The plan is to have the Salma District (ie, Home) destroyed so that it can be rebuilt to accommodate player Housing, including a Stable for mounts, and a Vestibule (a place to store build templates).

If any of you believe that’s all going to happen, I’ve a bridge you might be interested in buying.

Agreed in general, DR overall theme and style should not change, but it’d be ok to see some changes to the layout (also, wouldn’t it be nice to visit the DR catacombs from the beginning of Ghosts of Ascalon?).

In regards to LA…I’ve mixed feelings about it. I did like the pirate-y version…it had a life to it even if it was at times an eye sore. The new version, stylistically did have potential, but failed in its overall implementation.

Better armor style.

The Greyhawk.9107

Free accounts are blocked from buying skimpy armors? O_O

For example, try buying sneakthief armor on TP on a free account.

You can get armor with that skin from drops too, and the human tier-three medium armor is even skimpier and is purchasable directly from an npc. F2P accounts are in no real way “Blocked” from getting “skimpy” armors.

Mind you, I absolutely would love to see more GW1 based armors and weapons. Arenanet could only benefit from using classic skins. But people complaining about the armors in this game because they don’t show enough kitten is really whiny. Plus its not like most the GW1’s sets were much better in those regards.

Personally, I think the Scarlet storyline was awesome. The destruction of Lion’s Arch was epic. And the effects on the world were entertaining with each episode.

But, even if you hated it, it’s better than what’s happening now . . . which is a lot of nothing.

There’s a difference between the storyline of LS1, and the character Scarlet Briar herself. Overall, its Briar whom has the greater share of our collective ire.

The new LA is ok. The Old LA was AMAZING.

The new LA is ok. The Old LA was AMAZING.

Agreed.

I have nothing against the new LA. It is serviceable. Not bad looking. Overall a decent city.

The old LA had character. It and Divinity’s Reach are my two all time favorite towns in games.

The old LA was full of whimsical buildings, color and hidden areas. People congregated there to socialize.

It’s like they had a version of New Orleans with old, handcrafted turn of the century buildings and carpet bombed it and turned the city into downtown Dallas, full of white concrete and serviceable, modern buildings.

Agreed on all three of the above points.
I don’t really dislike current LA, but it really could be better. Current LA is more like…a resort, rather than a seaport city. It mostly doesn’t come across as a place where people live and work, but rather someplace they visit. If nothing else, the place needs some more kittening buildings, lots more. And more lion statues.
As far as the OP’s remark about events taking place in LA, thats just not going to happen. For better or for worse, the six cities are mechanically meant to be separate from the world maps where events and combat occur.

So, you watched an optional summary cinematic for Living Story’s first season, and its as if Anet shot your dog. Whats the point of this?
Anet simply couldn’t make LS1 re-playable, like they did with LS2, due to both its largely experimental and persistent nature. I won’t argue that the story line was far from perfect, and Briar herself was unbelievable and completely over the top (though, kitten if it didn’t feel great to put that rabid kitten down). However, LS1 had a lot of very enjoyable group content.

The Greyhawk.9107

I don’t hang out in LA anymore. It used to be the spot to go to see and be seen. To stand around by the bank and talk, dance, look for names you recognize, see call outs for help in WvW and in general, socialize. Then they trashed it first by making all servers one server (and not exempting cities) then they trashed it again by destroying LA and designing it so spread out that the congregation spot was removed.

One thing that’s apparent is the lack of understanding that people want to socialize and being careless of this aspect in designing or changing the game. It’s communities forged that hold people more than shinies or achievement points. ANet consistently doesn’t realize this. If they did, they would respect communities and their gathering spots instead of removing them. They would add things that support communities instead of neglecting them in favor of adding more outfits, gliders and gemstore weapon skins.

You are kidding right?

The new Lions arch is head and shoulders above the old horrible boat arch, honestly i was not sorry to see that old place go, it was hideous and was a total disservice to the original GW1 lions arch..

I’d take this new bank over that claustrophobic last one we had any day.

