Taxiing from breach to breach a symptom

In the end someone will have to do the defenses to move the meta event forward anyway. You can’t just jump from maps to maps to get breaches. At some point you’ll run out the map readied.

People taxiing are just leeching other’s work to finish some useless collection faster. Why can’t some enjoy doing a defense for the sake of doing it, instead of doing it to be the first to obtain some ugly shiny pants ?

[Suggestion] Class Trials

Dance for me, little thiefprincess, dance for me.
These seem like artificial challenges with no relevant ingame background.

They remind me of a students joke:

If a chemistry and a math student are asked to learn the phone book of New York by heart, the math student asks: “why?” and the chemistry student: “until when?”

Funny, I my country the students in medicine are the ones who answer “until when ?”.

On a more serious note, this is something that should be implemented as an upgrade to an hypothetical Guild Hall. People already suggested this during the relevant CDI. However, instead of building artificial challenges, whe should be given the tools to spawn ennemies in a controlled environment to test guildmates.

When newbs in my guild need to be taught how to play their class, I teach them myself instead of relying on some artificial exercise. People don’t want to feel they are at school when they play game.

Dervish the Next Class?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VodCom.6924

VodCom.6924

Some thoughts I’d like to add to the discussion.

Let’s start with the quite obvious : guardian was designed as a fusion of the monk, the paragon and the dervish with all religious elements stripped away to make it compatible with agnostic playable races of GW2.

In terms of roles, the guardian is well suited for the support role with shouts (paragon) and the bruiser that uses boons (dervish) and the altruistic healing thing (monk… somehow).

So far, the dervish is covered.

Now let’s look at the less obvious : the guardian works well when you pile up as much boons as possible. The more the better. The class mechanic is the timed use of virtues to change the flow of battle.

In GW1, the dervish worked well when you timed your flash enchantments well and wisely fuel your tear down skill with the right enchantment at the right time. That is a much more subtle way of approaching things. You have to manage two things (flash enchantments and tear downs) instead of one (virtues).

Also the dervish had a nice emphasis on elemental and holy damage, which would translate in GW2 as condition damage (i.e damage that ignore armour). AFAIK, the guardian in incapable of dealing decent condition damage.

Boons are like the opposition of conditions (duh! >_< ) and NOT the translation of enchantments from GW1 to GW2. There is actually no equivalent mechanic in GW2 of something that has an effect only when added and removed and not effect in between(bar aegis).

Conclusion : As long as boons are the only available buffs of GW2, there is no gameplay room for a dervish like class. As soon as we get feeders for buffing ourselves, a mystic scyte using class can be considered.

However, NEVER expect the dervish to make it to GW2 as a copy paste of GW1. A dervish in GW1 is a human centered class. To survive in GW2, it means we’ll have to remove all gods avatars and all religious references.

For those who never played GW1 : Dervish gameplay explained

Jumping puzzles should give at least a rare

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VodCom.6924

VodCom.6924

To OP :

Imagine this for a minute : in about 15 minutes, I can complete 5 jumping puzzles (Urmaug, under new management, and 3 puzzles in caledon forest) and you can repeat the process for each toon you have .

I have 6 toons on my account, this means that in about and hour and a half I can collect no less than 30 rare items. As a comparison, following the world boss train yields you on average 10 rare items over the same period of time. In fact, it’s almost as profitable as running AC P3 in the non-zerk way, except that it’s once per character instead of once per account.

Are you now reconsidering your suggestion ? ’Cause it seems to be quite harsh as a measure. I agree to buff JP chests but not this much.

Necros are part of the meta in WvW. In PvE they are efficient until you want to step in the speed clear meta, here they are not highly desired.

Necros are in essence a self reliant class with few tools to enhance the group. However, they have a degree of autonomy in PvE match by very few classes.

In low level PvP necros tend to be powerhouses, however in very high level PvP they tend to be left aside because of poor mobility.

Engies are according to some (I do not have an engie myself) a difficult class to learn in the beginning but can be rapidly mastered once you get used to the large number of skills available to you. They perform well in all areas of the game while not being at the top of the food chain in any.

In short, engineers are Jack of all trades of GW2.

All classes are able to reach high dps numbers. Don’t make your choice of class on dps potential alone.

