I think they are indeed powerful and most of all are cut out for the new content, so they end up being the go to specs for that.
On the other hand it doesn’t make “vanilla” specs unviable. It’s mostly the min-maxing meta attitude that has been a problem for much longer. Most of the time your core spec builds will be perfectly viable, maybe it’ll take you a bit longer to complete content, but not to the point where it becomes a major problem, I think.

Ishmael, what do you mean? just killing mobs? but what is the difference between near hearts or far from them? If no one attacking the mobs I ’m killing, so why its less XP?

Thing is, if killing the mobs is part of a heart or event, they don’t last as long, that’s what I meant with killstreak booster the bonus XP can be many times the base XP you’d get from the mob.

- Being a Mage/Magic damage dealer.
- Being a Fighter/Tank Class
- Being a Ranged Class
- Being Supportive
- Being able to play WvW/PvP/PvE

Looks like you want to play an engineer:

You can deal lots of different kinds of damage: Conditions with grenades or pistols or you pick up your Flamethrower and do some close to medium range direct damage. Engineer can also go toe to toe with your enemies and whack ’em with crowbars and hammers. Support comes from using Elixirs and your healing turrets.
Give it a try, it is a very versatile class.

Keep in mind that mobs are worth more bonus XP the longer they have not been killed by someone, so if you are not afraid of some grinding, a good way to get XP is strutting down areas that are away from any hearts or events and killing everything while having a killstreak XP booster.

Personally I found that especially swamps with lots of yellow fireflies are a good spot to grind XP

Are the humans too weak ?

in Human

Posted by: Ishmael.6740

Ishmael.6740

First of all, humanity obviously roughly equals the charr in military strength, since there would otherwise be no reason for them to enter a treaty. there may be individuals on both sides who boast about how they beat the respective other into submission, but let’s face it – There has been a state of war for two and a half centuries without any side getting the advantage since the searing.

Second, Asura strike me more as “more inquisitive” than “more intellligent”, their culture builds around scientific progress, yes, but that’s a set of mind, not actual evolutionary advantage I think

Norn are isolated hunters, who might outmatch humans in a 1-1 comparison based on raw strength. Lorewise they can’t compete with humans in anything else: Magic, warfare, engineering…

Silvari are not any more magical than humans, from what I’ve seen. To be sure, we don’t know much about them, but looking at the events, there’s nothing to suggest that they outpace humans in the use of magic and humanity is famed for it’s expertise in the use of magic, especially mesmer magic.

So, no, I think humans are not “too weak”, they and the charr are the major forces in tyria at the moment and I think they equal one another. Maybe you mix up gameplay and lore, since Asura, Norn and Sylvari are actual “minorities” in tyria atm I’d think.

Zhaitan and Abaddon

in Lore

Posted by: Ishmael.6740

Ishmael.6740

It’s shown throughout the game and books that Zhaitan almost always kills first and corrupts second.

The exception to this are Kellach and Necromancer Rissa, potentially those who wore the amulets created by Rissa.

You are correct in saying that risen are not traditional undead, but the reason why “undead” and “risen” are interchangeably used by Tyrians is because Risen are created 99.99 with a lot of 9s% from dead bodies. Just like how those two terms and “Orrian” are used interchangeably because the source of risen is Orr.

We see that he can corrupt living beings – but he doesn’t seem to “prefer” it. Kellach only became corrupted via an artifact. Possibly Rissa as well (via the Dragon Crystal). In all other cases beyond those two, those who become corrupted are killed first.

I have never seen it said anywhere that Zhaitan would corrupt living beings directly. In fact, everything I’ve seen points to the opposite: that Zhaitan’s corruption only spreads to living beings through indirect means (be they plants or wildlife). The most common cases being when wildlife devour risen corpses, and they become toxic and spread diseases to the other plants and animals nearby (there’s a heart detailing all of this, but we see these effects throughout Bloodtide Coast and Sparkfly Fen).

Ah, yes, I misunderstood that and thought, the corruption would “kill” the victim to make it risen. Thanks for clarification.

Ishmael.6740

Where did you even get that it would need dead bodies?

As far as I understood Zhaitans corruption, it would turn living things into “Risen”, not classical undead, but living things corrupted by the Dragon of Undeaths power.