I have to ask, do we know for sure that NC put the ca-bosh on various Canthan based content, do we actually know for sure that Asian players complained about Cantha being too much of a mix? Or was that just a widely accepted myth? I mean, the giant hole that people say was where the Canthan district was supposedly meant to be actually dates as far back as the first GW2 trailer. Something just seems kinda off with the “No Cantha” claim made in that merged thread.

How Do you Feel About Multiple Guilds?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: The Greyhawk.9107

The Greyhawk.9107

When I first heard about the multi-guild system way back before gw2 was even in alpha, I was kinda kittened off. At the time I was a struggling GL of a guild that was apart of an alliance that functioned as a super guild, and the idea of joining multiple guilds sounded like a nightmare. To me, guilds should be about camaraderie and community before all else, something that needs a degree of loyalty in order to function. And it seemed to me that you couldn’t get that loyalty if people could be in multiple guilds.

I was wrong.

To be quite frank, if a player is so inclined, a single guild system is no more able to promote (or force) loyalty and general activity than a multi guild system is. They would guild hop just as much in either system. I’ve come to understand that its better to give the players freedom, to play with as many of their friends as they can, to better find where they best fit, to branch out into multiple aspects and niches of the game.
On that latter note, I think the OP is completely off base in his assertion that a multi-guild system robs a guild of purpose and identity. Rather, it frees guilds to better establish what it will focus on, as opposed to being forced to be everything yet nothing (to clarify, I’m not saying that broad PvX guilds can’t work or have an identity, but good ones do tend to be few and far between). Just as players can have a guild for each of their interests, guilds are better able to focus on specific aspects of the game, giving them a more established purpose and identity.

In regards to alliances, well, I can’t say I’m a fan of the idea anymore. As I mentioned I was apart and later helped lead an alliance that was meant to function as a super-guild, something I’ve come to disdain. With how it worked in gw1, alliances tended to be either a mostly meaningless chat option, or overshadowed the guilds they were made up of, making the guilds meaningless (sorry if that doesn’t make sense, its 5am). Overall I’m rather wary of including an alliance option for guilds, but if there is someway of keeping the guilds important than the alliances I guess I don’t mind too much. Its not as if I still do that Guild Leader horsekitten anymore.

I remember a game I played some time ago, where I was placed in this massive world that was just waiting for me to explore it. I started running and exploring and it feelt like a never ending world. But was it really? No of course not. Was it huge? Maybe, but compared to other games not that amazing. So what made it feel so big and massive? Well I remember looking at the map and said “I want to go there”. So I did, I walked all the way over there, it took some time but it was worth it because that place had something new and unique for that part of the map.

Surely, you think, it must get annoying having to walk everywhere and that was true to some extent. Walking and riding was the primary way of transport. But then there were taxis, where, for a small sum you could get tranportation from one city to another. That took some time aswell, you still had to move all the way to your destination, but at a faster rate. I specially remember the train, yes the train. There were an in-game train with a trainstation and timetable for transport between citys.

My point is that even if there were a vast amount of different transport possiblitys none included teleportation. There were teleportaion but under strictly limited use. The fact that if you wanted to go somewhere you hade to actually go there and that gave substance and a feeling of how big the world actually were. In gw2, that feeling does not exist. Even if the world is massive there is no feeling of scale or size. Teleporting to where ever you want when ever, takes away that feeling of size. For example, who ever uses the portals thats placed here and there in gw2? No one, because it’s just faster and simpler to open your map and klick where you want to go.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask if gw2 removed all waypoints IF they were replaced with alternatives like hot air balloons, azura trains, sylvari ships or char subways and of course azura portals. It should of course be easy to travel, and it should not take a huge amount of time. Would it not be sensible to offer some of the overwhelming amount of convenience currently in the game for a bit more substance? Would it really hurt if it took 2 minutes to travel from divinitys reach to black citadel in a hot air balloon or the ship from lions arc to the groove?

The way points are guilty of this. Everything is pixels away because of them. You completely loss that feeling of being far from civilization with so many wp. I really miss gw1 for this.

