Its a game, most people play it to unwind when they feel tired or stressed, not take on hardcore bosses with uber skill for several hours after a long day at work.

IMO, this kind of content does not belong in open world and never did.

Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hannelore.8153

IMO, the new dailies suck for several reasons:

1) Newbies cannot do them. There is generally only one daily that can be done by a newbie without resorting to PvP/WvW, and characters below level 18 and 22 will not be able to see the PvP/WvW icons or know to go to Lion’s Arch.

2) What was previously a system that encouraged to enjoy parts of the game you normally wouldn’t, is now a grind, because you have to do certain things in certain places. To put this more simply, watching ten vistas anywhere would’ve been more fun than watching one vista in a specific map. At the moment, it feels like nothing more than a sink for a bit of silver from waypointing around.

3) They have added yet more psuedo-loot – rewards that were already part of the game but were changed from automatic to now requiring you to click things. Just what we needed, more junk on our already overflowing characters and banks. In theory, this lets us use the experience and other rewards on any character, but in reality the boost that it gives is way too low to matter.

I personally used dailies as a form of map completion incentive. I would go where I wanted to go and do what I wanted to do, while completing them.

Overall, I see the new daily system as just like every other system Anet has implemted: Very good idea on paper and very poor implementation. Just like everything else, such as megaserver and world boss timers, they seem to’ve stopped development on the feature about halfway through and released an unfinished product that did not have the thought and polish of a proper QA team or any actual players.

Please stop making “paper” changes. It is hurting the game’s presentation because we keep ending up with these complex interlocking systems that don’t quite want to snap into place and become an actual thing.

Raids NOT Color blind Friendly...

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Hand, wrist, and arm disabilities

  • Reduce clicking. Add options like:
    “Open all bags”,
    “Salvage all greens”
    “Sell all minor sigils”
  • Improve autoattack.
  • Separate support and offensive skills. Right now you can’t enable the “always cast AoE skills on enemy” option to radicially accelerate casting, because if you try to use a support skill e.g on the Druid, IT GOES TO THE ENEMY. WHAT.

One-handed gameplay (loss of a limb)

  • Improve mouse support. Allow cycle-casting skills with mouse wheel.
  • Improve auto-targetting.
  • Add in-game voice chat like Blizzard games.

Colorblindness

  • This is easy, add a high contrast mode like most games have. Typically blue and orange are the colors used, but making it configurable would help.
    Neutral: White
    Good: Blue
    Bad: Orange

Spatial focus, problems seeing 3D, etc.

  • Improve the minimap to tell you where you are, rather than just trying to display it pictographically. Physically show the location name, distance to the next objective, whether its higher or lower, all on the minimap HUD as a textural read-out that is easy to follow, not just as ambiguous icons.
  • Make the world map not take up the entire freaking screen. Put it in a window. This would also greatly improve WvW gameplay (no more dying to a Thief or running off a cliff because you were trying to check fort status).
  • Show dots for all players, not just those in a party or guild (like WvW).

Visual impairment (partial blindness)

  • Improve halo support. Add thick borders around all objects.
  • Add a way to clearly mark which skills are more blindless friendly, for example skills that are auras, autocast or otherwise passive, like signets and banners.
(This could help with one-handed gameplay as well.)

Audio impairment (deafness)

  • Add an option for increased visual queues, like screen shaking.
  • Better subtitle support. Many NPC dialog liines do not appear in chat (bug?).

Epilepsy and similar

  • Tag each graphical effect with a priority, this would range from 1-10. Then add a slider that eliminates everything below a certain level.
  • Smooth out transitions using interpolation curves.
  • Try to use a more consistent color palette, like brown-yellow-white. Don’t flash pink or purple all the time just because a Mesmer is attacking.
  • Add skill icons above players and enemies’ heads to replace graphical effects.

General improvements

  • Add freaking life bars and buff bars to our allies so we can stop freaking spaming everything that we have at random hoping we hit someone who needs it.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

The whole point is to take something away to give you something new. If they allowed you to keep things then you would have even more power creep than usual.

