Necro is useless in dungeons, and doing good in pvp atm. If your focus is PvE, then the only reason to play one would be for fun, but if it is harder PvE content, your group would be better of with you as another class.

PvE is a separate issue for pets in general for obvious reasons.

A lot of players say rangers are easy kills but I have met rangers on occasion that can survive well and put out great damage, it just depends on the player. I am of the opinion that the ranger class attracts lots of bad players(like the hunter in wow), and that is a big part of why people think rangers are so easy to kill. Between evades, roots, and snares, rangers have the tools to deal with thieves, you just don’t often see a ranger who can utilize them. Spirit rangers are nasty right now, in a better place pvp wise than thieves actually. Next patch, who knows.

I pvp on my necro probably more thank thief, and I have never had an issue with thieves stealthing off my golem. /shrug

You can’t put away your pet… Have you ever played a ranger before?

First off, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a thief stealthing, that IS the focus mechanic of the thief. The issue is, alot of thieves abuse CND’s on the pet because it’s a guaranteed stealth. CND is supposed to be something to work for , if you get it off on the ranger, then the ranger should be punished for it. However, when you’re getting free CND’s off on my pet even when I can dodge it myself? I’m penalized for having lackluster pet AI, but that’s alright – you are right , and it’ll probably never get fixed. There have been huge oversights in the development side of pets in general throughout this game not just involving the ranger pets so it is what it is.

Although, your reply simply shows your lack of the ranger class in general if you think rangers can ‘put their pets away’. That’s some idiotic kitten.

So if they do add a functionality that dodges the pet/pet gets aegis when you dodge and you just wasted initiative on it, are you going to cry to the boards or accept it as the ranger just playing the game as well?

Also, Sic em has just been announced that it is an un-dodgeable shout cast with a 4second reveal attached to it. So when I know you’re going to CND my pet now I’ll just anticipate it since I know when thieves are going to do it usually anyway. So I guess it’s not problem really after all. When I use an un-dodgeable shout on you , you can’t complain though because we’re simply playing the game. Ok?

Your pet is a part of your class. You use it for damage, condition removal, roots, survival cooldowns, among other things. Thieves being able to use it for cloak and dagger is just part of that package, part of playing a pet class. There is no abuse here. When you say thieves are abusing ranger pets you just look like a whiner. Mesmer clones can be used for cnd, so can necro minions, and ambient creatures/doors.

LOL sorry but read it and they are just being stupid. Passive healing… warrior wins… shout heals now heal for a great amount for a aoe. Great buffs with banners. Higher health pool to take advantage of the best passive healing in game! Best burst dps in game. Condition spec is super dangerous.

Guardians have protetion.. which is only up a very small % of the time.. I will take a passive 400hps heal with no healing over our protection.

If more was comming to guardians they would have talked about it in the pod cast but they were so illiterate about guardians one of the skills they buffed they couldn’t even find it….

It is obvious the devs dont care and are just plain ignoring guardian problems.. just wish I would have known that guardians would be the forgotten class (ever game ends up with 1 class that is obvious the black sheep no dev cares about) so I could have put all my time into making gear and farming gear for my Warrior. But hey after having to play 2 x as hard to keep a guardian competitive I feel like I am on easy mode when I play my warrior who is less equip t.

I can sympathize with your feelings that warriors outclass you(warriors seem to be A-Nets golden child), but you have to stop with the QQ about guardians being useless. They are still a required class in every aspect of the game.

They’re not required, they’re playable. There’s a big difference. You don’t require a guardian to complete dungeons. No one class is required in PvE. Some classes are sought after in WvW for one or two skills that can tip a battle in your favor. Veil anyone? That doesn’t mean it’s required. It also doesn’t mean that people want to play a ‘bot’ class that’s only good for one or two specific things.

Guardians are being shafted atm. They suffered from new player syndrome. They are the easiest class to bunker and dominate on against new players and therefore got little-to-no attention with trait/skill revamps. Play against someone who knows their options and has a solid build and you’re done. The only thing you can hope for is to either be a PvE-hero or play sPvP and cover points until your allies arrive.