Zhaitan could have awoken, say, right next to Lions Arch and would have turned it’s people into Risen, they didn’t need to be dead for that. In this it works as Kralkatorriks Corruption.

Or am I mistaken? I forgot who said that, but I’m pretty sure it’s stated ingame.

Yes, it’s our istory anad we have to live with it anyways, speculation doesn’t befit a charr either. But we’ve grown. Of course you needed your titan gods after you effectively cut charr fighting strength in half by chaining us women to hearthfires.

A mistake, as you learned in time, getting your misogynistic behinds handed to you.

Our technological advance, made possible by the renouncement of gods and shamans, combined with our ferocity and prowess is enough to secure our position. A new age, where charr and human fight together to secure Tyria from the threat of the elder dragons has come – and there is no place in it for traditionalist knuckleheads who pick at old wounds.

“No. I would not fight one of our most powerful allies in our struggle against the elder dragons over thoughts of petty revenge. I was born and raised in Kryta, not in Ascalon and for Kryta I will fight – Against the one threat looming over us all: elder Dragons.

I joined the vigil to achieve this and I fought side by side with charr who I deem more valorous than many humans I’ve met. Charr who are willing to give their lives for Tyrias peoples, be it charr, human or asura.
I’ve been to Ebonhawke, to the fields of ruin. I witnessed our efforts to establish a treaty and the attempts of nationalist forces, human and charr alike, to sabotage these efforts. Our goal is to unite Tyria and fight the dragons and I will kill anyone, be it charr or human, who works against us.

What would we do anyway with that barren land? It’s charr homeland now, as Kryta is our homeland, together we stand the slightest chance of overcoming the dragons, divided we will be devoured, one after another.

And I don’t plan to let that happen."

If he was running a GS/Staff combination, it could have been a shatter spec 4-4-0-0-6 for the damage you mentioned. If thats the case, then the only way he could of stunned you would have been with Signet of Domination.

Signet of Domination is a default 3 second stun with the Sigil Paralyzation that would bump it up to ~ 4 seconds (every 45 seconds). With 4 in domination, the vulnerability would have had to come from a combination of "Daze’s AND “Interrupts”.

So basically, this guy would have had to do some work to get all those vulnerability stacks and then time his SignetOfDom/Mirror Blade/Mind Spike/Mind Wrack to do this “oneshot” every 45 seconds.

So yes its possible a Mesmer could do this…

Finaly someone here could actualy theorise something for this. All i know was that i indeed got hit with a VERY long stun duration and took about the full power of a 20k damage in the face along with a hit from mantra of distraction. So yea that the guy was running that signet do is possible. +1 slim

In wich case that would explain both the ridiculus stun duration and his ability to pop tons of clone. Well i guess the other guy that did NOT get stunned by the signet was just utherly bad because he could have moved out of the aoe with ease, i just figured he got just as controled as i was. Regardless thanks for actualy finding the issue now i know all i need to do to break that ’’bleep’’ build is to stun break that one signet and dodge out.

Sure, the other guy was bad and so he got oneshotted, but since you also died there must be some shenanigans going on with the game mechanics. Doesn’t sound improbable at all ^^

Yo were the tools, not your “gods”, charr ferocity allowed for the conquering of Ascalon and in time we would’ve done it without destroying our ancient homeland with giant crytals. You did not destroy the mursaat, neither did you sink Orr, both was humanitys doing. Also, we all need this treaty, there are elder dragons lurking about in case you forgot.

We don’t brag, we take action. We developed culture and civilization on the burnt ground you flame mongrels left behind. It’s not propaganda, it’s history.

My first character 2 years ago was a female charr ranger – i didn’t really play gw1, but i’ve always wanted to play a real, actual beast-race, and when i saw that female charr aren’t over-sexualized – no boobs, no revealing armor (though bcause of no boobs, i like armor on them that reveal their fur and pattern), they were very beastlike, fierce, yet at the same time very beautiful and captivating – just like a wild tiger.

This actually played a role for me as well, I son’t like the typical, sexist visualization of women in games and I love how the history of the charr race describes their overcoming of a patriarchal, religious society to one of the best depictions of eual rights I’ve seen in games so far – There is literally no difference based on gender in charr society, it just doesn’t play role in defining how far you can get.