Like, I don’t want to give up overloads on my Ele, but that’s the cookie.

Also, PoF is separate from HoT, so it can’t “depend” on anything from it, so although you will see individual Core, HoT, and PoF players, a single player cannot mix builds from these multiple game versions except for stats on items.

Do you regret pre-purchasing HoT?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I didn’t prepurchase, but I still regret buying it afterwards. It was no where worth the money that you’re paying, as the amount of content is pretty pathetic in comparison to the core game that you paid the same price for. The whole thing feels like they were just milking veterans for all their worth before they finally leave. I’m a big fan of GW2, and of ArenaNet, but I have to say this whole thing has felt underhanded and passive aggressive from a company that spent three years boasting to us about how they love to give us free content “unlike other MMOs”.

The game needed and expansion. That was plain and simple. Living story design was flawed from the beginning and if it had been made permanent content then the game was not going to need an expansion, but unfortunately ArenaNet lacked the foresight for that and by the time it was all done, it was too late. That is why the game ended up needing an expansion and they should not have ruined the game’s entire motto in order to develop it. The sheer amount of gating and degredation of the core game to promote buying the expansion was not in GW2’s spirit. It is the exact opposite of everything both the game and developers have stood for.

My regret stems not from the expansion, which is excelently done, but from the amount charged for it, and all of the actions and incentives to get people to buy it. Had these incentives been done properly in a way that was not insulting to players, it would not be a big deal, but many of us were driven to buy the expansion simply because we had become locked out of content that we had worked hard for, such as fully established guilds built by small groups of players that took years to finish off only for ANet to just say “oops, that’s it for you, enjoy”.

I want to buy an expo because its good, not because I’m forced to in order to keep playing. Players of this game can no longer support it because they love it, they have to support it because its the only MMO that fits their preferred gameplay and without the expo there will be nothing new (or old!) for them to do.

Can u please make Support a meaningful role?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

there are no trinity roles here. and game was advertised as such

and there is no reason to buff healing, as it would have negative effect on pvp and wvw

imo – in pve healing is just for learning purposes – learning not to get damaged

and don’t bother ‘saving’ someone, you are doing bad favor for them. if you constantly save them, they will never improve

P.S. and you should specify that you mean ‘healing support’, because support in general is awesome in this game – 25might stacks, fury, swiftness, vigor.. etc, and it makes huge difference

This isn’t Pokemon, the goal of the game isn’t to become the very best there ever was. Its to play together and have some fun while you are at it.

Defnitely do save people. Don’t let someone die just because you don’t think they are a good player or that they should improve via “tough love”. You don’t know what their playing conditions are or if they are even capable of it. Watching them become a corpse on the ground for such reasons is kind of sad.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Hannelore.8153

There’s acctualy alot to do, alot of content is stuffed into different achivements and Collections. There’s alot of fun i think

Its stretched content that consists mostly of grinding out the same goals over and over. Some of the map rewards for example require you to do the meta event several dozen times for a few items, and some of the more rediculous achievements even require doing things at least a couple hundred times in total.

Do you really consider that fun… ?

You must not’ve played very many other MMOs if you think rubberbanding content to make people feel rewarded for their money is a good thing. Playing psychological games with players helps the game in the short term, but damages its long term reputation and has lead to the demise of many popular games.

The expansion is good, I’ll give you that. But I’ll stand by my opinion that it took too much from the core game, and gave too little for the price.

Especially that awful, rushed and buggy story… :/

Observing players in the tower

in The Nightmare Within

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

The problem is the game doesn’t teach the players these things. Unless you go to PvP or WvW or (later on in your levels) do dungeons, there is absolutely NOTHING that shows you how to use the game mechanics or how to do anything in the game. The personal story doesn’t even tell you anything, and its the first “quests” players take.

The only way to learn in this game is through experience, and given that you have to be experienced to begin with in order to be accepted into the things that teach you experience (such as FotM and dungeons), it creates a negative feedback loop that results in the majority of the player population being kind of dumb.

