Kicker… I know right?? Bolt is my fav legendary weapon as far as looks and effects go.
I think before spending anything on “expensive” gear, you should decide what type of build you want to play. So, where are you playing for end game? PvE? WvW? You’ll typically want different builds for different areas. Again, speaking for myself, I’m leaning toward using my mes only in WvW, and use my warrior for all PvE content. But take your time. No need to rush it when it will take you a long time just to get the “generic” legendary gifts.
This mesmer is mostly for PvE. That goes for dungeons, fractals, world map, etc. Only WvW would come from zerging, so all I’d really need to focus on is utility.
And you all do have a fair point. I’ll just start working on the shared half of legendary items. Where did Anet say about new legendary acquisition? I did not hear of that before.
I’m not sure about new legendaries.
For PvE I suggest a focus on DPS, so more of a berserker build (my opinion). With that in mind, you’ll want to try some different builds based on a power spec, and try them out. See what feels good and works for your purposes. Once you have build sorted out, you can choose the “right” legendaries.
Hi, I’ve been using the maximed hybrid phantasm build, with a little bit of differences based on my current gear, for roaming in WvW. That build uses GS + Sw/P. However, I recently got Delusion as a drop. TBH I really haven’t played my mesmer a lot recently because I’ve been using my warrior in PvE-land to gather/farm for legendary mats (my mes has no maps). I do not PvP.
Anyway, can anyone help to figure out how to add Delusion into my current build or maybe come up with a zerg build or alternative roaming build using the staff? I’m really noob when it comes to this class so could use all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance.
I agree with Thedenofsin in a way. You can gather everything you need that will be required no matter which one you decide to make. Personally, I started out to make Bolt (I really do like that, and use sword in my build), but then decided to make Sunrise instead (also use GS in my build). All I had to change was the precursor and change gossamer out for leather. Though … now I’ve pretty much decided to make both, so I still have a LOT of more gathering and farming to do :-\

This is more humor than QQ, so don’t get offended please- thought it belonged in thread complaining about people complaining:
Warrior: Banner build- “I’ma stand here and continue blocking your skills with my regen boon+regen signet + 30-35khp…and not hurt you.”
Thief:Backstab build- “DIE ALREADY!”
Mesmer:Shatter build- walks up and watches Thief continually stab War in back and War laugh while spamming Shield5. Throws out GS5 “Yea, I went there”
Warrior: Slams Hammer in Mesmer face, watches Mesmer make 2 sets of butterflies. “Um…where you go?”
Thief:STAB STAB STAB , still following warrior around while war auto attacks with hammer to find mesmer, “OMG Y U NO DIE?!?!?”
Warrior: Turns around, slams thief with Hammer f1, then autos it dead while thief is stunned. “Come’ere Mesmer…”
Thief: “What just happened? My hp just vanished….”
Necromancer:Minion Build- stares blankly at Thief “Why can’t I rez this thief to fight for me? QQ, logic invalid QQ”
Mesmer: is right behind Warrior “This guy is dumb….” continues walking behind Warrior, careful to be directly behind and out of camera range. Seems odd that War is still autoing with hammer.
Necromancer: Pops Deathshroud, shoots random balls of darkness at War, watches Minions chase him down, uses fear, leaves Deathshroud. Begins snacking on popcorn while watching War get wrecked by Minions with no input from Necro.
Mesmer: Famous shatter combo- GS3,2 swap, sword3,decoy,sword3+2, Mind Wrack- is used on Necromancer who dies immediately. Minions vanish.
Warrior: “What…who?HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!?!!?” Is lying on ground unable to get back up and fight, but somehow strong enough to throw 25 lb rocks at the Mesmer.
Mesmer: walks up and waves hand in air, “Sometimes being patient and lazy is good.” places shining hand on ground next to warrior, random banner slams through his face.
Warrior: Groans despite banner in face.
Thief: Groans while surrounded by Wars banners.
Necromancer: Groans about not being able to self rez due to being able to summon the dead.
Awesome post! TY for the laugh
Don’t take what I’m about to say (type) the wrong way, but you’re doing it wrong.
