I tend to get more crowbars than I need. I have over 100 in my inventory right now. One day I just ran through looking for the chests to open with only doing the occasional event and still had a lot left over. I have always thought we get way more crowbars than any other keys like acid or exalted. When I play the metas in VB I usually just focus on doing the events without running around too much looking for the crates to open. I usually just do them for the exp to level up my masteries and open a chest as I find them.

Yeah, seriously. I went on a cargo spree, thinking “i’ll do events on the way, but looking for cargo”.

Go for about an hour, look inside my inventory to see how many crowbars I have. Still over 100…

….wut?

I dunno about anyone else, but I am more concerned about what “lesson” was learned, I mean there are all kinds of things players hated and loved about HoT, but as far as I could tell, there nothing really universal (beyond say the Character Slot) where if you looked at community reactions, you could point a finger at and say “That was our mistake”.

Everything was met with some group loving or hating it, it all depended on who you asked.

I think the lessons learned were from the april patch. It did fix a good chunk of the problems from HoT. So now they need to take what they did right in that patch and apply it to further expansions and updates

So? It’s far more sad, that two years later, and after dozens of pithy as-little-work-as-possible attempts to fix this problem, that this thread is just as applicable as it ever was.

No its not. People run conditions. People run healing with druids. People get someone with a lot of toughness for raids.

I’ve had that on several of those quests and also on the “rescue 10 injured peeps” quest. In the latter I’ve been in a group that has rescued, protected and escorted 8 of the 10 then run to help the ones coming from the other side but not got there in time to engage any mobs. By the time the counter gets to 10/10 I’m flagged as inactive. Once you’ve tagged a couple of the quest mobs it really should keep you flagged as active for as long as you are in orange event circle.

And, yeah, a couple of times I’ve been flagged as inactive whilst standing around waiting for the rather lengthy dialogue to end. I get that they want to discourage “tag and run” but there should never be cases where legitimate participants go unrewarded. At the very least they should extend the inactive timer a little.

Same thing happened to me

Pick one elite spec alone to play

Reaper killed warrior for me.

If I want to base my spec on pure damage, a few trait swaps and I’m a power reaper. Swap gear and traits again, condition reaper. Another swap, tank (though the other two, your tanky anyway). I think the only spec you cant do well with the reaper specialization, is buff support. As a reaper, you’re pretty selfish with boons.

But you get an auto attack that hits in a wide arc, a short CD engage that also stops projectiles AND blinds, a stability/fear, a large size AoE that deals decent damage plus poisons, and a large stun.

You get shouts that are all almost all instantaneous, one being an AoE stun, damage reduction, boon corruption, and all can heal you.

And heck, I know its not meta, but I even use the GS because of the pull and AoE dmg/blind. I may weapon swap once their on CD, but its still nice to have.

But yeah, I feel reaper is the best specialization they did this expansion

I enjoy it. It is a nice change of pace when I don’t feel like putting in much effort into what I am doing.

Fair enough. It’s a Zen thing; I don’t think you literally enjoy pressing F . I still think any material price crashing is a good thing.

Couple things. First the act is relaxing especialy when you pop on a video on a second monitor or something. Secondly you probably wouldn’t be thinking price crashes are a good thing if every mat in the game was worthless cause then you wouldn’t make any money.

And also it was hardly a crash, more of a decline.

In all seriousness, most likely the people who watched the video will do it for a bit, then move on and not care anymore, because its boring, and they’ll see they aren’t making as much gold as the video says because….more people are doing it too. Thus further driving them away to keep doing it.

So think of it as a fad. People are jumping on the bus now, but its most likely not going to last and the market will balance out again

After reading through 6 pages of text, I fail to see why this had to be turned into a prestige item so rare and expensive as to be pretty much unobtainable.

Going by the logic of the game’s UI itself, this should be a checkbox, like other armour slots have, pure and simple.

