The Real Problem in sPvP

The reason why PvP in this game and almost all games is toxic is because of the incentives. The teammates we get are randomly picked, we see them for 10-15 min. during this match then are likely to never see them again. The expectation is for them to do what is tactically correct, make optimal decisions, etc. We expect people to do what seems obvious and correct to us and that comes as natural. If they don’t there is nothing we can do about it except hope we don’t play with them again. Any advice we give in team chat isn’t going to be thorough enough to help the other person improve and even if it is the match is probably over by then. In a 10-15 min. anonymous instant gratification game type like this flaming other people has no downsides and helping them has no upsides.

This thread is unnecessary, OP should suggest a way to create meaningful relationships in PvP, or a way to improve communication with tactical commands that are easy for beginners to grasp. Both of these will make friendlier player interactions, “my son I am disappoint” threads like these won’t change people’s behavior.

How big is the health pool while downed? What percentage of health does the player start at?

I believe the health pool is twice as big as normal, and health starts at 75%, I’d like to make sure.

I played a match on Foefire last night and none of my teammates would fight on point lol. They’d cap sides and 10 seconds later enemy would decap both because they all pushed mid. Miraculously we won 500-400 not sure how.

I think people having a high starting MMR can be a problem if they have to face really good teams, maybe start them off lower on the leaderboard. More importantly there has to be a mandatory guide that explains how to fight on point and rotate. The basic tutorial about stomping and shooting the treb is not good enough, they need to learn map awareness. Maybe post a link to Josh Davis’ guide and make it available as a link in the game

My biggest woes are; stomp/res awareness there’s so many times when we’ve basically won mid but someone needs stomping or ressing and the guy you are shouting at through your screen is just swinging their hammer and suddenly the other team get a player back up and the fight you’ve just essentially won takes a 180.

But yeah people abandoning points/using hotjoin tactics etc are big problems atm

You are right, sometimes a downed enemy has 10% health and my teammates do a 3 second stomp. Or they stomp without stability against classes with CC on downed. Or they try to stomp a teleport class like a thief or mesmer instead of cleaving the corpse, or they try to cleave down warriors and necros instead of stomping. I have to give kudos to ANet for making it a deep and complex system but some players throw away fights when they screw it up.

We should release a guide that explains health pools and skills in the downed state, it would help new players alot.

so end of match win we used to get a box with (I never paid attention) what like 6 or 7 items (usually dupes but hey) not just from dungeons but all over, and glory.

now, we have to play for ages, do dungeons all over and in the end buy stuff to apply to existing armor/weapons we win as our supposed rewards in pvp.

lots more bloodstone/fragments/dragonite which carries no inherent gold value so theres that.

give it a try they said. we think you’ll like it they said.

think maybe they were referring to someone else other than ppl who actually played pvp. :S

This takes a while to do so it may not be worth it, you can craft Toxic Stones/Oils/Crystals using bloodstone dust and sell them on the TP.

It also puts autoattack on cooldown when it’s interrupted. I think this is a bug because the description only talks about skills that have a cooldown getting an increased cooldown.

How big of an impact will the nerf to this skill have on less skilled sPvP and top 100 tPvP? How will it impact spirit ranger as a build and as a part of the meta? I only have 25 hotjoin matches as a ranger so I don’t have an opinion on this.

When I first started playing PvP I started with hotjoin, and thinking bigger is better I played a lot of 8v8. Over time I started reading on the forums and saw people saying how bad 8v8 was, how zergy it was, and with that I moved on to 5v5. I never turned back after seeing how much better 5v5 was, and today I’ve moved to pugging tPvP. Each step I’ve made has brought me closer to a true PvP experience, and if I’d known better I wouldn’t have played any 8v8, I’d have learned the ropes with 5v5. Thank you ANet for removing one of these intermediate steps and not letting people (especially noobs) get pulled into 8v8. I’m looking forward to practicing builds in 5v5 arenas and having more matches to choose from.

