and have they played and succeeded with mesmer in recent tournaments?

and if they were, were they using various builds? it’s like you completely skimmed over that part.

PvE is more Cooperative than Competitive. Maybe Stronghold can satisfy your need for competitive PvE.

ya when I did organised wvw I was just set in the backline as ranged dps and veil/time warp slave and sometimes either pulled with focus or you could run in quickly with your leap and immobilise a bunch of people to be bursted. i mean generally you could either stick around the raid leader so you could receive boons and healing or splinter off to pick off stragglers, though mesmers were pretty **** at that compared to thieves so we generally just stuck around the melee.

but I mean, that was like … probably over a year ago so tactics probably changed since then.

Mesmer: Shatter, Blurred Signet/Powerblock, Phantasm Stunlock, Pure Mantra One-shot, Condi-Shatter, etc to name a few that are actually used in sPvP for various roles.

i’m too lazy to search, what mesmer builds are actually being used in the (lol) “high-end” pvp tournaments? are mesmers even being played? I remember some of the popular mesmer mains being BHBs and rerolling thieves a few months back because their class sucked.

Any greatsword camping mesmers are certainly no good at all.

in zerg wvw you stick mostly on GS and have sw/f in your off-set to pull people together or off towers or if you need to mitigate damage with blurred frenzy, but you mostly just function as ranged DPS since your whole clone mechanic basically might as well not even exist in WvW.

I think you haven’t played the game (outside PvE) for far too long to actually grasp its current state. Therefore, I can only resort to agree to disagree

In my opinion, there are skilled people on both sides of the game. The good ones adapt well and learn to enjoy the game as a whole. The sad ones are cynical about the part that they don’t actively play and generally disregard others’ opinions about it.

I disregard GW2 pvp because it’s trash and it’s comical how ANet want it to be an esport, especially after watching real esports and comparing the two.

On the other hand, the Competitive part of the game

Umm… my original post was talking about the complaints in the ele sub-forum, which are about ele’s build problems in three game modes. I think it’s fair to look at a class in different point of view, and not just PvE dungeons.

the build problems of being powerful in all three modes and being able to use a whole array of different weapons.

being locked in to certain traits just comes with the territory of “do I want my build to actually be decent or not” and this applies to like any game with builds ever.

Mesmer wise, they have way more builds in WvW and sPvP. I find they are very interesting. Even Sandy does not always use phantasmal builds.

“run PU, shatter or be bad” is hardly “way more builds”.

my mistake, in large scale WvW you run triple glamours and function basically as ranged DPS with your GS.

Mesmer has many interesting trait setups,

not really. you’re pretty much always traiting mantras ad you’re always taking phantasmal fury and either blade training or in rare cases duelist’s discipline. then you decide whether you want warden’s feedback and glamour traiting or if you prefer compounding power w/phantasmal haste and illusionist’s celerity, and these builds all play basically identical to each other.

gw2 pvp is garbage so I don’t care about that, though I’m pretty sure the optimal mesmer build there is literally just playing another class (or if you’re really persistent, shatter).

Ele only has two roles: Straight Damage, or Sustain

I have yet to figure out how having many different “viable” builds translates into fun.

because scrolling over my gear and reading “valkyrie” makes me feel giddy inside

In PvE (solo and group play), warriors can have pure damage or condi or support (ps/ea). For ele, it’s either 6 in Air or 6 in Fire. Diversity is very limited.

strange, pretty sure d/f, staff and sc/d + lh builds were all viable

and to be honest, the “diversity” of warrior builds which force me to carry two sets of gear isn’t that interesting to me, if anything it’s annoying and i’d kill for a template option.

The key to lasting, and really challenging content is not being completely predictable. for AI, that means a certain amount of randomness.

A boss with a number of different skills it uses both in melee and at ranged which are clearly choreographed and aren’t always used at set periods.

i.e. Lupicus

that’s good design.

and yes, we want more of it.

the problem with dungeons is old content, not all of the boring rehashed garbage people bring up all the time (hurrrdurrrr the zerkhurrrr meta needs to go check my original ideas hurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr).

I also am endlessly stuck on how absurdly nasty and combative you guys are (I can’t imagine what it would be like in a more lightly moderated forum than this one).

yeah, you tend to get hostile when clueless fools are always trying to argue about concepts that they don’t understand. the amount of times people refer to “zerker builds” when the gear stat combination has absolutely nothing to do with the build is enough to make my eye twitch furiously.

