For PvE: Even after today’s buffs, necromancer still does 30 percent to 40 percent less DPS than other DPS classes (such as elementalist, thief, guardian, and engineer), based on golem and real-world testing, with no significant utility to make up for the gap. As a result, the class is almost never taken in high-end raid fights — with very rare exceptions for one or two fights where Plague Signet or Epidemic might be valuable, but even then other DPS are usually preferred for optimized groups. Are there future changes planned for necromancer, given this discrepancy?

How else are they going to determine whether or not it works if the literal only way they can check is on the live servers, since the problems can’t be reproduced on their internal testing servers/clients?

A public testing server. The disaster that has been this beta weekend is one of the many, many reasons this game needs one, just like every other major MMO uses one.

There aren’t any assurances, and I don’t think you (or anyone) is going to get them. It’s not reasonable to ask for assurances, because unsuspected things happen. All the time. Testing on a live server can bring problems that are completely new and couldn’t be predicted. Something that works fine first can suddenly break, etc etc. It’s a good thing that they are open in their communication. It’s clearly not that easy to fix, so that will take its time.

Right. But other MMOs don’t have these problems to the same extent because they have better internal testing coupled with public testing.

Since we’re not testing three of four zones in the expansion and 11 out of 12 raid bosses, I think it’s fair to ask if something is changing internally to make sure all of this content isn’t bugged in a way that makes it unplayable. This is all costing us $50, after all.

There are plenty of premade teams that will lose to a group of 5 skilled solo players. The problem is only with high-tier premades wiping the floor with solo Q players. But, in reality, they will wipe the floor with low-mid tier premades too.

This debate is over and done with. It has been for two years, which is why they added solo queue in the first place. Even the developers agree solo players should not fight five-man or even four-man teams.

This is just a failure of their algorithm. Plain and simple. They either need to fix it, which it seems they’re incapable of doing, or bring back solo queue, which nobody said should be removed in the first place.

I’m thinking the OP might be over-sensitive. Surely there are people in the game who do insult others, but they’re a very small minority.

You have to consider the perspective of LGBT people before labeling them as over-sensitive. They’re in a minority group that faces discrimination on a daily basis. That wears a person down — and seeing any of it in a game that’s supposed to be a tool for escape can just send someone over the edge.

Ok, guys. Some of you are unhappy about this change, I can see that. BUT… quite honestly, most of you are sort of (I hate to use the word) ranting (sorry!) instead of offering suggestions.

I assure you, the team leader told me not 15 minutes ago, they will listen to suggestions.

  • Does that mean you get everything you want? Probably not.
  • Does that mean you should suggest something? Yes, of course! Because they’re expecting player input.

So you want lower increments? Think it through and present a suggestion! You want XYZ in the interface? Post that idea. You would rather see something else? Post what you think about that other thing. Please don’t get into the whole “I’m going to kick the devs and their little dogs, too” because it’s not doing you or us any good at all.

I’m not here to apologize. I’m here to communicate and right now, the communication is coming in without a whole lot of substance. Over to you for suggestions and constructive input!

Put in an option to manually exchange gold for X amount of gems and vice versa

Done.

No more putting in X gold to get the amount of gems you want and so it won’t confuse players. I want to exchang my 100 gems for gold, fine, just type it in and when you wanna get gems for your gold, fine, just type in how much gems you want. Profit.

This makes sense.

Frankly, the way it worked before didn’t make much sense. Almost no one went into the gem store and said, “I’m going to spend 40 gold today.” They went to the gem store and said, “I want to buy 400 gems.” Then they would fiddle with the gold count until they got the right amount.

With that said, I prefer the old system to this one. Destroying all flexibility is completely uncalled for.

I really hope no one buys that this is just about simplification and making the interface intuitive. What a laughable claim.

I will never buy gem stores again, through gold or real money, until this is fixed. Such a blatant money grab.

I have never seen a company I once respected so much completely descend in every single way I can imagine. The only way my respect for ArenaNet could fall lower is if you somehow screwed up the combat and art — because those are literally the only things that keep me playing at this point.

I think a lot of people are in your position. I think if the game was actually competitive and had better leaderboards, a lot of the top players would be outclassed by people who don’t even do team queues. There are a couple classes that don’t even have one good player currently representing them in North American tournaments.

Fix Turret Engineers

in PvP

Posted by: Lopez.7369

Lopez.7369

If good players are already able to counter it rather easily, where is the issue? I could understand if such a build was effective in tourneys as well, but it is easily crushed at competitive levels.
Asking for the game to be balanced over the needs of low skill level players is rather nonsensical. You could ask for nerfs for everything by following that pretense.