Griefing in activities (Crab Toss/Keg Brawl)

I agree on the Crab Toss scenario that it’s basically griefing. You can tell when the player has singled you out in particular because they keep targeting you even when you don’t have the crab. The worst offender I’ve seen was in a match where there were two players from the same guild. One seemed to be the designated crab carrier while the second took the fishing pool and basically attacked anybody who was the next highest in score. (Which turned out to be me after a few minutes.) I only took offense when the fisher started taunting me in /say about how I couldn’t win, and I replied that his guildie must REALLY suck if he needed him to run interference for him. He then started going off at me, which ironically distracted him enough that he couldn’t run interference effectively anymore and I ended up winning. XD

Keg Brawl is less clear-cut. Since it’s a team game, having a defender for the keg runner whose sole objective is to impede people trying to stop the runner is a legitimate strategy. (Particularly if you notice that one player on the enemy team is very skilled, and by shutting him down, you vastly increase your team’s chance of victory.)

Actually the only other repeatable achievement I can think of is the Salvage one, and guess what? It is capped.

Also keep in mind that no one is even close to hitting the cap yet, so it is not really that much of an issue.

There are people close to the cap, one person who was on the top 10 six weeks ago had 8.1k daily AP the cap will apply some time in the next few months. I wish I didn’t have to grind to 10k to benefit from it though I only have 4.8k from dailies.

Say the time zone is NA prime time and one or two maps are queued either EBG or home border. Comparing different servers and different tiers would they split up their groups in different ratios, example five groups of 20 or two groups of 50? How would they do it? Or is it all the same across servers and tiers?

Guardian stolen mace head crack is a 4 second daze. I don’t think this skill is significantly stronger than the guardian one, not enough to require a nerf. Feel free to counter my claim I haven’t done an in depth comparison on the two.

I like SharpShot’s idea in the first post, I feel like expanding on the tournament win titles and assigning a little more achievement points to them will both help add a sense of prestige and individualism to the rewards. I also like bhagwad’s idea about exclusive titles for tournament ranking, and both should be done.

Example for SharpShot’s idea:

125 tournament wins = Phantom I (10 AP stacking)
250 tournament wins = Genius II (15 AP stacking)
375 tournament wins = Paragon III (20 AP stacking)
500 tournament wins = Champion Legionnaire (25 AP stacking)

For bhagwad’s idea, create PvP seasons like they were talking about in the CDI thread, at the end of each season:

top 100 = Tournament Challenger (60 AP, not stacking)
top 50 = Tournament Soldier (70 AP, not stacking)
top 25 = Tournament Veteran (80 AP, not stacking)
top 10 = Tournament Master (90 AP, not stacking)
top 5 = Tournament Legend (100 AP, not stacking)

I’m from DB and I’m not discouraged by the fact that I may have to wait to get a Mistforged weapon. The guild groups in T2 and T1 are so skilled and there are so many more fights that it’s more fun, if I could choose myself I’m fine with getting 6th and no Mistforged weapon in return for more fights/fun.

So many internet hotshots in this thread, all of you who think there isn’t a JP etiquette make it seem like a PvE vs. WvW debate. I’m a WvWer and I never attack anyone doing the JP because it doesn’t make sense, it’s a waste of time for everyone involved. There are tons of places to 1v1 where you don’t get a terrain advantage or first hit advantage and you can fight people with a similar skill level rather than PvE scrubs. You guys just derive pleasure from inconveniencing other people.

Also if there aren’t any unwritten rules in WvW that means I can troll GvG happening in the arena right, after all red is dead. This selective hearing you guys have isn’t going to get you far if PvEers decide to interrupt your sacred GvGs.

