Playable 8k resolution?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Agemnon.4608

I have a 4k monitor and like taking screenshots whenever I play. However, I still find a lot of zoom pixelated though they’re still good overall at 4k. I know graphic cards need to advance more for 8k to be playable but was wondering if the slideshow resolution is mostly a bandwidth or hardware issue. I get 20-40 fps at 4k but 1-6 at 8k.

Then I take the window of opportunity to get in my screenshots but then it buzzes and goes to the bluescreen with a video scheduler internal error :(

Pascal should still give the messages since I suspect it’s related to needing compatibility mode with Windows 10 as it isn’t natively compatible with DirectX 9.

Crafting legendary weapons difficulty?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

Truth be told, I had dismissed the idea of a legendary as a “not very important” goal.

Then, after guild missions a couple of months ago, I tossed some random yellows into the Mystic Toilet and was shocked to the core of my being when Zommoros rewarded me with Dusk.

Well, I took that as a sign from the RNG gods, so I went to work. My charrior was indignant when I took her Zoija’s Claymore away and gave it to the mesmer, but I handed her Dusk and told her if she worked very, very hard she could have one of the most awesome-looking weapons in the game. So she’s been doing map completion, PvP matches, crafting ingots until she’s cross-eyed, and getting help from my other characters (the mesmer’s been a regular in the Silverwastes, the thief has been making daily ori runs in Frostgorge and Cursed Shore, and the ele has been following the world boss train around). It’s a slow process if you don’t want to bankrupt yourself, but it’s doable.

The key, I’ve found, is patience.

If I got Dusk I don’t know if I’d keep in in case I feel like making it for my warrior and guardian or selling it for some sweet dye and ascended gear crafting gold.

That would be what we call a quality problem, or a “problem” that’s better to have than not like choosing which cute girl to be your girlfriend instead of no one being interested.

You qualify for a free Windows 10 upgrade. Windows 8 is the worst OS since Vista. With the exception of optimizations (DirectX 12 and H.265 readily come to mind) Windows 7 is far superior to 10 as far as ease of access and aesthetics go.

That right there is 10% a matter of opinion. I couldn’t stand 10 and ended up going back to 8.1. Of 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, 8 is still the best by a mile imo.

Eight had no start button while it introduced the lazily designed Metro interface. I should have gone for UI design. Had I known I could have a six figure income by basically doing nothing (Metro adds absolutely nothing and is a big step backward) but “designing” (that word has too much dignity to use seriously here) something with an overly flat and simplistic pre-alpha looking color scheme (no gradients or shadows, seriously?) I’d take it.

If a waiter or waitress were that lazy I’d complain to their manager. If a cook were that lazy with chicken they’d risk giving careless people salmonella.

Voice actors strike

I personally love my female sylvari engineer’s voice, so I hope it doesn’t hurt any future voice recordings.

You just have to compare American voice actors to Japanese voice actor to realise that many American voice actors are terrible!

I refuse to watch anime dubs, firstly due to the obvious americanisation of the original animes’ dialogue, and second american voice actors have no feeling, or emotion when they do their lines.
With Japanese voice actors, you can tell they are putting in the effort to make the character seem real. American voice actors are just drone people reading off a script. Just no love for the work they are doing.

Do forget a strike, they need a pay cut!

Just gonna leave that there for you.

GetOverIt.

The problem for me at least isn’t a simple translation but changing entire episodes, references, and even relationships (like the infamous Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune change.) In Japanese Dragon kitten there’s blood, alcohol, and other things that get edited out in the American version. I watched a Japanese version of Dragon kitten and felt so cheated by the (official) dubbers.

Fandubs are a different story usually. I don’t like official dubs for the same reason: so much gets edited out, even entire episodes or even seasons if they’re “irreconcilable” with middle class standards and tastes even though there are many Americans who don’t share those stuffy values.