There is no achievement, no goal within this game that they can’t take away from you. You’re level 80? They might move the bar up to level 95. Or release Elona and make you earn seperate EXP for Elona levels. All your gear? Wiped out when the Elder Dragons consume enough magic to drain existing enchantments and spells, so start all over again. And so on.
This is an MMO, and that means that the world can be changed. For good or for bad, the Devs can change it at any time. NOTHING you earn here is set in stone. No goal is unmoving, no prize guaranteed to remain within your grasp. Someday, NCSoft will shut down the servers, and every last thing you have in game, even the characters themselves, will be gone.
So, you play for the moment. Don’t spend your time trying to earn the moment when you have fun, have fun at that moment. Play what you enjoy, not something you find a chore so that you can get to a goal that may be pulled out from under you later. If you have fun chasing that goal, then fine, play for the thrill of that chase, not the goal.
And no, this is not an easy thing to keep in mind all the time. I’ve spent a lot of money on gems, and I don’t like to think that someday all the armor and toys I’ve gotten are going to disappear. They will, though.
Play for fun, don’t work for goals. Some day, when GW2 is shut down, what will you have? Fond memories, or a bunch of digital ashes where once were prizes and titles you worked so hard for?
+1 to you, sir or madam. Well said. It took me a long time to decide to even try for a legendary because I’m well aware that what is great (and here) today may be gone tomorrow in a game like this. But hey, I’m enjoying the ride, the moments, of getting there. Meeting great people and having loads of fun. I’ve spent an armload on gems because I enjoy this game and it’s my entertainment. Sadly, my ONLY entertainment, but that’s a whole other story LOL.
I understand how the OP feels, but I’m glad you stopped doing something you’re not enjoying. It’s a game. PLAY, don’t work.
Nice to see for this game getting some recognition. Personally, although I can see there are some flaws, I love this game, for many reasons. My husband keeps wanting to steer me to Skyrim, and I have played it and enjoyed it, but I cannot break away from this game. It’s the only one I play, and I’ve definitely contributed to its success through my excessive gem purchases :p
I assume from such low karma numbers in 4 months that you don’t WvW, and as another poster mentioned, you need world completion for your legendary, which includes many areas in WvW. Time to jump in and start taking some towers! You’ll be amazed at how fast your karma bank increases. I could get 300k in a week of WvW.
Also you can try guesting to a server that does a world boss train nightly, pop a karma booster plus buffs from banners and again, you’ll get tons of karma in about 2.5 hours.
Personally, I have done only 1 fractal, but as mentioned this is also a great way to get karma.
It’s really not hard unless ALL you’re doing is running around in PvE land doing hearts and gathering.
At reset is prob your best time to WvW.
I should add my current mes build is GS and sw/pistol. I used her mostly for roaming with an all mes group. But i could use her for zergs more. Skills and traits would probably have to be changed up though. Now i’m leaning more toward just using my mes for WvW and continue to use my warr for PvE farming, dungeons and world bosses.
Hmmmm. Good points from both of you. What about Bolt? Is that better for either the warr or mes? I was going to make that originally but changed to Sunrise from people sayng warr SHOULD have a GS. Materials are the exact same except changing gossamer for leather… and i still have all the gossamer… in case i changed my mind…. again!
Oh, and to use the new weapon skills you unlock, you must press the corresponding number for that skill. I.e. You can’t just press 1 and get all the skills. If you unlock skill 2, 3, 4, 5, you have to press those numbers on your keyboard. Not sure if you figured this out or not.
Every type of weapon you use has to be “learned”, or unlocked. You do this by using it. You’ll notice the “skill” fills in as you kill things with that particular weapon. For instance, if you’ve only used pistols and unlocked all the things (a.k.a. skills) you can do with those, then equip a sword, you’re back to only being able to do skill 1, until you kill things with it many times and unlock all the skills for that particular weapon.
The skills on the other side of the red orb (your health pool indicator is red, the yellow bars on top of that indicate your ability to dodge, or sort of your instant energy), are slot skills that you unlock as you gain skill points. You need to go into your hero menu, go to the second tab down on the left, and find the skills on which you can “spend” your skill points.
