Event Markers With no Events

SlippyCheeze.5483

Dont know how related, but since for a year or two there have been event markers inside Divinity’svReach as well. One in the grenths plaza, one ar melandru’s and one in the garden-stellarium

Every time I ran into one of those (that is, those specific locations, in that specific city), it was a rift to stabilize. I’d suggest you check it out, but if you do find one that isn’t right, /bug it in-game, so that anet QA get the details they need to figure it out.

I really wish the rift event icons only showed up if you had the Rift Stabilizer in your inventory. The “nearby event” guide is pretty useless right now.

I do not disagree with you, as someone who has the item. I am pretty confident that the engine does not have the capability to do what you are asking, however, so it’s technically not practical.

I do make a practice of explaining as patiently as I can on the map what is going on, if people mention it, though. Which is to say, until someone insists that this isn’t the situation, which gets kind of frustrating, especially if they refuse to help out by actually letting me come to them and verify that there, y’know, isn’t a rift there.

It’s part of the class mechanic and a fundamental way in which the class is balanced. The ultimate utility class, with a huge ramp up on the cornerstone of damage. I don’t see that changing.

I see what you are saying, but I’d find mesmer way more attractive with more persistent, but lower damage, shatters, to balance around something where I don’t feel like it’s more challenge to use my resources than just shrug and waste them.

I’m not dead hopeful it’ll see a difference, but I figure, if nobody asks then there is zero chance of improvement.

Which bosses have multiple targets and/or adds that need to be killed? Also, do you mean “on average”, or “with specific players”?

Because I one hundred and ten percent promise you that I would lose trying to ele DPS vs necro DPS on any boss at all.

Ultimately, what you really want to do is argue about facts, not feelings, and definitely not your tiny slice of the large collection of raiders.

For which you really, really want to get a site like https://www.warcraftlogs.com/ collating performance details from many raiders, and comparing them, so you have statistically significant sample sizes available.

From the sticky,

- “Does this program allow someone to play faster, better, longer, or more accurately than someone who doesn’t use it?”

If it breaks any of those three basic rules it won’t be okay.

Then, strictly speaking, any DPS meter would not be OK, because a DPS meter could help to improve someones play/rotation and without it, he/she would have not become this better.

And a tool like YoloMouse could also fall under this rule. Because in the sometimes hefty visual-clutter of GW2 sometimes the mouse-cursor is lost / not visible and a better visible mouse-cursors helps (some) people to play better in this situations.

P.S. I do believe that YoloMouse does not violate Anets rules.

You are correct that the way anet interpreted the rules prior to the AMA made any DPS meter a ToS violation. Post-AMA we are in a situation where they sighed, and said something like “ok, fine, you can use memory reading DPS meters, but only if they restrict themselves to these subset of things.”

(Though, mostly not relevantly, there is quite some opinion in “improve your rotation” is an advantage or not, since coherent arguments can be mustered that better measurement doesn’t change the fundamental nature of practicing, especially in view of the DPS golem existing.)

Changing the mouse cursor, yes, does kind of fall into the same bucket. Ditto ICM, in some ways.

At the end of the day what it comes down to is that we have officially “grudgingly tolerated” DPS meters now.

SlippyCheeze.5483

Increasing Ram won’t help issues. Performance in Gw2 pretty much comes down to CPU power.

Only reason to go for 32 gigs of ram, for gaming, is if you plan to run the game from a ramdisk. While that should improve loading times, it will have zero impact on the actual performance.

You don’t even need to go there: Windows will automatically use the extra memory to cache data read from disk, so that it doesn’t need to be read again. That’ll automatically speed up load screens, etc, the second time they need an asset.

Going as far as a ramdisk isn’t required. (Also, 32GB is nice if you like to have more than just GW2 running at the time, like a bunch of browser tabs, overlays, etc. I appreciate it when my backup client uses 4GB of RAM, etc.)

Is the recipe to reproduce this:

1. Start GW2
2. Log in
3. Open guild panel
4. Visit history tab
5. Try to whisper someone

…and at step 5 it fails? (I’m asking, because if so, that’s the exact recipe anet need to reproduce and figure out what the kitten is going on here!)

You can purchase exotic (but not salvagable) temple armor if you want an exotic zerker build again in future. OTOH, you already have the stuff, so … I’d personally let it sit in the bank, at least until I was on point for the dark matter. I get enough random exotics that I still have plenty left after a couple of full sets of ascended.

hold up

this run was aimed at him specifically trying Nec in all wings

So your saying a guy that is bringing a necro into a raid for the very first time isn’t doing stellar dps?

protip: Pretty much everyone does terrible dps the first time they take a class into a raid.

