The inequity is the biggest issue because of two parts:
1) New players simply get far more content for the same price.
So the up to 3 years of content you veterans have experienced, much of it unique and non-repeatable, and the thousands of hours players have got out of their base game purchase, count for nothing?
This is the fundamental disagreement I have with this “new players get more” argument. New players are not getting more. New players are not getting 3 years and thousands of hours of enjoyment and unique, non-repeatable content from launch up til now.
The only other game in existence I have played that even comes close to the time I’ve invested in it for a similar price tag to GW2 is Skyrim. I’d buy skyrim all over again if I needed to to get a new DLC for it, because the sheer amount of enjoyment and hours I have got from Skyrim make the price a pittance compared to what I as a customer have got from it.
That’s Skyrim as a single player game without continual development costs, with a huge community modder team to fix all their bugs, without server hosting fees to pay for, without any of the persistent costs asociated with running an MMO.
Am I happy to let new players come in to the game and experience HoT for the same price of me upgrading when I’ve had 10 months (myself, others almost 3 years) and over 1,000 hours of gameplay before HoT has released?
kitten right I am, I can’t wait to get several thousand more hours of gameplay from HoT for only one (mandatory) payment of as little as $50 (5 cents an hour at 1,000 hours of gameplay, to put it in perspective).
I’ll also buy gems regularly, on top of that.

Oh god, that was hilarious.

The sheer number of strawmen in this thread could keep 1,000 acres free of crows for a lifetime.
Not to mention the false equivalence.

Here is what a expansion is:
When GW2 starts charging a subscription fee as a mandatory requirement for playing the game that comparison will be relevant. Until then it’s meaningless.

I am also seeing dollars, not £, wasn’t last night. was £35, £60 and £80
I’m so amused right now. codes work.
Why on earth would a dev put these on the API?
https://youtu.be/aUtMGS3ezLI Here’s Wooden Potato’s take.
I wouldn’t expect Bog Otter/Aurora Peachy/MMoinks/Mattvisual to cover it; they’re getting kickbacks if you order through their links, after all.
So is WP. WP has been supported by ANet for years.
WP is looking at it from a pricing perspective, rather than all this absurd rage over newbies getting the core game for free. His take is that they’re asking a l;ittle much in terms of price when we have so few details of what’s actually going to be in the expansion at this point in time, which I can agree with (Still bought anyway, but that’s me)
So… buy the base game on it’s own for $50 (outside sale prices) or buy the base game and HoT expansion preorder offer for $50…
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm……
I wonder why they might have possibly got rid of the base game for the time being
Not much of a loyal fan if you’re leaving because of a preorder offer for new players. Bye o/
The prepurchase bundle includes free access to the base game to new players.
No where does it state that this will be the case after prepurchases, and I believe the FAQ even specifies that this is a preorder-exclusive offer for new players.
Oh god, the e-lawyers are on the march, guys!

Case in point, look at how NCSoft handled City of Heroes. Tremendous community support, highly interactive devs… shut down because it wasn’t lucrative enough.
That’s a ludicrous comparison. CoH is 11 years old. If anything, it tells us we should be concerned that NCSOFT may shut GW1 down sometime in the next 2 years (and I wouldn’t be surprised).
See, that’s not even accurate; the cycle of the game was a little over 8 years from launch to its eventual shut down. Now that I think about it, though, the only real issue with that analogy is that NCSoft is a publisher, not a developer, and I can’t say for sure how much influence NCSoft does or doesn’t have on the development and marketing of a title.
If you think they don’t factor in at all though, well… I have some beachfront property in Kansas you may be interested in.
NCSoft isn’t just the publisher of GW2, ANet is a subsidiary of them, as it was with Paragon Studios (CoH developers)
To the people trying to compare with WoW, you realise that they get their income bolstered by a mandatory $15/month subscription, right?
a 100k loss on predicted profits in the tens of millions.
I’m sure they’ll be fine.
People will kitten and complain about the expansion even if it was handed out for free. It’s impossible to keep everyone happy, and going by the amount of people I’ve seen in game with the trailblazer title and the positive nature of most map/guild chats I’ve seen regarding HoT (aside from the odd bitter griper here and there) they’re doing pretty well.
As usual, it’s the vocal minority stirring the pot while the content stay silent and happy.
I’m with you OP. Only been playing GW2 for 10 months or so, and I’m amazingly happy here. I’m more than happy to continue supporting the development of this fantastic game to HoT and beyond!