I know it can be a lot to learn, but once you have it all down, you’ll be having a ton of fun in this game. Read the forum post from the link posted above (for new players). You’ll learn a ton. Also, keep asking questions. My advice is to learn how to use the trading post (TP) early on, or you’ll kick yourself later for “throwing away” profits. Good luck!!
I heard anyone with a “2” and “9” in their account number is cursed with extremely low drop rates of precursors.
This is completely true. Here is why -
0 – Zero is nothing, and quantum fluctuation dictates that basically anything can come out of nothing, including a precursor.
1 – Numero uno, #1, top of the hill, of course they are going to get a precursor!
2 Well, 2 is just a wanna be number one, and it’s even, too. So boring. No precursor for you!
3 – The law of threes – it’s that you get a precursor!
4 – Number 4 in Chinese sounds like death. Don’t mess with that mo-fo! Better give him a presurcor!
5 – It’s in the middle, moderate, nice and temperate. That even-keeled-ness nowadays deserves a precursor.
6 – What do you get if you change one letter in “six”? That’s right, sox, or socks for our less-than-cool cousins, and what do you stuff your socks with this time of year? Precursors!!
7 – Lucky number 7. ‘Nuff said.
8 – It’s the only cube here, 2^3. Surely, for going above and beyond the square, this one deserves a precursor.
9 – For calling my Shirley and being at the end of the line, you get nothing. You lose! Good day, sir!
Thanks for a good laugh
Hi, so is the build in the OP still the best one for roaming? Since 4 pages of the thread I just want to be sure. Thanks!
Well thanks for the response Rhego. I realize it’s difficult for someone to say “play this or play that”. I was hoping for some reasons anyone might choose one class over the other (based on experience). I appreciate your comments on the utility of the mesmer, as I hadn’t really thought of that kind of thing.
I’m thinking now maybe I should try to use the warr and mes depending on what I feel like doing or the situation in WvW when I’m playing. I really like the necro in medium size groups, but maybe I should just plan on legendaries for warr and mes. After all, the legendaries don’t lend themselves well to the necro anyway (too fluffy, and the necro is all serious). GS for warr and sword for mes? What’s the recommended weapon set for mes for roaming these days?
For sure youtube will help. I used it many many times for vistas and sometimes for hard to find points of interest.
OK, so I always roll my eyes at the posts saying “help me pick a class”. And yet, here I am.
The story:
I have 3 characters, all 80s. Warr, Mes, Necro. I have world completion on the Warr only, about 80% on Necro and like 5% on Mes (leveled through crafting). All three are fun in their own way. I’m currently working on crafting my first legendary weapon, Sunrise. Here’s the dilemma…. I’m pretty bored with PvE, especially since I’ve been farming madly for the mats for the legendary. I’d like to get into PvP slowly, but I think after I craft 2 legendaries (I won’t do world completion again) I would like to focus on WvW.
The question is, out of the 3 classes that I have which one should I focus on? I don’t mind zerging, but I much prefer small squads for havock when I can find a good group. I like mobility, I like kiting, but like melee too. I think warr is only powerful as zerk and they’re maybe bad with conditions (i.e. range). Mesmers seem good at small group fights but not so good in zergs. Necro seems good in zergs for sustainability but lacks mobility in small skirmishes. I’m just not sure which one to focus on… i.e. who is getting the legendary weapons. Once I finish Sunrise I don’t even know if I will equip it until I can make this decision.
TLDR; given the class choices I have, what would you pick to play going forward?
Go buy a PS4?
/15chars
WvW. Can’t stress enough that you can get gross amounts of karma here, especially with boosters. I almost gave up hope of getting a legendary because I needed like 500k karma. Got that in less than a month in WvW, and only casually played it weekends.
Also, world bosses and fractals.
Well I think it also depends on what they enjoy doing for gaming. Both my son and daughter bought this game the day it was released. I picked it up a couple weeks later because it looked fun. More than a year later and I play daily while neither of them had ever even gotten a character to 80. But, they have friends, parties, PS3, and XBoxes to play. For me, this is it. I think also they both played mostly solo, or they joined guilds with their friends and when their friends moved on it got boring. I have to say that I really liked the game a lot more once I found a good guild.