I watch subtitled K-On! and it’s great. Even if without the subtitles the emotion and facial expressions make it entertaining enough. It’s an anime where they have their emotional ups and downs and isn’t just drama for its own sake like a lot of American shows that always seem to love beating the audience over the head with some agenda and insulting them.

The value of HoT isn’t just in specializations, or even in a new profession. Part of the value, for me anyway, is masteries, guild halls, gliding, and the continuation of the story. The story, from what little I played in the betas, is pretty good. I like the way it’s being handled. It feels darker than previous stories, which I like.

Basically it’s like saying I’m going to stop watching Lord of the Rings after the first movie. Well you can, but you won’t get the rest.

Masteries are the new form of progression, something I’ve been waiting for a long time. Want to instantly grab your loot instead of interacting with a key? Better level that pact commander mastery. Want to craft your own precursor for a legendary weapon…you need HoT. Want to glide over the jungle, use bouncing mushrooms, or talk to the hylek and learn their secrets…you need masteries.

The new specializations are cool and all, but I’m more interested in the new maps and new stories and I know a lot of people are more interested in raids.

And of course, the release cadence is going to increase afterwards, and you won’t be able to experience that new stuff without HoT.

Precursor crafting? The need for 250 bolts of Damask and spiritwood planks says hi! -_-

I’ve been playing GW2 for a year now, and it’s always run at a healthy frame rate of about 50 or more fps. Then in this past month, my fps dropped drastically to no more than 10 frames, sometimes even lower. My computer and graphics drivers are completely up to date, and changing the settings in game does nothing to fix the problem.

I have i7 running Windows 8.1, with a NVIDIA GEFORCE 840m, I should not be having these problems. None of my other games run this badly, just GW2.

What’s going on?

You qualify for a free Windows 10 upgrade. Windows 8 is the worst OS since Vista. With the exception of optimizations (DirectX 12 and H.265 readily come to mind) Windows 7 is far superior to 10 as far as ease of access and aesthetics go.

To answer your original question are you getting any updates? I can play Dark Souls at 8k resolution with playable framerates on singleplayer mode yet Guild Wars 2 is a slideshow so it might be on your ISP’s end or a bandwidth issue. If you’re limited to a certain data plan then that’ll limit you. I’d order at least a CAT 7 cable and with Pascal and Arctic Island cards being released in a few months you’ll trivially run things at 4k. Heck, I do so today even at Tequatl with most settings maxed except shadows and keep reflections off and use native sampling.

Patch Today: Key Farming Impacted

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Not being an exploit means that it is intended functionality. Saying that something is intended functionality is a form of endorsement.

I find the idea of key farming odd, and would have thought of it as a form of exploit myself, but Anet considered otherwise. Their call.

Between you and me I thought about keyfarming awhile back before it was widely advertised as a way of being clever but didn’t for a couple of reasons:

1. I was very focused on gathering mats, questing, dungeons, and crafting forge fodder for my legendary and figured it’d cut into that time.

2. Seemed like something I could be banned for, and since every step our character takes gives very exact data as to our coordinates evidence to punish such behavior would be trivial to gather (repeatedly made alts, their progress tracked, repeating the pattern, etc.) so the risk to reward ratio seemed terrible.

On a good note to people who keyfarm they could spend more time actually doing things in game like world bosses or WvW, and the entire idea behind fractals is obtaining upgrades that’ll give us an edge (or level the playing field) in WvW.

Ranger can be good but the thing is they’ll randomly do a knockback that takes away damage sync. The lightning, trickshot, or dancing dagger bounce are compromised while there’s one less enemy in the damage lava field or arrow barrage.

Necros are good but they have a very high skillcap so if you’re an average player they’re subpar but if you’re good they’re excellent.

I believe a big part of this conversation should be about magic find specifically and the rarity of loot it affects.
If all these blues and greens are to have any real meaning, it has to be in the valuable improvement of magic find.
Magic find simply needs to affect many more things. That seems inescapable.