Levels 1-60 are boring.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VodCom.6924

VodCom.6924

The ways to level are the following:
-character switch at the end of dungeons
-heart quests/exploration
-pvp knowledge tomes
-dungeons (story mode)
-WvW

The issue is that heart quests get boring the third time through, and are very slow levelling. Events are inconsistent so you can’t really rely on them for levelling. PvP tomes are not frequent enough. In games like Rift you play a few or maybe more PvP games and it’s enough XP to level up.

Dungeons don’t become available until level 30, but 1-30 is the slowest and most boring of all. Even at level 30, AC story mode gets very old the 10th time through on one character.

WvW is inconsistent. If you find a big zerg of people it’s reasonable levelling, but often it’s a lot of getting zerged ON. Even in a good group it’s very slow.

My solution: the game is old now, and lots of the main part of the game starts at level 80.
[…]
It’s just really tedious to get a character to where the game actually starts lev 80)

With all due respect :

It is perfectly possible to stockpile leveling tomes, skill scrolls and gold with your main characters(s) then create a level 1 toon and skyrocket it to level 80 with all atttributes unlocked.

Don’t be ridiculous. You ALREADY have ALL the TOOLS to bypass the leveling phase.

Besides, I recently created a ranger and I find it interesting to actually DO all the dungeons with my low level ranger just to learn how to use it properly in dungeons and to step away from the bearbow cliché.

Switching toons, while faster does not teach you how to master a new class.

I think this might play out like the bonus missions from gw1, where you play as one of the iconic npc characters; this could be achieved through a magical spell, assuran science, or a mixture of both, but effectivly, we will see a flashback of caithe’s past, by playing it ourselfs. I have mixed feelings about this, it was cool to play as togo and the rest, but I hated having their builds and armor forced upon me. Still, if anet did go this rout, it would be cool.

While you suffer from an atrocious bias in the way you describe controversies, I must admit you managed to sum up the forums nicely.

Though I really think the gear check and berserker meta should require an entire page worth of explanation without the trolling and name calling nonsense. Think about it as a giant collaborative blogpost. I really wish we could settle this discussion forever.

Hybrid did a nice description of the reasons why condition sucks in speed clear. Woodenpotatoes did a longish video explaining why healing sucks in PvE. These should be the starting point of why the berserker meta emerged and why it’s going to stay this way for a very long time.

Otherwise the meta for warriors would be rifle + longbow instead of Axe/mace + GS. Or did I miss something ?

IIRC, some people (including myself) have been asking Anet to adress the issue of over-dominance of berserker gear and melee combat over more balanced stat combos and ranged combat respectively

Sound like our pleas have been answered. Berserker gear is for the really good players that can dodge everything (note : I am not a good player by a long shot) and you are incentivised to bring both melee and ranged weapons (ele can use FGS or bow or axe as a backup for their dagger/focus build).

While the boss is infuriating to fight without stability, it address a number of issues in the GW2 gameplay. Kudos for that.

Why there's only 1 useful gear stat..

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: VodCom.6924

VodCom.6924

To OP : do you realise it’s the 1000th thread started on that matter and the topic is one that has the highest probability of starting trolls fame wars name caliing etc…

Now, for your interest :

Berserker is the top of line stat combo in PVE ONLY! (Try to let this sink in your mind first). WvW has plenty of room for tanky sets (even nomad set can be used as a niche armor for light armour commanders) and condition oriented sets.

Secondly, while berserker stat set is highly advertised by all the player that speed clear content, it is not the most used stat set in pve. Simply because berserker is a high risk high reward tactic and the average players cannot manage such a level of risk. Many of my guildies are using valkyrie+emerald or knight armour or celestial for some ele.

Thirdly, this over dominance of berserker in dungeons (remember IN DUNGEONS) is tied to the encounter design and engine limitations : having more than one condition oriented build in a group is counter productive because of maximum stack of bleeds.
Add on top of this the inflated hp pool some bosses have and their low umber of highly telegraphed attacks and you have all the conditions required to ensure berserker success.

Your HP and armour are wet paper but you can dodge all the bosses’ attacks. Attacks you cannot dodge, you can still reflect, and with stealth you can skip annoying trashmobs that could kill you otherwise. So why bother with increasing armour if you have no use for it ? Go for DPS and complete dungeon faster to get your reward quicker.

I think I covered your interrogations.