I don’t believe you. It is widely known that Guardians bring excellent support and utility for PvE, while also providing above average dps. Every spvp tournament I have ever seen featured 1-2 guardians per team. There are tons of them in wvw not only for spreading boons and healing.

I am not saying you are the best class in the game or anything, but to say guardians suck is complete hilarity. Try playing a Necro or ranger in pve, now that is what i would call being shafted.

NO thief will use that new immobilize. It drains all their initiative for like 3 seconds total. The venom takes a utility slot that will instead be used for shadowstep, shadow refuge, or another better utility.

0/20/30/20/0 is a good one. Its possible he was using the standard s/d evade build, but if he was stealthing a lot then probably not. He may have just been using stealth utilities with a random cloak and dagger thrown in. 0/30/10/30/0 can still stealth a lot even if they don’t really get any bonus from it.

The only change that needs to happen is a fix to SA trait V, Infusion of Shadow. It currently refunds 2 initiative for every heartseeker used through black powder. it should only return 2 ini for the heartseeker that puts you into stealth.

This would solve perma stealth and also not hurt any of the other weapon sets who rely on the trait and stealth in general.

Yea stealth fine, at higher skill lvl thief is kinda in the middle when it come to dueling 1v1 Mes, engi and wars is stronger atm rest is prob about even with thief (also depends on spec and build). Though thief is the best a killing noobs and less skilled players in 1vX situations. I agree that facing dp perma stealth is very annoying but its not op many other classes with stronger specs.

An obvious tip to beating dp is interupting hs through bp at the right time all classes have the ability to do that

I dunno, guess I hang out with good thieves, but then again I do roll with thieves like Triggerless who dominate alot of people in 1on1s regardless of class. The making it out like thief is bad in 1on1s doesn’t work, there’s a reason why a bunch of thieves are always at 1on1 duel clubs, they excel beyond other classes in 1on1s when played right. In large team play are they effective? Yes, you just need to know how to hit important targets and support teammates. Thief is absolutely fine, it’s when people make it out like it’s a bad class that you’ll only be able to kill bad people that annoys the kitten out of me because I’m good friends with VERY good thieves that DOMINATE in 1on1s. The class has the highest skill ceiling in the game, it’s not the class’s fault your bad at it.

You’re saying though that you want thief balance to be changed based on the very highest skill level. If all classes were balanced like this we would not be the only class looking at a shaving this balance patch. If your “VERY good [thief] friends that DOMINATE in 1on1’s” had mained a different class would they still dominate 1v1’s? And are you saying that VERY good players should not dominate in 1v1’s?

No, they don’t main other classes, but they play and enjoy other classes and learn them. I think that’s the point I was making. The thief class has a ceiling that, if you understand every aspect of the other class you can dominate with it in just about every scenario, not EVERY class is like that yet all I see in the forums is everybody crying about what they DON’T have. Thief is very good in 1o1’s right now when played right and a firm understanding of the other class. I wish every class was able to have this kind of ceiling but they don’t. I said thief was fine, so not sure where you’re getting ‘very good players should not dominate in 1v1s’. Kind of confused overall by your post in general really.

I’m getting at tour other suggestions really about how chill should affect thieves and how thier attacks should be limited in cases. Our skills already recharge in series rather than in parallel. Adding a component that would further slow this down would be crippling for the thief. What I was driving at is that you suggested changes based on who you play with.

CND’ing a pet you know can’t dodge isn’t a non-limitation of attack, it’s thieves abusing a broken pet AI system put in place by anet. In reality, anet is to blame on this one, it just so happens to make it easier for thieves. Like I said before, I shouldn’t be penalized in a fight if I know and can dodge the CND attack consistently , I’ve practice alot to learn how to dodge it , so when I see them spam it on my pet that they KNOW can’t dodge it , it ticks me off a little bit. I get penalized for knowing thief skills in this regard. I’m with you on chill , it would end up being pretty big nerf to thieves if some form of slowing of initiative regen.