I have 92% MF (112% counting the 20% MF upgrade in my triforge) So that’s 2.12x (or 1.92x when wearing the ruby orichalcum pendant) above baseline, yet most recent key was a week before the mordrem event. Got a total makeover kit too then gave myself a kewl green mohawk ^_^

Magic find does seem to need a buff though it’s hard noticing a difference.

I’m theorycrafting with soldier’s as a baseline and would prefer not to create two different armor sets. Since both elementalist and necro perform best with cele I don’t have to worry about it on that front.

However, I’m torn between berserker and zealot’s for non-soldier pieces (two or three?) Either way I’ll get extra damage from the precision but berskerker gives extra bonus damage through ferocity. Guardian seems like the best solo class due to shelter and stand your ground but I wanna make it group friendly. Then again if I need the healing power from zealot’s then it’s probably already an uphill battle.

Even I say no rangers or thieves but people tend to have many classes anyway so why not queue on a mesmer, guardian, elementalist, or warrior instead?

Crafting legendary weapons difficulty?

Been playing 6 months and currently working on my 3rd legendary. They are not that hard, you just have to find a way to work towards getting the materials that works for you. There is no escape from it being very costly, you will for instance have to buy the precursor off the TP unless you get crazy lucky. But don’t count on that. Just work toward crafting it at your own pace and eventually you will get there. Don’t give up & have fun.

Or persistent I wanted the Dreamer so I kept throwing rare shortbows I’d craft into the forge and eventually got one since I know if you do something infinitely until a certain thing happens it’ll eventually happen. For an experiment just keep shuffling cards and dealing as if you were playing poker. If your goal is to see if anyone got a royal flush then you will meet your goal provided you don’t give up.

This was long before Silverwaste gave decent ecto drops or even existed. Did it the old fashioned way in Orr when it was better.

I’d buff both Guardian and thieves’ HP. Paladins aren’t meant to be squishy, and thieves are kinda but not intended to be this much so.

I’d keep thief squishy but buff base HP and damage.

I’d fix acrobatics by returning it to its former glory.

I’d add an elite that grants stability and does % based damage.

Basilisk venom charge reduced, stun for 3 seconds (it is an elite skill after all some mob skills have way longer stuns than 1 second) and doesn’t make a sound or animation at the end.

Since reveal is coming I’d add a traitline in shadow arts that gives complete passive immunity to it, but to make it competitive with other GM traits will give 100% crit rate and a huge ferocity boost. I originally thought of some stacks of poison and burning, but the problem with that would be a scenario like this:

“Enemy team: Okay, they have a thief and that trickery GM trait that applies 10 stacks of poison and burn upon reveal is meta. So necromancer, it’s your job to transfer conditions after the revenant or whatever applies reveal.” This would in effect be using the thief’s GM trait against him, thus the change from conditions to guaranteed crit and big ferocity boost (don’t really know a balanced number for a gain to be honest, maybe +500 ferocity?) so it cant’ be used against him. The bonus would last as long as the revealed debuff.

That’s all I have for now.

I like this idea. +1 for you. At the very least make the % based damage an active skill that instantly processes that could be traited for stability (or whatever the CC immunity buff is called) because you know using the skill would be asking to be CCed so the stability seems needed. Might be strong enough to justify a long CD however. Racials can’t be used in PvP but in PvE it would even contend with Melandru and Grenth forms.

That’s quite a rabbit hole though. I strongly recommend some gems to gold especially for dyes but don’t rely on it too much and still do some actual farming. In other words mix it up. That way you can keep your gems for nice outfits while still crafting ascended in a reasonable time. With gems to gold however you still won’t be able to buy enough bolts of damask at least in the first session.