Combine this with most of PvE being mind-numbingly easy due to the developers taking to many shortcuts to make mobs seem hard when they’re not.

Introduce a set of hands-on tutorials at the start of the game and as players reach higher levels and you would see things get alot better. The strange part is, almost every game has this except GW2, Anet just skipped it for some reason.

Its like blaming a kid that can’t write instead of his parents for not schooling him.

Stat Combos

Every possible combination of three stats.

And nerf all heals so that healing power is required to bunker. We shouldn’t have people running around in Zerk/PVT that heal themselves as effectively as Clerics. This leads to various balance issues with certain builds being too tanky even without any investment into any kind of related stats… just armor or damage.

In fact, right now, Toughness is the de facto self-healing stat due to the way it mitigates damage in relation to fixed-strength heal skills.

Me and my partner have had our own guild since the start of the game. We have only ever had a mximum of five people in it, and usually only we were online. So as just two people we worked very hard over the last 2 1/2 years to get all of the influence and guild merits needed to get all trees to level 6 and buy a decent amount of consumeables. Come the expansion, and now everything that we’ve done up until now, all of that hard work, is completely worthless just so Anet can make a buck.

This isn’t how you retain players. And I’m not really suprised- I’ve seen no hype about the expansion on social media, barely see any Revenants running around, etc. It feels like everyone has just stopped playing the game by now.

ArenaNet doesn’t care about what makes peoples’ hands or wrists hurt. I have RSI, and it is flared up daily by this game (especially loot bags and the horrible process of selling my collectibles on the TP at anything other than instant sell value).

They have done absolutely nothing to curve this, ever. Nor anything to help remedy any other health problem (poor UI organization, no high contrast, etc.).

I used to respect them alot but their continued ignorance of disabilities and just how stressful their game is on the hands has seriously irritated me for a long time now and made me stop buying gems about half a year ago. You’re all missing the point.

The problem is not the disconnect, the problem is that when you DC or crash you lose everything, your map, your rewards, your time, all for nothing.

This is actually ruining the game since the expansion content depends on people staying in the maps for large periods of time, often several hours. In such a system there must be a way to preserve progress because if something can go wrong, it will go wrong, that’s just the nature of life. Always better safe than sorry.

Maybe I have a slow computer?
Maybe I have a bad internet connection?
Maybe I crash from out of memory on the 32-bit client?
Maybe the game had a bug?
Maybe there’s a power or net outage?

Please stop assuming everything is okay for everyone and add mechanics to keep your map slot and participation for a short time. Its really neccessary.

Downlevelling should be more harsh

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Its very clear from recent updates that ANet is mostly interested in improving the game for newer players, which I am completely fine with, don’t get me wrong. Like any veteran I wish they would add more end-game content, but I still have friends who join this game and I like them getting a better experience.

The problem is I still cannot play with my friends because when I go to low level zones, even on the weakest of gear and builds, I completely destroy everything.

Now, one of the original promised goals of the game would be that all players would be able to play together regardless of their level; this is the whole point of the downlevelling system, but this system does not work. When you are downlevelled, it does not properly compensate for improved gear quality (e.g Exotics), and full traits, so you end up being just as overpowered as you do in any MMO.

Is there really a big difference if I can go to the starter zone and take on 20 mobs at one time instead of the 200 of other games? I don’t think so. Its still too much.

After the mobs were weakened in the trait update, this became even worse.

Please reconsider the downlevelling system design; I would love to be able to play with my friends and other low level players once again without just one-shotting everything that they attack before they can even target it. And world bosses in these zones should not be dying in a mere 30 seconds, either.

Interface is way too small

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Oh god.

The interface is already overly large on the “Largest” setting in 1080p, which is seen as one of the more extreme resolutions and only the average for gamers. The average for “normal” users who just browse the web (mostly on laptops) is still 1366×768.

ArenaNet never expected someone to play on such a resolution.