Are you saying that players skill is a significant contributor to performance in raids? Say it isn’t so!!!!11!

(It’s almost as if that might contribute to the realisation that people playing ele poorly do less DPS than people playing a “weaker” class well, brought to us by DPS meters actually telling people the difference between Qtfy members running their preferred class on a DPS golem … and random pug players in raids.)

Eh dps meters ruined the game right? Delusional toxicity is off the charts.

I wouldn’t call that statement … entirely false, either. DPS meters are …

Well, in my industry the saying is “you get what you measure”. If you measure the number of teapots a teapot frobnicator frobnicates in an hour, they will definitely frobnicate as many as they can … even if the quality of frobnication is poor.

DPS meters measure damage output, and rarely do things like “damage done / damage taken” or whatever that helps account for, eg, successfully performing mechanics.

Over in WoW this led to pain with people who would top the meters because they just literally stand in the fire, carry out their DPS rotation, and counting on the healers to heal them.

Then we wipe because they can’t do mechanics like “run out when you have the debuff” to save their lives, or ours, but hey … at least we got what we measured?

So, yeah, DPS meters contribute to badness (“toxicity”) in raiding, and other content.

Also, and separately, then contribute to understanding that player skill is actually significant in GW2, and that theoretical output is different from real world output of a class… especially because mechanics hit some classes more than others. (“wait, the boss doesn’t just stand in your nice fields?!?”)

It’s complex, and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something.

It’s worth considering that while some folks do observe the religious holiday, a non-trivial part of the playerbase probably have what amounts to a “free day” on which they have nothing to do other than play games — thanks to religiously driven days off in an increasingly secular set of societies…

GW2 Remastered?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: SlippyCheeze.5483

SlippyCheeze.5483

One game I know that did this in an okay way is Star Trek Online. You can play in DX9c or DX11. But one thing I remember from Guild Wars 1, before Sorrow’s Furnace was added we had only DX9. That update enabled DX9c for better shaders and reflective armor.

Most people I believe are playing on a DX11 or higher capable machine…unless you are using Windows 7 which only goes as a high as DX10. Adding higher DirectX or even Vulcan support would be great, but it would take time to iron out any potential bugs before it can go live.

It’s often the case that “supports both” engines don’t actually do much of anything that benefits from DirectX 11, they just send roughly the same commands they would have sent from dx9 to dx11 code instead.

Certainly, in GW2 the real pain point is not the DirectX version, but rather, the structure of the client code that makes it difficult to take advantage of extra cores. Moving to DX11 would simply mean the same single-threaded performance was blocking the frame rate … but at least DPS meters would have to be called “d3d11.dll” now…

eg: there are not really many technical features unlocked simply by adding DX11 support, and those that are tend to be fairly insignificant without additional effort, or simply available via DX9 extensions.

I believe it is supposed to give you two keys anyway, so you might wanna write to support about that one, and ask them for the extra keys. (The skin is account bound on acquire, not resellable, right? I assume so, but didn’t check. That rule only applies to account bound on acquire things.)

Which as mentioned is a design problem, not an inventory problem. Fixing this by increasing the inventory size is just a bandaid fix. The best solution here is as mentioned a fix to the actual problem, aka making more currencies go into the currencies tab instead of stack into the material storage.

It’s not a design problem, it’s BY DESIGN. How many bank tab and bag slots have they sold by forcing all this junk on us? It’s not a coincidence.

Gonna have to disagree with you considering Linsey is working on adding mats to mat storage and getting LWS3 currencies added either to mat storage or to the wallet. So no, its not all by design.

haha, yeah. As a good rule of thumb, if your theory is based on “X is done specifically to annoy you into paying money for Y”, it’s probably not even remotely reality-based.

Scribe & Guild Halls

So me and my friend want to make a guild hall and fully decorate it. Once I looked into it i figured out I’m about 4 members too short to even claim the guild hall let alone be able to do the events to earn points to upgrade it in the future.

What is the point of even having scribe? It requires a huge guild with tons of people donating resources so that 2-3 people in a guild of 100+ get to have fun and enjoy all of the content that a-net made for guild halls.

I’m pretty sure that the theory behind this is that placing decorations isn’t the “only” fun of guild halls, and that just enjoying a nicely decorated hall is something that players can do.