Hey, guess what! GW1 is still around! So go play that and leave us alone.

Don’t use the waypoints if you prefer running from place to place.

Stop saying this, you know the OP cannot do this. The whole game content is build about the fact you can TP instantly around the world. The event boss need TP and dungeons arent enough rewarding for the time you would need to travel to them.
I totally agree with the OP, but sadly I think it would need too much change.

No, we won’t stop saying this, because forcing EVERYONE to conform to a small groups idea of what an “adventure world” should be is absolute horsekitten. You don’t like playing a game where teleporting is an option? Then don’t let the door hit your kitten on the way out. The rest of us will happily continue to use waypoints as they exist in GW2.

I am for doing away with way points. In my opinion, they are one of several systems that take the feeling of adventure out of the online world.

This was the way MMORPGs used to be (and were the best times I had playing online games)

Do the rest of us a favor and stop trying to take away things that are helpful to the rest of us just because it hurts your subjective immersion.

The recent news that the effects are coming back – and will be optional – makes me ..cautiously optimistic. It certainly seems to have placated this thread into silence.

And yet.. I can’t help feeling like this thread really deserves two things before it feels like there’s closure:

i) we need to see the proof of the pudding, so to speak. We need to see what the effects look like once they’re “restored” and we need to see what options are available. There have been no end of rational, useful ideas presented here. Will the visual options be comprehensive, or merely a check box that toggles between “original” and “nerfed” states? This will say a lot about whether real future-planning has gone into the visual effects system, or if this is a knee-jerk reaction to placate the playerbase.

ii) there needs to be an official response here. It needs to be here. And it needs to confirm anet’s commitment to Colin’s statement: that any future visual adjustments will be provided as options via this new visual options system they’re developing, rather than globally enforced. There needs to be some indication that a lesson has been learned here, that progress has been made, that a thread like this will never ever have to happen again, at least on the subject of visual adjustments. There will always be areas of the game where developers and players butt heads, have lengthy discussions and come to some middle-ground. The game will continue to evolve and there will be hiccups. That’s normal. But let it not be on this one subject. Let this particular subject be concluded here. Let this be an achievement we’ve all reached after a long journey. That would be closure.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The visual nerfs thing was a request feature by a whole lot of people. Some people don’t like it, but I’m pretty sure I saw more people complain about noise than I ever did about the visual nerfs.

The so called “visual noise reduction” did absolutely NOTHING to clean up boss and zerg fights. Not. A. Single. kittening. THING. Fireball gets turned into a pebble, but the impact particles, which is WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM, has not been changed at all. And how much did Chaos Shield and the Ele Auras actually add to the problem? Be honest.
No, the Visual Nerf only diminished the quality of the game, rather than improve it. And as far as there not being enough people being against the nerf as opposed to for it? Bullkitten. There’s an eighteen page thread that’s been on the front page fairly consistently that speaks against your claim.

Hints about a new continent being added

I mean, look at our world and how big Eurasia is compared to any other continent.

Afro-eurasia was even bigger…. why Suez Canal? Why?!

No new continents until the current map is done. Then, I want to go east or north far more interesting that elona or canthi (ok I admit interest in echovald) would be forsaken cliffs, thunder cove, Olympus, foundry, frozen gulley, fjord, and not real – that direction looks the best to me

So is “Not Real” really what that place is called, or is it a placeholder or something?

The map is part of a datamine from S2, specifically the floor texture in Durmand Priory I believe. Anyway I don’t think the map was ever truly meant to be seen in such detail so the authenticity and reliability is questionable. Possibly some developers might simply have put placeholder names in there, or just random things they thought were interesting. As far as I know we haven’t had developer confirmation regarding the overall accuracy of the map.

I do hope that’s the case.

The map of the world actually has an interesting tidbit to it – you can very easily reposition the continents to fit together in a pangea-like state. It’s not very odd for continental Tyria to be so huge – I mean, look at our world and how big Eurasia is compared to any other continent.

I don’t think the idea of a super continent is my issue with this map. I think it has more to do with the proportions of the map.