Imagine having to pay 2300g for the ability to hide your guardian’s gloves , for example, then having to pay the same for your mesmer’s shoulder piece, only to find that it’s so rare, there isn’t even a single piece for sale.

This should be about having the ability to hide your foot slot armour piece, not turn it into an actual piece, with all the impracticalities that this brings.

…and then adding a drop rate this low.

It actually feels mean spirited in a way.

Not cool Anet, not cool.

Its funny you mention paying to hide an article of clothing. SWTOR does this….for real cash…and its disgusting

Change to Talents and weapons

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serophous.9085

Serophous.9085

This is sorta a big change, but one that should be considered and could help with build diversity.

Basically, lump weapons into categories rather than just be weapons. In other words, (these being examples and open to change),

  • Slashing (Axes, Greatswords, Swords, etc)
  • Piercing (range weapons)
  • Bludgeoning (maces, hammers, staves, scepters)
  • Off-hand (foci, warhorns, shields, etc).

Off-hand I would most likely change the name, since you can have off-hand swords, axes, pistols, daggers too. To cause less confusion.

And yes I know, for the casters this would seem weird (scepter really being an outlier and I just tossed it into bludgeoning, another category may be needed), but if you are a mesmer for instance using a Greatsword, well, its still a slashing weapon.

The whole point of this is to open up and let other weapons get some use. Now instead of only getting might on crit with a greatsword, now its might on crit with any slashing weapon. Example for warriors, now gain might with an axe, or a sword. For Example for thieves, instead of crippling with a crit using a pistol or harpoon, dealing a crit with a piercing weapon cripples the target, so throw in shortbows.

Proposal regarding Core Classes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serophous.9085

Serophous.9085

I agree with the idea that the old tree lines should be given the Specialization treatment, as in, when you select this tree, you get some auto unlocks.

Lets take warrior for example and berserker since you used it. By taking it, you unlock torch (note, something like unlocking a new weapon set SHOULDN’T be tied to reworking the old trait trees! Leave all of original weapons as is! Nor with abilities as Berserker gets the rage ones. Everything stays unlocked as is in the core game!).

But what you also unlock is a secondary ability tied to adrenaline and changing how the burst skill functions in that state. Neat. Now, lets apply that thought process to the old trait lines.

Take Discipline for example. When you take it, that first minor gives you multiple things, like fast hands immediately, Banners last longer, or have reduced cast time, etc.

Or even take Arms for example, where weilding a weapon modifies the attacks somehow.

Sure, some of the stuff could be just minor traits being squeezed into one one chosen, but at least that would also open up the traitlines then for some more interesting minors or even majors, instead of just “increase damage by 10%”

Patch for the 19th

Serophous.9085

Not telling us much and then delivering a solid update that makes people happy (or as happy as they can be after the Legendary Weapons news) does a lot to convince people to be excited for future updates.

Not telling us much and then delivering a poor update would be somewhat worse. Guess we’ll find out soon. It would not surprise me if they make a change that totally break WvW, lol.

It’s certainly a dicey situation to be in but I think it’s the right call.

A poor update will be a poor update no matter what. Building up expectations will just lead to people falling harder.

I’m actually more optimistic about this update than I have been about many others before. It kind of reminds me of the old GW1 balance patches that would change things greatly with little to no warning but then would include explanations as to why X and Y happened.

Anet’s biggest sin isn’t them not telling us enough before hand, it’s them not explaining why we got what we got afterwards.

It sounds like that might be what is going to happen tomorrow with the Reddit chat which will most likely happen sometime after or right as the patch drops.

Or maybe it will be a complete bomb and I’ll take another 3+ month break like I did in January. Who knows lol…

About the thought process and explaining, yeah more of that would be nice. Riot just released a short blog explaining how they classify champs and their rolls, and why. While short, it was interesting to read.

I wish anet would do more with that so we can get a better understanding of where they are coming from

Patch for the 19th

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serophous.9085

It’s part of a larger policy shift, which is simply “less talk, more action.” Fewer promises and less hype, more deliverables.