Why dont you just be honest about what you want. Because most of the time it is about anti zerk meta in some form. Otherwise you wouldnt be discussing it.

diversity is the buzz word they hide behind. the reality is simply that they wish tank stats were good.

a bit like how the people who complain about “not being able to play how they want” are simply people who want to be allowed to stroll in to any pug group, regardless of description and do the dungeon, to hell with whether the lfg asked for pink armour only, elementalists only, berserker gear only and so on and so forth.

but of course to say that openly would be scummy, so these people like to hide behind phrases and buzz words to add some sort of moral supremacy to their standpoint.

stats effectiveness is uneven

how is this bad? why should stat effectiveness be even? why should I be able to build assassins in league with pure tank items and be equally as efficient in assassinating people as if I built full offense? you shouldn’t and therefore you can’t. just how you can’t build tanks with full damage otherwise you can’t fulfill your role as a fight initiator who soaks up damage.

They cant design a proper hp amount or damage recieved for enemies because the variation is so large.

except they can, and do. they can do flat amounts of damage and they can do percentage damage.

which also effects enemy scaling like when they had to nerf queens pavillion enemies because the differences in gear made some scaled up bosses nigh unbeatable, then rebalanced to easily zergable.

i’m pretty sure the queen’s pavilion was built to be as anti-zerg as possible last time round, in fact it was outright impossible to get gold reward if you zerged champions down.

you appear to be in the no need for stat customization camp then.
So why do we have stats at all? why not just remove them?

oh don’t worry, I really wish they removed stats, it would have stopped a whole load of the insanity that gets posted on these boards every day if people didn’t get so uptight about stat prefixes.

personally, i like stat diversity when its well executed, it gives me many ways to play the game, and different things to try.

but, there is something to be said for very well balanced difficulties, and lower investment to achieve best case scenarios, like you might see in a fighting game/action game.

but it is well executed because you can use whatever stats you want and still beat content/ making defensive stats give equal (or similar) amount of reward to offensive stats is poor execution, hence why some people have qualms with the meta right now in league – you have super tanks who build straight defense who can duel people who build pure damage and still throw them in the trash can because their base damages are so high that they don’t need to build any sort of damage – or worse, their damage actually scales on their armour/health/magic resistance so you’re fully rewarded for building defensively.

in the context of league, it’s a necessary evil to do this to keep tanks in the meta since they need to actually be a threat when two teams fight otherwise they’ll be completely ignored by the damage carries on both teams, but this thread is of course about dungeons whereas league is pvp. in the context of dungeons, it’s like a warrior stacking toughness and vitality, and having traits that grant power, precision and ferocity equivalent to a certain % of their toughness/vitality, it would be stupid and rewards bad play.

how is making it easier to chain boons or reflects skillful play?

using something like a mesmer’s mantra of concentration right now is skillful because the stability has such low duration that you need to time it fast enough to mitigate the CC but not too soon that you miss it.

and your wall of reflect example is literally just longer duration letting you deal damage longer, and “soaking extra hits” just gives off a massive “I want to be a tank” vibe.

what this game needs is more, new content, not offering rewards for unskilled play. what this game does not need is forced diversity.

can we go back to people complaining about “playing how they want”? I found that a lot less annoying to read than people whining about “diversity” as if it’s some sort of holy grail. in fact, let me give you an example right now – in League of Legends this season it’s probably at its most diverse point so far, in regards to playable champions. you have ****-tier champions who have rose up and become staples of professional play and actually being banned out by teams. you have your regular champions with high mobility, high damage and overloaded skill sets being played. you have tanks being played, bruisers, assassins, absolutely everything right now is playable.

and yet you still have people there incessantly whining about diversity, because the champions they like now still work but aren’t as favoured (the meta there right now favours, surprise surprise, playing super tanks).

if ANet force build diversity, there will be whining. if the status quo is maintained, there will be whining. either way they lose, except with forced diversity people are now being forced in to playing certain builds or gear sets whereas right now you can literally do what you want. sure, you won’t optimal, but whatever, you can still do what you want and clear content just fine.

I think that compared to dungeons, fracal rewards are much worse and this should change.

Well, considering that a fractal 50 usually takes about 20 – 25 minutes max, the rewards are actually not that bad.

well selling dungeons is what kills the game at 80 for many ppl, lvl up, gear up in zerk exo, and do dailys / quit, because there are no explo other than sellers.

how does it kill the game? you literally boot up the lfg, make a group and do a dungeon. selling doesn’t disrupt that in any way, groups fill up quickly all the time.

id take it as high risk high reward, this time u lost, deal with it

let’s change the OP’s post to “I was trying to do a story mode dungeon and was kicked by griefers”. Would you tell them now to deal with it, or is your gripe with selling in particular?

Not a game where a few people have (admittedly, due to ANet’s design failings) reduced group PVE to a speedrun borefest and/or goldmaking enterprise.

Anet itself already said that it’s okay to sell paths. It’s not an abuse of LFGs in any way shape or form. I respect people like OP and wish that I was good enough to solo dungeons.