I like how whenever thieves use stealth, they are somehow abusing something. Using cloak and dagger on doors is also ‘abusing’ something? What about random mobs in wvw?

If you don’t want a thief to cnd your pet, then put it away. Don’t want to do that? Then deal with it.. There are ups and downs to every class in this game(and any game). Pets in pretty much every game have bad AI by pvp standards, so expecting otherwise in this game is silly. Thieves who cnd pets aren’t abusing anything, they are playing the game.

And as another poster already said, its better to cnd the ranger anyway for the damage and since you will be on them anyway.

The same reason Zynga caps your free water in Farmville…to make you feel on a psychological level like you’re missing out if you’re not logging in on a regular basis.

Which basically means that they are focusing on forcing you to play instead of focusing on making the game good. They need to drop this quantity over quality mentality, and get back to the GW1 style that made them popular in the first place.

New class skills, new areas to explore, new quests. That right there would bring back more players than some random event like they have been doing.

I love the temporary content. I’m glad they remove stuff, and I hope they continue to do it.

Living story means that new things come, and old things go. Living = change. The removed content adds to the lore of the game. It is, quite literally, the history of the game. It’s something that no other game has the balls to do, and I think it’s awesome.

I get that you are disappointed that you missed some stuff, but that was your choice. You didn’t care enough to play it when it was in the game, but suddenly you care now? The game is free. Play whenever you want, as much as you want. But if you decide to skip content, that’s your choice.

None of the condition cleansing abilities you listed will really slow down a Necro applying his conditions, so I am not really sure what you are asking…

If you want to know what builds are weak against conditions, I would say mainly guardians who don’t specifically build for lots of cleanses, and also 95% of mesmers too. Non-Lyssa thieves are also pretty weak vs. conditions, and also rangers.

Really the only classes that are strong vs. conditions are engineers and other necroes, and yes the current OP warrior stun build gives us trouble.

If your goal is to solo PvE content, then roll a warrior or guardian.

Those are the two easy classes in this game, and they are also the most used for soloing difficult bosses in dungeons.

As for leveling a thief goes, there are a few builds that make it easy, but overall it is one of the most difficult to level.

The simple solution is to reduce the field duration of bp by 1s, and have the trait that returns 2 ini on stealth, return 1 instead.

Bad. That would nerf d/d, s/d, p/d as well.

Simple solution: The SA trait V that returns 2 initiative when using an ability that stealths you could do just that, only return initiative when you go into stealth on the first HS. The reason d/p thieves can perma stealth is because they gain 2 ini per HS, which shouldn’t really happen.

That may not be so easy to program, but I have always believes in doing things right. So A-Net probably wont fix it this way. I am sure they would rather just nerf thieves as a whole again.

TLDR.

You doomed any kind of relevant argument yourself when you said “Thieves are out of control. Its the only class that makes anyone else FEEL like a sitting duck when you fight them and no chance.”

You may feel that way, but that is not the truth. Thieves are very squishy, and have plenty of counters. I know this because on my Necro, I often destroy thieves and walk away with 90% HP.

The bottom line is, people just don’t like losing to thieves. They can get destroyed by condition necros or perplexity engies, they can get smashed by a warrior, but they will remember that loss to a thief because OMG HE WAS STEALTHED.

No sympathy from me. Learn how to counter the class, because thieves are fine, and they aren’t even one of the top pvp classes right now.

Completely agree. I took a long break from the game as well… and I missed: Flame and Frost, Dragonbash, Bazaar of the Four Winds, the Sky Pirates, and the Queens Gauntlet. I’m sure I missed more, but those are the ones that sounded pretty cool.

Why the hell weren’t they just added to the game as new areas of content? Why did they have to be temporary?

I too feel like when I came back to the game, NOTHING had changed. No new zones, no new skills, no new legendaries…

Pretty much all I had to do after that amount of time was get caught up on ascended trinkets, because they didn’t have earrings before my break.