While everything has already been finalized for the release and been through testing, so there’s (almost) no chance of anything they’d put in previews a week in advance being pulled, I think the silence is just part of their larger change in approach. I’m not in love with it, because I like preview posts, but I’m cautiously optimistic about their renewed focus.

The problem is, in the beginning, there was less talk, and less action. And I’m hoping they don’t go back to that.

Honestly, I’m hoping this patch delivers, because with SAB going, I might as well take a hiatus too

HoT was not "half done" and my 3 reasons why

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Serophous.9085

Serophous.9085

1. Raiding was not available at launch. I don’t think it would be a good idea to delay the entire expansion one month to have this bundled in with HoT at launch, but it is one of the core new game systems that really should have been ready to play.

I think it could have been ready but they delayed it to give people a grace period to earn the masteries needed. Try fighting Gorseval without gliding/updrafts … (at a guess. I have not seen that boss. Could be doable without?). At least they did state that as a reason at the time.

I believe one of the biggest reasons for the Raid delay was that the final beta, with access to raiding, had near-disastrously game breaking bugs with the squad interface which is required for raids. they had to turn it off, and raiding, within hours of the start of the beta test and I dont believe it got turned on before the beta ended. as such there was obviously some major unexpected issues that needed to be fixed to be able to release the raids, and as such it was delayed more than intended from the HoT release schedule.

The thing is, people were pointing out a lot of problems in the beta, that seemed to go ignored, or show the xpac was being too rushed.

The raid and squad feature was just one, but the talks of professions being too OP now in some parts, or way too weak, were posted as well. Then there was the talent unlocks. I was fine with not having them unlocked right away, but then the method and amount you needed to get everything was just too much.

I think the worse part was, in that beta, we were told “you won’t have access to everything, some stuff is being kept secret!”

Sure, ok. I buy that. We were stuck to one zone, and apparently not all the events were active, only one path in the story, yada yada. Sure.

But then when I played the release…I didn’t see anything new, other than the new zones. The entry zone stayed pretty much the same, no big surprises. It was just….unsatisfying…

Btw, remember when you were going to have choices in the story now that would have big impacts later on? Boy did that die after the first scene (and the first scene it didn’t matter).

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Serophous.9085

Its barely useful, even in HoT. Until you learn the mob patterns in HoT, stack some toughness. After that, back to full glasscannon.

In larger scale events though (which many of the HoT maps are), you’re gonna get one shotted either way, no matter what your toughness is against a high scaled boss from so many people being around.

ie. you have toughness, someone does not. You both have 2300 Hp each.
Boss hits you both for 2500 damage, you take 2400 because of toughness, the other guy takes the full 2500.

You’re both still down.

The ONLY main thing for toughness right now, I believe, is dictating who is the tank in raids

Bog Otter's take on Legendary Suspension.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serophous.9085

Serophous.9085

It doesn’t matter or not if Anet has the numbers. What matters are the numbers Anet gave us which is 16 new legendaries hidden behind another important number which was 50 dollars minimum U.S. currency for the expansion.

Besides Anet already knew long before HoT the numbers of people with legendaries and decided to do this anyway. Now that HoT hasn’t had the reception they thought now they are rushing another expac at the expense of promised HoT features.

Exactly. Anet is doing what they think is best for the good of the game, not the good of what is likely a very small percentage of the player base. It’s a business decision. They have as much responsibility to the majority than the do to any minority, no matter what was printed on the box.

But isn’t that what they’ve been doing all along — starting with ascended gear back in November of 2012 and on through to the NPE and the trait system revamp(s) and now this mess with HoT — doing what they think is best for the good of the game?

Isn’t their ‘doing what they think is best for the good of the game’ the very thing that has brought us to this latest mess in a long line of messes?

I can’t help but think that they may be in need of some new thinkers.