Even if they add a larger setting for the UI, all of the icons for skills and whatnot will still be blurry because upscaling is as bad as downscaling. So only your world view would become sharper compared to playing in a lower resolution.

How do you handle your desktop? Its not scalable… :P

Point to healing in public events?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

I have to say I am a little disheartened, I usually heal in all games I play and it does not seem to be viable in this one.

Is there somewhere where healing comes into play and has more of an effect?

First of all, don’t listen to anything in this thread. The people saying healing doesn’t exist are usually part of a small group of people who run all Berserker gear and dodge perfectly. And even alot of them aren’t as perfect as they think and just don’t pay any attention to their log to when some water blast saves them.

I have 3-4 characters set up entirely for DPS, and they benefit from support, no matter how much I train or how good I get a certain encounter, things happen.

Secondly, you should understand that there are no truly dedicated healers in this game. Even the person with the best healing class will still need to switch to damage and fight mobs most of the time because other players don’t need healing that often except in certain battles that overwhelm them. If you want a character who can switch to healing in an emergency and completely restore the health of all his party that is about to wipe, this game is for you. if you want to follow noobs around and heal them as they level, this game is not for you.

Healing is highly situational.

Finally, if you want to be a dedicated healer in this game, either play PvP/WvW, or play the newer PvE maps from Heart of Thorns using Celestial (not dedicated Healing Power or fully defensive) gear. For class you should use Engineer, Elementalist, Ranger or Revenant, and Elementalist is the best of these in non-expo GW2.

If you don’t have the expansion, and you want to play a healer, then buy it. Encounters in the expo encourage healing, CC, and other alternative means of gameplay and generally punish pure DPS users, stackers and overdodgers.

Now, as for how to play your Engineer effectively as a healer, you need a condition damage and condition duration build. You’ll probably want to use Nightmare runes from Twilight arbor, condition duration food (Super Veggie Pizza is good enough), Giver’s weapons, Sigil of Malice and possible swap in some parts from the newer expo stat combinations that include condition duration.

The reason for this is simple, Engineer is very complex to play for healing, although they are very good at it. They have to master many combos (mostly blast finishers). And except for a few select power builds, they are mostly a class that benefits from conditions unless you run the hammer in the expo on Scrapper subclass. Conditions have the benefit of allowing you to continue to do damage while also healing in which case you will not receive much, if any, flak from your party.

Zergs out of control?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

When I first started playing this game two years ago, the average number of players that you would expect to meet in a PvE map was maybe 10-15 at a world boss and if you went to WvW then you would see a zerg of maybe 50 players.

These numbers have slowly increased over the years. These days at a world boss it is not uncommon to see an entire map’s population there (something like several hundred players minimum) and WvW zergs tend to be of similar size on T1.

I know that zergs occur in all games, however it feels like Anet has done absolutely nothing to curb the tendancy to ball into huge zergs for all content. In fact, I would say that everything they have done since release , such as living world, megaserver, map event dailies and Silverwastes have just asked more and more people to all gather into a single location for a part of the game.

My issue with this is it seems to completely break the mechanics of the game. For those of us old enough to remember, the game was highly balanced at 5-10 players (25 max). But due to issues with downscaling, poor event scaling, etc. zergs have rendered all existing content completely trivial and less than 1% of a challenge.

There’s also the fact that this game engine is aging and yet Anet seems to ignore this, constantly pushing more intensive content that even larger zergs can participate in (rather than more solo or party content). I remember a time when world events demanded strategy discussion in local chat, and these days the only kind of discussion I ever see in local chat at world events is how low everyone’s FPS is, how much they are lagging and how they can barely move or use any skills.

I am really wondering where the game is headed and if HoT will be even worse…

Will the New Expansion Bring a Decent UI?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

To be fair the UI is pretty bad:

1) You can’t move most things around, or can only move them to one other spot.

2) There is usually too much going on for the right side of the screen, there is too much text and often it is cut off, overlapping, or individual UI elements over there such as the heart or event progress panes will collapse themselves.