Let us assume that the upper mid 50s is rank 58. All of the following numbers are known to us.

r1-49 = 796,500
r50-58 = 600,000
r1-58 = 1,396,500 (total rank required for r58)

All of the ranks before 39 will stay the same.
r58 – r39 = 1,396,500 – 271,500 = 1,125,000 (total rank required for r39-80)

To acquire 1,125,000 rank for the period of r39-80, this is how the thresholds might be set. This is my own prediction.

r39-48 = 20,000 per rank (200k)
r49-58 = 25,000 per rank (250k)
r59-68 = 30,000 per rank (300k)
r69-78 = 35,000 per rank (350k)
r79 = 40,000 (40k)

total r39-80 = 1,140,000

If the dev was accurate in saying that all the “upper mid 50s” players will have Dragon rank, this is likely what the rank requirements will look like. Please let me know about any mistakes in the calculations and let us know what you think the thresholds might be.

I think the reward for rank chests and PvP gear is having skins in the wardrobe. I can’t imagine them changing the reward from rank chests in a significant way, I think it’s a safe bet to open the chests. Save one as a souvenir from the past. <3

Rank up chests and diminishing returns

At 30+ the reward for ranking up is a large rank chest. This is fine, however it’s value becomes progressively lower and lower until it’s negligible.

30-39 = 15k rank for 1 chest
40-49 = 45k rank for 1 chest
50-59 = 75k rank for 1 chest
60-69 = 150k rank for 1 chest
70-79 = 450k rank for 1 chest
80 = 750k rank for 1 chest

It should be changed so the same proportion of rank earned gives one chest. If 15k rank gives a chest for wolf it should give 3 chests for tiger, 5 chests for bear, etc. If this isn’t possible because of how it affects the economy (I don’t buy this because 40+ PvPers are a fraction of the community) at least make tiger give 2 chests, bear give 3 chests, etc. What I know for sure is if I got r71 and got a large rank chest I’d be bitter lol.

OP hit the nail on the head, legendaries aren’t unique items. Its a stack of T6 mats, a few stacks of ectos, world comp, a few specific stacks of mats, and a rare exotic. It’s the most uncontroversial reward I’ve seen, I’m more bothered by the fact they’re giving out legendaries instead of prize money. Also in the invitational tournament people got exclusive trophy finishers. All of us have two finishers we can’t use that are reserved for a grand total of 10 people. Where were all the upset people back then.

Personally I agree with the OP, I think all gear and skill unlocks should be available in PvP without any work. However, if ANet decides that they have to implement skill unlocks in PvP, we should pay attention to how much effort is required. If unlocking the 13th trait costs 1g for each character, I’ll say fine, it’s not ideal but it’s not unreasonable. If on the other hand it costs 10g for the 13th trait on one character, it will be too much work and too expensive.

TLDR: I think that free > 1g > 10g.

I think it’s not retroactive because we got rank chests for all our rank ups. WXP chests were added as a feature when players received nothing for WXP ranks.

I agree with you on rank and glory the incentives were messed up before when mindless zerging in hotjoin would give 200+ points per round and skyhammer farmers made 300 rank and glory in 5 min. or less. They tried to fix it by making the winning team get more at the end of the match and by buffing soloq and teamq to be the best ways to earn rank and people who had thousands of rounds won in the past don’t get anything. Good intentions bad execution.

Mr. Corpening I have a huge suggestion from GW1, make an audible sound for calling targets. I want a high pitched sound effect that plays for all party members and sounds the same, it should not be a yelled dialogue based on race and gender, and its volume should be unform, it should not be louder or softer based on location. I want my teammates and myself to always know when a new target is called especially in the middle of combat.

EG is a PvX guild from what I understand but I’ve seen them field 25-30 in the past few weeks on SoR.

Before we wanted even matches so ANet decided to match the servers strictly in triplets, and strangely enough this matchup is 7-9. Now that being said this is because SoR’s rating needs time to adjust, it will drop out of T3 next week or the week after. Now this is the part that creates controversy: should ANet do things like make a judgment call and put SoR in a T4 match this week in anticipation of them losing rating? Seems reasonable but I’m not certain.

A lot of people like that hater from Mag don’t like DB because it has SEA guilds. We also have only 2 EU guilds on weekends and 1 on weekdays. Don’t be kitten just because you don’t outcoverage us in all time zones.