I can’t think of a single successful business that offers a service that doesn’t give exclusive deals and advantages to new customers rather than existing customers. I fail to see the validity of this outrage when this is something that happens literally everywhere in business. You guys are acting like ANet have committed some great sin, and it’s hilarious.
(edited by rapthorne.7345)
I’m utterly baffled by the sheer number of people who think new customer incentives are an alien concept.
I can’t think of a single company that offers a service that does not offer deals exclusive to new customers to incentivise purchase.
Where’s the demonisation of them? You’re acting like ANet have done something unprecedented and morally wrong when in fact they’re doing what almost every service providing company has been doing since they existed.

There will be continued content development of HoT over time, it’s not a case of what comes at launch is what you get and that’s that.
In game, many are actually very happy with it. I’m seeing a lot of trailblazer titles around and few complaints.
As usual, the vocal minority of disgruntled self entitled players are the ones that plague the forums, and the happy majority stay quiet and content

It’s great if you are a new player. But a new players $50 gets more value than a current players $50 – and that doesn’t include the issue relating to needing to buy the base game to play HoT
I guess that’s where people’s opinions fundamentally differ.
I for one place a very high value on the three years the game has been up (or even just the 9 months I got to experience thus far), so in my opinion veterans have had a far better experience and value for their money than new players coming in to the game that will never experience older content
If I won't buy HoT. What can I play in HoT?
in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

The simple fact is, we do not know. The devs have not gone in to detail about this just yet.
I’m assuming the next GW2 live stream will be an in-depth look at guild halls, so we can check them out then.

I’m assuming there will be no physical copies, otherwise those would have been preorderable, too.
I’m honestly glad about this, to be quite honest. Yes, it means no physical goodies, but it also means faster deployment of HoT, given the time, money and effort international distribution of physical copies would take

We don’t owe ArenaNet, but they don’t owe us either they are free to decide on the price of their goods (or in this case them and NCSoft most likely) just as much as we are free to either buy them or not.
I get that they are free to settle the prices as they see fit in order to keep up with the competition, but they are offering players who’ve invested thousands of hours into this game in the past 3 years absolutely nothing with those packages. No amount of extra goodies and early accesses can justify the prices they’re demanding for something with no set date.
So those thousands of hours of gameplay you’ve got from GW2 for no subscription fee and no obligation to buy gems, on top of pretty regular content updates are worth absolutely nothing?
I’m sure many people will not be buying HoT, and one of my guild’s main concerns is that only HoT purchasers will have access to the guild halls, this will have a massive segregation effect on guilds if this is the case. Can we get some clarity on this?