If it’s a known race at all it’ll probably be Tengu, as some have pointed out ^^

Largos seem to always have their masks on, I don’t know if this wouldn’t have to much of an impact on gameplay for a race (who as of now only differ in style).

Where is dual wielding in this game?

in Warrior

Posted by: Ishmael.6740

Ishmael.6740

I think Axe/Mace out-DPS most other weapon sets – It sustains 4-8 Stacks of vulnerability easily and the third axe attack hits like a truck.

If you really wanted to you could stack 25 vuln on a mob on your own and eviscarate, just for the sake of seeing the big numbers ^^

I like it much more than the GS, 100b is nice for Adrenaline building and the rush is good mobility, but I on’t use the throw very often and I hate that whirl thingie.

So:

Off Hand Mace has a Vulnerability application and a line knock down.

Off-Hand sword I’ve seen described as “the better shield” because of riposte.

Off Hand Axe has a fury application and a whirl finisher (which I personally don’t like that much and is a bit redundant since I use Main Hand Axe which has a whirl as well)

I think all of them can go well together with the main hand weapon of your choice and dual wield two weapons is at least in PvE perfectly viable.

I agree on that, it seems to me that they now need to adjust the time when adrenaline depletion starts, so that you don’t loose adrenaline in infight situations where you tried to get to the next mob and run out of adrenaline before you even reach them.

It’s the problem with balancing: Making sure to find the right time to avoid people running from fight to fight with 100 % adrenaline up all the time and losing your adrenaline too fast when fighting groups and changing target.

Ishmael.6740

I started a warrior yesterday, since it seems like it’s not that popular anymore, and at least in PvE it seems that Adrenaline works just fine.

In smaller fights, well, they’re over before adrenaline is full, so that works very well.

when fighting veterans or champions i use some skills to apply vuln at first anyways and I find that I can every so often include an eviscerate in the “rotation”.

Even when fighting groups of trashmobs eviscerate can be used as gap closer. Works like a charm.

Just wanted to add, since someone compared Adrenaline to DS or Steal: It doesn’t work that way. DS is a defensive mechanic, one of the only ones a necro has access to, Necros without at least some LF are effectively entering combat without defensive mechanics.
Steal on the other hand I always saw more as an “opener” as opposed to adrenaline being more of a “finisher”, so it makes sense to build it up during combat and finish the opponent off with a well timed burst.

But, as always, I’m rather new to the game and haven’t done small scale PvP, maybe it’s more of an issue there.

What I don’t get is, when they chose to swap around the endgame missions, why would they not change dialogues etc. to match their changes?

This can not have been tested, or it has been tested by someone who didn’t care. There are major issues and inconsistencies in the story line now. Inconsistencies that jump right at you when you play from 60-80.

I guess the most obvious is the cleansing of orr mission, where you meet people you don’t know who talk about missions you supposedly went on with them, mentioning mouths and eyes you have no clue about. It’s a mess.

ANet screwed that one up, there is no way that this storyline was tested and approved by someone who had a clue what they were doing.

The Role Of Elder Dragons

in Lore

Posted by: Ishmael.6740

Ishmael.6740

I think our problem is our unclear definition of what “magic” is…

We have mentioned the elder dragons as things that seep out magic, awake when they’re “hungry”, consume all the magic and go to sleep to start leaking magic once again.

So, now, these elder dragons were awake the last time ten thousand years ago, fed, nearly wiped out the sentient races who lived in tyria at the time and went to sleep again.

So, the seers made a bloodstone to conatin magic, “the elder dragons did not corrupt”, late to be released by abaddon to bestow it on “all races” – Which, at that point, really just comes down to humanity, since the other races already had magic.

Our question seems to be: What is “uncorrupted magic” or how can we distiguish from “corrupted magic”?

Is magic corrupted forever if it has once been consumed by a dragon?
How does magic being consumed effect our spellcasters?
Also, what was the original purpose of the bloodstone, since, if I got that right, there are now 4 bloodstone shards out there, leaking magic, in addition to the elder dragons already leaking magic as well (Well, at least until they woke I’d say) – So, why would containing some magic make a difference in the given situation, when there are six primal beings leaking what I can only imagine as huge amounts of magic into the world?