Well, the ascended gear was a PR nightmare. First it was said it was added cause exotic was acquired too quickly so ascended introduced. Then (I can be corrected on this if wrong) they started saying it was planned all along and never made it into the beta(?).

And lets not forget the loot drop nerf and DR that occured in that patch too. That huge thread was basically ignored for months on end, till around December a French Anet Forum moderator said one small blip about looking into it, before going dark again. Then after more lengthy discussion, finally got the patch that gave us chests for boss events. I still wish I should’ve screen shotted the stack of skulls I got farming cursed shore.

On to LS 1 which they wanted to stick by a living world, where events will scar the world and only happen for a short period of time, then be gone forever. Players apparently didn’t like that type of living, breathing, world, and while it had memorable moments and some fun events, not being able to do then again didn’t go over well.

Then players wanted the skill capture system back from GW1 (really, looking back, it seems we just wanted new skills in general and offering the old way to get them). Anet took it in a different direction, and went with traits, giving no base traits to work with until you unlocked them all, and new traits offered at end game. Yeah, it sucked.

The NPE wasn’t that bad. I agree some vendors disappearing and removing some events were a step in the wrong direction though because “new players too confused” was such a horrible reason. If anything, if I was a new player and found this out, I would feel insulted.

Then we go onto the trait revamp v2, and its better than what we had, but some classes trait lines are in horrible shape, and with the removal of some traits (useless ones, yet we still have the fall damage ones because they are so unique) and merging of others, it still feels like they are more limited.

And now we have Hot…

Bog Otter's take on Legendary Suspension.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Serophous.9085

Serophous.9085

“Suspended indefinitely” means we have no clue when or if we can get back to them. Because if MO said “we’ve stopped development for now” the next question from the masses is “for how long”.

Bog Otter is one of the Twitch streamers/YouTube video creaters they tap to do the pre and post show stream for various ANet events. He’s been covering the game from early beta and had worked as a Games Vlogger for what is now defunct game sites including hosting a weekly show on GW2 many years ago. This gives you a bit of background on the man.

Now since he’s considered “chummy” with ANet by those who never found anything positive to say about GW2, many simply dismiss him as a ANet “stooge”. He’s not but he is a glass half full kind of guy which annoys many.

The point he was making with the numbers that he admit he pulled out of the ether is ANet didn’t pick the new legendary development to stop out of a hat or a dart against a wall. They, ANet have the metrics to see if there were enough players taking advantage of the precursor collections in the last roughly six months to see if this was a good use of personal that could be better used on parts of the game that more players interact with. Period. Which is logically sound if ANet is trying to return the game to it’s former days of relatively routine content updates. Also show some long needed attention to WvW. Sorry I think PvP has gotten enough love for now, besides quarterly balancing to make try and make core professions relevant again in PvP.

But those enraged aren’t interested in discussing this or hearing someone with a bit more positive spin on it. Vocal members of the GW2 community want to be outraged, even if they never had any intention of getting a new legendary.

I see where he is coming from in his idea on how anet picked and chose that team. The problem is, its not sound data if they went by that idea.

Right now, I don’t own a single legendary, the first one I am actually going for was the fractal backpack, which I have no idea when I’ll get it, but I don’t own a weapon. Not because I don’t want to go through the process, but because none of them appeal to me in looks. So instead, I kept holding out, looking forward to the NEW legendaries coming out, which isn’t going to happen till everything else is sorted.

So again, I never took advantage of the precursor system because, there was really nothing I wanted yet (other than back piece), and I’m disappointed because now I have to wait to unknown time before I may even go for a legendary weapon.

In retrospect, knowing now the issues they were having finishing content for this expansion, it suddenly makes a lot more sense why they were in such a hurry to get people to buy it before they had to admit how little was in it.

I did think that they rather exaggerated some aspects of their content before release. For instance, I didn’t find the maps to be quite what it sounded like it was going to be. Four maps, all three levels. In reality, the only map that felt truly three levels to me was VB. And even then, the canopy level was minimal because it was mostly air and empty space. Most of the maps, at best, feel like two levels to me or maybe more like one and a half levels.