[Newb] 4 Clarifications about the Thief

in Thief

Posted by: Agemnon.4608

Agemnon.4608

“1) In PvE we’re taken mainly for skipping content Unintended behavior though if certain mobs didn’t turn friendly thus not dropping any loot or just loads of elites and veterans not giving anything useful compared to world trashmobs people wouldn’t feel an incentive to skip. We’re quite good at speeding up a dungeon run by granting the party the ability to bypass large chunks of content. We’re not the highest single target DPS Despite the very positional requirement for thief’s damage: up close attacking from behind whereas warrior can stand anywhere for great damage while ele has range on top of that but we’re probably in the top 3 Guardian, warrior, elementalist, mesmer, guardian, nope can’t say top 3 for PvE depending on comp. Dodge or die is pretty accurate.”

Pretty much an accurate observation but we’re not useless But why bring a thief when elementalist and others can be so much more useful? If you’re underpowered then you’re crippling your team. Quite often it’s more efficient for the thief to disengage even in team fights to go cap a point than it is for us to actually help in the fight. We’re easily one of the weaker 1v1 professions That should be looked into with our only real shining ability being that we can run away very well. Sadly this makes other professions more angry than if they’d lost to us and since the squeaky wheel gets all the grease, ANet has been consistently nerfing Thief way past competitive balance. We’re helpful in the sense that we’re mobile and much of the issues we have with 1v1s is more around OP builds of other professions than it just the Thief being too weak.

“Putting off new players to the profession is a good thing because we’re not lying. If a new player decides to play other professions they will have a better understanding of how great the game can be. We’re warning people of the actual reality of the current state of the profession.”

Yep, I even quit WoW back when MoP was announced because they broke rogues in half. At Blizzcon there was an awkward silence when the level 60 rogue traitline was announced. You could take shadowstep (should be baseline) or preparation whereas in Cata and before you could have both and it was balanced. Reckful even quit and not even he could make thief viable. If you played the world champion in chess and he started down a queen you’d beat him. Sometimes a class is simply objectively inferior to count as a real disadvantage. Sure a group of players are inferior to a dungeon boss, but the AI having certain holes or patterns is what makes it balanced. Other players obviously don’t have that so PvP and PvE should be held to different standards. PvP is much fairer for this reason, but to make it truly fair you need to roll an OP class and spec like everyone else.

Wings sound awesome in theory, heck I have some angel anime desktop backgrounds (squee ^_^ ) but in practice they…just don’t seem to look right. I mean if I had some authority I’d still put wings in the game but instead of as a backpiece skin I’d have them activate either with legendary weapons or elite skills (demon wings for necromancers, angel wings for guardians) but they’d be part of specific weapon or skill effects.

With that said I still think they should be sold since there’s a demand for them and the gate has already been opened.

Yet even more requests:

-Replacing black lion powder with T6 blue mat stacks.

-Plate armor outfits that are both pretty and practical (went over it in more detail earlier though doesn’t have to be that specifically)

-Stereotypical fantasy stuff like the previously mentioned astrologer outfits from FFXIV or Dark Souls II.

-More minis! Especially animals and not silly miniature versions of characters. One can never have too many cats or puppies^_^

-Dye kits that either have a chance at a legendary dye (either with special effects or two color patterns like checkered or weaving electro pink and yellow and would be called electro spring: effect or pattern name) or rare dye.

I don’t get why damage output is an issue anyways … reminds us again how bad our damage is compared to other classes? Oh right.

Guardians have (or at least should have) high defense and good healing so their damage for balancing purposes should be lower compared to other classes. If you ask yourself, “Can this viably 1v1 other classes?” not counting intended hardcounters and the answer is yes then it’s balanced. If you have low damage but good healing and defense to make up for it then you can use that. In WoW paladins can do stuff only paladins can do, and GW2 should be no different with guardians. Due to the lack of a trinity in this game however there are no set healer classes, though elementalist seems to really take the cake for the best healing class. Clothies (or at least should be) are squishy, so they should have the best healing. However, ele is broken in too many ways. If a team of 4 can viably win top level PvP then that’s an issue worth looking into. If it were four thieves or rangers Anet would nerf them that day.

People also say the name makes no sense but within context it actually does. Guardians are simply Guild Wars 2 versions of paladins, who are knights blessed with holy power. What are dragons typically an allegory in the west for? Paganism. Paganism isn’t a bad thing, only competing religious and philosophical systems to the Abrahamic traditions.