Taking damage brought one out of stealth, unless vanish was just used. Here, we got thieves stealthing, then stealthing right after their first stealth runs out. I guess we all have to spend money to beat a class…

1) Thieves are easy to kill. Try playing one, it helps.

2) WoW is such a different game, making any kind of comparison is useless.

3) Evade builds are just as strong if not stronger than stealth builds, so are you really complaining about stealth or do you just hate losing to thieves?

It really depends on how much you value that utility slot. If you look at it from just a statistical point of view… it would be 6% crit damage, and 30 power, prec, vit, and toughness vs. 180 power or 8% crit from the utility signets. I am not really sure that is worth it.

But when you compare those stats to an extra skill like a stunbreak, extra stealth, or teleport… travelers could be well worth it.

Personally I am keeping divinity because they were super expensive. I pretty much always have shadow/step/refuge equipped so not sure I would need much else… infiltrators or blinding powder would be nice, but I am not sure how much damage I would be willing to lose for them.

Has anyone actually seen someone that has a Teq weapon? I honestly haven’t seen one anywhere. Not in LA, not in my large guild events, and not even on the battlefield with hundreds of regular Teq slayers.

What is the actual % chance for him to drop his ascended(the only reason to kill him post achievements).

Those weapons are the only reason I sit around with my thumb in my kitten for an hour and a half multiple times a day, but I have never seen one. I feel like I am wasting my time and its getting a bit hopeless.

What is the point with the random spawn thing? If they want it at an hour, why not just make him spawn every hour? This random 30 minute window on top of that is just asinine.

This is partly why I haven’t even attempted him since I got all my boss week achievements. I don’t have time to wait around for an hour just for a .5% chance or whatever it is for the cool weapons. When I do have the time for it, I would rather be doing something else that actually yields rewards.

Help with dual dagger pve build

I should mention that if you are just starting to level, thieves can be very squishy and sometimes frustrating.

There is a different way to play double dagger that is very good for leveling. Basically you just find any gear with power or condition damage, and spam your dual skill ability ‘death blossom’ over your enemies heads until they die, throwing in random auto attack chains.

With this build you want to put points into trickery for extra bleed damage and also there are lots of ways to boost your initiative, which is what you want for this style. When trickery is maxed out, put points in acrobatics, it synergizes well because of the extra dodging(there is a trickery trait that drops AE bleeds on dodging).

You want to have caltrops utility for this build, it does a lot of AE bleed damage. You also want to have signet of malice for your healing skill because you will gain a lot of health from enemies sitting in your caltrops and from all the death blossom attacks.

This spec can take on lots of enemies at once and still kills fairly quickly. I leveled with this and didn’t find anything too tough.

Double dagger is the best single target damaging weapon set. The best dps build is 30/30/10/0/0, taking the V trait in shadow arts for initiative return on stealthing. This allows a nice fluid dps rotation of: Cloak and Dagger > Backstab > Auto attack chain > repeat.

Always try to stay behind your target for bigger backstabs.

Berserker(Power/Precision/Crit dmg.) gear is your go to dps gear, but if you are having trouble surviving, you can mix in some pieces with vitality. You can also use the 25/30/0/15/0 spec for more health and more dodging if you are having trouble staying alive, but with this spec you need to use two auto attack chains between every backstab combo.

If you are leveling, just start by putting points into critical strikes, then when you max that traitline out, either use deadly arts for more power or you can do into shadow arts or acrobatics for survival, and they both have great traits.

One thing that I think the devs overlooked is tying more traits directly to the amount of initiative you have.

And maybe making initiative a more valuable resource on it’s own.

For example, Critical Haste’s bonus could be based on the amount of initiative you have in your pool, instead of a static bonus.

Initiative could give a chance to dodge (independent of any traits) – giving all Thieves a natural defense built right in, as they are so squishy.

Due to the trait that boosts damage when above 6 initiative, I already feel like I can’t use my pool… I wouldn’t want more traits(or whatever) that penalized me for using it.

I use bone minions in spvp all the time. They are super fun to burst with.