This game can really become tedious, repetitive and boring, despite having great graphics and lots of other good things going for it. I believe that’s partly because there’s a HUGE learning curve if you’ve never played an MMO before – I realize the OP said their friends had, but I still think this is an issue. There is no help in game to learn to use the game and its mechanics to their full potential, and I think this is a problem.
TLDR: can be boring after a while if you don’t MAKE it exciting and fun.
Personally I put melted cheese on my forehead and pray to Odin before I salvage items, they say that helps your chances at getting ectos.
Best post I’ve seen in the forums this week. Thank you
Ya, judging by the rate I’m getting from Mystic kits in the last couple weeks, I think I’d rather sell all rares. Maybe I’ve just had a bad streak now like others but it’s pretty bad. I used to do world boss train and come away with 25 ectos. Now it’s more like 15. At least for every rare I sell I can buy 1 ecto, guaranteed
And since the rate with mystic kit is less than 1:1, that makes more sense.
People have been trying to get mounts here forever. That doesn’t look to be in the cards. If they do add a way to get from one place to another as quick as the WPs, count me in. Until then, leave them exactly as they are, thankyouverymuch.
Maybe you can re-read my post as to why I suggested it’s part of “the world”. I made my reasoning quite plain.
Try not to forget that the WPs are a gold sink in game. I doubt ANet is going to want to take those away.
I would also like to see data on zerg trains causing loss of customers.
Great! Just keep in mind that when you use the gates in LA, you come out in the capital city of the race you go to. You need to get out of that city to get to the regular area. However, you can still take your time in each city and find all the waypoints and vistas without mobs trying to kill you. You can gain some good XP this way. You also get a reward for completing each map as well as extra XP.
I disagree Tamerlayne. PvP is not part of the world because it’s a tournament-based instance. This is likely also why dungeons aren’t part of the “world”. They’re strictly instances that are not really “there” until players participate. On the other hand, WvW maps are always there. They could be full or empty or anywhere in between, but they are indeed part of the world and everyone in “PvE land” actually gets buffs and such from people who participate in it.
Look, I agree it can be frustrating to get the WvW points, which is why one shouldn not wait until the very last to get them. It takes anyone lots of time to complete the world. Start right away to get points in WvW so when you’re down to your last few %, those are NOT in the WvW maps!
remove half of them. especially ones near events/champs
I reject your idea wholeheartedly. None of you HAVE to USE the waypoints. If you don’t want to, then don’t.
The open world is way too big. You know how many world bosses would get done if there were no WPs? None. I’m not wasting an hour running from one side of the Tyria to the other just to do an event. Ever. It would be over before I got anywhere anyway. Oh, or maybe I could just make 30 characters, one for each huge map, and park it there. That sounds like fun…. NOT.
That’s nice. Long live the zerg trains , eh? lol
Has nothing to do with zerg trains. I have only so much time to play in a day, and harvest mats and and kills stuff and do dungeons and play wvw and do world bosses AND champs… I don’t want to spend my hour running from here to there, thank you. I’m not 19, I don’t play for 12 hours a day. With waypoints I can get to where I want to play for the time I have to play. Simple as that.
Oh…one of the “I got a life” elites. Don’t have the time to invest in an MMO? I don’t care. The lowest common denominator of gaming.
Give it to me now, cause I “got a life”.
I’m hooked, how is having a life and still wanting to spend your time in game doing something fun a bad thing?
/popcorn
Yes, do tell. I’m a bad person for wanting to uh… actually PLAY my game that I paid for rather than run around not actually playing?

But it’s really not hard. You just have to be patient, same as WvW players who must run around PvE land and do all those hearts, etc. You just keep checking in and get what you can when you can. I’m not on a faceroll server. I had to wait. But when I did get in there, sometimes I joined the zerg, roamed with a group, or just ran around doing my own thing. Sometimes you get ganked. So what? WP back and try another area. The colors DO change. You will get your opportunity. It is ALL about patience.
For those wanting world completion for a legendary, you need to get badges of honor as well, so you might as well just get in there with the zerg!! Bring monies for armor repair, bring food for condi cleansing, and having some fun!