Anyway, HoT always felt like a very small expansion or a large content update to me. I figure the next expansion will be similar in size or smaller since they won’t have all the “systems” to add that they added with HoT since they’re already implemented.

VB – 3 layers, but you’ll spend 70% of the time on just the 2 lower ones

Basin – Only Topmost layer is at the entrance from VB, then some small spots(maybe?) around the rest of the map. The lowest layer is under the city, which isn’t that big compared to the rest of the map.

Tangled Depths – Yes, up to 4 layers. Pretty much fits what they talked about.

Dragon’s stand – one layer, with some underground caves based on events. Other than that, a dead zone unless you are doing the meta.

You forgot a few other things:

1. Traits system – more condensed and limiting than it’s previous two version, it seems they just mainly took multiple traits in a line and condensed them or removed. The problem is, from their previous versions and moving traits around between lines, some classes are really screwed up and forced to take lines just for one trait only, the rest being worthless (look at Guardian and Warrior). Especially with the introduction of specializations, the base traitlines need a new pass on what is good, and what belongs where.

2. Skills – So far it seems the only new skills coming from now on are from specializations themselves, which quite frankly, sucks. I understand the need for balance, But in all honestly, the build diversity in the game just stinks.

3. Weapons – weapons themselves have become stale and boring, especially when you find out that only a few are actually good, because traits effect them well. This ties into what’s stated above. Not enough traits apply to all of a classes weapons, making them viable.

But then there are the weapons skills, which basically leads to really predicable game play. You know what attacks that other guy using the same weapon and profession as you is gonna do, there is no difference. I rather see us finally be able to customize are weapon skills to fight.

4. The mastery system – no idea when new masteries are going to be added, or how, etc. Not to mention some earlier talked about apparently were cut that sounded good (the one that lets you deal more damage to mordrem for example).

6 months of work suggests a lot of work should have been done. Based on the idea that 1 takes 1 month of work (as quoted in guide chat), they should have been able to release 1 every 4-6 weeks fairly easy.

I mean they seriously didn’t work on ALL of them at once, thus leaving them all just half complete….. right?

It sounds to me as if they felt they had a system down where they could quickly lay down the framework of the quest/collection, and then fill it in to complete it.

When the first wave hit, it became clear that this did NOT work as expected, as seen by all the problems and bugs. I’m guessing that their system had to be scrapped, and everything pretty much done from scratch each time. The “one month” estimate went right out the window. I’m guessing that another part of the delay on the shortbow was them trying to salvage the system they had, and realizing that it needs to be reworked from the ground up to avoid making another mess.

This is sorta another problem I have. HoT basically introduced a lot more systems, or updated some, so they could get us content out faster.

Yet….it doesn’t seem to be working…

Honestly, some people dont seem to understand that the issue isnt that they are scraping the new legendaries in particular.

The Problem is that they pull workforce from a project that was a selling point for the current expansion and relocate them to another project, instead of pulling workforce from the next expansion, so that they can deliver what they already had us pay for.

Instead, they remain just as focused on the next potential cash grab, instead of giving what they already took money for.

Ding Ding Ding!

IMHO, I think one of the worst decisions ANet made was moving from a Living Story development cycle to a Living Story/Expansion development cycle. Ever since ANet made the move to move away from a development cycle that was working (regular Living Story updates) and moved their resources into developing expansions, we’ve had massive content droughts and less developer communication (it’s only been fairly recently that we’ve had more dev communication and transparency). HoT underwhelmed with a short storyline and underdelivered the features that were promised.

It is poor form that nearly a half-year later, there are expansion features that were promised in pre-launch advertising that we are STILL waiting on. And it is unacceptable that one of heavily advertised features that players were incredibly excited about (and PAID for) is now being put on the backburner indefinitely. This does not make me particularly confident about the other features that were promised, but have not yet been delivered.