3) Everything is overly large, even on “small” size – the game barely fits in a 1366×768 resolution which is used by many laptops even in 2017, and at this resolution it isn’t really that playable compared to higher resolutions.

4) Some of the feedback mechanics are considerably bad- for example the buff bar both in party and near your skills does not wrap, so if you have a few dozen buffs (boosters, banners, etc.) it just goes off the screen and you can’t see it, or in party it overlaps the combat for your allies making it hard for them to play.

5) Many important functionalities, like lock skillbar, are missing, making it easy to change these things by accident outside of combat, and there is no permanently visible combat log which makes reacting to combat more difficult than it has to be.

Some generic improvements that could be made:

- Detach the minimap, quest pane, etc. away from the fullscreen UI and allow us to move them around as windows, making the border disppear when we stop moving them (fusing with the screen) and locking in place.

- Try to scale some of the window borders and other large components down, they should not be excessively larger than the text they contain.

- Improve the feedback panel, in particular make it so that buffs from sources such as food and banners are on a separate row from combat buffs and those should also be on a separate row from conditions to easier manage cleanses.

- Split the chat panel into two panes top and bottom, with the top pane able to either be another chat pane or a permanently visible combat log. Make it so that you can drag a bar to hide the top pane if you don’t want it.

- Add a lock checkbox next to the skillbar which prevents all changes.

I am a UI designer…

Wings look so ridiculous

They look okay, its just that some of them are comically large. Wings like spinal blades and dwayna are fine, but feathered or golden wings are gigantic.

There seems to be only two sizes to wings: “Normal” and “I can’t see anything.”

DPS meter really?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Hannelore.8153

I’m okay with DPS meters.

I’m also okay with watching the DPS or your allies as well.

I’m okay if you want to run a group that blocks other people due to DPS. Its your guild or your party or your squad or whatever, so that’s fine.

I can just go play in some other group.

But if you think its okay to invade people’s privacy, look at their gear, intensely question them on their gear and build, or anything like that, you need to just stop playing. its a game, and these are people, not your playthings.

If you don’t want to carry people through a video game, then don’t act like a child and make other people carry you through life.

Condi Damage vs. Power Damage [merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Many of these opinions are completely biased and are not coming from players who use characters with condition builds. I want to make a few points:

1) Condition builds are hard. Yes, the gear is simpler, but the builds are not, they require many traits, runes, sigils, and food to work in unison with each other. This means that when specced into conditions, you cannot change your build. This is in contrast to Berserker and similar sets where you can run a full support build and still output heavy damage due to your gear (especially after the update).

2) Condition builds are useless against people who condition cleanse alot. For example, warriors who are traited for it can cleanse about once every few seconds, thanks to Cleansing Ire, the endurance signet, Mending, etc. Not to mention that many classes such as thief and warrior have heavy resistance to movement-impeding conditions, limiting your options to mostly just killing them outright as you have a very hard time slowing them down or stopping them at all.

3) Condition damage is a ramp up, while power damage is instant. This has an important meaning to classes such as theives which rely on coming out of stealth with everything they have, immediately. Sure, condition thieves work very well too, but they aren’t going to have the initial advantage in comparison. Using a condition build means giving up your intiial advantage to gain a long term advantage.

4) Condition damage is not a single stat. Stop saying that. Yes, some classes can stack bleeds heavily enough that they can get by without condition duration, but the large majority do not. Some classes such as necro even require full condition duration (reduced to 85% now even with Giver’s weps and Nightmare runes) to bleed out their opponents in any meaningful amount of time. This is even worse in WvW than in PvP due to the use of Melandru runes and lemongrass foods. If you do not believe me on this point, then please check the price of condition duration sigils on the market.

5) Condition damage requires Precision for maximum damage output. When running Dire, you are effectivley running the equivalent of Soldiers’. A simple example is that on warrior, you lose two potential bleed stacks per hit without Precision, greatly lowering the potential DPS that you can do against your enemy.

6) In some battles, conditions can become very dangerous if your enemy starts to convert them into boons, especially for an entire team. Through using conditions, you can actually get your entire team wiped due to overbuffing your enemies.