Did people go insane and claw the walls when they merged the original GW trilogy in to one pack for a lower cost?
Did they go mad and scream scam when WoW merged it’s first three expansions in to the base game cost?
I really fail to see what the big deal is.
(edited by rapthorne.7345)
I’m really happy to be able to purchase HoT at last, but the ultimate tier is very underwhelming.
While I appreciate the discount on gems is unprecedented, a discount on 4,000 gems is hardly an “ultimate” option. I’d much prefer different exclusive digital goods over some gems.
Please consider changing the ultimate tier, I’m confident many people feel the same way. Most games with multiple prepurchase tiers offer their best and most exclusive goods at their top tier of prepurchase, extra gems just isn’t worthwhile.
Unless the ultimate tier changes, I’ll just be sticking to deluxe.
I’ve never used that skill in the time I’ve been playing the game on any of my characters
“devs proving once again they hate guardians”
Tried maining a necromancer? Then you will know true developer hatered
Given the account wide unlock nature of most of the gem store items, I honestly feel like their prices are bloody generous. most games would have you paying the amount Anet do (or more) for a temporary costume or costume that can only be used on a single character, ANet give you account wide unlocks available any time after you’ve bought them on any one of the characters on your account
As much as I’d like this, there may be technical issues with it. Wouldn’t be the first time weird engine limitations have got in the way of things (for example, the 500 member cap on guilds is supposedly a hard limit that can’t be exceeded)
Pedantry aside, ANet’s policy is that 1 button press for one button press is all you’re allowed. any macro sequences are techanically bannable unless being used for musical instrument playing.
So yes, if you want to be literal and pedantic (No one likes a pedant, by the way) about it, ANet allow keybind altering, not macroing
I’ll assume you mean neuter.
I for one am definitely concerned about these changes. This is going to be a massive indirect buff to classes like warrior and elementalist in PvP
All the RPers I’ve met have been very friendly, many tend to hang out in the cities and the buildings in the maps you can freely enter (such as the hunting lodge in Queensdale). RP tends to always be quite closed off compared to normal play regardless of the game you pick, with exception to those games that have official dedicated RP servers
I’m hopeful for a release date/preorder announcement. If they show up to the world’s largest, most renowned game showcase in the world (mostly associated with game release announcements!) with just guild halls to show off, then they will do nothing but make themselves look very amateurish and disappoint a large number of people
(edited by rapthorne.7345)
I absolutely love Timberline’s aesthetic, music and overall feel. Such a pretty map
I’m greatly disheartened to see the amount of disrespect I’m seeing in this thread from specific individuals.
The OP is simply asking for a feature within guild halls that could be implemented as a way to remember deceased players. If someone’s very close to you dies and you shared a specific hobby, whether it be Guild Wars, Fishing, or whatever else, most people would look for a way to commemorate or remember them involving that shared experience. This doesn’t mean the OP and their family isn’t going to mourn in real life, it simply means they would appreciate a way to remember their friend in relation to the world they shared together for a decade. I don’t think that’s unreasonable in the least and fully support the OP.
I hope ANet are looking at this thread and taking note of some of the brilliant suggestions that have been put forth by people
It was mentioned in the Reaper livestream that Blood Magic is being reworked, has there been any extra word on this? If not, I guess I’ll be looking out for the skills rebalance stream, assuming it’s covered in there
They very specifically worded it as “next content update”, not “next patch”.
Do not expect these changes on Tuesday, as you may well end up disappointed.
I’m very sorry for your loss.
ArenaNet have precedent of memorialising a fallen player, and I’m sure if it’s possible they’ll go out of their way to provide you with some method to remember your friend in-game.
Other games have erectable statues of certain guild members in bases for reasons of recognition/memorial, so perhaps that’s an avenue the developers could look in to.
I wish your guild family my deepest condolences.
I really want those Black Feather Wings again. A day? Really?
It was made rather clear that they were there for a day AS A SNEAK PEEK with the real release of them coming later.
a sneak peak is something you can look at to expect later on, not something ppl can already use.
it’s more a one day sale with no date of when it comes back, and that for an already overpriced item. (seriously, 800GEMs for a back piece)
The black wings were 500 gems, not 800
What?
All gear is being upscaled in stats to compensate for the stats taken from the trait system.
The only area where this causes any issues is with builds that relied on the trait stats while not using equipment that complimented those stats
Easy solution: Bosses do not spawn until every mob leading up to the boss has been killed.
I agree with the OP, it’s always bothered me that thief has an on-dodge visual effect but no other classes do
I’d love them to be account wide but bumped up to say 800 gems each. The main reason I don’t have additional bag slots is my alt addiction, it would just be too expensive
Now the minority who actually want mounts are trying to turn the thread.
From what I have seen in the past, across reddit, the forums and most importantly in-game, the split between those for and against mounts is actuall weighted for mounts, especially where newer players are concerned. People just don’t tend to populate the forums a great deal, so we can never gauge what the “true” majority want, as most of the regular forum users have a very specific opinion that they just happen to be rather loud about expressing.
Vocal minorities very rarely represent the majority.
I myself don’t care either way in the end, to me in most games mounts are more for vanity than practicality anyway.
Alduin, given all Zhaitan is good at is flying around and holding on to buildings.
Mordremoth vs Alduin, however… that could be an interesting encounter.
I fell for the clickbait title, sigh.
One day they’ll give us vanity mounts beyond the carpet, drill and broomstick
I really think ANet need to put the “this mail is from another player” message at the top of mails in giant red all caps or something, because how often this gets brought up utterly baffles me, is it really that missable?