Now we’re getting somewhere. Since Dragons are opposed to the gods of Tyria and Guardians are holy warriors the title makes loads more sense.

While we’re on the topic we need some good dragons in the game to avoid unfortunate implications. Eastern portrayals of dragons tends to be superior, and in Breath of Fire games your character is a member of a dragon clan and can even shapeshift into them. Maybe something like that can be worked into Druid? If Druid gets owlbears/boomkins I’m making a hunter don’t care about it being underpowered I just won’t WvW or PvP on it.

Honestly…there’s not much left to “immerse” you in this game….how about the other way around.

What immerses you in GW2?

Playing solo, going offline mode and just exploring a fantastically created game-world……while avoiding hubs at all costs.

To be honest playing this game like an offline RPG works for me with a sprinkle of co-op when I run into random people. That’s the most fun I get now-a-days and it reminds me just how immersive this game can actually be if you avoid the rat-race and work-simulator aspects of this game…..at least until a zerg turns up.

That beats the whole purpose of an mmo…and means it’s either broken or has major problems immersing people into their world. What you said is not a big plus..it’s actually a very big minus honestly.

Besides by avoiding work and the rat race in the game you’re barred from all the best gear. Games are supposed to be games. At least we won’t have to craft forever. One of these days I’ll actually be able to sell my mats and save up some nice money for dyes and skins.

Worth the three minute cooldown vs. the entire minute for the overly long charge time and obnoxious noise and animation of BV (the noise on application needs to be deleted, charge time reduced, and ending animation eliminated problem with all of that is it communicates that you’ve applied it, giving other players information and could prepare a counter to it) just for a 1.5 second stun that might not even stun if someone has the sense to dodge the venom.

I actually don’t care about Thieves keeping stealth.

It’s those kitten ed Mesmers that I want to reveal. I hate Mesmers, they are the most annoying class to fight against in the game. The stealthing and teleportation they have just adds insult to injury.

Of course, why would you? Thief is so underpowered it’s better to save reveals for mesmers.

Yeah. In Wonderland Online for example you’d have an in-game provided bot to level you since it was so grindy. It was turn based and you could harvest and craft different things such as vehicles (required fuel, which could also be crafted) and even healing and MP replenish syrup. Sure the story made no sense, but it did have some amazing anime pictures for cutscenes that I liked.

However, the game was very pay to win and people even created multiple accounts, task switching between screens to party up with each other, then grind as a party to exploit a leveling bug known as “bursting”, which required item mall stuff so of course it didn’t get fixed. There was also lots of gambling and the game considering it looked like it belonged on SNES wound up being very expensive in the long run despite being “free” to play.

Change them to 90 % weapons when they drop.

The problem with that is weapons don’t salvage into silk and the metal and wood they do salvage to can be gathered on nodes.

Salvage, lots and lots of salvage.

This right here is the best solution and reason.

thanks for letting us know, didn’t even realize!

love your vids btw, really good elementalist right there!

I could beat the world champion in chess if he started without a queen, wouldn’t make me “good” just for having unfair advantages.

Add proper class balance and see if he can still pull all that off.

Yeah that’s rich, an ele calling for an already underpowered class to be nerfed. Mind doing a thief roaming and video and get back to us and see how well you did? Or hell, even a mid-tier class. I took out thieves and hunters on my ele roaming too.

Playing a video game for eight hours every day is pretty sad, but with that kind of time investment you really should buy the whole game as well as gems every so often since your free time is taken up by it. If we consider eight hours of sleep, eight for work (school for the children) and eight for leisure (commute times and meals don’t even count here let’s keep it simple) then that’s a limited time for playing.

Agreed that playing for free isn’t an entitlement. Stuff cost money, optional stuff too yet people still complain. Heck, you even had people complain that what they wanted wasn’t on sale! It’s like dude come on they don’t owe us a freaking sale!