Yes, I can see how mes GS5 could be a viable counter, but as someone else stated, there’s nothing forcing a thief to eat it — it can still be evaded while in the SR without losing the refuge.

I think (please bear in mind that I’m really unexperienced on practical GW2 PVP, just played a little GW1 PVP) the thief shouldn’t be forced to eat it – The key survivability mechanic being taken away shouldn’t be something that, at least, good players can’t avoid.
Which makes it more of a finetuning issue, balancing around existing methods of CC and the thiefs possibilities to avoid them…

Has anyone of you ever been to Divinitys Reach? I don’t know about you, but to me building that kind of city in practically no time (It was founded only ~100 years ago) seems pretty advanced in terms of technology – Also we see some of the watering technology in the human starting area which hints towards metalworkings that might well be on par with the charr (heh.)
Humans also are said to be the most powerful in terms of magic, perhaps only rivaled by the asura. Maybe they just rely more on that than, say, the charr, who had a cultural shift after which they mistrust gods and magic a bit I think.
The charr clearly have had a radical evolution in terms of technology which is clear because they shifted from a patriarchal, shamanistic society to an atheistic ideology that revolves mostly about doing stuff with their own hands – They’d rather evolve their machinery than rely on magic in cases where humans would just use magic, i guess.

Humanity also had to recover from the loss of their homeland and later the flooding of LA, I think they dealt darn well with that while still not getting to far behind other races in terms of civil technology.

I know this sounds odd, because we are all so used to hearing the complaint threads, that we start to believe the evil developers are clueless. The truth is they have access to a wealth of information we don’t have.

They can easily analyze the builds used in all the winning matches on a given night, week, or month as well as all the builds used in loosing matches. Based on the statistics, they will be able to identify anomalies, like 90% of the winning matches involved the use of turret exploding engineers and those players have consistently been winning matches against teams with more experience (higher ranked, etc).

I am sure they combine their findings based on information found in the community forums as well. The end result may appear odd to us at times, because we may not entirely understand what they have found and what they are trying to accomplish. To the OP’s original post, it is important for us to keep our pride in check and make thoughtful posts when we feel something is amiss, and not to jump to conclusions.

Have thought of the option that corruption just is a “permanent” thing?

I mean, if we’d kill Kralkatorrik, would the Brand and the Branded just vanish or die? Do they have some kind of “hivemind” that prevents them from doing anything if the boss dies?

Especially in the case of the risen I think they’d just go on to be mindless undead creatures – Champions already were largely autonomous I think, so the could just go on to command their armies of lesser corrupted.

And since EDs were descripbed as, I think, more like predatory animals than seintient beings, there wouldn’t be any reliance on a “guidance” from the ED, since it would not do much anyway…

This allows her to be much more open minded about humanity and the treaty, seeing that a well forged pact between Tyrias races will be their best weapon against another attempt of fundamentalistic Leadership for any of them.
She’d rather aid humanity in a struggle against, say, religious White Mantle Idiots, than try to subdue humans for another stupid Bunch of Gods.
Especially since she joined the Order of Whispers and worked with humans, learning that possibilities grow when racial boundaries are overcome.

I don’t recommend much vitality or toughness, mostly, because Thief playstyle revolves around not getting hit – This doesn’t mean you should not try it while you’re still leveling, if you want to, but I’d say going more on the offense while practising evades, dodges and blinds to mitigate damage will pay off more in the long run

To them, the flame legion “tircked” them into belief, and that belief turned out to be not even into real gods – Also, flame legion stripped all females of their status as soldiers after a planned rebellion by one female charr – That’s roughly half a nation they turned against themselves.

Help me to the lore of this game universe.

If I got that right, flame legion just harbored the most “shamans” who were the true power, because they “communicated” with the gods.

Also I think the titan magic just gave them the one edge, element of surprise, by tearing down the wall, the rest was more or less thanks to unprepared humanity.

their gods didn’t help them in Orr, nor in kryta, and were defeated by puny humans – the charr themselves were never defeated by humans since they reclaimed their homelands, I guess they just see themselves stronger now than their beaten gods.