-
I recommend not developing opinions on something unless you’re thoroughly educated about the subject through knowledge and experience.

Only PvP and WvW?

World completion, farming (of various kinds), dungeons, fractals, ascended gear, legendaries, minis, wardrobe, living story. And when you’re done with all of that, start a guild, grind out all of the influence and help others do these things to.

And don’t forget to talk to people. Find somewhere, sit down, and talk.

It sounds to me like you want open-world PvP, this is never going to happen. However I agree that duelling in PvE would be nice to have.

You have to be kidding. Plenty of things in this game don’t scale down enough and while the game is mostly for soloers most of the solo content is utterly boring compared to the content that is available for parties and groups (dungeons, FotM, the harder world bosses, etc.). This is partly why smaller servers are suffering.

We do not need more party content. We do not need more soloable content. We need all content to scale depending on the number of players involved, a feature that GW2 was heavily advertised for but only partially implements. For example, some living story instances were single player (e.g Dragon Bash), while some living world events were dungeons that required parties (Aetherblades Retreat), and its examples like this of the lack of scaling that is irritating to people who want to play their own way. Especially since not all classes are created equal and each one solos or parties better than others.

This living world event was actually finally a step in the right direction. The instances support multiple people (scaling up to dungeon-sized parties), but it can all also be soloed if you have the time and are willing to make the effort.

DPS meter really?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Yes, people are using DPS meters now.. no ArenaNet has not done anything about it. I’ve also heard there are ways to see other peoples gear and builds, presumably by examining the game’s memory—this is illegal, but such programs are difficult for ArenaNet to detect without something like Blizzard’s Warden.

Unfortunately, the only reason this is possible is because they offload so much to the client in order to reduce the load on the servers, but this always comes at as security risk- almost every MMO ends up doing it due to the high server load that comes with this type of game and its always the same result.

There’s also some DPS meters that monitor the screen and thus are completely legal, and ANet wouldn’t do anything about those anyway.

Temporary LS content is not cutting it

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Everyone in the industry knows that games are valued based upon replayability. A game that does not have replayability (you exhaust the content once, and then move on) is not a success while games like FPS & RTS are huge success because even though their single player story may suck they have infinite replayability in multiplayer.

There are exceptions, but this is the general rule. Games with a high degree of replayability can last a decade after they are first created.

Guild Wars 2 partially solves the problem by making its Personal Story have a degree of replayability by requiring different alts, etc, to experience all the paths. It also partially solves the problem by having PvP and WvW.

But PvE wise, the Living Story falls short of replayability by a mile. There is nothing in the Living Story that is replayable save for a few changes to some maps and some new dungeon paths added (mostly to Fractals of the Mists).

I loved the LS, but its over, I will never see it again. I will never be able to enjoy the intricate details of it instead of all of the stress that I received from rushed schedules, zerg mechanics and lots and lots of bugs and balance issues.

The game is headed no where good at this rate, if this just continues.

Keep bringing us the Living Story, don’t abandon your model. But please, for the love of the six gods, add it to the game in some permanent format.

What happened to party play?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Here’s the problem,

All the speed runners, min/maxers, and zerker heavy onlys have chased the casual player base away from the dungeons.

ANet looks at their metrics and sees no one in the dungeons. They see that the TA:Aetherblade update was unsuccessful. Most players like myself did it once and will never do it again or simply passed on it. Meanwhile they look at Lion’s Arch and there’s 10k people doing it. You have an update that interests 10000 people at any given moment or one that interests maybe 50 people in total a day. Its not a very hard decision as to what’s better for business.

Not pointing the finger at you or anyone in particular but its the price that gets paid for being an kitten. Hardcore WvW guilds push players away, ANet stops doing WvW updates. sPvP players rip on people that play ele in tournies and rage quit on skyham, ANet stops doing PvP updates. In this case, the same is true for dungeons.

If I could vote this up ten times i would. People didn’t want casuals playing this game, and have gone out of their way to ensure it, then wonder why they only get updates to the parts of the game that causals still play.