I would never go 30 deep into death though. Death nova just isn’t worth it to me. If it stacked with minion explosion then I would use it.

I can kill a heavy golem in about 3 seconds.. and chieftan/svanir in like 5 seconds with this burst. Focus4 > well of suffering > explode minion > axe2 > explode minion

I like your build. Usually though when I run something like 30/0/20/20 its with a sword mainhand.

Personally, when I am out doing stuff in open world, I prefer a more stealth oriented build. This helps with being able to pass by mobs, gather nodes with mobs nearby, or just escape danger in general.

Currently I am using 0/30/15/25/0. I like it because I can dodge a ton, and have two +10% damage traits, and I can maintain them due to the shadow arts V trait. I am not really attached to trickery, although I do sometimes miss fury.

I can kill champs pretty easy with this… just do a normal cloak and dagger, auto attack, backstab chain, and dodge when necessary. I use withdraw for healing because I have plenty of stealth from cloaks and utilities.

But back to your build, I like it, but I wouldn’t use a backstab build without 10 in shadow arts for the +2 initiative on cloak and dagger… that would drive me nuts.

Yeah those runes are so broken its hilarious. It’s also funny seeing people legitimately trying to defend them. Get real.

I haven’t encountered too many thieves using this build, probably because its only good 1v1 or 1v2. But yeah it is frustrating for sure. Most of the time I just run away because its not worth the time to try and kill them, and they don’t deal much damage that way.

I wouldn’t have such an issue with a build exploiting a rune set if the build actually required skill to play. P/P perplexity is probably the most noob friendly thief build ever made though, so it just makes it worse.

Hey All. Thanks for the tips. When I played tonight it was much different. The shadow return to remove conditions is really effective. I was missing this.

I think thief vs necro is very competitive.

I play both, and it is a pretty even match-up right now.

Pre-Dire gear, I found I could kill good necros about 70% of the time, but the extra HP from dire makes them much harder, so its about 50/50 for me now. Fun fights for sure.

I don’t really have the time to go over most of the traits.

But I will say that venoms in general need to be better, and traps need to be MUCH better. They should function similar to ranger traps. Need a circular trigger, and hit every target that is in range when they go off, not just 1 target.

Venoms simply need a cooldown reduction, and some of them need to be changed. Spider venom needs something else added to it, I can’t think of any other utility that just straight up adds 1 condition. Devourer would be okay if it had a shorter cooldown. Scale venom(thats the one with torment right?) would be okay if it had a shorter cooldown. The one that adds chill is pretty useless.

Also, I really don’t think any thief utility needs to be nerfed. The two most powerful are Shadow Refuge and Shadowstep. SR has an obvious counter(the thief is inside so AE him or knock him out), and shadowstep has a long cooldown. The only reason these two are used so often is because so many of the others just suck.

I will also say that I feel thieves being one of the mobile classes need more access to swiftness. In Spvp I can make do with dodge spam and boon duration from Acro. But on wvw/pve, I pretty much always have shadow signet slotted for passive move speed increase because dodging won’t even come close to perma swiftness, and the only other way is to trait 30 into trickery and use steal just for swiftness.

I don’t think its fair that the ‘mobile’ class needs to sacrifice a utility for movement speed when other classes like necro, warrior, ranger, engineer can obtain perma swiftness fairly easily.

You just have to burst necro’s down. When they pop their survival cooldowns like plague, spectral armor+deathshroud, just stealth and reset fight.

Save shadowstep for big fears, try to dodge their staff attack(the one where he points the staff at you), thats the fear mark.

Move Healing Power to Precision

God no…

Healing power scaling is TERRIBLE. That extra 1500-3000 you get during a whole fight can be healed in one steal if you trait for Mug.

If they seperated prec from crit damage on the thief traitlines, then we would need a straight damage buff, because thats all thieves are good for in pve. Damage.

The problem with making precursors easier to get is that you directly make legendaries easier to get. And they are already very commonly seen.

I would be fine with making precursors easier to get if they also increased the mats needed for the other parts of the legendaries like the gifts.