/thread

PS : a lot of people have been pushing recently to increase the role of condition builds in PvE, with moderated success so far but that’s still something (think about mordrem husks and the evolved jungle wurm).

PPS : berserker is “optimal”. It doesn’t mean other stat combos are not “viable”. AFAIK, my ele is running valk armour with opal trinkets and is doing just fine. Don’t feel guilty running around in knight.

I prefer them releasing this content over the dragon….so far it’s boring. WELL MADE…but boring. Only good part about the main story is the fact u got to see some GW1 stuff in it. Other then that..meh.

I already knew about the egg..about glint..we already know there’s a dragon..we already know something’s up with the dude caring the egg. From now on i consider it just filler..

…but Rytlock..u have no clue what went wrong, where he went, what happened there, who did he meet…also the fact that his sidestory has really deep roots inside GW1 and he is much more loved the most characters ingame. The ryt sidestory has huge potential over the dragon main story which is sad if u ask me.

This filler has to be here because :

  • Not everyone is super familiar with GW2 lore let alone GW1 one (there is a reason why I was recently promoted “wikipedia officer” in my guild)
  • A story has to respect a narrative coherence. While I expected the master of peace to carry a dragon related item (like an egg or something else) it has to be confirmed ingame. I’d be really disappointed if I saw directly the master of peace pulling the egg out of his a** without being warned in Glint’s lair first, even though I expected him to carry the item.

VodCom.6924

So, Retaliation was bad, because it requires you to change your strategy, which is a good thing? What?

Anything that forces us to change our strategies is good. However in this particular case a little problem rose up :

  • Wolves applied retaliation to themselves. => Forces you to switch target
  • Wolves also applied retaliation to OTHER mordrems => You can’t hit any monster in fact, unless you have boon removal (some classes don’t)
  • Retaliation stacks and is easily applied by a mob of mordrem wolves. => You can’t win unless null field or spinal shivers.

All in all : if you are not a corruptor, you’re screwed. This is why Anet nerfed the wolves. Period.

Suggestion : Change the ability to only apply retaliation to the wolve itself and not its allies. Increase the cooldown of the shout to prevent perma-retaliation.

PSA: How Farming Works

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

VodCom.6924

The problem is that the (best) way to get most things / items / rewards is by grinding.

Grinding is the best way to get rewards only because it’s the only one.

I’m not going to expand too much on that topic : it’s common knowledge that devs lock their rewards behind grinding locks on purpose, so that people do not burn content too fast.

A shoddy but necessary tactic for any MMO.

No it’s not a necessary tactic. In fact most mmo’s I did play did not use this tactic.

What they usually do is having an RNG drop. An RNG that is a little easier to get but is only behind specific content. You want item X? Kill mob Y in that area over there.

You want that mini? Do that dungeon.

You want that mount, do that raid dungeon.

This way people can work directly towards the items. The RNG means it’s still something you need to repeat doing. But it’s completely different from the grind in GW2. Where many things can drop in many places (or don’t drop at all but you can only buy them for gold.. or cash). So you cant work directly towards them by doing some specific content. The way to get them is doing something else, whatever earns you the fastest gold and then buy it for that gold.

It appears there is a misunderstanding between us.

While this wiki article does not have the highest standards of the encyclopedia, let’s take this as a common basis.

What you call grind is “money grind” or “gold war”. What I call grind is the process of engaging in repetitive tasks to have a good chance of getting an item/reward.

RNG (especially low odds of RNG) is no better for me than a gold grind. In the end they both involve doing the same thing all over again.

PSA: How Farming Works

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

VodCom.6924

I’d like to put forward a middle-man opinion.

The OP has one good point : to prevent the economy to over-inflate we need to have two groups of players that are actively trading :

  • The dungeon clearers (generate cash and buy items)
  • The item providers (farmers or regular players selling their accumulated stock to get cash)

The taxes of the TP ensure that the amount of gold in the economy does not grow too fast and thus inflation remains in check.

HOWEVER! It does not mean that farming should not have diminishing returns.

Let me clarify : some farms have a natural diminishing return

  • Lemongrass
  • iron pig linen farm (nerfed nowadays)
  • Any other single item farm

Why is that so ? Because all farmer are competing on a single item. In these farms, the laxs of offer and demand work well. If too many farmers farm too much, either the price of the item they are farming will sink and/or the DR mechanic will kick in after some time, lowering their benefits.