Here’s a hint – 99% of players are casuals, and Anet is a game company that needs money. Unfortunately they can’t make that money off of a minority.

I actually saw a topic in general discussion asking for gear check functionality on LFG.

And what I see here is someone defending the changes, raining on the “parade” of all those who got completely screwed with the new system.

Its not fun to lose absolutely everything you had for no reason, and if you aren’t someone who lost all of your hard work over the last few years from HoT, then you really should not be here and should not be discussing the subject. "Downed State" frightening for new players?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Because players are not able to familiarize themselves with the downed state until they are in an emergency situation that can quickly lead to death.

This is not the time to be learning something…

It would be completely different if they could review the skills beforehand, and maybe get a tutorial on the downed state or something. I have played the game for 1 1/2 years and the only reason I know exactly what all of my downed skills do on every class is because I read about them on the wiki. There just isn’t any time to familiarize yourself with them when you’re dying to another player, mob or boss.

In fact, in dungeons, fractals, WvW and PvP, you can even become a liability for your team if you are not able to return from a downed state effectively.

throwing mobs from cliffs

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Because the game has a bad AI that cannot compensate for it. That’s why all the other mob hacks such as Unshakeable, leash regen, etc. exist as well.

Leash regen is in place so people can’t glitch/exploit the mobs for free kills. Lots of games have leashing and regen typically follows with it.

I’ve never heard anyone refer to them as ‘mob hacks’, though. Underlying hatred for the mechanics, I detect.

They couldn’t be exploited if they had a proper AI. Almost all games that implement these preventions have a bad AI that is very similar to the one in GW2.

For example, if you cannot reach a mob, but can atttack it (e.g up a cliff), then the proper solution is to have the mob use a ranged attack, not be invulnerable, unless the invulnerability also came with some kind of visual status (i.e a shield).

This way of doing things only removes viable tactics from the players, and on top of that also makes the mobs appear dumb and unimaginative.

Then people wonder why all you can do is press 1111 half the time…

Its the simple truth that in the current implementation, mobs are hackers. Just because they are game objects and not people does not change that. They resist CC without the use of any skills, become invulnerable, port around, leash and reset, are immune to being knocked off of cliffs (a particular hazard to players), etc.

Its just a horrible departure from immersion when the player character exists in a world of what are obviously scripted objects and not “real” creatures or people. How are you supposed to take it all seriously when the same mechanics don’t even apply, and when the same tactics that are viable against sentient beings behind player characters are not viable against what are supposed to be sentient beings (in lore) behind NPCs?

And how many things in the game have been dumbed down to the point of appearing almost broken just to keep a small minority from exploting it?

There is always a better way to do something.

One shots in this game...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Dodging isn’t always possible. Many people play on 200+ms ping, actually I would say it is pretty average if you are a non-US player playing on the NA servers. It still gives a lower overall ping to some countries like Australia than the EU servers, but if you have anything beyond about 100-150ms (which are considered quite low by today’s standards) dodging at the right time becomes alot harder.

There are many other things that factor into this, like reflexes which can be harmed by conditions like RSI that are common amoung gamers, even progamers. Its not the best idea to just tell people that if they can’t dodge they should just get out, although that attitude is way too common in-game, especially for dungeons… there’s not alot of games like GW2 and there is far more to this game than just that one little action-based mechanic that , to be honest, is poorly implemented, being little more than an invulnerability button that you can press at the right time.

It doesn’t take skill to do it, and its not very L2P compared to other action games that implement dodging in a meaningful manner that you have to think about. But because the developers have taken to balancing the entire combat metagame around their poorly implemented dodge mechanic, players are forced to live with it. So you’re going to be seeing one-hit KOs forever, and probably more of them.

How can I show casuals the importance of TS?

in WvW

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

Sure is arrogance in here, then you guys wonder why people won’t get on your TS. While I have seen some really good replies here, I’ve also seen some really bad ones, from people who clearly do not understand how other people work.