You need to take the road to Divinity’s Reach. Go through the Asura gate into the city. In the middle of the city, past there is another Asura gate that take syou to Lion’s Arch. From there you can go anywhere, as there are gates to all other race cities.
All races have starter areas of level 1-15, so you can choose any one.
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I beg to differ. It takes forever to comlete the PvE part of world completion. It’s boring, and there are people who don’t like it as much as those who hate WvW. I would dare say it would be faster, by FAR to get WvW points over PvE points.
But you need WORLD completion for a legendary. So, how do you propose that WvW players only get a legendary? Or they don’t deserve one as much as PvE players?
Here’s an idea, what if they rewarded level specific loot bags for DEs? Say 5 loot bags for gold, 3 for silver and 1 for bronze. So a DE in Gendarran would yield something like small moldy bags while a DE in Cursed Shore would yield heavy moldy bags. This would maintain some of the randomness that ANet so loves, but would bring some love back to the DEs. The could also implement DE specific DR to help prevent abuse and keep people moving from event to event rather than camping the same few events. Let’s say you can only get full rewards for a DE once every 2 hours or something like that.
I like your idea. I think the reason champs are so popular is that you are guaranteed loot, unlike so much of the rest of the game. As I stated above, I can go to Orr and kill 20 mobs and get ZIP. Why? Does ANet have any idea how frustrating that is???
As far as spamming 1 in champ trains, this is going to be dependent on the size of the train. When my home server was doing the FGS train, it was always small. If you wanted to down the champ in a reasonable amount of time you threw everything you had at it. That has completely died now on my server so I guest to TC or JQ, etc. Those are zerg trains, usually 20-30 people. If you’re hitting the champ for 20k per hit, you kill it before everyone has a chance to get there. So, you spam 1. That’s a courtesy to the other players who don’t have the fastest load screens.
I do the world boss train on weekends and it’s really quite boring for the most part. Jormag is the hardest boss and gives the crappiest loot…. go figure. Also agree that as long as “good” things cost hundreds of expensive mats and gold, the farming will not stop. I don’t want to take 4 years to make my legendary weapon, thank you.
So by most posters’ interjections, it seems you’d all be ok with those who only want to WvW to only have to get those areas for 100% world completion. Correct? I mean, they don’t like to do that, so they shouldn’t have to, right?
Figuring out the trading post should be your number one priority. If you’re selling stuff to NPC vendors you’re losing A LOT of money. For instance, selling copper ore to a vendor will net you about 3c. If you sell it on the TP, even for the lowest offer, you’ll get more like 37c. Seriously, that a big loss on each item. Over time it will add up big time. I’m sure I lost tons of gold for the first few months of the game because I had no idea what the TP was or how it worked. I’m not sure if there’s a youtube walkthrough video on it. If not, there SHOULD BE!!!
Other than LW, champ trains and world boses, there’s not a lot in PvE to make people want to do anything else. Soon it’ll have to be called Dungeon Wars 2 since that’s mostly waht people will be doing when they finish leveling. The PvE content is becoming nothing more than a necessary evil to many.
Bingo. I have world completion on exactly one character. I have one other toon that got to 80 by a long, extremely boring weekend of crafting. She has only been to the places to do champ trains. I can’t even bear the thought of having to re-do the hearts to give her map completion. I just can’t do it.
The PvE world is too big. It’s too boring. Maybe it’s fun if you’re 12 or playing the game through for the first time. After that… no… just… no.
I think they need to do something with it but simply raising the amount of gold/karma/valuable items you get for doing a DE would be a mistake.
It used to be that champions gave much the same rewards as other DE’s, people complained that this was unfair given the amount of time and effort involved so Anet increased it. If they now increase the reward for everything else we’ll just be back to where we were before but with bigger numbers. (And in danger of causing problems with inflation because everyone would suddenly have more money.)
I think it’s virtually impossible to make sure that players are always evenly spread throughout the world doing all events equally. Some players, apparently a large portion of MMO players, are entirely interested in making as much money (or other currencies) as possible and will always focus on whatever helps them achieve that goal. Unless all events are identical in every way, which obviously isn’t an option, something will always be quicker or easier or more profitable and that’s what they’ll all gravitate towards.