Some other farms (I called them champ bag farms) don’t have such problems. Why ? The items they get are too diversified to really compete on the TP and the DR mechanism does not affect them. It means that the first hour of farming brings roughly the same amount of money as the 8th one or the 100th one.

Why should such thing be impossible ? After all, these farms are making the prices go down, right ? That’s beneficial for everyone, right ?

Well…. NO. See, an economy is much healthier for everyone if the inequalities of wealth are kept low. If such farms are allowed to continue, eventually the no-lives that spend entire days farming the game will concentrate in their hands all the wealth of GW2. And, by lowering the price of most of the tradable items, they also reduce the wealth of casual gamers that have patiently accumulated items that used to be costly before the farm took place.

That is the reason why the DR has been implemented in the game in the first place. To prevent no-lives to concentrate too much wealth. Farming Cursed Shores for an hour bring a bit of money. However the 8th hour you spend here will bring you less than the 1st one.

TL; DR : Farming is beneficial to the game as long as it has diminishing returns. Otherwise, farmer will concentrate in their hands all the wealth of the game, making it extremely frustrating for non-farming people. Recently nerfed farms (coil watch, CS tunnel, amber chests, fireheart ambers etc…) all shared this property of being DR proof and not really subjected to the laws of offer and demand, this is also why they were so successful.

This focus on dungeon is just the legacy of classic MMO game design model. You should not it obscure you.

I don’t mind the removal of retail on the wolves. My biggest issues with it previously were:

1) I main an ele, not a whole lot of boon stripping options (like 0)
2) Wolves rarely travel alone, and could stack the retail time
3) Low cool down on retail made stripping seem pointless as boon was quickly reapplied while strips have a much longer cool down

Not to mention the back-crits, which they seem to be able to repeatedly hit while you are facing them, in addition to the retail, just made for lots of frustration.

Good points.

However the lack of ways to deal with boon as an ele is a feature : it is supposed to be their kryptonite (supposedly the same way conditions are supposed to be hard to deal with for warriors and guards are weak to corruptors).

I know, I’d considered point out that eles were designed that way (per dev statements), but figured I didn’t really need to. CDI-Guilds- Raiding

in CDI

I’ve posted in this thread the few ideas I had to make raids better, if they’re implemented into GW2. Now, however, I’m going to be completely blunt and state what I want from this.

1. No Raids. I seriously think this is a bad idea and the wrong way for this game to go. Stop trying to be World of GuildWars 2, you’re just playing to your weaknesses.

2. No Endgame. Seriously, enough of this crap. The majority of this game isn’t at level 80, it’s levels 2-79. Do you find that part of the game to be so worthless that you feel it should be pressed through as fast as possible and then ignored? Level 80 already has new content, it’s called the Living Story. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

3. Improve The Main Game. Fix downscaling so that old levels are still challenging. Take some of those interesting boss ideas and toss them out into the world at large, I’m sure there’s a lot of fights that can use a revamp. Just don’t go Teq and 3-Wurm on it, it should fit the zone it’s put into.

There are games out there that have been churning out raids longer than GW2’s been around, and they’re better made for it than GW2 is. Stop trying to play their game, you’re not going to catch them. Guild Wars 2 was supposed to be something different.

Prove it.

With all due respect palador I think you have forgotten the purpose of a CDI. A CDI is a brainstorm where we can suggest ideas to improve existing formulas/content.

I think we all agree that GW2 should not copy the traditionnal WoW raid formula. However, it does not mean that GW2 should not have instanced challenging large group content. A vocal minority of players have been requesting this type of content since launch. It turns out that this minority includes a lot of players that are passionate about this game and do not want to ruin it.

Look at the proposal of of TTS on that matter : they suggest to implement an instanced version for each MB already in the game and have a tougher challenge in these instances. Does this really look like a WoW raid ? Not really.

The idea of multi-path instances that can be completed simultaneously or sequentially also goes in this direction : content that is inclusive and can accomodate groups of multiple sizes.

There are many other good ideas hidden in the arcanes of this CDI and I’m sure the devs have may more. None of us wants to recreate raids that require guild to be like military structures to be completed.