Which, honestly, is my experience of our (large) guilds hall, which is decorated, and which most folks appreciate, enjoy the jumping puzzle in, but don’t feel the pain of not being able to do their own decorating.

The few who do … ask, and usually get, the permissions to do that.

3) You don’t need the expansion right away unless you want to be a Revenant. Most of HoT’s benefits take place after you get to Level 80. But once you get there, I highly suggest the expansion – if only for the gliding. OMG – being able to glide anywhere in the game makes travelling through Tyria a hundred times better!

The “login rewards” do start accumulating instantly. Gliding actually requires doing the first HoT story mission and training the mastery, which requires being level 80, so that’s not much of a reason to get it for “right now”. That said, it’s not a huge grind to 80 or whatever, so … I thought it was worth it.

I’d also echo the others: the game has good population, and while there are balance complaints, they are mostly the player generated “X is theoretically better” that doesn’t hold up in practice.

Sure, but isn’t a build template basically running a “select traits” script as though you had clicked the appropriate build sections of the hero panel manually?

It’s not that you are wrong, it’s that there are additional considerations about, eg, storage, network traffic, ux, gameplay, etc, that the developers have to deal with putting these on approximately the same level.

If you really want something like this, some of the restriction QoL features available with some DPS meters do support client-side-only build and gear templates similar to what you describe here. That is ToS violating, though…

Very easy, I stop joining anything, because it’s my computer fault, my network fault, my fault……….

never ANET’s fault…….

I run an i7 with 10GB of RAM, with a GTX 960 Graphics card, a high speed HDD, all programs in the background are paused or turned off during GW2 sessions. My internet is pinging quite well because it’s not major patch week. If there is a patch week, I would never join Fractals, because my ping is 1k plus.[…]

10 GB ram is a number you don’t get with a proper setup. Either your ram is broken or you have a wierd configuration that can cause problems. Which would also explain why your load times spike at random, if you access broken or wierd configured ram areas.

Eh, it’s extremely unlikely that any performance difference from mismatched RAM would be notable, and it definitely can’t explain five-plus minute load times. Like, it’s one or two percent difference at absolute most. Just having 2×4GB and 2×1GB sticks or something gives you 10GB fine, and it works ok.

Much more likely given the comments about reasonably high performance local storage, etc, is that this is some network related problem. `-clientport 80` and `-clientport 443` have bypassed ISP throttling that “mistakes” GW2 traffic for torrents or whatever in some cases.

Using a VPN to try out bypassing that entirely can be effective to help localise it.. but, ultimately, SirDrygan.1823, I absolutely believe there is a problem, and I want to help you solve it to the best of my ability. (Without buying new anything.)

You are, though, absolutely welcome to avoid the “player to player” support forums here, and work with ANet via support ticket though. That will put you in touch with someone employed by the company who can work directly with you to help figure things out.

PS: as someone who works in IT, I learned a while back that I really should suppress my instinct to say “not /my/ gear”. which helps when I called my cable company because I had some packet loss, and they said “have you tried tightening the cables”; my thought was “no, because I have not touched them, and they have been fine for months.”

Turns out my cable had come a little loose, and by trying the “have you turned it off and on again” solution, I got my problem fixed, boom, just like that. It /is/ worth trying those common tests to eliminate the easy things.

It’s not impossible that this will happen, but like the requests for “DirectX 11 support”, it’s basically “replace the current engine with a newer one”, which is a huge development cost.

It /might/ happen, but it’s a big investment and has relatively limited returns. Especially changes like additional character customization are super-expensive because they require changes not only to the client, but to the server, the storage systems, the network protocol, and anything that interacts with the character model (eg: bones and animations, gear textures, etc.)

So … relatively speaking if you had to spend three months, would you choose something that was close to invisible (character customization) or something more visible (several maps, story, etc) to the players?

hehe, my advice: you have a new game. forget about “what changed”, and instead, approach “the exciting new MMO you got into today, GW2”

Returning player, issue keeping up with meta

If you’re just running around open world PvE and dabbling in WvW, then why change your gear at all? Why follow a meta? Better to perhaps tweak your traits and utility skills if you find that balance changes have lessened the desirability of skills and traits you were using.

I’m not sure, am I playing incorrectly? Can I use Berserker gear for WvW and EotM?

Most of my characters use Berserker gear.

Sure, you can use it there. You will do more damage, but be more prone to death, than the average, but … whatever.