It’s a joke that a turret engi can hold a point against multiple zerkers classes in uncoordinated games. I hate to break it to you, but in a large chunk of games you’ll have at least one team not on TS. It gets even worse when you get paired with randoms.

My issue with turret engis isn’t WHAT the do but HOW they do it. It is demoralizing watching a player sit there and auto attack, never dodge and often times win a fight where his turrets are setup or be a MAJOR factor in that fight. It’s bad for the playerbase because it’s like a virus. The bads that get rekt by turrets will switch to turrets and realize that it’s way too OP for how easy it is and keep playing it.

The issue is skill vs reward. AI has repeatedly proven itself to remove the required input on part of the user. There should be major sacrifices in efficacy when you choose something that is easy to play. If I’m forced to hit 4x as many buttons twice as fast to play a spec, why is a spec that hardly requires a pulse to play anywhere near effective as what turret engis are?

Exactly.

I honestly have no idea why they insist on keeping AI builds even semi-viable in PvP. They should be nerfed to uselessness.

Unfortunately, it seems like they’re moving in the exact opposite direction. See: buffs to turrets and spirit weapons tomorrow.

Sigh For those of you who need multiple explanations, here it goes again.

The issue with the turret build is that it is OP against PUG teams. A PUG team consists of ALL hot join, ALL solo queue, and at least 50% of team queue. It needs to be fixed.

I understand that a lot of engineers are worried that they will need to actually play going forward, but it is for the best. Really.

I knew what you meant. I think turrets are fine in those situations. I deal with them just fine on my necromancer in solo queue, even though I can’t come close to killing the turrets.

I think the bigger problem is too many people insist on fighting right on points regardless of the circumstances. People need to learn to position themselves better. Just because it’s conquest doesn’t mean you have to stand on the point at all times.

Fix Turret Engineers

in PvP

Posted by: Lopez.7369

Lopez.7369

No, they are not fine. A broken spec is still a broken spec. If it doesn’t impact top end play, then why should those players even care if it is nerfed? For everyone else, it is an OP spec that needs to be toned down.

The fact the build doesn’t work at high-level play means it’s not broken. The real problem is a lot of low-tier players, perhaps such as yourself, don’t know how to counter them.

I wouldn’t mind seeing AI builds entirely neutered in PvP just because they’re so cheesy, but there’s really no one but yourself to blame if you’re really struggling that much with any of the AI builds. None of them are viable in high-end play anymore.

it must be really frustrating for devs when they work for months on a project (like EotM) just to get the response from players that “it’s not WvW”. This is only an example, there are more. People state things like that about DryTop, sPvP maps,…

Because of this I understand why devs would hate to read forum posts (tons of non-constructive, non-respectful posts among the better ones).

Personally I love reading constructive posts on reddit. I downvote players who answer in non-respectful ways regularly. The reddit-tool remembers those downvotes and marks those players with red tags for me, so it’s really easy for me to skip their postings. This way reading through reddit threads without constantly getting the bad vibes is relatively easy for me.

This wouldn’t be a problem if they just took player feedback more seriously and earlier in the design stage.

Skyhammer, for instance, could be massively improved if they just removed the destructible panels and made the cannon possible to dodge. But instead of following that kind of advice that was made literally the day of the map’s launch, they arrogantly stick to their guns with almost every feature and piece of content.

Similar things can be said about Edge of the Mists. The map just needs more of an incentive to play, and some of the experiments in it need to be toned down, such as the cannons. But instead of making any changes whatsoever, they arrogantly stick to their original design.

One of their excuses for this is it’s apparently really difficult for them to deploy hotfixes and change tooltips. But I find that hard to believe. If it’s true, then they seriously screwed up the game’s back end because an extremely basic part of MMOs is doing quick hotfixes. Even notoriously slow developers like Blizzard deploy a huge amount of hotfixes, even some balance changes, after they release a patch.

I don’t do it, but I never fault anyone for just alt-tabbing or stepping away from the keyboard if Skyhammer pops. I actually recommend more people do it, since it could eventually get the developers’ attention.

Spirit Watch isn’t nearly as bad as everyone says it is, although the developers could take a significant step to balance the map if they just gave the orb its own abilities.

Lopez.7369

I think the good thing for ArenaNet is the game — and particularly the PvP community — is small enough that they can get away with it. If Blizzard tried to invite Swifty to an all-star WOW tournament, for instance, there would be a huge uproar. Here, it’s just like, whatever, the game isn’t that competitive anyway.

