play it there.

No, what they need to have is encounter mechanics where these things are useful and NERF Guardian skills so that threats to berserker builds are not trivialized.

If you nerf Guardian Skills in such a way you would wash out the class from every game mode. and make it a useless class.

The problem is berserker builds can completely eliminate their weaknesses, whereas other stat builds can never get rid of their weakness (lower dps/clearing time). And there’s never a time in any encounter where the turning point of a fight is whether you have enough of a defensive stat or built durable.

Beserker is a gear stat not a build. A Dungeon DpS build takes all the needed suppport and defense first for the chosen content and then goes from there. and that turning point in the fight is the moment you engage and is constantly reassessed each moment and skill use.

If anything can be done by the berserker (and let’s be honest, any highest damage toon assuming in the distant future condi builds did the highest damage), then what’s the point of building for toughness or healing power stats?

There’s a reason why cleric, shaman stats are useless in PvE, as are most healing traits. You really can’t build for any role but damage since damage is all you need. The guardian and ele classes in turn bring all the team defense you could possibly need.

PvE scene in this game is dead compared to other MMO’s because there’s really no specialization or team synergy aspect besides bringing the classes that fart boons (guardian, warrior, ele) and stacking to abuse bad mob AI/boss attack design.

PvE in Gw2 is alive and very well. not sure why you would think other wise.

GW1 sure had bodyblock balling up and aoe, but things like interrupts were important and the variety of viable builds in PvE endgame were far more varied than GW2. In GW2 you just burst crap down while boons and dodges keep you alive.

Interrupts and Control in general are widely and frequently used. Just not always merited as there is not always anything worth interrupting. but that is a different conversation all together. Comparing GW1 and GW2 is just difficult. 2 different games. that just happen to share the same lore and Name.

And there are scenarios in which it’s not even skill based, just damage. Look at ascalonian fractal. The things hit you immediately for 5-6k+ autoattacks, each soldier at once. There’s no such thing as skillfully dodging all that damage. It’s about balling them up and killing them before they kill you.

Try using Guardian and Thief support abilities. namely Blind. I, and many others dodge and negate that damage all the time.


What I have gotten out of this thread….

its not about gameplay, or Skill or even what Armor Stat is better.

People want their shiney things and are miffed that skilled players can get it faster than them.

Just some of my own personal experience with CpC in WvW from awhile back.

I appreciate the thought I think about the buffs to it. but I tend to agree with the its just not quite bar worthy. I would have it around for a bit on my Zerg baller and just more or less time it with some staff 4 stuff. so i could not only keep up the poison time but transfer some weakness as well. I just never really felt like it was worth it. When I go full tilt well bomber I would rather take well of Power for either my personal defense or as a buff to the hammer train.

Personal opinion:
CpC would see more use if it was a projectile destruction. OR add more conditions to it. Such as torment and bleeding in addition to the poison and weakness.

Regardless good posts on it it looks to be like CpC may be more playstyle preference. if you can use it to your liking it seems to not be all terrible now. but if it does not fit in with what you need there is no shame in not taking it.

We were maybe intentionally vague when we didn’t talk about what types of content you’re going to experience specifically in the jungle, but the most important messages we want people to take from today are that you’re going to be able to explore a new area, and we know that Guild Wars 2 needs more challenging encounters and more challenging group encounters, and it needs extremely challenging encounters for groups to build up to and defeat. We’re going to be providing all of that with our Heart of Thorns experience.

Not sure if we should be happy that Necros are not on the daily rotation, or shouldn’t be happy. I’ve already seen teams with 4 rangers, engies and so on. Imagine 4 terrormancers in the same team.

short ish answer:

Open world PvE: non issue

Organized group Content (dungeons and Fractals) : 7 of the 8 classes are in the Meta.

WvW Large scale: GWEN is meta with the rest of the classes playing outliers.

WvW Small scale: non issue, just depends on how tight your team is if you have or want one.

PvP Competitive Tourney Scene is Elementalist, Engineer and Warrior are winning tourneys. Nich roles and outliers with everyone else.

PvP non tourney scene: non issue.

having a “stickied” option would be kind of cool. especially for things like the copper fed or weapons that youa re rotating out of during a run.

what I personally do that may help you until something else. comes along. I put an invisible bag on my bottom slot. the first slot of that bag is designated to my copper fed. all of my weapons and the like are in that bag as well so i do not salvage them or what have you. everything above that bag is collected loot and salvageable. When i hit “compact” it will go from the slot right before my copper fed and “up”

it works for me (shrug)

Alternatively you can also do something similar with it being in the top. and just put your copper fed on the “last” slot. so it will only compact up to that point. Everything “below” it is whatever.

General Consensus on Condition Damage?

I saw that. it’s a good read, but I think the guy underestimates the importance of the cap. I feel that the cap punishes condition damage players for grouping up – which feels silly in an MMO.

its not the cap that is the problem.

fully buffed and tossing max conditions out. you are still doing around 30 percent less Damage than power.

So, if you remove the cap the build would have to be able to get to, and maintain something to the tune of 40 some odd bleed stacks, etc. JUST to be able to match a power builds output.

Personally, I think that allowing Vulnerability to add its effects to condition damage would be the best way to go. It would put Condition damage at least on par with power while still maintaining the the ramp up time and over time effect of how a condition build is supposed to work.

Its the concept of “removal” vs “corruption”

Mesmer has a plethora of skills that will strip and remove boons. as in they will make them go away.

Necromancer “corrupts” them.

As Spoj Said, in a PvE setting Mesmer trumps as the auto attack among other things will be perpetually removing boons. Where as Necromancer is locked behind long cool downs or in some cases off kilter skills. they are balanced like that in that the boons are now corrupted and are conditions instead.

Simply Put,
Mesmer will strip your boons and they are gone.
Necromancer will take your boons and then do damage with them.

In a PvP setting the Necromancer is better for boon hate ( in “my” opinion). Because after corruption those conditions will do damage. even if the opponent reapplies said boons. the conditions are still there and working.

in the grand scheme of it all though they BOTH work well for that type of thing. Its a matter of what you prefer to play, and what your team may need etc. And to be fair, there are several Necro mains that play Mesmer as well.

I also need to thank Amir for calling me out as a fool.

In the interest of this discussion.

Those that know a lot more than I do. And a lot of you know a heck of a lot more than I do. Can you explain to me and to the unwashed masses why these changes would work or not. I personally cannot see them beyond them being changes for the sake of change. Now I know I am missing something, could you explain it to me?

I Play Necromancer In PvP. The proposed changes to the Necro skills seem redundant. As landing Dark Path is often tricky at best. And I already have many knowledgeable opponents dodging marks.

I don’t play Elementalist, Or Engineer. I am just not seeing how any of these alterations would change how I play against them?

So if you would be so kind could you educate the dungeon running PvE scrub.