You can also pick one set with a mix of offensive and defensive stats and be a bit better off, or mix and match pieces.

The “meta” is actually “the builds that are the most theoretically powerful right now”, rather than a rule you have to follow. The real world difference is usually small enough that player skill makes a much bigger difference in how things play out than the mechanical differences the meta works with.

This is doubly true in player vs player situations, where an extremely skilled player in poor gear, with a build they know well but that is far from the meta, can counter a player who is wearing the flavor of the month build, but doesn’t know how to use their defensive skills well at all…

Kill Braham, Marjory off in story

I liked how it was handled with Caithe stealing the egg. As you say, we are forced to go along with the story, as we don’t have multiple story paths in GW2 – but in that case it was clear the PC was not happy with what she was doing, she just did it anyway. I’d like to see more of that with Braham as well. He can forge his own path against our will, but we should be way more vocal about our opposition. To me, it just felt like we gave a token effort to dissuade him from going off on his own but just sort of shrugged our shoulders when he doesn’t listen.

If it helps, I would probably have done the same thing. It’s quite clear to me that Braham is not willing or able to listen to reason, and “conversation” is not going to change things here.

I’ve dealt with too many people in that mode in real life to think that the story as written by anet got it wrong in trying a tiny bit, then kind of giving up, being sad, and asking Rox to keep him out of trouble until we can figure out how the heck to save him from himself.

I can totally see why you might want to respond differently, though. My responses are shaped by my own experience in similar situations, and seeing that my instinct to respond isn’t productive. If that is because I got unlucky situations, or sucked when I tried to respond, that’d totally bias me against action when … maybe it’s the right thing to do.

Guild Hall decorations I feel are missing

I agree! Having more decorations would be great. I love the Norn themes myself. More interactive items as well. IE: foodstuff like Fruit cart that give randoms food products.

ALSO – THE COST FOR MAKING SOME DECORATIONS ARE ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! ESPECIALLY IF THERE’S ONLY A SINGULAR PERSON DOING THE DECORATION CRAFTING!

This was designed as group content, and is priced to reflect that. Like dungeons, you totally can solo it, if you want, but don’t expect it to be as fast or convenient as doing it with a team will be.

Yeah some decorations (definitely not all) indeed are mostly designed with group content in mind, though it is hugely impractical in set up with acc bound scribing materials, requiring account bound achievement items or dungeon gifts. There’s also some which are just expensive for very little to show for in return.

Part of the “group” part is donations of money or items to the scribe, who is basically doing the clicky part for the entire group. Plus time to help them, eg, through achieves, doing dungeon runs, etc, to get those bits.

It’s … possibly not the right choice, but it’s the one that anet clearly made with this. It definitely disappoints people who really wanted a “personal housing” option, and opt to use a guild for that purpose.

They enjoy joking about themselves in game as well, I remember skills like “Isaiah’s Balance” and bosses like “Tenagg Flametroller”, and of course the “bearded reptile” Minister Caudecus.

Who, in fairness, is actually a reptilian sent here to take over the government…

We were just looking through the baby name books with the midwife and she pointed out Trahern (as in Trahearne) and said “oww, I really like this one! It’s a nice strong Irish name.”
It means Strength of Iron" but it’s actually more Gaelic than Irish. I tell you, we’d be half tempted if we hadn’t used a very GW name for one of the girls already.

I wonder if that’s how the devs name some of the NPCs when making the game, just randomly picking names from baby naming books. lol

haha, yeah, US players also report this sort of thing, but who knows? Anyway, the most common EU complaint was a third party transit provider that sits between your ISP and ANet, and which was dropping packets. :/

https://www.pingplotter.com/fix-your-network will help you track down where, exactly, the problem is happening (or eliminate at least some network related causes) though, so I’d start there.

(or contact support via a ticket, at which point they will ask you to do roughly that anyway.)

As annoying as Braham is with his whining, I actually don’t mind it as a character trait considering his age and what he went through (just reconnected with his mother then she is killed in front of him). What I do find upsetting is that the PC is forced to indulge his behavior. Like, I get it kid, you’re going through a rough time. I’m still going to speak up if you are acting rashly and endangering others with your recklessness.

That is the price of being the hero of the story … we have to act in a way consistent with the story as written, or it all falls apart. I liked the way The Secret World made me just another member of the group, and the leaders were NPCs.

Sure, I might hate the group direction, but I didn’t feel forced to accept it, and could take actions to disagree, etc, without breaking the whole story apart.