Personally, the hardest part BY FAR for me when I crafted my Bolt was just getting the gold for the precursor. I don’t think it should be that way.

Posting here to show my support for this. I feel 100% useless on my necro in open world bosses.

In dungeons, I feel okay if there are no other condition users… even though my bomb bleeds get knocked off by crappy ones from power build auto attacks and procs. If there are more than one condition user, I feel useless yet again.

The system is flawed, period. And it is such a huge issue that it is embarassing that it still exists.

Why even have condition specs in the game? Honestly.

No. You need support skills to clear content(boons, AE heals). You also need utility skills(reflects, blind fields, group stealth, timewarp), and survival skills.

That doesn’t change the fact that gearing for dps is more efficient. That is a problem with stat scaling, not the game overall. If healing power didn’t scale like utter crap, then it would probably be used more.

Hmm… I think GW2 is a great game, especially for the price. But to me, there are so many things they could have done to make it better, that they have failed at.

What I like:

- Personal Story as you level up. Really fun and engaging.
- Heart style questing, no need to track down quest givers.
- Events. Really cool how you can come accross random events and partake in them.
- Character creation. I love the amount of options, sliders, and choices that go into it.
- Combat. Active dodging, weapon swapping, its all very fun to me.
- New LFG system. Great addition, has really helped me find dungeon runs.

What I don’t like:

-Living Story. Not only does this have nothing to do with the Elder Dragons, or anything we did in the personal story, but theres really no story at all in-game. Basically just a random thing to do every few weeks. The goal of releasing content every few weeks is a great one, but I would prefer a monthly update with more quality instead of quantity. Release new class skills, more explorable areas with new quests, personal story lines, you know… an actual living story.

-Class balance. I haven’t played a ton of MMO’s, but the class balance in this game is very bad. In PvE, some classes are down right useless, while others remain powerful in every area(damage, survival, utility, support). In PvP, most classes have only one viable build, some have none, and some classes are just plain overpowered.

-Mystic Toilet. Gambling is fun for some, but if they wanted to add gambling to the game, they could have added a casino somewhere in LA(how fun would that be!). Relying on RNG system that is the mystic forge is extremely frustrating. I have never enjoyed RNG looting.

-Temporary content. They waste so much time making content that they remove a week later. I took a long break from the game, and when I returned, the game really hadn’t changed at all! The reason for this is because all the content they had released while I was away had been removed from the game… kitten?

I was looking forward to A-Net releasing new land areas to explore, with more quests in the style of the personal story. I was looking forward to continuing to battle the elder dragons as a champion of the Pact.

So far, every content patch has been a big disappointment for me.

We haven’t even gotten any new skills!

Eh, the rewards for Teq aren’t really worth the time investment, but those green ascended weapons are sick looking.

As for the back pieces.. some are cool, others I dislike, but I think those rewards are fine for completing achievements. I definitely wish they were dye-able.

I am just upset that I missed so much content, and yet at the same time I have become bored with the ‘new’ living story content.  I still play the game because I enjoy doing dailies, or random things with guildies.  But I think it is poor design that I cannot play Queen’s Guantlet, or any of the other contents that I may have missed.  I do not know much about them, but just the names of the Sky Pirates and Bazaar of the Four winds makes me want to experience them.  I have heard a lot about the Queen’s guantlet and that type of event sounded really fun to me…

Glass Cannon Hybrid Dps (viable! Yay!)

You can make a decent hydrid dps with celestial trinkets and rampager armor with divinity runes.

Dagger/Dagger for lots of death blossom spam and auto attacks, shortbow for nice ranged and AE direct damage plus bleeds/poison.

You end up with like 3k attack, 60% crit, 1000 condition damage, 14k HP, 65% crit damage.

It is very fun to play, but Im not sure how the dps actually compares to standard zerker.,

When are they going to release content involving the elder dragons, or even stronger minions of the elder dragons?

Teq didn’t really involve any story, but I still enjoyed that week because at least the lore behind him is real instead of some random villain who no one even knows. (who is scarlet?)