Just keep it up man and have faith

Edit : You have a point when you say : “consolidate what is already in the game before adding stuff”.

Are we sure it’s Rytlock?

The charr on the picture have the same hair and horns as Rytlock at least.

And the same beard, which is his unique feature that no other charr has.

Another thread said the symbol on the blindfold is the symbol of the Six Gods

Do you have the adress of the thread ? I can’t possibly find it

Found it! However, no way to get the original source of Koenig’s statement : why is this symbol the symbol of the Six ? The wiki page about the Six does not contain anything.

Incredible to see some people claiming that Anet removed content from the game in two years.

A lot has changed. Sadly most content from last year disappeared into oblivion, but this is going to change with LW S2. The game is much more streamlined and enjoyable than before and you are incentivised to experience all of its facets.

I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate for a minute :

Remember the artwork for the Dragon’s reach part 1 ? Have you actually ever seen Rytlock so kittened off tht he turned into a flaming charr ? NO!

So don’t get you hopes too high, otherwise you’ll crash with the hype train you’ve created.

He could have been blinded because of foefire or something less sexy.

[speculation mode on]
What is the marking on the blindfold ? Maybe it’s a good place to start investigation.

Quick recall :
Dealing damage requires 2 things :

  • a large damage potential (i.e berserker equipment)
  • a high damage uptime (heal and dodge as least as possible to attack as much as possible).

If you carry a berserker armour but dodges constantly because the mob is attacking you, no wonder it takes longer to kill.

About seraphs : yes they do have an inflated health pool.

Another one:

- Sometimes I get compliments from people in LA (like “Glorious shoulders looks great, nice character!” or “Nice choice of dyes/armor” “Where did you get that shoulder? it looks great on your character” etc and I just pretend I’m afk because I get embarrassed when I get compliments.

Sorry people! Your opinion is really important for me (and makes me smile) but I’m just too shy to answer/I don’t know how to answer a compliment
Also I’m afraid the conversation gets extended and forces me to pay attention to the game,if I’m standing in LA it is because I’m either checking my storage or inventory,or I’m reading the forums/browsing the web on my second monitor,so,I kinda pay attention to the game still and I know when people PM me,but I just pretend I’m afk for the reason I just said :P

A simple “Thanks!” is generally enough. When I compliment somebody’s avatar I feel equally as awkward and embarassed if I don’t get a reply, stuff like “They probably think I’m a creep now for checking out their character” usually floats through my head.

This.

A simple thanks is enough. We’re not expecting you to re-write Hamlet

First lv80, how should I gear up?

in Players Helping Players

VodCom.6924

On the topic of “what stats should I use ?”

It depends on what you are planning to do:

  • If you plan on speed clearing, your way is already defined and go for CoF. Get berserker armour with the tokens.
  • If you plan to do WvW, use badges to get the armour corresponding to the meta build of you class
  • If you plan to do PvX, either buy multiple armour or stick with knight/valkyrie/celestial. These stats set are polyvalent.

Returning player. Advice would be nice.

VodCom.6924

My advices :

  • Level your toons, the majority of the new and interesting content is for level 80
  • Finish your personnal story, then play the living story season 2. You might got lost in the process. If you don’t understand what is going on, check the wiki.
  • Take some time to discover your wardrobe and the collection achievements. If you are a collecting person, your chance to shine is now.
  • If you plan to get started with dungeons, find a guild that will guide you in your first steps, and do not hesitate to read guides out there. The meta is now firmly in place and deviance from it is not really appreciated by some.

EU vs NA

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: VodCom.6924

VodCom.6924

AFAIK, the meta is the same in both continents (I mean it’s the same game we have right ?).

EU might have a more conservative approach, since when we are pugging, we might not always be able to communicate properly so we stick to old stuff we know works (even if it is clunky like the anchor guardian build).

My statement is valid only for the pugging environment, since players from both continent speedclear the same way.

I was able to give some old 15 slots bads to a guildie. Are you sure that bags are account bound ?

I think they are tradable like any other item.

The number of bags a character can carry is character bound for sure, but the bags themselves…. ?

What we all want

Anet stopped using its original technology for dialogue shortly after launch.

The new technology does not include a functionnality to skip dialogue.

Anet is aware that people want to skip cinematics. Solving this will take time because of engine limitation.

I think I covered it all.