Grouch’s defense is really odd, though. Everyone knows that the vote is just going to be a popularity contest. So obviously the person with the most name recognition in the small, fractured PvP community will win — and that’s Blu, even though most people also know he’s not good at the game. So by nominating Blu, ArenaNet had to know he would win, or they’re just not privy to basics about popular votes.

Come to think of it, the idea of putting this to a popular vote negates any of its value. It’s just an expensive waste of time for ArenaNet. It won’t get that many viewers, because conquest just isn’t spectator-friendly, and it won’t even showcase the game at a high level of play.

Well, honestly every team with that mesmer build was in a disadvantage, I mean going shatterer with GS and Staff? Makes little sense to me although I don’t know the class well.

As for Warriors: the build almost every team used is horrible imo; HamBow+Soldier amulet+Runes of strenght for everybody? Really? There’s nothing better at the moment for warriors? You definitely could afford going with the berserk amulet if you use warr.

So far I’ve seen very little new builds and originality and it is at least disappointing. The only team that really put something “new” is, as it was predictable, Car Crash.

I was very surprised not to see any zerker/condi warrior or turret engi or phantasm/condi mesmer; every single class was in most of the cases the exact copy of one another. I almost had the feeling that someone just said to teams before the tourney started: “so here are the builds to use for the tourney, have fun and don’t try something new; bye”.

Anyway the tournament is thrilling and exciting, although Car Crash are still the best imo, both for originality and skills.

None of those things are surprising to any high-end player. The metagame that apparently exists at low-level play is completely wrong, because it’s built around very easy builds that only work against unknowledgeable players.

Polished Content?

Lopez.7369

I guess I have to agree this isn’t one of ANet’s most polished updates, but considering we’re already getting free new content and generally speedy bug fixes, and ANet’s been putting in a lot of effort for its player base, I thought there’d be less outrage and more understanding.

I think it’s problematic to view it as simply free content. A lot of people buy gem store items with the understanding that it supports the game and enables the content. A lot of people bought the box with the understanding that it would be a constantly updated MMO.

It’s also worth pointing out that it’s not “free” in the sense that it should allow ArenaNet to get away with leaving bugs in the game. It would be one thing if ArenaNet made all the living story content with a depleted revenue stream, but that’s not what’s happening. The gem store is supposed to — and does — make up for the absence of revenue that would come through a subscription fee. So ArenaNet is consistently failing to produce polished content despite getting AAA-level revenue.

There’s also the fact ArenaNet needs the game to remain populated to survive. No one would keep playing and pay for gem store items if Guild Wars 2 died. Under this understanding, players who stick around are to ArenaNet’s financial benefit.

But do you think the necessary playerbase is going to put up with consistently buggy content when so many options now exist in the MMORPG and gaming markets? Probably not. So if you truly care about Guild Wars 2, you probably shouldn’t tolerate these kind of bugs.

If I released anything close to this patch’s quality at my real job, I would be fired on the spot. My career would arguably be ruined, too, because I work in a very public atmosphere.

This isn’t a new problem with the game, either. Ever since launch, Guild Wars 2 has been plagued with bugs. Remember when the developers tried to do a live stream of the Orr temple events only to have three of them bug in a row? Remember at launch when literally every dynamic event in the world stalled in some servers? Remember all the class bugs some classes deal with to this day, some of them part of fundamental class mechanics?

But this patch, while wonderful in concept, is probably the buggiest, most dysfunctional content I have personally witnessed in any game. It’s definitely the buggiest content in any AAA game that comes to my mind.

I find the whole thing hilarious. The fact of the matter is phase 2 is total luck in the first place. I’m not convinced that it’s even mathematically possible to consistently kill the wurm without somehow exploiting him outside the event area or onto a wall. Phase 2 is a really stupid ending to an otherwise amazing event.

It’s 100 percent deserved, then, that the only way people actually beat the event is by accidentally “cheating.” I hope the developers take this as a lesson in designing stupidly random DPS checks.

With the fix to the initial invulnerability, it’s much more doable. But it’s still largely luck. The wurm just moves way too much.

And even though the wurm does seem to focus one person before it darts off, that’s still largely RNG because one PUG can randomly ruin the encounter for everyone.

It shouldn’t be luck, if you’re trying to melee it you’re probably doing it wrong. Use Range, you don’t have to wait for it to stop moving, because obviously that may never happen.

You cannot do enough DPS with only range to kill the wurm.

Besides, the wurm’s sporadic movement affects range as well because it moves further than 1200 range at times.

It shouldn’t be luck, but it is.