It’s pretty obvious that ANet bit off more than it could chew by taking on expansions and their dev resources are spread WAY too thin. At this point, I wish they’d scrap the idea of a second expansion, allocate those resources to finishing what people paid for, then return to a development cycle that worked (regular Living Story updates and no expansions).

The problem is, the 2 week cycle wasn’t that great either. The story basically got done in a day (if it wasn’t bugged), and any other activities around it were done in maybe a second day (unless it needed repeating, due to time gates or farming).

Either way, in the end, it didn’t last the whole two weeks for anyone (unless they were on vacation for two whole weeks and could never just log in to get the free week. There was that incident I think with some weather problems and people were trying to help in some way).

People got bored of the two week schedule fast. And even then there were lulls in between chapters where…welp, really nothing much to do since you probably did all you could during the two weeks you had. Remember, not all of dry top and silverwastes was available right off the bat, but released over time as well.

Two weeks was too ambitious. From what I’m use to, it was at first new content every 3 months. If Anet wanted to show themselves as being more bold, a month would’ve been a better idea, maybe two, then see if you can work your way to even shorter times.

Two weeks was just waaay too big of a leap

Well, I agree that the expansion is “fine”. Its not good, its not great, its certainly not amazing as it was hyped up to be, its just, “eh, its fine”.

If I were to put it on terms of a scale of 1 – 10, its like a 4.5. “Fine”. It just feels less than that because of the hype they generated and fell flat on.

Which, it being “fine” just has me telling friends who are interested to just play for free for now and wait till the expansion goes on sale or something. Get it cheaper. Full price isn’t worth it

Ya know, when you think about it, announcing this on a friday was also a smart move. It being a holiday weekend, they get time off, and it basically lets us players scream and rant into an empty room for a few days

I wouldn’t say its the reward that’s the most important, its the “fun” towards.

While I know its subjective, you can at least figure out what ISN’T fun and try to avoid it. Like doing the same meta over and over, while praying you don’t DC or keep spamming LFG to get into a good map to get 500+ of a currency to go for a single skin when completing the long timed event nets you maybe a quarter of that, if lucky on drops.

I would say that isn’t “fun”

I think what’s really happening here is the discontent just found a way to let itself out now. You know, like the straw that broke the camel’s back sorta deal.

So all the complaints are coming forth and a lot of pent up anger is finally being released.

Be angry about legendary weapons, sure, but how about the recent drought of content? That kind of thing happens when we spread ourselves too thin, and when we let the content development pipeline empty out so we can fight fires.

If the team is spread to thin isn’t that really a sign that the team is too small to handle the scope of the game and that more should be hired?

Its also a sign that too many members are assigned to wrong projects. like 70 / 120 of your employees working on the next expansion rather than the current game…

I just want clarification on what the April update is. Because other than reducing the grind and “increasing rewards” it seems like there isn’t much planned that’s new and exciting.

The only thing I can think of is that SAB is coming out with this update.

That’s how I see it. This next update is just fixes, nothing new. I mean, usually other big gaming companies have their content droughts at the end of expansions. We had a long content drought, got basically a small expansion update (i really tried to take my time with it, and go slow. Still finished in about 2 months…), and now content drought again.

I’m actually starting to worry that LS3 is just going to be just this fall, and in december we get the ending teaser of the NEXT expansion already, and be in another content drought for another year.

I know its kinda pointless to bring up old news stuff, but travel back with me to one of the sites first blog posts.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/is-it-fun-colin-johanson-on-how-arenanet-measures-success/

So, my question is, is this method still done? Did members actually sit through HoT events, note the requirement needed for items and skins and say with a straight face, “This is fun!”

And is it still measured by the success of people staying on to play because of said “fun”, or is it back to basically looking at subscription numbers, just replace “subscription” with “gem store sales”?

DPS meter in game would be a "God Send"

So… exactly what have the devs been working since the release of HoT?

Good question. But mostly it seems to have been esports