They said it’s not against the rules but by no means they support doing it.

It’s tolerated and that’s all there is to it.

To the topic I can just say what people said before. Write a ticket to the support if you really care that much about one group of people doing that. But don’t expect to actually get help. As I mentioned before Arenanet is not supporting it. You can be happy that they let this still be a thing at all.

They don’t support selling but they don’t support griefing.

The fact that people are saying “get over it” after someone has just posted about being griefed says a lot about this “community”.

the more and more i think about it, Sinister seems like it’s going to be the go to, simply because most of the chance on critical hit put a condition on the enemy

warrior currently have a trait that gives them 33% chance to apply bleed on crit. they do not use sinister.

It’s not controversial at all, among people who take the time to understand the game and character building system. It’s a huge controversy among players who install the game for the first time, dream of playing a clerics tank, and then get their dreams crushed by the reality of the game and the system. How about everyone agree that people who are ignorant should buck up and understand the game instead of dumbing the game down to their level of ignorance?

There are more perspectives than you’re limiting yourself to accepting. Rather than make up 2 camps of thoughts (the “wrong ignorant” side and then “your side”) to dismiss all argument, why not actually engage in discussion? Perhaps you’ll learn something.

Not sure if you guys saw, but tucked into the frog post was a sentence or two about fractal masteries saying they’ll bring better rewards and make you more powerful.

Over under on the new rewards being access to the fractal weapon box if you level up fractal masteries?

1: How do you come up with these strategies?(noteable ones being AC p1 hodgins split, and the new IV se p3 portal strats)

you think “how can I do this quicker” and you try to come up with solutions. funny thing actually, it reminds me of doing an arah record months and months and months ago (pre-ele stacking meta) and we goofed around with using a load of ice bows on the first phase of lupicus to try and burst him down to phase two for the reflect kill. the damage was really good obviously but for some reason we didn’t latch on to it and just stuck with 2x warrior, 1x ele and “normal” strats for some reason.

2: How long does it take minimum to maximum to actually get a record run?

depends how quickly you can nail down the actual strategies. actual execution probably only takes between a few hours and a day.

3: If a strategy does not work because of players executing them incorrectly, do you stick with it if in theory, they should speed up the run?

you get better players

4: How often do you expect fail runs and resets?

all the time

if you’re trying to do a precise run, sometimes with RNG factors involved, everyone needs to be 100% on point, and sometimes people mess up, it just happens. this is why you’ll have fail/out-take videos of speed runs because you will goof up a run all the time for hours until you get it right unless you get lucky. think of something like the orbs in arah p3, having to do those quickly without anyone slipping up is probably annoying.

This. All gear besides zerk/assasin is just trash in PvE (world bosses grind fest does not count of course). Anything else might be used effectively ONLY on WvW, why do we still get it in pve?

it’s not trash at all, it just isn’t optimal.

i don’t use my rabid or sinister gear and complain because it isn’t optimal, I accept that in most cases it’s second best and … live with it (shock! horror!)

and you know what, some people don’t have the reflexes to play glass. some people flat out just don’t want to and would rather heal team mates or soak up damage because they get some satisfaction out of it.

you’re basically saying PvE is broken because … a meta exists. then you know what, I guess every single game is broken.

Are you implying that, generally speaking, Warriors do more damage than Eles? Or even worse, that Warrior is harder to play than Ele? =P

don’t kid yourself in to thinking camping fire attunement and pressing 2 and 5 off of cooldown is any more challenging than a warrior rotation.

Miku, actually the p3 Frienzed Blast works fine now, it was a bug that it could shoot you outside of red circle.

I always thought that the frenzied blast hitting you outside of the AOE was just splash damage and didn’t think it was bugged at all.

Fun facts: Froggen from league of Legends use standard line casting where as every other pro uses smart cast or that other method where you see the range indicator as long as you are holding down on a key. besides, for some champions you actually want slower casting like rumble to land your ult properly

bosses like lupicus and abom are easy enough that you can honestly just click skills without much issue. i mean if you’re killing them on warrior you’re going to mostly camp one weapon set anyway as well.

then goku moved on to ele solos where he spends half the video interacting with the interface and there’s no way in hell you are skill clicking a might stacking rotation and switching traits at the same time unless you have three hands, two mouses plugged in and are multitasking jesus.

The zerk culture is really so silly. You want to know what is optimal? its not a 5 man zerk squad, there should be at least one slightly tanky person to rez and pull aggro when necessary.

feel free to link any dungeon world record with a “slightly tanky person to rez and pull aggro”.

Its a good thought but I dont think there should be attacks that cant be dodged perhaps attacks that cant be blocked used by intelligent AI.