Changing that would be a huge undertaking. You’d either have to re-work the entire game so currencies and reward items aren’t desirable whilst somehow still giving people goal to work towards or you’d have to change the attitude of MMO players which has been instilled by over a decade of games where you spend most of your time chasing the next carrot.
To some extent Anet tried that last one by making exotic gear relatively easy to obtain and any ‘progression’ after that purely cosmetic and within weeks people were complaining that they had nothing to do and no reason to keep playing.
Getting more reward would not be an issue if the grind wasn’t horrible for anything decent in this game. Want a legendary? Well, even WITH farming it will take months. Needing hundreds of everything to get anything causes the NEED for higher rewards.
For instance: I am working on making Sunrise. For this, along with hundreds of other materials and pure gold (for recipes, icy runestones, etc), I also need 100 charged lodestones. Have you tried to get these? If you are rich and just want to buy of the TP, they are ~2.5g each (so, 250g JUST for this one item). So, I try to farm these at Lyssa temple on differing servers when they’re open. In 1 hour of farming I’ll be lucky to come away with one. Other rewards gotten while farming, in the level 79 zone, are a load of garbage that is veritably worthless to use or sell.
I’m patient. I don’t expect to get a legendary overnight. However, it should not take 2 years to get, either. It should be within reach of the average player with dedication to obtaining the needed materials. If ANet nerfs rewards I think I will simply give up and go back to my real life, because this is already becoming too much WORK for a GAME.
Add people who want ascended and crafting to 500, etc, and really, the rewards need to go UP, not down. Every time I forgot how garbage the loot is in Orr and try it for a while I get nothing but angry at this game, and back to the champ train I go. Seriously, and I’m not being all “woe is me”, but I will leave this game if it gets any worse for loot. Maybe you are all rich from TP flipping, but to me, that is just as much of a JOB that I don’t want to do. I really want to start having fun with this game. Why does it have to take so long to do so? Up rewards for DE and I might do them. As it is now, I never will. I laugh at making 2s for 15 mins when I need 500g to make one item. C’mon!!
Isle of Janthir usually at reset every day as part of world boss train.
So I changed my mind on the legendary I want. Instead of Bolt I’m making Sunrise. Not a big deal though since the requirements are exactly the same except that I needed leather instead of gossamer.
Woooo hoooo! 100% map completion attained! That was the hardest part after the precursor. Bolt…. I’m coming for you.
You do understand the concept of SALES taxes, right? It doesn’t matter WHAT is being sold (a haircut, a lap dance or a sports car) the fact that a PURCHASE is made requires that a percentage of that monetary exchange takes place is paid to the state (or whomever is collecting the tax).
You don’t have to be able to touch something to pay taxes on it.
Sorry, but what you’re saying is not necessarily true. Sometimes taxes are implemented on TANGIBLE goods, sometimes on services, sometimes on both. In my province, we have both a Provincial Sales Tax (PST) which imposes a consumer tax on tangible goods, and a Goods and Services Tax (GST) which is a consumer tax imposed on goods and services. So, to give you an example, we pay GST only on legal services, but pay both taxes on a DVD purchase. In my province, gift cards are not taxed, likely because you pay the tax when you use the card to purchase a good. I can touch the card, but it’s not taxable.
You may want to refrain from making sweeping statements about something you may not fully understand.
It’s account bound, so you can craft it on anyone and then move it through your bank to whoever intends to use it.
Thank you for the answer
Also make sure to talk to scouts around the map (NPCs with spyglasses above them). They will point you in the direction of renown hearts and “open up” the map for you. You can tell the level of the renown heart by the number after it; i.e. Help Brenda Fight Off Bandits (2) – that would be a level 2 area (I made up the quest name, BTW).
Hi all! I’m not much of a crafter, and I have a question about crafting gift of metal to make Bolt. I have leveled one character up to 80 using crafting, and I am not making Bolt for that character. My main is the character that is going to get Bolt, and has zero crafting levels. Question is, can my crafting toon make the Gift of Metal for use with my main toon, or is it soulbound or anything once I make it?