Rule #1 to beat your opponent: Remember that not everyone is YOU. This is a good thing, not a bad thing, because if everyone was the same, and always playing the same metagame, and always following the leader nicely, etc. It would also make your side extremely easy to counter, because it will only be a limited amount of time before the enemy learns from everything that you do and starts anticipating it. Having casuals, roamers, havoc groups, etc. is very important to keep your enemy guessing. Variation is a heathly thing and it should be encouraged, not stamped out. The last thing you ever want to do as a commander is put all your eggs in one basket.

As a commander, I don’t run TS, intentionally, because my real life usually demands that I pay attention to other things, and I often playing the early morning hours with the SEA folks while everyone else in this place is asleep. Even if i could get them on TS, they wouldn’t understand me and vice versa. Its pointless. Instead, awareness is the big goal. I recommend playing some somewhat difficult PvE events like Tequatl with people who you cannot understand at all, and look at how they react to what you do. You will learn alot of things about how people respond by initiative alone.

It is possible to follow without TS, and be effective. But more importantly, it is possible to lead without TS , and still be effective. Who you are – the decisions that you make – how you treat people especially, are all more important than when you time your water fields or all of those technical details. Because one slur, one put-down, all of it undoes any amount of hard work that you do otherwise. And to make it worse, TS is often full of things (like music) that distract people more than making them pay attention. People have a limited attention span, and if you use up too much of that attention span on a bunch of dudes and bros yammering away, it gets much harder to focus on the real battle or what the commander is actuallly saying, to the point where you will perform worse than if you weren’t in TS.

The secret to being a good commander is to remember that it is a game, winning isn’t everything, and that there are no casuals; everyone is equal, some are more hardcore players than others, but they are still all players under your wing at the end of the day. You are responsible for what they do. If they fail, it may be because of real life limitations, but more often it is because you screwed up by chosing a battle that is too complex for people to win without extreme coordination.

Anyone experienced with sports or e-sports (professional gaming) will understand the importance of what I am saying. If you tried to lead a football team with these kinds of mentalities, you would most likely be fired for causing stress.

Harry Potter and the NPE

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

This is a really bad analogy. Because Harry Potter is divided into books and those books all have different plots.

The first ten levels of your story are initiated by a single question in character generation. To all intents and purposes, nothing that happens in those chapters gets brought up in the chapter 11 plus story, because it’s done. That’s it. It’s finished. It’s final.

Those characters are done and you’re onto something new. The 11-20 story which is something that pertains to a different question in character generation. It’s a completely story arc done. It doesn’t affect anything that you’re doing in the 21-30 story at all.

So you can’t compare this to a set of books that builds on itself, and it’s not fair too.

It’s more like a serial than a novel, and if you’re going to compare it to anything, that would be the thing to compare it to.

I’ve always felt the greatest flaw in the story of this game was the ten level requirement that pretty much had to shoehorn the story into the pattern. That meant writers had massive constraints they wouldn’t have had if they could just “write a story”.

He’s actually talking about the story being horribly out of order now.

PoF - Purchase Clarification

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Hannelore.8153

Hannelore.8153

They never said that non-upgraded accounts would get previous expansions for free.

HoT released as $50. If you buy PoV with HoT it too will be $50. So for the same price as the first expansion you can get the both. Also if you already have HoT it’s cheaper. Everyone wins.

There’s just one problem with this model:

Good luck ever seeing another player on the HoT maps once the new expo drops. There will be no reason for anyone to play them, except maybe for legendaries and a bit of gliding masteries. All new players will just read about how bad the story was and jump straight into PoF, rendering the maps dead.

This will, by extension, negatively effect the LS3 maps too, since they depend on people owning both HoT and LS3 to enter them.

We’re quickly heading towards a future where when you ask someone to port to you, they say “I don’t have HoT”, “I don’t have LS3”, “I don’t have PoF”, and this will only continue to build stacks with each new LS and expo.

On topic:
I am looking forward to the reduced cost for people who already own the game.
